you know what, I actually will talk about this because it's bothering me. The issue with focussing so heavily on syd and carmy's potential for a romantic relationship isn't that there's something inherently unintellectual about romance or whatever, it's that a lot of people seem incapable of doing that without immediately flattening the story and ignoring or intentionally misreading any and all nuance for the sake of that romance. Every scene suddenly becomes about how it impacts their relationship, every analysis is done through a romantic lens, every frame or line of dialogue becomes about finding some easter egg or hint that "proves" these people should start dating. Their dynamic is absolutely a fundamental part of this show, but if you can only see it as a will-they-won't-they, you miss so much of what the story is actually trying to say with these two.

There are good versions of this story where their relationship is romantic and there are good versions of this story where it isn't, but as soon as you decide them being together is "the point," you lose the ability to actually judge the story for what it is, not what you want it to be.

#like so much of their dynamic (esp but not exclusively in S3) has been about showing the ways that carmy's trauma and dysfunctional #attitude in the kitchen impacts other people and how even though he cares about syd and wants their partnership to work he keeps self #sabotaging and setting himself and by extension her and the restaurant up to fail and replicating the same toxic environments that #he grew up and trained in and this is very much consistent with his character and a natural continuation of the conflicts they've been #having since S1 but because him being shitty with her runs contrary to them getting together suddenly its 'ruining the story' and #out of character and only happening bc the writers just hate to see this ship winning and like. if you really think that i genuinely don't #know what show you've been watching bc it sure as shit wasn't this one. like it hurts to see him do this because you know #they could do something genuinely great together and that he's ruining a really good thing but this is also the reality of where he is rn #if he was just a good and supporting business partner and not deeply dysfunctional it would be wildly out of character #the problem w S3 wasn't that it 'ruined' their relationship it's that it had no clear focus overemphasized carmy's arc at the expense #of the other leads deprioritized the supporting cast while failing to give them their own arcs gave more screen time to #unecessary and uninteresting new 'comic relief' characters and let conflicts stagnate without resolving them or #letting them evolve over the course of the season.#this isn't exclusive to the bear this is a general trend ive noticed where as soon as the 'shipper' part of people's brains get activated #it's like they lose the ability to read the story any other way and it stops being about what's good for the narrative and starts being #about whether or not these two people kiss and anything that gets in the way of that is bad and anything that brings it closer is good #and it's usually whatever but it's really frustrating when the story ppl are doing that to is this good #it also makes people fundamentally incapable of treating any 'obstacle' to that romance in a way that isn't wildly meanspirited and #gross (esp bc those characters are usually women) which is exhausting. like no claire isn't evil or a 'pick me' or 'bad' for carmy #or a useless addition to the story or whatever other nonsense you guys have decided must be true to feel okay. she's a perfectly normal #character and their relationship is exploring some of the ways that carmy's inability to deal with or actually address his trauma #impacts the various relationships in his life. she doesn't even have to be a monster or a narrative mistake for him and syd to be #'destined' for each other or whatever. this isn't a middle school wattpad fic.#im definitely gonna get killed in the street for this but ive been looking for a good reason to spend less time on here so might as well #the bear #sydcarmy #sydney adamu #carmy berzatto

btw one of the things i want to do when i really rap up atbb for real is spontaneously get the energy at will to do actual updated fullbodies of the main 4 since now i actually have the ability to draw them the way they look in my head & have the skills to put some more variety in their shapes. basically i wanna

#warning big character design rambling in these tags but like. were u expecting any less #if ur wondering what changed-#first of all everybody has bigger hands bc i'm actively deciding to commit to that decision because i like it :3 #next russ is a bit taller . i'll probably change some other things like making his armor look more solid & making him look more frail #-without it but i dont wanna pick up my tablet rn so thats all i feel like editing with my mouse lmao #edge has the biggest changes mostly in just being Wider. i want to make him Look stronger yknow #currently its just one of those annoying “skinny anime girl actually has 2d spraypainted abs and can lift a truck” tropes that i Hate #its a lil too many triangles when he should really be more like a triangle-flavored square. yknow #that being said the weirdly feminine hips were not intentional but only time will tell if they make it into the actual final design or not #i will not be making his pauldrons wider than they were originally. those things are already wacking everything around him they're fine #fluff's change is just being a bit skinnier so he looks more pathetic and sad. probably gonna try to make him look a bit younger too #but age is hard to represent with skeletons from The Land Of Sharp Features #i might also change up his pants/shoes more idk. #blabbering #rambling/whining/complaining/venting ahead:#I think the horrors have finally caught up to me and the depresso is starting to take hold #i don't usually experience this until winter but I think the sudden drop of activity and people going on hiatus and such -#has triggered this early for me #basically I can't be left alone with my thoughts for too long or i start spiraling REALLY badly.#i don't really handle change very well haha...#i have the notorious curse of second guessing anything and everything and putting it on repeat in my head and then amplifying it #which sucks bc I don't have any more escapisms that work now bc this was already my escapism and I have no human connections irl #(I'm not kidding either. I've failed time and time again to make friends irl and was always the proactive one about it. But alas... ugh)#my only source for connections is online bc i struggle to make friends (especially at my age and how my energy keeps depleting and depletin #might lowkey be sharkweek but usually I just get more agitated and not this (this is very specific to the winter horrors™ for me)#i guess I may as well check out the spears while they're around still (tho in between me making dinner). Anyway I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- Ben, Gwen, Argit, and Alan could’ve made for a good team.

#ben gwen and argit also works as i've said before #i don't think ben gwen and alan would've made as good a team #i don't think he would've played off them as well where we're introduced to him #he'd need to get his footing first and i think he would struggle with that working with them #meanwhile argit i think he could play off of well and especially since for this #we would most likely be working with a more rooters-arc-esque argit?#i think that sort've argit would be better for helping alan get his feet under him than the tennysons would be #no insult to them but they tend to be strong personalities and having so much more experience than alan?#and being morally grey-ish characters treated and being declared in universe to be porally upstanding?#i think he might get overwhelmed with them and find himself struggling to really build his confidence #especially since as i've said elsewhere he's one of the most moral characters we get #being able to work off somebody who's morally grey openly and actively? who also has no heroing experience? but still has morals and cares?#('even i know you never try to change a partner' 'don't give up on him we owe him that' damn near everythign from the rooters arc-)#i think he'd have an easier time there #also you can't tell me you don't want that scene where the sheriff decides alan is gonna work for him #only instead argit snatches him from him in open refusal to allow it despite hardly knowing the kid #in what the show would probably use to show how immoral he is but could be better used as an early show of the morals he does have #and how the cops lack these basic things even this guy who sold his own mother understands

#yea a lot of them r very nicely summarized in ‘he is trying to teach Apollo a lesson’ and ‘if the whole world thinks he forged evidence #then why not ACTUALLY do it. the fuck is it gonna cost him?’#but like. mmmgh. mmmrmph!!!#grabbing him and shaking him by the shoulders so hard #bc Miles was under the SAME scrutiny and yea he never got disbarred over it but there were rumors and then active accusations and the very #real and serious threat OF being disbarred. it never came to pass but it WAS there #and like. it was phoenix’s arguable naïveté and his ‘blind’ faith in Miles which halted that shit in its tracks #if Phoenix had this same sort of ‘being naive will cost you everything’ attitude. almost pessimistic. at that time? things would’ve been #FUCKED. and like ‘but Phoenix always believes in Miles!!!’ Because He Trusts People Wholeheartedly At That Current Stage of His Life #and like two sides same coin or whatever but how much of him not DIRECTLY (visibly) going to Miles for help is like #class trial. everyone thinks he stole the money so he might as well have. and he goes to apologize. except Miles declares that it’s not #fair. there’s no proof so Phoenix shouldn’t have to apologize if he didn’t do it #but now. he did it. maybe not in THAT trial. but he gave forged evidence to Apollo. this time there’s proof. this time he did it.#for real. no takebacks. and this is the Prosecutor Edgeworth in endless pursuit of the dirty bitter truth. and it has to be a pretty heavy #weight to think of what this truth would mean to Miles in particular. considering their history (in Phoenix’s mind anyways)#I think miles would understand. not agree with it but understand. a forgivable transgression (just not forgivable to the part of Phoenix #that is still himself. that isn’t playing a game of deception and recognizes that his own genuine faith saved multiple lives.)#ARGH. okay one thing i do appreciate about the show so far is that they are competing as groups. if i read the rules right the prize at the end is a concert for the top 6(?) groups, and it's not a situation where they'll be split up to form a temporary boy group at the end. (cmiiw bc i very well could have read the explanation wrong). already i think that makes it less stressful than the unit

#thats the thing thats always kind of bothered me about the unit + idols of active groups going on pd101 etc #is that they do get split up #and like if an individual does make the final lineup does it really help the og group as a whole?#it might bring some more attention to them but the main interest is the member in the temp group #who wont even be with the og group while the temp group is active #the only example of this actually possibly benefiting the og group i can think of is nuest #maybe there are other examples #but it always just seemed like a longshot and not really benefitial to the group as a whole most of the time #like it was so stressful as a tk watching the unit bc on one hand i wanted the members to do well and end up in the group #but also i knew if one of them did if probably wouldnt be a good thing for td promotions #not that we really got any td promotions after that anyway it was only 1 jp single #but i remember when i watched kingdom i thought that i wish the setup for the unit was more like that #and peak time is exactly the kind of thing i wanted #its a shame xt/td is gone and bjoo is just part of the mixed group(? idk how thats gonna work yet im sure ill find out)#but i really hope the other groups on this show get more recognition through the show #im sure not all of them will esp those that get eliminated right away #but i hope some good comes out of it #im gonna continue ep 2 tomorrow #im not actually planning on liveblogging the whole thing i just happened to have Thoughts™#melia.txt
