Album Review: John Hurlbut & Jorma Kaukonen - One More Lifetime

The subtle-but-dynamic interplay between John Hurlbut’s rhythm and Jorma Kaukonen’s lead guitar dances across the channels like sunshine sparkling on water on the duo’s second LP, One More Lifetime.

Ceding the vocals to Hurlbut and temporarily abandoning the blues licks of his solo and Hot Tuna projects, Kaukonen plays folksy runs on the fretboard as Hurlbut lends six-string support and adds his slightly Dylanesque voice to six covers and two of his own compositions.

One More Lifetime nabbed its title from Peter Rowan’s “Angel Island,” which leads things off and sets the guitarists up for fairly straightforward renditions of songs by the likes of Woody Guthrie (“Pastures of Plenty”), Bob Dylan (“I’ll Remember You”) Fred Neil (“Everybody’s Talkin’”) and Kaukonen’s old pals the Grateful Dead on Pigpen’s “Operator.”

Hurlbut and Kaukonen were wise not to mess too much with such quality compositions. The fresh coat of sonic paint and hearing Kaukonen in this unfamiliar setting is all they needed.

Insisto con Edgar Broughton, con la tremenda versión del súper clásico "Morning Dew" de Bonnie Dobson (febrero de 1962) en su "Break The Dark" (octubre de 2023). Se supone que es una composición con música de Bonnie y letra de Tim Rose, pero Dobson niega que Rose escribiera la letra de la canción. Dice que sin darse cuenta había puesto la letra en el dominio público y que cuando Rose la grabó en 1967, él tenía los derechos de autor de la letra. Según ella, Fred Neil realizó algún cambio menor en la letra cuando grabó la canción en el dúo Martin & Neil (1964), y Rose no hizo ninguna alteración significativa en la letra modificada por Neil. Dobson cree claramente que Rose reclamó de forma indebida los derechos de autor de su trabajo. La afirmación de Dobson es creíble ya que Rose también dijo que "Hey Joe" era una canción tradicional y, sin embargo, tenía derechos de autor sobre un arreglo de la canción.
