I am once again linking to the Galactic Style Guide, which has amazing articles on all types of clothing in Star Wars. It's intended for cosplayers but it's been extremely helpful for me when drawing characters in civilian clothes, and might be useful for writers, too, if you need to describe particular outfits.

I’m sure I’ve posted this before but I can’t find it- this site is a really good resource for designing canon accurate outfits!

I found a Neopets internal style guide from 2005.
Tumblr media
I was originally gonna make a post complaining about how inconsistent and lacking the species model sheets were (which is pretty on-brand, all things considered), but then I glanced at the grundo model sheet and
Tumblr media
... ????
An important reference, apparently.
They couldn't bother to give any do's and don'ts, proper turn-arounds or even just stick to one style in their own style guide, but they thought it was absolutely imperative that their artists were given an illustrated diagram of exactly how a grundo puffs that galactic ganja.
OK.

ATTENTION STAR WARS FIC/ART CREATORS!!! INSANLEY DETAILED WARDROBE/PROP-DETAIL MEGA-DATABASE!!!
Tumblr media
Found this site when I was researching footwear specifically and looking to see if zippers were a thing in star wars and stumbled upon this GOLD MINE (Galactic Style Guide tab I'm specifically raving over)!
Theres an insane amount of wardrobe (beyond clothes, including bags and tech etc!) detalil including context as to who would wear what and why etc! Thoght those who find it overwhelming (like me) to comb trhough every movie or show/novel/comic themselves to find the authentic or consistent detail patterns in-universe might benefit from this!
Still checking out the non-wardrobe tabs but thers ALOT so huge shoutout to the creators making updates even to this day!
So check it out SW creators!!!!

Do you have a favorite reference/visual guide in the Star Wars fandom? If so, why is it your favorite and are there any info bits you enjoy reading?
Far and away the best guide book that Star Wars put out was Star Wars Propaganda: A History of Persuasive Art in the Galaxy.
Tumblr media
Before I read this book, I don't know that I was that excited for it, but I found it thoroughly fascinating to read because it was such a great idea and it was pulled off beautifully--it's an in-world book of essays about the history of the galaxy and the use of art used to sway both sides of the various conflicts. So it tells the history of the galaxy, from the prequels to the sequels, through characters within the universe, while also being halfway a poster book of really fantastic political-style art pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite was the Republic vs Separatists sections (I am a prequels bitch after all) but the Empire vs Rebellion art pieces and the commentary and history that went with them were fantastic. This is one of the few books I recommend in physical form if you can afford it at all, because the pieces look nice in digital form (I have both), but a little photoshoppy to my eye. But holding this book in my hands I could see it was very much designed to be a print book, they look so much better there. You can see some more examples of the posters here or, if you want to know just how much I loved this book and some examples of why it hit me so hard, I have an essay here that explains more about what it's like. My other favorite guides are two other in-universe books: - Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious has great art, great in-world character notes, great tidbits about the worldbuilding, and even our only glimpse at a possible IN UNIVERSE CALENDAR SYSTEM - Star Wars Galactic Maps: An Illustrated Atlas of the Star Wars Universe has great art, fun in-world character notes, and is just really, really fun look at what a guidebook from inside the GFFA would look like.

Someone has done D20 Starstruck fan art for the Galactic Girl Guides in the style of Phineas and Ferb’s Fireside Girls Troop right?
So I don’t have to do this? I’m not the only one who heard Stacks and immediately thought of this?

Friends at the Table season breakdown
Friends at the Table is an actual-play podcast focused on critical worldbuilding, smart characterization, and fun interaction between friends.
But this post is for anyone who's ever thought, "What is Friends at the Table actually about?" Well, it's about a lot of different things, depending on the season.
Seasons of Hieron -- Autumn in Hieron (S1), Winter in Hieron (S3), Spring in Hieron (S5)
Using DungeonWorld as its main system, this is closest to DND style high fantasy with adventurers of different races who come together to go on quests
What starts as a series of fetch quests escalates until the dead don’t stay dead, the nature of existence is brought into question, and the world itself is in danger of dying.
Follow a team of morally ambiguous adventurers as they fuck around only to find out!
Starring: an evil woman with an eviler sword, an orc who shows us why true neutral is in fact the evilest possible alignment, a snake oil salesman, a paladin who accidentally serves three different gods, and more!
Counter/Weight (S2)
Giant robot season #1
Cyberpunk/space opera/mecha anime
It’s the Cold War in space. Two long time enemies, Liberal Democracy Land and Corporation Land, recently banded together to stop the Empire of Fish Aliens.
Now, our story is set in space Berlin, on a planet divided between the two reluctant allies
Follow a parking robot, an exiled fish alien, a hacker, and a former pop idol as they try to survive as mercenaries and fight off giant robots with their own giant robots.
Marielda (S2.5?)
Steampunk heist season
A mini-season, set in the ancient past of Hieron, but it works as a standalone.
A group of criminals rob God. This sets them off on a dangerous path that will determine the fate of all of Hieron.
A story about the power of information and the power of access to information. Featuring trains, azaleas, ghosts, divorce, and clarinets.
Twilight Mirage (S4)
Giant robot season #2!
(The giant robot seasons are set in the same universe but several thousand years apart. They're loosely connected but can be enjoyed separately.)
The contemplative, wondering nature of Studio Ghibli films meets the teeming space opera of Star Wars
The Divine Fleet is a great utopia that has lasted thousands of years, powered by their machine gods. But one-by-one, these machines are dying off. Can two teams of specialized government agents save their gods and their way of life? And if they can't, how will all the people of the Divine Fleet find a new way forward?
Featuring the greatest Friends at the Table character of all time: fat, purple-furred, bisexual catgirl in sexy lingerie who rides a motorbike, runs a speakeasy, and can alter reality with her mind
Partizan (S6) (And Palisade, its sequel, is S8)
Giant robot season #3
Twilight Mirage is set explicitly in a utopia. Partizan is set explicitly in the middle of an exploitative empire. The guiding question here is: How do you even begin to imagine the possibility that such an empire could fall?
At the center of a galactic empire made up of rival states, we follow two groups: a mercenary squad that specializes in theft and sabotage, and a group of criminals under the control of a young and spoilt noble. But everyone has their own agenda, and as the empire hurtles towards civil war, who will get what they so desperately want? And who will lose it all?
Also, of course, they are in giant robots
Sangfielle (S7)
Horror fantasy
Sangfielle is a land of sprawling plains crisscrossed by semi-sentient malevolent trains. Strange things from the past or future come out of the mines, old and new gods alike appear in unexpected places, and you are always at risk of losing your life, your freedom, or simply your self
Nature vs. technology horror where both nature and technology can be equally horrifying!!
Characters include: a grotesque eyeball that possesses people but only consensually, a giant goat person whose life's purpose is to kill trains, and a junk mage who keeps taking things he shouldn't
Bluff City (Bonus season)
What if Atlantic City was Even Weirder
A series of one or two shots that are loosely linked by their location and come together to tell the story of the city. Each story uses a different system and so each one has a slightly different feel.
The paranormal, the surreal, the gritty, the desperate, and the outrageous rub shoulders in Bluff City, in stories featuring superheroes, ghost hunters, murder mysteries, and a priceless one-of-a-kind bird.
Things that the show is always about, no matter the season:
Religion — Always. From DND-style gods to robot gods to Catholic God to weird old gods you dig up from the mines, there are lots of gods and lots of people worshipping gods in different ways.
Labor issues and political issues surrounding control, propaganda, surveillance.
Weird body stuff/weird identity stuff — clones, consciousness transferred into different bodies, robots that influence your thoughts, robots that bond to your body, being seven thousand bees in a trench coat, etc
Having fun with different ttrpg systems! They use a lot of different systems on the podcast
Aesthetics, just like generally, and especially fashion. Action stops for twenty minutes while everyone goes around and describes what their character is wearing in exact detail. It’s fantastic.
Fun, silly, or unique names, ranging from "Lazer Ted" to "they marked scars of light in pitch; born in fiercest purpose, and beheld as the signet sealed upon our pact"
Critical worldbuilding, smart characterization, and fun interaction between friends!

A quick guide to Holotempus HQ, the Holostars EN Brotubers of Hololive Production
Take note that I wrote this before Vanguard’s debut so its only about HQ
What can they offer as a group?
Guild Lore - They are the strongest and more enticing to the viewers when they are complete together. In the lore, their adventure guild reside in a digital world called “Utopia”. Most of their viewers like their concept because of “Nostalgia” they give off similar to playing online RPG with friends during school days or typical adventure shounen anime consist of 4 male main characters back then. (Saiyuki, Hunter x Hunter) Its hard to tell if they are a hero guild or villain guild but Yagoo the CEO mentioned he want a group of bad boys concept for Holostars before Holotempus debut. This 4 belonged in Headquarters (HQ) while the new guys is called Vanguard (VG). HQ is is located in Elysium, Utopia and VG is in Xenokuni.
Comedy Skits - They are great actors for comedy skits and skilled in improvisation. Ideas for skits is usually Magni’s strength but Vesper, Axel and Altare can bounce well with others too. (Judge Magni, Psychic Therapy, Wheel of Fortune, TTRPG DND, Rock)
4 Players Gameplay - They love playing adventure games to explore together while having a chat about most random things and competitive FPS games that test their teamwork. They used to play together daily or weekly during their earlier days after debut but now they are busy for their solo content. (Raft, Zomboid, Left 4 Dead, Apex, Deep Rock Galactic)
Great conversationalists - Their conversation was natural and flow so well that gives the vibe as if you’re listening to a real group of friends. Vesper has interview series where he ask questions to get to know them, Magni’s unarchived off-collab Karaoke and Axel’s izakaya stream(with Vesper & Magni) are the best example of that.
Camaraderie - They are surprisingly really close as a group. They support each other and love hanging out together. They are probably the first batch of Holopro vtubers where its a must to do “Raid”(Raiding is a new Youtube function where you can send your viewers to other streamers before you end your stream.) each other and if they can, its very rare for them to overlap each other solo stream. In Pre-Debut, they actually divided each other stream schedule based on Dayparting like Magni covers the Prime Time and Vesper covers the Morning time so their fans can catch up at least one of them depend on what time they are available. If you check their Tier Membership, they also have same prices. They confirmed they discussed it together. Another story is they all want a heart pose for Holopro fest poster but got rejected by the management.

1. Regis Altare (Blue)  “The masses chose not to act. So I’ll take a stand in their stead.” Lore: The founder of adventurer Guild Tempus. The first hero adventurer in Elysium. He’s straightforward and popular among peers.  Guild Position: Leader, the mediator and representative of the group. Fighting Style: DPS swordsman/warrior/shooter/mage, All rounder As Streamer: The most strict when it comes to his chat rules and a reformed toxic gamer. He’s their best gamer so its easy for him to familiarize himself with new games he consume. He’s usually a chill streamer but he also has demon king persona where he unleash his toxic side and can be scary when he’s angry. He’s still young but he’s trying his best as Tempus leader. As Gamer: Mainstream games, FPS (Apex, Valorant), MMORPG (FF14, Monster Hunter), Horror games (Phasmophobia, Mortuary Assistant), Action games(Cyberpunk 2077), VR games(Cooking simulator, Fishing) - His strength is FPS but he want to try different type of games too like Roguelike games.  Specialty: Plays Guitar & Cello (Trying to learn Songwriting), ASMR (Comfy/Light Romantic Boyfriend Experience), EN Karaoke (Sad boy songs), Love Challenging himself by putting punishment as consequence in his stream (Home Sweet Home, CSGO with Vesper)
Tumblr media
2. Magni Dezmond (Purple) “Alchemists have the wonderful ability to grant people’s wishes!” Lore: The self-proclaimed alchemist with a business mindset who sells potion (Copium). He has a darkness within him and willing to do anything to uncover truths. Guild Position: Public Relations, the collab focus guy Fighting Style: DPS and support mage As Streamer: Their explicitly unhinged overconfident competitive toxic gamer but very good at executing his creative ideas. He’s good at multitasking and producing creative output quickly. He’s talented but also very skilled from working hard. Notorious for his cursed stream where he make abomination creatures like Magmo. He might be blunt and sharp with his words but he has a soft side and actually a textbook tsundere. He’s also good at socializing and interacting with different types of people. He’s Altare’s right hand man and genuinely love supporting each Tempus members as long as he can.  As Gamer: Childhood chill games with Iconic characters (Sonic, Super Mario, Spongebob Squarepants), Competitive shooter games (Overwatch, Apex, Fortnite), Open world adventure games (Subnautica, Minecraft, Animal Crossing) - He refuse to play MMORPG because he might destroy his life for it and he’s not good with Horror games like Axel. Specialty: DJ with Loop station (Can play guitar, electronic keyboard), Art Stream (Commission Open), Comedy skit stream (Weremag, Judge Magni), Collab stream (Off-Collab Karaoke with Holotempus members), Roleplay and Creative Storytelling (Alchemist Prologue Lore in his membership)
Tumblr media
3. Axel Syrios (Orange) “Doctors resolve the root cause of a problem, right? Well, I destroy it. So I am a doctor.” Lore: The gladiator and owns a combat arena. He’s a blockhead who joined the guild out of whim. He love eating. Guild Position: Former Treasurer, Human Resources  Fighting Style: Tank, DPS Brawler, Bard As Streamer: The luckiest member with spicy mouth and has street smart wisdom who appreciate Ecchi na Neesan from a distance. Notorious for killing his vods so I suggest to watch him live instead. Probably the most normal among the 4 of them. A very hilarious optimistic guy that must be protected at all cost. He’s unfiltered and usually curse a lot but he actually means well and very friendly. His fans find his head empty moment funny and cute. His strength is producing Cover songs and organizing Collab songs.  As Gamer: Visual Novel (DDLC, Your Turn to Die), JRPG (Zelda, Nier Replicant, Final Fantasy), Shooting games (Hitman, Apex) - He’s a big fan of Final Fantasy but sadly he can’t play it on stream bc he can’t get the perms. He don’t like Horror games. Specialty: Bilingual (JP & EN), Cover songs, Collab songs project (Bad End Night, Yatta), JP Karaoke, ASMR (The funny Kusogaki type ASMR), Sharp at figuring out things based on his observation/Perceptive (Weremag, DDLC), Love giving life advises (Love Consultation, Just Chatting)
Tumblr media
4. Vesper Noir (Black) “It’s his childish nature that allows him to speak so freely about his dreams. He might even actually let everyone around him dream.” Lore: The resident scholar of grand library. Rational most of the time but can be harsh in his criticism. Don’t like sunlight because of spending too much time in his research. He can’t neither confirm nor deny the vampire allegations. Guild Position: Academic Advisor, Support  Fighting Style: Swordsman (Rapier), Control Effects and Healer-type Mage, All rounder? (Spear user, Berserker?)  As Streamer: The crazy grandpa/uncle-like comfy storyteller with strong viewers engagement. An average guy who’s full of contradictions. Flawed and can be toxic gamer when he’s excited. He will say the most unhinged surprising things you will not expected. Extremely introverted with social anxiety so he’s more comfortable in doing solo stream. He's trying to be an endurance streamer but usually busy because of his off-stream workload.  As Gamer: Turn-based strategy roguelike games (Hitman, FTL, Dicey Dungeon, Solasta), Click-based MMORPG (Diablo II, World of Warcraft), Exploration (Outer Wilds, Zomboid), Building games (Minecraft, Factorio) - Bad at multiplayer competitive games (Pummel & Mario Party) and hand-eye coordination games like FPS.  Specialty: Just Chatting streams (Holotempus King of Zatsudan), Learning (JP Study stream & Membership art stream), Experienced TTRPG Dungeon Master (DND), ASMR (Comfy Soft Speaking Storytelling and Sound focus without whispering or romantic sexual content), Review stream (Bike, PC build, Tea, Dad Jokes, Art), Finishing a game in one sitting (Soma, River City Girls, Fall Out New Vegas)
If you’re a fan of classic anime(weeb): Vesper, Axel If you’re a normie and familiar with mainstream anime: Altare, Magni  If you like ASMR: Altare(most experienced), Axel, Vesper(still learning) If you like music: Altare(EN sad boy songs), Axel(JP songs), Magni(DJ) If you want a chill stream as background: Vesper, Altare If you want to be entertain and laugh: Axel, Magni If you’re into FPS gameplay: Altare, Magni, Axel If you’re young(early 20s and down): Altare, Axel If you’re older(late 20s and up): Magni, Vesper If you’re fine with dark humor and flawed individuals: Magni, Vesper If you only want positive vibe: Altare, Axel If you want to be ignored or be scolded(but they actually like you): Magni, Vesper, Axel? If you want affectionate treatment: Axel, Altare If you want wise average guys vibe: Axel, Vesper If you want smarter chill vibe: Magni, Altare
DUO DYNAMIC
Shiny & Spicy (Altare & Axel) - the youngest pair, chuunibyou duo, the responsible child and the kusogaki. Among the members, Axel is the only member that can’t be control by Altare(Minecraft). Maybe bc Axel is the type who do whatever he want but Axel respect Altare as their leader. In return, Altare see Axel as his rival in singing. They might be kusogaki at times but they can also be the responsible independent children. They are very close friends and both entered a competitive Apex tourney together.
Kintama Bros (Axel & Magni) - hilariously chaotic combined, both of them have spicy mouth. The smart and dumb. The positive guy and the negative guy? Basically Naruto and Sasuke. Older and younger brother? bc Magni mentioned Axel felt like a younger brother to him.
Father & Son (Axel & Vesper) - just cute platonic relationship between Nowa Oji and his kusogaki son Axel. Vesper wish Axel will not experience the bad things he experienced as adult and be happy. Axel’s anime taste is heavily influenced by his parents so he can relate strongly with Vesper despite their age gap. As for Axel, he like trying out Vesper’s style in streaming such as doing frequent Just Chatting stream and playing the same games bc “Like father, like son”.(Hitman, Needy Girl Overdose)
Amugni/DezPerados/MagNoir? (Vesper & Magni) - they don’t really have official name yet. The flawed and oldest pair. Hubris and dumb together. They are the Max Intelligence duo they said. Nerd?? Meme lords and love media references. The villain/betrayer and his accomplice dynamic? Despite how careful Magni is interacting with Vesper in public, they are actually very close and Vesper appreciate how considerate Magni is as friend. They really like each other as friends.
Prison Break/Almond/Amodo? (Altare & Magni) - started with Way Out stream. Lately, they look like a shipping pair and not a duo. Fans said Almond is their ship name but Altare used that a lot to refer to their duo so I’m not sure if he’s only selling their pair as ship or duo. Openly flirts with each other. Altare usually played the bad guy in their dynamic. In their off-collab, Magni was asking for help and implied he’s Altare’s hostage. Altare also love teasing Magni while Magni played the tsundere role in the dynamic. Magni viewed Altare like a younger brother that he found stupid and someone he should look after.
Short & Tall? (Altare & Vesper) - don’t have official name again. They are oshi of each other. In the lore, they studied in the same mage academy together with Magni but reunited when Altare is looking for guild members(Debut Manga). Their names are inspired from Star-crossed Lovers of Tanabata Festival (Altair & Vega). Their dynamic during stream is more like the responsible child and flawed father or the leader and his henchman something like that?? They like praising each other.

My first fic, Across the Universe, is rough when it comes to writing style, but actually past River was hilarious. I entirely forgot about this passage
The Mediocre Pub, formerly known as The Best Pub in the Galaxy, was the brainchild of three Zymurgists, coincidentally named Zed, Fred and Ted. Zymology, that is the study of fermentation, is the most popular major at the University of Maximegalon. 65% of first-year students declare it as their major. Typically, the vast majority of students change their major after a semester when they realize it is markedly more entertaining to drink beer than it is to study it. Zed, Ted and Fred, on the other appendage, were not going to let a little fun get in the way of their studies. Even if they found themselves slightly less popular at parties than marketing majors. As it happens, partygoers were not particularly enthralled by their lectures on the hint of elderberry in their fermented beverage of choice. Not to be dissuaded, the "Eds", as they became known, decided the problem was the parties to which they were not being invited, and the attractive members of their preferred species who were decidedly ignoring them. After a night of drinking a particular potent fermented beverage with hints of chocolate, oats and a small insect like creature that inhabits the fetid swamps of Sqornshellous Zeta, they came up with a plan. They decided to create the perfect pub. A pub so amazing that the partygoers, including attractive members of their preferred species, would flock to them. They set to work studying every aspect of successful pubs. Every single item was based on their extensive studies, and every beer was individually cultivated to appeal to only the most sophisticated palate. They humbly named their joint venture The Best Pub in the Galaxy. Unfortunately for them, it was a resounding failure. The Guide described the interior as "a mish mash of random elements that entirely fail to come together." The menu had "all of the readability and excitement of an instruction manual for a midsized vehicle." Finally, the drink list was described as: "ranging from undrinkable to almost surely toxic to most species. The best option tastes a bit like water used to cook Zontarian sausages poured over the anus of a Turiquan Three-Headed Uberbeast." The only positives cited were the location, situated along several major routes between large galactic hubs, and the bartender Tritus, who "will slip you a couple of generic brews for a fiver." The Eds had a massive falling out, blaming one another for the pub's failure. They refused to be in the same room and would send messages through Tritus, who very quickly tired of being the go-between for all of their petty squabbles. Finally, he went to each Ed and told him: "Whew! Those other two sure do hate me. Can you imagine if I was an owner? That would sure piss them off." Zed, Ted and Fred immediately signed their shares over to Tritus. He changed the name to The Mediocre Pub, disposed of the inventory, and redecorated. The result is a quiet, popular pub that always has just enough of a crowd to feel warm and inviting, but not so many patrons that you can't get a drink. Tritus still mans the bar. As it happens, the Eds never spoke with one another again, and thus never discovered his subterfuge. Zed used all of his experience doing market research to get a job in the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. He liked it slightly less than zymology, but it got him more invitations to parties, so he considered it a win (at least until the revolution came). Ted became an apprentice at a zeptobrewery where they brew beer by the sip. You must have a masters or higher in zymology to enter. Sadly, he was diagnosed with a chronic case of Pretentiousness and forced into early retirement. Fred was killed by a Turquian Three-Headed Uberbeast.

Welcome to SoulBlast Official! We finally have a tumblr account!
We don’t aim to fully replicate the deltarune style, as we have some unique approaches. These include; extended chapters, original characters, a new take on how dark worlds function, and a lot of motifs from outside sources such as Terraria and the Kirby Franchise. Light worlds and Dark worlds are now named the Solscape and the Equiscape, hosting Solstials and Equixars. Dark Fountains are now spatial rifts you must absorb. There’s a lot of concepts in the project based on space, whether it’s character’s based on space related terms or areas having a galactic vibe.

As for the cast, some of the swaps are:
Spamton (Xero) - Kris (Distyne)
Jevil (Ataraxial, nicknamed Atarax) - Susie (Ciskar)
Gnite (An original character based on Frisk) > Ralsei (Name Unrevealed)
Queen (Zenith) - Noelle (Aurelia)
Rouxls (Cosmar) - Berdly (Voltaon)
Swatch - Asriel
Swatch > Toriel
Chara > Lancer
Mettaton (Mettacomet) - Angel
___________________
As for a couple Questions we’ve been asked before…
Q: Does Kris talk in this AU?
A: Yes
Q: What type of Puppet is Kris?
A: Kris and the other secret bosses don’t follow the freedom trope.
Q: What’s Xero’s personality like?
A: He’s a bit silly but takes his job quite seriously. He doesn’t know much about his origin. More can be found in Xero’s recipe guide in the server’s writing channel (in the “all revealed information” category)
Q: What is the new name for the Fun Gang?
A: Originally we had some names like the “Shadow saviors” and all but they were a bit basic and the whole joke regarding the team name is likely to be replaced
Q: Does Xero talk?
A: Yes, not like Spamton in deltarune though.

Finding His Way - Chapter Three
Tumblr media
Summary: Din takes Mariana and the kid shopping. Events ensue.
Helicon was closer to the Galactic Core than Mariana had been before, and Quarra was definitely several steps up from the town where Mando had found her. For one thing, it had a more temperate climate, so there was a lot less dust. After nearly a week aboard the Razor Crest, it felt wonderful to be outside, walking around in the fresh air. The kid seemed to think so, too. His little green head swiveled back and forth in her arms as he took in the storefronts and colorful plants that lined the street. Mariana couldn’t gawk as much as the little one, though, because she had to keep up with Mando. The man was clearly not as interested in sightseeing as his companions were.
“We’ll start here,” he said, opening the door to a textile shop. The kid cooed with delight as they stepped inside. The shop was filled with colorful displays of clothes and fabrics of all kinds. One entire wall was covered with strings of beads, ribbons, braids, and tassels. She tightened her grip on him as he started wiggling to get down.
“Nope, kiddo,” she said. “I know it’s tempting, but those aren’t toys.” He gave her a pouty look and made a “pthft” sound that transcended language. The pouty look intensified when he caught her trailing a hand over a beautiful fuzzy blanket in her favorite shade of teal.
A tiny shop assistant scurried up to them. No more than four feet tall, she was a species Mariana had never seen before, with purple mottled skin, luminous eyes and long, nimble fingers. “How may I help you?” she said with a graceful dip of the head.
“My friend needs new clothes,” Mando said.
“That is abundantly clear,” the shop assistant said, quickly looking Mariana up and down. “Do not take offense. I speak the truth, nothing more. I am Fala. Come.”
Fala gestured for Mariana to follow her toward the back of the shop. “Here we do things right. First, I take measurements, then you choose the styles, then we tailor for you. Delivery by the end of the day.” They reached a counter, where Fala picked up a small device. “Stand on the square. Best give the child to your friend, we do not want to measure it, too. Unless the child needs clothing as well?”
“No,” said Mando, taking the kid. “He does not.”
Fala shrugged and started ordering Mariana around again. “Stand up straight. Now turn to the right. Lift the arms….” The little shop assistant scanned her a million different ways, the device sending out a series of trills and beeps as it recorded her measurements. In less than a minute, they were done.
“And now, you choose.” Dropping the scanner back on the counter, Fala placed one long fingered hand on Mariana’s back and guided her smoothly toward a seemingly endless rack of women’s clothes.
“Oh, I … I just need the basics,” Mariana stammered. “A pair of pants, a shirt, some underwear …nothing fancy. Whatever’s cheapest will be fine.”
Fala scoffed. “Never choose clothing by cost,” she said. “Even those who are frugal can be stylish.” She rummaged through the rack, pulling out several pairs of trousers, then a selection of shirts and tunics.
“No, no, really, something like what I’ve already got, just without the holes,” Mariana insisted. Everything Fala had pulled out looked far too expensive. She already felt guilty enough about making Mando waste time and money on her when all the really needed was to restock the galley and find a decent data pad so she could start researching.
Fala shrugged again. “Customer is always right,” she said. “Will you pick up or do you need delivery?”
Gah-aaah! Mariana whirled around at the sound of the kid’s angry squeal. He was straining in Mando’s arms, trying to reach the display of beads. He was still adorable, but It looked like he was working up to a proper tantrum.
“Here,” Mando said, shifting the kid away from the beads and toward Mariana. “Why don’t you take him outside while I pay?”
Mariana practically lunged forward to take him. “Good idea. We’ll meet you outside.” She snuggled the baby close and hurried toward the door. Being waited on had made her very uncomfortable, and she couldn’t wait to get out of the shop. She heard the soft rumble of Mando’s voice and the higher-pitched chatter of Fala fade away behind her as she reached the door.
The kid was not happy, squirming in her arms and mumbling away, clearly demanding to go back inside and play with the shiny beads. “That stuff was too posh for us,” she told him, jiggling him up and down to distract him. He snuffled at her, unconvinced. “If you’re good, and don’t act up while we finish the shopping, I’ll ask Daddy if we can stop at that toy shop down the road before we go back to the ship.” She pointed a few doors down, where brightly colored puppets and balls spilled out of a sidewalk bin. The kid cocked his head, intrigued.
“Yeah, toys! After we find me a new pair of boots, and get some food, and a data pad and some parts Daddy needs for the ship, we’ll pick you out something really nice. Something safer than those bits of metal you keep finding.”
She was so focused on brightening the kid’s mood that she never noticed the guy leaning against the doorway to the next shop whispering into a handheld communicator.
*****************
They bought a pair of sturdy and hardly-worn boots to replace Mariana’s tattered shoes, then stocked up on food, including some fresh vegetables that had Mariana daydreaming about the dinner she was going to fix that night. Something other than veg-meat and insta-bread for a change! Their final stop was an electronics depot where Mando would pick up some spare parts for the ship and she hoped to pick out an inexpensive data pad.
She was alternately thinking of baked root casserole and what specs to look for in a data pad when she walked straight into Mando’s back. The kid squawked at her as he got smashed against the backplate of the Mandalorian’s armor.
“Get back,” Mando said gruffly. He whipped his rifle off his back in one smooth movement, crouching slightly. It took her a moment to realize what was going on. They were in the passageway between two buildings and three armed men blocked the path in front of them. A noise behind her alerted Mariana to two more behind them. None of them was as heavily armored as Mando, but they were tough looking nonetheless.
“You’re on quite a spending spree, Mando,” the tallest one said. “Must have a good chunk of credits in your purse. More than enough to share.”
Mando said nothing, just calmly surveyed the five men. “Stay back,” he told
Mariana quietly. She couldn’t have moved if she wanted to; the sight of all those blasters and rifles had her frozen in place.
“Don’t be stupid, Mando,” the bandit said. “We’ve got two guns on the woman and two on the kid. You’ve got all that shiny armor but I don’t see any on them. Just hand over the cash and no one gets hurt. Try anything and they die. Got it?”
“Got it,” Mando said. He started to reach for the money pouch he kept on his belt. Mariana couldn’t breathe. The kid struggled in her arms, trying to see what was going on, but she turned his face toward her chest and whispered “No, baby, just stay quiet. Please.” There was nowhere to hide, but that was all she wanted to do.
Suddenly, all hell broke loose. Mando whirled around, blasting two of the bandits with his rifle and round kicking another in the head. A fourth went down with a blow from the butt of the rifle and the fifth got off a single shot, which went wild as Mando punched him in the face. The man dropped with a wail, clutching a broken jaw. It was all over in less than a minute.
“Come on,” Mando said, stepping over the fallen men as if they were nothing more than litter in the street. “The depot closes soon.”
The kid gabbled something, pointing his finger at the men as if scolding them. Then he laughed. Mando was already several yards away, and Mariana had to practically run to catch up to him.
“Are … are they dead?” she managed to say once she was able to swallow again.
“No. I don’t kill unless I have to. They were just trying to rob us. I eliminated the threat and we’ll be long gone before they think to try anything else.”
How could he just walk on as if nothing had happened? He’d taken out five men without drawing a deep breath; she knew Mandalorians were highly trained soldiers, but what kind of training created a killing machine like that? Maybe she’d been naive to trust him so easily, just because of the kid.
“Shouldn’t we report this to the authorities?”
“No.”
She hugged the kid tighter. This was not okay. She concentrated on breathing in and out, but her mind was racing.
“What if they report it?” Oh, stars, what if they got arrested? She had no identification, she could end up back on the auction block, what would happen to the baby … She was starting to shake as her breath stuttered and she nearly dropped the kid. He cocked his head at her and gently reached out to pat her face.
“They won’t,” Mando said calmly, still walking as if nothing was wrong. “There’s no reason for one man to attack five unless he was provoked, so they’d be admitting their own guilt if they did. Besides, I doubt they want it known that all five of them got their asses kicked by one guy. They won’t tell a soul.”
Mariana calmed down a little bit at these words, but she still felt a panic attack lurking deep within her. All she wanted was to get back to the ship, hide in her bunk and sort this all out. Why hadn’t she insisted on getting a signed contract stipulating exactly how long she’d have to work for the Mandalorian to pay off her debt? How long was she going to be stuck with him? Was this really better than being a slave?
They reached the electronics depot, but Mariana couldn’t concentrate on the selection of data pads. She was too busy trying to calculate the going rate for child care in this sector, and how much room and board on a gun ship was per night. Throw in the cost of the clothing (thank the stars she’d insisted on just the basics!) and she might just have her debt worked off in six months. A year at the most. She could handle that, right?
Mando finally gave up asking her opinion and chose a data pad himself, then haggled over the parts he needed. Mariana absentmindedly played with the kid, who was thrilled to be surrounded by so many shiny and sharp objects. When the transaction was done, she numbly followed Mando back toward the shopping street they’d started on. In just a few minutes they were back in front of the textile shop.
“It’s getting late,” Mando said. He dug a handful of credits out of his pouch. “Why don’t you take the kid to choose a couple of toys before the toy shop closes? I’ll pick up the stuff here and we can get back to the ship before it gets dark.”
She nodded, taking the credits. She’d completely forgotten about buying toys, but somehow he hadn’t. The kid started wiggling and cooing as they approached the toy shop, and she finally put him down so he could race inside.
The shopkeeper was a grandmotherly looking woman whose face lit up as the child toddled inside. “Well, look at you! Aren’t you just the cutest thing ever?” She looked up at Mariana. “Shopping or just browsing?”
“Shopping,” Mariana replied. It was easier to breathe in here, surrounded by jumping jacks and stuffed tauntauns and rubber balls. It didn’t take long for the kid to fall in love with a green ball and a purple stuffed frog. When Mariana asked the price, she realized there was enough left over for a set of wooden building blocks. She didn’t know if the kid liked that sort of thing, but building toys were very educational.
When they emerged from the toy shop, Mando was waiting, a cloth wrapped bundle tucked into the crate from the depot. The kid waved his new frog frantically, desperate for Mando to see it.
“Nice,” he said. “Just don’t eat it, okay, ad’ika?” He turned his helmet toward Mariana. “The food should have been delivered by now. Let’s get back to the ship.”
Her anxiety ramped back up as they got closer to the Razor Crest. She clutched the kid to her, but he was busy bopping the frog on the head with the ball.
A freight droid was waiting next to the ship with their groceries on a mag-lev lift. It beeped cheerily, but Mando wouldn’t let it enter the ship. “No droids,” he said. Mariana took the kid inside while Mando hand carried the packages of food inside. She was still shaking a little, but now that they were back in a familiar location, she felt a bit better. Like it or not, this was the closest thing she had to a home.
******************
Mando hoisted the last parcel of food off the mag-lev and shooed the droid away. The blasted thing beeped a chipper farewell before it rolled off. Now that everything was aboard, he closed the ramp, shutting Quarra behind them.
“You can start unpacking while I prep for launch,” he told Mariana. The kid was happily occupied with his new toys, but she looked a bit pale. She’d seemed shaken ever since the altercation with the bandits and it was probably a good idea to get off planet as quickly as possible.
He climbed the ladder into the cockpit and started his pre-flight checks. It was a comforting ritual, one he could probably do in his sleep. He’d certainly done it under adverse circumstances on many occasions, when getting the Razor Crest in the air was a matter of life or death. He felt his shoulders relax as he ran through the checks; he never felt entirely comfortable outside his ship. It was the only place he could let his guard down.
Once the ship was safely aloft, he went back down to the cargo level. It looked like Mariana had finished putting the food away and was starting on the package from the textile shop.
“Um, Mando,” she said hesitantly.
“Yeah?”
“I think you got the wrong package. This isn’t the stuff I ordered.” She held up a quilted dark blue jacket.
“No, but it’s what I ordered,” he said. She looked at him in confusion. “I asked the sales attendant to add a few things I thought you’d need. And to upgrade things a little.” At the time, it had seemed like a good idea. He understood why Mariana had asked for the bare minimum, but there was no need for it. In a way, she was as much a foundling as the kid was, and it was his duty to make sure she was clothed and fed. Now, though, as Mariana rifled through the package, he wasn’t so sure.
When she reached the fluffy teal blanket at the bottom of the pile, she suddenly burst into tears. Hysterical, messy, heart-rending sobs that left Mando completely at a loss. He’d gladly face a hundred angry mudhorns rather than a single emotional person. This was why he’d frozen so many of his bounties; the ones that begged and blubbered were almost worse than the ones that fought back.
The kid dropped his froggy and toddled over to Mariana, patting at her leg with his tiny hand. He looked up at Mando, eyes pleading for him to make it better. But Mando didn’t know what to do.
“I’m … I’m sorry,” she stammered. “I just … just .. I’m just suffering some … cognitive dissonance here.” She hiccuped and snuffled as her sobs shuddered to a halt.
“I … I don’t understand,” Mando admitted.
She sat down on a crate, the blanket crumpled in her lap. “It’s just … here I was trying to figure out how quickly I could get away from you and you go and do something so sweet …” She shook her head.
“I still don’t understand. I thought things were going well …”
She sighed. “Let me try to explain. It was the fight. It … it brought back some memories I’d prefer to forget about.”
She pulled the kid into her lap and stared down into his eyes for a moment before she began to talk.
“I never told you how I came to be a slave. I was studying to be a scholar. It was the end of term and I was coming home from the Collegium for a visit. Just as the transport arrived in town, the Imperial forces attacked. Supposedly there were some Rebel spies in town, I don’t know what the reasoning was. I got off the transport and there were stormtroopers everywhere. It was chaos. Everybody ran. These people … I don’t know who they were … they grabbed me and a few others and we went into their house and hid in this tiny storage closet at the back. Things were blowing up and people were screaming and … When things finally quieted down and we came out, it was … it was a disaster. I went home and it … just wasn’t there. The door was gone, half the walls were gone, my parents, my aunt, my cousins … they were all gone. I had no idea what to do or where to go and then suddenly, there were more Imperials and they were sweeping up all the survivors. They rounded us up and shoved us into transports and that was it. They sorted everybody out, and took the ones that were useful and the rest of us … they were supposed to ‘dispose’ of us, but the commander had a deal with a Hutt on some backwater planet and he sold us to him.”
“I understand how today’s situation reminded you of that day,” he said carefully. “But I don’t understand the ‘cognitive dissonance’ part.”
She looked up at him, absentmindedly stroking the kid’s ears. “Because today I saw that you were just another faceless, nameless soldier like them, and spent all this time trying to figure out how long it would be until I’ve repaid my debt to you and can get away … and then you did this.” She gestured toward the pile of clothing, which had slid onto the floor. “How … how can the person who took out five armed men without blinking be the same guy who noticed that I like this blanket after I touched it for maybe two seconds? I can’t wrap my head around it.
There was nowhere to sit but Mando couldn’t stay towering over her. He crouched down in front of her and took a deep breath. This wasn’t going to be easy. “First of all,” he said, trying to find the right words that wouldn’t set her off crying again, “I can’t do much about the faceless part.” He gestured awkwardly at his helmet. “But I’m not nameless.” He held out his hand. “Din Djarin.”
She shook his hand and smiled weakly. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Djarin … again.”
“No mister,” he said. “Just Din is fine. And those guys attacked us, remember? You were unarmed; I was just protecting you and the kid. I was doing my job. And by the way, this ,,,” -- he waved his hand at the blanket and the clothes -- “would never have happened before I met him.” He reached out to take the child out of her arms. It was true; before the kid had come into his life, it would never have occurred to him to make any effort beyond what was strictly necessary. And he would never have given out his name so easily. Yes, Cara Dune and Greef Karga knew it now, but only because Moff Gideon had broadcast it to the world. Otherwise, he’d still be anonymous “Mando” to two of his only real allies. Maybe it was true that parenthood changed a person.
“And as for your debt,” he went on, “don’t worry about it. Any time you want to leave, just say the word.”
“Actually,” she said, reaching out to pat the kid on the head, “I think I’ll stay.”
Din was not prepared for how relieved that made him feel. He shoved the feeling aside and stood up. “Well, then, you should probably finish putting these things away,” he said. “I’ll just put away the spare parts and …”
She nodded and stood as well. “Yes, that’s a good idea. And then I’ll fix something fresh for dinner. I hope he likes veggies.” She tweaked the kid’s nose, which made him giggle. Din sighed. At least one of them was good at interacting with others.
**********************
Later that evening, after a good meal that wasn’t reconstituted or rehydrated, Mariana took the kid into her bunk to play while Mando -- no, Din -- ate his dinner. Mealtimes were a part of the daily routine that she’d particularly come to enjoy. At first, she’d felt bad about leaving him alone; he usually kept busy while she and the kid were eating, but sometimes he’d wander into the galley and help feed the child. It felt rude to shut themselves up in the bunk, but she knew it was the only way he’d feel comfortable enough to remove his helmet for more than a few seconds to scarf down some food, which was apparently what he’d been doing ever since taking in the kid. That can’t be healthy, she’d told him, but he’d just shrugged.
Her new clothes were put away on the shelves and in the drawers, and she’d remade the bed with the new bedding. Even the lumpy pillow felt nicer with a fresh pillowcase on it, and she already knew the teal blanket was going to be much warmer than the old one.
“This place is starting to look like a home,” she told the kid, who was unimpressed, being far too busy studying the physical attributes of his new green ball. So far, he’d discovered that it bounced, that it was squishier than the metal knob that had previously been his prized possession, and that despite the tempting color, it was inedible. When he rolled the ball under the bunk and crawled in to get it out, she took the opportunity to change out of her old clothes into the pair of pajamas that the shop attendant had slipped into the order. It felt incredibly good to put on clothes that were not only clean but brand new. She’d washed her clothes as best she could in the ‘fresher sink, but it hadn’t helped much. They might have been clean but they were still frayed and haphazardly stitched, and they’d never been the right size to begin with. She would gladly consign them to the garbage heap the next time they landed.
She sat on the bed and pulled out the data pad. It was an older model, but in excellent condition. Whoever had it before had taken proper care of it. As she familiarized herself with the settings and started connecting to the HoloNet, the kid crawled up beside her. He watched the flashing lights on the keyboard as the pad ran through its start up routine.
“This,” she said, “is a data pad. It’s not a toy, although it is awfully fun to use.” He looked doubtful and tried to touch one of the buttons. “Nope,” she said. “You’ve got your toys, Daddy’s got his ship, and I’ve got this.” She caressed the screen, already dreaming about all the books and holo-docs she’d be able to download as soon as she set up her credentials. The Galactic Archives wasn’t what it once was, back in the glory days of the Old Republic, or even in the days of the New Republic before the rise of the Empire, but it still held a wealth of information that she was dying to get at.
*********************
For once, Din wanted to savor his meal. The vegetable casserole Mariana had fixed wasn’t fancy but it actually had flavor, unlike the crap he’d been eating for who knew how long. For someone who supposedly wasn’t good with things, she was a pretty good cook (although there had already been one incident with a knife that required the med kit). The fresh food wouldn’t last too long, considering the lack of cold storage space, and they would soon be back to premade stuff, but for now, he intended to enjoy it. The kid certainly had, eating nearly twice as much as he usually did, which made Din feel a little guilty.
As good as the meal was, he didn’t linger over it too long. He’d found that if he knocked on the bunk door too quickly, he earned a look that reminded him not to bolt his food, but he still felt uneasy about having his helmet off for any length of time. Even when he’d been alone on the ship, he’d spent most of his time with it on.
He scraped his plate into the tiny trash compactor and then washed up the dishes. Mariana said he didn’t have to, but it only took a few minutes, and she did the bulk of the food preparation so he didn’t mind. When the plates were dried and back in the cupboard, he lifted his helmet off the table and slid it back on. As the locks clicked into place, he walked toward the bunk.
He knocked but she didn’t answer. Usually the door popped open right away and the kid scrambled out. Slightly concerned, Din pressed the keypad to open the door. What he saw inside left him breathless for a moment. Mariana and the kid were curled up on the bed, absorbed in a holo-vid on the data pad screen. She was wearing a pair of pale blue pajamas and her hair was down rather than in the braid or knot she usually kept it in. The Child was snuggled up against her side, and it just looked so domestic and … beautiful. Din was about to back away when she looked up.
“Oh, hi,” she smiled. “We’re just watching a frog vid. Did you know there are over 78 million of them on the ‘Net?”
“I did not,” he chuckled.
“And I have the feeling he’s going to make us watch every single one of them.” She shook her head. “By the way, I’m sorry about that little outburst earlier. I know you aren’t like … them. You’re a good dad, and a good boss … and a good friend. I just have some issues.”
“Don’t we all?” Din said quietly, but she was already distracted by the kid, who was pointing excitedly at the vid screen. He left them to their frog viewing and went back up to the cockpit, to watch the stars stream past.

I’m a hard worldbuilding person so when I’m working on a story the most joy I get isn’t from writing the story but building it which is to the direct detriment of a final product
When working on the Great Galactic Race I constantly have to remind myself that the style guide for ggr is 2005s dr who aka low budget high concept work with what you have and the lint in your pockets
All main characters either Are humans or are human looking because doing makeup takes time and time is money not to mention the cost of vfx, names and characters can’t be too alien because it’s still for a topical audience (vis a vis 2010s emo boy on a luxury resort somewhere out in space), sci-fi and fantasy are two sides of the same technobabble coin when it’s soft sci-fi
Once a day At Least I have to remind myself that the ideal amount of detail I’d put into this world is Telling that it’s deep and expansive and Showing only things that a moderately well off youtuber could make a garage episode out of

a writeblr (re)intro
about me:
nyx, aka anagnorvices
all pronouns (except it/its) but they/them is always a safe bet
previously @aurienyx but i decided to move to a sideblog for convenience's sake
favorite books: little fires everywhere by celeste ng, the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by douglas adams, the weight of our sky by hanna alkaf, and many many more
big fan of found family, ComplicatedTM character dynamics, mythology, futuristic settings, and unnecessary amounts of worldbuilding (affectionate)
what i write:
mostly prose, but i dabble in poetry sometimes
unnecessary amounts of worldbuilding (derogatory)
a lot of fic. like a Lot. probably majority of the content i post will be from my fics but i write original stuff on occasion
loooove fantasy and scifi but i don't actually write a lot of hard scifi, more like fantasy with vaguely scientific magic systems—but i'm gonna change that :) scifi here i comeee
looking to experiment more with different styles (screenplay, transcript, epistolary, etc) and genres—i'm really excited to try my hand at horror/thriller, and currently attempting to forage into the world of mysteries
current wips:
curses and gifts: my firstborn child. first wip and still going strong...ish. the one thing i absolutely want to finish before i die. (kind of on the backburner for now, though.) ft. twins displaced from their home planet, a himbo who is unexpectedly competent in some aspects, and galactic conspiracies galore. excerpt:
"Wonder why Rizeol is out," Jasmin says as Daemis-kasin calls out instructions for the next strengthening exercise. She sucks in a breath before pushing up into the new position easily. "Dunno," I say. "Probably sick, a couple other kids have been out lately too. Didn't Audrie say something about it being the season for it?" Audrie grunts from Jasmin's other side, but I can't tell if it's because he's confirming what I said or if it's just because he fell. "Or," Jasmin says, "maybe that's not it. He lives on campus, Laeline, but I checked his room and everyone said they hadn't seen him in a while. Don't you think something's off here?"
atla murder mystery: what it says on the tin...because titles are a Struggle and they're usually the last step in my writing process, so that's what you get (for now). ft. detective sokka and dual timelines! there'll be a title someday... excerpt:
Ozai Kazuichi. Harsh angled contours, severely drawn eyebrows, piercing gold eyes that, even in death, seem to stare straight through Sokka’s soul. So this is the man that ruled an empire. Or, was.
dragon wip: also atla. a lot of Feelings, with a pinch of plot. dragon zuko is having a Time. probably going to be a lot shorter than i initially planned, but word counts have a habit of getting away from me, so who knows? excerpt:
Zuko stares at the long, scaly body now trailing down the hallway—his body, he realizes with horror—and tries not to scream. He’s a fucking dragon. What the hell? He clamors to his feet, slipping and thudding back to the floor several times as he tries to figure out where exactly his feet are now and how they’re supposed to move. What the hell. Stars and sands, he knew Peony was trouble.
tagging some friends hope u don't mind <3
