Note
How do you cope with “don’t trust your brain”? I can’t trust it at any time of day, due to the dysthymia.
For me, realizing that it is time-related for me really helped. I learned to identify those feelings in specific because of when they routinely occurred, and am now able to lower their internal priority.
With dysthymia that isn't going to be helpful, though.
But still, some of this probably will be at least a bit useful because the helpful part for me was less the time - that was just the factor that made it easiest to catch. It was mostly that identifying them was the first step. Like that part isn't always easy, the thoughts are REALLY COMPELLING, we assign them high priority because of their strength, so it's hard to say "Wait. These intense feelings I am having are not accurate They are a distortion of the facts. They are based on valid fears. However, the way they are currently all ganging up on me, or feel unusually intense, is not in proportion."
And that's sort of where I am now. Here's some stuff I do.
I respond by gently reminding myself that I have a condition that predisposes me, I tell myself it's okay to have the feelings, and then I say "I am going to do what is best for me in this moment while these thoughts upset me." And that can me hard as hell and I can't always do it. But I am trying and learning.
When I get the three o'clocksies as I call them (my schedule is often twisted around enough that they happen at 3, my equivalent of 8 or 9) I take a short bit to remind myself it's a distorted perception (or sometimes utterly false, like when I get the "everyone hates me"s), I challenge it gently, then try not to give it a chance to respond. I try not to argue with it because that doesn't help. And I just find something else to do or think about.
Maybe I move to something I know I like even if I don't want to, and give it a bit to see if I can switch gears. Maybe I say "well I'm ruined for a while, might as well do something hateful like get some water or gather some trash, or brush my teeth, because if I have to suffer I can at least suffer to make my future self a bit happier." That didn't come easy either. Occupying my hands AND my mind is important. I often can't turn the bad feelings volume down if I don't occupy my mind. Movies don't work, but podcasts/audiobooks and hand crafts or engaging phone games do. I have like sixteen I can choose from. (Your library may have audiobooks to borrow digitally btw. It's very cool.)
I ask for help, I ask for asks here a lot, I have some friends to talk with about fun things, my boyfriend is great. Doing imaginative stuff like discussing silly questions (the gryphon question I just got was like a perfect example, thanks!), what-ifs for our OCs or fanfic, or silly stuff like we watch a ghost hunting show and stop it to ask what we/our imaginary people would do, or a spooky movie or podcast or reality show and we raise a hand at the point where we would nope out. We're watching a cake show and we pause it to say what we would do or what winner we would pick. Having another person is so helpful, but you CAN do this with yourself. Write the answers out longhand or journal them on your phone (Journey app!). I will now often do this WHILE I AM CRYING, guys. It helps. Even if I think it won't. I did it during a goddamn tornado warning where for once it WAS very fucking close. Boyfriend was safe across town, I am unbelievably scared of storms and was in about the scariest one I've been in since a kid, and I was snot-crying on the phone and once we said our I love yous we just talked about stupid OC shit. And by god it got me through.
Reading aloud to my cats has helped before.
Like. Whatever it is that's crawling up your spine. It's so much about saying "look, I feel this way, and it is INTENSE, but I don't have to just sit with it; I can do other stuff WHILE I feel this way, I can engage with things ALSO, I can have other thoughts too." You don't have to end the thoughts by force. You can just let them run and move on as much as possible, think about other things as best you can. And with practice it DOES get easier. It does.
Another thing I have recently discovered is that I need TIME to have emotional reactions. Someone I love said something unintentionally SUPER HURTFUL a while ago, and y'all I was SO ANGRY. SO FURIOUS. And I realized before I could address the situation and tell them they crossed a line, I needed to make room to have this huge emotional response before acting, and they DIDN'T need to be part of that. Even though the intense feelings demanded I act, I didn't. With practice, amazingly, I have learned to give MYSELF the space we all talk about giving others to feel first, solve after. It took practice but I'm there. Once I cooled off, I realized not just why I reacted the way I did (specific past trauma) but why they said what they did (their own past trauma, inappropriately dumping it on me) and was able to talk it over with them in an empathetic way and it all smoothed out, with better boundaries now.
The having the emotional reaction thing may not work in some cases such as repetitive thoughts of, say, trauma, but when there is a precipitating event that just happened or I get blindsided by a trigger, it is really helpful to realize it's a reaction, probably a really understandable one, and I won't feel like this forever.
Also psych meds and specifically mood stabilizers are really great for me. I'm on two, and at first I had some internalized ableist shame around taking them because I didn't like how it implied I was like my toxic mom with her uncontrolled rapid cycling (not why she was toxic, but it made me feel like I was failing at being Not Like Her), but WOW having them has helped. The right meds. It can be hard to get that in place, but I did want to say, it really did help me.
I have also with my therapist built a safe place in my mind. This doesn't have to be boring! I have a floating island with cloud oceans, lovely ruins, amazing wildlife, and a badass wizard lair. And in it is a box for the horrible thoughts I can't deal with right now like the PTSD stuff, so it's contained when I'm not working with it, and a koi pond where I drop these glowing rocks I imagine the scary feelings going into, and then the water cleans them and turns them into pretty stones. Like, this was just stupidly useful and I never thought to do it in a way that wasn't boring before. So I can go there, now, with practice, for a quick visit to drop some bad stuff off. I also visit as I fall asleep and explore, to help make it easier to go there quickly. Doesn't work for everyone, has been good for me. Come to Magic Floating Islands! We have perytons and flying coelacanths!
Anyway, I don't know if that's helpful. Other folks might have ideas. But that is kind of where I'm at. It isn't perfect, doesn't always work, but I'm getting better because it's partially just a skill. You know? You're already a bit ahead of where you were initially, since you know it's a distorted pattern. There was a time before you realized that and it probably sucked even more, and there will be a time after this when you have one or two things to try that will suck a little less. It won't be a hundred percent, but you do move forward a bit at a time.
Hope that helps a little. 💕

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. mana -a gothic manwha. zion is a girl who forms a contract with a ghost and starts a business as a shaman. we follow her through different paranormal situations, learning a little bit about korean culture and superstition. the art is really good, the characters are very likeable and the little hunting adventures are ok, but... it feels very amateurish, the direction it wants to take isn't clear and the end is way too rushed. still, is a good fast reading and the fashion is serving and slaying absolute penis. 6/10
2. alichino -a gothic fantasy manga. alichinos are supernatural beings that feeds on human souls in order to become strong in exchange for a wish. tsugiri hates them, he's a "bond" (the purest soul above all) so he's been chased by humans and alichinos alike throughout all his life. the prettiest art I've ever seen like literally there's not a single bad panel or a sloppy silly drawing... the story is intriguing and it has lots of potential in exploring concepts or good and evil, loneliness and isolation BUT i only has three volumes and it's been discontinued so fuck our silly baka lives i guess. 9/10
3. fairy cube -gothic fantasy manga. this one is about the world of humans and the world of fairies and monsters and ravens and etc etc everything u mind can imagine. ian is a kid that can see fairies but no one ever believes him, he also can see another him, an ian with blue eyes and green hair that is focused on making his life miserable. it has 18 chapters, the lore is not complicated and it has various twist and turns that keep u entertained, so it is a very easy read... nothing too much. 6/10
4. vampire girl - well, this is a gorhic-ish manga abt vampires what do u expected. wana has fallen in love with this mysterious guy she often sees in the streets and after some time ahe musters up the courage to talk to him the next time she sees him. trigger warnings for blood, death and sexual assault. i liked this one a lot, the pacing and writing is really good, it doesn't feel heavy or boring and it flows nicely. as expected from this author, the art is also really pretty. i dont wanna spoil too much so this review is kinda vague, but this is because i really want u to read it and then come and complain to me abt the absolute mindfuck that is the ending. 9/10
5. R.i.p -a gothic-ish lolita manga. transylvanian rose (lmfao) is an angel bored of being in heaven so she travels down below where she encounters a boy commiting suicide. she finds him extremely cute so she rips off one of her wings and gives it to him in order to save him from eternal damnation. this one is short, funny, sweet and very fashionable. recommended for times when you're bored out of your mind and don't know what to do. also, god is a hot vkei man. 7/10
6. dokuhime -a gothic-ish lolita fantasy manga. poison princesses are made by taking a baby and feeding her poison little by little so they grew used to it. these girls are the kingdom's greatest weapons, a kiss, a tear, or even living in close proximity with them, will slowly kill you. this one was really intriguing, the plot is interesting and it builds anticipation and suspence nicely, the art, once again, is splendid like these bitches are serving looks after looks. HOWEVER.... this manga's fatal flaw is the depiction of this one tribal desert based kingdom. it is pretty bad and distasteful. 6/10
7. akusaga -kind of gothic-ish mystery manga. zen is the most wanted criminal of the country; he's cruel, has superhuman abilities and doesn't hesitate to kill and destroy everything that's gets in his way. this rebellious quality of his seems to attract all kinds of people, so he gets stuck with some companions along the way. ok... zen is saurrr pretty, that's why all bitches want him. this manga is very short, only 8 chapters, but thats enough to to flesh out his, and only his, story and character so you're left wishing the author had developed some other points, etc, etc. this one talk about war and class so u can expect some fucked up things that needed more exploring and questioning. 6/10
8. innocent -a gothic historical manga. this is the story of two siblings of the sanson family, a family of executioners, years prior to the french revolution. this manga is on the lengthier side with around 90 chapters, but it is still an easy read as the story has a pretty good flow. the art here is soooo pretty and the characters so intriguing !!! the story is a serious one so it hooks you up pretty easily but it still has its what the hell moments that helps break the tension here and there. it isn't a read for the faint of heart though as it is pretty guresome... but what we expected this is a story abt a man who killed around 3000 convicts. there's some moments where the author handles class, gender and race issues rather poorly though. this manga has a sequel but tbh it's not worth it so i recommend just reading this one. 8/10

jnpr/rwby ghost hunters AU
-their ghost hunting crew was small at first, jaune, ren, nora, and ruby, jaune created the team because of an experience he had when he was little in his ancestral home, he was friends with ruby, who’s their tech expert, she helped find ren and nora, nora was a ghost-nut, conspiracy theorist, but focused on ghosts, mainly because ren is sensitive to spirits. ren doesn’t exactly know when it started, but he was 5 years old when he first saw ghosts, his parents, watching him in the orphanage he met nora.
-yang joined quickly after ruby, worried about her and wanting to protect her, but quickly discovering that she’s fascinated by the work, they met pyrrha while investigating an old arena, that pyrrha had an experience in, she was one of the last people to sell out that stadium, being a credited mma fighter, she joined them because of an injury that kept her from competing any longer, and  a kinship with jaune,
-blake was a new hire, not really believing in the paranormal, but trying to avoid her ex, who she used to be dependent on, she quickly started believing though, in her first investigation with the team. the schnee family mansion. which is actually what made them famous, the experiences they gathered that night investigating, along with weiss schnee, who quickly became a financial backer, launched the RPI (remnant paranormal investigators) to investigate thousands of hauntings,

Naru’s Wimbledon Woman
“Your outward appearances are really similar, but you’re completely different on the inside.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t meet your expectations.”
“Yup. If your personality was even a little similar, I’d swoon.”
I’m saying a lot of rude things. I’m sorry. Forgive me. If I don’t do this right now, I won’t have the strength to stand.
“I already have enough.”
I laughed.
“Is there perhaps someone you like?”
When I asked, Naru seemed a bit surprised.
“Me?”
“I see… I guess there’s no one after all. For a moment, I thought there was someone in England you wanted to see.”
I’ll ask for Masako’s sake. I’m so kind.
“There’s a woman I’ve been chasing after for about five years now.”
“No way! Seriously?”
“...A woman in Wimbledon.”
“The Wimbledon of tennis?”
“Yes. Living in the attic of an old house.”
“How old is she? Is she a beautiful person?”
“I don’t know. Her age seems to be over eighty.”
...crestfallen.
“She is alive, right?”
Naru smiled slightly.
“I can get exceptionally clear data from her. She only appears around this time of the year, so I’m thinking about going to see her first thing when I get back home.”
...Good grief. He seems genuinely happy about it.
“...It would be nice to meet even once a year like that.”
I won’t say with whom.
“You should probably accept that you won’t be able to meet.”
“I know.”
His profile, exposed to the moon, was really similar. Enough to make me cry.
“I loved his beautiful smile.”
“I see.”
“It was really, really beautiful.”
“Yeah—”

The rare Ghost Hunt manga that found it's way to my country just slipped out of my hands. It's volume 8-11 which contains my favorite cases. It's second hand but are in a very good condition. It's very cheap too so a bimbo like me could buy it. It's in English too.
It's a very good bargain.
I was just one click away. But the picture turned grey.
It's OUT OF STOCK.
Just ONE click away but now it's gone.

Follower Recs
Stories I haven’t read yet, but clearly need to put on my ever-expanding List.
~*~
Welcome back queen [Thank you, it’s so lovely to be back!] if ur still doing follower recs I gotta recommend I would wait for a thousand years by bleuett it’s soooooooo good
[This one was actually recced to me by two different people, the other of whom said, “ Maybe I'm crying a little so I feel like a should recommend ‘I would wait for a thousand years’ by bleuett on ao3.”]... it’s def. on my List!
I would wait for a thousand years
by bleuett (T, 10k, wangxian)
Summary:  During the worst of winter, a traveler comes to stay at Lan Wangji's inn. He wears a red ribbon in his hair.
“Do you see the rabbit?” Wei Ying asks and points at the moon. “That’s the moon rabbit, he helps make Chang’e more immortality elixir. He keeps Chang’e company.”
“I do not wish the rabbit for company,” Lan Wangji says tightly. “You are the one I want by my side.”
“And I’m here, Lan Zhan. If you go to the moon, I’ll follow you, I’ll always be here now.”
~*~
I just read a great fic by aisthuu "every love story is a ghost story", didn't see it in your recs so wanted to recommend it! LWJ is a guqin composer and teacher, buys a cheap guqin off eBay which ends up being attached to WWX's spirit from canon era. It's bittersweet, LWJ deals with Lan's homophobia (implicit in a Lan way) and his feelings towards the ghost. This is author's only ao3 fic and honestly I don't remember how I stumbled upon it, but I'm happy I did and hope you will enjoy it too!  [I’ve recently read this one, and loved it!]
every love story is a ghost story
by aisthuu (M, 59k, wangxian, my bookmark)
Summary:  The man is in Lan Zhan’s bed. Did they—he begins to wonder, eyes trailing to where the man’s body lies under the blanket. Had Lan Zhan—?
Then the sleep-fog clears and Lan Zhan realizes that the young man isn’t quite opaque around the edges.
“You’re a spirit.”
The spirit narrows its eyes. “I’m so much more than that.”
(Lan Zhan buys a guqin off eBay for a suspiciously low price, only to find that it’s haunted. And now there’s a ghost in his bed.)
~*~
Ok so I absolutely have to rec "see you yesterday" by glyphic. It's a wip, but it's currently at 101k so there's a whole lot there, and it's terrible and wonderful and beautiful all at once. The way the backstory of canon events is adapted to the modern-with-cultivation setting is brilliant, and then there's the amnesia, and then there's the time loop. This fic lives permanently rent-free in my brain.
see you yesterday
by glyphic (M, 101k, wangxian, WIP)
Summary:
Wei Ying 21:09 hey lan zhan what’s the weirdest way youve died
Lan Zhan 21:11 Falling encyclopedias.
Wei Ying 21:12 omg no way that’s so rude turning books against you???
Lan Zhan 21:13 A betrayal I will never forget.
On Halloween night, an exiled demonic cultivator and a Lan disciple get stuck in a time-loop, find each other, and try to figure it all out.
~*~
If you are looking for recs for yourself I absolutely love (the complete!) story Just as the Snow Melts by draechali on AO3. It's a canon divergence where everyone lives, even WWX! ~ @airmidcelt
Just as the Snow Melts
by draechaeli (T, 67k, wangxian)
Summary:  Like a snowy mountain top in spring the residents of the Burial Mounds trickled down the mountain and joined the flow of society.
“I went to the Burial Mounds,” Lan WangJi said.
“Ah, yeah… I’m sorry Lan Zhan,” replied Wei WuXian, “I hadn’t thought anyone would come to visit. I am still not sure how it happened; I brought A-Yuan to Yiling to play by the river and then ended up somehow teaching a bunch of children swimming and writing along with him.”
~*~
Hello! It's come to my attention that you have not as yet read Grandmaster of Meme-onic Cultivation! Please do! It's the only thing that gave me joy during 2020 😆 like proper belly laughs and disney villain style cackling. It is a wip, and it is long but so so worth it!! The author has reworked the entire canon through these message crystals and still conveys complex characters despite the tricky format. It's just so good!! Highly highly recommend it! ❤ ~ @theladypeartree  [Oh!  I’ve been subscribed to this one, and know that @swaglexander-the-great is a reliable provider of Hilarity, so I’m excited for it to be finished!]
Grandmaster of Meme-onic Cultivation
by Hades_the_Blingking (T, 49k, wangxian, WIP)
Summary:  The Untamed universe is exactly the same, except everybody has magical crystals that have a suspiciously familiar messaging system. The story is pretty much the same as the show, except everyone lives!! (so minor changes).
or in which Wei WuXian tries his darndest to date Lan Zhan, Jiang Cheng possibly has a aneurysm, Jin ZiXuan is still the most awkward human alive, and Xue Yang makes me write some VERY cursed things. Written in chatfic format! :3
~*~
Chomrafy on AO3 deserves love and encouragement; she’s written a body of compact, poetic, and eloquent shortfics each of which can stand alone, but that comprise an intricately cross-referential and mostly internally-consistent universe. They’re grouped as chapters in works according to theme; for example, “in cupped hands” focuses upon Jin Ling and his second-generation baggage; “Departure in Autumn” portrays the last years of WWX’s first life. Follow the tag “Chomrafy’s MDZS shortfics.” [I don’t see this tag?]
in cupped hands
by chomrafy (G, 2k, wangxian)
Summary:  Of secrets, of futures, of love. A Jin Ling-centric collection of 200-word fics.
Ch.1: Jin Ling repays a debt (JL, JC, & WWX). Ch.2: Jin Ling and a ghost in the mirror. (JL & JYL) Ch.3: A matter of friends (JL & the other kids) Ch.4: In this house we don't keep dogs (JC & WWX) Ch.5: In the end, he remains silent (JL & uncles) Ch.6: A first night hunt, of sorts (JL & the other kids) Ch.7: Jin Ling, forgiving, forgetting (JL & LXC & JGY) Ch.8: Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling argue (JL, JC, & WWX) Ch.9: Jin Ling and his father (JL & JC) Ch.10: Jin Ling speaks up (JL, JC, & WWX) Ch.11: Jin Ling and a piece of home (JL, JC, & WWX)
Departure in Autumn
by chomrafy (not rated, 6k)
Summary:  Four perspectives. A steady march to the end.
Ch.1: Because if anything happens to them, Wen Qing would never be able to heal with these hands again. Ch.2: As long as this is still home, Jiang Yanli will wait as long as she needs to. Ch.3: Five times Jiang Cheng reaches for Wei Wuxian, one time he turns away. Ch.4: Whether the road is broad or narrow, bright or dark, they would have to keep walking. Wei Wuxian digs Wen Qing's grave.
~*~
Hello, hope all is going well. I don't have an ask, by I do have a recommendation. I read this fic a while ago and found it again. I just wanted to recommend this for everyone. Let me know what you think please. Thank you. [Oh!  This one’s in my To Read list, but  I’d forgotten about it.  Mmmm, fox!wwx and dragon!lwj.]
Ten miles of Lotus Flowers
by Yukirin_Snow
M, 274k, wangxian
Summary:  He was a mischievous fox spirit, wreaking havoc where he went, about to depart on a journey that would span centuries.
He was a heavenly prince, a proud dragon destined to ascend the throne to become emperor.
Neither expected their paths to collide over the span of three lives.
~*~
I forgot if it was your blog 😥 that recommended “Bestseller” (when Wei Wuxian writes the Xianxia cut-sleeve equivalent of Fifty Shades of Grey, based entirely on his experiences with Lan Wangji, he doesn’t expect it to become the next big hit) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/21528316/chapters/51318766)

Summary:  He had written the book to prove a point. It was never supposed to be a big thing, and he certainly never intended for everyone — Jiang Cheng, Zewu-Jun, the Juniors, literally everyone— to be reading about his sex life.
Oh God, he definitely needed to make sure Lan Zhan didn’t find out about this.
(Or, when Wei Wuxian writes the Xianxia cut-sleeve equivalent of Fifty Shades of Grey, based entirely on his experiences with Lan Wangji, he doesn’t expect it to become the next big hit).

Through the Dark: Season 13 Destiel Fic Part 9

or read on ao3
Dean aggressively jerks the car into park, and rips the keys out of the ignition, sending a silent apology to Baby.
Friggin Sam and his friggin brilliant ideas.
Beside him, Cas wordlessly slides out of the passenger seat, slamming the door as he goes.
Rage radiated off Dean as he watched him disappear through the door. He gripped the wheel tighter, squeezing his eyes shut.
This is all Sam's fault. It was his idea for them to go on this damn hunt in the first place.
He insisted, since Dean had barely left the house since Jack, and he hadn't been a hunt since that giant ass vamp nest. Insisted that some "alone time would do them good". So he promised to take care of Jack, and practically shoved them out the door.
Yeah, and some good it did them. They hadn't even spoken since their little screaming match, sitting the entire ride in silence.
And none of this would have even happened if Cas had jus-
Dean groaned, banging his hands against the wheel.
Who the hell did Cas think he was slamming Baby's door, thinking he's the one who’s allowed to be mad? After the stunt he just pulled?
Nope, that's it. They're talking, now.
(read the rest under the cut)
And with that, Dean was out of the car, stomping after Cas.
Dean shouts as soon as he spots him in the hall, and Cas doesn't even acknowledge that he heard.
Wow real mature, Dean thinks to himself. So stalks after him.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Dean questions grabbing his shoulder to spin him around.
"Going to find my child who I haven't seen in three days" Cas replies dripping with sarcasm.
He turned to leave, but Dean quickly pulled him back. Cas' levels him with an unimpressed look.
"Hey we aren't done with thi-"
"Oh I think we are" Cas scoffs bitterly, as he pushes out of Dean's grasp.
While he continued down the hall, Dean paused for a moment in an attempt to calm himself. With a sigh he tipped his head back, groaning when he noticed one of the bulbs above him flickering. Great, now he's gotta fix that.
Spotting the broken bulb did nothing to diminish the fire burning inside him, in fact, it only fueled it. So he quickly took off after Cas' retreating form.
"You pulled that stupid move Cas, we're talking about it. It was completely reckless, what the hell were y-"
"Reckless? You want to lecture me about reckless? After all of the insane things you've done over the ye-" Cas starts bitterly, not slowing his pace.
"-We aren't talking about the dumb shit I've done, we're talking about you, right here, right now. You could hav-"
"I had it under contro-"
"Really? So almost getting sliced in half i-"
"Don't be dramatic I was not going to ge-"
"Cas, that shifter was gon-"
"Dean, may I remind you that I am an angel. I was not go-"
"Oh you're an angel? Wow, not like that hasn't stopped anything from almost killing you befo-"
"Dean, the shifter is dead. I'm perfectly fine, I had it handle-"
"Yeah, having an angel blade almost shoved into your throat is handled" Dean grumbled.
Cas finally stopped walking. They somehow ended up by the stairs.
Dean stood, arms across his chest, as anger rolled off him in waves. While he waited for Cas' inevitable sarcastic retort, his gaze traveled to the overhead lights, watching them flicker.
Great it's probably the entire grid, not just one bulb. Crappy old wiring. Well, it could be worse, at least it can't be a ghost, now way ones getting in here anyway.
With a huff he fixed his eyes back on Cas. And something twisted low in Dean's stomach when Cas sighed, clearly exasperated.
The sound ignited the flames within him once more.
Does Cas even understand? Does he even realize? Does he even ca-
"Dean-" Cas began, through clenched teeth.
The flames burned, spreading like wildfire. Dean saw red.
And Dean was off, pacing wildly, voice rising.
"Ya know what? Angel or no angel it, doesn't matter Cas. The move you pulled was completely stupid. I told you to wait for me, and you didn't listen. No, you went in with some half cocked plan and the thing jumped you an-"
"Dean, I was perfectly fine. They surprised me, but I-"Cas attempted to cut him off, but he wasn't having it.
"We had a plan and you didn't stick to it. It would have worked i-"
"Dean, the things we do, rarely go according to plan. And we both know it wouldn't have worked, we were running out of time an-"
Dean groaned, angrily pulling at his hair. His heart racing in his chest.
Neither of them took notice of the lights above them as their anger bubbled over.
"Then we come up with a new plan, you don't run in there with some half assed idea. But no, you had to be reckless and stupid and risk y-" Dean yelled.
At that Cas spun around, fists clenched at his sides.
"Dean I was perfectly safe, yes it caught me momentarily off guard, yes I could have waited, but we we running out of time. It was the only option and I-"
"Cas you just can't risk yourself just because you thought it was the only optio-"
"Dean that's what we always do" Cas accused taking a step forward.
Dean's heart pounded against his chest.
"That move was stupid, even for u-"
"We've been in far more dire situations. We've all made dangerous choices, fleeting decisions in order to save people" Cas continued, voice rising as he inched closer.
Dean suddenly found it difficult to breathe, mind racing as his anger buzzed through him.
"Yeah that's the job Cas, but you just don't go sacrificing yourself for gods sake" Dean yelled matching his volume as the lights flashed undetected.
In the pause, Dean thought he might have heard a distant sound, but Cas let out a bitter laugh, recapturing his attention.
"Oh you're one to talk. More often than not, a hunt comes down to making a risky choice. More often than not, it's about putting yourself in harms wa-" Cas was closing in now, blue eyes pinning Dean in place.
Dean drowning in pure desperation and rage, trying to get Cas to hear him. They blinded him to reality, his mind only telling him to scream back at Cas, offering no further instruction. Logic had been thrown out the window.
"What, now you're using our bad decisions to justify acting like a dumbass? What good did all that shit do u-"
"Dean, if I hadn't done it, I'm quite sure you would have made the same move a second late-".
"Like hell I woul-"Dean shouted, echoing off the walls as his hands began to shake.
"We both know you would have. You taught me to get the job done, find a different way, no matter the cost, we always find a way. That's exactly what I did, what I've always done, what we've always done. So Dean, I don't understand why this time is any diffe-"
"Because I can’t lose you again!" Dean screamed, voice breaking.
And with a bang the room went black.
They stilled, eyes meeting in the dark. Sparks floated down from the bulbs above, serving as the only light.
Dean quickly tried to regain a sense of his surroundings, going numb when he realized he heard cry-Jack.
The sound he hea-
Guilt like Dean has never felt before quickly overtook him, as he sprinted down the steps into the war room, heart pounding. They followed the sound in the dark.
The kid was crying, and they were both too wrapped up in their stupid fucking fight to even hear.
The backup generators kicked on as he reached the the pack n play, Cas beating him with his angel "night vision. "
Cas hurriedly scooped up Jack, who quickly stopped crying upon seeing their faces.
"Da! Dee!" Jack bounced in Cas' arms, his tear stained cheeks being the only indicator he was just wailing his head off. Then he was babbling away, smile on his face, as Cas pressed his palm to his forehead, checking if something was wrong. Dean hovered close, trying to look for any physical issues, when Cas sighed in relief dropping his hand.
But, upon seeing his kid safe, Dean's mind clicked back into action.
Jack crying alon-Sam-where's Sam-the lights-why di-
"-wow Jack great job stopping their little domestic display" Sam laughed as he emerged from the kitchen.
Okay what the hell is going on.
"Wha-"
"Jack blew the lights. When his emotions become unstable, his powers begin to tap into other power sources. Hence the lights bursting. That's what we learned this weekend, right bud? Already happened twice so far, oh, we need a new microwave by the way" Sam shrugged nonchalantly as he smoothed Jack's hair.
"You left Ja-"
"Wait, you were in the kitchen, you left Jack alone in here, heard him crying and you didn't go ge-"
Cas started, only to be cut off by Dean's panic.
"Okay okay mister moms, first of all, I was two feet away in the kitchen. I did run in here to get Jack, but I saw you two in here having it out, and didn't want to interrupt. So I figured one of you would grab him, or Jack would shut you guys up on his own. I guess you weren't giving him the attention he expected when he spotted you two, so Jack took matters into his own hands" Sam laughed with a shrug.
Dean's head was spinning. But he knew Jack was safe, had another angel power thing to deal with, but safe. And Sam was safe, a pain in the ass, but safe. And Ca-
His eyes slowly trailed over to him, watching realization dawn on his face, remembering that they were just in the middle of a fight.
Their was a shift in the room, and Dean's stomach twisted as he realized what he had said, what he scr-
"-aaaaaaand I think that's our cue bud. So you guys finish your fight, then Dean can fix the lights of course, and then you can see your kid" Sam smiled as he quickly plucked Jack from Cas' arms, ignoring his protests.
Dean watched them disappear down the hall, as the flames died, taking the fight in him, with them. He slumped in on himself, finally giving in to his exhaustion. All that remained was fear, which quickly let consume him.
They stood in silence for a moment, setting Dean's mind in motion again.
God what the hell was he doing? Why did he have to get so damn angry, why can't he just ta-
"Dean I-"Cas whispered
He dared a glance at Cas who was studying him, eyes full of remorse. But whatever look was on Dean's face, immediately shut him up.
Fuck
Dean tried to gain control of his ragged breathing, searching for the words.
He took a shuttering breath.
"Cas, listen I- I just got you back. And of course losing you wa-was always hard, but last time...."Dean trailed off, voice raw.
Dean's mind flew back to the flames, he could feel the sting of the cold night air, smell the smoke, hear Jack wailing against his chest.
"I-I can't go through that again Cas. And now there's Jack too, and I-it was jus-it'll kil-I can't handle it, not again. Please, I can't plea-" Dean pleaded desperately.
And then suddenly Cas' arms wrapped around him, forehead pressed against it shoulder as Cas supported his dead weight.
Dean gripped at Cas' jacket as a sob racked through him. And Cas just squeezed him tightly, murmuring something Dean couldn't make out.
It was as if everything came crashing down at once. The three months he spend refusing to process Cas' death, the terror of raising Jack, the joy and confusion of Cas coming back, the fear and fragility of their new....well Dean didn't even really know what they were. But he knew he loved it, wanted it. All of it, the past nine months bearing down all at once.
He can't will it away. He can't force it back down and burry it deep within his stomach. He can't stop it. Can't control it.
Dean had finally broke.
Another sob forced it's way past his lips, and Cas squeezed him tighter, resting his chin on Dean's head.
God how completely pathetic he must look right now.
He's this messed up over some dumb routine hunt? Cas was right, they had obviously dealt with far worse, this hunt was nothing. And between the two of them they had each made more dangerous choices, than the one Cas made last night.
But when he saw Cas laying on that floor-
He can't lose him. He can't. Not now. Not after everything.
With a sniff, Dean forced himself to pull back, but Cas kept his hands on Dean's shoulder's holding him up just in case.
Dean pointedly kept his eyes trained on the floor, mind racing.
God he was pathetic.
Cas deserves better than this. Better than him.
He doesn't deserve to deal with Dean and all of his shit, he shouldn't have to. He and Jack both do. They deserve to have a home, and someone they can rely on, someone who can keep their crap together when it counts. Not someone who will fall apart and sob on their friggin shoulder.
Cas deserves someone better, some less broken.
Because Dean is broken, and he can't be fixed. He's just beyond repair an-
"-Dean" Cas' voice cuts through his thoughts.
Cas gently, tilted Dean's chin up, forcing him to look at him.
Dean sees nothing but guilt and sorrow swimming behind those wide blue eyes, and his heart clenches at the sight.
This is all Dean's fault if he hadn-
"Dean, I'm sorry. You're right, I don't know what I was thinking, it was a reckless move. I could have waited, we could have come up with something el-" Cas began softly.
And that seemed to snap Dean back to reality.
"Cas no-you did-you didn't do anything we normally wouldn't do-"Dean began finding his voice.
Cas shook his head, frown deepening and Dean's heart squeezed again.
Great now Cas is blaming himself for the entire thing, another thing Dean's fucked up.
"Cas look, I freaked out okay. It was a stupid move, I ain't denying that, but it wasn't like it was out of the ordinary-" Dean paused taking a shaky breath.
"But as soon as I-when I saw that bloo-you're blood. And that damn thing was hovering over you with the blad-and they had it in your-I thought I was too late, and that you wer-"Dean stops, words catching in his throat.
He feels the tears begin to prick in his eyes again, and Cas quickly swiped them away with his thumb.
Dean swallowed the lump in his throat, letting out a bitter laugh
"I'm sorry, crying over so damn hunt. God I'm pathetic, yo-.Cas, you deserve better than this. I'm just some broken nobody wh-"
Cas' breath hitched and an unreadable expression crossed his face.
Something new dropped deep in the pit of Dean's stomach.
Dean was right. Cas doesn't want him anymore, not after he lost it over some stupid hunt-oh who is he kidding. This isn't about the hunt, this is about Dean. About now that Cas has truly seen how fucked up, how much of a burden, how pathetic he is, he doesn't want him anymo-
Cas gently cupped the sides of Dean's face, forcing him to meet his gaze again.
"Dean, you are allowed to feel, allowed to get angry and scream. And you're allowed to reach your breaking point, and you're allowed to cry and want and need. These things do not make you pathetic, they make you human, they make you, you".
Dean's heart pounds in his chest, while he tries to look anywhere but Cas' eyes. It's too much, he doesn't des-
"So do not ever think for a second that I deserve better than you, because I believe I'm the one who is undeserving. You're a man who does everything out of love, who taught me how to love. And you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders out of the stubbornness and love within your heart. Which only makes you even more worthy of receiving love."
Dean felt his breath stall in his lungs,
"And I'm sorry if I haven't been clear this past month, but I love you Dean. I want you, you are all I have wanted for years. And I want this, here, with you and Jack, for as long as you'll have me. And I want all of you, everything, that makes you who you are. Because you are not some perfect machine in need of repairs, you are not broken Dean Winchester" Cas finished softly as tears rolled down his cheeks.
The fear raging within him had stilled, was replaced by a sense of love he had never felt before, which seemed to be the norm when it came to loving Cas. He always found new ways to make Dean's brain short circuit and this was no exception.
Cas wants-
Dean felt the air leave his lungs as he was struck with a realization, Cas' words sinking in.
Cas loved Dean, and he wanted to be with Dean, for as long as he'll have him. For forever, mayb-but one step at a time.
So slowly, with trembling fingers, he wiped away Cas' tears.
And as he looked into those familiar blue eyes, he made a choice. Because this was Cas. And he deserved more. So Dean was going to give him more.
So he takes a deep breath.
"Cas, I-I'm not the best at this kinda stuff, but I'm gonna try okay? Because you deserve to hear it. Because you deserve everything, love and happiness-whatever the hell you want. And if what you actually want is me, then you have me. Because you're the best damn thing that's ever happened to me, and I just can't believe that you want-but I-I want to believ-I want to believe that those things you said about me are true, that I'm worthy of love and deserve to want and all that. Because I love you, and I want to be with you as long as you'll have me. So if what you sai-what you see in me, is true. Then we would both get what we want, and I think after everything, we deserve it" Dean finished, voice shaking.
And the next thing Dean knew, Cas' lips were on his, hands cupping his face. Dean quickly wrapped his arms around his waist, deepening the kiss, as they exchanged whispered I love you's.
Eventually they pulled back foreheads resting together, breathing ragged. Then Cas caught his eyes, giving him a soft smile. A smile that said I'm sorry and I'm proud of you, that expressed everything Dean needed to hear, that Cas understood. Dean found himself easily grinning in return.
And a small flicker of hope, for Dean, for them, for what their life could be, ignited in his chest. They could have this, like really have this.
Of course a single conversation doesn't fix a lifetime of self-doubt and anxiety, that exists between the two of them. But it's a start.
So Dean pulls back, keeping his arms tight around Cas' waist.
"Well I'm glad we got that sorted out. But if you ever pull that self sacrificing bullshit again, I swear to god I'll kick your ass so hard it'll blast you back to the beginning of time, capiche?"
A smirk spreads across Cas' face, amusement dancing behind those blue eyes.
"Yes. I capiche"
And Dean barks out a laugh, shoving Cas' head away affectionately.
"You're a pain in the ass, you know that?"
"Yes, but I'm your pain in the ass" Cas smirks, pinching Dean's ass, for effect.
And Dean definitely doesn't squeak in surprise, and cause Cas to laugh. But Dean does shut him up with another kiss.
God he's gonna be the death of him, but the thought only makes Dean's heart swell.
"C'mon dumbass, lets go find our kid" Dean says with a fond eye roll.
"But what about the lig-"
"Fuck the lights, if Sam thought Jack bursting them up was so funny, then he can fix them. Now, let's go see if we can get Jack to laugh so hard, that he blows up Sam's blender"
"Oh, and here I thought I was the dumbass"
Another laugh rips through him as grabs his hand, tugging Cas down the hall.
And when Cas squeezes his hand back, a warmth washes over him.
Yeah, they were going to be just fine.

Black Clover SD volumes 2 & 3 have been released!
Well, they were released a week ago, but I finally found time to type this out.
These volumes complete Black Clover SD, and compile most (but not all) of the chapters that were made for Saikyo Jump.
The chapters contained in volume 2 are:
Chapter 6 – Protect Everyone’s Precious Christmas!!
Chapter 7 – Visit from a Hero!?
Chapter 8 – The Magic Racing Grand Prix!!
Chapter 9 – The Mystery of Clover Academy!!
While the chapters contained in volume 3 are:
Chapter 10 – Idiot Virus Panic!?
Chapter 11 – Showdown at the Mysterious Ghost Ship!!
Chapter 12 – Nightmare Rampage!? Battle in the World of Dreams!
Chapter 13 – The Road to the Wizard King!
Unfortunately, there are a few chapters that were released in Saikyo Jump that were not included in these volumes. These include:
The Magic Beasts chapter (preview images here) - This chapter featured Captain Jack. My heart goes out to Jack fans who will miss out on this.
The Hunting for Bugs chapter (preview images here) - This chapter featured Zora. But worry not Zora fans. Chapter 7 features Zora too!
A chapter where Asta meets a foreign prince named Atsa who looks just like him. I don’t have previews for that chapter because I was only just getting into Black Clover at that point and hadn’t made my blog, but from what I remember, that chapter looked exceptionally weird, so I don’t think we’re missing out on too much.
There may be more chapters that weren’t included, but these are the ones I am aware of.
Since chapters can't be uploaded to the new version of MangaDex yet, I will post Imgur links here and on Reddit as I translate the two volumes. I will also try to release chapters 4 and 5 from volume 1 in the coming days.

Okay folks! After all these years of loving Ono Fuyumi's Ghost Hunt-- watching the anime when it aired in 2006, reading all the manga, writing fic for the fandom for the last decade-- I'm finally (thank you to the beautiful souls who have painstakingly translated it) going straight to the source and reading the translated novels.
I think this will be something I'm going to really enjoy! I'm just, even after all this time, so in love with the story and the characters, learning anything new after this long is going to be like a Christmas gift to me :)
So I guess what this post boils down to is if you'd like to join me on this journey (however long it takes to read through the original 8 volumes and then the 2 sequels) I'll be sharing rambling text posts of my reactions...probably incoherent things about Naru's eyes honestly. Anyways, I'm off to start volume one!

Overall thoughts on V8? Assuming you didn't answer this already.
I meant to do a volume wrap up review but I got incredibly busy and it fell to the waste side. The thing about me judging RWBY I have to come at it from two angles or I won’t feel like I judged it appropriately. There’s the casual, first time seeing the episodes and seeing this through the lens as a casual watcher who probably only sees the episodes once or twice. But then there’s the other side to that coin. I review these episodes, write aus, theorize, check extended lore, listen to the music, etc; that means I have to go back and watch episodes several times for any given reason and that’s when you start noticing the holes or picking up on things you didn’t before.
As a casual watcher, I’d give this an 8/10. There’s plenty of moments where characters do things that got me excited and plot points I wanted explored. This volume actually gave a decent amount of things I wanted for quite some time and some things I didn’t know I needed. Certainly there are things I don’t like in this but I’m open and curious to see where RT takes their storie because it’s their story.
Okay, now as a someone who’s had to deep dive and take a step back multiple times for a variety of reasons. 6.5/10 maybe a 7/10 if I’m being generous. A lot of my problems with this volume are problems that aren’t new to RWBY and that’s just how surface layer portions of arcs are and how a variety of choices/bonds don’t exactly make sense with what we were previously shown, or they only make sense because the writers don’t want introduce other complexities even though they should be there realistically. I’ll give a couple examples of these and yes, I’m aware what I say doesn’t bother everyone but it bothers me.
Qrow was never angry at or brought up Robyn being the reason their airship crashed in the first place because she started the fight; which aids in Clover dying.
Emerald follows Cinder, not Salem. Even if Cinder is working under Salem, why would Emerald be so willingly to complete shift to the side that actively goes against Cinder? There’s been no grand revelation to make Emerald believe Cinder doesn’t give a damn about her. Leaving made sense because she was about to get tortured. Going full turncoat right now doesn’t. No change happened. Emerald always hated being near Salem but adored Cinder no matter the crimes and the show hasn’t done anything to switch that view point.
I’m happy Whitley and Weiss had a touching sibling moment that implies they’re okay and making/made up, but there was never a conversation about the actual problem and thoughts that had them at odds in the first place. Weiss saving his and Willow’s life shouldn’t be the thing that smooths things over. It would’ve been terrible if Weiss do something to save their life. Whitley helping Penny is okay I guess because he really had no reason to contribute but did anyways. Even so, a person doing a morally correct thing doesn’t automatically warrant the conflict between him and Weiss’s resolved.
We got Cinder’s backstory; it didn’t tell us anything about how she eventually came into contact with Salem. Honestly her back story felt more in line of her main goal through the series was an absolute freedom by the means of breaking down the systems that trapped and didn’t give a damn, rather than her quest for power. Yes you can argue gaining power means it’s easier to maintain her freedom to do whatever she wants but I personally think that’s a little off the mark when you gave her a story that involves her trapped by rules and time rather than being too physically weak to gain freedom.
This show has built up that the Schnee family has suffered various types of abuse because of Jacques and uses Weiss as a medium to build towards breaking free from that. Not just overcoming but confronting the abuse by cementing it’s place below you. We don’t really get that. There will never be a moment where the siblings and mother truly get to break out of Jacques grasps emotionally and then put him in his place because he’s dead! Yeah they never have to worry about him again but even last volume they showed Winter still having turmoil and being able to get strung along by him. We don’t even really know how Whitley perceived his father. It feels so lackluster. Then they care to mention how it’s Weiss’s idea to save him like it’s an empowering moment when in actuality, it would be against her character, values of a huntress, and morality to let a person die in cell when you’re the reason they’re in a cell! Letting him die in there would just terrible. I don’t even know why he wasn’t let out in that scene! He’s a coward! He’d follow their orders to save his skin. All he has to do is shut up and walk through a portal.
Ironwood and Oscar both knew they could remove that staff to use it and Atlas wouldn’t drop immediately. Why did nobody have any kind of compromise with one another since there’s nothing stopping them from using the staff for something and then putting it back? They had this morally gray thing going on which I liked but then they decided to make Ironwood go full evil. I’ve never had to say this before but the song he got in V7 and the character they made him be in V8 just don’t connect. I got upset listening to that song recently because I liked that Ironwood.
Clover’s importance. RT tried making a character who had no more than 9 minutes in the series and one meaningful line of dialogue into the cornerstone of a side plot. Clover is such a nothing character. Vine did more than Clover. They try to make him have such a profound impact to the people around him but we never see him bond with his team; Harriet specifically. We get one scene of Clover telling Qrow the kids are fortunate to have Qrow even if he doesn’t think so. First, I doubt Clover knows Qrow decided to get drunk in a ghost town and the kids nearly died and cellar while he did it so that compliment doesn’t hold much weight for me. Second, We see nothing meaningful between the two. V7 has a time skip and just expects viewers to be on board with Clover being this influential change on Qrow without showing anything outside of a witty remark and Clover flexing his semblance. I would’ve bought it more of Qrow almost relapsed and Clover stopped him then had a real meaningful conversation.
Ruby goes against Ironwood only to then want to do a plan that’s aligned to longer term thinking than even his, talks about how everyone should be working together, but then adds a part in her video to actively antagonize and vilify Ironwood. Afterwards, she wonders where everything went wrong and doesn’t think of a plan or do anything to immediately help either kingdom until the final hour between the ultimatum being made, to everything getting destroyed. The inciting incident was disagreeing Mantle should be left in favor of Atlas but the main character didn’t do anything to help Mantle 90% of the season and hindered Atlas’s safety up until the final plan.
Yang is used to be the devil’s advocate in a bunch of situations, but she’s wrong most of the time or her lines just don’t make any sense. They weren’t doing just fine before Atlas. They almost died every step of the way. The team didn’t beat a Leviathan; silver eyes and a robot take credit for that. Why would Blake think less of Yang for wanting to go save people immediately? Blake was never mad at anyone to begin with. Yang consistently calls out people for following orders as if it’s objectively wrong, but is never called out on the fact she hasn’t followed anybody’s orders but her own and added discourse to every situation. I get RT is making her ask questions because that’s what Raven told her to do, but all she’s really doing is picking fights and disobeying every order. Yang states to Ruby they accomplished more than they expected. That’s false, getting Oscar back is correcting a mistake caused by her own plan that she didn’t even complete.
It took 6 volumes before Yang had anything to do with the Summer Rose subplot again and 7 volumes before her and Ruby had a sister to sister conversations; 5 if you wanna count Yang telling Ruby to leave at the end of volume three. The reason I bring this up is because in V8 , they treat their argument as if it’s a big deal but then have every character say it wasn’t that big a deal; but then have two circle back to that conversation later after having neither character discuss to anybody that the argument actually did weigh on them. Yang doesn’t think about Ruby until she sees her again and the closest we get with Ruby is Blake reassuring her that people need her and how Blake admires her. I like that scene but it’s not the same as Ruby actually airing out the specific point that Yang said something that Ruby found hurtful. Vol8 in general people trying to comfort others but nobody ever actually addresses what made them uncomfortable to start with. Except Ren.
This one is a nitpicking but I’ll say it anyways. Penny getting hacked only served as a purpose to go to the vault, a thing Ironwood already wanted them to do. Nobody got her because she was hacked. You can’t even say her getting hacked is the leading factor to her actually dying because Penny became a vulnerable human afterwards that can’t be rebuilt. Pietro was gone, and already stated last volume he doesn’t have the aura to build Penny again. If she died as a robot then it’s still permanent death. No core, no Pietro, and no aura; hacking her was just to create a Hound reveal situation and make them go to the vault on a different set of terms. I’m not exactly upset with this, but I don’t understand why the extra steps. The Hound was hunting her anyways. I would’ve brought some kind of value if she hurt a friend and it caused them to potentially hinder the plan later on or remove them entirely. Penny could’ve rekt Yang and it only adds value to Yang getting one shot later. I don’t know. I’m rambling.
I think I’ve wasted enough people’s time. Honestly, I do like this volume. I’ve enjoyed a bunch of it. But there’s things that legitimately make me think it’s not as good others and makes V7 even worse.

will we be getting anyting spooky for this year? "ain't afraid of no ghost!" fed my halloween loving soul.
hi!!
I’m a little burnt out with writing right now, BUT I do have a piece from the Selkie Verse that’s a little bit ghostly/scary. I can’t remember if I posted it here already or not, but I’ll give it to you (again?)
It’s like 8k so be prepared!
Title: ember ghosts
Summary: Flash forces Peter, Ned, and MJ to go ghost hunting in a local cemetery. Peter decides to add a little pizzazz to this trip in the form of Resident Dead Hero Jack Murdock to get back at Flash. Things, as they are wont, go terribly wrong.
--------------
Matt’s new coat was white and incredibly heavy; Peter learned that last part upon dragging MJ and Ned over to catch Matt in the act of grooming it.
He barked at them and the volume of the sound locked Peter into place for a minute before he came back to himself and hustled in to go flop down next to Matt and ask him if he needed help first, and then secondly, if his dad was busy.
Matt felt for his chin and then jerked his face close.
“What business do you have with him?” he asked.
Stories about baby seals, obviously.
Matt tossed him away.
“You’re not borrowing my father’s spirit to scare Flash,” he said.
MJ and Ned came over to join the pleading session.
“But Mr. Murdock’s the biggest ghost ever,” Peter lamented.
“He’s a normal sized spirit, not a ghost,” Matt sniffed at him as he gathered up his fur rug from the floor and started picking through it in his lap.
The gesture he used was mesmerizing. He dragged the fur back the wrong way until he found something he didn’t like, then used the last three fingers on his hand to scrape at it until it was vanquished. He pulled his whole hand over the place again and carried on down the stripe he was making until he found another knot or bit of dirt or something to scratch at.
“Can I try?” Ned asked.
Matt’s face jerked his way and he dragged even more of the coat into his lap.
“No touching,” he said.
“I thought Foggy’s coat was the white one?” MJ asked.
Matt gathered his coat even further in offense.
“It will shed,” he said. “It is a new coat.”
“It’s baby fur,” Peter told the others. “Foggy said—”
He got a face full of baby fur and could now confirm that it was soft and fluffy and amazing. He could sleep in this.
“It’s a new coat,” Matt emphasized. “Annoying me will not unlock access to my old man.”
Boo on you, sealman.
“I’m gonna ask your mom then,” Peter declared.
He got yanked down before he was even all the way up.
Matt held his chin again.
“He’s a spirit,” he said. “And a hero. Say it with me.”
“He’s a spirit and a hero,” Peter repeated.
Matt shoved him away.
“If you ask him very nicely, he might be interested in having some time away from the church. But not too long. He can’t be away from Mum for too long, you hear?”
That was permission.
“We hear,” Peter promised. “Should we bring Sister Maggie an offering?”
Matt huffed and stood up. He left his pile of coat behind him and the urge to pet it behind his back was insurmountable. Peter met Ned and MJ’s eyes and bounced his brows. MJ shook her head.
Matt returned from the table and held something out towards the coat. MJ leaned forward and plucked it out of his hand.
“A comb?” she asked.
“Tell her its teeth are too wide,” Matt said. “Go get a bouquet of flowers—no roses, Peter. Go for hyssop if you can find it.”
Copy that.
“Be gone with you.”
“You’re my favorite teammate,” Peter said.
“I said begone,” Matt sniffed.
---

-
“You think he should have just kept it anyways?” MJ asked on the way to May’s friend Tonya’s place.
Ned took the comb from her and held it up to the sun.
“What do you think it’s made out of?” he asked.
Knowing the selkies? Probably teeth.
The other two stared at Peter.
He shrugged.
“Johnny says selkies are obsessed with guarding their teeth,” he said. “So maybe it’s whale bone or something.”
Ned huffed.
“Maybe it’s turtle shell,” he said.
Maybe.
“Why not roses?” MJ asked Peter.
Oh, well that was easy enough.
“There’s not really a kind of rose that isn’t a curse for Mr. Murdock,” he said. “It’s all friendship this, scorned lover that. And from the sounds of it, he doesn’t like them. Hyssop is a sacrifice flower, so you know. It’s an offering for both him and Sister Maggie.”
MJ tapped at her lip.
“Do you think we should cover our basis with a can of sardines, too?” she asked.
Well, it couldn’t hurt.
 ---
--
-
Tonya, upon learning that the flowers Peter was seeking were to be given to a ‘selkie and her young man’ (in her words) went a little overboard.
She stuffed the hyssop in as an afterthought among a tryptic of sunflowers in a bed of bursting blue cornflowers. She mused on a pink rose or two to top the whole thing off, until Peter informed her that the son of the recipients had warned against it.
She said hollyhock would have to do, and then she gave Peter a basket of herbs for drying back home. She said to leave them outside when he went in to talk to the selkie.
Tonya’s apprentice said nothing the whole time and stared at Peter like he was scum while she snipped the low leaves off the stems of black-eyed susans. Peter resolutely didn’t look at her or her fancy, pale-eyed familiar.
She was a poser, anyways.
“Tell me how it goes,” Tonya hummed, draping herself across the desk and humming. “I wish I could bag a selkie. Imagine it, Missy. Strong handsome man comes up from the banks and—”
“The banks of the Hudson, Ms. Rice?” Missy said scathingly.
Tonya considered this then shrugged.
“He’s shower first,” she said.
Peter and the others said bye.

Sister Maggie was suspicious of the flowers. But to be fair, she was suspicious of pretty much everything. She accepted the comb back much more comfortably.
“You want Jackie?” she asked once that was done.
“Yes, ma’am,” Peter said.
“What for?”
A reckoning.
“One of our classmates is a jerk,” MJ said. “He’s forcing everyone in our club to go ghost-hunting with him even though no one wants to. So we thought we’d give him a run for his money, but we didn’t want to like, disturb anyone or raise the dead or whatever.”
Sister Maggie’s eyebrow arched and Peter swore that she was going to start in for a lecture. He braced himself.
It did not come.
“That’s considerate of you,” she said instead. “How long do you need him for?”
“Like, just a few hours? Fourish?” MJ said.
“Let me ask him,” Sister Maggie said. “I think he’ll be interested, he’s been rolling balls back to the wains all day. It’s only fun for the first five times.”

Mr. Murdock was a good four inches taller than Matt and around forty or fifty pounds heavier. He looked like he could carry all the babies at St. Agnes’s all at the same time if he wanted to. But, having seen the guy in action (i.e. hopelessly lost in the tunnels of the great seanchaidh), Peter now knew that he was kind of a St. Bernard burdened with a troublesome wife and son.
“Have fun,” Sister Maggie said.
Mr. Murdock huffed at her and said that he ‘shan’t’ and it made her laugh as she closed the door behind them all.
“I’m not a ghost,” he told Peter, ignoring the other two’s shock and awe.
“A spirit,” Peter said. “Yeah, I know. But Flash is a dick and you don’t like bullies, right?”
Mr. Murdock’s jaw worked.
“What kind of bully, now?” he asked.
“He calls us names and talks shit behind our backs and runs into me on purpose in the hall during passing period,” Peter said.
“Easy fix for that,” Matt’s dad said with a hand wave.
“Mr. Murdock, I can’t fight him. I’ll break him in half,” Peter said. “Fighting is only for spiders.”
Mr. Murdock did not understand. That was okay, he and Matt only understood the language of hitting people. It was genetic.
“If you can just like, do the glowy thing right behind him tonight when we go to this crypt, that would be super helpful,” Peter said.
“You glow?” Ned asked Mr. Murdock.
Mr. Murdock was not convinced.
“How will me standing over a guy get him to stop bullying you?” he asked.
That…was maybe a fair point.
“It’ll scare him,” Ned said. “And it’ll be all his fault and everyone will blame him and he’ll feel stupid for having made everyone go along with his dumb idea.”
Mr. Murdock considered him and then looked back to Peter.
“Just go with it,” Peter said. “It’s a teenager thing. It’s how we keep each other humble.”
 ---
--
-
Mr. Murdock didn’t want to wait with them until nightfall. He wanted to be with Matt. That was his second favorite place to be, apparently, after hanging around Sister Maggie, but Peter got the feeling that Matt would talk Mr. Murdock out of some good, honest revenge and into some Catholic guilt if they were stuck together. So he gave him the next best thing.
Foggy was basically a vengeful spirit.
He laughed really hard at the idea of Mr. Murdock going around scaring kids in a cemetery.
“No, no,” he said. “Here, you must—Jack, can you hold things?”
Peter snapped his head back to Mr. Murdock.
“Some,” Mr. Murdock said.
“How much can you lift?” Foggy asked.
Mr. Murdock squinted at him.
“I don’t like the question,” he said.
Foggy abandoned them all to go dig through one of his kitchen drawers. He came back with tiny bottle and held it out to Peter.
“Mix it with some lamp oil,” he said.
Peter took the bottle.
“What is it?” he asked.
“Ask not what you don’t want the answer to,” Foggy said. “Just mixy-mix, boyo. Here, I’ve even got a lantern around here somewhere. Jack, we need to dress you for the part.”
Peter paused and turned to look up at Mr. Murdock’s dark eyes and thick hair.
Dress? Him?
You could dress a spirit?
“Why not?” Foggy said. “You, my dear sir, need a coat and a flatcap.”
Mr. Murdock’s whole expression dropped.
“I’m not playing some ghostly lighthouse man in the middle of New York City,” he said.
“You are,” Foggy said seriously. “For your people, Jack. Think about your people. And fix that accent, I know you’ve got a brogue in you.”
Peter took Mr. Murdock home with him when he and the others split off to reconvene at the cemetery at 8 o’clock. Mr. Murdock rode the train like a champ. It was cramped from the rush hour traffic and Peter entertained himself by watching Mr. Murdock lay his hands tenderly on top of those belonging to douchebags who were plenty tall enough to hold onto the upper bar but who couldn’t be assed to look away from their phones to realize this.
One guy yelped at Mr. Murdock’s touch on his knuckles and ripped his hand off, only to see nothing there. Everyone around him stared at him.
He coughed and reached up for the overhead rail.
Mr. Murdock abandoned him to squeeze through the carriage to the back. He found a pregnant woman standing beside a group of teenagers all listening to music. Peter watched as he inspected the lady’s phone in her hand and then her face. He tapped on the top of the phone so it fell right out of her loose grip, and the woman jumped. The kids all startled at the sound of the phone hitting the ground and two jumped up to pick it up for her. One offered her his seat.
She thanked them and carefully, carefully sat down.
Mr. Murdock watched this with no expression.
Peter swallowed a giggle.
Jonathan ‘Jack’ Murdock. Lighthouse Ghost Impersonator and Subway Manners Enforcer.

-
“Oh, hey there, long time no see,” May said to Mr. Murdock when Peter got home. “You’re going with Pete and the others tonight?”
Mr. Murdock said nothing.
Peter recounted his poltergeist from earlier for him. May thought it was just delightful.
“I told him to take Johnny,” she said. “But you might be even better.”
“They should just fight it out,” Mr. Murdock said.
“Mm. School authorities won’t go for it,” May said. “So I’m afraid we must stoop to witchcraft.”
 ---
--
-
Mr. Murdock didn’t know the full glory of Youtube, so Peter spent the next few hours snacking and showing him clips of old vines. Then, when it was time to go, he turned to google how to use an oil lamp. Mr. Murdock watched him struggle for a good five minutes before reaching over him and showing him how.
“Did you and Matt not have electricity in Ireland?” Peter asked him.
Mr. Murdock huffed.
“No, I just uh. I guess I had an interest in maritime shit since I was a kid.”
Ohhh.
“Is that how you met Sister Maggie?” Peter asked.
Mr. Murdock’s lip quirked up a little.
“No,” he said. “But we got there anyways, didn’t we?”
 ---
--
-
“Do you not like roses?” Peter asked him on the way to the train station.
“They all smell like soap,” Mr. Murdock said as he followed Peter down the steps to the station. He was wearing the hat that Foggy had impressed on him. It was a strange thing; Foggy had marked it with a piece of chalk under the brim before handing it over and it seemed to have made it ghost-apparel. He didn’t have a big scary coat, but he did have a scarf and between that and the hat and the lantern, Mr. Murdock was plenty old-timey lighthouse man.
“Not all of them,” Peter said. “Some smell like lemon.”
“That’s what they want you to think,” Mr. Murdock said over the heads of folks by the train. “S’all soap.”

“Did you every hunt for ghosts when you were a kid?” Peter asked when they were approaching the gates of the meeting place. May had given him a bag full of offerings to place on graves when people he was with weren’t looking. Some mandarin oranges and little bouquets of lavender and zinnias with sprigs of baby’s breath. They were pretty. Peter had something like twenty in among the fruit.
“No, the dead never bothered me half as much as the living,” Mr. Murdock said.
That sounded kind of angsty.
“How did you become a hero?” Peter asked.
“Kind of a long, boring story,” Mr. Murdock said. “The short of it, I guess, is that I did a lot of shit for the fae and they appreciated it.”
“Johnny’s starstruck of you,” Peter pointed out. “He thinks you’re like, super cool. He told me you smell really good.”
Mr. Murdock glanced down at him.
“It’s a sign of status for the fae to be attached to a hero,” he said.
Oh???
“Am I a hero? Does Johnny get a boost from being with me?” Peter asked.
Mr. Murdock shrugged.
“You’re both pretty young to be able to know or tell,” he said. “And you’re a witch. So unless you’re a hero-witch, I got nothin’ for you.”
Ah, well. It was worth a shot.
“There’s Ned, that’s our cue. Here, you can take the lantern. I’ll point Flash out to you,” Peter said.
Mr. Murdock took the lantern Peter held out to him without complaint while Peter fumbled through his pockets for a lighter.
He held it out.
“Do you want me to light it or are you okay?” he asked.
“You light it,” Mr. Murdock said. “This is heavy for me in this shape.”
 ---
--
-
Mr. Murdock took the lantern and left Peter to go meet MJ and Ned. The light had vanished by the time Peter looked back.
“I think Mr. Murdock’s a little sad,” he told the others.
“Ghost separation anxiety?” MJ offered.
“Maybe it’s harder for him to be with people who aren’t his family. Maybe he’s tired,” Ned said.
Yeah, maybe.
“Or maybe he’s a softie who doesn’t like scaring people,” MJ said. “But that means that Matt got his nonsense gene from the nun side.”
It wasn’t implausible.
“Hey, are you guys coming?” Abe tossed back at them. He was prepared with two flashlights and a backpack with a bulky mobile charger in his pocket. He’d said that he wasn’t falling for ‘any ghost shit’ that night and no one was making any ‘dumbass mistakes’ on his watch.
Peter thought that Abe might try to punch Mr. Murdock in the gut. He and MJ agreed to separate him from Flash as soon as possible.
 ---
--
-
Flash insisted on leading the charge—of course he did. Peter hung back a ways so that he could set offerings on graves. Ned told kept reminding him that he didn’t have to do it for every single one, and obviously Peter knew that. But some of the graves deserved stones on them and a quick prayer. That was just being polite.
Flash caught him at it and asked him if he was scared. Peter told him to mind his own business.
“We’re here to find ghosts, not feed them,” Flash volleyed back.
Peter pointed at him in a way that he hoped was dramatic enough for Mr. Murdock to catch sight of it from wherever he was.
“If they’re eatin’ these, they aren’t eatin’ me,” he said. He offered Flash an orange. “You want one?”
Ned snickered.
“You’re not funny, Parker,” Flash sighed. His breath clouded around him. “Come on, it’s not too much further.”
 ---
--
-
The ‘crypt’ was actually a mausoleum, as Peter had expected. It was tall and made of stone and Peter could tell immediately that it was of no one of import to the local necromancers.
Even the vultures had declared the folks in this one too boring for their rituals. It was probably a family thing. A bunch of folks who were ordinary but devout. Maybe they had a little money and chose to spend it in death.
Everyone had their own thing.
Peter had oranges and flowers, for example. He snuck around the corner to set one onto the ground by the stone.
His breath puffed out around it and misted away and Peter paused before standing up out of his stoop. He could feel a breeze on his cheeks. He looked up and around.
“Mr. Murdock?” he breathed.
Nothing.
No lantern light.
“You’re not my ghost,” Peter whispered. “I’m just leavin’ a snack, okay?”
The breeze seemed to vanish.
Cool.
“Don’t mind my spirit friend. He’s big and kinda glowy, but he’s not one of you,” Peter said.
“Peter?”
He glanced over his shoulder.
“I’ve gotta go,” he said. “But this other idiot is gonna try to climb onto your grave. Sorry about him. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it.”
The leaves at his feet blew up and scattered around the orange.
“No problem.” Peter said. “Bye now.”
He hurried back to the others.
 ---
--
-
The main problem was that none of them knew how roman numerals worked and, surrounded by ghosts, looking it up on the internet was kind of challenging.
MJ and Ned gave Peter pointed looks when he came back to join them.
They knew Peter could read roman numerals. He was assigned the task of keeping his mouth shut without anyone having to tell him.
“Maybe they don’t want to be read,” Felicia said.
“Correct,” Abe agreed. “No reading. I can’t read. None of us can read. This is a blessing of ignorance, given to us by the Lord.”
Flash stared at them.
“X is ten,” he deadpanned.
“Damnit, Flash,” Abe said.
“What’s L?” Flash said. “And M?”
“Code,” Ned chimed in.
He got flat eyebrows all around.
“We live in the twenty-first century,” Flash told the stone. “Just use normal numbers like everyone else.”
The wind kicked up a bit in offense.
“Alright, well, now what?” Abe said. “Not a single ghost so far. Only a creepy stone in a creepy yard with a creepy—oh shit. Turn off the light.”
Say what now?
“Keeper,” Abe snapped over his shoulder, pointing away from them towards a floating light. “Turn ‘em off or we’ll get kicked out.”
Oh.
The lantern.
Peter joined the others in turning off their lights and hiding on the other side of the mausoleum.
“You’d have thought it would be too late for working,” Felicia whispered.
“It’s a graveyard,” MJ whispered back. “The time you need the most coverage is night.”
“Are they still there?” Abe asked.
Flash peeked out from around the stone.
“No,” he said.
Peter untensed his shoulders and stepped out.
“What if it’s not a keeper?” he asked. “What if it’s a—”
“Huh-uh. No,” Abe snapped. “We’re not asking stupid questions tonight, remember, Parker? I specifically said this not 10 minutes ago. No stupid questions.”
Abe had seen a few horror movies, it would seem.
“Alright, alright. No stupid questions,” Peter said. “It’s just—that doesn’t look like a flashlight to me.”
Ned made a show of looking around.
“It’s gone, it doesn’t look like anything to anyone,” he said.
“This is exciting,” Felicia anxiety-giggled.
“It’s not,” MJ sighed. “Well, we’re already here. Might as well keep going.”
The others all turned towards her.
“Wait, you mean, go further?” Flash asked.
MJ shrugged.
“We’re only like, part of the way in,” she said.
Peter surveyed the space beyond their current alley of monuments. The light from the two floodlights at the gated entrance was already weak. Further out, there wouldn’t be light until they hit the war memorial way, way in the back.
That was a plenty big enough stretch.
“Guys? Did it get foggy?” Felicia asked.
Peter shivered.
He had about ten oranges left and an equal number of flower packets.
Welp.
“Let’s go,” he said. “Before it rolls in thicker.”
 ---
--
-
The grass seemed to get wetter and wetter with every yard and Peter had started to see things out of the corners of his eyes. Shadows. Little flickers of light.
He felt MJ’s fingers sink into his jacket sleeve as he watched an extra set of legs follow behind them in the jerky shadows jostled around by the flashlights.
Abe froze twice, each time to take a deep steady breath and to remind himself that he was not asking stupid questions.
Flash laughed at him, but the sound was strained and a little hysterical. Felicia had grabbed ahold of one of each of their arms up ahead. Ned touched Peter’s shoulder.
“Where is he?” he whispered.
Peter shrugged.
“He’s lantern man,” he said. “We’ll see him.”
“In the mist?”
Mmmm. Okay maybe they should have brought Johnny after all.
 ---
--
-
They were halfway to the war memorial when the lights above it suddenly went out. MJ’s fingers dug deep into Peter’s sleeve. Ned gasped.
“Dude,” Flash’s voice said in the dark. “That’s not cool. Don’t do that.”
“Don’t you talk to it,” Abe snapped. “Don’t you dare talk to it. Just walk. Don’t ask questions. Just walk.”
Peter felt wind against his cheeks. He shivered.
Mr. Murdock wouldn’t fuck with the lights, would he? Was he that strong?
Peter thought he was supposed to be a spirit, not a ghost. And he’d seemed kind of tired earlier. Surely he hadn’t fallen asleep or something, right?
There was a loud rustle to the right of their group and Peter jumped, which made MJ jump, which made Felicia yelp.
The rustle carried on. It was punctuated with a horrible, wet-sounding slap all of the sudden.
“Wh—what was that?” Flash asked.
Another slap rang out, then another. Followed by the sound of something dropping into leaves. Something…heavy.
“Nice try, slugger,” Mr. Murdock growled.
Actually growled. Like an angry tiger or something.
Peter shivered hard.
This guy hadn’t been scared at all. He’d been preparing himself.
To fight.
Fuck.
Abort mission. Abort, abort, abort.
“We need to leave,” Peter said sharply.
“Agreed,” MJ said.
“Yep,” Ned said.
“You speak my language finally,” Abe said. “About-face and—”
“Don’t move,” Mr. Murdock said dangerously.
Peter felt his body turn to ice.
“Who’s there?” Flash asked.
“They’re mine,” Mr. Murdock rumbled. “Hands off, ya fuckin’ lowlife. Yeah, get back to your hole. Go on.”
Oh, okay.
Fun times with the undead. Peter should have brought holy water.
“Wh—who’s there?” Flash asked again in a cracking voice.
The sound of metal clanking met them and then an orange flash crackled into sight. And there was Mr. Murdock. Six foot two and missing his hat. He looked huge and solid and his shoulders glowed ever so slightly.
Flash and Felicia and Abe gasped.
“Y’all better be moving along,” Mr. Murdock said, meeting Peter’s eyes seriously.
“Are—are you a ghost?” Felicia whispered.
Mr. Murdock flicked his eyes down at her and they didn’t reflect the light from the lantern.
“Folks call me ‘Jack,’” he said, holding out the lantern. “Or they used to. Nowadays, the little ones call me ‘John.’ This is a ritual grounds tonight, kids. Bad night for a hunt for the living. Go on, I’ll see you out. Take this; your lights won’t work.”
MJ took out her flashlight and it clicked as she turned it on and then off.
“What kind of ritual?” Peter asked.
Mr. Murdock’s lips thinned.
“Go,” he said.
Peter’s chest expanded.
“Where are they?” he asked.
Mr. Murdock shook his head.
“Go,” he said again. “This isn’t for you, little witch.”
Peter heard the others’ shape intakes of air, but he held firm.
“You’re a spirit,” he said. “You can’t stop them.”
Mr. Murdock sighed and his shoulders fell slowly.
“I’m not just a spirit,” he said. “I’m a hero. I’ll see you out. Tell my son the name of this place. He’ll come in the morning.”
Wh—
No, wait.
“Don’t go,” Peter said.
But he was already gone. Felicia was left holding the lantern.

They ran-slipped-fell all the way back the way they’d come. This time, Peter held his breath at the sound of too many feet hitting the wet pockets of mud around them. He heard Felicia sobbing and the lantern clanking dangerously ahead of them.
The floodlights at the entrance had gone out.
They had to carefully climb the fence and pass off the lantern one at a time until they were on the other said, panting.
Peter realized belatedly that he’d dropped the bag of grave offerings.
He dipped his head and clenched his fists.
He’d have to go back for it in the morning.
“You’re a witch,” Flash suddenly snapped at him.
“Lay off,” MJ said immediately.
“You’re a witch and you brought that—that guy with us?” Flash asked.
“It was supposed to be a joke,” Peter said.
“A joke?” Abe said. “You—Peter, witches aren’t real. Ghosts aren’t real. Who was that?”
“No, you, a witch, thought it would be funny to bring some kind of spirit with us to a graveyard?” Flash demanded.
Peter huffed.
“Hey, you were a dick about this first,” Ned said. “The ghost dude is harmless.”
“Harmless?” Flash said. “Harmless? Yeah, fuckin’ streetfighter ghost is harmless.”
“He’s not a ghost,” Abe said, “He’s an actor. Peter that’s not cool, man. That’s not cool.”
“He’s not an actor,” Felicia said quietly.
The rest of them turned to see her holding the still-burning lantern. She was staring into it.
“His hands were so cold,” she whispered.
Abe executed a full-body shiver.
“Well, now what?” he asked. “We’ve trespassed, found a ghost, and nearly got ritualed to death. What else do we need to do to learn that this was a bad idea all along?”
Peter looked up at the gate.
“Dark magic,” he said.
MJ and Ned turned towards him.
“Peter, you’re not going back in there,” Ned said.
“I took charge of the spirit,” Peter said, setting his jaw. “I’m not going back on my word to a selkie.” He jerked back. “I need my familiar,” he said. “You guys can go.”
“Your…familiar?” Abe said slowly. “Peter. Peter, you are not a witch.”
“He’s not a familiar like others are, maybe, but he’s mine,” Peter said. “And he’ll know how to help the spirit.”
Ned and MJ exchanged glances.
“Okay?” Ned said. “Well, where is he?”
 ---

-
Johnny answered his phone and said he’d been 20 minutes. They were the longest 20 minutes of Peter’s life and were spent primarily being interrogated by Abe, Flash, and Felicia.
They were understandably upset by the set-up, and then understandably upset by the fact that they were, in fact, living in ignorance of a whole multi-dimensional plane.
Abe demanded to know if genies were real, and Peter could only say that they probably were.
“Just so I’m clear here,” Flash said. “You went and borrowed your local seal-person’s husband for a jump-scare for us and now we are waiting on a fire demon to help us rescue the seal-person’s undead husband from some evil witches trying to raise the dead?”
Peter chewed a few fingers.
“That’s the gist of it, yeah,” he said.
“PARKER.”
“PETER. OH MY GOD.”
“Why didn’t you say something?” Abe sobbed.
“I was appeasing the spirits,” Peter snapped at them. “Why do you think I brought all those oranges? Do I look like I’m vitamin C deficient?”
“You’re a witch,” Felicia said. “You’re a witch. That’s insane. How do you—”
“I’m not a witch,” Peter sighed. “I’m—I’m a—I’m almost a witch.”
“Clearly,” Abe said.
“Hey, leave him alone,” Ned jumped in. “It’s no one’s fault this happened. We all thought we were walking into a totally different situation.”
“Yeah, except Mr. Ghost Man,” Flash said. “He knew what was up. Why didn’t you listen to him? Or, I dunno, read the undead-people signs?”
“Because he’s not my family spirit,” Peter snapped at him. “And he’s not a ghost. He’s a spirit, and not like a spirit, even. He’s a—it’s hard to explain. I don’t even know what he is. He’s just different. He’s like an inbetween kind of—”
“He’s a hero.”
They all looked up to see Johnny standing there in blue with a black knitted scarf wrapped triple around his neck. His eyes flashed orange and red and gold. The ground swayed around him, light up by his internal lantern.
Everyone around Peter recoiled.
“What does that mean, Johnny?” Peter asked quietly. “I don’t understand.”
“It means that the spirits of the sea granted him another life in exchange for the protection he offered their people during his human one,” Johnny said. “You should know by now, Peter; the fae work in exchanges.”
“He already made his deal,” Peter said. “I don’t understand.”
“His deal as a human was fulfilled. His soul is safe with his selkie, only she can shepherd it. It will go to the Otherworld, where he will stay in comfort. But he’s chosen to stay here--as a hero. In this world. And as long as he is here and not in the Otherworld, his purpose is to protect humans and fae, to protect them from each other if he must, as he stands now with a foot on both sides of the line.”
Peter felt his breath coming slowly again.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked.
“Because,” Johnny said with a sudden smile. “Your soul is already mine—we share a heart remember? I don’t need you getting stupid ideas—imagine if you decided to become a hero, then died and decided to stick around these parts instead of letting me take you to the Otherworld. You’d drive yourself mad, Peter. You’d never sleep ever again.”
Peter blinked.
“You lied to me?” he asked.
“I’m a fire demon,” Johnny said. “We listen to truths. We don’t have to tell them.”
Wow.
“Know that I’m really upset with you right now,” Peter said.
Johnny bobbed his head.
“But you’re more upset about the hero,” he said. “No need for that. He didn’t become a hero by dumb luck, and anyways, look at his kid. He’ll be fine; he’s the original material. A little dark magic isn’t gonna tear him up. He’s probably just gonna—”
There was a flash like miniature lightening through the bars of the gate.
“I take it back,” Johnny said. “Whoopsy-daisy. Come on, now, heart-boy. Up and over.”
 ---
--
-
Peter landed on the other side of the gate right into mud that hadn’t been there a moment earlier.
“What’s going on?” he asked as Johnny hopped down with him.
“Big, wet,” Johnny said. “Dark, dark magic. Gross. Sticky. Here, we need more light.”
Little embers glittered in the throw of fire that expanded Johnny’s lantern lights. It brightened the space substantially and when Peter looked down, the ground was dry.
“Dude,” Flash said. “You know what? I’m convinced.”
“Johnny Storm is a fire demon,” Abe wept into his hands.
“Stay here,” Peter told Ned and MJ, we’ll be—”
“BACK. BACK. BACK.”
Johnny slammed Peter against the fence and let out a hiss that sounded like water hitting a scalding piece of metal. Peter’s heart throbbed. Johnny slowly released the pressure on him and made a clicking noise.
“I think,” he said after a moment. “That perhaps I am not a big enough fire.”
Dude, what?
Johnny turned to him.
“Sorry,” he said sadly. “More and more are waking up every second. They’re heavy.”
Dude, what?
“I’m really sorry,” Johnny said. “But uh. I think I need to, uh—”
“Need to what, Johnny?” MJ demanded on the other side of the fence.
Johnny looked like he was going to cry.
 ---
--
-
 “JONATHAN STORM.”
Scary, scary, scary, scary, scary.
“Sue,” Johnny pleaded. “Not here. Not now. There’s hero in the—”
“Oh, I see him,” Sue Storm said, looming. “He’s doing just fine. He’ll hold on for long enough for me to—”
“It’s my fault,” Peter blurted out. “I called him here.”
Sue Storm’s blue eyes seemed to blaze in the dark.
“Don’t blame him,” Johnny said. “I’ll take it. He’s my human. I’ll take it.”
“This is dark magic,” Sue said. “None of you should be here. This earth will turn sodden under the spell of these monsters. The hero will return it to balance. You two, in the meantime, are no heroes. Not even halves of one.”
Peter felt his face burning.
“He’s the selkie’s, Sue,” Johnny said quietly. “He’s not long a hero. Please help him?”
Sue Storm chewed her tongue, gazing holes into Johnny’s face. Johnny looked away first.
“Which selkie?” she demanded.
“Her name is Margaret,” Peter said.
Sue’s face jerked his way. Her eyes widened and she turned back out towards the cemetery.
“Oh,” she said softly. “That selkie. She’s more like us.”
Peter frowned.
“I don’t—” he started.
“She honors the earth and its fae even though she’s sea folk,” she said. She sighed heavily. “Alright, fine. I’ll help. But for the hero, not either of you, you hear? Johnny, you’ll need to make things right with the selkie. She’ll be furious. She’s been nothing but kind to our people. We can’t repay her like this.”
“Will do,” Johnny said.
“Stay here,” Sue said. “All of you. The curse has got into you. We’ll break it all at once.”
Oh shit.
MJ and Ned turned slowly towards Peter.
“Curse?” Ned asked.
Peter groaned.
---
--
-
“It’s a friendship circle,” Johnny bubbled as Peter shoved him, once again, into the sigil he was trying to draw in the dirt at the cemetery entrance.
“I’m gonna salt you in and I will not regret it,” Peter threatened him.
“Johnny, come sit,” Ned said, patting the place between him and Felicia.
“Never,” Johnny hissed at him. “My heart is right—”
Peter left him to finish the circle. Johnny hurried to keep up with him.
Flash watched after him with furrowed eyebrows and a fist pressed to his mouth.
“This is not how this night was supposed to go,” he said.
“We didn’t even ask any stupid questions,” Abe sighed.
“What’s she doing out there?” Felicia asked.
Peter shoved Johnny’s flailing body towards her and finally finished the circle. He’d never made one this big. He started in on the protective signs around the interior.
“She’s a boggart!” Johnny chirped. “She’s boggart-ing!”
Peter felt the pause of the others more than he heard it.
“What does that mean?” Felicia asked.
“Oh. She’s a faerie of darkness,” Johnny said. “So she’s probably winding her way through all the posers and chasing them back to their hovels so that she can go chase the witches away from the hero and let him rest for a bit. She’ll guide him back if he’ll let her—which he might not. You never know with heroes. He might not want her smell on him.”
Peter had the feeling that Mr. Murdock was made of more sense than pride.
“How long will that take?” Abe asked.
Johnny made happy crackling sounds.
“Who knows! Depends on the witches,” he said. “Depends on how many people she needs to terrify. Boggarts get power through fear. The more spirits she scares, the faster she’ll be.”
Peter moved Ned’s backpack out of the way and carried on.
There was a lull.
“Peter, what are you doing?” Felicia asked.
“Protection circle,” MJ said for him.
“Oh.”
There was another silence.
“Where did you learn that?” Abe asked.
“His aunt’s a full witch. She does business in herbs, potions, and materials for their part of Forest hills,” Ned said.
“Oh.”
Flash and Abe scooted forward to let Peter in behind him. They watched him.
“That’s pretty cool, actually,” Felicia said. “Thanks for that.”
A mumbled thanks went around the whole group. Peter finished the final marks and stepped carefully over them into the circle.
“It’s nothing,” he sighed, flopping down and dragging Johnny away from Ned. “I should have known better. I think the ghosts were trying to warn me from the start. I should have listened better.”
More awkward silence.
“Well, it sounds like the fighting’s calmed down,” MJ said. “Mr. Murdock should be okay.”
Yeah.
“Wait,” Abe said. “Isn’t that your boss, MJ?”
Welp.
“Ghost man is my boss’s dad,” MJ sighed.
“Oh my god,” Felicia giggled. “You guys roped your boss’s dad into a practical joke?”
“He didn’t even want to scare you guys,” Peter groaned. “Man, I gotta learn how to read spirits. Johnny, how do I read spirits?”
“No idea. Spirits don’t like me. I’m too bright and obnoxious,” Johnny said.
“I’m un-bonding us,” Peter said. “You have nothing but bad advice and secrets.”
Johnny made kissy noises at him then scrambled up straight.
“Sue’s got the hero,” he said. “She’s arguing with him. Ahahaha.”
Peter cleared his throat. Johnny startled.
“Right, sorry,” he said. “She’s uh. Trying to convince him to come with her, but he’s refusing to look at her. Smart guy, you know that? Name a boggart and they’ll go off on you. He doesn’t want to chance it. Sue’s telling him that she’ll do the invisible thing so he doesn’t see her and he’s not into it, guys.”
Peter took it back. Maybe Mr. Murdock had too much sense for his own good.
“Can you talk to him?” Felicia asked.
“Who? Hero-man? Nah. I can just feel Sue’s frustration,” Johnny said. “Sibling bond, forever. You know?”
No, Johnny. No one knew. The only people with siblings in the circle were MJ and Abe.
“You’re so annoying,” MJ said.
“Aw, I like you too,” Johnny tittered.
Peter yanked him back and prayed that Mr. Murdock would give into the inevitable soon.
 ---
--
-
“Look? See? No trouble. Not even a little trouble. Did I lie to you?”
Peter snapped awake and shook himself. He blinked into the dark until the shapes of bodies appeared before him as the other woke up too. They all turned around to see the dark outline of Sue standing on the other side of the fence.
Mr. Murdock’s tall shape was there too.
They looked…uh.
Kinda scuffed up, actually, hair-wise and scratches and bruises--the whole thing.
“Lord, she’s still talking to me,” Mr. Murdock said, facing away from Sue, now that Peter could see better.
“God is smart enough to see through you talking to him to talk to me,” She pointed out.
“Lord, you are so unknowable,” Mr. Murdock said pointedly.
“You know, for a fae hero, you’re sure religious.”
“Please see me through this period of suffering,” Mr. Murdock carried on. “And safely away from this hostile body and place.”
Johnny leapt up.
“You found him!” he cheered.
“Yes, of course I did,” Sue said. “He was fine, by the way. Meat-head here has anvils for hands.”
“I keep hearing voices, Lord,” Mr. Murdock said miserably. “Whatever sin it is I’ve committed, I’m willing to repent. But you’ve gotta help me out, man; the priest is convinced I’m a demon in his confession box.”
“Move,” Sue told Johnny. “Come one, Hero-man. We’re going through a fence. I dunno if you’ll fit with all those muscles.”
They all watched as Sue got a handful of the back of Mr. Murdock’s shirt and dragged him through the largest part of the gate uncomfortably.
“You did it!” she cheered. “Successful hero. Another quest fulfilled. Look at all these living children. And you even picked up a rock! That’s good for a young guy like—”
“I’m going back to the church and I’m never leaving,” Mr. Murdock finally told her directly.
“Oh,” Sue said. “You’re a church hero. That’s new.”
“I’m done. No more seals. No more mountains. No more lakes. No more cemeteries,” Mr. Murdock said, shaking himself and dragging his hands through his hair to smooth it out.
“Oh, wow, you’ve really been through it, huh?” Sue asked his back as he left them all in place.
“No more superpowers either,” Mr. Murdock said over his shoulder at her. He moved on ahead purposefully.
“I want him,” Sue told Johnny forcefully.
“He’s taken,” Johnny reminded her.
“He’s sturdy is what he is,” Sue said.
“Reed is sturdy,” Johnny pointed out.
Sue contemplated this.
“But he’s not fae,” she said.
Johnny rolled his eyes.
“Sue, we can throw your boyfriend into a graveyard of dark magic and let him fight his way home,” he said. “That’s something we can do. We can even time him.”
Sue drummed fingers across her face and slowly wrapped an arm around Johnny’s shoulders until his cheek was smushed up against hers against his will.
“You are so smart, little brother, sometimes I forget how smart you are,” she said.
She threw him away and straightened herself out.
“We’re hours from dawn,” she said. “We’re going home. Baby witch, you and my brother will apologize to the selkie tomorrow. I don’t think the hero wants to stay with you until then. I’m 90% sure, actually, the hero is already catching a train without you. The rest of you--”
She rounded on all of them.
“Do not play with ghosts, witches, spirits or any receptacle of them, do I make myself clear?”
Peter shrunk under her finger.
“Yes, ma’am,” they all mumbled.
She sniffed.
“Good,” she said. “Now we all need to go talk to baby’s witch’s mom. You have one hell of a curse hanging over you.”

-
 May was not pleased.
May doused them all in six different herb waters and made them eat something foul that tasted like charcoal and rubbing alcohol.
Then they had to get sprayed off with the hose in the backyard until all the cemetery mud came off and only then did May send everyone home.

-
 “Hey Peter?”
Peter looked up from his grinding in the doorframe the next morning—it as far as he was allowed at the present moment—and jumped at the whole group from the night before staring down at him.
He scrambled up.
“Uh, hi,” he said.
“Did you say sorry to the selkie yet?” Felicia asked him.
He almost wanted to shush her and check for passersby. May swore at something in the kitchen behind him. He edged forward and closed the door as far as he could without closing it all the way.
“No, not yet. What are you all doing here?” he asked.
He got a wave of eyebrows all around.
“We wanted to go with you and to say thanks. To the hero guy. You know. For uh, saving us from certain and horrible death,” Abe said.
Oh.
Oh.
“Let me, uh--give me just a second,” Peter said.

-
Matt was at his apartment and he opened the door at the third knock. He heard MJ clear her throat and started cackling immediately.
“Don’t be a dick,” MJ said. “Let us say thank you.”
Matt remained inarticulate.
“Oh my god,” he finally choked. “Do you know—I haven’t—He hasn’t been this mad since I ate fries off the street—hold oh. Oh my god.”
Ew, man. That’s disgusting.
“Pops, come on out,” Matt coaxed, wiping tears from his eyes and skirting fingers across his kitchen counter until he got to cupboard under the sink. “They just wanna say sorry, Dad. It’s okay. There’s no secret second quest.”
Mr. Murdock refused to exit his newfound home.
Matt snickered so hard his shoulders shook. He stood up and found his counter to lean his elbows against.
“No harm, no foul to us,” he said amiably. “Mum’s been trying to keep a straight face in Mass. He came here for sympathy that I’m afraid I don’t have.”
Man. It was a wonder that Mr. Murdock stuck around at all.
Peter puffed himself up anyways.
“Mr. Murdock,” he said. “I know you can hear me. And I wanted to say that I’m sorry for roping you into the whole thing yesterday, but I’m also super glad you were there. ‘Cause we would’ve been screwed otherwise. So thank you.”
“Yeah, thank you,” Felicia said. “You’re really nice, and I’m glad you were there, too.”
The others added their thanks to the pile and Matt grinned in the direction of the cupboard.
“Come onnn,” he drawled. “I can feel you giving in, in there.”
Nothing.
Matt muffled a round of giggles in his sleeve.
“He accepts your thanks,” he said. “He’s just allergic to sunlight and gratitude.”
The cupboard door rattled violently. Matt shoved a foot against it.
“Mum isn’t mad either, she thinks it’s healthy for him to do quests without her,” he said. “So you’re all good with the three of us.”
Peter wasn’t positive that they were actually. But okay, sure?
“I guess we’ll leave you guys to uh, brood? Baseball? Whatever it is you do together?” He said.
Matt hummed and nodded and waved them out. Peter shut the door behind them.
“That was easy,” Flash said.
“Man, I hope my dad just dies the once,” Abe said.
“My dad isn’t cool enough to fight zombies in a graveyard,” Felicia said.
MJ considered this.
“My mom could do it,” she said.
Ned snorted. Peter swallowed a laugh.
---
--
-
“So,” Flash said as they passed by the church that Mr. Murdock usually called home. “I know it was all kind of an actual nightmare, but like. I dunno.”
Peter stopped.
“You want more fae bullshit?” he asked in shock.
Flash rubbed at the back of his neck and even Abe and Felicia refused to make eye contact. Ned and MJ stared at them, then Peter in shock.
“It’s just really cool,” Flash admitted. “Like, there’s all this stuff that I thought was fake. But it’s all happening here, all at once—you know. Heroes and zombies and fire demons and witches.”
“This isn’t a tv show,” Peter said. “You know that right? Like, we don’t always win? Yeah, there are heroes and witches, but there’s also really bad magic. Dangerous fae. There are turf wars and tricksters and everything you do is a deal and you always owe someone something. It’s not always fun.”
“Okay, but isn’t it better to know?” Flash asked.
Peter closed his lips.
He didn’t have an argument for that.
“I’m not teaching you,” he sniffed. “I’m already apprenticed. If you want a mentor, it can’t be me—and you can’t have my demon.”
“But he’s Johnny Storm,” Abe blurted out. “Johnny. Storm. Peter, how did you even swing that? And why does he listen to you.”
“He doesn’t,” MJ butted in.
“He does,” Peter corrected.
“He really doesn’t,” Ned said. “Peter’s an amateur witch at best who bound himself to a fire demon with impulse control issues.”
Wow. Betrayed by his own family.
“I’m leaving, I’m grounded, you guy go get a grimoire or something and learn your magic bullshit yourselves,” he said.
“Aww, come on.”
“They were just joking, Peter.”
“Come backkkkk.”
Mr. Murdock had the right idea. Peter had a cupboard to find.

Hope this hits the spot, boo!! And Happy Halloween, y’all!

Me? —Or Gene?
This chapter is making me sad. Half-way done. Confession time.
2
“I’m a mess...”
I rested my back against a tree in the forest. The light of the moon was shining down.
Even though I shouldn’t cry, even though there are people who are hurting more than me, even though I should be offering comfort and encouragement...
Despite that, if I don’t look upward, my tears will spill over.
My chest really hurts. …It’s painful.
I don’t really understand why it’s so painful.
“Hmph.”
I want to cry. But I don’t want to cry.
So, I was relieved when I was called out to.
“What are you doing?”
That disgusted tone of voice belonged to Naru. When I scrubbed my face and looked in the direction of the voice, I saw Naru, who looked truly disgusted.
“Do you intend to eat the moon? Even if you wait with your mouth open, the moon won’t fall in.”
...I swear, he’s foul-mouthed!
Still, thanks to that my tears have subsided, so I’ll forgive him in this instance.
“I don’t particularly want to eat it.”
“Where’s Luella?”
To think that he calls his mother so.
“She’s in our bungalow. ...What about your brother?”
“The police took him away.”
“Hmm...”
I wonder why he’s this indifferent. It’s a little irritating that he’s completely the same as always.
“You’re not being honest...”
“What?”
Naru, who began walking towards the light of the bungalow, looked back.
“You sourpuss! Can’t you just cry freely?”
“It isn’t necessarily something to cry over.”
“But you’re sad, aren’t you?”
Naru gave me a slightly cynical smile.
“Unfortunately, I’m a stupid person who doesn’t understand the subtleties of emotions.”
This guy’s holding a grudge.
“You’re not honest.”
“Everyone dies.”
His voice was quiet.
“In a hundred years, not a single person you know will be alive. ”
“That isn’t the point.”
“That is the point.”
He’s a truly obstinate person.
I looked up at the moon.
“You’re going back to England...”
“Yeah.”
It's okay to tell him. At this point.
“Umm… I liked you.”
“I heard more than enough about how favorably you view me this afternoon.”
“Idiot. That’s not what I meant.”
I looked at Naru. He was looking at me a little strangely, so I couldn’t help laughing.
“You’re slow.”
“What?”
“Well, I liked you in a very special way.”
Naru stared back at me. His pupils were jet-black. He tilted his head slightly, then his white face smiled faintly.
“Me? —Or Gene?”
For a moment, I was dumbfounded.
What is he suggesting?
“That’s...”
Such a thing, that’s been decided, hasn’t it?
Naru’s going back. So, I thought I’d tell him. Because I won’t be able to see him anymore. Before long.
...We’ll never meet again.
I’ll never see that smile. He’ll never show up again in any of my dreams.
I couldn’t answer. Sad and regretful, I burst into tears.
“But… I didn’t know!”
I didn’t know. That wasn’t Naru. I never realized he was no longer in this world. I was sure that one day Naru would smile at me like that. Even though he never smiles like that.
Tumblr media
“I didn’t know… I didn’t understand anything at all.”
He always helped me and encouraged me, but I didn’t even thank him. I was mistaken the whole time and got it wrong until the end.
“I always called him Naru.”
That’s all I ever called him. I never once tried to get to know the real him.
My chest hurts. It’s so painful I want to die.
I crouched on the spot and cried aloud.
