Prompt 12 - Wand
@wolfstarmicrofic September 12, word count 311
Previous part First Wolfstar part
Regulus read A Christmas Carol that night after James had requested Flitsy to bring it. Sirius had hid with Remus in their tent when the grumpy elf had arrived.
“So what did you think?” Sirius asked Regulus the following morning.
“It was good. I understand your plan now. I am not wearing chains though,” He warned, narrowing his eyes. Sirius snorted.
“No, Reggie, you don’t have to wear chains,” He wrapped an arm around his brother’s shoulders, tugging him in close as he continued to tease him.
“We’ll need to wait for Crouch Sr. to leave for the day and hope that Barty stays at home. I’m certain that Crouch Sr. has no idea where his son’s allegiance lies.” Remus said to them as they tucked into bowls of thick porridge, courtesy of Rorbey. The elf had brought a huge cauldron of it with him when he popped into the camp with a message from Orion, telling him that Walburga had been called back to London for an important meeting and would be gone all week if Sirius needed anything. It would be safe for him to visit. He’d told Remus, who’d just hugged him and told him it would be safer for them all if Sirius only went to the Summer Manor if he really had to. Sirius had agreed. He’d tell Rorbey if he came back again before the week was out.
“Well, no time like the present I suppose,” He said, standing up and stretching. “Let’s go find this cup.”
They stood outside the very modest-looking Crouch family home. While the Crouchs were part of the Sacred Twenty-eight, they, like so many of the old families, had squandered their riches and had yet to refill their vaults with gold. Sirius doubted that they ever would.
Sirius raised his wand and, with the others, they silently approached the house.

I would legit read those. Someone please write a fic about Regulus writing Tom Riddle X Reader fanfics, where it's quite obvious that "Reader" is Reggie 😂
One feature of his fanfics will be Tom and Reader (Reggie) in a forced marriage, who slowly fall in love (and lust) and live happily ever after with their cantankerous old house-elf as a grumpy yet lovable sidekick.
Obviously it all goes to hell later. When Voldemort almost kills Kreacher, Regulus destroys all his fanfics and sacrifices himself for revenge.
The "hilarious crackfic turned into an angsty pit of despair" that I desperately need. It's gonna be called "The end of innocence", a title that will make you laugh at first and cry later 🙃
Regulus would have loved reading Tom Riddle x reader fanfic-
He actually writes it himself
It’s very anatomically incorrect because his parents never gave him sex ed(in their opinion all he needs to know is how to sire an heir) and his classmates do not make the habit of discussing the sticky details of gay sex in their free time
Common plots in these fanfictions of his include: his parents selling him to the dark lord, him somehow procuring an invisibility cloak and getting fucked by the dark lord in front of his unknowing brother, him having to get married to the dark lord because he got him pregnant, and the dark lord kidnapping him and making him his sextoy. He also usually describes the dark lords eyes as “glowing red orbs.” You get the picture.

Princess Part 10
Harry Potter Marauders Era AU
Link to Part 9
Pairings: Regulus Black x Reader
Rating: M
_____
“Considering we have been preparing for you to die...I think we deserve five minutes of explanation. You have scared Y/n and your mother to death. I suggest you start talking…”
Regulus frowned at his father’s comment. Orion was right. You did deserve the truth. Regulus knew later he would feel guilty for not caring about his mother knowing the truth or Orion for that matter. His only worry was you. You sat at his side gently stroking his now healed hand.
“Fine, shut the door.”
Regulus replied as James reached out and shut the door with his foot. As much as Regulus didn’t want anything to do with James nor Sirius, they did save his life. Maybe it was time to put some bitter feelings on the back burner for the moment.
“Voldemort is worse than we all feared. He’s insane and we need to stop sympathizing with him. James and Sirius just keep doing whatever it is that you do. That part was directed toward you but...mum and dad...we were so wrong. This guy almost killed Kreacher....yes, that pissed me off but it wasn’t the reason that I…did what I did. Voldemort is out there creating horcruxes...I found one...a locket. I just need to figure out how to destroy it.”
Sirius’ mouth dropped.
“So that explains what you were muttering about. How do we destroy it?”
Regulus shrugged.
“Beats the hell out of me. Kreacher has it right now.”
Sirius frowned.
“You left something that important to Kreacher? The same Kreacher that we grew up with?”
You winced when Regulus’ hand tightened around yours.
“Well, it was either that or it went to the bottom of the lake with me while I was busy being drowned by Inferi. Which would you have preferred?”
Regulus ignored how both Walburga and Orion went completely pale at the mention of “being drowned.” Sirius, meanwhile, was still trying to take in what he was hearing.
“So inferi tried to turn you into a human pretzel?
Regulus was beginning to get annoyed with Sirius. He didn’t like being interrupted as it was now here was Sirius asking questions that would have been answered anyway.
“Yes, Sirius...please keep up. Like I was about to say, Voldemort won’t just leave the prized pieces of his soul just lying around. He will make whoever it is work for what they are getting. Between having to slice my hand open to get into this place, drinking some god fucking awful potion, and almost getting drowned...I had to give the locket to Kreacher. He is probably at home having a panic attack because the last thing that he saw was me going under. Mum, can you send a telegram home and let him know that everything is alright?”
Walburga was fanning herself. None of this was anything that she expected to hear. She had expected to hear some story of Regulus going up against another death eater. Now knowing how close she actually was to losing her baby, everything was beginning to feel fuzzy.
“I don’t think mum is available right now.”
Sirius commented. Orion nodded and gently patted his wife’s shoulder. He wasn't sure what really to do to comfort her when he was trying to control his own pounding heart. Between questioning, if what Regulus was saying was true and the realization that he almost died...Orion didn’t know how to feel.
I knew that I should have never supported letting him get into that.
Orion thought before finally speaking.
“Son, Kreacher is just fine. I told him where we were going before we left.”
Regulus nodded before turning his attention back to you. Your hand was over your mouth as the tears were streaming down your face.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry. That’s why I was so short-tempered before we broke up...I was…”
You shook your head. None of this was anything that you wanted to hear. Deep down you knew that there was a reason Regulus had been so grumpy. Regulus losing his temper when you begged Sirius for help all made sense now.
“You’re fine now...that’s what matters.”
Regulus laughed.
“I don’t know about fine. When Voldemort finds out that I figured out his secret, he isn’t going to be thrilled.”
“Sounds like you need to go into hiding a bit.”
James commented. Regulus hated the thought of being trapped in a house but, for once, Potter was probably right on this one. He definitely needed to lay low once Voldemort came back from trying to gather new recruits in Bulgaria.
“Yeah, maybe.”
Regulus commented as Walburga jumped up.
“There is no maybe to it, Regulus! You will go into hiding whether you want to or not.”
Regulus didn’t feel like arguing with his mother at the moment and only nodded. In fact, the only thing that he really wanted to do was to go back to sleep and sleep for a long time. He had to shake the urge to go back to sleep before turning his attention back to you.
When Orion stood and commented that the two of you needed some privacy, you could have been more thankful. The two of you had a lot to talk about and the last thing that either of you wanted was to have this conversation with an audience.
Regulus waited until everyone was out of the room before relaxing back into the pillow. He finally felt like he could relax.
“Do you hurt badly?”
You asked before reaching out and stroking your fingers through his hair. Regulus didn’t open his eyes but was clearly pleased by the physical contact.
“A little. I didn’t want you finding out what happened like that.”
You sat down on the side of the bed and took his hand in yours. It didn’t matter how you found out, you would have been devastated. Knowing how close you were to losing Regulus made everything within you ache. Seeing him banged up was bad enough but knowing that you almost lost him forever...you couldn’t put that thought into words.
“It would be horrible no matter how I found out.”
Regulus’ eyes fluttered open.
“I’m sorry about the past few months. I never meant for any of it to go the way it did. I was a jerk to you and you didn’t deserve it! You were trying to keep me safe...I’m not mad at you for going to Sirius. I guess part of me was jealous.”
“Darling, you don’t have to worry about my feelings toward Sirius. He’s obsessed with Remus and I can’t nor do I have the desire to compete with that.”
Regulus smirked for a moment, however, his face went back to the “sad lost boy” expression that always made your heartache. His face looked as it did the night that Sirius left.
“I always knew that there was something going on there. Anyway, I don’t want to talk about them. I want to talk about us. I love you, Y/n and I want to be with you because you're good for me. The past few months without you...I don’t want to go back to that place. If you want your ring back...I’ll never take it off of your hand again.”
Regulus wrapped his hand around yours and brought it to his mouth. He closed his eyes and inhaled your scent. Regulus wasn’t about to tell you the childish mess that he had been without you. Maybe you should know that he either drank himself to sleep or cried like a baby every night to mourn your loss. Regulus had refused to get out of bed for a few days and had taken to laying with his face shoved into your pillow just to smell your lavender shampoo.
“I love you too, Regulus. You’re right. I was just trying to keep you safe. I didn’t want to see you harmed. Now knowing that you almost died and seeing what you have gone through, I regret ever saying that I was okay with you being a death eater. I’m proud of you for what you have done though. You were so brave, love.”
“It was more desperation than bravery. I also got pissy because that twat hurt my elf.”
You smiled.
“You should rest, darling.”
Regulus didn’t move to let you go.
“Lay with me. I’ll sleep better feeling you against me.”
Regulus scowled at you when you didn’t move fast enough. You, meanwhile, looked down at him with apprehension.
“You won’t hurt me. Just lay on my right side and put your head on my chest. Please.”
You couldn’t say no to those eyes. As gently as possible, you eased yourself against Regulus’ body. Regulus yawned and snuggled his face against your hair.
“See. I’m not hurting now, Princess.”
You smiled against his chest as Regulus slowly began to doze back off leaving you awake.
Everything will be okay this time…
It took another week before the healers would consider letting Regulus go home. You were relieved when the healer finally said that he could go home. Regulus has been getting frustrated with not being able to leave even though he felt fine (so what if he was still walking with a limp). He wanted out of the hospital to heal at home.
Regulus had talked you into agreeing to move back into him. You knew that James wasn’t thrilled with the idea. He had tried to persuade you to “take things slow” with Regulus.
“Y/n, please. You really should take this slow. I don’t want you to get hurt again.”
“I know, James. Regulus needs me though. I want to take care of him.”
Regulus, meanwhile, was thrilled upon hearing that you didn’t do what James wanted but what he wanted instead. It just proved to Regulus that you were loyal to him and that was what he wanted.
The following two weeks were a little more difficult than you expected. Regulus wasn’t thrilled that you didn’t want to give up your job working for Barty Crouch Sr. The day that you were scheduled to return to work, Regulus sat on the bed watching you with a scowl.
“Why do you want to work for that crazy old man? We have plenty enough money for you not to work.”
“Because I actually enjoy my job.”
Regulus crossed his arms over his chest with an impatient frown.
“I don’t like him. He locked up his own son.”
You sighed as you finished putting on your lipstick.
“He kind of had to, love.”
“He’s a creep.”
Regulus muttered before standing and limping toward the door. You quickly walked after him as Regulus sat down on the couch to start reading a book.
“Reggie, please. This job has really taught me a lot. I’m not some spoiled selfish princess who only cared about herself anymore.”
Regulus looked up. He felt guilty about his less than stellar actions. While Regulus was trying to “see things differently” now old habits die hard deaths. He was thankful that you had been beyond patient with him as he would fuss about the order then turn around and say that they were doing the right thing.
“You have never been selfish. Love, you are the least selfish person on this stupid planet. I just worry...I’m also getting frustrated with sitting here day after day. It may be a good thing that you are there. It gets more information that my brother can use. I don’t want anything happening to him.”
You gave Regulus a pleased smile.
“I know, darling. Maybe you should spend some time with Sirius. He would love to see you. I also need to have coffee with Remus. Since I won’t be getting a sister-in-law, Remus gets to do all of that ceremonial activities.”
Regulus smirked.
“I’m sure Remus is looking forward to listening to stories of our sex life.”
You pulled on your coat before moving to kiss Regulus goodbye.
“I return the favor so he doesn’t mind.”
It took all that you had not to laugh at the grossed-out expression on Regulus’ face.
“Gross. I don’t want to think about my brother getting laid. Have a good day. Maybe when you get home, we can work on some new stories to tell Remus.”
Regulus had been ready to rip your clothes off the day that he had come home but you told him no. It didn’t matter how many times that you told him no “for his health” Regulus tried to guilt-trip you into it.
“We’ll see how it goes.”
You had been gone for half an hour when there was a knock at the door. Regulus tossed his book to the couch before getting up and going to answer the door. Emma Rosier stood on the other side with a smile on her face. Regulus hadn’t seen Emma since Evan’s funeral. Other than writing her a few times to make sure that she was okay, Regulus had no urge to speak to her. Sending her a few “hey, are you still alive” letters was more out of due to respect for Evan than anything else.
“Emma.”
Emma smiled.
“Hey, I heard you were out of the hospital. What happened to you?”
Regulus didn’t answer immediately. The last thing that he was about to tell her was the truth.
“Stupid accident where I came off looking bad. You can come in, I have something of Evan’s for you anyway.”
Emma smiled and slid past Regulus. She turned as he closed the door and limped back to the couch.
“I haven’t seen you this banged up since that quidditch game in 5th year. Too bad, Y/n isn’t here to baby you...or is she? I heard that Y/n has moved back in and you two are fixing your little relationship.”
Regulus’ eyes carefully rolled up to meet Emma’s face. He had a feeling as to where this conversation was going to go.
“Mhm.”
Emma’s soured a bit.
“I don’t know how you trust her. She turned her back on you to aid your brother and his lot. Now she’s working for the man who put our friend...his own son in prison.”
Regulus felt the annoyance beginning to build in his stomach. He didn’t care for Emma in the first place and was only nice to her for Evan. Now he didn’t have to fool with her anymore or be nice to her for that matter.
There was also the fact that Emma would be so cold toward you. For someone who claimed to “be your best friend” she sure wasn’t acting like it.
“That’s the thing about people in our stories Emma. They are in prison or dead. Y/n was trying to protect me. I trust her.”
Emma crossed her arms over her chest before easing her shirt down a little lower to show more of her cleavage. She was pleased when Regulus narrowed his eyes at her. He didn’t look thrilled but his eyes were on her and that was what she wanted.
“You shouldn’t. Real soul mates don’t do their lovers the way that she has done you. Say goodbye to her Reggie and be the smart man that you are. Find a woman who will support you...someone like me who knows the pureblood ways.”

Chapter 2: Sirius Black, aged 7
Sirius Black was sitting in the parlour on a ridiculously expensive chair, feet swinging as he grumbled about his mother cutting his hair. He, apparently, wasn’t respectable-looking enough for the Most Noble and Ancient House of Black, which was silly, in his opinion, because Sirius Orion Black was a seven-year-old. Which, of course, meant he was incredibly grown up, but not old and grumpy enough to have to look a certain way for family dinners.
Family dinners! He’d get to see Cousin Andy, who was brilliant. Last time, she brought dungbombs and they let them off at the dinner table, which had been hilarious. His mother had dropped out of her perfect posture and shrieked like a banshee, beautiful hair slipping off her head in cascades, stumbling in her heels and ripping the hem of her gown. It had been hilarious, and, though he had been caught, it had been a riot of an evening he’d never forgot (no, not just because he’d had champagne for the first time! Besides, that was Bellatrix’s fault).
“Alright, Sirius, I think you look gentlemanly now.” Walburga smiled, kissing him on the forehead. “No antics like last year and you’ll be fine. At least with Andromeda, Cygnus can marry her off. You’re our heir apparent.”
“Yes mother,” Sirius groaned, slipping off the chair, looking for an escape from his overbearing mum.
She ruffled his hair, smiling. “Love you, Sirius.”
“Love you too, mum.”
He ran upstairs to get ready, already hearing the guests come in.
“Walburga! Stunning as always, I see,” was his Auntie Druella.
“Druella, my friend!” which was probably followed up with a hug, kissing on the cheeks and smiling between the two women whom he’d once seen comparing makeup techniques, because the House of Black could never be anything but perfect.
Toujours Pur indeed.
“Reggie! Reggie, come on!” he yelled, dragging his younger brother, Regulus, down the stairs.
Oh, ewwwww.
His father, Orion Black, and his Auntie Druella were deeply in love but married to someone else. Which meant hidden romantic scenes and snogging when nobody was looking, but it was gross.
“Ori,” she whispered, staring deep into his eyes, their hands clutched tightly together.
“Dru,” his father responded, their noses mere inches apart.
“I love you,” Auntie Druella murmured, not giving him time to respond before clutching his face and kissing him like a starving woman, white gloves rumpling on his jawline, lipstick smearing onto his face.
“Ew, ewwww, Reggie don’t look!” Sirius hissed, covering his brother’s eyes, turning away from the sight of his father snogging his aunt.
“I love you too,” he heard his father say, breathlessly, after the kiss.
Regulus shoved Sirius’ hands off his eyes and dragged him downstairs, straight past their father and their aunt, who didn’t even notice them come through.
“My sons! Where were you?” cried Walburga, impeccably dressed as always.
“I’m sure they just got a little… caught up in something,” their Great-Aunt Cassiopeia interrupted, showing her teeth. She knew about the affair between Orion and Druella, but of course she didn’t tell anyone, because she was Cassiopeia Black and she loved chaos.
Grandfather Pollux and Grandmother Irma lurked in the back corner, and Sirius instinctively moved away from them, as both of them were creepy and despised children. Lightly tugging Reggie’s hand, Sirius began to reverse away from their leering grandparents, only to crash backwards into an elderly couple.
“Grandpa Arcturus! Grandma Mel!” Reggie cried, getting smothered in hugs and forehead kisses from Melania.
“How’s my little man these days, huh?” For all she seemed nice, the Black family could team up and be deadly, especially the woman.
“Sirius! Heir apparent! I guess you’re ready for when I finally die so your father can take over, huh?” Arcturus said, shaking Sirius’ hand firmly, his seven-year-old self almost bouncing up and down at the force.
“I- uh… oh look, Reg, there’s Uncle Alphard!” he stuttered, pulling his brother away from their grandma, Arcturus frowning with displeasure as they ran away.
“Sirius!” their Uncle Alphard cried, seeing them come in his direction. “How’s my favourite nephew, then, huh?”
Sirius found his hand sliding out of Reggie’s, and suddenly he was up in the air, too high, way too high, and everything was spinning.
“Uncle- I- urgh,” Sirius spluttered, unable to voice his discomfort. “My brother’s here too!”
He found himself on the ground again, sinking to the floor dizzily.
“Little Regulus! I didn’t see you there!” Alphard said, pinching his cheeks and ruffling his hair. “How’s my lil’ kiddo?”
“Why is everyone calling me little? I am a big boy now! I’m six!” Regulus pouted, looking adorable with big brown eyes and ruffled hair.
“Of course, but you will always be my little kiddo!” Their uncle boomed, sweeping the pair of them into a hug, of which they barely came past his knee. He crouched so he could be at their level, his slightly greasy shoulder length hair swinging in front of their faces. Regulus wrinkled his nose and batted it like a small kitten, to which Alphard let out a hearty laugh and opened his battered leather satchel. “Don’t tell anyone, but I got you each a little gift from my travels,” he whispered, handing Regulus a little ship in a bottle, and Sirius a set of expensive-looking bangles.
“Brother!” Walburga sniffed, elegantly looking down her nose at him, black lace gown sweeping the floor as she marched up beside him. “I haven’t seen you in ages. Come and catch up with us.”
Alphard stood up, dusting off his battered suit, and nodded. On his way to join the women, he winked and Sirius, and murmured, “Give ‘em hell for me, kid.”
With Uncle Alfie gone, the Black brothers looked for another distraction. Without a distraction in sight, however, the middle daughter of Cygnus and Druella Black was stalking through the room, pale skin almost glowing, thick, sleek, black hair swirling loose down her back, a rare luxury for a ten-year-old in the Black family, dark eyes searching the room for prey.
“My favourite cousins! What fun!” Bellatrix yelled, flitting through the room towards them.
“Trix!” Sirius giggled, knowing she hated that nickname.
Bellatrix frowned, and then smiled that nasty smile that ten-year-olds with a cruel streak do, and it was not a nice smile. It was the kind of smile that made Sirius hug his younger brother instinctively, and step in front of him, creating a kind of human shield.
“Kreacher!” she snapped, calling the wrinkled old house elf to her side. “Get us something… fun… to play with.”
Kreacher’s yellowing teeth flashed as he obeyed. “Kreacher bes doing what Young Mistress Black’s wanting.”
She giggled, patting Sirius’ shoulder with a cold hand, to which he recoiled. “It isn’t always I get to play with my little cousins, is it now, Reggie?”
Her eyes flickered to the younger of the two, who was partially hidden behind Sirius, and she had a mask of malice disguising her pretty features. Kreacher popped back in, offering her a dark orb, white streaks of lightning crashing within, and she pulled on her black gloves, straightening the hem by the crook of her elbow, and held the orb out to Sirius.
“Little cousin! Would you like to have a taste of our family’s little treasures?” she hissed, eyes wild and nearly glowing with the power she had over them.
Sirius pulled Reggie back, he had no idea what it was, but it felt ugly, and it radiated an aura of coldness.
“Now, now, don’t be like that! It’s all in good fun! Here, little Reg, you try it!” Bellatrix grabbed him by the arm and pulled him into a tight, one-armed embrace.
“Reggie, no! It feels icky, don’t touch it!” fear clogged his throat as he watched his little brother encircled in the arms of his crazy cousin.
“Come now, just a little brush, that’s all it takes,” Bellatrix coaxed Regulus.
“B-but it feels kinda gross,” Reggie stammered, his hand half out, eyes wide and panicked. “Siri?”
“Reggie, don’t listen to her, don’t touch it! It’s evil!” Sirius cried, watching him but unable to help.
“Don’t be silly, Cousin Sirius, how can an object be evil?” Bellatrix murmured, gloved hand caressing the orb.
“Now, now, Bella,” a soft voice crooned. “Stop toying with our baby cousins, it’s very rude.” Narcissa Black straightened up, dress smooth without a single wrinkle.
“I-I’m not a baby!” Reg complained, defiantly.
“Yes, of course not. Bella, let us go somewhere else.”
“But Cissy…” Bellatrix whined.
“Bella,” Narcissa warned, hands clenching together in a very ladylike manner.
With a dramatic sigh and a grand flourish, Bellatrix relinquished her hold on Regulus, pouting as she swept after her younger sister.
Sirius gently embraced his younger brother, letting Reg cry onto his sleeve. “I’ll always be here for you, Reg,” he whispered. “Always.”
Tears burned his eyes as he hugged Reggie fiercely, never letting go. He would protect his younger brother. Forever and always. Always and forever.
“Hey, little cuz!” Andy called, vaulting over the table to join them. “What’s wrong?”
Sirius glanced up, and muttered, “Bellatrix.”
“Ah, damn. However, I have an idea for a prank…”
Even Regulus looked up at that. Sirius grinned, the mischievous grin that only a seven-year-old can wear. “Let’s hear it.”
Andromeda grinned, and Sirius groaned, knowing that look. “Let’s get you two clean, first..."

For the ask game, "Santa's on his way" - Jughead is a mall Santa, Betty is the photographer!
Hey babe, sorry it’s taken a while to get this out here. As I told you on Discord, there’s going to be two parts. I hope you enjoy what I have so far! This is entirely unedited, I will post it on the Archive fully edited when I get the chance!
Santa’s On His Way
“He is the skinniest Santa that I have ever seen,” Betty told Cheryl as she adjusted her tripod. “Where on earth did you find him?”
“He applied for the job,” Cheryl answered, tapping her long red nails on her travel coffee mug. “His background check came back clean and I couldn’t see any reason not to hire him. We’ll just have to make sure he’s padded really well. The kids won’t know the difference, they’ll be excited that they get to meet Santa. Oh come on Betty, don’t look at me like that. He was better than a lot of the guys I interviewed. One of them came in drunk and another one smelled like Philly cheese steak. I couldn’t very well unleash either of those men on the general public. Try and be nice—”
“Hey, Miss Blossom, I think this costume is a little too large for me.”
“I could have sworn I ordered one in your size!” Cheryl said. “Hold on, I’m going to check my office and see if it was actually delivered. Try and get to know your photographer while I’m gone, Forsythe.”
“Forsythe?” Betty raised any eyebrow as Cheryl clacked off.
“Or you could just call me Nick,” he replied as he hitched up his pants.
“Nick. Haha, very funny.”
“Everybody calls me Jughead. Trust me, I don’t think it’s as bad as Forsythe,” he said. “So, what’s your name?”
“Elizabeth. But everybody calls me Betty.” She lifted her camera and made sure it was charged for the 100th time that morning before taking a preliminary shot of Jughead.
Jughead frowned as the shutter clicked. “Do you have to take pictures?” he asked.
“It’s part of the job. Or did you not read your contract carefully before you signed on the dotted line?”
“Of course I read my contract!” Jughead groused. “But there was nothing in it about taking pictures when a child isn’t sitting in my lap.”
“No pouting! Santa Claus is coming to town!” Betty joked.
“I am Santa,” Jughead reminded her, rolling his eyes. “I think I’ve already come to town.”
“Well, you better not pout all the same. Kids don’t want to see a grumpy Santa and I can tell you parents will be less than thrilled to have to pay for pictures if you aren’t smiling.”
Jughead faked a grin. “Are you happy?”
Betty shook her head, her antler headband jingled. “You look like a serial killer. Don’t you know how to smile nicely?”
“Do you get paid to tell the mall Santas how to do their jobs?” Jughead retorted.
Betty was about to reply when she was interrupted by Cheryl.
“Your suit was in the office!” Cheryl said, holding it out towards him. “You better go to the locker room and get changed. Don’t waste my time on your account of being a hooligan! The kids are going to start lining up to see you any minute and you cannot allow them to see you as anything other than Christopher Kringle!”
“Cheryl, you really need to relax.”
“Christmas is a billion dollar industry! There is no way I’m going to relax. We don’t want people taking their children to Greendale to see Santa when they see Jughead as a civilian!”
“A civilian?” Betty shook her head. “You’re crazy, Cher.”
Jughead returned a few minutes later, fully clothed as Santa Claus. “Okay,” he said. “I’m ready. Are you happy?”
“Very. I have to go and do a few things in the office. You two enjoy yourselves! Toodles!”
.
Betty stifled a yawn. There was nothing she hated more than having to go to the mall early on a Sunday morning. She usually went to mass and had breakfast with an elderly couple at her church. She looked in her rearview mirror and fixed her elf ears headband before pulling herself out of her car.
She wandered into the mall and found Jughead lounging on Santa’s chair, checking his text messages.
“You look like you can’t deal this morning,” he commented.
Two weeks with parents and kids from hell had cemented their status as friends. She smiled at him and handed him a cup of coffee. “I stopped at Starbucks for you. I didn’t know what you liked, so I just ordered you an espresso.”
“That’s fine with me,” Jughead replied, taking it gratefully. “I had to sew a tutu last night. I barely got any sleep. I’d drink gas station coffee. I can’t be jolly and bright without caffeine.”
“Really? Is that all it takes?” Betty teased. “If I had known that, I would have hooked you up to a caffeine drip the first day we met.”
“I’m sure I wasn’t that bad,” Jughead replied.
“You looked like a serial killer.”
“Stop saying I looked like a serial killer! I did not look like a serial killer.”
“You weren’t smiling.”
Jughead shook his head. “You know what, new rule. I can’t talk until I finish my coffee. Because you’re annoying when I’m running on 3 hours of sleep.”
“I was sewing a tutu,” Jughead replied.
“A tutu?” Betty repeated. “What are you not telling me, Jones?”
Jughead cleared his throat. “I have a younger sister. I take care of her because our parents died in a car accident. I don’t like to talk about it, I know you’re sorry. We’re fine.”
“What’s your sister’s name?” Betty asked.
“Don’t laugh, okay? Her name is Forsythia—”
“Forsythia?” Betty raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t your name Forsythie?”
“It was my father’s idea. I think if my mom had it her way, she would have named us something a little more normal like Ellie and James. But dad insisted and he always got his way.”
“Will you two stop standing around? We only have a few more minutes until customers show up!” Cheryl interrupted.
Betty shook her head. “Coming!” she turned and smoothed an errant strand of hair away from Jughead’s face. “I’ll talk to you later.”
.
The next day, Betty showed up at work and Jughead wasn’t there. Reggie Mantle, the Santa Claus from the year before, was sitting in his chair looking less like Santa and more like he belonged on the December page in a firefighter calendar.
She barely acknowledged his presence before going to her cousin’s office. “Where’s Jughead!?” she demanded. “I thought we both agreed Reggie wasn’t a good Santa!”
“Don’t get your Christmas panties in a twist. He couldn’t come in because he needed to take his sister to the doctor.”
“Reggie?” Betty raised any eyebrow. “Surely you could have found somebody else. I thought you hated him because he slept with you and didn’t call afterwards.”
“I called everyone on my substitute list and he was the only one who could fill in,” Cheryl explained. “Believe me, I would have rather it been anyone else but him. Beggars can’t be choosers though, so he’s here. You don’t have to like it, you just have to work with him.”
Betty sighed in exasperation. “Fine, I will.”
After work was over, Betty texted Jughead.
B - Tell me where you live. I’m going to swing by and bring you something to eat.
She waited for a few seconds and then her phone pinged.
J - You really don’t have to do that.
B - I WANT too!!!
J - JB has the flu, highly contagious.
B - I got the flu shot. I’ll take my chances. What do you guys want to eat?
There was a while between replies. She took the time to clock out and put her coat on.
J - She asked if you could bring some dakgaejang from Eun’s.
B - I’m getting in the car now. What would you like?
J - I’m game with anything you bring.
B - Okay. I’ll see you soon!
She put in order with a local Korean restaurant and went to pick it up. When she got into her car again, Jughead had messaged her his address. She plugged it into her GPS and followed the instructions exactly.
When she got to their apartment, she grabbed the big brown paper sack and took the elevator. She didn’t know why she was suddenly so nervous to see him. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Jughead opened it wearing a fisherman’s sweater and jeans. He looked thinner than he did when he was wearing his Santa suit.
She swallowed, barely able to look at him because she was suddenly aware of how attractive he was and how messy she looked. “Here you go!” she held out the bag for him.
“Thank you,” Jughead replied, leaning against the door and looking at her. “Do you want to come in and eat with us? We’re watching Christmas movies on Netflix. Also, I think JB would like to meet you.”
Betty couldn’t think of a reason not to stay, so she nodded weakly and followed Jughead inside.
