Brief 5: Pushing Boundaries, Student Competitions in Games Art and Design (Reflection)
Tumblr media
Figure 1 (RPG character from my game in a crouch pose, 2024)
This was the most challenging assignment till date. Us students were involved in researching different art competitions and were encouraged to try to follow the guidelines of those events and create those 3D artefacts in the relevant fields. I created a successful locomotion state system for my RPG game which allowed my character to walk and run forward with an idle pose. I also finalized the crouch animation with a custom camera zoom out effect which I really felt proud of incorporating into my game as I have seen those in many popular titles.
Since I still have almost 2 months left and with the reading week and the vacation coming up, I would like to believe that I can end up with a small RPG game with fully functioning dialogue system with NPCs that provide quests and a full fledged combat system. If I can finish it before the deadline, I will enroll for the 'Best Student Game' category in GDWC Winter 2024. I do believe that I spent quite a lot of time just researching which is a bit negative as you have to always be researching and creative when it comes to working within a 3D space. However, since this is my first time creating a game from scratch, I feel very encouraged and hopeful about creating my own game in Unreal Engine.

“I feel like a better comparison to Byleth are the Persona protagonists (at least from 3 onwards), with the whole being silent while also being their own character. Plus the way Byleth's supports are written is kinda similar to the social links in those games.”
I once posted a video explaining why silent protagonists are so popular in Asian countries rather than the cooler reception they get in the West, and part of that is how these protagonists can embody Buddhist ideals. Byleth takes it a step further because of the Buddhist themes.
youtube
If we look back at the Nintendo Dream interview, the devs believed most players would pick the BE house and that playing SS would be the most difficult path for players due to their attachment to Edelgard. However, they called Flower the conquest route, saying it leads to hadou while Edelgard own S support calls her path hadou, the route is even named Safflower in Japan meaning attraction.
Because Byleth/the player was attracted to Edelgard, they led Fodlan to the tyranny they were supporting throughout the route (likely unwittingly). They put someone unfit to rule in charge, someone who cared less about the people sacrificed for her war so that she can increase her own power as said in Safflower's epilogue. They lost access to Nirvana at the end, Nirvana being the path of liberation. Because they player acted selfishly, due to attraction and attachment to Edelgard, they failed to be the all-loving hero they were supposed to be.
In the end, when Edelgard was revealed as the Flame Emperor and involved with the people you fought throughout White Clouds, the players are expected to accept this knowledge. To accept that Edelgard lied to and tried to manipulate them, and that while you were fighting TWSITD she was working with them. She worked with them during the Lonato incident and their attempted theft of the Sword of the Creator, she worked with them on Flayn's kidnapping and the experiments that followed., she worked with them during the Part 1 paralogues where they were trying to get their hands on any relics they could while manipulating the Western Church, she worked with them hiding Kronya leading to Jeralt's death. She was the one who hired Kostas with orders to kill her classmates, and if you pay attention to her scenes with Thales she contradicts what she tells you during her supports as she knows Thales and TWSITD are the ones behind the experiments while Hubert reveals she knows they turned her father into their puppet.
In the face of the reveal, the player is expected to put aside that attachment and attraction and, you know, actually take in and understand the full extent of what is being revealed. Their understanding of Fodlan should come into questions, as the narrative Edelgard has been feeding you is for her own benefit (much like TWSITD slipping Claude info during GDWC). She was deliberately trying to sway you into supporting her, so everything she said should be taken with a grain of salt, especially when Safflower repeatedly depicts her being a liar. And from there, it wanted you to pick liberation over conquest.
The fact that Byleth does so by default and the options to join her are framed as changing the story shows how OOC it is for them to support her at the end of WC. Byleth accepts the truth and acts accordingly. A lot of players do not.

3Tower: Get Ready for Haunting Gameplay Adventures
Tumblr media
3Tower is a new first-person horror game is working to find its way onto Linux and Windows PC, maybe even Steam Deck. Thanks to the nonstop creativity of the team at Wechselbalg Studio, the horror keeps getting better. Working to find its way onto Steam. Alright, thriller fans and fellow Linux players — buckle up. Wechselbalg Studio unleashing a public demo of 3Tower, and let me tell you—it’s creepy, it’s tense, and it’s exactly the kind of spine-chilling experience we live for. And native support is also incoming.
I’m thrilled to share that we absolutely plan to release a native Linux version of 3Tower alongside the full launch.
Wechselbalg shares our passion for open-source and believes 3Tower is a perfect match for the platform. Even better — they’re planning to release a Linux demo with full gamepad support in the coming weeks! While they can’t make any promises just yet, it’s looking likely that it’ll run on the Steam Deck too, giving us an early hands-on with the first-person horror wherever we game. Made by Swen "El Dockerr" Kalski, 3Tower isn’t just another indie thriller title trying to jump-scare its way into relevance. This title has atmosphere. It breathes dread. And even in this early demo release, it sets the stage for something way bigger — a full launch on Steam. And a shot at global recognition in the 2025 Game Development World Championship (GDWC). So what’s 3Tower about? You’re the new night watchman. Sounds simple enough, right? Except your new gig isn’t guarding some sleepy warehouse or tech firm. You’re stationed at the Three Tower Cemetery, a graveyard notorious for housing the so-called “problematic dead.”
Graveyard order System in 3Tower
youtube
The only thing keeping these restless spirits locked in their graves? Three ancient towers running some weird old tech. When the towers hum, the dead stay down. But when they glitch out — which, of course, they will — things start crawling, whispering, and maybe worse. Your job is to survive the night. No, really. That’s it. No big weapon arsenal, no overpowered flashlight that burns ghosts to ash. Just you, the dark, and the growing realization that something’s watching you. Or waiting. The demo’s short — about 20 minutes of gameplay — but it absolutely nails the vibe. The full story is locked for now, but even without it, the experience is tight and terrifying. From the unsettling sound design to those perfectly timed jumpscares (yes, I yelped out loud—don’t judge), this thing already feels special. And yes, it runs on Linux. Smoothly, too. Steam Deck is unconfirmed. Whether you're in it for the creepy lore, the heart-pounding moments, or to support indie first-person horror done right, 3Tower deserves a spot on your radar. If this is what Kalski can deliver in a demo, I can’t wait to see what thrills the full game has in store. So, dim the lights, and get ready to download the demo soon. So, dim the lights, and get ready to download the demo soon. The night shift at Three Tower Cemetery is due to start on <Steam.

It is clear that members of the family were buried at a common ground. In addition, the graves of the people that belonged to a given family preferred to design their graves using the same materials, same shape, same size and the same design, it shows the commonness among the people of the family and their uniformity. This in most cases acted as a form of identity to a certain family. For instance, the Comings family that consisted of Lydia, Benjamin, Samuel and Josiah, all had identical graves. This shows the preference of a given family having identical graves. Hereunder is the clear data about the people, their ages, sex, date of death, the type of grave one was buried in, material used to make the graves, design of the grave, the condition of the grave, and the size of the grave and little in formation of concern (Dethlefsen and Deetz 1996). Competition 01
When I entered the Game Development World Championship (GDWC) it felt like a very exciting opportunity to showcase myself as a 3D artist. Participants in the competition had 30 days to design, develop and complete a game level, so the schedule was tight. My main focus was 3D modeling and texturing, whilst my teammate dealt with gameplay and level design.
Tumblr media
"We got to thinking and decided to make a game based on taco sushi, an octagonal TV series, and end up with a competition that involves zany, quixotic challenges. One asset we obtained from the Unreal Marketplace, and that we planned to feature prominently in the game was a talking cat as our main character. I went to added a blade fan which was a paramount piece in playing this level dynamic. We even had a bunch of models and buildings made elsewhere that we could simply drop into our game to save us time and give us more time to build the game specifically.
I mostly modeled and textured all the major components that made the level feel alive. Developing the insides of the level, pillars, trap walls, and different preventions to improve the play experience. The designs were inspired by the style of Takeshi's Castle, where I wanted the challenges to be fun, yet somewhat annoying, but which would tie in well with the overall theme.
I found that planning the level helped a lot keep the modeling process simple. By the time we started implementing assets in the game, we knew how the obstacles and environment would work. The hard deadline forced me to be productive and innovative and also work alongside my partner to make sure that I could integrate the models in the game world seamlessly.

Brief 5: Pushing Boundaries, Student Competitions in Games Art and Design (More about the competition)
The competition was linked to us students by our wonderful lecturer Neil and I was made aware of this event. The competition I am enrolling for is 'The Game Development World Championship' (GDWC 2024 Winter Season - The Game Development World Championship)
As per the latest statistics, there are around 45000 game developers already competing for the 2024 Winter Season. It started back in 12th of August, 2024 and the deadline is 31st of December, 2024 with still 55 days remaining. This will provide me with ample time to try my hand at creating a very small but concise RPG game with working questlines, NPCs and input poses.
As this is the biggest game development championship in the world, it attracts a large number of participants and a large number of interested sponsors and studios looking to get behind some of the best projects made under different categories. Since I am still a learning student over at the University of Hertfordshire, I was thinking of enrolling under the 'Best Student Game' category.
Hopefully by enrolling in this competition, it gives me fire and passion to develop something far greater and ambitious than what I thought was merely impossible.
