wanna ask how you feel about the eridan bpd headcanon/theory(?? not sure what to call it!) you're so good at your character analysis and i'd love to see your outlook on it
Since I don't have a degree or any formal training in psychology, I feel deeply uncomfortable diagnosing characters. I've made an autism joke before but only because I'm on the spectrum. He's definitely traumatized and anxious, but I mean those as descriptors of his behavior rather than capital-D Diagnoses. I try to focus on those when I can - the cause and effect of cognition, self-image, and behavior - and those factors may very well match up with DSM criteria, but I try not to touch an actual diagnosis with a ten foot pole unless the author has explicitly stated that X character has Y condition.
#there's a variety of reasons for this#part of it is that im GROSSLY unqualified to be handing out diagnoses when it takes a full on PhD to do that in real life#part of it is that psychology is inchoate and we are still very much in murky waters#for example: complex ptsd isn't even IN the DSM yet#and iirc my therapist told me it was because theyre still figuring out how to classify it (attachment disorder? trauma disorder? etc.)#part of it is that (from my limited and undereducated understanding) there are diagnoses that you can assign by completing a checklist...#but some that require a hell of a lot more testing and ruling out other potential causes#and the cluster-b personalities are (IIRC) not even ones you're supposed to diagnose minors with#bc of fears of self fulfilling prophecy and because minors in general are still developing personalities In General#and like the fact that i can't say that with authority speaks to how unqualified i am to do any diagnosing right? hahaha#and part of it is just because like#unless the story is specifically About That and the author has stated so explicitly#i think diagnosing characters tends to put blinders on analysis#like if i were to seriously go 'eridan is autistic' then it would massively bias my reading and understanding of his character#and we have 0 indication that eridan was ever explicitly intended to be autistic or that the author was trying to do an autism specifically#that doesn't mean that the reading is invalid because like thats what death of the author means#all readings are technically valid including stuff the author didn't necessarily intend#but that's just not the way i like to engage with media and not the way i like to approach character analysis#because PERSONALLY it just feels kind of reductive - but also -#i'd wager MOST of us don't have degrees in psychology#so when i say 'X character has Y condition' it might mean something totally different to somebody reading my analysis#even people who have Y condition aren't exempt because a lot of mental illnesses differ from person to person#whereas if i explain “X character has Y thoughts and Z behaviors” there's no ambiguity in that#eridan struggles with noticing that people are suffering and with realizing that he should care#at least part of this is due to his horrific murder-filled upbringing which rendered empathy a detriment & so he learned to ignore it#it could be autism - but it could also be trauma -#or he might just be Like That without actually meeting the diagnostic criteria for autism#& you can't even technically be diagnosed with C-PTSD#or maybe he has a burgeoning personality disorder but you aren't supposed to DX those too early anyway#or maybe hes just 13. see what i mean hahaha. ive reached the 30 tag limit

Do you have any art advice? Like how didn't you get discouraged until you became this good? Because every time I try I am discouraged because I can't move the image in my head into the real world.
this isnt just for drawing but really any artistic endeavor but you need to be aware of your own skill set. this isnt a place for "my work is garbage" or any of those negative thoughts, you should try without judgement to sit down and see where you're at. and from there you choose one single thing, nothing too big or broad of an idea, to work on differently in your next piece. "i want to draw faces better" is really broad and vague, but "i like how this other artist does eyebrows" for example gives you a pretty set idea to work towards. and once you've found a way to do that one thing in a way u like you can move on to the next thing. and it might seem like its going to take forever to do it that way but once you start its not that bad.
this is going to be disappointing but i also think of what i want to do in my own art style. i havent had the feeling in years of being unable to pull something off because i know what my skill set is and i think in those terms. i work with them not around them. and even then i dont think too concrete i leave room for error and possibly even taking a different direction half way through. if any thing the original idea is a suggestion.
another note you need to learn how to use references. everyone loves to say to use references & never says how to actually do that. using references isn't just copying what you see. using references is looking at objects and colors in relation to each other & how they interact. if u can look at a shirt someones wearing & paint all the wrinkles while looking at it thats great. but really using your references is noticing where that shirt is catching on the person's body to cause those wrinkles. its looking at something in a certain lighting and seeing how the light scatters on it and what other colors are nearby to affect that. especially with shiny things like metals so much of the "shading" in metals is actually reflection of whats around it so copying 1:1 from a reference you find online or take yourself might still not look right in your art. likewise with how light scatters in liquids & gem stones. it's going to depend on what environment its in so copying a reference exactly is only going to get you so far. the more attention you pay to what's going on in your references the more you can play around & still get good results & depending on your memory you might not even need to use them as much as you might think.
as for how i dont get discouraged my love for my subject matter far outweighs however i feel about the end results of whatever i do. i mess up a lot and things look bad & wonky a lot. even more so if im desperate for a good result & trying to rush it. all my best art comes from when i sit down & forget time exists. BUT!!! but!! even when u do things in a way u dont like don't just put yourself down and give up. you can criticize yourself but ONLY if its something that will help you. "my art is garbage" doesnt help anything & is blatantly untrue. "this doesnt look good because i put the eyes too far apart" constructive, direct, that's something you can keep in mind for next time and it WILL lead to improvement if you do. you also don't need to ever actually say that out loud or on your posts if you post your art. there are a lot of things you'll notice about your own art because you're the one who did it and you know you could've done it better or differently. your audience is not going to pick up on it 9/10 times and anyone who's going to harass you about your art not being perfect is not worth your time or energy. and of course don't forget to reward yourself. it can't all be things you need to improve on. don't forget to pick out parts you DO like how u did. something you think is cute or pretty or cool or had a nice angle. no matter how small it is. if you start putting weight/importance on things u liked doing or think turned out well instead of dwelling on everything that went wrong it Will get more fun & rewarding.
#asks#auxe4#i hope this doesnt come across as condescending im not trying to be#im not an art expert its just a hobby#i personally think art should be fun so if its feeling like a chore dont be afraid to play around with less mainstream ways of doing things#i fucking HATE line art. i get so caught up on making it perfect and clean it ends up taking HOURS & feels like i have nothing to show for#all that time i spent.#but thats just the thing! u dont need line art! nothing wrong with coloring a sketch instead!#i personally dont consider my art a 'full piece' unless its lineless art bc thats when i get to go all out on the rendering.#the lines from the sketch are just a suggestion & i can decide in the moment what needs shadow & what needs light & in what direction#overall a much better & fun experience for me. but its also not for everyone its just my example#also even if ur goal is fan art perhaps messing with geometric or abstract art could be fun for u#im not u i wouldnt know. but theres no need to limit urself to the style of things u see get popular#there arent really rules in art beyond have fun with it#SOOO many people love to be like 'never do this with ur art' and its something many people do well#'never shade with black' absolutely not a rule. u can do it. in fact there are multiple ways to make it extremely cool & impactful#i dont do it bc i like saturated colors. but thats a personal choice#art is a very personal thing and only u will know whats right for u & that takes experimenting to do

Hobbies
Paring: Max Verstappen x reader Summary: Max gets bord while on race breaks, and decides to pick up new hobbies. Some are better than others
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’d been dating Max for almost a year now, and it had been great. From lazy morning sleep-ins to late-night dinner dates, you loved all of it. But your favorite parts of the year weren’t the planned outings or romantic getaways. They were the random little things Max did.
Take last week, for example. You’d come home from a long day at work, carrying a bag of McDonald's. You knew Max wasn’t supposed to be eating that kind of food because of his diet.
Not that either of you cared, as long as his nutritionist didn’t find out. It had become a quiet, monthly tradition between the two of you. But when you walked through the door expecting to see your boyfriend, you were instead greeted by a massive toy car racetrack taking over the living room. Max was sitting in the middle of it, commentating like it was the next Formula 1 Grand Prix.
“Who’s winning?” you asked, like it was the most normal thing in the world. And for the two of you, it was. These little moments were some of your most treasured memories. No matter how long you’d been together, you were always discovering these small, weird, wonderful things about each other.
You were used to coming home and finding Max mid-obsession. There was the week he became addicted to building flat packs. You gained three shelves, a chest of drawers, and six bookshelves from that phase. All of which remained mostly empty since neither of you owned enough stuff to fill them.
But this week had taken a turn you never expected.
With a rare week off from racing, Max had decided to try his hand at crocheting. He was not as good as he thought.
The first thing he made was supposed to be a blanket. And, to be fair, it looked like a blanket. If that blanket had been through fifty years of wear and tear. Still, you didn’t say a word. You just smiled and congratulated him because of the way he looked at you. Like a kid proudly showing off a school project. Someone else could break the news to him. Not you.
Today, though, had rendered you completely speechless.
You walked in, once again holding a bag of greasy food you had both been craving. Max met you at the door with his hands out, and you passed the bag to him without a thought. You kicked off your shoes and removed your jacket. But when you walked into the living room, you stopped.
The couch. It was rainbow. A couch cover, clearly crocheted, had been draped over the whole thing like a technicolor explosion.
“You’re insane,” you whispered, staring directly at it.
Max glanced at you, then back at the couch. “I prefer creative, but whatever works for you.”
He sat down proudly on the rainbow monstrosity, patting the spot next to him and placing the bag of food on the coffee table. You shook your head but joined him anyway.
Immediately, he pulled you into his side. Your body fit against his perfectly. A familiar comfort settled between you without needing a single word. A random movie played in the background as you took your first bite of food.
“You really need a new hobby,” you mumbled through a mouthful of burger.
Max nodded slowly, his eyes full of amusement. “Yeah. I’m thinking ceramics.” He looked down at you with a soft smile. His eyes were filled with nothing but love. <3

You've talked before about how "generic" ttrpg systems still contain hidden assumptions about genre, story, playstyle, etc. (e.g. gurps and military scifi/fantasy) how do you figure out what those assumptions are? what should you look for in the rules to find them?
That's a fairly involved question for which a full answer is beyond the scope of a Tumblr post (even my notoriously long-winded ones!), but I find that a good place to start is with the "who gives a shit?" principle.
For example, suppose that the first piece of mechanically significant information on a game's character sheet is a statistic called "Strength", rated on a scale from one to ten.
Who gives a shit?
That is, why do we care how strong player characters are? Why do we care about having a definite, codified answer at our fingertips to the question of which characters are stronger than other characters, to a fair degree of precision? Why does any of this matter? What assumptions are we making about the nature of the conflicts that will be present within the game's narrative?
That's a fairly trivial case, but the principle can be extended to more fundamental features of a game's rules. Let's consider the classic Dungeons & Dragons style skill check, for example: roll a die, add a stat, compare to a target number, pass or fail. What assumptions are we encoding about the nature of conflict in this game?
Well, for a start, these assumptions might include:
The assumption that generating binary pass/fail outcomes for performing discrete physical, mental and social tasks is how most conflicts will be resolved;
The assumption that your game will benefit from these outcomes having a high degree of player-facing uncertainty;
The assumption that your game will benefit from this uncertainty containing a relatively high likelihood of complete failure;
The assumption that your game will benefit from the principal determinant of that likelihood of failure being some intrinsic and objectively measurable attribute of the acting character;
... and so forth.
If you're only familiar with Dungeons & Dragons and its very close imitators, these may seem like things you have to assume in order to have a functioning game, but there are a fairly specific set of conventions being expressed here. Why do we care about any of these things? Who gives a shit?
Even the first bullet point can easily be knocked down: one can imagine, for example, a game which simply assumes players can always choose to have their characters succeed at anything it's within the realm of possibility for them to do, and whose rules instead focus on providing a codified game-mechanical answer to the question of what that success will cost them, with the only uncertainty being whether the player is willing to pay that cost.
It's clear that a game which approaches conflict resolution in this way is expressing a strong set of genre assumptions. The trick is recognising that the industry-standard alternative (i.e., the D&D-style skill check) is equally laser-focused on a specific set of genre assumptions, in a way that's often rendered invisible by how common it is.
All of which is a very long-winded way of saying there isn't a simple checklist you can go down to identify a game's genre assumptions. But then, I warned you way up in the opening sentence that this would be the case – I hope I've at least given you a place to start!
