Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.

A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.

Story of Minglan - watching

i'm obssessively watching Story of Ming Lan and it's very slow building up everything and the first three episodes are Very Confusing - I wish they had nametags - and there's still things we didn't see!

i would like to see the introduction of House Qi to House Sheng and how Yuanruo (Qi Heng, Heir of Duke of Qi) came be at their academy at all. (i think. Yuanruo is his courtesy name...)

(I will assume it's because the teacher Zhang and House Qi was like: oh, he can hang out at the Sheng House! Maybe Sheng Hong (ineffectual dad) and the Duke of Qi hit it off at Court)

more of changbai, the second child/eldest brother; he seems very amicable and Ming Lan was so happy to see him place high; i would like to see more of their relationship early on

really more of the brothers; there always Shit Happen at the ladies' courtyards; are the brothers just hiding in their rooms??? XD

there's a scene in episode 15 where the whole place is circus

and they mention changbai and tingye (second son of Marquis Gu) are in the house but it smash cuts to Tingye and his manservant Shito (Shee-to) roughing up some servants for them (to stop them from reporting private affairs to a guardhouse)

Hualan (Eldest Child, eldest sister) tells them about the polo match but Hualan does not actually seem to be at the polo match... very sad.

apparently, there's a 78 episode version; i'm watching the 73 episode version on Viki Rakuten... maybe the longer versions has the missing scenes I want...

I'm on episode 21 but I am kinda burnt out for a bit so I am taking a short break...

so quick note, there seems to be five ranks of nobles (royalty not included): duke (gong - 1st rank) marquis (hou - 2nd rank), earl/court (bo - 3rd rank), viscout (zi - 4th rank) and baron (nan - 5th rank).

so Duke is 1st rank and Baron is 5th; the protagonist's house of Sheng is a fifth rank house and Duke is considered too high for them to marry. which is why i'm confused as to why Yuanrou is studying with them

also: the men only wear One hairstyle in this drama (Northern Song Dynasty) and it's topknots. I miss the long hair (and braids) of other dramas... like Princess' Agents Northern Wei) I still don't understand why it's called Princess Agents

This is Zheng Yecheng's first film and television work. He played the role of a player named Lollipop who participated in a large-scale game competition in this movie. He only appeared in a few scenes.

In this drama, Zheng Yecheng played the role of Gao Mai, a high school student who, together with Luo Jianjun, played by Zhang Guoli, formed a "father and son on the road" duo. This was Zheng Yecheng's first time playing an important role that spanned the entire series. Gao Mai, who eagerly hoped for his parents to reconcile, initially harbored hostility towards Luo Jianjun, who suddenly intruded into their lives. Gao Mai misunderstood Luo Jianjun, thinking he reported his father to the authorities, resulting in his father's imprisonment and his marriage to his mother for the sake of property. His performance was three-dimensional and heartfelt, evoking empathy. I’ve done a similar rec list here before, but always happy to do up a new one (´,,•ω•,,)♡ I’ve sorted the below based on my own ratings: all-time faves, 5 stars, 4 stars, and others I’ve heard are good but have not yet read or don’t intend to read any time soon.

I won’t go into too much detail for each and will leave out my typical rambling commentaries (my other post has enough of that *cough*) but I’ll note the genres and leave links (including to @minmoyu min’s much more detailed recs where available) for you to explore~ do watch out for the trigger warnings some of them have though (novelupdates will have more detailed tags). leaving out mxtx ones since most would be familiar with those. all art below are from fanartists on lofter, permissions for repost under the cut!

there are quite a number of titles below (and there are a lot more out there asdklfklf) but a great start would be to select based on the genres you like, and after you’ve read a few, the author’s writing styles! my quick take on the writing styles of authors I’ve read a few books of below:

huai shang: I REALLY love huai shang (*^^*)♡ she has a good balance of plot, action, humour, and mystery - and she often writes her CPs (couples) as a... very identifiable trope that I ADORE

priest: another big name in danmei and her brain is the one true galaxy brain like really plot heavy and intense and you’ll really need to focus when reading her works. another running gag for priest works is that it’s really difficult to guess who’s the top and bottom in her CPs (lmao) and her bedroom scenes (fun fact in chinese slang, these scenes are referred to as ppp or 车 “chē” literally: car) are like... blink and you’ll miss it (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)

meatbun: ANGST QUEEN. another plot heavy author (but not as intense as priest) but she does inner thoughts and emotional scenes EXTREMELY well. a lot of 车 (opposite end of spectrum from priest) but these aren’t written for the sake of it; they actually do play a role in the plot

ok now the titles aha (disclaimer: I tend to enjoy mystery, detective, modern, and apocalyptic genres more so the titles and ratings below might are definitely skewing towards these)

Be With You (2020)

Summary

A young cartoonist intentionally gets near Ji Yan Xin, a cold and arrogant professor. Qi Nian, a girl with a straightforward personality hopes that interacting with Ji Yan Xin would give her inspiration and creative materials for her comic plot. Coincidentally Ji Yan Xin’s younger brother Ji Si Qi becomes Qi Nian’s assistant and a catalyst for their relationship to progress and blossom.

Review

Be With You is the type of drama that is made for pure entertainment whereby you shouldn’t put on your thinking cap while watching. Just treat it as dramaland fantasy and you would probably enjoy it. I would also see it as being targeted at a younger set of audience. Maybe that is why it doesn’t resonate with me and I have to force myself to finish it quickly for the purpose of this review. The good thing is it is short and I could avoid the temptation of abandoning it halfway through. Girl Chasing Guy Drama If you like romance dramas that see the girl taking the initiative to pursue the guy, then Be With You would fit the bill. This theme is similar to Begin Again but without the same depth to its story. I guess this is to be expected as Be With You is a rom-com after all. So, it is not a drama that you would see serious character growth and deep exploration of feelings unlike the more intense romance in You Are My Destiny or Here To Heart. Of course, it is perfectly alright to have a simple plot especially for a rom-com. But where Be With You is lacking to me is the mandatory sweetness which drives this type of dramas. I understand different people will have different standards of what constitutes sweetness in a romance. If you see a much older and domineering man taking the reins in the relationship as sweet, then you would like this couple. It is an unequal relationship albeit a protective one given that the guy is much more matured compared to the girl. Personally, I’m more into couples that have mutual respect for each other like the one in Love Is Sweet. That is why it is a little hard for me to root for the couple in Be With You. This is not to say that I can’t accept an older man and younger woman romance. It also has to do with the couple dynamics and personality which bring up my next point. Male Lead’s Character Flaw A much older and successful male lead is nothing new in a rom-com just like Lu Jin in Dating In the Kitchen. But the female lead in Gu Sheng Nan is gutsy with a spine and hence, the relationship is able to generate the required sparks for it to be exciting. Comparatively, Qi Nian in Be With You is much meeker. With Professor Ji’s character being a controlling one, it is not exactly an ideal romantic couple in my books. Of course, no one is perfect and the saving grace is Professor Ji does love Qi Nian and is aware of his own controlling nature. Thus, you really have to get over Professor Ji’s flaws to be able to enjoy this rom-com. If you start dissecting his character like I did, the romantic vibes will immediately take a dive especially if you also prefer couples that are more equal in terms of power dynamics in their relationship. Chemistry Could Be Better The chemistry between Ji Xiao Bing and Zhang Ya Qin is not exactly bad but there is definitely room for improvement. It is passable for a simple rom-com but it fails to lift it to its full potential. I don’t think that their acting is the problem though. Perhaps the nature of the characters that they play makes it a little hard to generate more sizzling interactions between them. I would think that if one character is too dominant and there is a lack of tender moments between them, it will indeed be hard for the chemistry to flow naturally. This is in contrast to say, Perfect And Casual, whereby the chemistry of the leads really drives the drama as the sweetness is magnified in each interaction. My Verdict – It’s Nothing Special Be With You is the type of drama that you would watch when you have absolutely nothing better to do and want to indulge in some fairytale romance. As mentioned, the plot is simple and whether it will come off as sweet will depend on your ability to overlook faults in the male lead who also seems to be toying with the female lead’s affections at times. Hence, he is very different from the suave and almost perfect male lead in Intense Love which is also a fairytale-like romance drama. A further word of warning is that this short drama also has 2 other couple stories included. Hence, they take up quite a bit of

screen time overall especially the second couple of Si Qi and Qing Wu. If you like the secondary pairing, it will be the icing on the cake. If not, it can be annoying because they take up the majority of the screen time around Episode 18 onwards which is similar to the problem in Love Designer as it progresses towards the ending. For this Be With You 2020 drama review, I would give it a score of 6.5/10. It is really nothing new from the plot to the characters that it is hard to justify giving it a higher score. Watch it if you absolutely like stress-free rom-coms for a little escapism. Don’t think too much though if you really want to enjoy it. But if you are the type who can’t help but want a more perfect male lead and heartfelt romance, then drop it. Be With You would be hard put to satisfy the cravings for a fulfilling romance story.
