Personal pet peeve of mine: When the characters are supposed to be 12-14 and the guys are all a head taller than the girls. Like, no, that is literally the only age range when girls are taller on average than boys, because most girls have a bulk of their growth spurt behind them and boys are yet to start theirs. And as much as I like the future badass trope, when the future badass is a tiny 14/15yo in the present and she's towering over everyone else in the future, it's just not believable. If a girl is tiny at 15, she's probably going to stay tiny for the rest of her life.

there are many things alix e. harrow did amazingly in 'the once and future witches', but one that really stuck with me is the sisterhood dimension of the book. the fact that the whole story revolves around sisters who were lost to one another but find themselves and rebuild their relationship? the fact that this is essential to overcoming the obstacles that lead to the climax? the fact that sisterhood is extented not only to the three blood sisters, but to all the willing women in New Salem, the fact that the story, that witchcraft is inexorably about women helping each other because sisterhood means survival, means power?

so i'm reading the once and future witches by alix e. harrow and one of the three main characters, beatrice, is sapphic (i think specifically a lesbian) which i knew going in, but i think her sister juniper is also queer because at one point she thinks "she'd never had any interest in boys or betrothal or the things that came after" which to me reads as either aroace or a lesbian (we shall see if this is elaborated on, i'm only a few chapters in) and anyway that's a pleasant surprise because i knew that one of the three main characters was queer but now it seems like two are
