p.s.: i took some artistic liberties, mainly handcanon-ing that gideon has a ton of freckles because she is a ginger also, i know the face paint is suppose to be black and white but i don't really enjoy working with greys so i went with that kind of hybrid purple/grape/desaturated magenta/wine grey colour instead which felt like a good alternative, sorry if it is sacrilegious to some

How do you cook a pancake? When I do it, it tends to fall apart when I try to flip it, and it's yellow with black spots instead of that nice brown you see in pictures.

If there's black, your heat is up too high. You're burning it.

(Either that, or some of your nonstick coating is flaking off the pan and you need to throw away the pan. Check that. Don't eat those, it's super bad for you.)

The even color is from having a thin layer of butter or oil. Like, drop a little oil in, coat the pan, and then use a paper towel to remove the excess blops. Spotting with brown is usually from excess oil in the pan.

You want JUST ENOUGH oil to make the cake unstick itself once cooked, and you want the oil to be just as hot as the pan before the batter goes in.

Pancakes require some patience. It's panCAKES. You're kinda baking them. You want the surface temp of your pan to be about 350-360 degrees. You can get a lil kitchen thermometer (they're cheap, don't worry) to be perfect.

I usually make sure my pan is on MEDIUM, not High.

Pour the batter in.

Let it cook UNTOUCHED until the whole surface of the raw batter is showing bubbles forming, and the edge around the circumference of the pancake is drying out a bit from cooking.

Then flip.

Let it sit UNTOUCHED for a good 2 minutes, until you see the edges around the circumference look totally dry.

Then you can check the color. You can always leave it in the pan to brown a bit more.

Summary:

Vi desperately wishes she could put into words what she’s been enduring. She’s frustrated with herself, angry at the way she stays silent instead of speaking what’s on her mind. Her thoughts eat at her from the inside, pushing for a way out, fighting to be exposed. Clenching her jaw, Vi fills with envy over how Cait seems to be able to just…talk. To take emotions and release them from her lips with ease. Vi’s press up against the back of her teeth, threatening to explode.
