Personality: Hellendil is a sweet, outgoing boy who places a high value on friendships and those he cares about. He has a strong desire to help those in need which sometimes leads him to neglect his own needs. He is soft hearted and often finds himself upset when his actions cause emotional or physical harm to someone or something he cares about. He is intelligent and enjoys reading and studying, especially with a companion. He generally has trouble with decision making because he tends to look at all possible perspectives to weigh the options. He dislikes conflict and would prefer to find a diplomatic solution, but is aware that is not always an option.

Wore the dark arts outfit his first day of classes and promptly traded it for leather armor/adventure gear.

Received the scar on his right brow while fighting the troll in Hogsmeade with Natty.

He adores Thestrals and will stop to watch them anytime he sees them. He also prefers riding one to using a broom.

Family: Hellendil is the youngest of four children and one of two to inherit magical ability from his mother.

His mother is a metal charmer and jeweler from Wales, who met his father when traveling in search of suppliers of metals and precious gems for her art. His father is a muggle blacksmith/metal worker who was blissfully unaware of the magical world until their meeting. His love for her was strong enough that it endured the shock of finding out she was a witch. They married and resettled in Wales where they raised their four children.

Everybody say hello to Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons: activist, teacher, and researcher. Born in 1944 Memphis, Gwendolyn was the first generation in her family to attend college (Spelman, 1962). She credits her grandmother, Rhonda Bell Robinson, with having instilled in her the family's history and its reckoning with slavery, her own hardships growing up as a sharecropper, and how Mississippi was objectively the "worst of the worst" for Black people. Gwendolyn solemnly promised her grandmother that she would never go to Mississippi. (And don't even get her started on the epic confrontations with teachers and school officials about the "inappropriateness of her hair." Boy, it's sure nice that that sort of racial dress-code pettiness isn't a thing anymore, huh?)

In the 1960's, inspired by several Spelman professors (to include Howard Zinn), Gwendolyn actively and enthusiastically became involved in the SNCC against her family's wishes. She participated in sit-ins and endured several arrests, ultimately jeopardizing her Spelman scholarship. She helped prepare curricula for Freedom Schools and coordinated mock voter registrations, working under Bob Moses (see Lesson 112 in this series) and alongside James Forman and her fellow Spelman alum Ruby Doris Smith-Robinson (see Lesson 66). Eventually she came into the orbit of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and ultimately found herself taking over as director of the Mississippi Summer Project in 1964 when its previous director, Lester McKinney, had been picked up by Laurel police. She herself was arrested in Jackson following a march; being held, beaten and tortured for 15 days in a makeshift prison constructed on the county fairgrounds.

Gwendolyn later moved briefly to New York, and then to Atlanta where she worked on Julian Bond's state campaign (see Lesson 72). She continued to work with the local chapter of the SNCC, authoring a controversial position paper on Black Power that argued against expelling its white members. Around this time Gwendolyn also (unsurprisingly) found herself on the FBI's notorious Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO) target list. Inspired by the speeches of Malcolm X, Gwendolyn joined Nation Of Islam in the late 1960's and changed her name to Zoharah (also taking her husband Michael Simmons' last name), and moved to Philadelphia. However her strong feminist principles contravened a number of NOI teachings, putting her at odds with the organization's stance on women as submissive helpmeets. Over the next 20 years she worked for the American Friends Service Committee, travelling to Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and (significantly) Palestine.

Gwendolyn retired from the University of Florida in 2019; conducting and leading research that explores Islamic feminism and the cultural impact of Sharia law on Muslim women. Today Simmons is senior lecturer emerita, continuing to travel and lecture on gender equality, and on many other issues affecting Black Americans, feminism, and social inequities. Her and Michael Simmons' daughter Aishah Shahidah Simmons, is herself an accomplished documentary filmmaker. (Teachers: Need some resources to engage your students this Black History Month? Dear William,

I have only heard stories from the magnificent and talented Prefect. But the stories can't compete with the original. You do a fantastic job and it should be rewarded. I don't know if I could get my hands on all the pastel shades, but the colours would look wonderful on a canvas, don't you think? But don't forget that you should also go to a certain Wolf. There's a Christmas hat with wolf ears to match the occasion. I think the lavender-coloured fabric really brings out the ears.

William does think that he should be rewarded for all of his hard work, yes! Some prefects do the bare minimum: just catching culprits, and giving orders, and taking points away. William Abbott goes above and beyond in his duties! He is fair and he does not discriminate! [According to his own judgement, of course] If sometimes he allows some rules to be broken — it is only because some of them are outdated and do more harm than good. Nothing worthwhile comes from being stuck in detention all day long but if a detainee helps with some things around the school that Will considers important — everybody is happy!

So what is it with this letter that smells of cinnamon? He has had his suspicions for a long time and at this point all the clues point to this one particular Hufflepuff who has been infiltrating other dorms. The handwriting and the owl that delivers the letters; the cat hair on his pillow; the smell of cinnamon that sometimes can be caught on Pascal and sniffed out near the Hufflepuff dorms. But time passes by fast and perhaps Will does not have enough frustration left in him to do something about it. Especially when the culprit continues to send him cookies and little gifts. Will decides to ignore the pickle drawn on the paper.

The Slytherin decides to check if he is correct in his assumptions and sends a letter reply straight to Gwendolyn.

Dear Gwen! We have had our share of... situations this year, haven't we? I might let my eyes close on some of them as one of your Christmas presents but I still would like you to know that at this school we value fairness and honesty! But I will be keeping an eye on you not only to make sure you don't get others in trouble but to protect you as well. You should know you can always rely on me and if there are situations when you need a favour or two — I can provide you with relevant information and set some things up. Not for free, of course: the wheel keeps turning, and so everyone else has to pay the price someday. Lucky for you my prices aren't too high and they usually help other students in need.

Will pauses for a moment, realizing, that he doesn't sound really Christmasy in his letter and that he might change the tactics.

All that aside, I sincerely thank you for the presents and wish you a wonderful Christmas and Happy Holidays! I have received your baked goods [ah, Will, again, soften up your language, you are not at a warehouse!], and I have to say that they are absolutely delicious. "Puppy eyes again..." grumbles the Scribe but gets up from the couch nonetheless, opens the envelope, and places the letter for Richard on the table to read. The following dictation ensues.*

I am glad to hear that it went without a pickle! I mean, that you didn't get yourself in a pickle! It's a surprise that somebody managed to utilise the vegetables in such a manner and turn such a... spooky surprise into something good. But if somebody could do it — it's the Slytherin's prefect. This particular Abbott is very resourceful and I've heard that it's better to be on his good side. You never know what kind of favour you might need.

I wish you luck in your endeavors! But please be kind to the prefect, he went through something rather traumatic. Hopefully, this experience will toughen him up!

The Chicago Defender was founded (1905) by Robert Sengstacke Abbott. He published the first issue, a run of 300 copies, on May 6, 1905. The Defender began as a four-page weekly handbill filled with local news and reproductions of clippings from other newspapers. He sold both subscriptions and advertising for the paper by going door-to-door throughout Chicago.

He used the Defender as a forum to attack racial injustice from the outset, and included a front-page heading on every issue that read, “American Race Justice Must Be Destroyed”. The Defender was a leading advocate in the fight against racial, economic, and social discrimination. It championed equal employment and fair housing for Blacks, and boldly reported on lynchings, rapes, and Black disfranchisement. By 1915 the local newspaper had a weekly circulation of 16,000.

The Defender saw its major growth during the Great Migration and is credited as being a major catalyst for that movement of half a million Blacks from the South to the North (1915-20). He used Black Pullman Porters and entertainers to transport his paper across the Mason-Dixon Line. He printed copies of train schedules and job listings to entice southern Blacks to relocate. The Black population of Chicago increased by 148 percent with plenty of support and encouragement from the Defender.

It became the first African American paper to reach a circulation of 100,000 copies and to achieve national circulation. Its circulation reached 230,000 copies per week. The Defender had many notable columnists, including Walter White and Langston Hughes. It published the early works of poet Gwendolyn Brooks. As a result of the Defender’ssuccess, he became one of the first African American millionaires.

Upon his death, John H. Sengstacke, his nephew, assumed control of the Defender. The Defender became a daily and was renamed the Chicago Daily Defender. It was the largest Black-owned daily newspaper in the world. He purchased a long-time rival newspaper The Pittsburgh Courier and added it to his chain of papers which includes The Michigan Chronicle, and The Tri-State Defender. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Adira had spent the better part of the beginning of the night searching for Blaise or Sun. Or her sister, to be honest. Everything had fallen apart so quickly, and with her wand at the ready, she’d fought her way around, desperately searching for someone she cared for. In the end, she’d not found any of them, and returned to the Great Hall empty handed, only a few stray curls and a nasty bruise on her right shoulder to show for it. She’d been lucky--rarely before was she lucky. One family had not been--the Abbotts had lost one of their own, and she immediately searched for Blaise, to try and offer him some comfort. Who she found first, though, was her ex. “--Gwen,” she greeted, moving to sit down next to the other girl. “Gwen, I’m so sorry.”
