oh yeah anon you're 100% correct! i often dunk on rimmer for being an asshole, and he absolutely IS an asshole, but i don't think he rlly has bad intentions or actively wants to hurt ppl. i agree that his desire for power is more about being loved than anything else. i don't think he'd even know what to do if he WAS put in charge of something important lol. i suspect he would probably just panic a bit once he realised he had to actually advise and care for ppl tbh. i think initially he'd enjoy lording it over ppl but once ppl started criticising him or he had to make important decisions i'd imagine he'd have a breakdown lmao

i mean in siliconia it's revealed that he actively enjoys being a "mindless" servant bc he doesn't have to worry abt disappointing ppl anymore........ i think that any kind of pressure would make him crumble. it's clear that it isn't rlly power that he wants, it's adoration that he wants, just like you said. i mean, lister even calls him out on it in the better than life book lol.

rimmer hasn't received any honest unconditional love from... anyone ever, as far as i can remember (unless you count nirvannah maybe???). his parents seemed to show some kind of affection, or at least favouritism, to his brothers, specifically bc they were mentally and physically talented. i think he took the lesson from this that ppl/his parents would only ever love him if he could be the person his parents had wanted him to be.

the irony of this is that it's the sheer stubbornness he had abt achieving the goals his parents set for him (like attaining officerhood) that make him so unlikeable and insufferable to the ppl around him. he's uptight and hyperfocused on achievement and avoids hobbies, socialising and relaxing bc he doesn't want anything to get in the way of his goals, and that makes him completely unpalatable. any creativity or sentimentality or gentleness he has was either squashed out of him by his parents or suppressed by himself.

he lives inside this construction of what he thinks a man should be like. but it's not him, and everyone else can tell that, even though he can't. it's the lack of sincerity that makes him unlikeable, when it's a habit he took on BECAUSE he wanted to be loved.

i think it's all subconscious, like if you asked him abt this he'd either be confused or vehemently deny it. but i do believe that at the root of his character there's just... a desire to be loved. he does confess to it himself in "thanks for the memory". it's very clear in ace as well, a man who is clearly generating a persona for himself in the hopes that it'll make ppl love him. like most aspects of red dwarf, rimmer is funny on the surface but deeply painfully tragic if you think abt him for too long.

ANYWAYS SORRY this is basically just a more verbose annoying version of what you said lmao. the point is that i completely agree anon. he's so awful but so pitiful and sad it's hard NOT to love him despite the fact that he frustrates me so much sometimes i wanna pull my hair out lol

Martyn fancies himself a schemer, someone who's not afraid to play the game the way it's intended. If that means earning a powerful ally's trust only to shatter it then he was going to do it. It's a death game for a reason. But he doesn't let Martyn know. He doesn't even hold it against him. He doesn't see the bloodthirst anymore, only the broken pieces lying underneath. ~ or the King's Hand, it was the thrill of feeling Useful, Powerful, Feared (loved). De-Rationalization & De-Politization of Palestinian Resistance

Notice how in mainstream media you almost never hear WHY the resistance attack happened. You just hear generic stuff about how they're "muslim extremists" or "want to kill all jews", but never their own stated reasons & demands.

Now you might think that the palestinian resistance went too far in their Methods - certainly, several hundred innocents were killed & while they made an effort not to make it harder than necessary on the hostages, being kidnapped is traumatizing by itself - the leaked convos with Netanyahu show that some captives definitely suffered..

But their basic demands as stated by themselves (that you are never told about by much of the media) are:

stop occupying us

release mistreated prisoners held on spurious charges

don't heckle people who want to pray in Al-Aqsa (this being what started this "round" of fighting)

This is all stuff that Israel should do ANYWAY. These are all things human rights orgs and/or the UN have been calling for for YEARS.

And seeing as nothing happened despite human rights orgs complaining, is it so strange ppl decided to take it in their own hands? Especially after we've seen how little political will there is to use any leverage to restrain Israel.

I believe strongly that you can only judge individuals by what they can influence, so I will not ever call the death or kidnapping of random israeli civilians 'glorious' or 'deserved' or indulge in 'nobody is innocent' talk cause that's a convevient simplification to get rid of cognitive dissonance. War is always ugly, innocents always get caught up, that's why it should only be the last resort.

However, he who makes peaceful reform impossible makes violent uprising inevitable. It's not a question of moralizing, it's cause & effect, human nature. You may drive out nature with the pitchfork but it always stubbornly returns. Humans don't like to be slaves. No amount of moralizing or repression will change this.

So when I see how the media isn't telling us why they are doing this & instead telling us that they're just irrational extremists or pointing to some long disavowed document from the 80s when they were first founded & more extreme, I see how denying the opponent's rationality obscures a correct understanding of the situation.

The deaths of Israeli civilians shouldn't have happened. But how could they realistically have been prevented? If you don't see Palestinians as rational, and think they're just killing for killing's sake, you may think the answer is more repression.

But if you acknowledge the other side's rationality, you realize that violence is dangerous to the one doing it as well. Aside from hardcore ideologues, most people would not choose violence if they had other options.

But Israel has systematically cut those off: Peaceful protesters are shot, activists get arrested, strikes & boycotts are met with slander & lawfare, diplomacy is met with intransigence...

If you see Palestinians as having reason & not being any more likely to use violence than anyone else, the blame is obviously with those who cut off all peaceful means! (and besides did a piss poor job guarding their own citizens, pulling the army to the west bank & shooting at their own ppl)

There is this saying in my country that when someone's being sanctimonious they have "rented morality for themselves" (leaving only immorality for the opponent) but what we're seeing here, much more, is ppl acting like they rented rationality for themselves.

Hence all this propaganda to portray them as an irrational horse doing gratuitous mass rape/executions instead of a competent army that, while not perfect, looks way more disciplined & sophisticated than the Israelis RN.

And of course, if they "just hate us cause they hate us", that makes it easier to justify draconic measures because there is no cause that be fixed.

Because they're scared that if ppl heard their reasoning & demands, they would maybe agree with their goals if not their methods.

Notice also that it's the same de-rationalizing as you would see with an abuser: The girlfriend just bitches cause she's a bitch, the children just contradict cause they want to contradict... not because their feelings are hurt because of abuse.

I think thinking & reason are just as fundamental to humanity as feeling & sensitivity, & that to portray them as unthinking is just as awful as to deny ppl's suffering or humanity in an emotional sense.

And yes, there's an obvious parallel to how post 9/11 they stressed the attackers' religion (encouraging persecution of muslims worlwide) to detract from their political goals. They were angry about american meddling in the cold war. Again this isn't justifying their deeds, this is just cause & effect. But then what did they do? Yet more meddling & destabilizing. The most counterproductive possible thing. & in the end they got Bin Laden with spy cameras and a swat team. The war did nothing to catch him. He wasn't even in Afghanistan.

Like even if we grant for argument's sake that Hamas are unambiguous baddies, you would, idk, get the USA to use leverage to make Qatar extradite their leaders and put them on trial, or catch them with police, not mass murder civilians.

Sometimes it just skips his mind that despite everything, he too deserves the world. And every once in a while you need to remind him about it. Ran~ Not many people are taller than him, you are no exception. So it makes sense that in order to kiss him you need to be on your tippy toes. And still you're only able to reach his neck. He knows that he lives in the shadows. He's not sane. He's not good. He's bad. He's ugly. You can tell that these awful thoughts keep him awake at night. The Chapter of Necessary Filler & the Obligatory Cliffhanger

I love that Isayama isn't rushing everything and is actually focusing on little details and small interactions between characters. He really isn't glorifying an "apocalyptical scenario" just for the sake of destruction in itself or shock value.

This chapter felt like a nostalgia trip, but I wasn't in for the ride.

This chapter was a breath of fresh air ngl. These past chapters were mostly full of either a flashback, monologue or just having two characters talking in a realm where nothing happens and time is frozen, but, at last, the plot is moving foward in the real world too. Not only it contained long gone titan action, but also great character development/moments as well. I missed this.

I'm not so much disappointed with Connie in this moment as I am with the direction his character arc has gone lately in general. I miss when he was fun instead of angry all the time.

I think everyone is acting super irrational. Eren is going to destroy the world but all the SC are "accepting" of it. I think deep down they are all horrified and in a completely insane mental state causing irrational decisions and thoughts such as Jean being okay with genocide.

I understand that Connie is desperate to find a comfort after all the ppl he lost, but I'm still extremely disappointed in him for wanting to murder a child. Not just Connie tho, the same goes for Jean and Armin. Armin didn't say "Let's not kill a freaking child" he just objected because he didn't want to provoke Reiner and Pieck.

Gabi’s design is based on Eren, and she’s had similarities and parallels to him in the past, what does the parallel in this chapter mean stacked on top of all of that?  About 70% say it’s to further emphasize how similar she is to him at her core.  12.7% don’t think it was an intentional parallel to that Eren scene, 7.7% say she’s going to receive his titan, and a solid 1% wrote in the eloquent thesis of “Fuck Gabi.”

I didn't like any parallels that include Gabi. Not this one, and most certainly not the one with Sasha.

It definitely foreshadows something, but I don't think it's that she'll inherit his titan. I think she's going to be the one to end this madness and break the cycle. Unlike Eren, who fights for freedom both for himself and his loved ones, Gabi will fight for peace and equality: a different kind of freedom.

It symbolizes Gabi's character arc starting to go in the opposite direction of Eren, rather than showing them being similar.

It symbolizes Gabi's change in motivation to do anything to save her friends. Just as Eren's motivation in the mirror scene really marked the moment he turned genocidal to protect his friends.

A chapter in the endgame that’s almost reminiscent of the defense of Trost with respect to mindless titan action and defending a base.  Despite many other happenings such as the rumbling going on currently, 46% were totally fine with the focus on mindless titan action and thought it was written well, whereas 35.6% enjoyed it, but wished there was a bit more beyond checking that box.  10.8% wanted a larger focus on the titans in the rumbling, and 5.5% would have preferred a focus shift away from Shiganshina entirely.

I love the fact that shows how prepared and easy fighting mindless titans is for them now. When the titans attacked Trost they were hopeless and Jean was the one frozen in fear. Now we get to see him clear up the titans with ease.

I think showing smaller happenings before the big reveal of Eren's titan and the effects of the rumbling are important buildup.

I would have rather focused on what's happening to Pieck and the others near the wall.

I didn't feel that was the focus, but either way, I liked it.

I wish more would’ve happened outside of it BUT it’s important to show them being dealt with otherwise readers would be like “wait, what about all those people who turned into titans?” So not the best, but necessary.

I'm not crazy about fighting scenes, I prefer the ones where they discuss stuff, but these were really emotional with Shadis and Pixis and everything. Like, it wasn't even so much about fighting itself, for me at least, but about Shadis uniting people again and Armin setting Pixis free finally.

I wish the chapter had explored the idea of Titans appearing now that the Military has begun using weapons which are more effective against humans than Titans. I had thought that the reappearance of Titans would do much more damage since the Military is no longer equipped to handle such threats.

Reminds me of the Trost arc and I love it, but it will probably end up being the last time we see pure titans as this much of a threat.

Although many believe that he’s too focused on other things to concern himself with them, and many others feel certain that mindless titans attacking the soldiers is part of his greater plan.

3 times it was mentioned that Eren/Zeke can't control the Titans, I think someone else is controlling them. Possibly Ymir, maybe we'll see Eren getting betrayed.

It's highly likely the Founding Titan's power and control over Pure Titans has a collective effect of sorts. That is, it can turn Pure Titans back into humans, but if it did, it would happen to ALL Pure Titans, not just a specific group of them. It's possible that is how the Fritz royalty used the Pure Titans while maintaining the Eldian population during ancient times. Here, if Eren were to use that aspect of the Founding Titan's power, both the Military Branch Officer Titans AND the Wall Titans would be turned back into humans. Right now, Eren is bent on using the Wall Titans to flatten the World, so he most likely does not want to use the power of the Founding Titan to turn all the Pure Titans in Shingashina + Connie's mom into humans; otherwise, the Wall Titans would turn into humans again too, and that would ruin his rumbling plan.

Regarding Eren and the mindless titans, control issues aside, I just don't think he cares.

Hange may be commander, but they are unfit for taking on as the head of the military. Same goes for Keith, though in this chapter he shows courage by stepping up to push the trainees to fight, I doubt he is willing to go back into a similar position as he was before as the Survey Corp's commander. Among the candidates, Armin may seem like a promising candidate, but aside from his proven intellect, just like Hange both do not possess the level of prowess of leading all three branches (four if count the training squad)of the military. More I think about it the "best" candidate in this list may surprisingly be Jean, but so far he hasnt been giving me the impression as someone who can take on such a massive role.

  WHY DID FLOCH ARREST THE VOLUNTEERS? 1,903 Responses

The fandom is fairly divided on Floch’s motives, with a three-way split that comes close to being even. The highest amount of respondents feel he is arresting the Volunteers because he doesn’t trust them based on past actions. In the middle, people feel that he doesn’t want to be associated with any non-Eldian people. And in third place, people felt that he doesn’t trust Yelena specifically, and is taking her group down with her.

As far as I've seen, Floch is on Eren's side, not Zeke's. So that would make Yelena, who hasn't heard about her boss and the euthanasia plan, dangerous as fuck. Even with that, Floch's following his own principles. He has different reasons than Eren, but he just needs the "devil" figure to project his own will.

He always knew Yelena and Zeke's intentions because of Eren, and now he's arresting them to prevent more trouble caused by them. I think Eren "trusts" and is working with Flcoh more than the fandom expect.

Because they conspired to sterilize/euthanize the Paradisians.

He's a completely inconsistent character whose personality and character motivations change at the drop of a hat in order to create conflict in the story.

He thinks Yelena can take over his position of the best Yeager fanboy and he can't have that.

He was never really on their side at all! Just like how Eren saw them - they were a means to an end, a useful tool but a dangerous one that could never really be trusted. OMG! Okay, it's happening! Everybody stay calm! Annie! Annie! Annie!

Annie got crystalized in chapter 33, and now she's out, 91 chapters later. Since 12 chapters are published in a year, we have been waiting for her (not including flasbacks and her just chilling in the crystal) 7 years and 7 months. I salute all the diehard Annie fans, you had a long wait.

Once again I have marked my calendar. May 9, 2012 - December 5, 2019. After 7 excruciating years our queen is FINALLY awake. This deserves a new record for longest amount of time a character has been comatose in real life. Thank GOD it's finally over I still can't believe it.

I'm a big fan of all of the smaller storylines coming together, hoping for everything to be wrapped up nicely and characters from different factions (i.e Hange, Annie, Historia) all coming together to address the rumbling.

It felt a little like a breather chapter, despite all the action. It was nice to slow down and get some character development for everyone.

“Everyone has a devil in them” is a great message. Hope they all team up and stop Eren. Very curious about what Annie will do!

The parallels to Trost arc were nice, but I felt like the endgame was finally amping up only to be put on hold.

Floch didn’t do anything particularly bad this chapter but every time I have to see his face my opinion of him becomes less favorable. When Jean said “so you lived...” I FELT that disappointment lol.

I love the Braun siblings interaction in this chap. And Nicole's "we'll try to get out of the forest" sends chills. I think that's one of the point ISTM is trying to get across.

Does Connie realise that if his mother was given one of the nine titan powers she would be made to fight? Getting one of the titan powers is very much a curse not a blessing (especially with the Jaw titan)

At this point the Eren/Gabi parallels are feeling a little overdone and forced.

If Gabi receives Eren’s Titan it will be the stupidest most disappointing thing to happen in this- no all of manga! Besides, what is the damn point of her “paralleling” Eren anyways? But the Sasha paralleling was even more gnarly YUCK!

It's true that the people of Paradis will benefit from this shit, but I highly disagree with any justification when it comes to Eren's horrible actions. GENOCIDE IS NEVER THE OPTION. I think Jean is disappointed too but he's trying his best to rationalize the crap Eren's carrying out for he still doesn't want to believe his friend is committing genocide. I expect he comes back to his senses soon otherwise I no longer will appreciate him as a character.

That "who are you most disappointed" will sadly be filled with Armin hate tbh. And in the end he was just wanting to avoid unnecessary conflict... tbh Anyone hating on Connie, Gabi and Armin doesn't seems to know how humans emotion work in helpless situations...

What Yams is doing to Connie is further proof he is ruining his main characters (the good ones) to make room for his precious Marley characters (the crappy ones)

Connie's regression and frustration was more and more visible since Sasha died. He's lost everyone close to him. I am happy to see him finally snap at Armin and go his own way. This was foreshadowed for a while now.

I hope Isayama sensei doesn't forget to include World Millitary's raid in the action. They already mention in some previous chapter by Zeke.

Quantity-wise, the chapter wasn't centered around Gabi, okay. But. BUT. Gabi got quite a few powerful scenes, very Gabi-centric scenes, and I'm not happy about that. I don't see how and why the fandom so easily forgave her for what she's done. Isayama drawing parallels between Gabi and Sasha was insulting and distasteful.

It is highly likely that this is the last time we are going to see Pure Titan mayhem in the series now that the Rumbling is taking place, so I think it was great to that focus in this chapter. I thought it was handled well, especially with Shadis's scenes, the parallel of the new recruits seeing the Pure Titans peaking through the hole of the fortress tower much like a similar scene in the Trost arc, the tragedy of seeing Pixis and Nile (two of the last remaining head honchos of the military not counting Hange and Shadis) as Pure Titans and getting killed off for good, and how characters like Armin and Jean fought those Pure Titans.  

WARMASTER FLOCKE, TO LEAD THE ARMIES OF ELDIA TO VICTORY! Haha no I guess not. I'm torn between Flocke, Jean, Eren, and Shadis. All could be good picks but all outcomes would have different implications on the story and what it means. I guess if I had to pick, it'll be Shadis or Eren for now and then perhaps Jean later when things have settled and they've grown up more.

I honestly can't keep up with how many faces Floch has.

With how the pacing is handled there's no way this is ending in 6 chapters. The real climax is Eren having to go against his friends because there's no way in hell Mikasa is allowing him to genocide kids

As heartbreaking as this chapter has been, I already had my hopes destroyed when 119 was released. Today has been the confirmation for two awesome characters, who fell because of the non-veteran rule. I don't know why I still hope to see Keith staying alive, but at least we got an awesome moment of his.

Characters are being balanced relatively well. Isayama's got a lot of characters and plot threads to deal with, and while Levi, Hange and Historia are getting less focus than I would like, I think he's doing a pretty good job of keeping each character relevant and giving them all some good arcs/ moments

I simply hate how cowardy the 104th is acting. It's clear they're only fighting in their own interest and are just pulling excuses after excuses for supporting Eren. At least Floch is honest about it.

Man, the 104th always been the group I care the less in the story, but this chapter they're being so annoying (apart from Mikasa). Well, I can forgive Connie because of everything he went through, but Jean... why are you saying this ""there was no other choice, eren is protecting us"" bs ? Nice of you to be complicit of mass genocide. (Yes, I know his face shows he's conflicted, but he still sides with eren) Also Armin... at least he's horrified at what's Eren's doing but when he said that if they don't kill Falco there would be no conflict with the warriors since Marley will be gone....that's just dumb. Their home and families are going to be destroyed, but ok Armin, go off. And getting into another serumbowl situation, with one of my fave uncounscious while the SC decides who will eat him... I don't like it. (I don't think Falco will be eaten tho, the whole thing raised many death flags on Connie)

I honestly wonder if titan shifting still works as it used to. I'm afraid of seeing Falco get eaten for nothing. Honestly I'm worried about Falco dying for nothing while people right over him as a pawn in general.

Quite interesting chapter. Had fun with it. Much, much slower paced than expected almost. But then again we need time to cover all this stuff. And I'm happy it all took place in the current rather than another flashback. Not really a fan of the Gabi stuff but it is what it is. The other character developments were quite nice. Reiner literally just falling asleep tho lol. Overall I guess I wouldn't say it's a "big" chapter but it is necessary to bridge what came before with whatever comes next. And at long last Annie is back, so that's GLORIOUS.

I really hated the Gabi-Sasha and Gabi-Eren parallels. I also still think Gabi was never needed in this story, in fact I don’t know how I’ll be able to stomach season 4. Ugh, the first half will be completely and utterly Gabified. Gabi in color and motion plus speaking, YUCK!  Anyways I hope that the next chapter will have an update on Hange, Levi, and Historia. And maybe Floch getting punched by Shadis that would be the Cherry on top.

It was an average chapter, not bad but nowhere near as good as the previous ones. Plus I'd appreciate if other characters, outside of Gabi, had more spotlight. Her arc and development is done, give more development and screentime to other characters such as Mikasa please.

Love getting to see thoughts from many different characters and where they stand. A lot of them are still left behind trying to rationalise things to make it emotionally palatable, or simply stuck not being able to accept the reality, whereas Gabi has kind of gone ahead and realised there's evil on both sides, and she's willing to kill Eren or work with him if she can best protect the people she cares about (eventually probably not just her friends and family either, but the outside Eldians as a whole).

This chapter felt like a nostalgia trip, but I wasn't in for the ride. It was a mess of short catching-up moments when I just want to pick Eren's brain. I want to see Levi and Hange alive or hear what Annie and Historia think about the events, but at the moment I don't care about even those storylines. I just want to know what the relationship between Ymir and Eren is now that the walls came down.

The first panel being Mr. Leonhart was a pretty strong indicator to me that Annie would be released in the last panel, and it was. I felt that to be extremly poetic, and the timing is good too. Another wildcard in the plot. Excellent.

Compared to the previous chapter, this one turned out to be very disappointing. I was excited to see the rumbling and getting a glimpse of Eren’s thoughts and feelings. But instead I got Reiner going to sleep, Gabi being paralleled to Eren (again) and Sasha, the 104th busy arguing over what to do with Falco instead of, you know, focusing on THE RUMBLING

Good chapter, but if S4 is the final season and airs Autumn 2020, and with a monthly release, curious as to how isayama might tie up these "last minute" plot threads such as the new developments with Connie and Falco.

violet really isn’t one to open up too deep to people, but that’s got a lot to do with the past she’s kind of running away from ! so if you’re her friend most of the stuff you know about her is probably surface stuff, but when she’s close to someone she can make that fact hard to realize ? she just has a way with making the people in her life feel important so it’s easy not to be focused on how much you know about her

Oh, I know the kink memes. *Elrond voice* I was there, Gandalf. But I also think many people who were involved in the discussion know of kinks. And there seems to be a bit of a tension between saying that kinks are acceptable to have and enjoy and saying that some kinks are rooted in harmful stereotypes. And sometimes people said the same things. Kinks are good, kinks are bad. So I guess there’s still an ongoing grappling with own kinks and others kinks and “Your Kink is not my Kink” approach of fandom sometimes gets lost.

I think there’s a bit of a mash up of several topics that might have made discussions even more charged? Perpetuating stereotypes in queer couples, the position of women enjoying slash ships, kink and kink shaming/ policing, the impact of fanfic and fanart on real life, freedom of creative engagement with topics VS criticism, plenty of interpersonal tension, heaps of yikes shared all around and probably even more things I didn’t see ALL mixed together into this little storm… It was too big to unravel and I feel people argued on different fronts, depending on your background and attitude… Lots of things probably don’t have anything to do with me, but it’s easier to have someone specific to make an example of…

I tought Destihellers was a mocking term people used to mean everyone shipping Destiel? I’ve been called a Destiheller too for doing nothing but shipping Destiel and I’m not Destiel be canon or else. ;3 (Though I’d like them to be canon. But my shipping exist independently of what happens in canon. I don’t need permission from canon or from actors or fellow fans to ship. I feel there was a shift in shippers interacting with canon where shippers now expect their ship to be canon and have people endorse it. There’s an intersection between canon/ people invovled in making the show and fans that hasn’t existed in that way when I got into fandom) In any case, I don’t know if the people who were invovled in the debate were part of a certain group within people shipping Destiel or anything like that. But I generally wouldn’t give anyone the title Destiheller. I still think we should be a bit more supportive of each other (no matter the ship we sail on).

I’m torn about missing LJ. Because spn_gossip and LJ rants (I don’t remember if that was actually the name) weren’t particularly inviting environments. I miss a time in fandom where people weren’t so eager to prove how up to date on latest issues they were by calling out people. Sometimes obsessively. I understand wanting to correct a narrative by proving what has actually been said instead of falsly following claims and misreported things by keeping track of receipts or whatever. But fact checking was certainly not a luxury that was granted to me in this whole fiasco *lol*

20-year-old Emanual Jackson, from Capitol Heights, was captured on surveillance video attacking law enforcements with a metal bat at the entrance of the Capitol during the violent insurrection on January 6th. Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died as a result of the attack.

On Monday (January 18th), Emanual turned himself in to the Metropolitan Police Department after the images and videos of him were shared by authorities. He admitted to "taking part in the violent protest, identified himself in video and photographs shown to him by law enforcement of himself, and confessed to perpetrating the violent conduct," according to the affidavit.

In the video, Emanual Jackson is seen repeatedly punching a Capitol police officer while trying to break into the federal building. Later, he was seen striking a group of Capitol & D.C. police officers with a metal baseball bat.

Emanual is facing a number of charges which include assault on a federal law enforcement officer with a dangerous weapon; knowingly engaging in any acts of physical violence against any person or property in any restricted building or grounds; and knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Scarpelli said in D.C. federal court Friday that Emanuel Jackson, 20, of Capitol Heights, was “a spoke in the wheel” of the attack whose contribution to the insurrection “cannot be understated.” He said videos show Jackson punching a Capitol Police officer who stood guard outside the Senate wing of the building, helping the mob overrun police and stampede inside.

“The defendant’s actions were incredibly dangerous, disabled law enforcement officers and enabled scores to enter the Capitol,” Scarpelli said.

U.S. Magistrate G. Michael Harvey agreed. Consequences could have been far worse but for the “quick-thinking and heroic acts of those inside as well as I imagine a great deal of luck,” he said before ordering Jackson held before trial.

Jackson’s youth, lack of any criminal history and “severely challenged” mental health factored into his ruling, Harvey said. Defense attorney Brandi Harden added that Jackson was recently homeless, living in a transition housing program and turned himself in. Harvey agreed to request that Jackson be held at a correctional treatment facility in a program for younger offenders.

However, several of the white rioters have either been released on house arrest (a 22-year-old woman was released in her mom's custody) or have been getting special treatment – like the one domestic terrorist who requested organic food and the judge allowed it.

On Twitter, folks sounded off on how Emanual is being treated compared to how the other domestic terrorists are getting a slap on the wrist for their involvement in the riot.

the feeling when you come back from two weeks of vacation and are required to solve SO MANY TRULY DISASTROUS THINGS bc it’s your job to notice them and we are too understaffed for anyone else to notice when things are TERRIBLY wrong and just GENERALLY NOT OKAY

*sorry for disappearing but, first i was on vacation for two weeks and then i had one of the most stressful weeks of my still very short life*

seriously, on the first day back i left the office 2 hours later than i intended to and i seriously played with the idea of just requesting another two weeks of bc. you know the moment you realise something terrible is about to happen and there is literally nothing you can do about it? that was my first day on a loop. every time i thought OKAY BUT AT LEAST IT CANNOT POSSIBLY GET ANY WORSE, our system said *HOLD MY BEER*

which is why i spent approximately the whole week on the phone with the company who created our campus management system:

on day 1 i reported that their shiny new feature is causing terrible mistakes and has some unforeseen side effects and this is exactly why we had all those long and exhausting conversation in December last year. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T REMEMBER??? YOU WERE THE ONE REQUESTING THAT UNNECESSARILY LONG MEETING!!!

(no, but literally, i reported it as a critical bug and their first response was to change the category to *FEATURE*. you just cannot make this stuff up *please insert some ugly sobbing*).

by day 3 someone FINALLY agreed that yes, maybe those side effects are worth looking into, and that yes, they are not documented anywhere, and that yes, they really DAMAGE MORE AND MORE DATASETS EACH DAY and that yes, maybe, someone should have taken this more seriously on day 1 WHEN I FIRST REPORTED IT USING THE HIGHEST RATING POSSIBLE.

on day 4 they agreed to correct it free of charge (although, that same evening i got a call telling me that no, they cannot correct it after all, as there are some parts which are hard-coded into the system, and no, none of my other 17 suggested solutions would take care of the problem - which *spoiler* was a lie).

on day 5 I became kind of desperate and asked them to just delete *IT* which would have meant a lot of work for me, but i could have handled it - as at least then, i wouldn’t have had to deal with a huge amount of data that found new and more creative ways to be even more wrong each day (*are you sure that thing hasn’t become sentient by accident, as it clearly shows at least one obvious sign of intelligent life?*) i got a no, and they suggested i edit several thousand data sets by hand instead. yeah, thanks but no thanks. obviously, they were appalled by me not following their brilliant solution.

on day 6 i was told my usual contact would be on vacation and in the very late afternoon i finally got a name to whom my case would be transferred. a woman i’ve never heard of, even though by now i know most ppl in that very special department of that even more special company.

on day 7 (today), after scrapping together each piece of my patience and professionalism, i phoned the number, and i gave that mysterious woman roughly the same information i gave her colleague on day 1. 3 hours later i had a script that put those beautifully monstrous functions into their own little appropriately big cages sandboxes, where - while they still exist and are perfectly being cared for on our data base, with plenty of enrichment (you can stop reporting us to PETA now, thank you very much) - at least they cannot roam freely and cause even more mischief. Another script corrected most of the mistakes caused by them throughout the past weeks, which still leaves me with roughly 60 data sets to correct manually on Monday. but 60 is a number i can happily live with.

if i could, and if i were important enough, i’d send some flowers and request a significant pay rise for that lady. gosh, she knows what she’s doing. talking to her was a LIFE CHANGING revelation. i’d love to ask her to run that place, even though she’s probably usually busy saving the world with those AWEsome programming skills of hers. i just. it felt like watching the Elite Four in some epic battle right after you just collected your Bulbasaur from Prof. Oak (which took you all week for some mysterious reason).

i’m pretty sure, the next time i’ll try to phone that number, it won’t exist anymore and everyone at the company will deny ever having heard the name of that woman.

1) everyones nice.

No. Everyone smiles hard to cover up whatever assholery theyre doing - if theyre supposed to be nice to you. Public people are the same as usual... except theres alot more shoving

2) everything about school

They don’t pay for school. Its free. Just like ours. Except private school. Just like ours

They are not MORE overworked in school nor do they study more. Their rules are much loser. And just like the states, teachers have no real authority- but unlike the states - the students do not fear repercussions. They can be touched though but thats more because japanese people think its fine to touch each other a lot - ya know. Just dont hug as an adult - but all other invading of some kind of private bubble is fine

3) SLURPING No thats not just a “it shows you love the food!” Bs. Just like the states, the people you hear disgustingly slurping just eat loud and are gross... imo... people here dont seem to think its gross but far more people eat like civilized humans and dont slurp everything from solids to actual liquids.

K like every time the past two days ive had to be near people slurping their fucking food and as a person who HATES hearing people eat... its why im bitching here. LETTUCE DOES NOT NEED SLURPED

4) just anything they call “culture” they used a pretty word to cover for “thats just the dumb thing we do here” its literally like if we said aggressively speed driving and cutting people off is new yorkers culture

Japan has a lot of history and traditions. But mostly they have a lot of bs that theyre just too stubborn to acknowledge and change so they lable it culture. Any changes they make are pretty much like when my great grandmother got a cell phone.

She only turned it on to charge it and make a phone call - leave a voicemail saying that she called - and then would turn it back off. It wasnt ever even on long enough for her to need to charge it.

But in her mind no one could complain that she didnt have one. And the only emergency in her mind was her needing to call you - not vice versa. She wouldnt use it for any other purpose and generally resented its existence. She hated watching anyone else use their cell phones to check the time or take pictures or play games or have lenthy conversations.

Yea. Thats basiclly japan with everything new. They have it. But they dont use it , and its possibilities scare them so the old ppl say its not allowed to be used unless the old people need to use it

An Open Letter about Racism and the Term Banana

Context

First Incident sometime last month i referred to myself as a banana and was told it was subtly racist. i *thought* i had adequately explained why it was not and why i identified as such. i had also explained that i would never actively call someone else a banana unless they also referred to themselves as such.

Second Incident it happened last night. to her defence, before i start, she was a bit drunk and i also know shes super passionate about this topic. however, i do have to say i think shes too “politically correct” sometimes to the point where she would be offended by how i view myself - but well get to that later. anyways, she was a bit drunk and we somehow came to the topic of xenophobia vs racism and that somehow spiraled into “reverse racism” and how it, in her opinion, doesnt exist, but i didnt agree. i mostly was content with letting the topic go but she really wanted to convince me otherwise. she got frustrated w me enough tho that she said something along the lines of “this is like how u call urself a banana and think its not racist and that its okay, but it is racist and its not okay” to which i yelled back “i talked to my asian american friends about this and they all tell me that you dont understand my experiences”

Part One - Our Conversation About Xenophobia, Racism and “Reverse Racism”

First, I want to say about the whole issue of xenophobia and “reverse racism”, maybe youre right. And certainly you believe so. Maybe white people cant experience racism. And i certainly understood your point about how its only the oppressed class or classes who could experience it. 

But I also believe that they can be oppressed in non-white dominated countries. Maybe you see it as discrimination and not racism. And that’s fine. But I do not claim to know everything that happens in the world, and so I cannot say for 100% certainty that they do not. 

Even if in a societal scale they “cannot” experience racism. Can you then say it doesnt happen on a personal level? If my moms telling me she rather me marry Chinese>Asian>White>Black, to me, that is racism not just “discrimination” or “xenophobia” (which was by ur definition a rejection of anyone whos different) why isnt it just “i rather u marry a chinese guy”? why are there tiers? 

Maybe you have a sound explaination for this. Maybe i still dont fully understand the subtle differences between the term racist, or xenophobic. Again, im more than willing to play with the idea im wrong. But its not something youre going to convince me of in a 15 minute half drunken conversation. 

Side Note: Did you know white europeans used to be enslaved by muslims? these are the stories we never hear about because being a victim at any point in time doesnt fit the narrative of white people always being on top or the narrative of whites being the “evil colonialists”.

I want to preface this by saying at the time I read what articles I could find, written by asian americans about how they either accepted or rejected this term. I also went to ask my asian american friends what they thought as well.

All my friends and I identify with the term banana. There are some, in the articles I read who do reject this term. And i will reiterate that I would never call someone a banana unless they themselves do and it comes up in conversation like “im such a banana.” “lmfao its fine we can be bananas together”. 

I remember you thought it wasnt a term I should use because “i will always be asian” and i cant “make myself white”. I have never wanted to be white. I was a pretty weird kid, and I always knew i was different from others, I was always very aware of the fact that I was Asian and I was always proud of it.  My Experiences from Canada

I know for some of my friends it was a shock learning that they were different from their peers. One example i can give is the comedian Joe Wang tells this story about how his son thinks hes white and was shocked to learn he was actually “yellow”.  But for me, anytime someone asked me where i was from, I would say “China” (at this point i didnt know the difference status Hong Kong held). Now, part of this I attribute to actually being born in Hong Kong and therefore saying i was from “China” was true to me. The other part is that I never really experienced racism. Then again, maybe i did and i was just too dense to realize.  But i never had the thing where kids would go “ewww whats that stuff ur eating”. Certainly i would get weird looks sometimes, but, to me it was just like i like eating broccoli but hate carrots, u think broccoli is gross but u love carrots. I never took it as a racial thing. I even remember i brought mooncakes once for my class to try and almost no one took me up on it but the teacher. The ones who did expressed they really didnt like like w their face. But i didnt feel bad. I remember carrying the box of mooncakes back to the car and telling my mom they didnt wanna try and immediately both of us said “oh well, more for us”.  I will say when I was young, I really wanted to have blond hair and blue eyes, curly hair even. I saw a friend and thought it was so pretty. But even as i imagined myself with blond hair and blue eyes, i still saw myself w asian features not white features. A little later I started watching anime and wanted purple eyes so i can say with certainty it wasnt a me wanting to me white thing. My Experiences in Hong Kong and with My Family in General 

Growing up my parents and my family back in Hong Kong, would always call me a “gwei mui”. From wikipedia, “Gwei [xxx] is a common Cantonese slang term for Westerners. In the absence of modifiers, it refers to white people and has a history of racially deprecatory and pejorative use, although it has been argued that it has since acquired a more neutral connotation. Cantonese speakers frequently use gwailou to refer to Westerners in general use, in a non-derogatory context, although whether this type of usage is offensive (i.e., an ethnic slur) is disputed by both Cantonese and Westerners alike”. Yes, in the past this word was racially charged, but in the present, its just another way to refer to westerners. I don’t really wanna get into it right now because theres a lot more to break down, but just know that its just a common way to refer to foreigners and the term “gwei mui” specifically refers to white girls. 

I grew up like this. And I grew up knowing that it was a very neutral term for people to call westerners and I also grew up being called such. Just as it was a fact that I was a girl, or that my moms name was Elsa, I was a gwei mui. 

Hong Kong is an international city. And there are foreigners everywhere. I remember walking into a store and before I even said anything, the shop assistants would ask “oh, youre from overseas right?” “yeah, how did you know?” “oh i can just tell by the way u carry yourself”. I had a friend tell me that she could tell i grew up overseas from the way i stood waiting in line, have ppl tell me they could tell by my make up or by how i dressed.  My “Thesis” on the Matter

In Hong Kong, and in my family and my extended family I was always the “white girl”. You once said that I couldnt be white no matter what, that i would always be asian. Can you tell my family that? Can you erase the fact that I was heavily influenced by western culture? I will say again, i never wanted to be white. And to be quite honest, when you said that I couldnt be white, and that i would always be asian, I felt angry. Angry that you could even imply I would want to be white, that i would want to be anything other than asian, that you assumed to know how i was feeling. 

But you need to understand, its not about “wanting to be white”, its about “not being asian enough”. You need to understand, that it never came from white communities, it came from my parents and my family back home. 

It was never racially motivated. It was just a fact. I’m currently 25 years old, I’m 5ft5(ish), I weigh about 117lbs, I was born a girl and identiy as such, I’m from Hong Kong, I grew up in Canada and i’m a banana. 

If we were to go back to what u were trying to explain about racism and xenophobia then you could make the argument that “gwei mui” and “banana” had xenophobic roots - but to tell me its racist? because im itching to be white? i thoroughly reject that and i find it offensive.  If we were to take this stance tho, that it had xenophobic roots, and is therefore xenophobic, I would say “yes, maybe. but if im reclaiming it and seeing it as acknowledgement that I am a mesh of two different cultures, who are you to tell me its wrong?” Furthermore, i would make the argument that the n-word most definitely had racial undertones. but black ppl proudly call themselves the n-word. Why cant I call myself a banana without people telling me im being racist.  The final reason on why that statement about how i will always be asian and never white disturbs me to the core is the way that statement lumps all asians together. And maybe you didnt mean it like this or didnt even notice. But my experiences are vastly different from my cousins who grew up in Hong Kong. And yes, by the colour of my skin i will always be asian. But the experiences that make up who I am and my personality are very Canadian, very western based. And to basically overlook that, is to overlook my existence and the existence of Asian Americans.  I know you would never do this, but to basically put all Asians in one category is the same mind that would white supremacists' would tell us to “go back to our country” not acknowledging that most of us were born or at least grew up here. 

Thoughts from My Asian American Friends. Like I said, I talked to this with a lot of my asian american friends. Most of which identified w the term banana and actively call themselves one. Others who don’t, but are not offended when others identify themselves as such.  They reiterated that the term banana was never about “wanting to be white” that it was never an issue of “want”. That it never came from white communities. It came from their families back in asia. That they were “too white” or “not asian enough”. As one friend put it, “i mean in honesty we say it cause we feel like we don't totally belong to our culture, it's not saying it in means to erase our race.” another friend added “ This is true. I’ve seen posts about struggles of other Asian Americans who feel like they’re too Asian to be accepted as an American but too American to be accepted as an Asian lol”. They also said that to deny us of calling ourselves bananas is to invalidate our experiences and our existence as asian americans. That we are not the same as our counterparts who grew up in asia. That we were heavily influenced by western culture. “ Lmao did they just forget that as much as Asian blood runs in you, your whole life has been in CA? For that person to say that to you feels like she’s already making you feel invalidated for being Asian AND Canadian”. Who are others, who are not asian americans, to tell us, asian americans, how we can or cannot identify ourselves. Who are non asian americans to tell us this is racist, to say that we “want” to be white when they dont understand how we feel at all. my one friend said and i quote, “yeah I don’t think calling myself a banana is racist, like dude I’m talking about myself and how I see myself, who tf are you to say anything”.

one friend said it played into the white savior narrative. that we dont know better and that not specifically you, but that in general white ppl are getting angry for us, trying to educate us and inform us because we dont know better.  Another friend agreed that it probably started off as a negative but then ppl accepted it cuz it made sense - similar to how gweilo started off as having negative connotations but is now just neutral. She said, “banana imo is one of those words that started off as something bad but gradually (some) people accepted it and started referring themselves as banana because it makes sense lol”.  Closing Statements

I’m not trying to make you feel bad and i honestly hope i dont. But I remember you telling me it was important to have these conversations so I hope this isnt too  uncomfortable. honestly tho, i dont even know if im ever going to send this to you or if youll read it.

But I really need you to understand where this comes from and where I’m coming from. If you dont agree, I can’t really change that. But to essentially call me racist for how identify myself with the things i struggle with, is 100% not okay. To tell me I’ll always be asian and to imply i shouldnt want to be white is 110% offensive. and to lump asian americans with asians is 100% denying our experiences. to tell me how i can and cannot see myself, is also 100% not your call, its mine. And it really hurt to know after our conversation last time you still thought i was ‘wrong’ that you thought I was being racist instead of truly respecting where it comes from.  At some point you might be able to gradually convince me ‘reverse racism’ doesnt exist. but there is no way in hell, you will convince me that how I or other asian americans see ourselves is the “wrong” way to see ourselves.

My life blows atm so imma rant

My boss got my hopes up at my job saying I can work till the end of the month but then relised that today was my end date and so while he was evaluating me for the season hes like theres alot of things you did that I didn't like like leaving the light on in that building the outher day, and when i told him it was because the person in charge of the shift told me the light wasnt a big deal and that it would take too much effort to open it up and fiddle with the alarm just to turn a light off,,,, like i already correct the person in charge on my shift constantantly because he was promoted instead of me, and litterally wasnt trained to do the 3ed shift part of the job where we work, while iv been doing it all year so ik what to do. Like now my boss boss takes the outher persons mistakes whos sposed to be in charge out on me? Like no him saying no we wont go turn the light off is absolutely the outher kids fault not mine. Not to mention i fucking hate the kid whos in charge of me and want him to get in trouble for how the shifts been run because hes so fucking braindead. But he probly wont be repromanded at all. And then I come home feeling like shit and my bfs getting mad at me cuz I " have no ambitions in life and make no effort to get a real job". Like sorry up until today you've been telling me to get a job quick just to hold me over until I find a good one,,,, so I litterally got a job at one of the food places in the collage down the street and now hes saying all I do is bump around to shitty part time places instead of calling back the outher places I applied to. Like I get it but like can you shut the fuck up and be happy im not a jobless bum?then hes ragging that im turning into my mom cuz the house is slightly messy because iv been so busy all week getting 3 hours of sleep and haven't had time to like pick up my laundry. But he doesn't see what if been doing all week as busy. So i have no excuse apparently. And he's saying he didn't know if he wants to be with me and all that shit and like yeah just fucking abandon me like everyone else has in my life. Like hes been with me for 5 years youd think hed understand me at this point and be a little more conserderate of me. Like yes theres clothes on the floor, I havent had time to pick them up,, fuck you. Ik ppl go through alot worse stuff but everyone has their own struggles and rn i feel like everything i do is pointless and im not good enough. Not to mention I litterally have 0 friends. And because of how my work has been all summer i only saw 3 ppl that also work 3ed with me. Ones a old lady, one is a dude that i fucking hate, and the others nice and all but we've never hung out outside of work so idk if ill ever see her agein after today so i dont even have anyone besides my bf
