The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife confirmed that a female fisher, a mammal that was collected as roadkill in Ashtabula County in February 2023, was pregnant. Although that fisher did not successfully give birth, the results are a sign that fishers are returning to Ohio.
A fisher is a forest-dwelling carnivorous mammal in the weasel family. Fishers were extirpated from Ohio in the mid-1800s. In 2013, Ohio’s first modern-day fisher sighting was confirmed. Since then, there have been 40 confirmed fisher observations across nine northeast Ohio counties (Ashtabula, Columbiana, Geauga, Trumbull, Mahoning, Lake, Jefferson, Harrison, and Tuscarawas). Two-thirds of those sightings occurred in the last three years. Fishers are moving westward from established populations in Pennsylvania and naturally coming back to Ohio.
Fishers, such as the one here on a trail camera, have been confirmed in nine northeast Ohio counties through verified sightings. The fisher is a medium-sized mammal related to river otters and weasels.

Tyler Merkle, Ohio inmate A691559, born 1989, incarceration intake in November 2016 at age 27, sentenced to 5 years, released from custody January 2021
Sexual Battery
Former Chardon Schools’ tutor and assistant coach Tyler P. Merkle admitted in August 2016 to having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 15-year-old Chardon High School student.
Geauga County Common Pleas Court Judge David Fuhry sentenced the now 27-year-old to five years in prison and fined him $4,000 for his conduct.
In so doing, the court adopted the recommendation of prosecutors that Merkle be given 60 months in prison on each of four counts of sexual battery, which the sentences to run together. Fuhry also imposed a $1,000 fine on each of the counts.
Merkle had agreed earlier to plead guilty to four counts of sexual battery, a high-tier felony of the third degree. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss eight other felony counts at sentencing.
Fuhry told Merkle his actions were not just socially unacceptable, they were criminal.  “It was felonious; these aren’t misdemeanors,” he said. “They are sex offenses. Sex offenses are treated seriously.”
Those sex offenses branded Merkle a Tier III sex offender, noted Fuhry, requiring him to register in person with the sheriff in the county in which he resides every 90 days for life.
“I take note of the collateral (reporting) consequences, they are severe,” he said. “I take note, too, that this was a sex offense visited on a minor and you knew her age. This wasn’t a case of mistaken age.”
Fuhry told Merkle he knew his conduct was illegal, because he researched it and knew he could go to prison for it. And, even after he looked up the potential consequences, he added Merkle persisted in his conduct.
“That’s what we call blatant disregard for the law,” said Fuhry, adding Merkle presumable was mature enough to understand right from wrong. “You knew this was as wrong as wrong could be.”
The judge also noted, before pleading guilty when Merkle violated conditions of his bond by having contact with the victim through a digital music application called Spotify.
While the court recognized the many positive things Merkle has done in his life, “they don’t cancel out what happened here.”
Although he had provided a written statement to the probation department, Merkle told Fuhry he was sorry for his actions.
“I apologize to everyone involved that had no reason to be involved because of my mistake. From the top down, from (the victim) to her family, to my family, my friends, the community, the school district, the football team, the coaches, everyone,” he said. “I caused this and it could have been avoided with better judgment.”
Defense counsel Rick Perez requested Merkle avoid prison time and be sentenced to community control.
While Perez told Fuhry that Merkle was not making any excuses for his conduct, he pointed out the victim was the one who made the initial contact.
“He didn’t teach her, he didn’t coach her, he didn’t have her in study hall,” Perez said, adding Merkle knew the victim’s brother and that is why she texted him.
Merkle texted her back and during the summer of 2015 the texting became more frequent, Perez said.
“In the fall, they started seeing each other,” he explained. “He realizes now he should have put the brakes on everything. He let it go a little too far and all of a sudden he fell in love with her.”
Perez told Fuhry if the victim were present in the courtroom, he would assume she would not be asking the court to impose any type of penalty on his client.
“I know her parents feel differently and that’s their right,” he acknowledged.
Geauga County Prosecutor Jim Flaiz said there are consequences for criminal conduct and having sexual conduct with a minor is a serious offense, especially when the defendant is in a position of trust such as a teacher.
“When you’re in a position of authority like that and you take advantage of the situation and manipulate a young girl into a sexual relationship, that’s really bad conduct,” he said. “That’s exactly what happened here.”
Added Flaiz, “This is a 15-year-old girl who’s manipulated by the defendant and engaged in a long-term sexual relationship with him.”
The prosecutor told Fuhry the damage to the victim is probably irreparable.
Merkle initially was placed on administrative leave from school, where he served as a part-time tutor, study hall monitor and assistant football coach.
The inappropriate conduct occurred between Dec. 1, 2015, and April 12, 2016.
Subsequent appeals were unsuccessful.

The abandoned Warner & Swasey Observatory, constructed by Worchester Warner and Ambrose Swasey as a gift for Case School of Applied Science.
Worchester Warner and Ambrose Swasey founded the Warner & Swasey Company in 1880 and manufactured telescopes and other precision tools. Warner and Swasey became trustees of the Case School of Applied Science and constructed an observatory for the school as a gift.
Designed by the architectural firm Walker & Weeks, the observatory was built between 1918 and 1920 at the cost of $87,000. The original wing on the south end consisted of a copper dome atop a cylindrical brick tower for a 9½-inch refractor, which was relocated from the backyard of Warner and Swasey’s mansions. The new facility also included two four-inch transits, a zenith telescope, and two Riefler clocks.
The new observatory was dedicated at 2:30 p.m. on October 12, 1920. Dr. W.W. Campbell, one of the most noted astronomers of the world and director of the Lick Observatory, gave the opening address.
In October 1940, a new wing to the observatory was completed, which was outfitted with a library, lecture hall, and a new 24-inch Burrell Schmidt telescope from Warner & Swasey that was installed in the spring of 1941 at the cost of $127,000.
Light pollution began to impact the dark skies that initially attracted Warner and Swasey A new $200,000 observatory, Nassau Astronomical Station, was completed 30 miles to the east in Geauga County on September 7, 1957. The Burrell Schmidt telescope was relocated to the new facility. To compensate for the relocation, a 36-inch telescope was installed.
An enlargement of the library and office space were completed in 1963.
In 1978, the Astronomy Department at Case Western Reserve University made a deal with the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy to build a new observatory at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. The Burrell Schmidt telescope was moved from the Geauga County observatory was relocated in May 1979, and the 36-inch reflector from the facility was moved to Nassau in 1980.
Public night lectures, which were open to the public, were relocated to the Museum of Natural History’s Murch Auditorium in 1979.
After the reflector was removed from the facility, the building was used for offices for Case Western. In 1982, the five remaining faculty members who were stationed in the building were moved to the main campus of Case Western. The structure was sold in 1983 to a partnership controlled by Alfred Quarles for the television outfit, TBA, Inc. for $130,000.
The abandoned observatory was sold at a foreclosure auction on September 6, 2005, to Nayyir Al Mahdi and his girlfriend, Stacey Stoutemire, for $115,000. The couple had planned on restoring the building into a residence. The plans were scrapped after the owner was convicted of mortgage fraud and sent to prison in 2007.

he has been found. unfortunately, he was found dead. he had fallen down the ravine in the back of the house, hitting his head. he apparently died pretty much on impact, so he didn’t suffer, and he didnt struggle. thank you so much everyone who reblogged and tried to get the word out. i appreciate it and i know he would have too.
MY FATHER IS MISSING
He went missing from the Munson/Chardon area in Geauga County, Ohio sometime last night (October 1). He currently is struggling with mental issues and Parkinson's, causing him to be paranoid and hallucinate. These photos aren’t super recent, he’s lost a lot of weight but still looks very much like this. Not sure what he was wearing since he left when everyone was asleep. Has a tattoo of a scythe on his upper arm. He left on foot so couldn’t be too far.
I don’t know if this will reach anyone in the area but I figured it couldn’t hurt. He’s not dangerous, just, very, very confused.

Notre Dame Academy (Famicos Notre Dame Apartments)
1325 Ansel Rd.
Cleveland, OH
The former Notre Dame Academy is located at 1325 Ansel Road in Cleveland, Ohio. Built in 1914-1915, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Notre Dame Academy opened on Sept. 10, 1877. It was founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame who began an educational tradition which continues to the present. The first classes began in temporary facilities while permanent quarters were being erected at E. 18th St. and Superior Ave. The new building opened May 1, 1878. The downtown facility became overcrowded, and in 1912 the Sisters purchased the Joseph K. Bole estate on Ansel Rd. at Superior Ave. for a new headquarters building and academy. This second home opened Jan. 11, 1915.
This Gothic Revival-style building was designed by William Jansen to house the Notre Dame Academy, a Catholic Elementary and High School founded in 1877, which variously provided education to only girls, and to both girls and boys over its history, eventually transitioning in this building from a co-ed school to one that served only girls in all grades, and eventually into a High School without an Elementary program. The building features an E-shaped footprint, brown brick facade with stone trim, three-over-three and two-over-two double-hung windows, gabled wall dormers, gable parapets, buttresses, a central tower at the front entrance with octagonal corner pillars that feature crenellated parapets, stepped parapets with decorative stone trim around brick panels and quatrefoil windows, a tower at the north side of the building with a single octagonal chimney and a belfry, entrance doors with gothic arched transoms, gabled roofs, and gothic arched windows on the rear wing, which feature tracery. The building housed the Notre Dame Academy until 1963.
In May 1963 the Sisters decided to relocate the academy to the suburb of Chardon, Ohio, in Geauga County. They sold the "Castle on Ansel" to the Cleveland Board of Education, which operated a junior high known as Lulu Diehl Junior High School there for several years during the 1960s, after which it stood vacant for thirty years. The building was listed with the National Register of Historic Places on May 26, 1988. In 1999, the Famicos Foundation, advocates for affordable housing, acquired the building and rehabilitated it for adaptive reuse as an apartment building serving low-income senior citizens known as Famicos Notre Dame Apartments, a function the building continues to serve today.
