Jayce is the in-universe equivalent to Latino. This is not a headcanon I'm Chris Lane himself.

Outside of their hex work, Viktor is quite fond of biology. He appreciates learning about evolution and how many different life forms deal with the same problems but face it in different ways. He is that one bug lover in every campus. Particularly fond of butterflies. He's got a few pinned down on his wall. Jayce finds it sort of creepy but keeps quiet.

Jayce is a geology nerd. He started getting into it while searching for a mineral that could resemble the first "stone" given to him by the mage when he was about 12. This was his very first theory: the arcane is actually stored in rocks and can be extracted like gold or such. It was clearly wrong but left him with a vast knowledge of just rocks. He has a million little chips around his bedroom. He fears the day he has to move because they're all heavy as fuck when combined.

Jayce is actually really athletic. But, like, for health benefits. He does appreciate his own body and WILL flex it if given the opportunity, but it's not the main reason why he exercises/works out (yes I know the forge bla bla I'm talking when he finally becomes a scientist guys). He wants to live a long life to take care of his mom, and knows that a good physique would make that easier.

Jayce ends up annoying Viktor into agreeing to do some low-impact stretches with him when they spend more than 24 hours just sitting around in the lab. And I'm talking VERY low impact. Wrist stretches, shoulder openers, some neck looseners. He's actually really patient and caring when they do this, and Viktor has definitely fallen a little bit more in love with each muscle movement.

Expanding on that: after 48 hours of work he Will Get The Zoomies. This ends up in Viktor, sitting peacefully, counting down the pushup reps Jayce is doing. He needs to get rid of all that energy and Viktor is more than happy to help. Especially when Jayce eventually starts taking out his shirt to do his little routines.

Jayce likes psychology and general health. He is really in tune with his own emotions in the show, okay? This man is reading self help books in his spare time. A lot of time the theory doesn't actually make it to his heart but at least he understands it. Viktor finds the chemistry side of psychology interesting, but is not that interested in the rest of it. Basically psychology vs psychiatrist ig.

They're both dinosaur nerds. Jayce is a big fan of their diets/possible mating rituals while Viktor is obsessed with fossils and evolution. Jayce likes flying specimens more, while Viktor is partial to the marine ones.

Viktor's one and only loved physical activity is swimming. Takes the weight off his leg and spine for a second. One of the few "luxuries" he owns is a decently sized bathtub with all the proper accommodations to get in and out without help.

Viktor is a snake person. They're easy to care for (if you just follow the right steps), easy to transport, don't require that much physical effort, will not wreck his house while he's gone, et cetera. Of course he doesn't have a twelve feet venomous one. Probably more of a cornsnake/Rosy boa guy. Which also means that the first time Jayce visits his apartment, the man almost dies in five consecutive heart attacks.

Jayce would definitely love a golden retriever I'm sorry he truly is the living bisexual boy stereotype. Physical affection, a good excuse to go outside for a run, force him to keep a routine. I actually think he would never own one on his own because he knows his schedule is way too fucked up for a pet, but Ximena does have one to keep her company and he loves it. I can only see this man with either a cat that comes to his balcony every night or some obscure brand of bird.

Jayce is amazing at cooking, but incredibly messy and takes his sweet time with it. He had time to learn from his mom and sees cooking as an act of love that should be appreciated. Viktor is really fast and efficient, but can end up with tasteless stuff. Grew up with hastily stolen ingredients and half a bottle of kitchen oil in Zaun. Food is fuel kind of mentality.

The only person who Viktor accepts constant help from is Jayce, and this is because he knows that Jayce is Just Like That. There was one or two big fights about it at first, but, with times, he's learned that Jayce is doing this out of the wish to show love and not out of pity or concern. Jayce is well aware that Viktor can adjust his own brace and has no problem with fixing his own tie, but he loves loves loves being useful.

This evolves in Viktor trying to reciprocate the gestures. Keeping Jayce's foundation on his bag (there is no way Mr. Charisma doesn't cover his eye bags every time they need to be in public) and learning how to properly apply makeup for him. He keeps an extra pair of earphones after finding out that Jayce is actually just as easily overstimulated as him. Remembers his coffee order, straightens out his collar, refills his stapler and clip drawer.

They are PARTNERS okay? I need the little domestic signals. No big "I love you's" but daily "I got you that cinnamon latte monstrosity you call a beverage" or "You forgot them? Don't worry. I have emergency pain pills in my wallet. Yes, the ones you take. No, it's technically not stalking if you leave the receipts laying around."

They both really enjoy videogames. Viktor likes noir/detective ones and Jayce is a fan of anything that includes racing. They seldom play the same game at the same time, more often just keeping the other company while doing their own thing.

They can both sew. Pretty similar to the cooking one. Jayce learnt for pleasure, Viktor out of necessity.

Have seen the other sob silently over failed equations and burnt metals so many times that they both have perfected the routine by now. Viktor likes to be given space and Jayce needs someone to come calm him down. Which is hell, because Jayce hates leaving Viktor alone. He feels useless. And Viktor heats having to do the whole consolation thing. He feels inadequate. But that's what the other needs, so they try.

When really stressed, Jayce has been known for having psychosomatic thermal issues. Viktor has had to throw blanket after blanker over him because he will Not Move if his body gets too cold, which in return makes him panic, which makes him even colder.

Both fuckin hate winter. It always finds them with So Many Extra Sweaters in the lab. Viktor carries an extra scarf around. Just in case. Jayce's PTSD gets triggered, while Viktor's body just reacts horribly to the cold. Some days they just wrap themselves up against one another and try to guard off the cold.

Viktor has some auditory hallucinations. Very rarely. Mostly of Rio. He doesn't want to talk about it. So he doesn't. Jayce notices, but knows better than to go poke and prode at Viktor's feelings. It doesn't usually end well.

Are both amazing at chess. Have threatened to kill each other over it. Had to take out the board from the lab after the sixth consecutive tie.

(Mel is actually the only other person in the building who can easily, quickly and steadily beat them, including when they work together. Even Heimerdinger gets thrown a few curves here and there)

Jayce Can Not stand it when Viktor is disrespected, but never steps in. He knows Viktor will defend himself and will only get in the middle of it if it gets physical. The one time he tried Viktor's cane met his shins about five times in a row. It was a "small warning about limits."

Jayce avoids ordering junk food when they work for hours, for both of their health. He also doesn't want to sacrifice taste, so he buys from two/three exclusive places that can meet their nutritional + palatial needs. Viktor can, will and has eaten only pizza for about three days straight.

Had he never been... well, the man of progress, Jayce would've turned into either a bioengineer or surgeon. I have no idea on how to explain this but I need u to believe me please (I'm just a healthcare student with severe delusions)

Jayce's mom makes a big deal of his birthday. Viktor denies being jealous. It doesn't work. Next year, Ximena also makes a big deal of his special day.

Viktor is currently unaware of his exact date of birth. He picked one based on analysis and what his mother could recount but has never known the exact number

Addition 1: Both are Well Aware of the law (Jayce's little sister is a cop + Viktor just like reading everything). Can both hold their own in a legal conversation. They just choose to ignore it. Have a vast knowledge of legal technicalities and use them only to bend said laws. The more they learn, the worse they get. Basically those guys who read the rulebook only to find loopholes on it.

You were friends with Taski first. Most entities didn’t pay any mind to the imp-thing so long as she didn’t hex them with a prank, but your schedule was always open and your door was always unlocked (she’d come through the window if it wasn’t) for whatever shenanigans she had planned for the day. Most days, she has a list of things she’s really excited to do with you that’s scribbled on a discarded notebook she plucked out of the trash or the corpse of a really flat, pale worm she scraped off of a tree. It’s common to see little pictures scribbled in the free space, portraying things like you and Taski sneaking into the Needle Course Casino, digging up fossils and tying big snails’ eyestalks together (it’s funnier when they trip up than when they trip down, according to her). You once asked Taski why she makes a list at all. She kept matching your stride, smile unwavering as she turned her head to look up at you. “To maximize, babeh. We only gotz so much time before you wanna go home or sumthin’ boring-slash-dumb like that. And once you���re gone, it’s not as fun. So. Maximizing.” You weren’t sure what to say. Didn’t she have fun on her own?

It’s an odd thing for a tricky vagabond like her, but you think that she’s started to develop a degree of separation anxiety. There are days where you can’t go out and flip the world upside down looking for treasure with Taski. Sometimes you need to spend the in-between at Doctor to remove the balloons that came out of you before they lift you into the sky, or you need to go to the Inquiry to to convince the entities there that they should take pineapple taxes instead of watermelon ones (watermelons are harder to get, of course, but it’s a whole thing that I’ll spare you the details of). You know. Professional stuff. When you get back home you find rings, perfect little crop circles, of strange padded footprints whose feet had spent the day pacing in the yard and on the roof, somehow, in agitation. Stewing. You had a good guess as to who it was. And when you see Taski again? She’s mad. Not too many of these disruptions happen before she turns to shadow and teeth and legs that endlessly wade through Hell. “ADMIT ITTT! YOU’RE T1RED OF MEEE!!! I KN0CKED AND KNOKKED AND KNOKCED AND PASED ALL DAY!!1 POO!” Confused and a little defensive, try to explain that there are certain obligations that were serious business. Why is she so upset about this? It’s not like she would have wanted to come along with you to such dry places. “SHUT UP!1 START TALKING! THATZ NOT TRUE!! You never even said anything or asked me or nuthin!! I woulda gone!!” You ask… why. “BECAUSE I JUST WOULDA! You’ll be bringing me with you next time, and DON’T FORGETI OR YOU'LL REGRETI, CHUMP!”

Taski insists that she goes with you whenever you have day plans, and when she insists, it doubles as a secret promise. You don’t necessarily mind having her come along with you, but you expect her to get bored pretty quickly and start causing chaos if she doesn’t have some sort of distraction. When you have to go to Inspection Plaza, Taski is already at your side and babbling about her lifetime ocean ban. A plan to keep her distracted begins rolling around in your head and your body spits out a subconscious gesture as a solution: an open hand extended to Taski. You hear a small gasp, and before you even realize what you’re doing, her hand is already grasping yours as tightly as it can, three digits clumsily interlocking with yours. Your mind catches up to the situation and you regain the mental faculties needed to be embarrassed, but as you go to withdraw, Taski holds on tighter. “NO! IT’S MINE!! NO BACK-TAKESIES!”

From then on, it is always time for handholding, and while touchiness isn’t something new coming from Taski, the small, tender gestures she starts adopting are. She starts gently pulling on your clothes to lead you in a direction or get your attention. She locks your arm between hers and lets you drag her around. Sometimes, when she’s particularly excited, she climbs up your torso and wraps her hands around your back, awkwardly hanging off of you like a front-facing backpack. You think you like her more than you first thought, and you find yourself unbothered by the new tendencies you seem to have unlocked in her. That is, until Taski decides that, as her favorite person, she doesn’t even want to part from you at the end of a skybox cycle well-spent. Normally she walks you all the way to your house and stands still at the doorway, hair slowly writhing around as she stares vacantly forwards. This time, though, she walks right on through with you and makes herself at home, moving past you and further into the house to properly inspect it. Her red eye rolls around excitedly as she fidgets with the front of her dress. “Ooh! You gotta house! I mean I know you gotta house but it has insidez!” You have no idea what she’s doing, and you don’t think she does either. You decide not to say anything; despite how weird it is, something tells you that it’s good to have her here. That night, it’s dark so you don’t see her—only hear her—crawl under your bed and sleep there. You pick up on a purr which modulates in pitch between a low rumble and a high-pitched droning, like a bug is buzzing around your head.

Things resume as normal—as normal as they get, anyway. You spend a LOT of time with Taski, skipping stones over rivers of liquid amber and having her cling to you at any other time. You think she might have a thing for you, and it’s pretty obvious in retrospect, but not as obvious as it is now. Smugly, albeit with a decidedly inhuman, dark gray blush, she gives you a challenge. “I got an epic challenge for you!! You gotsta look DEEEEEP into my cursed eye. NO BLINKING OR STINKING! And don look away or you LOSE!1! And to dump sugar in the dealio…” She fishes some sort of rainbow-colored ball of yarn out of her pocket(?). “Your epic challenge’s epicer prize!!” You accept—you know that she probably stole that or fished it out of a lake, but you don’t care. “Begin!!” And just like that your intense ¾ staring match began. You realized that her “cursed” red eye had little flickering images in the pupil the longer you looked—something resembling little feet walking in circles—but it was too tiny to see. You got closer and closer to see better, breath hitching when you realized you were, like, centimeters away from her face. Taski blushed furiously as she took advantage of the situation, grabbing the back of your head and forcing your lips together. She obviously didn’t know how to kiss, really, but that was superseded by her enthusiasm. It was like she was trying to eat you alive and sew your soul into desert flowers. When you separated, she was excited, shaking you back and forth. “WE RE4LLY! WE RE4LLY! I wanted to do that for so long!! Pleaze PLEAS CAN I BE YOUR FAVORITE THINGIE?! I CANT WAIT ANYMOR3!” But she was already your favorite thingie, and she always would be.

A/N #1: It is hard to write for Taski, but she's my favorite character so it's worth it. She misspells things and uses phrases incorrectly, sometimes mixing them, and that goes against my writer-instincts incredibly hard. (Ex: Instead of "sweeten the deal", she forgets the phrase and says "dump sugar in the dealio", similar to how she gets the order wrong for "cheater cheater pumpkin eater" and calls you a "pumpkin eater cheater" in-game. Little stuff like that is what matters.)

A/N #2: I don't think Taski "courts" normally. (Not that any ENA character does.) I think she just gets closer and closer and closer and one day you're married or some ENA-world equivalent before you even realized it. She just glides right into the relationship because that's pretty much her entire lifestyle and she's kind of feral.

AITA for thawing several frozen fossils -- and unleashing 4 eldritch creatures in the process -- to pay my rent?

I'm dealing with a landlord that keeps raising my rent and only letting me pay it with the "complimentary slot machine" in the building. It's a tedious and precarious situation to say the least. Recently, while using the machine, I ended up coming across a frozen fossil. These things have some sort of eldritch who-knows-what in them and those give me more passive income every time they eat a cultist or a witch or any of several hexes.

Well, I got a little carried away, and I kept picking up frozen fossils. Now there are 4 very happy eldritch creatures in my apartment, each of which is giving me maybe 18 bucks per creature, and my landlord is not happy about it. I could easily get rid of the creatures, but they're really saving my ass right now, and I've honestly grown kinda close to them. They're just weird, toothy dogs to me now. At the same time, I'm worried that this is just making my landlord want to evict me more. As far as I know it's not a no-pets-allowed building, but this is also a landlord with a slot machine we're talking about here, so I think that randomly changing the tenant rules isn't quite above them.

Lore

Hex is the second cloning experiment by Black Doom to create the ultimate weapon against the ultimate lifeform - designation PROJECT H3X-002 (hence her eventual name of Hex). Black Doom scientist’s attempt to make her more powerful was considered a success, but her color malfunctioned during the process, leading to albinism and may have contributed to a generally calm demeanor. Black Doom was happy when she displayed the ability to emit immense beams of energy that could easily destroy structures and limb detachment which allows her to emit two beams in two different directions at the same time, but he couldn’t get her to do so very often. Her sister, Paradox, was assigned to protect her and eventually, that protection was from Black Doom and his scientists as well as other external threats, leading to the third cloning experiment.

Once their youngest sister was born, a living weapon from the moment she emerged from the growth chamber, Hex was the one to suggest escape to Paradox. Although she’s a very quiet girl, she is often the one turning Paradox’s energy and rage where she wants it to go. She is also the reason the three of them were adopted by Sonic and Shadow in the first place, convincing Paradox to stop trying to fight their DNA donors and go with them.

Despite her willingness to manipulate people to get what she wants, for the most part, Hex is happy to buy cute gothic things and hunt for bones and fossils, an obsession that she had since finding a giant snake-like skeleton while exploring with Sonic one day when she was still small enough that he could carry her on his back while running. She has the same energy for exploration that Sonic has, but she cannot actually run even as fast as Shadow, and is often left behind. Her family makes efforts to always bring her back a bone or fossil or gothic trinket when they return from a trip if she can’t tag along.

She’s fine with spending time by herself, but she’s willing to spend time with Espio and Silver’s child, Amy and Surge’s youngest daughter, or Whisper and Tangle’s middle son if they happen to be around.

“I was wondering when you’d come here.”

Lilith was surprised to hear a familiar voice when she sank down into the booth, a pint of apple blood in front of her. 

It had been some time since she’d really talked to anyone outside of her sister and the colorful group currently living in the owl house. She told herself it was a safety precaution — most of her friends and acquaintances were high ranking members of her former coven, people loyal to Belos. Not people she could trust.

Or maybe that was an excuse she told herself, a reason not to let them see her in her current state.

But this was not a former colleague.

This was someone she had known since Hexside.

“Odalia?” Lilith watched as the green haired witch took a seat opposite of her. “Didn’t think I’d meet you here.” Her childhood friend had never been shy about her disdain for this hole-in-a-wall place.

“Well, yes, this place is a shithole,” Odalia said. “Exactly the place to look for a disgraced former Covenhead.”

Lilith winced and took a long swig from her apple blood. Not nearly as strong as the stuff Eda liked, but still enough to get a nice buzz. “Are you just here to insult me? Or is there something you want from me.”

Odalia rolled her eyes. “You always think the worst of me. Maybe I’m just trying to catch up with a friend? Maybe I’m concerned about an old friend who just lost everything?”

Lilith gave a humorless laugh. “Hah. You. Concerned. Very funny!” Lilith knew her better than that. Odalia looked at her, unaffected by the implied insult.

Lilith took another sip. “But I guess you are the first one to actually ask. Even my own mother didn’t bother,” she added in a low voice.

 “So. What happened?”

“You already know what happened. Everyone knows. Belos wanted to petrify Eda, and I couldn’t let that happen,” Lilith explained.

“Yes, I know that, obviously,” Odalia cut in. “I’m trying to figure out why you would throw it all away like that.”

“She’s my sister.”

“And a wild witch. Like all the other witches your coven captured and petrified in the last few years. Really, what did you expect to happen?” Odalia gave her an incredulous look.

“I- Belos promised he would heal her curse, if I got her to join,” Lilith argued. “I had to try, okay? How was I supposed to know he would go back on his word?” And then, realizing what Odalia said, she added, “And — and also, the last public petrification was thirty years ago.”

Odalia gave her a look. “You know you don’t have to spew his lies anymore, do you? I’m not part of your coven (Lilith coughed), sorry, former coven. But I know my customers. I notice when they disappear, and I know the difference between a statue and a fossil.”

Lilith balled her hands, feeling new guilt well up inside her. “We — he said they were irredeemable. Too dangerous to risk ever escaping.” Lilith shut her eyes and sank her head. “Oh Titan, I was such an idiot.”

“Yes, yes, Belos is a crook, what else is new.”

That stopped Lilith, because it was new. At least from Odalia. In their over thirty years of friendship, this was the first time she had ever heard the oracle talk so disrespectfully about the Emperor.

“I - what?” Lilith needed a moment to. "You knew? Know? But you never said anything to me."

“You were his Headwitch. Loyal enough to sell out your own sister,” Odalia stated. “I’ve gotta think of my own. And you wouldn't have listened, anyway."

“Hmpf. I guess that’s fair.” Lilith took another long gulp from her apple juice, the glass looking almost empty now.

"Not that it really matters. Crook or not, Belos is still the most powerful witch on the Isles." Odalia didn't sound particularly happy about it, Lilith noted.

They sat there in silence for a few moments as Lilith continued stewing in her thoughts.

“You know that you’re the first one of them to approach me?” she eventually said, bitter. She didn’t feel the need to specify that she was talking the small group of friends they were a part of since Hexside.

“Really?” Odalia sounded genuinely surprised.

“Yep.” Lilith finished her apple blood. “Not even my own mother sought me out. Not a word, not even a text or letter.”

“Well, I can’t speak for the others, but Alador has been very busy with work lately. Not that he’s ever been the social type, mind you.”

“He’s not overworking himself again, I hope?” Lilith continued, happy for the excuse not to talk about her own pathetic life for the moment.

“Please, that man is never happy unless he’s elbow deep in an abomination goo or tinkering on some new invention.”

“Sure. But you can still have too much of a good thing,” Lilith argued, speaking from experience. She’d definitely overdone it a few times while studying under Flora.

“Pfff. He’s not your husband, okay. And it’s kind of out of my hands now, anyway,” Odalia grumbled.

“Out of your hands?”

Odalia sighed and leaned forward, beckoning Lilith to come closer. “We recently had a visit from your least favorite upstart at the factory.”

Her least favorite– Oh. “The Golden Guard?” Lilith whispered back.

Odalia nodded. “He threatened to investigate our business if we don’t comply - not that we're actually doing anything illegal, of course - and now we’re selling exclusively to the Emperor’s Coven.” She leaned back. “At least they pay decently. But still. The audacity of that guy.”

“Huh. So, the Emperor’s Coven is buying home security…” Lilith mumbled more to herself.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Lilly,” Odalia interrupted her with a cold laugh.  “They’re not buying home security."

Then the business witch got serious.

"They're buying an army. "

EE Lyrics Study: teeth/bones/nails

Hello! This is my first "lyric study" for the band Everything Everything and the topic is: BONES/TEETH/NAILS.

Basically, when listening to their music, I kept noticing words related to this topic and I was curious if the topic actually existed across their discography. I marked every lyric that included key words:

bone, skull, teeth, vertebrae, fossil, etc.

I did a little research to see the cultural significance or any other meaning/symbolism of these words. I didn't want to dive too much into the actual meaning of the lyrics*** or the greater context of the song, but instead looked at the overall patterns of the key words.

I notice that in EE's lyrics, bones/teeth are mostly used to evoke images of graphic things being done to a body or to liken humans to other animals/creatures. There's mentions of bones both inside a living human and in someone/something that's dead.

Personally, I interpret these uses as a more shocking or uncomfortable way to refer to those parts of the body (e.g. teeth instead of smile, clavicle instead of collar, skull instead of head), which is pretty on-brand for EE's provocative lyrics/themes.

Anything about Ben and Rose, you say? Do you have a minute😅😂? Well, my main headcanon about them is that they had a happy marriage, and that Rose has died when the two Harvey kids were younger. Old enough to still remember her though. I don't have a clear headcanon about her cause of death, though I think it would be due to something fast(or even instant) and heartbreaking. First World-like almost, something they thought could be easily prevented or fixed in their world.

What was Rose like: In my mind I see her as kind of the now-missing piece of the puzzle within the Ben-Saul-Farah friendgroup, starting during their teens (so in school). A redhead or a dirty blonde, on the shorter size (between 1.60 and 1.65m I'd say?), and a bit plump. Earth fairy.

Terra is a lot like her, bubbly, friendly, but I think Rose would not have been shy like her (but not necessarily a social butterfly). She would try to stay optimistic a lot of the time, which easily got mistaken for being oblivious, but she actually had a very sharp mind. Someone who loved fiercely, was protective, loved a bit of friendly gossip, and liked to playfully tease Ben, but especially Farah and Saul (and at the same time try play matchmaker for them. Her succes rate was debatable). I think her lesser qualities would be that she would put other's wellbeing before her own, and she could be short-tempered if provoked (looking at you, teen Andreas).

She would've either been Farah's suitemate, or perhaps a friend of Ben's first. A bit of a nerd, though not as much as Ben. Mostly interested in magical properties of crystals and fossilized plants, so geology and archaeobotany? I don't think Rose would join the Battalion troups, she would either work somewhere else completely or work at a base or something.

What did they see in each other: I think they would have been similar in a lot of ways (their interests, magic type, kindness, protectiveness, etc), but different enough to make things interesting. They complement each other in that way. I'd like to think it would grow slowly, and Rose would actually be oblivious to her own feelings for a long while (big case of irony as she would always tease Farah about Saul). Ben would like her but be too shy to do anything about it, but eventually take the first step.

Rose would like Ben for his kindness, their similarities in humor, being smart, and find his long tangents about certain plants and their medicinal properties adorable (I can hear Farah, Saul and Andreas groan while typing this). Later on she got to discover his romantic and caring side.

Ben would like Rose for her wit, humor and patience, and would follow her around the earth and back if she'd asked. He would admire her parenting skills, though they would be very much a team in that.

Fave headcanons I'd like in my gift: I'd love some Rose and Ben teasing Farah and Saul shenanigans (or even those first two teaming up to play match makers for the latter two), or something angsty/sad surrounding Rose's death. And if it's not a Ben/Rose centered gift, then a bit of them in the background would be lovely ☺. But as long as they're not divorced and hate(d) each other's guts I'll be happy! 💚
