I swear to wizard god, thatsthat24, aka Thomas Sanders, is a magnificent human being. He is like a goofy, adorable angel in human form and I loved every minute I could be around him at GeekyCon 2015. He irradiates such a nice energy and happiness, it's incredible. We should all try to be like this guy, at least a bit. He made every one of us feel important, special, and appreciated. Thank you, Thomas!

Saturday at GeekyCon means non-stop programming and fandom fun from morning until... well, the morning again. It means more signings and photobooths, the HPA’s Apparating Library, and TONS of panels, programs, and performances. Oh, and Ty Simpkins taking names at Quidditch:
Tumblr media
The morning started with Improv with Jon Cozart and friends Maxwell Glick and Jackie Emerson. Nothing wakes us up like laughing with hilarious YouTubers.
Maxwell and Jon later joined Thomas Sanders to tell us How 2 Disney, with advice on the parks and nostalgia for that great childhood monolith. The panel ended with a rousing Mulan “Be A Man” sing-a-long!

When it comes to advice and experience panels, today was packed with fantastic feminism. Meghan Tonjes, Leigh Lahav, Tessa Netting, and the Hillywood sisters Hannah and Hindi took to the GeekyCon MainStage to talk about their experiences “Internetting While Female,” what inspires them, and their advice to empower others.
Tumblr media
Speaking of inspiration, our friends at the Harry Potter Alliance celebrated ten incredible years of using fandom to inspire change at their 10th Birthday Party, complete with party hats. Happy Birthday, HPA!
Another GeekyCon staple, Team Starkid, performed a set list created by their Twitter followers in A(nother) Very Starkid Event, complete with totally awesome matching shirts!

And now we’re all dolled up and dancing our faces off at the Esther Earl Rocking Charity Ball! We’ll see you later for the traditional spectacle that is Total Eclipse of the Heart! You don’t want to miss it!
PS: We are creating a hilarious bunch of GeekyCon Reaction GIFs featuring our Special Guests!

So, the How2Disney panel was probably my favorite part of GeekyCon because all we did was talk about how much we love Disney and discuss Disney theories. Plus, Thomas Sanders and Jon Cozart were on the panel with Maxwell Glick (mrcheezypop). We sang Disney songs and sorted Disney characters into Hogwarts houses and it was just so much fun. Plus, Max asked some Disney trivia and I won a special edition Disneyland Diamond Edition park map. It was such a great time.

Quote
Passion isn’t defined by how much you know about a specific fandom, it’s just how you feel. And how you feel isn’t quantifiable by how much trivia you can spout. Being less than receptive for people who want to know more, people who are just getting into fandom – it harms fandom. The only way to make it better, the only way to make it bigger, is to say, ‘Come in, come in, let’s share. I’ll tell you what I know: let’s talk about everything.’

Finding Home Again: Thoughts, on Gender, Accomodations, Apologies, and Making Things Right.
So last year before Leakycon (Geekycon), I spent about a week and a half of being tremendously frustrated over a (unintentionally) trans discriminatory badge policy.  I spent days conversing back and forth with help desk.  I spent a fair portion of the con grappling with the unease and mental malaise that dealing with that policy brought myself and others.  In the height of it all, I wrot a blog post titled The Elephant in the Registration Process that detailed the issues with the policy and my frustration with good people doing bad things.  I pleaded for those good people to do better and I knew that there had to be some way. I had simply requested that I not be deadnamed (called by one’s birthname, a deeply hurtful act, for those who don’t know) and that there be a way to resolve this issue that wasn’t othering (stickers over names, crossing out, etc) and didn’t create a spectacle.  I was somewhat placated when I eventually got a printed badge with my name, figured it was probably the best I could hope for, and mostly resigned myself to the fact that the world was not a wish granting factory and sometimes circumstances were cruel.  I did my best to ignore the issues. When tickets went on sale for this year, we all celebrated a little victory that meant a lot.  You could now use only your last name on an ID to check in and didn’t have to enter a full legal name into the reg system.  For the first time since 2011, in five years of this con, I could put my own name on my badge, not something someone once called me.  It was a little victory, but it was something at least. What I didn’t expect was to arrive to volunteer orientation and to hear staff members explaining gender politics and identity clearly and concisely.  I did not expect to hear volunteers being told in no uncertain terms to use neutral titles and terms in addressing attendees and to not use any gendered terms unless they were absolutely sure they knew someone’s correct pronouns.  I did not expect to hear a staff member state that looking at a sex indicated on a ID was not an appropriate method of identifying pronouns for someone.  I did not expect to hear that gender neutral bathrooms were not only available, but had been fought for.  I did not expect to hear that those bathrooms had clear and logical pictorial labeling with the type of facilities available (pictures of toilets or urinals and toliets) or for those facilities to be relatively centrally located to con activities.  I did not expect pronoun stickers to be included in swag bags by default, or for people to start talking about writing pronouns on to badges even if you were cis to avoid othering anyone.  I did not expect to be thoroughly and universally addressed by my correct pronouns, or for multiple presenters to remind attendees to use neutral pronouns to refer to others during group discussions unless they knew otherwise. I am overwhelmed and so so appreciative of how the con staff came together and worked comprehensively to not only address the initial concern with legal names, but to completely overhaul how gender identity is addressed at the con.  Aside from an incident where a special guest referred to using correct pronouns as “the it thing to do now,” pretty much everyone was aware and accommodating.  The people didn’t change too much, so I believe a lot of the complete day and night difference was due to starting this discussion in this community and very openly and visibly discussing policies.  This is the con and the staff I know.  When it comes down to it, everyone makes mistakes.  Everyone will misstep sometimes.  We’re all human.  But seeing this community and the staff handle this issue in such a comprehensive and overwhelmingly positive and supportive way has been incredible. That week was hell last year.  Registration and the hoop jumping involved was hell.  But when it comes down to it, this all made it worth it.  Not once was my birth name ever on anything associated with this conference this year.  Not once did anyone make comments about whether I was a boy or a girl or looked better in dresses or binders or anything else.  People were incredibly supportive of exactly who I was, and that more than anything was incredible.  I spent the last day of the con running around in my favorite outfit I’ve ever worn, feeling more myself than I probably ever have.  I accidentally came out to my boss on my first day back because I was so used to not having to. (No worries, it went about as well as it could have and it was confirmed that he’ll defend me if dress code issues come up).  I have never felt more myself.  Even when terrible things happen, sometimes you make progress like this, and it feels worthwhile. There are things to work on still.  We need to find a balance between the safety of minors and issues of young trans folks not being able to be out in terms of emergency contact and how that’s handle.  A specific gender and sexuality issues touchpoint person would be good.  I’m working on my thoughts on how to address those things.  But we’re getting there.
