Tattoos are often symbolic, but I somehow missed the symbolism of these ones until now. I just now realized that Terry Milkovich has a tattoo above his heart that is hate speech, while Mickey Milkovich got a tattoo above his heart in a pronouncement of love.
Terry got to his son's knuckles early and made it the first thing people saw. Fuck u-up that's what Mickey Milkovich will do, that's what any Milkovich will do, but Terry couldn't get to his core, couldn't put hate there, because Ian Gallagher got there and didn't let go.
I also think it's interesting how after Terry died, we found out about his past with a woman he loved. He had done everything he could to be with her and ultimately killed for her, and she rejected him, leading him to a life of hate and anger. He just gave up on this woman and being with her. (He killed her father, so it's a bit hard to come back from, but still)
Mickey did everything to be with Ian, came out for him, took care of him, and attempted to kill Sammi for what she did to Ian, but he still got broken up with. He could easily have gone the path of his father, of hating Ian, hating everyone, but instead he carved Ian's name into him and asked him to lie, for him, because 8 years was a long time. His thoughts of them together kept him going in prison until he could escape, and when he did he found Ian again. And even then Mickey didn't hate him for not being able to cross the boarder because the love in his heart was stronger than any hate or bitterness, to the point he didn't hesitate to turn himself in to be with Ian once again.
I mean, how fucking beautiful is that? Mickey became the most loving person by being loved. He's not his father, and he'll never be his father, because he never gave up on love like Terry did. At his core Mickey is love.
Trying to get all WIPs complete for new year . Not complete still a WIP but at least a new chapter
Aftermath , healing and new information. Mickey takes it in stride and processes the best he can with his prison support . Also Ian slides in a happy love side note to Mickey .
Countdown to Gallavich reunion starting now .
Triggers, death, murder and abuse
Happy art though to soothe the angst by @darthvaders-wife
being a Discworld fan honestly should be, like, the #1 book recommending a person sort of things, and i hate that it's not because so many of his fans get it so wrong. like. i try not to get incensed about people being wrong on the internet, but how anyone reads these books and thinks this man was a bigot, thinks the representation he put in Discworld was at the expense of those represented, like. like. i'm furious about it. every time. especially as he continued to learn and grow both as a writer and as a person. even stuff that was originally meant to be a little silly, like a female dwarf, he found meant a lot to people, and he learned how to better include that story!
(spoilers ahead for Shepherd's Crown)
he leaned into it in the most loving and respectful way. fucking READ The Shepherd's Crown!!!!! the man found out trans women identified with his character so he learned how to represent them! and then, he wrote Jackrum! AND THEN HE WROTE GEOFFREY!!!!! with his last fucking book he gave us a character who says he doesn't really feel like a man or a woman, just himself, fucking ages before anyone else was writing nonbinary characters! AND HE PUT HIM IN GRANNY WEATHERWAX'S FUCKING COTTAGE Y'ALL! LIKE HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS BECAUSE I HAVE SOBBED SO FUCKING MUCH ABOUT IT! (Note that obviously Geoffrey doesn't have/use different language for himself, but that's how he feels and pronouns are not gender.)
thanks to how he handled Cheery and how he went from there, Pratchett included trans representation for ALL of us SO SO SO SO SO LONG before we were on anyone else's radar, and it's honestly so much more respectful than some of the stuff i've seen out there more recently!!!!!
he wasn't perfect, and a lot of social standards have evolved since the earlier Discworld books especially, but he always kept an open mind and listened and tried and grew. and there are people out there insisting he would be this hateful bigot!!!!! i hate them!!!!! let me hire the fucking assassin's guild!!!!!
it's been a week and i still haven't recovered </3 so i did a little sketch with this scene between normal and scary because it fucked me up and i need more moments of them comforting and caring for each other
tiffany in i shall wear midnight makes me so fucking sad. like. she's the witch of the entire chalk. she rarely laughs. she calls people NOT EVEN 3 years younger than her 'kids'. she deals with things not even grown man could stomach. she comforts her own father multiple times when he tries comforting her bc she feels BAD for him. she constantly keeps herself in check around EVERYONE. she hates herself for oversleeping or sleeping at all bc she could've DONE things in that time people NEED her. she takes away people's pain every day. she witnesses a murder and its not the first time and she buries the baby and saves the abusive father bc she doesn't want her people's conscience to be tainted with his murder. she plants flowers (WHICH SHE BUYS WITH HER OWN HARD EARNED MONEY) on the grave of an old woman who died bc people said she was a wicked old witch and turned her out of her own house so they wont EVER forget. she has to do it all alone and she wishes she hadn't. she finds in herself sympathy for EVERYONE, no matter how bad they treated her or others. when they lock her in the dungeon her biggest concern is other people . she opened a school bc she wanted ppl to find out who they are like she did. she's not even 16.
something about the fact that Hermie wasn't even supposed to exist, the fact that he only came into being because Beth was fucking around with an anagram generator and he was funny enough to keep around. (something about the fact that Anthony clearly liked him enough to not want him to be a total creep, and retconned an explanation that he was method acting as the Joker.) something about the fact that Paeden didn't mind getting frequently forgotten by the PCs, but Hermie minded a lot, and that was funny, so it became a running gag. something about the fact that all his flirting and messing with Normal was motivated by his single most important desire in life: getting attention, and more specifically, attention from Normal. (something about the fact that he seeks attention more than he seeks love.) something about neither of his dads wanting him, of the party not wanting him (of the cast not wanting him). something about the fact that it was clearly specified that Scam spawned him into existence, meaning he might not even have a soul, meaning he might be gone forever without even the possibility of reunion in the afterlife. something about the fact that he outlived his usefulness, and the only significant or meaningful thing he could do for narrative or characters was to die. (something about "he's basically a free kill that changes nothing in the story.") something about him saying in the stand-up ep that he'd be better off dead. something about the fact that the narrative decided he was right. something about the fact that he was loved enough from his introduction to keep coming back, but not loved enough to be made plot important. not loved enough to be saved. Hermie the Unworthy, everyone.
