Where did you learn to draw like that? It's such a unique style!

I have a hard time placing what "my style" is, so I'm curious to hear what other people recognize in my art as distinctive.

Most of my practice probably comes from trying to imitate specific bits that I like from the art I consume, though I usually give up part of the way through on trying to guess what the artist was thinking about and just blend it with whatever shortcuts I've developed over the years. This often involves just whatever physical motions are most comfortable. My hands and wrists suck so I tend to give up on precision and cleanliness and lean into messier linework.

Some specific artists I pull from are Worthikids, Mason Lindroth, Jack Stauber, Paru Itagaki, Ryoko Kui, thecatamites, Rankin Bass, Vewn, Mike Mignola, qugre, Katsuya Terada, Dev Madan, Fumito Ueda, Yoji Shinkawa, and Mortis Ghost.

Anatomy is worth learning, but I think less about the details and more on the big picture rigid forms and the pulleys that squash and stretch to move limbs and fingers. Gesture drawing is probably the best way to get better at this (and I don't do enough of it lol oops).

I sort of think of characters like squishy puppets. I block in the joints in relation to the head/chest and try to imagine how the muscle/fat/clothes hang from their scaffolding.

I wish my art was composed of more bold forms and symbols, but elegantly simplifying complex forms is difficult and I have trouble imagining things in my head so I'll fall back on imitating realism as a crutch.

For palettes I usually lean towards complementary, triadic, and analogous hues and then mess around with the saturation and value until I like the resulting mood.

"And oh boy do we have a story for you today! Take it away, Earl!"

"...alright.

As of late, there have been brambles spiralling up and encasing parts of the Ramshackle dorm. The brambles themselves seem generally harmless, as do the roses that fall from them, but if you prick yourself on the thorns, it would be quite an unpleasant sensation, so I'd suggest exercising some extra caution when visiting for now."

"Yup, yup! If you've got a friend or two living in the dorm out there, go check on em and make sure they're doing okay!"

"I know I myself must check in on my dearest companions soon..."

"Well that's it for now! We've been your hosts, Chamomile-"

"And Earl Grey,"

"And this has been NRTea. Stay thirsty, dear listeners!"

The stream continues on for a bit before cutting off, though.

"Hey... James?"

"Yes?"

"Y'know how Yuna has been locking up lately and stuff? Says she's been super sick recently."

"Mhm... It's quite concerning, if I am being honest. I haven't seen her for a while..."

"...I wonder if Yuna is alright. I hope she doesn't get hurt with all those brambles."

"...Me too, Lewis. Me too."

Kiyuu stared down at her phone with a frown as the podcast ended. She didn't say anything, prompting Aros to speak up from behind her.

"...Lucky you haven't been over there for a while, isn't it?"

He spoke, giving Kiyuu a faint smile, leaning in just a little closer while dabbing a makeup brush into the eyeshadow pallette in his hand, before applying it, making slightly quicker movements than previously, already being able to tell what Kiyuu was thinking.

They both knew the signs by now from even just a glance. With the context the podcast had accidentlly given... Something bad was about to happen. That much they could tell.

His expression morphed back into a frown as he watched how Kiyuu's face seemed to go through a cycle of conflicting emotions, confirming what he'd thought.

"...Yuuto's close by, though. And he definitely won't hesitate to head straight for Ramshackle once he suspects something's happening..."

There was more silence, only disturbed by the quiet sounds of rummaging through makeup and supplies from Aros. They'd been in the middle of testing out some makeup samples Aros had been sent for a promotion when they'd decided to tune into NRTea's podcast in the background.

"...Would you like me to quickly finish applying your makeup before we go?"

Aros offered, picking up an eyelash curler, and tilting Kiyuu's head up gently with his pointer finger.

"But-"

"Ah- Let me finish now. If you're worried about time, I'll change up our plan, do something quick, yet effective, instead. Don't stress out more than you need to. It won't do you any good."

"Mmh... Okay then. I'd- really like that. Thank you..."

Kiyuu conceeded softly, a silent exchange of gratitude from Kiyuu between them, Aros nodding in response, expression neutral as he continued.

"...Heh. I bet he's real excited right now. I worry a lot for him when he does this sort of thing, y'know. Just doing whatever he wants with no consideration to anyone else's feelings..."

Kiyuu mumbled, an underlying bitterness that she never quite felt wholeheartedly in her voice.

"That's just how he is. The only thing for us to do now is help them both out, hm?"

"Ah- right..! Yuna, I heard their name was, I think... I hope they're alright..."

"As do I."

Aro's commented as he stood, reaching instinctively for his hand mirror, handing it to Kiyuu as he hastily, yet still neatly, tidied up his supplies.

"Satisfactory?"

He asked, turning his head around to gauge Kiyuu's opinion.

"Yeah! More than, for sure."

Kiyuu agreed, handing back the mirror. She felt a little better now, the familiar feeling of her makeup calming her nerves ever so slightly.

After a few short moments she stood, hastily reaching to fix up her hair into a more practical fashion.

"Okay! Okay. Let's go! We shouldn't waste anymore time."

She announced, projecting bounds more confidence than she actually felt.

"Yes, let's. Perhaps we'll even arrive before anything too disastrous occurs on either party's end..."

Aros responded. Though somehow, they both doubted that much of a miricle would happen for them today...

A Dog in the Cat House by SoloShikigami (General Audiences, Complete)

Nightmare has lived happily with his three cats, Dust, Killer, and Horror. But one day he comes across a poor dog in need of a home, and hey, he could always use a guard dog. But will his three cats get along with the newest member of the family?

A short but cute fic, I enjoy the concept behind it! It's a little unusual to find a fic where most of the characters are animals, but the author does a good job of writing the characters regardless!

Spoilers ahead!

I think it's a really cute fic with an interesting premise, having Cross as a dog in what was previously an all cat house.

The way the author writes the characters makes it known what they think & how they feel even without any dialogue spoken between them.

4. Does your character care about their reputation and/or how others perceive them?

yes! it matters a lot to them, perhaps to an unhealthy extent – they want to be liked, and will adjust their personality accordingly till they’ve become more settled with a person. there are very few people that iovitus feels they can really be their truest self around. they’ve become quite good at pretending to be someone they’re not

15. What habits does your character have?

iovitus has a lot of unconventional habits, and they especially come out when iovitus is nervous – which is often. most are subconscious, such as tugging at their ears, muttering/mumbling under their breath, and talking in their sleep. aside from that, iovitus is a bit of a nicotine (and zaza but we dont need to get into that) addict and smokes frequently, especially when they’re feeling down or need to soothe their nerves.

31. What genre of music does/would your character love?

they dont listen to a lot of music anymore, but when they do its a mixture of punk/nu-metal/heavy metal – it’s what they grew up with! they’re not particularly picky, however, and generally will listen to whatever is playing at the time. music is not something iovitus is all that connected to.

39. What does your character have yet to realize about themselves?

that they need to freakin GROW UP and move past their dead warband/girlfriend dude holy moly they guilt themselves so bad over it and suffer for no reason

46. Does your character specialize or have remarkable talent in anything? If so, what is it?

as a ranger, iovitus has a natural skill with animals of all types! this wasn’t something they discovered about themselves till after they’d left their legion life behind, as before the only animals they really were in contact with was the raptors/other mounts belonging to their bandmates. aside from that, iovitus is exceptionally skilled at weapon-based combat, though they don’t enjoy flaunting their skills unless working or absolutely necessary.

3. Is your character an optimist or pessimist? 

hhummmm. neither? she’s more of a realist, seeing things as they are and not allowing herself to feel strongly one way or the other about it. i suppose if i had to choose she’s more of a pessimist, but it’s not like ruckus actively seeks out the bad side of everything

10. If your character is an antagonist or something of the like, do they self-justify their actions? If so, how?

she doesn’t feel the need to justify anything for anyone. she’s lived a hard life filled with bloodshed and pain and whatever other horrible things legion life provides, and does things more for herself than anything else. ruckus generally doesn’t feel guilt for the things she’s done as both a legionnaire and a pirate, even if they're morally wrong or illegal. it’s her freakin’ life after all

13. Who is the closest person to your character?

27. How does your character view themselves? 

ruckus doesn’t think about herself very often, because it generally leads to her feeling sorry for herself and other emotions the legions taught her should be squandered. due to her rocky past romances and failure to properly connect with anyone on a meaningful level, ruckus thinks she isn’t really cut out for or deserving of any love that lasts. not that she’d let anyone know, though! she’s not a loser, she’s cool and awesome and feels nothing

32. How does your character view their past?

hmm. i think she holds a bit of pride in her past, seeing as she was once a well-respected legionnaire – nowadays, though, most of ruckus’ views on legion life as a whole are skewed. she only seems to recognize her failures as a leader and can’t come to accept the actual good she’s done, likely due to the fact that her current pirate lifestyle has gotten her into a bit of hot water with her centurion.

2. How does the public view them?

i don’t think the public has much of a view on nero. he’s just another soldier in a forgotten warband. it doesn’t help that he rarely, if ever, speaks to anyone outside of his warband – in fact, the only thing of note that he actively does is seek out his two cubs and participate in their life as much as he can. for the most part, though, nero is a faceless entity.

16. What is your character's relationship with their family?

good – or at least better than most other charr! though she doesn’t keep in contact with her parents/siblings, nero does spend a lot of time with her two twin cubs, patina and faust. their dam isn’t very interested in keeping in touch with them, but nero’s fine with that! she doesn’t get to do it very often, as her warband’s work keeps her occupied majority of the time or she’s too far away to travel to their fahrar. 

19. Summarize your character's goals in one sentence.

to earn a fat paycheck AMENNNN!!!! 

24. From childhood to their current age, how has your character changed?

as a cub, nero was still very reclusive and withdrawn from others, which is a trait of his that has carried into his adult life. he was maybe a little bit more talkative, but quickly learned that he generally was unwelcome in most conversations. after graduating from the fahrar and experiencing the wonderful things that war and elder dragons have to offer, nero developed a lot of anxiety and fearfulness – he keeps it hidden, however, as he was taught to do so growing up. it’s just how life is and it’s so normal to see death in everything isnt it 😊

34. What are three negative traits that your character has?

nero isn’t really a shy person, but he has very poor social skills and is selectively mute. he can communicate through sign language and a series of noises/body language only discernible to the members of his ‘band, but otherwise doesn’t talk to people he doesn’t know. he isn’t an airhead, but he also can get distracted relatively easily and may need a bit of assistance refocusing on the task at hand as well!

I know you possibly don't want this inbox right this second but I wanted to say that you should never apologize for trying to express your feelings, No matter how often or in what way you do it there's nothing wrong with that. This is YOUR BLOG and rightfully so wanting people to ask about you is normal it shouldn't be seen as some sort of crime to WANT ATTENTION especially because you put so much time / effort into everything you do. I know you're hurting right this second... I can't stop anything that you may do but I can at least tell you one last time that I will always try to support you to my compacity. I don't want you to feel as if you're standing alone in an empty room, I've been watching over you for even this short amount of time and you've made such an positive impact on me. i really do appreciate all the thingz you've said . but i really do need to stop talking about my issuez here and seek attention and support from a bunch of people on tumblr ; my purpoze here waz just to make art of my au and sometimez post fanfiction – i came onto thiz platform with the goal of escaping my problemz and being a pillar of support for otherz . to help them feel better in timez of need . and to inspire them with the thingz i make ; it just seemz that . over the past month or so . ive just been expozing the crackz in the foundation . and i've ended up the "high maintenance" person in everyonez livez . instead of helping maintain other people

looking back on it . itz foolish and unrealistic to think that would be the case – and look at me now . i've ended up spilling my gutz onto thiz website becauze i just desperately want people to look at me and care ; looking for pity in placez pity won't be found iz a waste of time and energy . and at thiz point i just want to go back to how it waz before thiz whole decline started . since i just posted art and thatz it – no opinionz . no mishapz about the day . no frustrationz . just entertainment for otherz
