Although I have an idea, what is the order of your favorite characters between JWCC and JWCT??

Jwcc:

1- Brooklynn. I don't know, I just love how savage she is. I love that she knows what she wants and that she always stands her ground (I was sooo team Brooklynn during the phone gate). And I relate so much to her struggles when it comes to her feeling like an outsider in social settings. I like the fact that she's kind of the "popular girl" archetype but introverted and genuinely socially akward at the same time, and not in a quirky way. I feel like a character like Brooklynn has rarely been done, if ever.

2- Kenji. I've always had a soft spot for the annoying boy no one can stand and Kenji fits the description to a t. I love him even more because they actually explained what had led him to be that way (he's not just annoying for the sake of it, it's merely the result of his father abandonment) and it just makes sense.

3- Yasmina: I really like her, and as much as I like Brooklynn, I think Yaz is the one who resembles me the most 😂 I found myself relating to her so many times. She's the least annoying and the most mature tbh.

4 - Darius: I really like him, and I like the storyline with his dad, it explains his fascination for everything jurassic well but he's at that place because he's often too one note for my liking. Like, he does struggle to put himself in other people shoes to understand them even when he's the one in the wrong and he is REALLY idealistic, sometimes to the detriment of actual people. But I like him 😂.

5 - Ben: Ok, don't kill me. Ben is really hard for me to place because I kinda not like him in some seasons but like him in others lol. If we're talking season 1 to 3 Ben, I find him annoying and too immature, it puts me off. The season I dislike him the most in is season 3 where he's really selfish and makes some really questionnable decisions, but I do like the storyline. Now, season 4-5 Ben? Love him, I'd place him above Darius and maybe even above Yaz.

6- Sammy: Sorry, but as an introvert Sammy is really too much for me even from behind my screen 😭 She struggles with respecting people's bondaries or straight up respecting people who don't share her worldview. And idk, she's too optimistic it puts me off sometimes 😭 I like her, I simply like her the least overall.

Now, Jwct

1 - Brooklynn : What can I say, I'm loyal 😂 No but I really love where they took her character because it doesn't come out of nowhere, the seeds of her "downfall" had already been planted in jwcc and I live for it. People who say she's not the same watched jwcc with their eyes closed I don't care 😭 And with all the trauma she's been through I feel even more for her, and I can't wait to see what the end of her story will be.

2 - Kenji: I absolutely love him in jwct, but for different reasons I guess. They turned the stereotypical narcissistic boy into a man who's desesperately trying to find light in the pit of darkness that his life has become and I feel so much for him. Idk, I relate to him so much and I just want him to get the good things he deserves.

3 - Ben: I love him so much in jwct. I find him funny but touching at the same time. What I will say might sound controversial but I think one of the reasons I like him so much more here is because Bumpy is not there. In jwcc he always was kinda detached from the group because he was glued to Bumpy so much that she had become part of his character, but jwct, by removing Bumpy for most of the season, allowed him to really find his place in the group and to developp an identity outside of Bumpy.

4 - Sammy: LOVE HER TOO. She's so much more...idk...balanced? She still has that optimistic personnality but she's allowed to be more nuanced and I love that for her. She's able to listen to others and to learn from her mistakes which is a big evolution when we look at jwcc (we can see this especially in her scenes with Yaz). So yeah, stan jwct Sammy.

5 - Yaz: I still like her, but I feel like her personnality took too much of a drastic turn. She kinda feels like a different character in a way and it's kind of a bummer because I liked her "harder" side. In season 2, especially, I feel like her character can be summarized with a single word (therapist), and that's never a good thing. But I like her because, let's be honest, they wrote her to be likable, but she's missing something.

6 - Darius: Little disclaimer, me putting him last doesn't mean I don't like him, I love them all in jwct, but someone has to be last 😭 I like him in season 1 and his inner conflict regarding Brook's death/his involvement in her demise. But in season 2 I really feel like he's just kinda there. And the way he confessed really left a bad taste in my mouth which affected my view of his character. The fact that he had the nerve to throw Kenji under the bus is messed up on so many levels and he has yet to redeem himself in my book. So I'm waiting to see where they'll take his character because this could simply be the foundation for a very interesting arc, and I hope that's the case.

If Marinette loses her memories in season 6

Honestly that might be a good thing.

Hear me out.

Amnesiac!Marinette would probably be a lot less toxic than current Marinette. Probably because she would be Marinette from Origins part 1.

Now if Alya used the kwagatama that she got in Illusthrater to help Marinette know everything about being Ladybug, it would make Marinette meet her series self, before she became Ladybug.

Now imagine herself talking to her other self. Imagine Ladybug telling amnesiac Marinette of all the things she did, I think amnesiac Marinette would probably call her out on some stuff she did.

Like all the stuff she did to keep girls away from Adrien or how she obsessively abused her powers for stupid things. Also all the lying and hypocrisy, not to forget how she completely failed at her mission and now there's an even worse villain around.

I feel like amnesiac!Marinette would approve of some of Ladybug's thinking and some others not entirely. Like keeping everyone in the dark about Monarch, his identity and Adrien, and how despite now having tons of friends she still chose to isolate herself in her secrets to protect 2 kids and then also thinking she has it terrible.

Like, amnesiac!Marinette would probably tell her other self that Adrien is the one without parents, Kagami is still stuck with her abusive mother and that Alix is stuck outside of time for possibly the rest of her life never able to stay with her family and friends and instead just having to comfort herself with her 2 futur selves and time travelling adventures, sure Alix takes it in stride, but I feel like it might come back later with the angst. So she (Ladybug) had it good in comparision.

Or how she would call out how she says Chat Noir has been there for her since the start but she can't do the same leading to him to leave his ring behind thrice. Also maybe calling her out on all the manipulation too.

I feel amnesiac!Marinette upon learning of everything she did from her Ladybug astral projection self from the kwagatama would be quite conflicted with her.

She wouldn't approve of her methods even if they did get some results. Some others kind of are a pattern to not repeat.

I would like to see Amnesiac!Marinette vowing to be better than that and actually tell the truth to people, because she owes them that much and the world shouldn't worship the magical terrorist who made their lives hell for a long time. Also Amnesiac!Marinette vowing to not be so clingy toward Adrien, I feel she would think some of her actions would be too weird and she would not do all the creepy stalkery stuff she did when learning about her love story, probably unhinged even for her back then.

I dunno but if Marinette would lose her memories it would seem like the perfect settup for her to drop some of her most unhealthy habits when learning about them. It would be Origins Marinette watching the 5 seasons of Miraculous Ladybug. And I think that would make her scared of herself a lot in some aspects.

She could be much better mentally and emotionally if she learned of some of her most toxic traits and vowing to not become like that, and just taking the positive like always thinking of a solution and trying to be a better friend.

Like there's a lot that Ladybug would say about herself, and I'm pretty sure she could be entirely truthfull with herself, after all it's herself, and then when she would be done would be called out by her own self about some very questionnables stuff that she did and being told that it's not ok.

Some character development that at this point is probably the only way I could see it happen as amnesiac!Marinette wouldn't be under all the stress, anxiety, ego that she developed while doing the job and pressure and weight of secrets that her current self was buried under so she would probably be in a healthier mindset to realise how much crap she pulled and being sorry for it and wanting to not repeat those mistakes.

Anyone up to see Marinette calling herself out? Marinette being salty toward herself would be interesting to watch.

I’ll be taking a few questions from the 100 questions for lolitas and omitting some of the more… personal questions.. along with some I don’t really find interesting! 2. Why did you start wearing lolita fashion?

In college, I made friends with people who wore lolita. I was completely enamoured by it and quickly bought items for my first coord! I never thought I could look so cute!

3. What’s your favourite genre/style of lolita?

Sweet and gothic have my heart!

4. Express in your own words, the ideal of your above answer.

I really love the 2010’s era of AP prints, so I suppose that’s my ideal, but it’s also a bit complicated. I love mixing in more fairykei aspects (my second J-fashion love) with my sweet coords which resulted in me getting that Nile Perch peignoir along with various other NP items lol… As far as gothic, I really love Vallee Lys’s style as well as Marble, so if you think about coords made with those brands, that’s my ideal I suppose! I am really unsure of how to describe it lmfao I just love frilly, whimsical and tailored elegance!

5. What is your favorite brand?

This is honestly a tough question. Not because I have so many favorites to choose from, but because I typically just buy what I like and have no brand loyalty. If I had to pick, it would probably be Baby, but I actually don’t own a lot from them. They’re my main source for bear items, so that’s probably why. I prefer AP’s 2010’s prints more than anything, but I am a bit underwhelmed by both of their more recent releases. That’s a convo for another time. Axes Femme is dropping a lot of cute releases that seem to catch my eye every time (Fluffy Bear, my love), so I think they're slooooooowly creepin to the top!

6. What is the best thing about being a lolita?

The freedom of expression and community! Growing up I wasn’t allowed to dress how I wanted, so it’s really nice to be able to feel cute the way *I* define it!

7. On the contrary, what is the worst?

The summer! The heat in the south is my worst enemy, but hey, that’s why we have blouseless coords! Also the random drama that crops up every few years because someone out there has a vendetta.

8. Do you have a favorite music genre or band?

My music taste is extremely varied. I could go on and on and show examples of everything, but that would take too long. Some bands/artists I listen to are Bring me the Horizon, Kendrick Lamar, HIM, The Home Team, Moe Shop, Megan Thee Stallion, King Gnu, Geoxor, Polyphia, Snail’s House and many many many other varied artists/genres. I really enjoy video game BGMs as well (currently listening to some)!

9. What’s your phone ringtone?

Okay, I just thought this one was really cute and kinda fun to explain. My ringtone is currently the normal battle theme from Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. My important contacts have their own ringtone, so if I hear the battle theme I know it’s some unknown caller and it’s like I'm preparing to fight or something, ya know? Gotta set the mood LOL Admittedly, this kinda has ruined the song for me, but small sacrifices. Fun fact: My family all have Mario related ringtones!

10. What are your hobbies?

Video games, traditional and digital art, reading, sewing/crafting, and consuming as much music as I can!

Heeseung || the devil, page of wands: Uhh… a little manipulative? He knows what to say to push people's buttons. Plus, might take his jokes a little too far sometimes, too. While said joke might be making someone uncomfortable, if he's not yet satisfied with it, he's not gonna stop. What's funny for him often isn't funny for others, and he might fail to notice that. It could also happen that others feels pressured to laugh at those jokes or go along with his antics just so they aren't the next victim. (mind you, I don't think he's malicious with it, necessarily… he may just lack the maturity or self-awareness to recognize what's reaaally happening)

Jay || the temperance, ace of pentacles: Jay might have a hard time stepping out of his comfort zone, and so he tries to mold people into what better fits said comfort zone. If he thinks something is the best of its kind (i.e.: a restaurant or a style of jeans), he will want everybody to have the same opinion or follow his own. Passive-aggressiveness might also be an issue here.

Jake || three of swords, ace of swords: Knows how to hit a raw nerve, and might do it more often than he should. He's the type to remember things/secrets a person has told him and use that against them later on, specially when they have hurt his feelings. Will bring up people's past mistakes, too, for sure… Plus, once you hurt him, he'll make sure you know it and acknowledge it!

Sunghoon || four of wands, eight of cups: Escapism; faking it. Fakes his personality and/or tastes and preferences in order to fit in. Would rather run than confront others over things that have upset him. Might also be the type to say one thing in front of the larger group of people, and then go and say another in private to someone he trusts.

Sunoo || wheel of fortune, ace of wands: Unpredictable. Always looking for the next big thing. He just isn't very commited to stuff, specially if something else more interesting or promising comes up. It may be hard to get him to follow through with an idea or plan - it's a "do it now or you may never actually do it" type of thing. He just loses interest very easily, it seems.

Jungwon || ace of pentacles, eight of swords: I wouldn't necessarily say close minded, but more like… short-sighted? He rejects things/ideas/people too fast upon a first impression, and doesn't give them the opportunity to unravel into something that, perhaps, he'd find really quite interesting. For example, if 7 years ago he found a 12-in-1 shampoo that worked for his needs, in those 7 years he has never accepted any other shampoo suggestion and will shit-talk all other options… you won't get him to change his mind bc, honestly, he doesn't care. It might be better for him and give him better results but, instead of considering that, he's thinking about NOT getting what this 12-in-1 provides for him right now. Besides that, he may also be a little material focused and reject some opportunities in order to focus on work, to save money, or simply because he thinks it's below himself.

Ni-ki || three of swords, king of wands: Lol… he plays the victim very well! Ni-ki knows how to use his acting skills to get what he wants, for sure… Dramatic. Pushy. Hates it when people don't pay attention to him - OR when they don't give him the amount of attention he thinks he deserves. "My way or the highway… unless you wanna hear me whine about it for a month, of course".

what i was also thinking of is that it could be mad in the passionate sense. that he is a "truth seeker no matter what" type of character, that he is ready to go to the end of the earth and to/use extreme means for advancing science even one small step forwards.

that he doesn't think any price to pay for science is ever too much to pay and he shouldn't go through with it. so people call him mad in the sense that he stops at nothing for the sake of furthering his researches/science.

and on a related not, maybe it's also he's mad with curiosity? he's too avid for knowledge and understanding stuff and he's never satisfied with how much he knows, so he's always looking further and deeper, and inevitably ends up crossing lines he, personally, cannot care less he crossed lol.

tho it seems it'd be only as long as he's the only one involved, and the only one who might end up paying the price for his thirst for knowledge. as said above, he clearly appears to draw the line at making other people collateral damage for his ambitions/dream/passion (unwillingly at the very least).

thinking about verde a bit, and i guess he's known as a mad scientist if that one cover chapter is to be trusted, but he seems to be pretty chill tbh?

like, during the representative battles when the vindice show they're here to kill and almost just did it, he immediately tells the kokuyo gang they could give up being his representative if they wanted? even when studying the curse must be one of the biggest mystery he came across because it's literally alien technology lol?

from memory he says he's not interested anymore if it turns out to be a life or death type of battles, but because of the rules his life would have never been in danger, so wouldn't it have been fitting for a mad scientist to demand from the kokuyo gang to stick it to the very end?

there're other moments when he's shown caring/worrying about them, and all around during the rainbow arc he was a very reasonable guy actually, even when science was at stake.

so like, what part of him is supposed to be mad really?? and what could he have done to earn himself that title even in the context of mafia?

Danganronpa: Characterization and Evolution across Perceptions and Interpretation.

Okay, so basically, this was supposed to be a reblog of a discussion of characters, but I felt the need to give my piece of mind. For context, view this one,

Since I’m in a talking, since everyone is giving their opinions on everything, why not join?

Fair warning though... this is gonna be long. Hope you have some pop-corn.

I’m not going to add anything about the ambiguous characters because everything was said... except for Junko and Mukuro.

I think I need to remind everyone that while all of those points about Junko and Mukuro are valid... every character is supposed to be a parody of certain stereotypes of characters. The average goody-two shoes protagonist, the violent brute with a moral code, the honorable warrior, the arrogant rich boy, the mysterious girl, the fat otaku, the manipulaitve lolita, ect.

And for Junko and Mukuro? Those are supposed to be the Ultimate Bad Guy and Lackey, respectively. People who parodies evil bad lords in fiction and those who mindlessly support them.

Now, that doersn’t mean that excuse what they’ve done, quite the opposite. Just knowing that those you hate parodies of stereotypes doesn’t mean you have to like or dislike them. Those who hate Junko and Mukuro has very good reasons to do so.  You can find a person entertaining (Celes), interesting (Monaca), have soft spot for them (Hiyoko and her backstory), BUT! Ultimately, the choice of liking or disliking them is up to you.

I’m simply saying that, all characters have various level of depthsdepths, depending of the support they appeared in as. For instance, in my opinion, Toko Fukawa is not that great of a character in Trigger Happy Havoc, despite her having the niche of a double personality and being a survivor. But her time in Ultra Despair Girls (her bonding with Komaru and her evolution alongside Syo) really managed to elevate her as one of the best characters. (And God knows she needed it).

The thing is, there’s a lot of factors that needs to be taken account. A visual novel game and a novel has a lot more time to developp some characters than an anime or a manga. Which is why the formers are overall considered as better than the latters. But it also depends of the context same support has. Hope vs Despair, Truth vs Lies, Present vs Future, Killing vs Saving, Talk vs Action, ect.

Aaaand it also depends on the author, who might like or dislike some characters and thus decides to either not give them that much material or backstory compared to others, or get rid of them first. Looking at Sayaka and Leon who were the first one that Kodaka designed, and were among the first victims because he was sick of seeing them.

Ouch. Way to please those who liked them.

An author is not perfect, as you can see. An author is, last time I checked, human. And every decision they make impacts their support no matter what they do. As a result, some characters ends up having the short end of the stick... or no stick at all. Looking at Bandai who barely got any character at all.

And let’s not forget that Koda isn’t the only scenarist in the DR Team. Just look at DR3, Killer Killer, the novel Togami, the visual novel Kirigiri Sou... yeah, sometimes, they make very, VERY questionnable tropes No spoilers, but look at the official wikias... you’re in for a doozy.

But nonetheless, it inspires others to make their own stories with their own goals in mind... and thus, they are bound not just to make the same mistakes, but to make their own.

FINALLY, we’re talking about LINUJ and his storytelling skills.

Now, I will say, LINUJ was able to use canon and make his story fit very well with the lore. Class 79 escaping the school, showing the Tragedy and its effects. The Ultimate Despair’s influence, who aren’t brainwashed this time around (even though in a realistic way, I do think that the brainwashing could have been good if it wasn’t the ONLY reason Junko gained her lackeys). The Divine Luck theme, which I believe is an interesting take considering luck has always been a stample of the story. Not to mention, the murders. Jesus, say whatever you want, but at least LINUJ knows how to surpass DR when it comes to gore.

Now, for the negative traits. To me, some characters are just... level DR3 when it comes to development. not kidding, Kizuna could have been interesting to work with despite her attitude. She could have been a Ruruka better developped. But no, that didn’t happen. Same thing for Nikei, who turns ourt to be just a manipulative bastard with an inferiority complex.

And the whole thing about Kanade. @a-student-out-of-time already explained why her being who she ended up was shitty, so let’s not beat what would be, at this point, a dead horse.

As well as some murders not being necessary. Poor Kanata deserved better, MUCH better than what she got. All because LINUJ wanted to copy the formula.

See what I mean? Everyone has a different approach with a different cast of characters. For me, I would never be able to write a killing game, because it would mean I would never make anyone suffer death by murder, even though I dislike some.

Like Haiji, Mitch, Kyosuke, Juzo, Ruruka, Kanade, Hiyoko, Byakuya, Kaito (the Japanese version), Kokichi (the American version), and so many others.

The one who can choose whatever you think of someone is yourself And if you’re an artist like a writer or on koihatsu... well, you can use your skills to show the portrait you’ve made of this character.

Whenever this portrait is good or bad is another debate entirely,.

Now, I know I’ve been on a long-ass tangent now, but let’s talk about my personal opinion on certain characters.

Makoto Naegi, for instance, is my favorite protagonist, if not my favorite character. Because he’s kind, understanding, and most of all, he didn’t give up in adversity. He’s someone I can relate to because of those traits and more. Not to mention, he can be shipped with many, MANY people because of his traits. That’s why people like myself or my good friend wesst1 on fanfiction, @vergilsama922 and @pyropsychiccollector works on either fanfictions, or in the latters case, an entire AU, with him paired with a MASSIVE amount of girls.

Yeah, I should probably go back to writing by now. Not just my fics, but this is for another time

Right. But with all of this said, I have to admit... he’s not the best protagonist in the franchise.

That title would belong to Hajime Hinata. Because he, in my opinion, is much more developped that Makoto. A talentless guy who craved to have something to be proud of, and being pressured by his inferiority complex to join a project dehumanizing him to make him represent something toxic... only to be used to represent the opposite. This, and many other factors, help him rise to the top.

At the opposite side of the spectrum... Kyosuke Munakata and Juzo Sakakura.

Those two were preszented as people who wanted to get rid of the corruption at HPA... and decided to kill all despairs during the Tragedy. In itself, Kyosuke especially, pose a potential good foil to Makoto, as he seems more realistic, and thinks that sometimes, in order to save people, you need to take another life. Which in itself is pretty messed up, but in a world when the people have no problem killing anyone, is not that morally grey and sometimes necessary in this context. Legitimate defense and such, even with brainwashing in play.

My problem with those is that, for the latter... well, he chose to save his own secret over the lives of billions. Even though he swore to help Kyosuke... and he lashes out at anyone because of it, specifically, the one who stopped Junko in the first place. Not to mention, what he did with Hajime.

And Kyosuke, well... we don’t see him kill Despairs because it was necessary. We see him killing his comrades. Yes, he was manipulated into hating the Despairs, and Chisa’s death set him ablaze... but his disregard of Makoto and co’s trauma due to the killing game and his inability to understand hope and despair (who are at the core human emotions), makes me question: what did he really want for Hope’s Peak Academy? Did he really wanted the good for everyone, or did he just wanted to sit on the headmaster’s chair, like he said in DR3 Despair?

That... that is pretty arrogant in my opinion. And with all of that, wesst1 and I took it into account, and decided to make those two bad guys.

Because his grandfather had instructed him to learn the Japanese instrument, Gin resented it for a long time ( despite being quite gifted ) but now that he thinks back to the days when he did enjoy holding the shamisen, the young man wants to hold it again. And actually call the instrument his hobby.

If we stay in his 'original lore', I would say he almost started a fight with his grandfather with innocent bystanders involved. He almost decided he did not care yet changed his mind in the very last second, telling Ryujin he would go with him so people wouldn't get hurt. The answer is not exactly an answer, I know. However, the choice happened in his head and Gin almost acted upon it ( which might have had resulted in more than a 'small' morally questionnable choice ). In his Tekken verse, it's easy haha: enter the tournament to find his mother ( and beat up some people along the way ).

Heat had started to feel a little bad that he didn't get Diggy anything but that never stopped his pandora's box amount of stuff hiding in well his box. He strutted over to Diggy and plopped a rather fancy looking pocket watch in her hand. "Sorry I couldn't find a chain but it works and its made of gold so yeah. Merry Christmas."

Diggy looked at the watch in silence for a brief moment, eyes open wide enough that they looked about ready to roll right out of their sockets. Her hearing receptors were still having some trouble processing what she’d just heard. The small robot opened her mouth and closed it a few times like a fish out of water, staring back and forth between the watch and Heat in complete bafflement.

“I, you - I- Ngheh- It was just- Why did you- How-Pshtb- Huh?! Gold???” Did he steal it from somewhere? Did he just find it on the ground? So many questions just churned in Diggy’s brain, and so did the many emotions linked to said questions, and the result was a slew of little noises and snippets of sentences with no coherent connection between them whatsoever.

“...Ah’ just gave ya’ a pack o’ gum for Asimov’s sake.” Diggy eventually spat out coherently, frowning a little bit. Chances were, he’d just pulled the first shiny thing from his box he’d found. But, nonetheless, the fact he’d immediately responded to her gift with a gift of his own was touching, and above all, it was that particular feeling that dominated the few questionnable elements about the gift in question.

“Who cares ‘bout the chain, it’s a butt-kickin’ gift.” Diggy plopped the watch into one of her “pockets” (i.e. one of the small compartments on her person) and then proceeded to do the logical thing. Basically, throwing herself at Heat and giving him a firm sideways hug, muffling into his blocky armor the timid sniffles and hiding her misty optics.

“Thanks a lot...” She softly muttered.

On Kamen Rider Faiz: Between Being the Most Perfect Series and Mere Chaos

When i started watching kamen rider faiz series, i initially thought it was potentially better than my all time favourite kamen rider kabuto. I was like, where have i been? Why all this time i only watched kabuto, which besides the overall good story, isnt as complex or realistic as faiz? So i got excited in both watching it and finishing it. But as i got to the end of the series and i finished it, my stagnant reaction was like: no😐 this is nothing better than kabuto. It is even worse than common childish unlikeable rider series. Which is very questionnable, cause it started off as superb!

To understand why faiz is perfect and disappointing at the same time it has to start with the contents itself.

Takumi Inui

Before i watched faiz every time i came accross it and saw this person i always thought he was a nice guy with justice heart or something, like a hero, but after i started watching everyone knows how my perception surely changed. The word gangster suits his outter personality more. Hes rude and doesnt care about most things. On top of that, we dont see his thoughts much, or life, which makes it as if hes.. well.. mysterious?—besides the fact hes the main figure?

Anyhow i still liked this character portrayed cause its fitting to the story and the plot, his character is enjoyable to watch cause it adds dimension and his flow is realistic. And this doesnt just happen in the start of him being unheroic hearted person, it continues throughout the series until the end, that he is nothing but dimensional character.

Sonoda Mari

I like this girls personality since first time she appeared. I truly dont like woman character that is just there just to be protected and become romance partner of the hero (typical western superheroes) and at same time i dont like woman character that is too much strong as if shes not in need of any help (typical feministic western superheroes). The thing about this girl is that shes just there—shes neither a standout nor is she a complementary. Shes just another character to make the story flows, her character is made so sincerely and realistically. I mean, shes just a girl. Shes not magical girl who is stronger than men or happens to be hero’s romance. With that kind of realistic character, shes truly likable. Her personality and portrayal is consistent throughout the series.

Yuji Kiba

Hes my favorite character in the series. I wont say if im him i will be like him, but surely he is what most humans are. He represents humans. It might not seem like that for other people, but throughout the series hes the sanest one with cold head, no dilemma, no contemplation, only determined turns. I feel like while watching i sometimes thought like “why is this character doing this? Why is that character doing that?” And yuji kiba was the only characted i never criticized—any decision he has is unquestionnable cause its always sane decision. Even to the end. Hes the only character i stanced whatever decision.

Except when in the end he fought with faiz and then what—he stanced human? Unacceptable.

Kusaka Masato

I can write thousand words essays on this guy on why i hate him so much (as a character :) ). I really liked the Kaixa form but because of this guy i cant again. Its not even just about his annoying, hateful personality (he needs mental help), its also about how the maker of the series actually decided to just put him NOT as secondary character—but in position of almost as same as main character. Sonoda Mari and Yuji Kiba? Just forget them, his position is same as Faiz in the series from the starting of his appearance. He started off as someone we think oh wow. I mean he goes to college (none other of them go to college), he is presidents of clubs, and moreover hes the chosen Kaixa? Wow. He must be something. Yes, he is something, the story starts to collapse by the time he appeared.

It raises question why he is placed almost as main character, but the simple answer would be that the story plot makes it like that. The maker somehow has to place him there, cause he is the maker’s inner dilemma.

Orphenocs

Orphenocs are the monsters, the ones that are not humans. They are said to be result of unknown rapid evolution of human being, but they dont look like human being. They look like monsters and they have powers that humans dont have, but they can turn into human forms.

The Story

To start it off, Faiz series is weird in ways that are.. well.. unique. We expect Rider gear to choose one person and just stick to that one person, instead of being able to be used by many people. That is the concept of rider gear we want to see, cause we want to see someone being the chosen one and admire them, or hate them in the case theyre the villain. Rider gears on faiz series are not like that, theyre mere killer tools instead of tool that determines “chosen one”. Anyone—humans or orphenocs—can just take the belt and wear them, become kamen rider, and thats it. Then whos the hero?

That is a very good question, cause faiz series contemplates about that throughout the series. Thats why we see characters that have very complex changes revealed time by time. So let me start.

The story started off with Takumi coming accross Sonoda Mari and they then met orphenocs, and Takumi happened to be able to transform to Faiz, and with that they just came back to each other again and again. This is a very good start, both have strong leads of the story that it makes you think probably they will dominate the whole story and they will eventually become together. This is what the story more or less indicated, and so we keep that in mind. Other figures started appearing and this far it was nice, Keitarou is the type that has justice and kind heart, Yuji Kiba as a sane person, Yuka as someone we would have empathy for, Kadoya which is unlikable both in personality and necessity of character in general; but hes there as a flawed complementary and the maker feels he must be “important” in the end of the series, the powerful Smart Brain. As long as it circles around the trio figures (Takumi, Mari, Keitarou) of orphenocs killer solving what is going on and discovering Smart Brain’s doings, it is all enjoyable and good.

The most uninteresting part about the story is Mari’s kindergarten past life. It must be because it was not introduced since start so we get excited upon whats happening now instead of minding Mari’s kindergarten people. I mean, in agito series the Akatsuki Gou was always something that makes us curious and when it was revealed, we finally feel fulfilled (i rate agito 6.5/10), but in this series even when it was revealed about her kindergarten people, theyre very uninteresting people with some of them having psycopathic tendency towards their own “kindergarten friends”. More than they are characters that are fresh and we can consider to stance and look forward to, theyre all dull, boring, and naturally have no good aura. And when i say it, i mean ALL of them. It was nice that many of them just vanished fast. The one that lasted was i think Delta, which is really really disappointing. It would be better if they dont starre Delta at all. I like Gatack as “strongest rider but not main figure” but Delta is just a pure no. No one wants to see lifeless Mari’s kindergarten people.

But instead of just get over them, we got imposed all the time by this kindergarten stuff by having Kusaka suddenly becoming someone that is starred the whole time. He is a very hateful, twisted character, and also smart. He standsout from Takumi in the way that Kusaka is trying to solve the problem from the very root, he is just smart. Takumi doesnt care about these stuffs. With that, started the era of the series having two main figures.

Nothing is wrong with two main figures, but Kusaka has very bad personality that it honestly is frustrating to watch him. He gets in the way of Takumi and Mari, he gets in the way of Takumi in general, he is just.. a main figure with bad personality. Who likes that? But that is not just it. Its not that Kusaka appeared and then Takumi looks neglected. Takumi was, in fact, neglected, because Kusaka would stand out everytime doing the whole stuff (in his annoying way) while Takumi most of the time just stayed silent. He didnt talk back when Kusaka said anything, he didnt do anything to support himself, he is just being there. He was no longer someone with thoughts, he hid his thoughts from the audience to extent we dont even know again what he thinks. He becomes so soft like a cat.

Why is this two main figures importat? Because Takumi turned out to be orphenoch.

I have suspicion that the maker is in fact, confused himself. I mean for me myself i dont mind about orphenocs. I dont think humans are any better than orphenocs, nor that orphenocs are any better than human. Its not about coexisting, its about if orphenocs win then orphenocs win, if humans win then humans win. This is the main reason i like yuji kiba. Will tell more later.

Kamen rider stories always center around fight of humans and monsters, and they always have to give reason as to why we should stance humans. On kabuto, humans are portrayed as nice, and so it happens on agito, and monsters are portaryed as inevitable evil. But on faiz, orphenocs are evoluted humans, they think like humans, they are in fact humans. With this kind of plot to begin with, there is really no solution to the story, and that is why the story is just a bunch of realistic events being put, about figures that change from this to that, about emotion of the figures being told. I really like this part of the story. I dont like how Takumi is silent, but I really like how he is actually an orphenoch, no, its not just a plot twist. Its just a story!

With the annoying changes happening from interesting story to dull kindergarten people appearance, from the fierce Takumi with harsh mouth to quiet Takumi which all the time gives the look of “it will really be better if i just vanish from this world”, from interesting adventure of the Trio with dynamic characteristics to story circling around disturbing Kusaka, the only consistent figure is Yuji Kiba. He had always stanced humans since he became orphenocs, he always believed that orphenocs and humans can coexist. Of course this is what common humans will think once they become orphenocs, unless you have unexplainable grudge towards humans like Yuka or Kadoya. But in general Yuji Kiba is what a sane human usually will be. But the part i like the most isnt him being sane despite of whats happening, it is the fact that the story has to somehow show him being hurt by humans, to prove humans are not as nice as he thought they are. Coexisting? What a joke. And in that instance, he changed. The whole time stancing the humans immediately turned into him leading the orphenocs. I just love that, hes not hopeless like Takumi nor he is disturbingly and unreasonably hateful like Kusaka. He keeps in mind what is fact and acts accordingly. Very plausable. I cant even blame him for hating on humans.

But besides the Yuji Kiba consistency, nothing left is to be liked out of the rest of the plot. It couldve ended goodly by portraying Takumi more and we could follow him to the end, but no, its just Kusaka and Kusaka until Yuji Kiba killed him. Such useless character no one wants to see, but in the same time he justifies the makers dilemma cause if Kusaka character didnt exist, it would seem like the maker was stancing for orphenocs. No, you dont do that in kamen rider series. But until the end i dont understand the makers true intention. I feel like for this level of series it requires a very smart person to write it, so is he trying to say that even humans can be annoying and orphenocs can be nice, or does he somehow have to make character that no matter what always stances human for no reason?

Kamen rider faiz is very realistic and complex and full of emotions and events, its not boring at all, but its inability to make the story continuously intriguing by serving what people will want to see (professionally! Not marketly or like this) it instead just serves what they want to serve, even if it means frustrating the audience and twisting the story as they want as such is switching the main figure.

Kamen rider faiz is, for its professionality (that beats other Kamen Rider series including Kabuto), 10/10. But for the rest of the thing. 5/10!

“Can you believe this?”

Sitting on the floor, Weyland closed his laptop, ran his hands through his hair and groaned before adjusting his glasses on his nose. He turned to Yutani, who was lying on the couch and had almost fallen asleep with a comic book in his hands.

“First time I talk to them in almost a month, and they spend the entire time nagging about my job, my friends, and my hair! Every fucking time it’s the same thing. I don’t know why I even bother at this point, they’re never going to be happy.”

Yutani stretched and turned his head to look at his friend. He had heard the same lines plenty of times before. Weyland was not wrong: every time he talked online with his parents the same thing happened, always the same frustrating routine with the same frustrating results. The aftermath was always a bit sad to see; Weyland trying to act like he was angry while, for the most part, it was easy to see that he was more sad and resigned than anything else.

(It always made Yutani wonder for a second if he would’ve had the same problems with his biological parents if they had been around. And every time he came to the conclusion that it did not matter in the slightest. He had other, better parents.)

“Couldn’t understand anything they said,” he said with a shrug. “They kept talking over each other and my German is a little rusty. They seemed to be in a good mood though?”

“I hate when they do that,” Weyland sighed. “Like I’m gonna do whatever they want if they speak fast enough and pretend to be all nice. My mom barely even reacted when I told her I had a girlfriend! And she’s the one who asked in the first place!”

Yutani chuckled.

“Maybe if you didn’t have a new one every time…”

“You’re not helping.”

Yutani sat up and gave a small apologetic smile, scooting aside as Weyland got up from the floor, came closer and flopped on the old couch next to him, still frowning.

“My dad still seems to think I’ll go back to school and become a doctor if he keeps insinuating I should enough times. And I don’t care if they try and make it sound like they’re joking, I’ll go insane if I have to hear about what they think of my hair again.”

He let out a heavy sigh and threw his head back, the fingers of his left hand drumming furiously on the armrest. As his friend stared at the ceiling, Yutani wished he could have done something to help, as he always did whenever Weyland got upset after talking to his parents. But he struggled to find the right words, so instead he listened and hoped it would help.

“They say they want me to be happy, and I believe them,” Weyland grumbled. “But seriously, sometimes it’s like they forget about it. It just... pisses me off. I wish I could just remind them, y’know? Do something shocking and get a reaction.”

“You could always marry Cara.“ Yutani smirked. “That’d shut them up for awhile.”

"Dude, that’s not happening.” Weyland rolled his eyes, but a thin smile appeared on his face. “I like her a lot, but it’s not that kind of relationship. You know how it is…”

Yutani shrugged and, for a second, was tempted to reply that, no, he very much didn’t. But that would have been petty and unhelpful and not what Weyland needed to hear right now, as amusing as Yutani thought it was. So he kept his thoughts to himself, and gave his friend a small pat on the shoulder. There had to be something that would make him feel better. He thought for a moment, then the thin smirk on his face turned into a grin.

A few minutes ago they had been laughing, Weyland in such a great mood that he could not stop fidgeting on his chair and Yutani trying his best to keep him still despite the fact that he could barely keep his own hands steady.

Just a few minutes ago Weyland had been drinking his beer (Yutani had lost track of the amount of bottles they had emptied), and Yutani had been smoking, the clipper in one hand and a joint in the other. They had laughed their asses off as Yutani slowly cut the hair from Weyland’s head, the long white blond locks tumbling to the floor where they formed a messy pile. It had seemed to make sense at the time, it had seemed funny. If Weyland’s parents wanted him to get a haircut, then he would get a haircut. That drastic change would shock them, and Weyland had laughed so much imagining and describing how they would react that he had been unable to breathe for almost a minute.

In all honesty, Yutani still thought it was funny as hell. But then, after a couple of joints most things usually were.

Unfortunately, now that it was over and that Weyland had just looked at himself in a mirror, he seemed to be having second thoughts.

“…It’s short.”

“Well, yeah,” Yutani snickered, showing the clipper still in his hand and putting it on the table. He gave Weyland’s head a small pat, marveling at the sensation of the soft fuzz under his fingers, and grinned. “You should touch it. Feels great.”

Weyland ran his hands along his scalp, but the feeling didn’t seem to please him at all: he furrowed his brow and his eyes widened as he seemed to realize what he had done. He turned his head and stared at Yutani, a look of dawning horror on his face.

“Yutani, it’s too short.”

Maybe this had not been such a great idea after all.

“It’s not that bad,” Yutani tried. “And it’ll grow back in a few months. Weeks, even.” He smiled. “Come on, think of the face you mom will make when she’ll see you.”

This did not seem to help, and Weyland let out a desperate groan and rested his head on the table, shivering when his forehead touched the cold surface.

“I shouldn’t have listened to you. Now I look like a moron and Cara is never going to stop laughing at me.”

Yutani rolled his eyes, pulled a chair toward him and sat next to his friend. “It’s not that bad. I’m sure she won’t laugh.” He thought for a second and added cautiously. “Not too much anyway.”

He looked at Weyland’s hair and tilted his head, thinking. “Maybe I could shave some cool pattern in it.” He touched Weyland’s hair again, petting it. “It’s so soft.”

Weyland slowly turned his head toward him, and his glare could have killed a man. Not Yutani though, even if he did flinch a little before drawing his hand back.

“You’re not shaving that stupid flag on my head, man,” Weyland grumbled.

Replying with a nod, Yutani leaned back on his chair. In his opinion, Weyland did not look so bad, although the change was a pretty drastic one. It was different, for sure, but having witnessed firsthand Raimi’s horrifying dreadlocks phase (a shortlived but entirely dreadful mistake), Yutani was sure that Weyland’s (sort-of) girlfriend would like it. And so would the handful of girls he liked to flirt with on a semi-regular basis.

“I think it looks fine,” he said, trying to be encouraging.

Somehow, the compliment only seemed to make Weyland feel worse. Maybe Raimi would find more comforting words to help.
