Explosion Season

We don’t talk enough about fixed stars in astrology. Which is fine, but it’s kind of a pity because they’ve been deeply important in the past and also one of them might be about to explode. 

It’s difficult to say exactly what Betelgeuse going supernova could mean because it’s not something astrologers have ever had to think about before. We have seen supernovas before during the history of astrology. Maybe as many as a dozen. They’ve sometimes been called “guest stars” because usually, the stars have been faint and unknown before they explode. Betelgeuse is not unknown. It’s the 7th brightest star in the night sky. We have thousands of years of studying it and usually, we’ve associated it with militarism and mind. It’s forms the sword-arm of Orion. Without it, most people would struggle to recognise one of the most recognisable constellations.

What’s Happening

In 2019 something inside Betelgeuse exploded spectacularly, pushing out a cloud of stellar material big enough to make several moons out of. The cloud of debris happened to shoot towards us, and this means that from our point of view, Betelgeuse dimmed as the material formed a cloud over it. This lasted through 2020 and 2021, but in 2023 the star unexpectedly got 50% brighter and seems to have lost 15% of its mass.

Why this is, is hard to say. It’s an old star and most astromoners believe it will explode within the next million years. Though since its recent weirdness some are now preducting a supernova within ten to a hundred years.

If it explodes it won’t harm us, but it will light up the sky like a full moon and last for months. Astronomically it would present a once in a civilisation chance to watch a supernova at close range. Astrologically, it’s unprecedented. But looking at what’s happened during the recent explosion gives us some hints.

Betelgeuse is at Gemini 28°45 and there are certainly dramatic conjunctions around the early 2020s. Lets look at what they mean:

Betelguese Conjunctions

Boris Johnson has the Sun at Gemini 28°27 and Venus at 28°45. The explosion at Betelgeuse coincided with him becoming Prime Minister and, via a very good general election result and a very bad national crisis, gaining remarkable levels of power. It’s worth noting that we’ve had two prime ministers since he lost power in 2022. Betelgeuse is unstable, and has been seen that way even when it was stable.

If you have something at 28 degrees of Gemini, lucky you! But don’t rely on sustained luck.

Betelgeuse Sextiles

Based on the storming of the winter palace, the USSR had the Moon at Leo 28°38 while Ukraine has Venus at Leo 28°09. During the Betelgeuse explosion and cloud, Russia invaded Ukraine. At stake for Russia is a sense of self - it saw, or has been encouraged for political reasons to see, Ukraine as Russian and as people who would accept them as liberators. A key weapon in the fight back for Ukraine has been international opinion. There’s been an outpouring of love for Ukraine and an ostracism of Russia.

Sextiles with an unstable Betelgeuse seem to be pretty fortunate if you use them right. It certainly encourages action. But if you’re going to use a Betelgeuse sextile, a phrase that keeps coming to mind is “Begin war but do not sow or undertake any good.” Betelgeuse's instability is an inconsistent friend. Don’t rely on it. 

Betelgeuse Squares

Dylan Mulvany has Mars at 28°28 Virgo and ran head first into vociferous anti-trans hate campaign after producing an instagram video advertising beer while transgender. Kid Rock was highly involved in starting the boycott and he has Pluto in Virgo 29°38. This happened in April, where Betelgeuse had returned to a “normal” level of brightness from our point of view. It was only by June that we’d realise that April was not the end of the dimming event, but just a continuation of it before we saw Betelgeuse at its new level of brightness. 

Betelgeuse Trines

The Fall of Kabul in 2021 began with a major assault by Taliban forces on 1 May with Jupiter at Aquarius 28°25. Jupiter went into retrograde and was at Aquarius 27°48 for the Taliban retaking the city on 15 August. It’s worth noting that the Taliban’s national rule has an ascendant in Leo 28°52 so the Taliban took Kabul with Jupiter Sextile their ascendant. Reading up on this, the ascendant sextile makes sense. The Taliban used disinformation and the low morale of government troops to take down the former government.

Betelgeuse Opposition

Prince Harry has Neptune in Sagittarius 28°39, King Charles has Jupiter in Sagittarius 29°53 and Prince William has his ascendant in Sagittarius 28°25. All these are in opposition to Betelgeuse. What we’ve seen in this period is Harry fleeing the country and criticising his family based on his opposition to their white supremacist ideals (Neptune), Charles’ plan to shrink the royal family and focus power on his immediate family has been impacted by a feud with his younger Sun and he’s been forced to shrink it down more than he’d like (very bad Jupiter vibes) and William has borne the brunt of accusations of racism and illicit affairs, which is rather Ascendant how you’re viewed stuff. 

Again, the big energy Betelgeuse gives us is conflict and PR. A Betelgeuse opposition is worth checking closely. I don’t do synastry usually. But Betelgeuse seems to force it. If Betelgeuse is unstable it’s a challenging time for conflict with others who have a similar aspect to it.

So

Betelgeuse's current instability seems to have exacerbated conflicts, particularly where there’s synastry that involves it. Looking at these and other examples I have to note a prominence of Venus - which makes sense because we’re dealing with conflicts where ideals and communicating ideals seems to be key. The other thing that’s coming up a lot is inconjuncts. I haven’t used them here but there are a lot of them. 

Betelgeuse explosion energy seems to have been giving intense and sometimes unexpected conflict, and often these are conflicts were nobody is quite sure what’s happening - the issue is incompatible energy, confusion, and lack of clarity. It’s so strange that we would be facing intense issues of confusion at a time where we have more information than ever. But maybe that’s part of the reason that our conflicts are PR based.

Betelgeuse used to have a 500 day brightness cycle. I suspect all seasons and cycles over there are broken now but the star might still reach an equilibrium now the dust has quite literally settled. There may be other events like this. We may even get to see The Big One - a supernova as bright as the full moon and a light show that lasts for months. I think we can take the 2019-2023 period as a bit of a rehearsal for future. This is going to be part of the astrological weather for a while, even if it’s too weird for us to properly get our heads around it.

New And Improved

After a 9-month hiatus, I chose today - with a Full Moon in Capricorn - to return to the gym. I began weight training in 2016 and it changed my life. Weight training expands all of your bodies - mental, emotional and spiritual - not just the physical one. But certain struggles I was going thru in 2019 made going to train feel more like a burden. Those struggles, and others afterwards, began to override my weight training story, till it almost disintegrated. But today, I put the pen back in MY hand, and today the narrative changes.

And that is the gift of today's Full Moon at 21° Capricorn: putting the control back into your hands. It will require you to rise above your excuses and circumstances, and find a way to honor your story. The story that my friend and colleague Christopher Witecki calls "the story you were born to live."

Much of what is required today will be your mind working in concert with your feelings. Mercury (the mind) squared Chiron early in the night (while many of you were asleep), and will sextile Uranus later in the evening. Venus in Gemini (more mind stuff) will trine Saturn in Aquarius at 24°, reminding you that it's good to value Self enough that you will discipline it when ego gets in the way.

And it's a day of addressing fears that "this time" it will fail like other times, as Black Moon Lilith moves to 10° Cancer. At this place she may whisper in your ear, "you know what happened the last time you tried that, it didn't work then either." Don't let her messages of fear keep you from manifesting a new narrative, and reframing your story.

In 2017 I was deadlifting 155 lbs., squatting 120 lbs. and bench pressing 77 lbs. I think it's not only time to get back to that place, but now to surpass it. Time to reclaim the story, but this time new and improved.

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes

Are you all conspiring to make a mockery of this week’s theme? Gemini? Your song only seems to have a pretentious title. “Outdoors at 7pm, Sunny Main Street”. I can’t tell you who the artist is but it’s from the Wii U’s version of “Super Smash Brothers”. The idea of cute little family-friendly characters in big-time beat-em-up gaming just says what we need to know about you. This week keep up your long-running streak of NOT kicking a puppy. 

Cancer Moon-Child 

Ok, now this is just annoying. Never mind that you’ve gotten “At This Moment”, originally by Billy Vera and the Beaters in 1986… but it’s a cover from 2009 by, of all people… Michael Bublé. Look, sure, he’s a great performer - pulling in full shows over and over again. But, look. Singers typically don’t have a successful career with albums 75% filled with covers. Unless your family name is “Yankovic”, just try to be original in your thinking.  

Leo 

OK, well… This is just getting sad. You don’t need to know what your song is, just that the band in question is called “Panic! at the Disco”. Well, it USED to be a quartet in 2004. Then they fired and replaced the bassist, then two left and were replaced, and finally it became, basically, a solo act - which will end its run at the end of March. This week stop being a prima donna.

Virgo 

(*SIGH!*) AnOtHeR CoVeR. You know what? Fine! The song is “Don’t Pull Your Love”, originally sung in 1971 by “Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds”, yes that’s the group’s real name. But your version came out in 2019 by voice actor extraordinaire Rob Paulsen. This week if your plans to take over the world fail, just remember - Rob had nothing to do with it going south! Take responsibility for your own failures.

Libra ()

You’re all gunna kill me. FINE! Libra - you get the original Broadway Cast recording from the musical, “In The Heights”. We’re going to assume you only speak English for a minute. If you listen to Latin American families yelling back and forth at each other, you’ll notice that they effortlessly slip between English and Spanish, and you will never lose one iota of context. This week start learning languages that sound angry; like German… or Klingon…  

Scorpio ()

Just… What the hell is with all these covers?! You’ve got the 2000 release of “Big in Japan” by Embraced. Yes, you will recognize the song and the melody and the lyrics, but… (*Pause*)  Be ready to gargle a lot of warm salty water to heal your throat after singing along with this version. This week, put Epsom Salt on your grocery list.

WELL, now! We finally get away from all these cover songs and get to an original song for a change! The song is 2013’s, “From The Future, Next Tuesday”. Which is obviously a tongue in cheek reference to the U.S.S. Enterprise-B’s launching in “Star Trek Generations” when everything was going to be installed “Tuesday”. The band for this one is… (*Beat Pause*) OH COME THE HELL ON!! “The Shake-Ups In Ponyville”?! This is My Little Pony Fan Music?! You know what? I give up! Congratulations, Sagittarius! Hey guys this will be a short post because full moon in Gemini will be in about 3 hours or so, check your region and timezone ok? As of now the full moon in Gemini asks us to be a lot more honest and open about ourselves, on taking a look at ourselves and what we truly want, at the soul level. You know, those kinds of stuff that we tend to shove down the drain or sweep under the rug because we had no idea how to deal with them. Since full moons are also a time for release, it's also a great time to release old habits, karmic entanglements, toxic relationships, etc. and purge as much as possible, especially things in line with our communication styles, or how we do about our businesses and networkings (Gemini rules communications, business dealings, and other Hermes stuff lol) which are not in alignment with our soul purpose aka everything that sucks the life out of us. 2020 is gonna be even more intense so it's best to simplify by choosing the most efficient path we can have. Remember that working smart is never equal to working hard, unless what you're working hard for is something you're deeply passionate about. Then go for it, I support you! 😉

The next few parts are a bit of my personal ranting so you can end reading everything here. 😁

I plan to do that path with best efficiency with greater intent since apparently, I am (un)fortunately kissed by Saturn's harsh life lessons (based on numerology of my name, I forgot how it works but you can find how to do it for your own name if you use a search engine). So... to keep that short, one of my life lessons is to plow through life mastering everything at a slow, steady pace, no short-cuts, eventually finding fame and fortune and the respect of many at an old age.

But that's just the point. I don't want that crap. I mean, yeah I do know how it feels to learn things at a slow pace, I mean, I'm an effing slow-learner for pete's sake, it takes a long time for me to learn what others would simply learn in just one sitting, one lesson, one hour, one day. I have to learn shit a bit more than 21 days of continuous activity just to even master the basics. It's hard to drill things into my head, though a bit easier through my body. But still takes time though. Not exactly fun when it's in 3d. And seriously, this whole Saturn thing has been putting me on the edge of my rope and sanity. My breaking point is about 3 cm away. Maybe less.

Call me impatient but right now I have nothing and feel nothing, my energy's pretty much nada. I feel a deep disconnection and a strong sense of loneliness. I don't want to feel bitter when I get even older, just because I spent so many years on experiencing hardships. Even right now, I am in a state of limbo, and frankly it takes a lot from me. It drains what little happiness I have. I mean, right now I am at my lowest, and I feel that no matter how much I do stuff, even the stuff I just love doing, in the end I feel so bitter because I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's very, very painful. Everything starts making absolutely no sense. Again.

Of course, I'm not entirely sure if because it's the full moon, or I'm on my period, or because my gene key shadow (Gene Key 20 lol) has been acting up, or because I have been purging karma and these are just crap I need to release, honestly I have no idea at this point. I wanna have a pity party for myself and the demons shadows that live in my head but also I don't want to because why waste a ton of time feeling sucky when I could just have a good cry, calm down, then go binge-watching anime or something.

Oh, screw it, I'l do some KY and if I still wanna have a pity party then a pity party I shall have. I mean, I do advocate embracing out shadow selves so this might be it I dunno. I might make an update once I've dealt with this matter at hand.

Oh, wait, scratch that, they actually loved it that I even posted about them here. They're slowly dispersing now. Holy crap was that fast. 😮 well, like I said, embracing our shadow parts is an important part of our life journey, and I just felt that again. I'm 50% ok now.

At least I feel a bit energized to do some KY so I hope I feel better by tomorrow.

this is our last full moon of the year! the major astrological influences we’ll be dealing with during this phase is the triple conjunction involving venus, saturn, and pluto in capricorn. we may find it harder to express our emotions and feelings, while it seems easier (maybe even safer?) to be cold and distant. relationships may experience some turbulence during this cycle: separation, distance, or an emotional disconnect may lead to feelings of guilt, fear, jealousy, and even possessiveness. this full moon is shedding a light on all of our insecurities and our sense of self-worth. as intimidating as that may sound, addressing these and committing to taking action (walking the walk!) is necessary in order to restore a sense of balance and harmony as we approach the eclipse and the new year! we are being encouraged to either fix what’s broken in our lives, or to let it go for good, as change is an almost tangible force at this time. on a more mundane level, don’t be surprised if you experience mental fogginess, being scattered-brained, having an inability to focus, or even issues surrounding driving and travel.

**Precautions**

1. You do need to have a bit of game

While Aries energy is straightforward - the degree at which this full moon is happening & the fact that Pluto is a participant in this full moon - we would need to find a few manoeuvres to gain advantage. Little bit of game, little bit of politics or indirect way is required. Mercury our mind is in strategic sign of Scorpio so it will come easy - especially as it makes a positive aspect with Saturn on 14 Oct. So while you are a boxer in the ring - overwhelming power, survival of the fittest, primal sheer raw will power & physical effort are important BUT tactics are required else you would be punched out fast. Quickly access your options, think on your feet, take indirect approach where you need to - every fight isn’t worth fighting, manoeuvre where needed - don’t exhaust yourself. Mercury will go retrograde from 31 Oct & we might need to go over what we are doing right now - once more in Nov - another going over the strategy/ tactical plan.

2. DO NOT exhaust yourself

Aries energy sizzles & fizzles fast too - we put our all in a moment & exhaust all our faculties - take your power sips in between the punches, take breaks - lone time. Hydrate hydrate hydrate - I can’t emphasise enough - you will be migraine/ headache prone if you don’t. Take proactive magnesium if you take it for migraines. This is a hot & dry full moon. Adrenals get stressed if we are not mindful that we are running our energy to ground - Pluto just went direct - you would need SLEEP! Period - it’s a must no matter how amped up you feel. You would be facing a lot of truths right now - you will heal better if you are relaxed well slept & you might need more sleep on few days due to Pluto being strong this month & early Nov.

3. Precaution in driving

Overall hurry, fast actions even rash actions would be seen - you want to be careful especially next few days & then again around 5th Nov when Mars gets involved & I expect more global aggression & physical actions.

4. Yes People will have temper flying, impulses, rash actions

You can call it people acting up or you can understand that everyone is trying to claim their personal power & we are all learning how preserve sanity in our relationships while having this awakening. We don’t want to be less anymore, hold back, just make nice - but at the same time - we are test driving our new self identity first time in partnerships. There are bound to be teething fights & ego struggles. This will go on till early Nov.

Expect acceleration of conflicts, war like energy, military actions getting aggressive especially going into November. Fall or rise of leaders with more information coming to light, war peace decisions, provoked actions, high adrenal overall. But same time this can be channeled into innovation, getting tough tasks done, discovery & initiative in world conflicts. We do need to channel the physical energy collectively in a productive fashion.

**History**

I don’t know personal chart of y’all but looking back at dates or weeks when this same point in our chart was activated gives us a good idea on how we might personally receive this full moon.

While this full moon might be a completion of task or project that’s unique, exciting, Pioneering act, against norm or society or traditionalists - initiated possibly in April 2019. But a Long term theme might be at play. I will suggest you to take a look at events of October 2015 - specifically 12/13 October 2015 - did you start anything new, did you start something for another - to make someone else happy, or start a new partnership/ contract / relationship phase. You would possibly see completion / conclusion of that, result of that - more importantly you would see shift in roles in that equation now. So say you got into a partnership at that time, now you might go solo; started a job & now you might go independent start your own thing; there is a reversal of roles.

Helios’ Astrological Angle for the Full Moon in Sagittarius– Right, so fair warning: This one is going to have some tough truths and not all of you are going to be receptive to them. I know this, and have to say them anyway, because it’s the essence of what is going on in the skies above and you all need to know to act (or not act) accordingly. After a solid week of dealing with hate from a viral tweet where I vaguely bashed Virgos while also giving them a serious promotion (yes, Virgos, there are benefits included) I can take the flak I’m going to get for this. So let’s dive right into this one, shall we?

The Sun & Moon, and Pluto– First things first, this is a story of an ending- It’s also the end of your story, if you’ll forgive the turn of phrase. Whatever house this Lunation falls in for you (25 Sag), you need to end something that fits in that theme. Now I’m not going to break it down by every house, a quick glance at your chart and the keywords they represent should give you the insight you need here- plus it is more than likely the thing that is stressing you out and that you’re losing sleep over. Now, let’s be real- no one LIKES endings. Endings hurt, and they represent the finality of a situation, one way or another- And what hurts the most is that some characters in the drama don’t make it all the way to the end as they should. You need to figure out a way to be positive, upbeat, and shake off the darkness of your mind. I write this in full knowledge of the horrors my own mind tortures me with on a daily basis and know how hypocritical it sounds, believe me- but it doesn’t change the fact that we need to do this. It requires all the bravery we can muster. We found our truths in the Cardinal Crisis and watched the world change in unbelievable ways- for good and ill. Neptune and Chiron in Pisces have wrung you out leaving you feeling like there is nothing left of you, and now the stars and I are asking for even more, more than those asked for combined. We need to be brave, bold, and strong, and we need to do it together. You have to start telling a new story about yourself, write a new narrative where you are the hero you dream of being, the hero the world needs. Your words have power, and you need to use this power to lift yourself up so that you can inspire others to do the same. It is not selfish to make yourself a priority. scandalous beauty: hazel scott - an analysis

The fact that this woman is forgotten is pathetic. She is the classy black lady from the ‘50s simultaneously playing two pianos that you now see on the internet. Alicia Keys would pay tribute to her as she hosted 2019 Grammys, and also performed on two pianos simultaneously while the crowd sat there in indifference. However, 60 years ago, this lady inspired anything but indifference. That lady, Hazel Scott, may have been Adam Clayton Powell’s wife but she was a bonafide star in her own right. Scott was a born improviser, driven to break the rules. A child prodigy, she was playing the piano by the age of 2 and by age 8, she was enrolled in Julliard, (where the admission age was officially 16). At 15, she performed with Count Basie and toured with her mother’s all-female orchestra. There was something thrilling and subversive in Scott’s hybrid art, and to the audiences and critics of the time, it seemed clearly rooted in her race and gender. Duke Ellington was a fan. Sinatra was too. In 1950, she became the first black woman to host her own television show. She played Carnegie Hall, was an outspoken civil rights advocate, and her hands were insured by Lloyds of London. With her poise, beauty and curvaceous physique, Hollywood came calling. Scott had it written in her Columbia Pictures contract that she would not play traditional subservient roles, and also demanded full control of her wardrobe. She also called out the virulent racism that went on in America. For that type of spunk and self-respect, she got blacklisted. She went to Europe and enjoyed a little of the fame she had, but changing times meant that her salad days were coming to an end. The erasure of Hazel Scott’s name from the jazz catalogue is appalling, and a damning indictment of how black artists were treated in ’50s America. Hopefully, in some small way with this analysis, I’ll be able to do justice to the great injustice done to her and make sure her name and accomplishments are remembered.

Hazel Scott, according to astrotheme, was a Gemini sun and Aries moon (the moon is speculative). She was born Hazel Dorothy Scott, in Port of Spain, Trinidad. She was the only child of R. Thomas Scott, a West African scholar from Liverpool, England, and Alma Long Scott, a classically trained pianist, and music teacher. In 1924, the family moved from Trinidad to the United States and settled in Harlem, New York City. Her father soon left the family and her mother raised Hazel as a single parent. Her mother dreamed of musical stardom, but she recognized her daughter’s natural gift for playing the piano and moved her attentions from developing her own career to nurturing Hazel’s talent. Alma set her daughter up for an audition at the Juilliard School. Minimum entry age was 16, but Alma insisted they let Hazel audition. The young pianist marched in, and a virtuosic Rachmaninov Prelude flowed from her fingertips. One of the judges labelled her a ‘genius’, and she was granted a scholarship on the spot. Professor Paul Wagner accepted her as his own student. By the age of 16, Hazel Scott regularly performed for radio programs for the Mutual Broadcasting System, gaining a reputation as the "hot classicist", who mixed jazz and classical music. She became known for her skills in improvisation and ‘jazzing up the classics’ – playing Bach, Mozart and Liszt sped-up and syncopated. Soon, she started playing nightclubs, and she headlined at New York’s Café Society, the first proper nightclub in America. Café Society was one of first integrated clubs, and it featured the best talent of the day – from Miles Davis to Nat King Cole. Scott soloed at Carnegie Hall, and in 1940 – at just 20 years old – she released her debut album, Swinging the Classics, to rave reviews. She bcame a superstar overnight, and she she soon had a chauffeur and had her hands insured by Lloyds of London. By 1945, Scott was earning $75,000 (over $1m in today’s money) a year.

Aged 22, Hazel Scott made her debut in a New York musical. And Hollywood came calling. Until then, Afro-Caribbean actresses in Hollywood had nearly always been cast as prostitutes, slaves and maids. But Hazel had it written into her film contracts that she would not play any demeaning, subservient roles. In fact, she had it written that she would only play herself, Hazel Scott. Hollywood said yes. Hazel featured in five Hollywood films, notably I Dood It (1943), Broadway Rhythm (1944) and Rhapsody in Blue (1945) and would become one of the highest paid African American entertainers in the country. She was also the first person of African descent to have their own television show in America, The Hazel Scott Show, which premiered on the DuMont Television Network on July 3, 1950. Soon her personal life would heat up as well. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was a Baptist minister, and New York City’s first black councilman – and he was already married. But he and Scott hit it off like a shot, and they began a secret affair. Powell divorced his wife, and married Hazel five days later. Their marriage was controversial; their fame astronomical. Everyone was fascinated with the couple, and photographers followed them everywhere. In the late ‘40s and 50s, Powell and Scott were one of the most famous black couples in America. The couple became parents to their only son, Adam Clayton Powell III. In Powell’s eyes, Scott was now a mother, and he requested she stop performing in nightclubs. While he was away in Washington on business, she performed concert dates across the US. In, 1950 right-wing journal Red Channels put out a list of actors, musicians and others in entertainment industry suspected of being Communist sympathizers. Fearful, Hazel volunteered to testify before the House Un-American Activities. She denied being a communist, but strongly criticized the blacklisting process in a blistering speech. Hazel’s speech made the headlines. Her television variety program, The Hazel Scott Show, was cancelled a week after Scott appeared before HUAC. Her concert bookings took a nosedive. Around the same time, Scott’s marriage to Powell was falling apart. Scott suffered a nervous breakdown in 1951.

In 1957, Hazel fled America and moved to Paris with her son, and she and her husband divorced. He later married his secretary. She had a second wind in Europe, where Hazel’s music was popular again.In 1963 she marched with other African American expatriates – including James Baldwin – to the US Embassy in Paris to protest racial injustice and support Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington (where he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech). In 1967, Hazel decided to return to America and settle. By this time, the Civil Rights Movement had led to new legislation ending racial segregation and protecting black citizens. Scott went back to playing in New York nightclubs. But by then, rock n’ roll was the new jazz, and jazz artists in the US were struggling. In 1981, Hazel Scott died of cancer. She was 61 years old.

Next, I’ll focus on another classical actor you never head of. He was arguably the first major black star of the stage: Leo Ira Aldridge.

She liked to travel, to be up-to-the-minute, on the move and on her toes. Twenty-four-hour rolling news and current-affairs programs were dreamed up for and by the likes of her. With her quick intelligence and enthusiasm she made a vivid speaker and inspiring teacher, though she got impatient with those less nimble-witted than herself. She had the gifts of a formidable lawyer, a natural writer, broadcaster, politician or debater. In short, this is an ideal combination for any job where you have to think on your feet.

Nonetheless she was probably at her best when she developed an area of expertise in which was an authority, for she needed to be her own person, to be able to say what she thought and not pull her punches. Her eternal youth, explosive energy and exuberance was the envy of many. When it came to putting over her ideas on something in which she believed, her power-assisted words hit the world like sustained gunfire. Yet for all her quickness, curiosity and with-it, streetwise dexterity, she had about her a certain naive, bright freshness and spontaneity, which no amount of negative experience could dull. She said what you saw, heard and thought, though seldom what she felt, for feelings were not your strong suit. Although she ‘felt strongly’, even passionately, about things, she did not empathize well with other people. She considered their problems and pains to be something they needed to sort out themselves, unless she happened to share their problems, in which case she soon mounted a one-woman crusade with the assistance of her clear, incisive wit, passionate rhetoric and scathing indignation. Her forthright, pugnacious approach and strongly held views made her a formidable adversary but can also make her, to her indignant surprise, some bitter enemies. Yet at the end of the day she could shrug this off with a witticism, for often humour and a good belly laugh were her best medicine.

She had a very good memory and found it easy to learn subjects that interested her. She was very kind and thoughtful towards others. Her imagination was very keen, but if it got carried away, she may have experienced irrational fears. Even though she may have tried to maintain a scientific and objective outlook, her mind was actually dominated by her emotions. She was very perceptive, intuitive and compassionate. If she felt threatened or challenged, she tended to withdraw and say little. However, if she was further provoked, she had plenty to say. She had a boost of self-confidence and faith in herself and what she could accomplish. She used every opportunity she could to show others what she could do. She expected a lot from those who are close to her, but she gave a lot too if she felt they were loyal. Emotionally, she was quite serious, and her close relationships may lack some warmth and humour. This can be partly attributed to the fact that she felt a strongly developed sense of responsibility and duty in everything she did. She found herself drawn to people who were responsible and self-sufficient, although she liked to believe that they depended on him for stability and security. She held high standards and had a tendency to be critical, which meant that she could act act quite severely towards subordinates. Her standards may have been so high that nothing ever seemed good enough, leaving her dissatisfied with both herself and life in general.

She belonged to a generation gifted with original and unusual artistic talents, highly imaginative, secretive and visionary. She personified the Piscean Uranus generation in the sense that she felt uncomfortable facing reality, finding the world a difficult place to survive in. Confident and opinionated, she was fond of declarative statements such as “I will do this” or “It’s this way.” When out of control—usually because she was bored, or hadn’t been acknowledged—she was bossy, demanding, and even tyrannical. But at her best, her confidence and vision inspired others to conquer new territory in the world, in society, and in themselves. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, classical and jazz musician Hazel Scott became one of America's premier pianists of her time. Born on June 11, 1920, this child prodigy first started tickling the ivories at age 3 under the guidance of her mother. She moved with her family to the U.S. in 1924 where she started performing in New York City and receiving scholarships to study classical music at the Juilliard School of Music -- all of this by age 8. Her mentors in jazz technique were Art Tatum and Teddy Wilson. Topping her talents off with a warm singing voice to complement her glamorous presence, she was a club and radio star by the late 30s and performed with such notables as Count Basie. She gained some attention for her swinging versions of classical themes. Hazel appeared in the productions "Singing Out the News" and "Priorities of 1942" on Broadway and played twice at Carnegie Hall. As a sometime actress, Hazel became a noted specialty performer in musical motion pictures, including "Something to Shout About" (1943), "I Dood It" (1943) and "Broadway Rhythm" (1944) during the war-era while releasing dozens of albums during her prime. Her most famous hit was "Tico Tico" and her catchy boogie-woogie style proved quite popular during the 40s, while her versatility and ability to shift from jazz to classical to blues was incomparable. Hazel married the Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., noted Congressman, preacher and editor in 1945. She became the first black woman to host her own television show in 1950 but, within months, the show was canceled. An outspoken personality all her life, she was subsequently accused of being a Communist sympathizer. She refused to perform in segregated theaters and became a vocal critic of both McCarthyism and racial injustice. Following her divorce from Powell, she lived in Paris where she performed and enjoyed racial freedom during the 1960s. Her return to the U.S. marked a second career on TV with guest parts on such shows as Julia (1968) and The Bold Ones: The New Doctors (1969) coming her way. Scott continued to perform in clubs until her death from cancer in 1981. (x)
