"Listen, this guy has the potential to be absolutely adored on this website, he is skeletal, tall described as resembling a large sad bird at least a couple of times and probably folds like a folding chair. He wears all black, he’s a doctor and a good one too, he is badly traumatized and extremely depressed and is doing weed about it (not only that but from what it seems my man is ostensibly smoking edibles). I am very much not normal about him and have been for a while."

it is sooooo sad when you read a book that is really quite good except you don't enjoy the portrayal of female characters which is to say that today i read gentlemen of the road by michael chabon (historical adventure novel set in the 10th century about two jewish bandits who become involved in a rebellion in the khazar empire) and it had so many things i liked–swashbuckling adventure and con artists and war elephants and swords and fun chapter titles and illustrations and a wide range of medieval jewish characters from different backgrounds–except that all the female characters were either fridged for backstory purposes, sex workers with no character development, sexually assaulted by villains, or some combination thereof :|

I'm listening to the Gentlemen of the Road audiobook (which is great) for the first time, but this book has been a favorite of mine for well over a decade. The story is fantastic & the prose is impeccable.
I mean just look at this, opening sentence of all time:

The only truck that looks good with fake wood siding. Don't know why I love it so much.
