Remember, that wars are rarely won in a week, I am in trenches since last summer when i ditched my phone, when i say "It takes time" i mean 5–10 months. It is still hard, but the improvement is amazing.

This is a list of things I have been doing for more than a year that improved my life. Ranked with ease (EAS) + effectiveness (EFF) from 1 to 10.

It is still not perfect, but this is a warzone and you will adapt and not be allowed to surrender, soldier!

Remove the smartphone – 5 eas + 15 eff

Sorry. This is a military grade weapon that milliards of dollars are put into to make you waste your time as easily as you can. You can move forward with your phone, but nothing is as effective in taking control back during your commutes, breaks, walks and free time etc. and it is a very important part of learning to deal with stress without mindless scrolling and games. There is no real phone hacks to help you. We and the enemy know that timers don't work. If you can enable all enemy weapons with one switch it is not enough.

You will need a dumbphone or a custom rom to use this technique and stay in society.

It is not as hard as it sounds, actually you don't need it that much. Check out #dumbphone or r/dumbphones for inspiration and support. Me and many of my friends who done it as well don't look back.

Yes you can. But if you insist, still, buy a dumbphone or find one in the drawers and put your sim card there; carry them both. Now you can use the Internet only when you have wifi, but you can use offline maps, listen to downloaded music and watch downloaded movies, read pdfs etc. Check your email, bank, messages, memes at work or at home. You will regain control over walks, commutes and socialising. But if you still have any social apps, at home or during breaks, you are still cooked. It is still a very good first step to moving away from phone dependence.

Smartphone substitutes

Email, socials, work, school – all will now be done on a pc or a laptop. This is good. It allows you to distance yourself from stress, tiring family members, school, work and problems of others and engage with them only when you want to. It allows you to take a break. It is not your duty, to engage all the time and the ability to do so at your own pace is the biggest advantage you can get on the battlefield. If something important is going on — someone will call you, don't worry. Just inform others that WhatsApp is not a place to discuss emergencies.

Fun, music, reading – you will need to get a dumbphone that supports some music, pdf viewing, photos and maybe light web browsing, they do exist. Or just buy an mp3 player, some books and a notepad. An e-reader and a camera for the high tech soldiers. Y2K is back in fashion anyway, and you will be much cooler and people will start conversations. Having everything in one place was convenient, but, if it means having time–wasting hazards in your pocket, it is not worth it.

Block the feed — 10 eas + 4 eff

Hopefully you got rid of your phone, the biggest danger now is your web browser.

Use LeechBlock to block or regulate access to the biggest dangers – youtube, instagram, fb, reddit. On the weak side it is no better than the timer in your phone, supportive, but not really effective and fills you with guilt. Guilt is bad.

On the strong side you will block all access, allow very rare and short usage, put as many defenses as you can, put blockades on your blockades. Your brain is very effective at overcoming barriers, but they need to be put in place.

It is the first step, but it is not enough to win the war. Real psychological effects will show only after months of usage and well adjusted settings that acknowledge how your brain works and as you adapt your barriers will need to adapt as well. On the flip-side it requires no real conscious work or wasting your willpower if your filters are good.

You will sometimes need to bend the rules, to fix something or watch a lecture or a tutorial or just for some well deserved Forgotten Vines Compilation. Remember to put them back in place later and spot the times where you never did — and do it then.

Warning: nerd shit! (3-6) eas + (7-10) eff

If your friends sent you a funny video — don't unlock the site to watch it. Use external software like MPV or VLC to watch this video using only the link, without getting rid of your defense line. This is easiest on a linux machine.

You also have the nuke – block websites on your router and gate settings. You will need the support of the rest of the war room members in your house to use it and it will cut access to actually useful things. But this is a war for your life and every sacrifice is worth it.

Block the biggest hazards — 6 eas + 9 eff

Sorry, but you will need to use some nerd tactics.

Shorts, reels, tik toks, explore, for you pages. They need to be blocked immediately and for good. No access, no overrides, no fiddling in options. LeechBlock browser addon will allow you to block specific pages with harder barriers. Do it and never change them.

They are the biggest danger and you know it. Your brain will not be mad if it won't get dopamine this way, it knows you would never find the perfect 1 minute video that would make you happy. The urge to scroll some shorts will go away real fast.

This will allow you to fight only the easier fights — against the normal infinite feeds.

UblockOrigin

Is a double edged sword. Removing ads makes your life on the internet easy and fun. It is only a good thing to a certain extent – our fight is to make some parts of the internet as hard and painful to use – but it will help you keep your sanity.

Use it to block the feed! Click on Ublock icon and use the little pipette to add a rule that blocks the infinite feed on webpages of your choice.

Select the area and click the blue button to create a rule on the main page. Now you will not be distracted with algorithmic content, but you are free to not block groups important for you or your work or still see notifications, messages and other functions.

Cons: sometimes your rules will break with time, you will need to make many of them. Removing ads from youtube is dangerous as the reward is easier to obtain, thus making the boobytrap more effective.

Don't use apps and don't use the browser. 10 eas + 6 eff

Minimize a chance of getting distracted while doing something else.

For messages, school and work remove the browser from the equation. Use desktop clients for messaging, microsoft office, Teams, email etc. They have exactly what you need and are often more convenient to use. No chance of opening Instagram in excel.

For social media and online entertainment use the browser, don't use the apps! You are going into the warzone, you will need the armor – Leechblock and other addons are here to help you. Time wasting apps are engineered to remove your personal defense – never use them.

No Screentime before coffee – 1 eas + 10 eff

This one is behavioral and requires actual brain work, but give yourself some time and it will give you great effects.

Do not check memes, messages, mail etc. before waking up. Easier said than done.

Going to school or work will be easier, waking up will be easier, you will start to eat and have more energy during the day.

It will require you to plan your day in advance, check the calendar and your plan for the day the night before. I never learned it as a child and it is very hard to work on it, but the effects on my psyche are immense.

If you got rid of your phone, you are halfway there. If you can remove your laptop from proximity of your bed — do it. If you have an ability to put your pc in a seperate room — it would be perfect, but not many are able to, including me.

Separate your working, from sleeping, from entertainment spaces, we worked on it during COVID soldier, don't forget your training.

Remove the noise — 1 eas + 4 eff

somewhat. You probably don't actually need podcasts and music to work, walk or sleep and regaining your ability to focus there is also important. Maybe substitute them with white/pink/brown noise at least sometimes, especially for brain heavy tasks this is very helpful to get work done in a reasonable amount of time. Blanket app is a good desktop noise generator that won't require the browser.

But I will not blame you if you won't, this is the least problematic part and humans have always met to do menial tasks while hearing others talk and many conditions are easier to live with some background noise.

Pick your allies

Internet is a meadow and a minefield. Place for art and support and knowledge filled with weapons designed to use you as an revenue generator. Watch content only from curated, quality places and people you follow. Never look at the algorithmic feed. Tumblr is a prime example of a site that can be your ally, but don't trust it – block the For You page.

don't lose your steam

Do not engage emotionally with things beyond your control. This was the twitter's weapon of choice. If you do not have the money or time to support a cause, you know about it and you know all your mutuals already support it – don't let the algorithm put it down your throat against your will.

Do not follow war hashtags, do not look at pages when you can see hate and violence against your will. Educate yourself, do as much as you can, follow people who inspire you and do real work, but allow yourself to move on if it is beyond your abilities or strength. Your local anarchist group will do more good in a month, than you reading political posts for years. If you honestly care – join them and focus on real work. If you can't contribute, just learn about it and move on. There will be more opportunities in the future and then we will need all your strength. This is the sad part of winning the war. Some sacrifices have to be made.

Someone hacked my original FB account many, many years ago. I haven't been able to sign into it for over a decade. All my messages to FB asking them to delete it went unanswered. Then last month, just out of the blue it let me sign in.

Looking at my theology back then (when I was still mostly a Pentecostal and only begrudgingly acknowledging that some Reformed points of view were indeed, biblical) was really cringe. I can't believe I posted some of that stuff. But it gave me access to some family members accounts that I hadn't been able to message in years and photos of my mother, sister and brother I no longer had…

…except, about an hour after it let me sign back in, FB restricted the account for 30 days over something that was posted (by the hacker apparently, who lives(d) in Texas according to the log in info) in 2016, long after I'd lost access and started asking FB to delete the account. The 30 days ends tomorrow.

As someone who is very familiar with both The Sandman and Tales from the Flat Earth, I agree with absolutely everything you wrote.

I’m still mulling over the fact whether I should write about this myself (edit: I finally did), but I fear the horse has bolted. I’ve already spent far too much time over the past days to shed some light on this someplace else (with a few other people who also read both, but they are few and far between), and I don’t know if I have further time, patience and energy left to keep on trying. But at the same time, I think it is important that more people who know both works give their views. Because at the moment, we get posts with over 25,000 notes who are mostly accepted as “truth”—by people who often haven’t read either, or just one of these works. At least read both The Sandman and Tales from the Flat Earth to come to your own conclusions before you add to the spreading of what is (in my view at least) misinformation.

These works are nothing alike bar some superficial similarities and literary archetypes. The FB post by Matthew Boroson is a bad faith take that’s also factually wrong in many, many places. So I’m still thinking about taking each of his claims and showing people, with screenshots etc, how factually wrong they actually are. I just don’t know if it still makes a difference at this point, because many people have made up their minds anyway, and it’s an opportune message.

And the fanart he shared that’s also in your post—yeah, it’s fanart. If you look at the actual artwork especially inside the first edition of e.g. Night’s Master, and also if you read the physical description of Azhrarn in the books, they are probably less alike than people think, bar the superficial similarities of “pale skin, black hair, dark garments.” Which was essentially what 8/10 male protagonists in the dark fantasy genre looked like at the time, but that just as an aside… Minds fill in blanks, you know?

This does nothing—neither for Tanith Lee, who absolutely deserves a larger audience, nor for a much larger problem at hand:

It detracts from what really matters here. Boroson’s not even thinly veiled, “You should believe the victims because I know—I KNOW—he also did this,” is problematic for so many reasons, I don’t even know where to start.

Even if we assumed “heavy borrowing without credit” (he never said it was plagiarised—that mostly came to fruition after a friend of Tanith claimed NG plagiarised whole paragraphs of one of her works, but that she never disclosed which one it was), which it honestly isn’t:

The slant of, “Believe his SA victims because I’m telling you he’s also not crediting for inspiration” (which isn’t a crime btw, it’s only bad style. Plagiarism is obviously different) is hugely problematic. It’s also not as if we need your blessing to believe something, Matthew. These two things shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence. It’s not like one gives the other more credibility.

We should believe SA victims. Full stop.

As for the other excellent points you make: I also agree, and I think many people are struggling with the cognitive dissonance brought up by “shitty people can create good art”. So their minds start reaching for something that gets rid of that discomfort.

And it’s obviously easier to say, “I liked this work by a terrible person, but they were always a hack anyway and didn’t even really create it,” than to say, “I need to find a way to recontextualise a work, and that’s maybe uncomfortable and, above all, takes time.”

Because people don’t want to take that time. They feel they immediately need to rush to a public statement, an action, an opinion piece to disassociate themselves.

Anyway: More people reading Tanith Lee is the most positive outcome of this. I just wish more people had cared about her before this, because for some, reading her works will now be a performative activity that is still all about NG and not about her. Shortly after she and some other women went public about it, there were some people who chimed in talking about other misdeeds of his.

Her ex was, and is, a loathsome waste of oxygen, and the words, "...who deserves every accusation leveled at him" would almost escape my lips...

This did not help my friend at all! It muddied the waters, and gave her awful ex ammunition for his claims that people were just out to get him, and were willing to make stuff up to smear him.

Switching gears: there's been a lot of discussion recently about how some brilliant and influential art has been created by objectively terrible people. Part of that discussion has been calling out people saying, "Their work always sucked," or "I never liked it." Not only are statements like this unhelpful, they provide cover for predators. If you insist that your tastes reflect your morality, you're giving yourself a huge blind spot, and making it easy to dismiss evidence of harm done by creators you happen to like.

This is one reason why I think exhibits like this one are important: they help teach that lesson.

Three notes on this: 1. by the time of that exhibition, Gill was long dead and therefore unable to profit from it.

2. This kind of thing isn't necessary for every artist, because not every creator does heinous things.

If someone mentions a bespectacled British boy wizard with an owl familiar, in a modern setting with "secret world" magic, the name that springs to mind is most likely "Harry Potter", right?

But Timothy Hunter, from The Books of Magic, was published a full seven years before that. I was working in a bookstore when the novelizations for the BoM comics came out, and had to tell kids that no, this was not a HP rip-off.

I don't think the reverse was true, either: for one thing, The Books of Magic is set in the DC Universe, and I've never heard of JKR reading superhero comics. But also... sometimes completely separate creators will come up with strikingly similar ideas, utterly by coincidence. It's one reason why most authors tell fans NOT to send them ideas or fanfiction based on their work: there is rarely any good way to prove that you didn't steal a concept.

Now, obviously every creator is influenced by other people's works, and I completely agree that it's good to acknowledge that and to point fans towards your influences!

When Rowling began channeling her resources into making life worse for trans folk, I saw a lot of people saying, "Well, Harry Potter was just a mediocre rip-off of The Worst Witch anyway."

While I haven't read that series, I strongly doubt this claim. The idea of magic schools is older and more widespread than either of those series, and "British boarding school hijinks, but it's a magic school" was bound to be written more than once.

Now, some of you already know, and others have looked up, who originally wrote Tim Hunter. And... yeah, it's Neil Gaiman. *sigh*

In the last few days, I've seen some people saying, "The Sandman ripped off Tanith Lee's Tales from the Flat Earth." They cite a number of similarities: Azhrarn, the Lord of Darkness, is a pale-skinned, raven-haired Byronic figure with a sibling-like relationship to the Lord of Death and the Lord of Madness. Like the Endless, these beings are god-like, but specifically not gods. Apparently some people have mistaken fanart of Azhrarn for Morpheus. And Chuz, Prince Madness, has a bisected appearance, half his face horribly messed up, like the demoness Mazikeen.

But speaking as someone who was a fan of the late Tanith Lee years before I picked up an issue of The Sandman: I don't believe the latter was stolen from the former. Are there similarities? Yes, but they're superficial. If you've read both series, as I have, you'll know that the stories, settings, and characters are very different!

It's possible Gaiman was influenced by Lee's writing, and if so, I agree he should have acknowledged that. But it's also entirely possible that these two authors independently came up with similar ideas.

When it comes right down to it, I think that statements like this -- "their best work was just a rip-off of something else" -- are just another variant of "their work always sucked".

It's often an easier accusation than "they've always been crap", because, as I said, writers come up with strikingly similar concepts all the time, and it's very hard to prove you didn't steal an idea. But it has the same problems, so -- barring the kind of case you could make with a college-level plagiarism-catching program -- I think it's best avoided.

Now, telling people, "Hey, are you sad about this creator turning out to be an awful person to whom you don't want to give any more money? Try this other person's work instead!" This is good! Let's have more of it!

My friend ran into a traumatizing trouble, I'm gonna call her "A". This involves her (ex) boyfriend, I'm calling him "J".

"A" messaged me one night, she said she wanted to break-up with J but she can't or else he's gonna tell her parents that they had a relationship. Her parents are very strict to her. I called her dumbass for agreeing with a secret relationship to him, girlie didn't even think of the consequences. Told her that her parents are gonna be FURIOUS, but shit already happened. There's nothing we can do about it

On Sunday night, she messaged me again, asking questions on how contraceptives work and some pregnancy stuff. My instincts were telling me something's wrong, I asked her if he wants to do "it" with her but she kept on denying the question. Until she finally admitted that J threatened that he will f'"ck her if she ever tries to say a thing about their abusive relationship.

Yes, you heard it right. "Abusive relationship". He's been threatening her long before she told me what's happening between them. So I was like "Oh that's why your smile fades day by day when you two became together". She absolutely regret loving him.

Next day, which is Monday, I met her at school grounds. She still tries to get along with him as if nothing's going on between them. But she kept hanging out with me more so she can show me the screenshots of their conversations. To avoid suspicion, we acted natural and she still sticks to him but not closer as before (she's terrified of him now).

I told her that she should tell our class adviser what's going on, she kept on refusing because she's scared as hell. She said J will edit her face on a naked body and upload it online and drag her to the restroom and do the deed to her. I agreed to not let the adviser know to see if I can do something all by myself. I scrapped the idea of hacking and deactivating J's FB accounts because he can just make another one anyway

She showed me a ss of their convo, it went like this

J was in the class, A was absent. The audacity to show his face.

But the day after? We did it. A is now in a different section, J's left with us. The police and local social welfare department got the screenshots, he now has records. She got emotional when I secretly met with her in front of their room upstairs, I joked about banning J on their floor.

Now, we still keep in touch through socmed and in personal. This guy stalks her sometimes, creates different facebook accounts to add her but she ignores his friend requests.
