The Battle Begins

The campus grows foggy, like a smokescreen at the intro of a concert. In the sky at the center of campus, a figure can be seen flying around. The buildings and furniture begin to warp and distort, some of which turning into…props? For some sort of video game?

No people are hurt, however, as if the glitching is purposefully avoiding harming anyone.

Suddenly, a booming voice can be heard over the loudspeakers. 

“Welcome, one and all, to your new game! My name is Shiyuu, and I’ll be your host for this amazing adventure!”

The smoke clears, revealing Shiyuu above the school building. A tower is being rapidly constructed at the edge of campus, the surrounding area beginning to look like a final boss level.

“Each one of you will be fighting against monsters designed to stop you on your way to your ultimate quest, defeating the final boss! Defeating the final boss will put an end to this game, but watch out! The tower is heavily guarded! It’s up to YOU to save the campus! Good luck!”

After making his announcement, Shiyuu disappears in a poof of confetti.

Things I've Learned from Modding

I can't believe I've been modding for nearly a year! It's been a crazy adventure and I've learned a ton and met some wonderful people. So here's a list of the things I've learned from modding (with a massive grain of salt). If you ever thought about making a mod, be warned!!

Mods are like chocolate or tattoos, you can’t make just one.

Why just have a simple dialogue mod when you can have events, quests, purchasable items, custom maps, custom sprites…??

Polygamy mods HATE other mods, with a never ending, fiery passion and cause eternal code migraines.

Players think their headcanon is actual canon. And they will inform you of this fact.

Some players will hate your mod. They have an undeniable obligation to tell you they uninstalled it.

No matter how many configuration options you have, it is never enough!

That wonderful and detailed description you wrote will be read by virtually NO ONE.

The players who ask the questions are the ones who did not read the wonderful description.

Minor visual glitches are life-threatening and will be reported as bugs.

If you do anything that does not match a popular sprite mod, you will be accused of NPC death, destruction, and mayhem.

You might spend hours on an incredible event with amazing dialogue and intricate animations, then never hear anything about it. 

If there is one single typo, you WILL hear about it. From multiple people. (I do appreciate these reports tbh)

Rude people will be rude because that's they way they are and for no other reason. Ignore them.

Why do I keep making mods?

I love imagining a story, writing it, coding it, and seeing it come to life.

Wonderful comments from players who enjoyed the mod make it worthwhile! (I am not worthy!!)

So I can live in a fantasy land of my choosing.

I love the power of code and learning how to make things happen.

So I will keep making and updating mods, even though no one reads the description. (Please read the descriptions, I'm begging you!)

THE AESTHETICS OF ABANDONWARE: WHY DEAD SOFTWARE FEELS HOLY

INTRO: Oi, you ever boot up a DOSBox emulator and feel your soul whisper "Amen"? No? Then saddle up, you absolute fetus, 'cause we’re going full pilgrimage through the haunted cathedrals of dead code, cursed shareware, and disc rot salvation. This is for the ones who dream in .BMPs, weep in MIDI, and hit “Yes to All” when copying cracked ZIPs from forgotten FTPs at 3AM. Abandonware ain’t just nostalgia—it’s digital necromancy. And some of us are bloody good at it.

DEAD SOFTWARE = HOLY SHRINE

Let’s be clear: abandonware is software that’s been, well, abandoned. The devs moved on. The publisher collapsed in a puff of VC smoke. The website's now a spammy shell selling beard oil or crack cocaine. The software? Unupdated. Unsupported. Gloriously obsolete.

So why does launching Hover! or Starship Titanic in 2025 feel like entering a chapel with weird lighting and a dial-up modem choir?

Because it’s sacred, mate.

We’re not talking about the games themselves being perfect. A lot of them were janky as hell. We’re talking vibe. These programs exist outside capitalism now. They’re post-market. Post-hype. They don’t want your money, your updates, your logins. They just want your attention—pure and simple. You’re not a user anymore. You’re a curator. A digital monk brushing dust off EXEs and praying to the Gods of IRQ Conflicts and SoundBlaster settings.

WHY IT HITS DIFFERENT

Dead software doesn’t update. It doesn’t push patches or ads. It won’t ask you to connect your Google account to play Math Blaster. It’s a sealed time capsule. Booting it up is like receiving an artifact from a parallel dimension where the internet still had webrings and every kid thought Quake mods would lead to a dream job at ID Software.

But it also represents a lost sincerity. These weren’t games made to hook you for eternity with algorithms. These were games made by six dudes in a shed with a caffeine problem and one working CD burner. And their README files were poetry. Half of them end with “Contact us on AOL or send a floppy to our PO Box.” What do you mean you don’t know what a PO Box is?

FOR THE ZOOMIES: YOU JUST MISSED THE GOLDEN ROT

Listen up, juniors. If you were born after 2005, you missed the age when the internet was held together with chewing gum, JPEG artifacts, and unspoken respect.

Back then, finding a rare game was an adventure. Not an algorithm. You didn’t scroll TikTok and get spoon-fed vibes. You climbed through broken Geocities links and begged on IRC channels. You learned to read. You learned to search. You learned that “No-CD crack” doesn’t mean what your mum thinks it means.

So here’s your initiation: go download something weird from a forgotten archive. No guides. No Discord server. Just the raw, terrifying joy of not knowing if you’ve just installed Robot Workshop Deluxe or a Russian trojan. Welcome to the cult.

THE TWO-YEAR RULE

Online communities? They’re mayflies with usernames. Peak lifespan? Two years.

Here’s the cycle:

A niche game/tool/art style gets revived.

People form a forum/Reddit/Discord.

A zine or remix scene emerges.

Drama. Mods quit. Someone forks the project.

Everyone vanishes.

This cycle has always existed. The only difference now is that it’s faster. But dead software bypasses this. It’s post-community. You don’t have to join a scene. You are the scene. Every time you open it up, you’re plugging into a ghost socket. You’re chatting with echoes. It’s beautiful.

CONCLUSION: THIS IS A RELIGION NOW. PRACTICE IT.

Abandonware isn’t about gaming. It’s about reclaiming reverence. About saying “This mattered” even if no one else remembers it did. It’s about surfing the ruins, not for loot, but for meaning. There’s holiness in opening a program that hasn’t been touched in decades and seeing it still works. Still waits for you. Still loads that same intro MIDI with the confidence of a god.

So light a candle. Install a CRT filter. Screenshot that low-res menu and print it on a t-shirt. You’re not just playing with the past. You’re preserving the bones of the digital age.

guys, guys, guys. jax isn't an npc; he's a game dev/mod who got trapped in the circus.

i'm sure someone has already put forth this theory, but with the series still being in its early stages, it's hard to say exactly which direction it's going. while i don't think the npc theory is bad, i think it lacks a foundation and is more so the fandom's attempt to justify jax's moral greyness or give him depth where there currently isn't any. i just wanted to share some of my own thoughts about what his deal might be.

firstly, his design, which is honestly just my own speculation but bear with me. i know goose made some jokes about his clothes being farmer's overalls, but when i look at him, i almost get mechanic vibes? like if he wasn't such a prick, he'd be in charge of fixing any bugs that crop up during the adventures, which is pretty much what a moderator does.

speaking of which, he has keys to all the rooms, which is already pretty sketchy in itself, but it makes sense if you consider that he helped make the circus. naturally, he'd have them on hand in case he needed to access any areas of potential danger. to me, it's a bit like having cheat codes, which definitely gives him an upper hand above the other circus members. (but again, it's not like he's ever going to do his job.)

there's also the "figurine thing," which is probably either a throwaway joke or a thinly-veiled attempt at foreshadowing the npcs-- since their models resemble figurines-- but it's still worth noting. if we assume that the "figurine thing" is referring to the npcs-- which it probably isn't, but again, bear with me-- then it shows just how much jax knows about the circus. as far as i remember, none of the other characters have ever brought up the outside of the map, but obviously, if jax made the game, he's going to know its layouts and inner workings like the back of his hand. i won't go so far as to say he's all-knowing, but i'm sure he knows a lot more than he lets on, and i have a feeling we're going to see that in later episodes.

if he really can predict caine's adventures and whatnot, since he designed them, it explains why he's so unfazed by everything that happens at the circus, from zooble getting taken by the gloinks to running into the gloink queen. the only time he really seems to be surprised is when the game glitches-- when the one gloink started bugging out, when kaufmo abstracted, etc.

i think the mod theory explains jax's personality and motivations. when he first arrived at the circus, there might've been a time when he acted more responsibly, fixing all the bugs, trying to stop the abstractions, etc. he could've been caine's right-hand at keeping everything under control. but maybe he slowly gave up these responsibilities when he realized that people were going to get abstracted no matter what, as we can see from the crossed-off doors in the pilot. it's very possible that he became consumed by his mod privileges when he began acting more recklessly and faced zero repercussions for his actions. essentially, he's a step above everyone else in terms of knowledge, awareness, and grants of power-- probably just below caine on the power ladder, though pomni could also rival him as she comes to learn more about the circus. depending on how jax uses his abilities, he could either help everyone find the exit or slowly lead them towards abstraction, and given what goose has said about the future of the series, it's not looking very optimistic for anyone involved.

but what do i know? this theory could be completely nonsensical and riddled with plot holes. i just like to hyperanalyze jokes 🥲

Wants/Fears Sanity 3t2 Traits Edition #1

It's modding time!

This mod is for the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection.

The mod: Ys2g_3t2_CTedit_VacationWants_adventurous ● Version 1 - Trait exclusive ● Version 1.2 - Sims will also go through a check that makes sure their Travel interest is greater than 5 points (6+) IF they don’t have the Adventurous trait.

I am open to other ideas for checks I could add!

All it does is allows Adventurous Sims (or ones who like travel) to be the only ones that can roll wants to go on any type of vacation.

As a long-time Sims 3 player, I tried to capture this trait in this tiny mod because there are only a few largely inconsequential traits mods for it. In the Sims 3, the “Adventurous” trait is only concerned with vacations. So, I figured why not give Adventurous Sims in the Sims 2 some vacation benefits as well?

Does anyone else have any ideas for vacation benefits for this trait? I already have one idea: better tour outcomes, but that will be a challenge to code I am sure ... I also have another mod I made for the Adventurous trait coming out soon!

I tested it in a primary hood and in a University hood with no problems, I had a glitch where a University student was getting vacation wants, and once I fixed it, the want would simply reroll upon starting the lot. Not sure about other types of hoods though. Please turn on testingcheats and let me know about any errors or wants that shouldn't be there.
