Flat Earthers, Will Duffy, and the Final Experiment
Will Duffy has organized a trip to Antarctica for several flat-earthers and several round-earthers, to make observations together (especially of the overhead-circling 24-hour sun visible in the southern summer) and make progress in the "debate." The trip is happening in a few days. This has been the #1 topic for both flat-earthers and anti-flat-earthers making videos for the last year.
Throughout all this, it's been sad and remarkable watching Duffy's gradual loss of innocence. All the top flat-earthers have always said they wanted to go to Antarctica-- and all of them have always agreed that observing a 24-hour sun in Antarctica was impossible on a flat earth model, so such an observation would falsify flat earth theory. They acted confident that there was no 24-hour sun in Antarctica.
So, Duffy started this project in the hopes that flat-earthers would be open to the project and be excited to finally get their wish. A few flat-earthers agreed to go, but most rejected it vehemently.
Duffy has been pretty much the nicest guy ever in his treatment of flat-earthers. Over the last year, he has been disappointed again and again. Many flat-earthers have changed their story in sudden and drastic ways-- now saying that the observations in Antarctica don't matter at all, that the Gleason's Azimuth Equidistant Projection Map is no longer important (but haven't presented an alternative), that any flat-earther who accepts the free trip to Antarctica is a sell-out, and that Duffy and all the round-earthers going on the trip are literally possessed by demons.

Okay, looking at the current push for reprints among the Batfam kids, what is available (trying to round this up):
Dick: Nightwing Compendium #1, with Nightwing vol 1, Nightwing vol 2 1-25 plus extras (out 7 May 2024); Nightwing Compendium #2, with Nightwing vol 2 26-59 plus extras (out 20 May 2025)
Jason: DC Finest: Batman - Year One and Two, despite the name, this covers Batman #404-414 and 'Tec #571-581, which contains his post-Crisis origin story and most of his 'Tec appearances as Robin (out 5 November 2024); Under the Red Hood Deluxe, with Batman #635-650 and Lost Days (out 5 September 2023); RHATO 2011 Omnibus, #0-27 (out 13 May 2025)
Tim: Robin Compendium #1, with Robin I, II & III, Robin vol 2 #1-5 and a LOT of assorted early material from Alan Grant (out 23 July 2024)
Steph: Batgirl: Stephanie Brown Vol 1, with Batgirl vol 3 #1-12 (out 22 October 2024)
Cass: DC Finest: Nobody Dies Tonight, with Batgirl vol 1 #7-27 (out 8 April 2025)
Damian: Batman and Robin by Peter J. Tomasi Omnibus, with Batman & Robin vol 1 #22-24, Batman & Robin vol 2 #0-40 and extras (out 17 January 2023); Batman & Robin vol 1: Batman Reborn, with B&R vol 1 #1-6 (out 25 April 2023); Batman & Robin vol 2: Batman v Robin, with B&R vol 1 #7-12 (out 29 April 2025); Robin: Son of Batman by Patrick Gleason #1-13 (out 5 November 2024)
Barbara: Simone and Bedard's BOP runs have just finished a run of reprints in 2023 and are looping around to redo it again right now: Murder & Mystery BOP #56-67 (out 22 October 2024); Hero Hunters BOP #68-80 (out 6 May 2025); Fighters By Trade #81-91 (most recent 21 September 2021, look out for this one again); Progeny BOP #92-103 (out 26 March 2024); Whitewater #104-112 (out 5 July 2022); and The End of the Beginning #113-127 (out 21 February 2023); the Batgirl vol 4 run had omnis in 2021 and 2022 covering the whole run.
Helena B: the same BOP reprints as Barbara, also has Robin III in Robin Compendium #1.
Maps: Gotham Academy vol 1 #1-18 (out 9 May 2023)
Duke: All-Star Batman by Scott Snyder, with #1-14 (out 10 September 2024)
Jean-Paul: okay JPV doesn't have anything for Azrael. But Knightfall gets reprints every 5 years like clockwork and we just had a 2023 omnibus, so I think that counts for him.
There is a massive push to get everyone's major solos/personal teams into print at the moment, to my eye, with the big gaps being actually getting Red Robin back into print, finally collecting Huntress vol 1 for Helena Bertinelli, and then like...actually continuing the reprints in the big projects (Robin, early BOP).

Million Dollar Man
Chapter 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-
Sent.
There it was—my very first music contract signed.
My hands swiped back and forth between the 'sent' and 'draft' inboxes, confirming the reality of the moment. The air shuddered with anticipation as I blankly stared at my inbox, silently praying for a reply in the mere 1.4 seconds since I hit 'send.'
Fresh out of university last year, I found myself grappling with the realisation that I needed to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. Studying history had its limits—teaching or diving into more debt for a specialised master's degree were the conventional routes. However, nestled in the corners of my life was my little secret—I'd always been a songwriter. It wasn't something anyone really knew about until 3 months ago. After a drunken night in with my mum, I mustered the courage to share one of my demos with her. Her insistence that it was the greatest piece of music she'd ever heard, albeit the expected maternal praise, boosted my confidence. The morning after, armed with nothing more than my shitty Amazon mic and GarageBand, I sent three of my best demos to four different music labels across the country.
In the agonising months of waiting for a reply from any label, hope slipped through my fingers with each passing day. Just when despair threatened to engulf me, a glimmer of possibility emerged two weeks ago. Emails from two labels requesting in-person meetings to discuss my music further landed in my inbox, a lifeline amid the silence. Navigating a whirlwind 24-hour trip to London, I juggled the meetings, fueled by a mix of nerves and excitement. Having returned to my parents' home post-university, my part-time receptionist job became the financial anchor for one day moving out and starting my own new little life.
The journey from the North to London felt long, god it was so long, yet the promise of these potential signings kept me going. The meetings with both labels exceeded expectations, but Dirty Hit held a specific pull on me. They not only understood my musical aspirations but, to my disbelief, I met specifically with the label's founder, Jamie Oborne. A stark contrast to the very very lovely but somewhat underwhelming talent scout at the other label, Dirty Hit resonated with me on every level—the sound, the artists, the team. It felt like a perfect fit, a musical home where my compositions seamlessly blended with their illustrious discography.
The dream was a reality when Jamie extended the signing offer. Without hesitation, I accepted. The train ride back, though again, immensely long, was some of the best fun I’ve ever had. Amidst the clatter of the tracks, I scribbled down fragments for future songs, mapped out my imaginary world tour, envisioned albums, and even planned my Met Gala outfit. The euphoria of realising a lifelong dream had just basically become a reality in a matter of months hadn’t given me any time to process anything. But I was absolutely ready to potentially start something absolutely amazing. And here I was sitting in front of my MacBook, staring blankly at my Gmail.
The next few weeks were a whirlwind, a lot of online meetings, emailing and future discussing. Jamie liked my demos and wanted to get them produced and mixed professionally as well as teach me how to do it myself. I travelled back to London a few times in the weeks prior to practice and test with different producers the team thought I’d mix well with. My most successful session was my most recent, as Dirty Hit expensed a hotel for me for two nights in London to focus on my time in the studio. Ben Gleason, one of Dirty Hit’s leading producers, was someone who truly understood my music and shaped it in a way that I could genuinely hear one of my demos appearing on the radio, it was crazy. His vision and expertise were admirable to anyone. My demo, over the past 15 hours we worked on it, had turned into a real, titled potential single – ‘Million Dollar Man’.
Before I was sent to travel back home, we sent it off to the team to listen to and give feedback. It was a success, thank god. Waiting for the train to come in at Kings Cross, the sound of my ringtone filled my headphones. As I looked at my phone, I wasn’t fazed by the ‘unknown’ number and filled my boredom by answering it anyway.
‘Hello?’ I said in a slow voice, totally expecting some type of phone provider or accident scam, which usually came with answering unknown numbers.
“Hi, is this Camille?” A chirpy, womanly voice replied back to me.
“It is, yeah,” I replied nonchalantly. “Who is this, sorry?”
“Perfect! It’s Holly from Dirty Hit,” She replied. My breathing hitched, okay this phone call was important then and not just fun. This must be Jamie’s assistant, who I met a couple times through our Zoom meetings. “Thought I’d give you a little ring, so you can get my number saved and so I can update you on some things! We’ve just had a meeting today about what we want to do with you in the next few weeks and we went through everything you talked about, and we were thinking about potentially focusing you more on studio time right now, and we are wanting you to build on the songs you are in the process of and create one really really strong song that we can put out as your debut. What are your thoughts on that?”
“I think that’s a great idea! Ben and I were brainstorming a lot of songs that had great potential, so it would be cool to work with him again,” I practically begged through the phone. Ben is most definitely my favourite producer in the three I’d worked with in the short time. As much as I think Million Dollar Man is perfect, there are so many that might even end up better.
“Yeah, Ben is one of the best, especially for your sound,” she agrees, pausing for a second as she clicks what sounds like a pen and takes time to write something down. “We were thinking of sending you and a couple of our producers on a work getaway and maybe taking the time that you are there to write some songs and find your own dynamic with them, what do you think?”
“Of course, I’d love to!” I exclaim through the phone. Walking through the station to get to my soon departing train back home. Amazing, more studio work, more song writing - I have been dreaming of getting phone calls like this for years.
I have so many ideas in my head and written in my notebook just waiting to be explored with real professionals like Ben. I just prayed silently in my head that my quick praise of him would lead them sending him on the getaway along with whoever else they wanted to send with me - probably Joel or Vanna, the other two producers I had worked with in the time I’d been here. Joel’s sound was old school and he loved that classic drum in the background. Of course I didn’t hate it; he always made it sound gorgeous, but I loved the more earthy, tender sounds - songs that you could sit in the bath and vibe/pour your eyes out to. Vanna’s sound was cool, she worked a lot with the 1975, Dirty Hit’s biggest signing. Working with her was very fun, hearing about her stories with them and lots of other big musicians she has produced allowed me to have a little fangirl moment a couple times in the studio.
“Do you have an idea on which producers are coming along?” I continued.
“I’m just gonna give Ben a call and see when he’s available,” she replied. Yes! Thank god. “Thought I’d give you a call first before I called anyone else… but I know you haven’t met yet but Jamie thinks it would be a great opportunity to work with Matty aswell.”
“Matty… Healy, from the 1975?” I stutter. Surely not, I know he worked with Baebadoobee and a couple others on their latest work but surely he wouldn’t take the time to work with someone who’s just starting, would he? I wasn’t a huge 1975 fan, but I knew of their songs and Matty’s work and I admired them a lot. I’d kill to get to the level they are, but all in good time.
“Yeah, actually!” She laughed slightly through the phone. Woah. “He actually works a lot with our artists to establish their sound, you know what I mean? and he’s really talented, I promise. He was a part of our meeting today and he’s got a lot of good ideas that I think you’ll like, not to mention all the advice he can give you with starting out and he can talk you through his own experiences as well.”
“That’s amazing, I love his work!” I smile to myself, probably looking like an idiot in front of all these serious, fast walking Londoners. It seems so unbelievable that Matty Healy would take any time out of his busy schedule to work on my music, he must be bored. “If that’s something he is interested in, then I’d absolutely love to work together on something.”
“Okay, that’s perfect!” She replied. “No, he’s very interested, don’t worry. He went with Beabadoobee on a work getaway a few months ago, working on some new stuff and they made some gorgeous music - think he just wants the bragging rights again really. But, honestly he’s a star, you'll love him.”
As I was settling myself down on the busy train, Holly was writing down my best dates for the trip and ended the phone call pleasantly soon after. A Sunday to Wednesday a few weeks from now was the time they had written down for Matty’s availability and that worked with me! God knows where they were going to take us, but I couldn’t help but get excited. Me, Ben and sexy Matty Healy. I just hope he’s not a dick.

Why is so hard for DC to understand that we don't want Damian to be evil?
Why does everything have to be dramatic? Honestly Damian going on a journey with Colin, Maya, Mara, Maps, Surren and Jon where they all become closer while they go on fun adventures would be so much entertaining.
Plus by making Damian evil, your throwing years of development Gleason and Tomasi worked hard to build up down the drain.

Update: I wrote the above post several months ago, and I have learned more about the flat earth discourse since then. In my original post, I said there was a consensus among flat-earthers that Antarctica was a ring around the known world (as per the Alexander Gleason azimuthal-equidistant map pictured above). This is basically the consensus among high-profile flat-earthers on YouTube, and it seems to be the sizeable majority view among modern online flat-earthers in general. However, I have since learned there are a few flat-earthers who propose alternative maps.
A few flat-earthers propose an “inverse azimuthal-equidistant” map, where the Arctic Ocean is around the perimeter, and Antarctica is in the center. The Inverse AE map has nearly all the problems of the regular AE map, plus a bunch of new problems such as failing to explain why there are way more flights over and near the Arctic than there are flights over and near the Antarctic. Moreover, while the inverse AE map can explain the 24-hour sun in Antarctica during one half of the year, it has an inverted version of the same problem–it cannot explain the 24-hour sun in the Arctic, during the other half of the year. Even most flat-earthers acknowledge that the 24-hour sun in the Arctic is real, denying only the 24-hour sun in the Antarctic. Will Duffy, who led the Final Experiment, made one or two videos debunking the Inverse AE map.
There are several other even more fringe flat-earth maps as well. While the Gleason AE map and the Inverted AE map are both mono-pole maps (denying the existence of one geographic pole or the other), a few other flat-earth maps are “bi-polar.” Elizabeth Blount was a flat-earther who proposed a bi-polar model in the early 1900s. Even earlier, before Rowbotham, the anonymous author of “The Anti-Newtonian” also proposed a bi-polar model. A bi-polar model was also revived by a single fringe flat-earther several years ago, Colin Sweeney, who specifically aimed to account for the 24-hour sun in the Antarctic. However, these models never caught on among most flat-earthers, for whatever reason. (I’m not sure precisely how to refute Sweeney’s model, but I’m pretty sure his main arguments badly mangle how celestial geometry works.)
Finally, there are a few other flat-earthers who propose models that either require, or flat-out insist on the existence of, portals from west to east. These are also quite fringe, even by flat-earth standards, and are rejected or ignored by nearly all flat-earthers.
All these alternative flat-earth maps do generally preserve the parallels and meridians, but at the cost of egregious distortions of the shapes of known geographic regions (which, to be clear, is already a serious cost of the Gleason AE map, especially in the southern hemisphere [‘hemiplane’]).
So, the Final Experiment is still a rebuttal to the map that is most widely accepted by flat-earthers (the Gleason AE map), even if it does not address a few even more fringe flat-earth maps.
Oh, another caveat. I’ve said the Antarctic 24-hour sun is not possible on a flat-earth model. This is true only if we ignore the fact that the flat-earth model actually requires a 24-hour sun in all parts of the world at all times of the year. It has been demonstrated that flat-earthers’ own models entail that the sun should be at least 10 or so degrees above the horizon at all times, no matter where you are or what time of year it is. Flat-earthism makes sunsets impossible altogether. I’m ignoring this problem for the purpose of discussing the Antarctica phenomenon in particular.
Moreover, Antarctica poses a problem also because the sun is often visible to the south, which should not be possible on a flat-earth model, since most flat-earthers think the sun never goes farther south than the Tropic of Capricorn. During about half the year, someone in Antarctica will see the sun encircle them overhead, going 360 degrees from right to left over the course of 24 hours. So the problem is not precisely that a 24-hour sun is visible, but where the sun appears in the sky.
In late December, the sun never fully sets when you view it from Antarctica—a 24-hour sun. This only makes sense on the globe earth model, and is precluded by all flat earth models. All flat earth maps depict Antarctica as a massive ring around the rest of the world (pictured below). All the high-profile modern flat earthers, until recently, have had a consensus that the sun surely DOES set in Antarctica—and that every single one of the existing 24-hour Antarctic sun videos are fake.
However, in recent months, a globe earth model advocate (i.e. normal person) has announced and confirmed a plan to fund an expedition for some flat earthers to visit Antarctica and record their observations under rigorous and mutually agreed-on conditions. This is Will Duffy’s project of “The Final Experiment.”
Since then, many flat earthers have begun hedging. Now some flat earthers acknowledge it may be possible that the sun sometimes *doesn’t* set in Antarctica—and insist that this possibility *is* (somehow) consistent with the flat earth model after all.
For instance, Eric Dubay always consistently said the sun DOES set in Antarctica—but recently he started saying that it doesn’t matter whether the sun sets in Antarctica or not. Now he says that what you see in the sky obviously has nothing to do with the shape of the earth.
As far as I can tell, no flat earther has explained *how* a 24-hour Antarctic sun is possible on a flat earth model. Flat earthers believe the sun travels in a circle above the earth, and that the sun sets when it is sufficiently far away (contrary to the laws of optics). *Where* exactly does the sun travel, in order to sometimes be visible from Antarctica but simultaneously invisible from most other areas?
I’m not aware of any flat earthers positing a model where Antarctica isn't a ring around the known world, as is required for a flat earth map that maintains the standard latitude and longitude. Any other model would probably require saying the parallels and meridians are all wrong, which would make it extremely hard to explain how basic navigation works. Even flat earthers have seemingly been reluctant to say everything we know about navigation is wrong, or that every captain and pilot ever has been in on the conspiracy.
Some other flat earthers are saying that the one or two flat earthers who travel to Antarctica may be shills, so it won’t matter even if they say the sun didn’t set. And some are saying there could be a “sun simulator” to project a fake sun into the sky to fool people into thinking the sun didn’t set.
One of the few flat earthers who seems intellectually honest is a guy called Jeranism, who has accepted the offer to travel to Antarctica. He has clearly stated that all the flat earth models render a 24-hour sun impossible, so if there’s a 24-hour sun in Antarctica at any time, that shows the earth isn't flat. He’s been consistent on this and has called out other flat earthers for being cowards. Of course, other flat earthers are now accusing him of being a shill.
I also note that until recently, many flat earthers have habitually claimed that nobody is ever allowed to travel to Antarctica—in total ignorance of the fact that there is Antarctica tourism, and thousands of people travel there every year. Flat earthers have long said they wish they could travel to Antarctica to prove the flat earth. Now that they have a chance, they say accepting the offer means you’re a shill. (Arguably, Antarctica tourism *should* be banned for environmental reasons. But the fact remains that it isn’t banned, but is merely expensive.)

I could accept DC having every other writer call Damian a jerk or some variant thereof if they'd at least remember that he does have friends. Quite a few of them in fact, and that while most people might find his personality abrasive, they don't try to get to know him or understand him.
Heck, its not like the other former Robins were all kindness and smiles. Its just that DC allowed most of them to retain a team or a group of friends that understood and worked off of them well.
All of this to say that I wish we still had Maya or Maps kicking around. Suren was short lived but that could have been nice. And before the series really started trying to damn him, Damian and Wallace had a real nice companionship going on there.
(Also wish we could get Gleason back to write for Damian, but that feels like a long shot for now)
oops forgot to answer this
yeah I do wish DC would allow Damian to have friends ;_; like the reason a lot of people find him abrasive is okay yes it is because he is abrasive XD but thats influenced by the fact that like he doesn't care if random people like him
WRT differences in perception to him and the other robins some is def because yeah DC doesn't care about giving him friends or keeping them there another is b/c early Damian is equally condescending to everyone even if they are socially 'above' him. this both means a) we see this character trait more often and b) the other heroes notice it more often (since tim for example often fanboyed other heroes even if he had his own condescending moments they were for peers)
suren had so much narrative potential w/ Damian I wish that we saw Damian help Suren adjust to civilian life. Damian does deserve his friends back and a writer who genuinely appreciates his confidence and doesn't think its something he needs to lose.

Damian’s Friends
Okay, so I’ve done a little research about some friends that Damian has made, and honestly I think most of these are pretty underused characters.
So we have Maya Ducard, Suren Darga, Jon Kent, Maps Mizogushi + more of the GA kids, Nell Little, Colin Wilkes, and Kathy Branden (sorta).
A lot of his story is based off of redemption. He unlearned everything he was ever taught at age ten. He definitely didn’t want to make friends or do anything normal, but some of the parts of his story that are the most interesting to me are when he interacts with kids his age.
One of my personal favorites is R:SOB. It was a whole comic focused on him with other kids and friendship and redemption. I also loved the stuff in Superman/Supersons because it definitely developed him in the more social aspect of his life which had happened far less then his hero side.
Damian doesn’t need to become a villain, and he doesn’t need another redemption arc, because he has already learned and redeemed himself. While still flawed, he has become a better person and a hero, and that story doesn’t really need to be retold again in my opinion. Obviously there still might be some things that he isn’t sure if they are right or wrong, but you can’t blame him, he’s a teenager. Being a teen is about forming your own opinions and learning to you, what is right and what is wrong.
So the next part of his development would make since to be him working on a team and with kids his age, but I think Teen Titans missed the mark on this for a lot of reasons.
First, Damian has friends that would have probably been better to put on the Titans. They created some new characters for the run, but they already had some great characters they could’ve used.
Also, having the entire team hate him does nothing to progress him as a character and it doesn’t make an interesting story. Obviously working on a hero team, there is going to be conflict, but they don’t really resolve those conflicts in Teen Titans which is one of the reasons it doesn’t really work.
Using characters like Jon and Maya would have worked so much better, because instead of making new friends, the story would be focused on him learning how to work with his teammates and work with them as friends. I’ve already mentioned this, but Gleasons YJ team is still the most wasted potential for a comic in awhile. (And the pre N52 YJ comic). I really think that using characters Damian had already worked with/was friends with + maybe some new characters or characters he hadn’t met yet (Emiko, Wallace, Irey) Would be the perfect blend for a TT/YJ team.
With Jon, Maya, Kathy, Suren, Irey, Wallace and Emiko also maybe a new wondergirl? It would have been close to a reperasentative of a sorta mini Justice League. I am just so mad that they basically regressed all the development Damian had made with his family and in supersons/r:sob.

I love your version of Damian's team so much! DC and their whole 'Damian doesn't have any friends' can go to hell
Thank you so much!!! And I agree! I think it’s dumb that he isn’t allowed to have friends in canon, when Dick, Tim, and Steph all had friends when they were Robin. That was kinda my whole basis for this, because Damian has a lot of great friends (Jon, Maya, Suren, Colin, Maps) and Gleason was going to make a Young Justice team with Jon, Kathy, and Maya with Damian probably showing up at some point. And then DC has all these great legacy characters that have so much potential and would be great on a team (Irey, Jai, Lian, Milagro) so honestly Damian has so much potential to make lots of friends and already had great friends too.
Yeah so screw DC, I’m making the rules. Damian has friends end of story.
