Review : Zombieland - Double Tap (2019)

Well, it’s finally time... after 10 long years, Zombieland : Double Tap has touched down.  I’ve not seen much in terms of promo, but in all honesty, I tend to prefer my viewings that way.  With all of my excitement surrounding the film, I can only hope the viewing stands up to my expectations. 

Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abagail Breslin) are still roaming the roads of Zombieland... that is, until they decide to take residence in the White House.  As Tallahassee drives Little Rock crazy in the role of a surrogate father, Columbus and Wichita are still attempting to navigate their rocky relationship.  In hopes of crystalizing their connection, Columbus proposes to Wichita, leading to Wichita and Little Rock disappearing with Tallahassee’s prized vehicle, The Beast.  After about a month of moping, Columbus and Tallahassee head to a mall, where they meet Madison (Zoey Deutch), a ‘stereotypical’ blonde who has survived Zombieland by hiding in the mall freezer.  Madison convinces Columbus to have sex with her, which makes Wichita’s’s return to the White House extremely awkward.  Things get even tougher when Wichita reveals that Little Rock has disappeared with Berkley (Avan Jogia), a young pacifist with his eye on the peaceful community known as Babylon.  With Madison in tow, the family hits the road in hopes of finding Wichita and making their family whole again.

Everything that I love about the original Zombieland is amplified and doubled down on, much like a sequel should be.  The humor is sharper, with tons of references towards the original film, the fact we are watching a film, the strained relationships we’ve come to love, and an ungodly amount of pop culture and historical references all used as fodder.  The unsung stars of the series, the Zombies, are given a complete overhaul in the form of an evolution arc, with standard performances being replaced by at least four distinct types of Zombies that range from braindead (no pun intended) to nearly unstoppable.  The cast is expanded to include an array of characters that are equally entertaining as the core four that we’ve come to know and love.  Zombie Kill of the Week has evolved into Zombie Kill of the Year.  Even the nearly perfect title sequence presented in Zombieland gets a callback in the form of another Metallica song scoring more slow-motion Zombie kills.

Similar to the narrative and character aspects, the world of Zombieland seems much bigger in Zombieland : Double Tap.  The White House, Graceland and a handful of other notable locations make appearances in the film, with The White House serving as the basis for tons and tons of historical references and jokes, many of which are seeds that pay off later in the film.  While I’m personally not a fan of Elvis Presley, it is nice to see the characters indulge in their love and respect of ‘The King', with Jesse Eisenberg even getting to don a pair of blue suede shoes for a large portion of the film.  Wherever the Babylon location is, it is a wonderful location for the final third of the film, with its tower in the center serving as a visually stunning centerpiece, and a dynamite location for a climax to Zombieland : Double Tap.  

The locations and set design are strong throughout the film, as mentioned previously, especially the time spent in The White House.  Everything that was wonderful about the integration of rules visually into Zombieland is enhanced in Zombieland : Double Tap, including better aging and motion graphics, and even different styles of text for Flagstaff’s ‘commandments’ and Tallahassee’s brief attempt at his own rules.  The layered levels of awareness are also interesting... there seems to be the world of film lore, with focus on Zombies and the legend of ‘Murraying’ someone, but the narration often reflects directly on the fact that we’re watching a film.  Even the Zombie Kill of the Year expansion echoes back to the original idea of Zombieland being a TV franchise.  Wichita utters possibly my favorite film line of 2019 : ‘If you love something, you shoot it in the face’.

Jesse Eisenberg does what he does best, but a bit of his neurotic nature has been replaced with edgier, sharper wit, which is a subtle indicator of his growth during time spent with his Zombieland family.  Woody Harrelson remains wild, but his connection with the Little Rock and Nevada characters ground him a bit more than he was in the first film.  Emma Stone plays her conflicted nature quite well, showing that she’s gotten comfortable, but ultimately has not yet changed in the way that Columbus and Tallahassee have.  Abigail Breslin gives her character the most drastic change, which is appropriate due to her age and the natural inclination to flee the nest.  Zoey Deutch embraces the ‘dumb blonde’ aesthetic while avoiding making it a complete trope, providing some truly hilarious moments due to her being so different from the characters we’ve gotten used to.  Avan Jogia swings far in the other direction, managing to bring a bit of innocent sleaziness to the mix.  Rosario Dawson matches Harrelson’s energy quite well, which is a nice change of pace as she normally is stuck with roles that lean heavily on her kinder nature.  Appearances by Luke Wilson, Thomas Middleton, Al Roker, Grace Randolph, Lili Estefan, and of course, Bill Murray, round out the wonderful affair.

I knew that Zombieland : Double Tap would be good, but in all honesty, I had no idea I’d enjoy it as much as I did.  While not the best movie I’ve seen in 2019, it is almost certain to appear in my top 5 films of the year, if not the top 3.

Cocaine Bear was fun. I still haven't seen The Snowman, I heard it wasn't that good though.

The Snowman is awful! And I even saw that when I still cared about Fassbender. It was part of that trendy moment of Scandinavian detective/mystery movies.

Still need to see Cocaine Bear.
