the fact that gerald was supposed to have once been a truly kind man, a humanitarian, a scientist dedicated to the enrichment and prosperity of humanity only to spiral into vile and hate when the reason behind his kindness was snatched by the same humanity he once served…. insanity inducing

Y'all…I'm having a very disturbing realization dawn upon me. I don't really have a way of articulating this clearly yet, but I wanted to bring it up in case other people know about it:
I'm noticing that many people (namely white Americans) seem to act as branded-versions of themselves rather than who they genuinely are. Specifically, what I'm beginning to understand how insanely pernicious it is. I knew it existed because I grew up in it, but didn't realize how uncanny it actually looks when you watch it happen, nor what the implications are that we do this instead of connecting with each other as people.
It seems like any descriptor under the sun can become a brand, so long as it's understood that way more than it's understood as just a descriptor. "Man" is a brand. "Punk" is a brand. "Conservative" is a brand. "Left" is a brand. "Queer" is a brand. "Protestant" is a brand. "Catholic" is a brand. "Anticapitalist" is a brand. "Young professional" is a brand. "Good" is a brand. Words like "BIPOC" are also interpreted within a brand context.
I'm not sure if this is something that has always been there, but I only just noticed? Or if it's on the rise with commercialization? A bit of both? Something else?

Okay, finished Death and the Maidens and uh, yeah. Everything I saw that said it was fucking terrible was right. Absolutely hated it. -10000/10.
There was exactly 3 things about all of that I liked:
The concept of Nyssa as Talia's older half sister that's been running around doing humanitarian efforts for centuries (and literally nothing else about her backstory because holy fucking shit what).
The single moment of Talia being happy and enjoying herself and briefly vulnerable and open about how she doesn't have many friends (could have truly been some great character moment stuff in something else)
Alfred's sass.
That's it. That was everything I enjoyed about that story line. What the absolute fuck did I just read?
Anyway, uh. I'm gonna take the 3 things I liked about the story, try to scrub the memory of literally everything else, and work out what I would have liked to see happen with Nyssa & Talia instead and figure out how to incorporate that into a fic.

i can’t explain why but this makes me ill
#like i feel a legit knot in my stomach#tbh i’m not like the biggest beatles fan anymore but#it’s crazy to me how the band that did so much to open the cultural and musical worlds to people#and who used their status at the top of the world to genuinely push music forward and inspired countless acts#will be dethroned by someone who [while i won’t say is untalented but i personally struggle to find the good lyricist singer dancer or#performer or musican in] by all accounts is just a business tbh#like there’s nothing for music its all for charts accolades and money and that’s horrifying to think that someone can get this far with that#being the biggest goal.#that’s like sending 2010 mick jagger into the 60s and getting him to make the rolling stones popular#like businessman ≠ artist#you have to have an actual talent or reason for popularity to become popular and i see none of that#there’s no progression for anyone but her: the beatles pushed music stones pushed culture michael jackson pushed desegregation of popular#music#and she has…. ?#just looking for something she’s truly accomplished other than beating records because that’s all it seems to be#and she has no humanitarian reason for fame either#elton john was a huge star and remained a huge star not due to his musical output or breaking records but because he’s dedicated so much#time and money to causes greater than himself#he didn’t need to beat the beatles to carve his own place out in history#no one should have to beat them to that#their impact should be felt in ways that make it hard to think of a culture without them#because as it stands she’ll be seen as the chick that beat the beatles#never once used as a marker herself#it will still be them because they will remain important to culture and music#just as they would be without setting records#hell look at bob dylan#he has like 0 chart records and was given a nobel prize and will continue to be the marker for lyrical excellence#it just makes me so mad that the person who will beat all these records is doing it just to beat records tbh#it’s not deserved or even slightly important#it’s just a record to beat which SUCKS anyways i talked too long but im mad so :/

are you normal or did you figure out how to support a friend through a mental health crisis by thoroughly analysing the dynamics of four australians?
are you normal or did you figure out mid burnout how to trick your brain into working in a way that centres and upholds your own intuition and values by hearing their story?
are you normal or are you in the midst of a podcast binge on secular buddhism that you're having Lots Of Thoughts about because one musician mentioned it once?
are you normal or did songs put the fragments together in your brain to start you figuring out who you really are, when it's not what you're supposed to be?
are you normal or does a band doing things their own way and starting to learn how to feel more alive make you realise that you can work to implement that too and know you've got the grit in you to actually do it?
are you normal or are you bending the concepts of neurodivergence and mental health around art and spirituality and figuring out it's far less black and white than what the dsm gives you inroads to because you've seen the lived lives of people like you?
do you really want to be normal? or if you can get this much out of art and out of existence, isn't this something to be celebrated? if someone told you this was the impact you had on their lives, wouldn't you celebrate it?
won't you celebrate it with me?

also someone else pointed this out in the notes of that other post but trans people are like one of the main fronts in the reactionary culture wars across the US, Canada, UK, all these bastions of democracy and freedom and humanitarianism, and you’re scaremongering about homophobia as this uniquely Palestinian affliction as a pretext to support a genocide? the fuck is wrong with you? like genuinely what the fuck is wrong with you?

After the initial attacks from Hamas on October 7th, thousands of Palestinian labourers permitted to work in Israel unlawfully had their permits taken away, and were then held hostage, tortured and killed in Israeli detention facilities for 25 days.
They were denied food, water, all necessities and access to any legal representation. They endured some of the most horrific forms of torture and abuse, one man says that they were stripped naked and then urinated by children. One man was asked if he was thirsty and then had boiling water thrown on him. Israel did not allow any humanitarian aid to enter the facilities, so the abuse and torture was allowed to continue without intervention.
Hundreds were “released” by Israel and forced to walk 6km back to Gaza while it was actively being bombed and undergoing a ground invasion. The actual number of people held/released/killed is still unclear and the workers have said that they feel failed by the world.
What those labourers have undergone is the complete opposite to the testimonial of the hostage Hamas had released, who said she was treated fairly and received food, shelter and medical attention and was told that she would not be harmed.
To read those labourers stories and still call any of this Israel’s right to defend itself from Hamas is genuinely horrifying and truly ignorant.

anyway the key takeaway for those not yet radicalised, here, is that the architects of genocide will come to you with claims of opposing hatred, with claims of humanitarianism, with narratives that don't simply accuse the Enemy of being subhuman and needing extermination, but of the Enemy being the real perpetrators of oppression and genocide.
the reality is that a simple 'opposition to hatred and oppression' will not save you from supporting and abetting genocide. you need more than that, because you will be presented with arguments built specifically to prey on your kneejerk credulity for, and backing of, the 'victims' of oppression. what you will need is historical, material analysis of the forces at play and their histories. you will need to really ask yourself if the information you're receiving - even if it is an overwhelming and seemingly uncontested information - is coming from an interested party.
and you will find that there exists no disinterested party, that there exists no impartiality, there only exists the sides of genuine oppressors and genuinely oppressed. you will strip away the rhetoric and find that one of those groups consistently sits on one side of a fifth-generation fighter-bomber aircraft, and one sits on the other.

SOME PLACEMENTS I ADORE 🪽
⋆⟡♡⟡⋆
Part 1
Cancer Moon you are the kind of person who would get into a fist fight to help someone. Your mother instincts instantly kicks in when you see someone in trouble no matter who it is.
Capricorn Moon sooo ambitious and down to earth.
Venus in the 8th house yall are not only very beautiful and oh so sexy but you are also not afraid of DEEP conversation. You are not afraid to go balls deep because you are self aware. Also very genuine and down to earth.
Venus 3rd house even if people dont show it trust me you made their day. You are not afraid to give compliments. If someone got a new beautiful dress you are the first one to tell them.
Venus conjunct South Node yall are always so beautiful and what makes you even more beautiful is how down to earth you are. When I see this aspect I think of the lyrics by One Direction ”You dont know youre beautiful, thats what make you beautiful. ”
Lilith 2nd house the way you stand strong even tho people are constantly trying to take from you and tear you down. People see you as someone who have too much and because of that they want to take and take and take until you have nothing so that they can feel better.
Mars in Scorpio Mars/Pluto aspects you guys are real go getters but please dont exhaust yourself and remember that resting is okey. Everyone is so impressed by you guys even tho you are never satisfied with yourselves.
Lilith dominants please stop having those guilty feelings that there is something wrong with you. Its not your fault people are uncomfortable with how attracted they are to you.
Moon/Pluto and Scorpio Moon even if you guys can be very controlling and emotionally intense you are the ones who will stay with someone during hard times. You are the kind of people I would call to help hide a body.
Leo Venus you guys are so generous! And so loyal! Ive never seen a Leo Venus who wasnt gorgeous. I noticed yall are always well known where you live.
Leo Mars you guys reek confidence. Im jealous lol
Moon 11th house/Aquarius Moon the true humanitarians of the zodiac. My favorite placements.
Capricorn/Saturn 1st house/Virgo Rising being unapproachable is NOT the same as being unattractive. People are just so afraid of being turned down because you guys look a little snobby. Brave and confident people will approach you so who cares about those who are intimidated.
Pluto 1st house you guys are the protectors, not afraid to step in and stand up for those who cant do it themselves. You guys are NEEDED.
People with Saturn/Venus aspects are so refined and always look so polished. When I see a really elegant person I just know there is a Venus/Saturn aspect involved.

Do you ever read some mind-bogglingly senseless drivel from an angry "antizionist" speaking like an authority on the Hamas war, acting like it's the worst thing that's ever happened in the history of humanity, and that somehow throwing internet tantrums makes them simultaneously a pariah and a saviour, and you genuinely wonder whether this is their first time caring about something?
Like seriously I remember a time not even 10 years ago when I was begging people on social media to care about humanitarian issues. Darfur. The Rohingyas. The immigration camps. And my efforts were almost universally met with shrugs, or silence, or outright criticism for bringing the mood down.
And now those same people are screaming bloody murder at me, accusing me of being heartless, inhuman, uncaring, sometimes even a Nazi, because I disagree with them about the best way to minimize the death toll in this particular conflict.
I don't know what to say to you. You're acting like toddlers. It's as if you've just discovered empathy but you haven't figured out how to apply it universally yet.
