Rip Torn: A Retrospective

Rip Torn died on July 9th at age 88. That he lived that long is nothing short of miraculous.

In the summer of 1969, Rip Torn was drunkenly screaming through New York’s West Village on his motorcycle when he slammed it into a police cruiser. Torn broke his leg in the accident, but didn’t notice. The next morning he got up, got on a plane, and flew to Paris where he was set to star in Joseph Strick’s film version of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer. He shot the entire film all hopped up on painkillers on an untreated busted leg,. And you know what? He still gives a remarkable performance. It wasn’t the only time he worked with broken bones, either.

For over 60 years, Torn carried on in the proud tradition of John Barrymore, Errol Flynn, Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, and Lawrence Tierney as the last of the great Hollywood hellions. In between insane drunken escapades, he was nominated for Emmys and Tonys and Oscars, he established himself as one of America’s most respected character actors, a man with a knack for making even a small role a pivotal one, and he was in Every Movie and TV Show Ever Made. Next time you watch something take a close look at the credits and you’ll see.

Torn’s given name was Elmore Rual Torn, Jr., but was nicknamed Rip as a boy, as was tradition among all the Torn men. He was born and raised and educated in Texas, studying animal husbandry in college before turning to acting.

The motivation behind the decision was different than most. He hitchhiked to California to break into the movies not because he wanted to be a big star, but because he thought it would be an easy way to raise enough money to buy himself a ranch. Things didn’t work out quite so zip bang as he’d planned, though he did earn small roles on TV and made his feature debut in an uncredited role as a dentist in Elia Kazan’s great and scandalous 1956 film Baby Doll. Kazan hired him again the following year to play another uncredited but extremely important role in the equally great Face in the Crowd.

Although he wasn’t making the kind of money he needed to buy that ranch, he was getting enough acting jobs along the way to start taking the whole enterprise a bit more seriously. He moved to New York to study at the Actor’s studio, worked in theater both on and off Broadway, and from the mid-’50s to the mid-60s established himself on TV in everything from Playhouse 90 to Thriller to Route 66 to The Untouchables. After that things took off. There was just something sinister about Torn, those wicked eyes of his, that crooked-toothed leer, the whole rat-like demeanor, that suited him for villainous roles of all kinds. Plus he was a chameleon who could shift his whole look and stature with the simplest change of accent. He would go on to play Judas in King of Kings, countless presidents, doctors, senators, military officers and judges. He played rednecks and gangsters, cowboys and spies and executives. He played Walt Whitman twice, was in a whole bunch of Tennessee William’s plays (on Broadway, TV and film). Yeah, like I said, between the mid-’50s and the present, he was in every damn thing ever made. Trying to summarize his career is pretty much impossible, but there was a stretch there from the mid-60s to the late 70s when he was top billed when he was turning small supporting roles into leads, when he was moving easily between TV, experimental films, and big budget Hollywood jobs, and when he was starting to earn himself a reputation as a wild man.

Looking back on it now, it’s hard to imagine the kind of talent, both in front of and behind the camera, that came together on the 1965 period gambling picture The Cincinnati Kid. It was originally a Sam Peckinpah film with a script by Ring Lardner. Then Peckinpah was fired (surprise!) and Norman Jewison was brought in to direct. He thought the script was too self important and talky, so he brought in Terry Southern. He also gave Hal Ashby his first big break, bringing him in as editor and assistant director. Steve McQueen stars as a hotshot young poker player in ‘30s-era New Orleans. Karl Malden is a former hotshot on the skids. Jack weston is the loud whiny guy. Ann-Margaret is the bad girl, Tuesday Weld is the good girl, and Edward G. Robinson is the old man, the undisputed champ, the stud poker king feared by everyone.

Ah, then there’s Rip Torn. His name’s deep in the credits but the whole film turns around him. He plays the slick and sleazy Southern Gentleman who will stop at nothing to see the Robinson character toppled. See, Robinson beat him at poker once, and for a Southern Gentleman of his stature there’s nothing in the world worse than losing. There’s one scene in particular, Torn’s showpiece here, in which he tries to blackmail the dealer (Malden) into cheating, and though it doesn’t sound like much nobody can muster up the cool menace like Torn. Oooohhh, he’s such a rotten son of a bitch.

Four years later he starred in Moses Ginsberg’s first film, Coming Apart, an experimental number that’s been called “More a Happening than an actual movie,.” Filmed with a single static camera to recreate the feel of a documentary, Torn stars as an unbalanced psychiatrist who torments and confuses his female patients, eventually going completely batty himself. It all takes place in one small room shot by that one unmoving camera. It’s at turns compelling and unbelievably tedious, and if it weren’t for Torn (thank god for that Actor’s Studio improv training) it would be unwatchable.

Around this same time Dennis Hopper cast Torn to be in Easy Rider. Then at what was either a production meeting or a cocktail party in New York (depending on who’s telling the story), Hopper and Torn got into a bit of a ruckus over whether or not all Texans were rednecks out to kill hippies. A knife was pulled (though Peter Fonda would later claim it was a butter knife, or maybe a fork, or maybe both). Next thing you know, Torn was thrown off the picture, and Hopper cast Jack Nicholson in his place.

About a year later Torn joined the cast of Norman Mailer’s improvisational experiment, Maidstone. Essentially it was a raucous, drunken three-day party out at Grove Press founder Barney Rossett’s Long Island estate around which Mailer tried to film himself as a director trying to shoot a movie. As the story goes, before shooting started each actor was given a card briefly describing his or her character, and that was as close as anyone got to a script. One character, however, was given a card at random informing the holder that his character was in fact a CIA assassin whose job it was to kill Mailer. The card’s recipient was supposed to be kept a secret from everyone in the cast, including Mailer.

Well, according to Rossett there was a little confusion there. Maybe it was the booze, or maybe the card simply wasn’t worded clearly. In any case Torn (naturally) got the card, but instead of thinking his character was supposed to kill Mailer, he somehow got the idea that HE was supposed to kill Mailer. Lucky for Mailer, too, as the confusion resulted in the only scene in the film anyone remembers.

After the shoot was over and most everyone had gone home, Mailer and his family are walking back toward the house when they’re stopped by a grinning and quite mad Torn, who is also clutching a small hatchet. The cameras are rolling and you can tell this was something Mailer was not prepared for. Nor was he prepared when Torn goes after his skull with the hatchet. The two wrestle each other to the ground, Mailer bites Torn’s ear, Torn leaves a deep gash in Mailer’s scalp, and Mailer’s wife and children scream in horror until a couple crew members pull Torn off him.

And that, my friends, is entertainment!

(The next morning Rossett found a drunken midget floating in his swimming pool, but that’s another story.)

Then came the motorcycle accident and shooting Tropic of Cancer on a broken leg. As it happens there were two films based on Henry Miller novels filming simultaneously two blocks apart in Paris. Jens Jorgen Thorsen’s Quiet Days in Clichy starred Paul Valjean, an American dancer who looked an awful lot like Miller, but neither sounded nor acted like him. Torn, meanwhile, looked absolutely nothing like Miller, but somehow by adopting just the slightest hint of a Brooklyn accent (and on all those painkillers) was somehow able to embody him completely. It’s a gritty, funny, poetic film and Torn is great, though to be fair it should be noted that Clichy was dirtier.

Also in 1970, Torn spoke out against the war in Vietnam on a TV show, and a few nights later someone fired a bullet through his window. It was a hell of a year for him.

In ‘73s Darryl Duke film, Payday, Torn gives what he himself would later refer to as his best performance. Or maybe his favorite. In any case he’s really something as Maury Dann, a womanizing, hard-drinking, bastard son of a bitch of a second-rate country singer. Dann and his band are on tour through the South as Dann screws and screws over everyone around him, from band members to family, to pretty much every woman he meets. He never quite hit the top, but insists on acting and being treated like he has. Toward the end he even talks his chauffer into taking a murder rap for him, since he has to get to a show. It’s an extremely dark, cynical, and painfully accurate portrait of the country music business of the early ‘70s, and Torn does all his own singing. It makes for a nice counterpoint to Robert Duvall’s quiet, soft-spoken, and sensitive country singer in Tender Mercies from a decade later.

Although again his name is buried deep in the credits of Larry Cohen’s 1977 biopic The Secret Files of J. Edgar Hoover the entire film revolves around him. He narrates, after all, and gives another memorable performance as a young man who decides to join the Bureau after his father (another agent) is gunned down by a two-bit hood on the street. After seeing what’s going on in the FBI, though, and after being punished himself for a minor indiscretion, he tries to bring Hoover down a notch or two. In what could have been a hamfisted cartoon, both Cohen and Torn (and star Broderick Crawford near the end of his career) manage a shockingly human portrait.

As a flipside to Torn’s tendency to turn minor supporting roles into leads, there was 1978’s Coma, the medical conspiracy thriller directed by Michael Chrichton based on the Robin Cook novel. Torn was fourth-billed behind Genevieve Bujold, MIchael Douglas, and Richard Widmark. And sure, Torn’s character, Dr. George, is the film’s central villain, the man behind a Boston hospital’s fiendish conspiracy to harvest human organs and sell them on the black market, but he only appears in one scene, and speaks roughly four lines. It’s unclear whether this was the plan from the start, an attempt to turn his character into another Harry Lime or Mabuse, or if maybe all his other scenes were cut after Torn went after Crichton with a hatchet (we can only hope). In any case he was missed. He might have livened up what was otherwise a pretty godawful picture.

As Torn grew older and a little larger and his hair started getting thinner, two things happened. He began playing more authority figures, which only makes sense I guess. He had that look and sound about him. He also started doing more comedies and genre films. Sometimes he even combined the two, playing Ronald Reagan in ‘82s Airplane II: The Sequel.

In ‘91 he was Bob Diamond, the charming, sleazy, and utterly ineffective lawyer trying to give Albert Brooks a boost out of Purgatory in Defending Your Life. He was the sinister CEO in the otherwise dreadful Robocop 3. He even began lending his voice to animated features and video games (usually playing a god of some kind).

Then in 1999 Dennis Hopper was a guest on Leno and told a few old Easy Rider stories, including the one about how Torn had pulled a knife on him at a party. Well, Torn, remembering things a bit differently, sued him for defamation.

It’s pretty hilarious if you think about it; these two guys who were both completely out of their heads in the late ‘60s going to court to determine which one of them was behaving badly. I mean, they both had reputations to maintain.

Well, most of the witnesses agreed with Torn that it was Hopper who pulled the knife (except for Peter Fonda, who remembered all kinds of different utensils), and the court ordered Hopper to pay Torn nearly half a million in damages. It was all kind of silly. I mean, it’s not like the story cost him any work. Hell, trying to literally kill Norman Mailer on camera didn’t even cost him any work. But I guess pride’s a funny thing.

After that he continued to work regularly, as Agent Zed in the Men in Black films, in sit-coms, in made-for-TV films, christ, anything that came along. Every director I’ve ever heard talk about Torn can’t praise him highly enough for his talent and professionalism (except maybe Mailer), though given his admitted temper, it’s also possible they’re just scared of him. He was nominated for six Emmys for his role on the Larry Sanders Show, and came to be recognized by a whole new generation as the executive Alec Baldwin worships but wants to replace on 30 Rock.

Along the way he set himself the task of repairing any damage his reputation as a hellraiser might have suffered as a result of that Hopper lawsuit. The DUIs started adding up. Or at least getting noticed, in part thanks to the actor’s tendency to swing on the arresting officers. Along with being the president of the Extreme Dodgeball League (who knew it even existed?) it seems he was also an extreme regular at a bar near his Connecticut home. Every once in awhile the bartender himself would tip off the cops after Torn headed for his car. I’m not sure if that bartender’s still there, but even after being fingered like that Torn remained a regular, though he didn’t always drive. And that in itself might have caused some problems.

After returning home from the bar one night in 2010, Torn found his keys didn’t work in the lock. Seeing no alternative, the 79-year-old was forced to break into his own house. He was probably surprised a few minutes later, just as he got his shoes off and was making himself comfortable, when the cops arrived and informed him that he wasn’t in his house at all, but had broken into a nearby bank. And the cops were probably surprised to find Torn was carrying a loaded handgun. Yeah, he’s not the only one who’s been there, as I think many of us can attest.

Once it was clarified that it was not Torn’s intention to rob the bank, he was given a two and a half year suspended sentence and three years probation.

The arrest prompted the tightassed, no fun creators of Thirty Rock to kill off his character, but he remained as busy as ever, including an uncredited role as an alien in Men in Black Three.

He once proudly noted that he’s never missed a performance. He’s worked with broken legs, broken arms and ankles, and once while doing a play he passed a kidney stone on opening night. He was a rare, tough old bird, a vanishing breed, and one of my heroes. We won’t see his like again.

TOP 10 LEAST RECOMMENDED STORIES OF 2019′S REVIEWS

I don’t want to be rude, honestly. I appreciate what these people were trying to do, but something went wrong. At least, from my point of view. This doesn’t mean that the people involved are bad professionals. Not all stories can be greatest hits. Well, this is a list of stories that I just cannot recommend.

NUMBER TEN NO FATHER FOR JIMMY! SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #128 (1970)

My problem with most of the stories in this list is how they disrespect the reader. In this story, many of the “facts” are just random bullshit. There is a limit for suspension of disbelief. Here the mayans (who are still around and kidnapping gingers they confuse with gods, in public touristic sites), mostly fit the needs of the writer. It was so much easier to create a new civilization, just for this story.

NUMBER NINE AMERICA VS. THE JUSTICE SOCIETY (1985)

My problem with this story is that there is no need for it. It’s just Thomas making the Justice Society tell stories about their past, with no real importance to the plot and then having a very over-complicated story around a not very bright Batman of Earth-2, solving a crime indirectly. And the villain kills himself. Until he appears again during Crisis, of course.

NUMBER EIGHT MIGHTY MUTANIMALS #8 (1993)

Some things were created with the illusion of (mostly) making money, and when they don’t work... those things are abandoned and forgotten. Such is the case of Archie Comics’ Mighty Mutanimals. They couldn’t land a cartoon and toys deal, so they decided to kill them all in one panel. Hey Kids, Comics!

But this issue has nothing to do with that. After several crossovers, the Mutanimals go into a new mission that consist on vomiting facts about whale hunting (and lessons in poor broken Spanish). I am actually impressed this wasn’t written by Steve Murphy.

NUMBER SEVEN TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES / SAVAGE DRAGON, SAVAGE DRAGON #22 (1995)

Speaking of ambition, the TMNT / Savage Dragon crossovers are never a full experience, you have to know what is going on Savage Dragon to read them. This is great if you are a Savage Dragon fan, but not so great if you are a fan of TMNT. The story is boring and you will forget about it in 1 minute.

NUMBER SIX THE FLASH #64 (2019)

BY JOSHUA WILLIAMSON, RAFA SANDOVAL, JORDI TARRAGONA, TOMEU MOREY AND CHRIS BURNHAM.

It isn’t enough to explain what your character is. You need to show the reader what you mean. In this story we are led to believe that Barry is a very smart man, just because Batman says so. With Williamson, Flash is always one of the smartest men in the universe, you know, because other characters say so. But he never really shows this intelligence in his stories. This is very annoying. After sixty-something issues, there is still nothing unique about Barry Allen.

But nothing about this issue feels natura. This is a tie-in with Heroes in Crisis (that miraculously didn’t make it into this list), which is already awful, and it is also a cross-over with Tom King’s Batman... that is also going nowhere at the time I am writing this. So it is hard to tell who to blame for this issue. I don’t think this story was written by one person, and I am under the impression, it was written by editorial decisions. At least I hope so.

NUMBER FIVE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #245 (1985)

The reason this issue made it so high in the list it’s because it is quite boring, unnecessary and generic. It doesn’t really need Steel in it. Any character could have done the same. Sadly, it is a Crisis tie-in (but you can skip it).

NUMBER FOUR YOUNGBLOOD

These Rob Liefeld early issues are very hard to understand, and just looking at the art doesn’t really help. You will feel completely taken out of the story by the horrible anatomy and the horrible dialogue.

NUMBER THREE AVENGERS #200 (1980)

BY JIM SHOOTER (ALLEGEDLY), GEORGE PÉREZ (PARTIALLY), DAVID MICHELINIE (PERHAPS), BOB LAYTON (MAYBE), DAN GREEN AND BEN SEAN.

I honestly think, this story could have gone higher in the list, but because no one want to acknowledge they wrote the thing, I think at least there are enough signs here to avoid the issue. However, if you like feeling outraged by a comic, give it a try.

In this issue, Carol Danvers comes back, pregnant, gives birth, then the baby grows up to reveal he is his own father that raped Carol to have himself. Then the Avengers let her go with him to the rape dimension.

Chris Claremont would later “fix” this story as much as possible.

NUMBER TWO BENDIS’ SUPERMAN (2019)

Mostly by Brian Michael Bendis, Ivan Reis and Joe Prado.

Superman is one of those comics that suffers a lot when a new writers comes in, without understanding the characters. Mostly because it is pretty obvious right away. Add to that, when a writers wants to completely ignore what was loved by fans, it’s just doing things to generate controversy, and that doesn’t make good storytelling (generally).

At least when John Byrne updated the character, it was a reboot. Bendis came just after a successful run that is still canon, but the way he thinks Lois Lane “functions” and his aging of Jonathan Kent, plus Superman being a complete different character, is making this run one of the lowest points in Superman history.

NUMBER ONE KING’S BATMAN (2019)

Mostly by Tom King, Mikel Janín, Tony S. Daniel and Jorge Fornés.

Many things have been said about this run by outraged fans. I do not agree with some of them... but I have to agree whenever it comes to story. Tom King demonstrated a lot of craft with his Mister Miracle series. But here, he falls prey to lazy writing. Add to that some editorial meddling and you have a three-year run that you should mostly skip. There are good stories in the middle of this run, but in the end, it doesn’t make sense. King took the main Batman hostage for three years (and we are about to get it back).

The good thing is that every now and then, the same teams deliver good stuff. So as I said, not all of them can be Greatest Hits, but the top two are something to take seriously, as these are the two main DC properties, and with those titles failing, I do not feel motivated to read the rest of the line. I cannot be the only person going through this.

GARBAGE mit neuem Video "Wolves" vom kommenden Album

Garbage haben gerade ihre brandneue Single “Wolves” und das dazugehörige Video der Welt vorgestellt, das vom chilenischen Filmregisseur, Animator und Maler Javi.MiAmor gedreht wurde.

“Wolves” ist der Nachfolger des Album-Titeltracks “No Gods No Masters”, der bereits große Radiounterstützung sowie starke Playlist-Unterstützung von Spotify (“New Music Friday”, “Rock The World! All New Rock”, “Weekly Buzz”) und Apple Music (“New In Alternative”, “Rock Best New Songs”, “New In Rock”, “New In Indie”) erhalten hat und von Kerrang! als “Excellent” und von Clash als “viszeral and blood-thirsty” beschrieben wurde.

Shirley Manson sagt über das kantige und kraftvolle Wolves: “Dieser Song erinnert mich an mein jüngeres Ich, als es zwei Seiten meiner Persönlichkeit gab. Ich habe so viele Menschen in meinem Leben verletzt, sowohl wissentlich als auch unwissentlich, da bin ich mir sicher. Aber wenn man jung und im Überlebensmodus ist, ähnlich wie eine Baby-Klapperschlange, hat man keine Ahnung, wie stark das eigene Gift ist. Aber es hat die Kraft zu töten. Du bist nur da draußen und hast Spaß… Das ist der Popsong der Platte.”

Produziert von Garbage und ihrem langjährigen Kollaborationspartner Billy Bush, wurden die Samen für das neue Album “No Gods No Masters” im Sommer 2018 in der Wüste in Palm Springs gepflanzt. Das Quartett traf sich in einem Haus, das einem Verwandten von Steve Marker gehört, und skizzierte zwei Wochen lang das Skelett des Albums, jammte und experimentierte. Mit den Demos aus dieser Session gingen sie dann getrennte Wege, bevor sie sich in Los Angeles wieder trafen, um das Album fertigzustellen.

Garbage veröffentlichen auch eine Deluxe-CD/Digital-Version von “No Gods No Masters”, die Coverversionen klassischer Stücke enthält, darunter David Bowies “Starman” und “Because the Night”, geschrieben von Patti Smith und Bruce Springsteen. An Garbage’s Interpretation von “Because the Night” ist auch die US-Punkrockband Screaming Females beteiligt.

Das Deluxe-Album enthält die seltenen Garbage-Tracks “No Horses”, “On Fire”, “Time Will Destroy Everything”, “Girls Talk”, “The Chemicals” und “Destroying Angels”, wobei bei den drei letztgenannten Brody Dalle, Brian Aubert und John Doe bzw. Exene Cervenka mitwirken.

Das Vinyl des Albums ist standardmäßig neongrün. Garbage veröffentlichen außerdem eine limitierte weiße Vinyl über ihren offiziellen Artist Store sowie eine exklusive limitierte pinke Vinyl als Teil der diesjährigen RSD Drops am 12. Juni. Die Band wird im November mit Blondie durch Großbritannien touren. Das Album kann man hier vorbestellen.

Music is life, that's why our hearts have beats

Oh, ooh, oooh my god. Mit diesen simplen Worten möchten wir diesen Eintrag beginnen. Und Ihr dürft euch sicher sein, auch diesmal wirds euch die Schlüppi flattern lassen.

Es ist ein wenig her das wir dazu gekommen sind etwas aus unserem Alltag zu schreiben, hat ein ganz einfachen Grund, wir müssen selbst immer erst einmal verarbeiten was wir erlebt haben.

Und auf gehts.

Nachdem uns Tara am Morgen in Carterville einfach mal so ein typisches American Breakfast vor den Latz geknallt hatte ging es auf in den Shawnee National Forrest. Kein Naturwunder, aber ein schönes Fleckchen Erde um Mutter Natur zu bewundern. Hier sind die #GARDENOFTHEGODS Felsen zu nennen. Eine Ansammlung von genialen Felsen, welche über den kompletten Forrest ragen. Man kommt sich vor als ob man über allem stehen würde. Eben on top of the world. Alex musste die Muskeln spielen lassen und jeden Fels erklimmen, wobei beim Dirki wieder die Vernunft siegte. Am Ende hatten wir aber Beide den Eindruck im Elbsandsteingebirge gewesen zu sein. Dann noch ein kurzer Hike zu einem See, rein da und wieder retour. Einer fragte Dirk ob er noch stehen könnte im See und wie groß er wäre, na 1.82m antwortete Dirk. Nur der Mann hatte es net verstanden. Nun weis Dirk auch warum, wir denken hier ja in Inch gelle🙈 Dann meinte Tara uns unbedingt noch Tunnelhill anschauen zu müssen. Hey die haben ein Dorf nach dem Tunnel benannt, nur weil da mal en Zug durch gefahren ist. Crazy….Naja, wir hatten Spass darin, denn für ein paar Schattenspiele hats gelangt.

Nächste Station, #NASHVILLE oder auch #SMASHVILLE. Leute ganz ehrlich, was habt ihr bis jetzt über Nashville gehört??? Nicht viel, oder. Nun so solls nicht bleiben, weil hier hat die Zündschnurr der Musik angefangen zu brennen und das mit richtig Schmakkes. Wir fahren zu unserem Hostel, die Strassen brechend voll, alle in gelb. Aus jeder Ecke, jedem Fenster dröhnte Livemusick, sodass uns schon beim vorbei fahren die Kinnlade auf der Fussmatte vom Auto lag. Angekommen in einem schweine, obergeilem Hostel #NASHVILLEHOSTEL, bot uns der erste Zimmer Genosse en kräftigen Schluck aus seiner Wodka Flasche an. Es war 15:00. Also raus auf die Strasse, im übrigen war #STANLEYCUP=Endspiel Eishockey. Die ganze Stadt standt Kopf. Man wusste nicht in welche Bar als erstes, die Musik knallte dich an jeder Ecke weg…. und Mädels ein kleiner Tipp für zu Hause, schaut euch mal auf Pinterest den #NASHVILLESTYLE an, da geht eim doch der Dings hoch. Übrigens wer sich fragt wo der #HONKYTONK her kommt, dann seid ihr genau richtig in #SMASHVILLE. Dirk hatte so lang danach gesucht, das er dann einfach weg war. Alex besorgt in die nächste Bar, his Favourit #FAMOUSNASHVILLE, und alleine weiter gemacht. Dirk hatte den Weg ins Hostel gesucht und auch gefunden.

In #NASHVILLE auch unbedingt den #FARMERSMARKET machen und bitte bitte pfeift euch nen Burger bei #PHARMACYBURGER rein. Der kreetscht euch weg. Mit Fahrrad gehts doppelt so schnell dort hin, aber nach den Preisen schauen. Erste 30min sind for free und danach wird richtig kassiert. Der Spass mit dem nicht richtig schauen hat uns nähmlich in Boston schlappe 72$ gekostet.

Danach ging es endlich, endlich nach Memphis. Ihr erinnert euch der Termietenmann aus Cleveland hatte so von seiner Heimatstadt geschwärmt. Memphis, the Home of #ELVIS, #GIBSONGUITARS, #MISSISSIPPI und #FEDEX. Unser erster Eindruck war so einer wenn du in nen leeren Kühlschrank schaust. Wir wunderten uns warum in jeden Vorgarten überall so viel Grünzeug lag. Das Wundern ging schnell zu riesen Augen über als wir an unserem Aiebnb Haus ankamen, ein riesen Baum umgestürzt im Garten lag, wir keinen Code für die Tür hatten und als dann jemand kam, uns auch noch klar gemacht wurde, das es kein Strom gebe. Es gab wohl en dicken Sturm vor 9 Tagen. Also keine Klima, kein W Lan und auch kein Fridge……

Nun ja auch damit kommen Backpacker aus. Am nächsten Tag gabs toten Stille zwischen uns bis Dirk mal kurz en Zickenanfall hatte. Lag wahrscheinlich am Kaffeetiefpegel. Wir haben uns den Mississippi angeschaut, auch seine komplette Nachbildung in Miniatur und haben den Nachmittag jeder für uns verbracht und siehe da, schon war alles wieder palletti. Dirk saß vorm Haus und hatte gar nicht registriert das der Strom wieder ging, in dem Moment kam ein Typ auf ihn zu der auch ein Zimmer via Airbnb in diesem gewissen Haus mieten wollte. Wir kamen ins Gespräch und es ist kein Joke! Der Typ kam aus Erfurt und lebt seid 20 Jahren in der USA. Hammer wir haben sicherlich 1.5 Stunden über Gott und die Welt gesprochen. Alex kam dann auch irgendwann gelaufen, aus der City, locker 6 Meilen gewesen. Am Abend, mit beruhigten und vereinten Gemütern, in die City. Und kaum angekommen gings schon wieder los, Musik, Bier, Frauen, Guitarren und und und. Die #BEALESTREET ist genau so verrückt wie wir. Ein paar smoked ribs, typisch für Memphis, hinter geschmissen und das ganze mit paar Bier spühlen, schon kann es weiter gehen. Es ist alles so unreal, dass es schon wieder genial ist. Am nächsten Tag gings weiter nach Jackson Mississippi, darüber hat schon Bruno Mars gesungen. Also sollte es doch ein Besuch wert sein, dachten wir. Auf dem Weg dahin wollten wir ne Runde im #GRENADALAKE planschen gehen, war nichts. Der See war fürs Baden geschlossen, da er zu wenig Wasser hat. Das Teil ist ca. 4 km2 groß und ist geschlossen zum Baden. Die spinn die Amies. Naja also weiter nach Jackson zu unserer Airbnb Unterkunft bei Steve. Keiner da, keinen erreicht weder telefonisch, noch Message. Der Nachbar öffnete Dirk die Tür und das erste was er zu seiner Frau sagte HEY THIS IS A WHITE MAN. Na da wars uns grad andersrum. Wir haben ein Hotel gefunden, welches unsere Situation verstand und gab uns tolle Rate. Wer weis für was das alles passiert ist, gell. Wir waren dann am nächsten Tag nochmal kurz in Jackson, ausgestorben und nicht wirklich für einen Stopp wert. Nach der Enttäuschung ging es weiter nach New Orleans, runter vom Highway, sonst bekommst du im Auto die Vollmeise. Vorbei an nicht enden wollenden Baumwollfeldern haben wir einen kleinen Umweg über Viksburg am Mississippi gemacht, der hat sich absolut gelohnt, denn genau in dem Moment wo wir ankamen, hat ein riesen Mississippi Schaufelraddampfer mit total kitschiger Dampforgel Musik abgelegt. Keine Zeit verlieren und schnell weiter. Wenn man nach New Orleans rein fährt, geht der Highway erst mal quer über den See. Imposant. Angekommen im nicht gewollten Hostel, da wir ja eigendlich noch bei Steve sein sollten, haben wir gleich gemerkt das wir alles richtig gemacht hatten. #THEQUISBY ist auch für jeden nicht Hostler ein Besuch wert. Mit der historischen Tram, welche immer noch in #NOLA = New Orleans fahren, in die City und in das Frenchquarter. Was sollen wir sagen, scheiss auf Nashville, Memphis… die Stadt hat uns wirklich total kaputt gemacht. Bars, Livemusik, Alkohol, Menschen ohne Ende. Scheisse Geil. So geil das Dirk seit dem erkältet ist. Nächsten Morgen haben wir grad so den Check Out rechtzeitig hin bekommen. Aber wir waren nicht die Schlimmsten. Es gab welche die sind um 10 Uhr morgens von der letzten Nacht wieder gekommen. Wir haben ne Bahnfahrt durch NOLA gemacht, mit dem Ticket vom letzten Tag👌, 3$ für en 24 Stunden Ticket, echt gut. Danach wollten wir unsere 3 tägige AIRBNB Unterkunft anschauen und haben es auch grad gefunden. Leute die Fotos werden es euch irgendwann beweisen. Ein Wohnklo ist luxeriös…. Eine Gartenlaube in die genau das Doppelstockbett gepasst hat. Der Rangierbahnhof der Bahn war ca. 15m entfernt, bei jedem Zug hat das Bett gewackelt wie die Sau, Mücken über Mücken. Stickig und ahhhh just iggitt. Naja wir habens mit Humor überstanden. Wir können und wollen euch keine Tipps für NOLA geben, denn das muss man selbst erlebt haben, es ist einfach der Wahnsinn. Nur so viel, zieht euch am Morgen ein #BLOODYMARY rein, probiert dazu #EGGSBENEDIGT und erlebt die Stadt in vollen Zügen. Wir haben uns an irgend einem Tag mitten in einer #PRIDE = SCHWULEN & LESBEN Parade wieder gefunden. Haben nun jeder 20 farbige Perlenketten im Gepäck und waren im #BACHELORPARTYHEADQUARTER. Den dritten Tag haben wir der Erkundung des Mississippi Delta gespendet, unbedingt NICHT machen. Absolut uninteresant und es gibt nix zu sehen. Ausser der letzte Fischerhafen in Venice war noch ganz lustig. Einen Friedhof haben wir uns noch in NOLA angeschaut. Kennt ihr aus vielen Filmen, so kruftig. Nun ja und damit haben wir die Musikstrasse verlassen und New Orleans mit einem kleinen Monzoon Regen den Rücken gekehrt. Diese Tage haben wirklich alle Budgets gesprengt und die Dollar sind uns quasi durch die Finger gerinnt. Was solls, so spielt das Leben und wir spielen gern mit. Wir sitzen in diesem Moment auf dem Deck eines Segelbootes welches im Hafen von Panama City, Florida liegt, schreiben diesen Text, hören dabei unsere Musik und geniessen das Leben. Die Mützen tun immer noch ihren Dienst, um die langen Haare zu verstecken. Auch vor der prallen Sonne zu schützen. Heut Abend sind wir eingeladen beim Besitzer des Bootes, seine Frau kocht wohl unheimlich gut. Wir werden es schmecken gell. Und ihr werdet es erfahren, spätestens im nächste Text. However because the matrix world is man made it is not real; it is transient and is not the highest reality. In fact, everything made by God is the only thing that is real whether humans accept this fact or not. The tragedy is that your story if properly understood is REALER than money. The reason is that the story was given to you by God to inspire people to transform their consciousness and wake people up. Therefore, these stories are a part of the very fabric of the universe-they are organic living beings. They are made up of spiritual energies that can awaken the sleepwalkers and resurrect the living dead. Money cannot do that as these fake Hollywood actors demonstrate. Money is not redemptive. But your God-inspired stories are redemptive. People are missing these profound truths. It's ironic that these same man made systems and concepts that boast so much progress end up distracting and enslaving people from the true reality. It's right in front of their faces like the tree of life in the garden of Eden and they don't see it because they are eating from the tree of falsehood, lies and deception..... Seit rund zehn Jahren ist sie auch als Produzentin in Hollywood aktiv für TV-Serien und Kinofilme, unter anderem mit Mel Gibson, Chistian Slater und dem „Desperate Housewives“-Star Eva Longoria (u.a. die Liebeskomödie „Without Men“). 2013 kürte sie das US-Magazin „Viva Glam“ zur „Sexiest Powerwoman of All Times“ – noch vor Trumps „First daughter“ Ivanka und Heidi Klum, die auch in den USA eigentlich zu den Super-Stars zählt durch ihre dortigen TV-Shows.

Für den TV-Kanal von Bild kommentierte Nadja Atwal als Mitglied des New Yorker Trump-Zirkels die Amtseinführung Trumps und ist nun Stamm-Kommentatorin („Analyst“) für die US-Senderfamilie Fox (u.a. Fox News und Fox Business) in den Bereichen Politik, Börsen, Finanzen und Unternehmen. Kritikern galt Fox News vor Jahren als Sprachrohr der außenpolitisch robusten, aber innenpolitisch linksliberalen „Neo-Cons“, welche auch bei den Demokraten prominent zu finden sind, und des vermeintlich rechten „Falken“-Flügels der republikanischen Administration des mexikanischstämmigen Präsident George „W“ Bush Jun., der aber heute zu den allerschärften Trump-Kritikern zählt und sein Interview dazu dem in den USA als „linksradikal“ geltenden Sender NBC gab. Allerdings weist das Rechts-Links („liberals“)-Gefüge in den Staaten mehr scheinbar widersprüchliche Bruchlinien auf als etwa in Europa, was sich wohl auch vor allem den diversen ethnischen bzw. religiösen Communities verdankt, die politisch nicht in Gänze den Rep vs. Dem-Lagern zuzuordnen sind. Dementsprechend wird Atwal auch vom Sender CNN (TimeWarner) als Talk-Gast eingeladen.

FOX NEWS ist der quotenstärkste Nachrichtenkanal in den USA und flagship channel des global führenden Medienkonzerns 21st Century Fox, der zum Firmenimperium des umtriebigen Rupert Murdoch (u.a. „The Sun“) gehört. Obwohl sowohl die Moderatoren als auch das Programm in seiner Gesamtheit nicht eindeutig politisch zu verorten sind und das Unterhaltungsprogramm von Fox legendäre Eigenproduktionen wie zum Beispiel „The Simpsons“ oder neuartige Hipster-Formate wie „New Girl“ verantwortete, gilt er „God’s & Guns“-Kritikern nun als „Haussender“ des Weißen Hauses unter Präsident Trump.

Haben Sie sich auch Michael Wolffs „Fire and Fury“-Enthüllungsbuch über das Weiße Haus gekauft?

Nadja Atwal: Nein. Erstens ist da die langjährige Reputation des Autors. Zweitens: Sogar nicht Trump-freundliche Leute sagen über im Buch beschriebene Ereignisse, dass sie entweder nicht so oder überhaupt nicht passiert sind. Tony Blair war einer von den ersten, der früh eine Episode mit ihm im Buch verblüfft als „Ist nie passiert“ dementierte. Warum soll ich dann meine Zeit mit so einem Müll verschwenden? Da hat dann jede Paulo-Coelho-Novelle mehr Wahrheitsgehalt – und ist lehrreicher.

Nach einem Jahr Trump: Sind Sie nun enttäuscht oder begeistert?

Nadja Atwal: Ist das eine rhetorische Frage? Was soll man sagen, wenn die Wirtschaft boomt, die Arbeitslosigkeit weiter sinkt, es den Schwarzen, die unter Obama extrem zu leiden hatten, wieder sehr viel besser geht in puncto Beschäftigung und Hauseigentum, illegale Einwanderung drastisch gesunken ist, der Aktienmarkt stetig Rekorde bricht, Firmen dank der Steuerreform und den Deregulierungen nicht nur Ihren Angestellten Bonusse zahlen, sondern die Mindestlöhne anheben, IS so stark dezimiert wird, dann die US-Nato-Partner erfolgreich dazu angehalten werden, ihren fairen Beitrag zu zahlen … ich könnte die Liste noch extrem verlängern, aber Sie können sich bereits jetzt vorstellen, wie ich entsprechend heute zu Trump stehe.

Aber was war denn mit Steve Bannon los? Der galt doch als Präsidentenmacher …

Nadja Atwal: Sehe ich als einen Mann, der seiner eigenen Relevanz zu viel Gewicht beigemessen hatte und dann negativ überrascht und verletzt reagierte, als die Party für ihn vorbei war. Nun ist er auch noch seinen Job bei Breitbart los. Kann sich nicht gut anfühlen – aber wäre ja vermeidbar gewesen.

Den meisten Europäern völlig unbekannt ist ja die fly over zone zwischen NYC und LA. In der Country Music war der Slogan „America First“ schon vor Trump lange verbreitet mit rein sozialpolitischem Impetus. Aber warum will Trump nun seine eigenen Wähler enttäuschen und kürzt Gelder bei den Ärmsten und bei Kranken und Behinderten?

Nadja Atwal: Sie meinen die, die während der Obama-Jahre ihren Job verloren haben, kein Eigenheim finanzieren konnten oder deren Krankenversicherungsbeiträge durch die Decke gingen? Oder die Kriegsveteranen, die für ihr Land ihr Leben riskierten und dann Monate auf Arzttermine warten mussten und für einige dann Selbstmord als beste Lösung erschien?

Schauen Sie sich zum Beispiel den klassischen Swing State – mal demokratisch, mal republikanisch – Florida an. Trump wurde von mehr Universitätsabsolventen gewählt als Hillary – so viel zum Thema, Trump-Wähler seien ungebildet. Aber er wurde auch und vor allem vom sogenannten „kleinen Mann“, der sich vergessen fühlte, gewählt. Dieser Wähler sieht jetzt im neuen florierenden Arbeitsmarkt und der Steuerreform seinen Anker der Hoffnung. Da schon vor Trumps Präsidentschaft nach und nach die Krankenkassen aus Obamacare ausstiegen, muss eine Reform her, da das existierende System sonst einfach kollabiert. Trump will das vermeiden und so müssen sich die beiden Parteien auf einen Konsens einigen.

Aber was haben die Dreamers denn falsch gemacht, dass die Trump-Wähler sie unbedingt raus haben wollen?

Nadja Atwal: Die Dreamers haben nichts falsch gemacht, sondern ihre Eltern, indem sie illegal in die US mit den Kindern eingewandert sind. Aber weder Trump noch die Republikaner wollen die Dreamer unbedingt raushaben. Der Aufenthalt dieser Kinder, die heute ja zum Teil weit über 30 sind, war auch von Obama nur in einem Übergangsabkommen festgehalten worden. Es war also immer klar, dass zeitnah an einer langfristigen Lösung gearbeitet werden müsste – und das in beiden Parteilagern.

Den Demokraten geht es ja bei allem, was Einwanderer angeht, nur noch um Wahlstimmen – weshalb man ja in Kalifornien auch lediglich mit Führerschein wählen konnte und der ist leicht so bekommen. Die Situation mit den Dreamers ist komplizierter, als man denkt, denn wenn man den 800.000 Dreamers, um die es momentan geht, z.B. Staatsbürgerschaft anbietet, hätten diese Bürger das Recht, sofort weitere Familienmitglieder in die US zu holen. Da sind wir dann schnell bei einigen Millionen Menschen angelangt … Alles nicht so einfach.

Viele Midwest-Bürger stellen sich ja Muslime als Gottseibeiuns vor. Dabei ist die Jugend in vielen muslimischen Ländern doch aber freiheitssüchtig und die klügste Islamkritik kommt oft von progressiven Muslimas selber!? Auch auf Trumps Jerusalem-Beschluss gab es keinen großen Reflex dort, in Beirut oder Jakarta verbringen die Teens und Twens ihre Zeit lieber in den Clubs als auf Demos …

Nadja Atwal: Klingt romantisch, aber die Westler per se sind eben auch ein Produkt anderer Tatsachen. Zum Beispiel wurde im liberalen England unter Moslems eine Umfrage zur Homosexualität gemacht: ca. 50% der Befragten sagten, Homosexualität sollte strafbar sein. Keine gute Bilanz. London ist die Stadt mit der höchsten Zahl von Säure-Attacken (pro Kopf). Und die Islamkritiker, die ich im US-TV sehe, reden darüber, wie Morddrohungen bei ihnen zum Tagesgeschehen gehören. Es gibt eben Dynamiken – in Richtung entspanntere und extremere Sichtweise. Das ist die Crux.

„Die einen dealen mit Theorie – die anderen mit Praxis“

Besonders befremdlich erscheinen vielen Europäern die immer noch laxen US-Waffengesetze.

Nadja Atwal: Sie sind gar nicht so lax, wie ich recherchiert habe. Das System der Anwendung muss extrem verbessert werden. Chicago, eine sehr demokratisch geführte Stadt, hat strengste Waffengesetze und das Resultat? Seit Jahren rekordartige Mord durch Schusswaffen. Gerade unter Schwarzen. Beim letzten Amoklauf eines Twens in der Kirche einer beschaulichen amerikanischen Kleinstadt, wo fast die Hälfte aller Kirchenbesucher an dem Tag starben, stellte sich heraus, dass der Täter keine Waffe hätte kaufen dürfen auf Grund seiner „Krankenakte“ in Bezug auf seinen mentalen Ausnahmezustand. Doch die eine Behörde hatte die Informationen nicht an die andere weitergeleitet; so verlief sein Backgroundcheck glatt und er konnte eine Waffe kaufen. Solche Fehler passieren wieder und wieder und müssen drastisch minimiert werden.

Wie stellen Sie sich denn Amerika in zehn Jahren vor?

Nadja Atwal: Ich stimme mit dem geopolitischem Analytiker George Friedman überein: Amerika ist wieder auf dem Pfad des Erfolges und gewinnt an Stärke. Und wenn man Trump Trump sein lässt und Substanz statt Stil höchstbewertet, dann sollte er auch die nächste Wahl gewinnen und weiterhin Amerika auf Gewinner-Kurs halten.

Viele Trump-Anhänger halten nicht viel von der „Eliten-Kultur“ in Kalifornien und New York, das schon über die Brücke von New Jersey aus gerne verächtlich als „the city“ bezeichnet wird. Was ist denn an den demokratischen Eliten an West und East Coast so schlimm?

Nadja Atwal: Es hat einen Grund, warum die meisten Professoren und Lehrer ultra-links sind und die meisten Bosse in der freien Wirtschaft rechts … Die einen dealen mit Theorie – die anderen mit Praxis. In Praxis funktioniert der ultra-linke Kurs nicht. Ich unterhielt mich mal mit einem ehemaligen Universitätsprofessoren, der sagte: „Ich war solange links, bis ich in die freie Wirtschaft ging und realisierte, dass ich auf dem ganz falschen Dampfer und in einem Vakuum war.“

Realist sein funktioniert besser als Idealist sein. Dazu kommt jetzt noch, dass die Toleranzgrenze bei den Demokraten für andere Meinungen fast gegen Null konvergiert und dazu extreme Gruppen wie die Antifa – in den US inzwischen als Terrorgruppe eingestuft – zu lange umarmt hat. Die demokratische Elite von heute hat sehr wenig gemeinsam mit den Demokraten der Bill-Clinton-Ära.

Sie selber waren ja früher eher links – warum heute nicht mehr? Was hat Sie denn an den Linken am meisten genervt?

Nadja Atwal: Ich erkannte nicht nur einen extremen Linksruck innerhalb der Demokraten in den USA wie auch innerhalb der CDU und SPD in Deutschland, sondern vor allem, dass Meinungsfreiheit von Linkeren aus nur noch akzeptiert wird, solange es das eigene Meinungsspektrum reflektiert. Das empfand ich als abartig. Und zurecht. Sogar eingefleischte US-Demokraten, die eher im Zentrum mit ihrer Gesinnung angesiedelt waren, sind geschockt von Pelosi und Schumer. Es geht nur noch um Wahlfang von illegalen Einwanderer bei den Demokraten – ohne Sinn und Verstand. Es ist fahrlässig, dumm, dreist und ehrlich gesagt zum Kotzen.

Eine „katastrophalen Flüchtlingspolitik“ in Deutschland

Andere halten das „Linke“ an diesen Parteien aber eher für Symbol- statt für wirkliche Sozialpolitik. Und was fanden Sie eigentlich an Deutschland so furchtbar, dass Sie emigrierten? Ist die Neue Welt aufgeschlossener?

Nadja Atwal: Ich verließ Deutschland mit Stolz auf Deutschland, aber mit Hunger auf mehr. Mit Anfang Zwanzig wusste ich, dass England bessere Pop-Musik als Deutschland macht und Amerika bessere Filme als der Rest der Welt. Mein Interesse galt der Hollywood-Business-Welt. Ich schrieb ein Drehbuch, das gleich zweimal optioniert wurde und von der damaligen Chefin von Paramount positives Feedback bekam. Das überraschte mich und spornte mich sehr an, und so studierte ich in Abendkursen an der Universität von Los Angeles Drehbuchschreiben, Filmfinanzierung und weitere Fächer … und voila: alles fruchtete.

Aber ich vermisste meine Eltern sehr und so wurde fast jeder verdiente Cent in ein Flugticket nach Hamburg umgewandelt. Mir liegt meine alte Heimat sehr am Herzen, weshalb es mich wie fast alle Amerikaner, die ich spreche, sehr schockiert, dass sich ein so erfolgreiches, schönes Land selbst zerstört mit so einer katastrophalen Flüchtlingspolitik, die weltweit einzigartig ist und für Kopfschütteln sorgt. In den USA war gerade in den News zu lesen, das vier deutschen Städte inzwischen Alarm schlagen und keine Flüchtlinge mehr aufnehmen aufgrund der starken Kriminalität, die damit verbunden ist.

Laut Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) gibt es aber keine gruppenspezifische Signifikanz in der allgemeinen Kriminalitätsentwicklung, allenfalls situations- und altersbezogene Problematiken … Nun denn, Schluss mit Deutschland: Was gefällt Ihnen eigentlich an NYC so gut?

Nadja Atwal: Ich war immer lauffaul. Außer in New York. Kein Block ist langweilig, da schiebe ich den Kinderwagen von Downtown 40 Blöcke rauf nach Midtown. Und wenn ich Taxi oder Uber fahre, übe ich mich in „Sind Sie aus so und so?“ Meine Treffer-Quote liegt inzwischen bei nahezu 100%. Die Stadt hat Dynamik, Menschen mit hoher Motivation und Sommer mit Sonne satt.

New York hat es durch Bürgermeister Giuliani mit seiner Law-and-Order-Methode bewiesen, dass ein Miteinander vieler von Menschen mit unterschiedlichsten Kulturen machbar und fantastisch ist. Die Schulklassen sehe aus wie eine UN-Mini-Konvention. Ich bin stolz auf New York.

Der Sender Fox hatte Sie engagiert – der gilt Kritikern als geradezu erzkonservativ. Sind Sie als selbstbewusste Frau da richtig oder leiden die Kritiker nur unter Missverständnissen?

Nadja Atwal: Da muss ich herzhaft lachen … erzkonservativ? Dann hätte ich dort nichts zu suchen … Shepherd Smith, einer der einflussreichsten, langjährigen Moderatoren bei FoxNews ist links und nicht schüchtern mit seiner Trumpkritik – und er ist kein Einzelfall. Bei Foxnews gibt es ein breites Feld von Meinungen.

Richtig ist, dass die meisten Moderatoren eher republikanische Ideen vertreten, aber jeder Sender im Newsbereich hat wie jede Zeitung seine politische Einfärbung. Deswegen ist man hier wie Deutschland gut beraten, nach Medienorganen mit unterschiedlicher politischer Gesinnung zu suchen und sie umfassend zu bilden. Wenn mich CNN anfragt und gleichzeitig FoxNews – den Fall gab es unlängst -, wähle ich allerdings lieber die Show, dessen Moderator ich für objektiver halte in Bezug auf Trump. Außerdem ist FoxNews zurecht der erfolgreichste Newskanal in den USA. Aber ich zappe und lese mich durch ein breites Spektrum von Meinungsmachern – denn pure objektive Berichterstattung gibt es weder in den USA noch in Deutschland. Alles ist entweder leicht nuanciert und sogar sanfte bis plumpe Meinungsmache. Traurige Tatsache.

Trump gilt als frauenfeindlich. Sie sind im Trump-Lager zu Hause. Sind das alles Reaktionäre?

Nadja Atwal: Warum haben ihn dann so viele Frauen gewählt? Und noch dazu Frauen mit Universitätsabschluss? Und mal ein paar Beispiele als Gegenpol zu dem Frauenhasser-Nonsense. Barbara Res, die erste Frau, die jemals(!) Skyscraper gebaut hat – unter Trump. Kellyanne Conway: erste Frau, die einen Präsidentschaftskandidaten erfolgreich zur Präsidentschaft führen durfte … oder konnte – unter Trump. Sarah Huckabee Sanders: erste Mutter als Pressesprecherin des Weißen Hauses – unter Trump. Hope Hicks: schon mit Mitte 20 PR-Chefin eines Präsidentschaftskandidaten ohne Erfahrung in der politischen Landschaft – unter Trump. Die Listen könnte ich noch extrem ergänzen.

Trump, der Frauenhasser ist genauso eine verfehlte These, wie dass er rassistisch sei – wobei der einflussreichste Vertreter der Schwarzen, Jesse Jackson, Trump ja mit Preisen und Lob für sein Engagement für die Schwarzen überhäuft hatte … bis Trump Republikaner wurde (lacht).

Aber nochmal zum Thema Frauen: Trump hat in seinem Unternehmen früh Frauen Spitzenpositionen gegeben. Sogar in der Männerdomäne Architektur und Konstruktion. Er hat in seinem Management der Trump-Firmen mehr Frauen als Männer im Management. Wenn er jemanden ablehnt oder sich zofft, kommentiert er die Person zuweilen krass – und er macht dabei einfach keinen Unterschied, ob Mann oder Frau. Richtig so!

Was halten Sie von Hollywood? Vieles erscheint dort bigott …

Nadja Atwal: Hollywood ist für mich eine noch desillusionierendere Erfahrung als Obama und die demokratische Partei. Links reden, rechts leben und permanent die Kerze von beiden Seiten anzünden.

Hollywood mimt das Sprachrohr des linkesten Flügels der demokratischen Partei … hetzt gegen Waffenbesitz, aber hat bewaffnete Bodyguards, pöbelt gegen die geplante Mauer zu Mexiko und verschanzt hier seine Villen nicht nur hinter Mauern, sondern sogar in speziellen, durch Wachposten abgegrenzte Wohnbezirken, sogenannte ��gated communities“. Dann faseln sie seit eh und je nach gleicher Bezahlung für gleiche Arbeit, wenn in keiner anderen mir bekannten Industrie Frauen so viel schlechter bezahlt werden als Männer und es nur grundsätzlich einige wenige gibt, die exorbitant verdienen und das große Mehr für die gleiche Arbeit peanuts nach Hause bringt.

Leute wie Woody Allen, Weinstein und Polanski wurden hofiert, bis … ja, bis es der Karriere mehr brachte, dies nun nicht mehr zu tun und stattdessen in das Gegenlager zu wechseln. Ich habe TV und Film mitproduziert in Hollywood und war froh, als ich nach New York zog.

Feminismus ist einfach unfeminin, verstärkt die Kluft zwischen Mann und Frau und macht Frauen einsam

Es gab MeToo-Tweets, wonach selbst Blicke als Angriff empfunden werden. Nach 40 Jahren Frauenbewegung hätte man Frauen für selbstbewusster gehalten. Gehört es nicht zu einem reflektierten Erwachsenen allgemein, mit souveräner Coolness auf dämliche Provokationen im Alltag zu reagieren, um diese „nedd amoi ignorier’n“ (Karl Valentin) wie einst Foxy Brown in den Filmen der 70er?

Nadja Atwal: Absolut. Es gab Momente, da war mir der Annäherungsversuch eines Mannes recht und andere, wo es mir nicht recht war und mir die Penetranz des Mannes auf den Zeiger ging. Aber letztendlich wäre es ja widernatürlich, wenn ein Mann nicht seinem leidenschaftlichem Gefühl für eine Frau nachgehen möchte. Und wir Frauen sind ja auch nicht immer leicht zu interpretieren und wirken auf Männer oft widersprüchlich. Wenn die MeTooler jetzt die Sensibilität nach oben schrauben, wie Sie in Ihrer Fragen gerade beschrieben haben, dann schaden Sie damit auch echten Opfern, die unter echter sexueller Belästigung und Schlimmerem zu leiden haben.

Was sagen Sie zu der MeToo-Kritik von Catherine Deneuve, die gemeinsam mit vielen anderen in „Le Monde“ einen radikalen Gegenaufruf veröffentlichte und eine „Diktatur der anti-erotischen Hysterie“ anprangerte?

Nadja Atwal: Ich stimme ihr bei allem zu – außer bei Roman Polanski. Als ich Einzelheiten des Verfahrens gegen ihn nachlas, war der Mann für mich passé. Entsprechend habe ich schon vor Jahren laut kritisiert, dass Hollywood dem Mann noch vor ein paar Jahren einen Oscar und Standing Ovations gab.

Wenn Frauen offenherzig über Sexualität reden, gilt das als fortschrittlich. Bei Männern als rückschrittlich. Ist das nicht diskriminierende Ungleichbehandlung?

Nadja Atwal: Können Fliegen fliegen? Natürlich ist das. Und das Gegenteil hochgradig idiotisch.

Aber was halten Sie denn insgesamt von Feminismus?

Nadja Atwal: Feminismus, wie er sich heute darstellt, ist einfach unfeminin, verstärkt die Kluft zwischen Mann und Frau und macht Frauen einsam. Mir fällt seit Jahren sowohl im US- als auch im deutschen Fernsehen auf, dass fast in jedem Werbespot mit Mann und Frau die Frau die smarte ist und der Mann der Trottel. Mal darauf achten. Die Frauen in den Werbespots wissen alles und der Mann ist das Dingding, dem sie alles zeigen und erklären muss. Im richtigen Leben jedoch ist der Mann heute smarter und selbsteffizienter denn je … kocht oft besser als die Frau, putzt, wäscht oder heuert sich entsprechend Hilfe …- und bleibt Single. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Emanzen!

Und wie bewerten Sie die Outfits von Feministinnen? Die Feministinnen in den 1920ern und 1960ern standen ja noch für Aufbruch mit Minirock und body-reclaiming …

Nadja Atwal: Tja, wer meint, dass man seine Glaubwürdigkeit und Stärke dadurch erhöht, indem Frau kein Make-up, kaum Absatz und eine lausige Frisur trägt….. Diese Frauen stellen zum Glück ja noch eine krasse Minderheit dar. Und so bleibe ich dann gerne bei meinen 8 cm-Stilettos, lackierten Nägeln und beim roten Lippenstift. (Marcel Malachowski)
