How I Got My Agent, Take Two
I’m so ridiculously over the top happy to say I’ve signed with a literary agent to sell my magical bookbinder book.  This has been a long process that started in 2017, and I’m genuinely overjoyed.
It played out thus:
Write book one.
Write book two. Query the book.
Write book three. Query the book.
Write book four. Get into Pitch Wars with the book. (Yay!) Query the book.
Write book five. Get into Author Mentor Match with the book. (Yay!) Query the book.
Write book six.
Write book seven.
Write book eight.
Write book nine.
Get a Revise and Resubmit offer from an agent for book five. Do it.
Start querying book six.
Get an offer from the R&R (Yay!)
Write book ten.
Book five dies on submission.
Start writing book eleven.
My agent and I amicably part ways.
Start writing book twelve.
Finish querying book six.
Query book ten.
Start writing book thirteen.
Go back to book eleven.
Go to a live pitch event. Pitch book eleven to two agents. Neither likes it. One asks what else I’m working on, and when I do the one sentence pitch for book twelve, says, “I could sell that.”
Pivot to finishing that book.
Query book twelve, sending queries first to four agents who only want queries and who are actively requesting off those queries. Get a 75% request rate. Query is fire. Check.  Unfortunately, every agent rejects when they see the opening pages, which turn out not to be fire.
Revise opening
Resume querying book twelve.  In case you’ve lost count, while this is the twelfth book I’ve written, it’s ‘only’ the seventh I’ve queried.
Finish drafting book thirteen in NaNo. Revise. Send to CPs.
Have existential crisis on a Tuesday. Meltdown on Tumblr. Weep in my living room. All my books have failed.  I do not know how to write a better book.  Maybe I should give up. This turns out to be a very well-timed dark night of the soul within the narrative.
Get two full requests for book twelve on Wednesday.
Get an email telling me one of my short stories has been held for consideration on Thursday.
On Friday get an email that the woman who handles submissions for one of those agents from Wednesday loved the book but she doesn’t think it’s a great fit for the agent I queried.  Would I mind if she forwarded it in-house to a different agent?  In shocking news, I would not mind this.
On Monday, get an email asking for a call.
On Wednesday, which is Valentine’s Day, have a call with the agent.  She’s lovely in every way, her thoughts on the book are so good, every editorial idea she floats is good. Like, really good.  She is super enthusiastic about repping the book and offers to do so.
There is an etiquette requirement at this point that I tell any agent who has the book that I have an offer on the table and give them two weeks to respond, so I go around nudging all the agents with a full (four people) and several agents who only have a query. Three more agents request fulls. The rejections start trickling in.  People are very sweet and complimentary, and I am deeply, deeply relieved that I never waver from how much I adore the original offering agent.
I sign with her on February 29.
Final stats for Book Twelve (THE ARCHIVE OF THE WORLD):
Total Queries Sent:  39 Requests Before Offer: 8 (20.5% request rate) Request Rate Including Post-Offer Requests: 28.2%
Year I Started this Nonsense:  2017 Total Queries Sent across 7 books:  456
Takeaway wisdom:  The query trenches are a soul-mangling machine into which we all keep putting our souls and most of us don’t make it out unmangled.  I am not unmangled. BUT, I am a persistence hunter, and I will walk steadily towards publishing until it lies down in exhaustion and gives up.
Thanks for hanging out with me as I do.
Also, this book is so much fun.  You’re going to love it.

Flashback Friday: Tzeschlena-Ra
Tumblr media
"Smoke in the Night" - steel-plate aquatint, 2017
Tumblr media
"Tzeschlena-Ra" - marker drawing, 2016
Some old art I did as a college sophomore, when I was perhaps just starting to expand upon the ancient histories and myths of my con-species, the maniraptoran Vita-Ra.
The subject of these two illustrations was dubbed "Tzeschlena-Ra" and was basically a fairy or jinn-like being or race or beings from a then undefined "Vita-Ra Classical Mythology." Capricious, mischievous, and occasionally (but not always) sinister figures of lore. The name translates as something like "magic people" or "intangible people," but with an implicit connotation to smoke and/or shadow (kennings and alt. names would explicitly include words for smoke or shadow).
The Tzeschlena-Ra was distantly related to a figure known as the "Laughing God" that may have originated in the beliefs of a pre-Classical culture. At the time, I thought of them as its children or servants, but perhaps Tzeschlena-Ra could be a derivation of the Laughing God entity, assimilated into a newer religion (perhaps like how Ireland's Tuatha Dé Danann are thought to be derived from pre-Christian deities).
I think Gunnerkrigg Court's depiction of Coyote, or the Navajo artwork that probably inspired that depiction of Coyote, had some influence on the visual design.
I didn't know much about conlangs and linguistics when I invented the name, so I will probably revise it at some point in the future.

Sobs - Air Guitar
(Power Pop, Indie Rock, Jangle Pop)
A vision of indie rock where cosmopolitan power pop is steeped in the sound of 2000s electronica, skater punk and 90s twee pop, Sobs' first album in four years is the trio's every ambition realized. Pulling entirely away from the interior dream pop of their debut, Air Guitar's fizzy pop tunes give Celine Autumn's fantasies of love and heartbreak a timeless effervescence.
☆☆☆☆☆
From burnout often comes the most necessary artistic turnarounds, and that has never been truer for Sobs. Dropping into the 2010's indie pop scene with 2017's wonderfully pensive Catflap EP and their full-length debut Telltale Signs the year after, Sobs' relaxed bedroom pop sound made their hooks and chewy melodies land immediately and the trio's charm readily apparent, but it limited them to the point they needed to start exploring new ideas before stepping up to the plate again. Vocalist/guitarist Celine Autumn found herself embracing the brash and bold colors of hyperpop on her 2021 Cayenne EP, co-produced with Sobs bandmate Jared Lim, and the sugarcoated sound of those four glossy electropop tunes infects Sobs' jangly indie rock by way of 90s power pop and electronica, their sophomore album Air Guitar four years in the making with all the sharpness and perfection you'd expect from that timeframe as Autumn sings of cold romances and the anxiety of a sparkly new relationship with Lim's production and engineering evoking everything from skater punk to 90s twee pop to 80s new wave as he brightens up all the corners and leaves no area without a splash of neon paint. It's a constant rush of energy coming at you, but Sobs refuses to let a second of Air Guitar go to waste, their post-internet stew of modern production and classic indie rock formulas full of life and spotless no matter where you look. Lighter and lovelier than most of their fast-paced indie rock contemporaries, Sobs take advantage of power pop's huge choruses and crisp melodies in a myriad of genres, their inspirations ranging from Advantage Lucy's playful indie pop to C86 jangle pop to Weezer-indebted pop rock as Air Guitar scales up and down the trio's ambitious tree of ideas. Lucked Out stuffs a verse, two choruses and a bridge into less than two minutes, Autumn challenging herself to write the catchiest melody possible while Lim and Raphael Ong riff on noisy guitars and Shaun Khiu's killer drum work - his contributions to the album a constant delight whether it's the plain backbeat groove on Dealbreaker or LOML's four-on-the-floor kick & snare along with flashy drum fills when the moment calls. These are just some damn good pop songs, whether it comes in the form of Friday Night's drum 'n' bass-infused electropop, the grungy power pop highlight Burn Book, or a lighthearted Gwen Stefani in the case of Cool, Sobs' embrace of bigger instrumentation and hefty hooks holding onto the warmth and enclosure of their previous releases while making songs big enough to fill an entire stadium. Air Guitar is plain and simple indie pop through and through, but Sobs provide such a thrilling spin on things that they end up in a league entirely of their own. What balances all this bubblegum pop magic out is Autumn's songwriting and the band's thoughtful detours, Air Guitar's lamentations on unavailable love and the ache of new romance not just a layer of melancholy draped on top of raucous indie pop tunes but a core part of how the music unfolds. On the title track, sparkly synths and distortion-coated guitars play of the dissonance of an unnurturing partner she can't quite seem to drop ("I was searching for peace / But you swept through like nature / Changed the trajectory"), too nervous to officially end things but desperately searching for escape in the song's glimmering guitar work and tense percussion, and the post-punk kick of World Implode on the album's back half constructs a shoegaze noise wall around Autumn's most tender feelings of of imposter syndrome and held-back desire ("Is it weird, though I try to, I could never forget? / Does it make it any easier for us to pretend?"). Indie rock has existed at the intersection of introspection and escape for as long as easily accessible recording equipment has been around, but Sobs truly take advantage of it as technicolor swirls of noise pop (LOML) and synth-soaked jangle pop (Dealbreaker) juxtapose sensitive and heartfelt writing that draws from the history of confessional rock music without bending to its will, Sobs' own wavelength guiding them everywhere they go. Air Guitar is lovingly crafted pop songs with a dimension of depth and diversity to them few other bands can match, Sobs able to cram a discography's worth of ideas into 30 minutes and distill only the best elements of their music into these ten tracks regardless. It never feels overstuffed or hodgepodge because Sobs knows exactly how much they can fit into a good pop song before it completely bursts, always pushing the boundaries with Friday Night's surprise ending or the 90s grunge-pop kick of Burn Book but never losing tipping the scales too far one way. After four years of absence, they've absolutely nothing to lose and use the opportunity to try anything and everything with Air Guitar, their sublime hooks and fun instrumentation unsurprising for a trio so well-versed in indie pop but absolutely stunning in how they're contorted to execute some of the coolest ideas rock music has ran into this year. Air Guitar risks it all going for a home run time and time again, but they land every swing so solid that it's impossible to imagine how these songs could have turned out any other way.

ALBUM OF THE DAY: The Alvvays - Antisocialites (2017) (9/?)
WHICH PEDRO BOY IS BASED ON? Javi Gutiérrez
ALBUM VIBES (listen to it on Spotify)
With an easy-going vibe and general optimism sound, Antisocialites is the kind of album that pushes you up through the mix of the guitar, echoey vocals, and a synth that evokes the 60s Yé-Yé. The perfect album to match the impulsive and always sweet Javi G, who likes to understand the world around him and to be a resource for those he cares about. Oh, and we also have a song about being a fan of someone you are close with an LSD reference.

First Line Analysis
I got this idea from the prompt below:
Rules: Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able and see if there are any patterns! (from most recent to least recent, starting from the top)
But I decided to try and do all of my past works and see what I could find. I'll color code by fandom and link them all if any pique your interest, but this is mostly just for fun.
Top Gun/Top Gun Maverick
SEAWOLF (OC (Rooster's kid), Iceman lives, werewolves).
A couple of nights later, Rooster learns why they got certified.
2. Taco Shop (Hangman & Everyone).
Along the way he runs towards into Hangman, returning from the mess with a snarl on his face.
3. For the Love of a Daughter (dark!TopGun, Murder fic).
It’s been a hell of a year for Bradley Bradshaw.
4. Seven Rings (And Other Things) (Carol/Goose & Rooster)
They were Carol’s mothers.
5. Like Washin' on the Line (Jake "Hangman" Seresin, Origin).
Texas has some wolves.
6. A Snowballs Chance in Space (TGM x Star Wars The Clone Wars).
The looming gray airbase is a welcome reprieve from the terrain they’ve trekked for hours.
7. Crashin' and Burnin' (In) (Bob & Phoenix)
Bob stumbles into his briefing the next morning with hair disheveled, glass dirty, and his flight suit crumpled.
8. Welcome Home (Harvard & Sarah Kazansky)
Sarah Kazansky is the closest thing he’s had to a mom in years, and Brigham is entirely unsure how to handle it.
9. What to Say to You? (Rooster & Daughter OC).
Put in for Theresa’s graduation - Check.
10. Ivy Leaguers (Harvard & Yale, Origin)
Ensign Brigham Lennox is an escapee from one of the most notorious cults in the contiguous United States.
11. The Office (OC & Hondo Coleman)
Hondo’s office is in some god forsaken corner of the NAS Coronado compound.
12. 5 Times Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky was Worried More than He let on + 1 Time He Wasn't (Iceman lives, 5 + 1).
He had prayed for years that after Bosnia, that would be it.
13. You Had Me at Heads Carolina (Penny/Maverick)
Legally, last call in California is 2 am, but Penny’s has always been 1:30, though she never kicks anyone out until 2.
14. It Smells Like Victory (Jake Hangman Seresin & OC)
He’s really starting to wonder if Theresa picked out the doormat, because If I like you, Check the Garage is something Maverick or Rooster might think, but he’s pretty sure they’re not going to actively put it on a doormat.
15. ...What I Call this One? (Jake Hangman Seresin & Cyclone)
Fuck Mondays, Cyclone groans, rubbing his head.
16. Don't You Wish You Knew... (Hangman & Omaha)
It’s odd not getting the customary gruff good morning from Admiral Simpson as he passes his office on his way to the briefing room.
17. My Pilot, My Responsibility (Halo & Omaha)
The real saying is “My wizzo, my responsibility.”
18. Take me Home, Country Roads (Slider & Mav & Rooster)
It’s weird, seeing an animal dead that you know was alive merely an hour ago.
19. Drunk Dials (On Friday Nights) (Maverick & Phoenix)
3 am Wyoming time.
20. Baby Goose (Carol & Goose & Rooster & OC)
It’s a term of endearment, welded to Rooster by association since he was just a baby.
21. Shooting from the Hip (Maverick & Rooster & OC)
Rooster hasn’t touched a gun since basic.
22. I Heard from the Heavens (Major Character Death, Rooster)
“Beautiful day for a flight, huh Mav?” Roosters muses.
23. Mistakes were made, but You're not one of Them (Rooster & OC)
Rooster’s phone buzzes something fierce on that quiet afternoon.
Hocus Pocus
24. Abracadabra An Unofficial Hocus Pocus Sequel (Dennison Children OC's, Sanderson Sisters, written pre-HP2, fusion fic)
It was a late summer night in Salem; silent, cool, and very, very dark.
25. Hocus Pocus: Magic's Return (Sanderson Sisters, written pre-HP2)
"Poor Thackery Binx. Neither his father, his mother, nor anyone else... ever knew what became of him... those 300 years ago."
Beauty and the Beast
26. Beauty and a Beast (2017, AU, Gaston/Belle, Pere Robert)
“What do you mean you won’t marry us?” Gaston bellowed.
27. Can Anybody be Happy if They aren't Free? (2017, Belle/Beast)
“Is it true that he held you captive?”
Ninjago (All Media)
28. Ninjago Season 16: Succession (AU, departed!Cole, Script Fic)
[We open above a cloud line about mid-day and facing forward.]
29. The Master of Earth (AU, departed!Cole, RIP Kirby Morrow)

30. The Nya Interlude (AU, missing!Nya, grief, remembrance)
The day broke sunny and cheerful, though not one shared the sentiment.
31. "It Seems All of our Stories Start this Way" (AU, departed!Cole)

Hamilton
32. the gods three (AU, Hamilton x Star Wars elements)
Light.
33. Hamilfam Death Days (Post Canon, Afterlife)
John Laurence is the first of the Hamilfam to go.
Miscellaneous
34. Power Rangers Star Force (Star Wars x Power Rangers)
It’s not easy to hide the disappearance of a junior senator.
35. Christos (Supernatural (2005), AU, priest!Sam, priest!Dean)
“Hurry up Sam, I don't know how much longer I can hold him."
36. Susan Pevensie's Later Years (Narnia, Post-Last Battle, OC)
Melody Glasgow is 8 when her mother is diagnosed with cancer.
37. The Newbie: An Avengers Story (Avengers Assemble (tv show), MCU elements, X-Men elements, OC)
My name is Shiloh, Shiloh Miller.
38. "Chin Up King" (Technoblade Tribute, Technoblade never dies)
As the King watches the sun set over his enemies' camp, he realizes that this will test his very being.
Notes:
A Snowballs Chance in Space and the gods three are both Star Wars crossovers; however, the Star Wars elements only exist as inspiration or background components, so I choose to include them with their primary fandom.
The Master of Earth and "It Seems All of our Stories Start this Way" begin with the same line as one is a rewrite of the other (I can't remember which is which at this point as they are some of my earliest fics).
Although both Beauty and the Beast fics are listed as being for the 2017 live action remake, with the exception of Pere Robert they can be set after the events of the original animated movie.
Abracadabra is a reworking of Magic's Return, but both have their own canons, different sets of characters, etc. Only Magic's Return is truely written pre-HP2, because I was publishing parts of Abra before, during, and after the release of HP2.
Analysis:
I consistently include characters in my first lines.
When I don't, I'm setting up the location or time period.
I tend to use short, sweet first lines.
When I don't use short first lines, I use hella long ones bro.
Of the works I've published on Archive, only a couple of them are from other sights (The Newbie and maybe Magic's Return were up on quotev, and both were either posted and completed or begun while I was in middle school.)
The most works I've written for a fandom is Top Gun Maverick (23). Of those, 22 are one shots, and one is a long fic (177K words).
My longest fic is SEAWOLF (177K words) and my shortest is Beauty and a Beast (259 words, a literal ficlet).
The shortest first line belongs to the gods three (one word) and the longest belongs too It Smells like Victory (41 words).
7 titles (all for Top Gun) are references to songs/they're lyrics.
9 titles are references to the media they are inspired by (a couple flat references, but mostly direct and indirect quotes).
24 first lines include direct references to other characters.
I personally can tell how my writing has evolved based on the first lines, and I'm pretty sure you can tell which of these is my first line based on the first line alone.
It's been like two months since I started working on this post, but now it's done. I will occasionally reblog with updates to the list as I post new writing.

INSIGNIFICANCE VERSUS SIGNIFICANCE ANNOUNCEMENT4
Announcement4 Headlines:
Recent Activities
Block1: Champion Streak Series
Block2: Double Dilemma
Coming Up Announcement
Recent Activities After I posted up IVS Announcement3, I been working on the following:
I was writing about the process that I have to go through to come my decision on developing the 6 Blocks. I titled that writing as PTTS Champion Streak Series. The following are the highlights: Painstakingly Moving On With the End of My Presidency. Also, my struggles in the 2 periods of time from September 2012 to April 2017.
Each Blocks have 5-6 parts. I was working on Part1 of Insignificane Versus Significane Block.
Block1: Champion Streak Series Champion Streak Series is a time for celebration. Also, to have the championship and hall of fame be cohesive with the standard. This cohesion is equivalent to wealth. The celebration and wealth are the positive energy and abundant. The opposing force would be the negative energy and barren. This mean to continues with the celebration and wealth mean to deny the negative energy and barren that could jeopardize the Champion Streak Series.
Because it is the first Block, there are conflicts with new development. Also, risks of not able to get notice. So, this title will give this first Block higher chances of getting recognition. Example: It is part of the establishment of Hall of Fame that Champion Streak Series get to be post up in the Hall of Fame and get some kind of recognition.
No longer putting the higher standard to the side. Example: First Place is equivalent to higher standard.
I'm clearing away as many misunderstanding as possible by emphasizes on being truthful. First place placement is the highest placement in the tournament. There are players, spectators, and coordinators as witness for my accumulation of 199 first places in the tournaments. The highest placement and witness is like making association with being truthful.
From a potential player who haven't been in a Pokemon tournament before to having a 10 first places streak in the weekly Pokemon tournament on my first 10 tournament participations. So, I intended for readers to see the rush of Positive Energy. Also, riding the wave of the Champion Streak Series right away as those readers are reading through this Block. In addition, to stay true to the truthfulness, I kept the rigid, youthfulness, and teenage year obligations in my writing. Furthermore, in each weekly Pokemon tournaments, I have the following formula: Experience Point I gained, the feedbacks I received, the thoughts that are in my head, and my preparation for the follow up next tournament. Last but not least, I included a tip section on the following: Deck Biographies on the 10 Tournament First Place Decks (TFPD). Some of the plays I was able to connected successfully in the tournaments. Around 10 or more step by step illustrations. And, so on.
Block2: Double Dilemma Double Dilemma is the most conflicted time of my life. Also, all the conflicts in my life happen to me at the same time. This mean the Double Dilemma is a disaster that greatly depressed and degerated my life. In addition, I would wanted to argues that getting run over by a car is better than no one believe me on my talks about the Double Dilemma in my life. The stereotype is since I'm overwhelmed by the disaster and great depression in my life. Also, at that point of time, there were no immediate solution. So, when I'm too distress out about my life. I would looks for an escape from my life. Because I have the title for having the most first places in San Diego, California tournaments. So, the weekly MTG (Magic The Gathering) tournament would be more than an escape for me. The weekly MTG tournament is known as Friday Night Magic (FNM). It could be my dream career. So, I decided to follow the Champion Streak Series Block and develops the Double Dilemma Block. The following is this Block goals:
I sees the Double Dilemma in my life as TCG Pioneer conflicts. Example: Instead of adding more problems to my life. I would makes the arguments that TCG Pioneer is a very difficult work.
I would writes about what happen in my weekly MTG tournaments experience. So, people don't have to make stereotypes and/or arguments on why I participated in the weekly MTG tournaments.
Furthermore, like the Champion Streak Series Block, I included a tip section. Also, I would have around 10 or more illustrations. This time I would expanded on the tip section.
Coming Up Announcement The 2 Blocks descriptions above are 2 out of the 6 Blocks. Also, along with this announcement, I will post up the logos I created for each of the 6 Blocks. On my coming up announcement, I will post up the other 3-6 Blocks descriptions.

Nathaniel rateliff backup singers
Tumblr media
Both of this soulful, talented acts should be seen and savored. 13 appearance, which featured Rateliff, his backing band the Night Sweats and a trio of backup singers (on Redemption, at least), cemented the barrel-chested blues revivalist as. Get to the JetBlue as the sun begins to set over West Palm Beach, and then stay planted. While Rateliff has been making music on his own and with other acts since 2002, he has had The Night Sweats by his side for the last five years and four studio albums. He’s shared stages with Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, Ben Howard, Mumford & Sons, Rosanne Cash, and a slew of other artists that will make your achy heart race.
