The world-famous Hagia Sophia museum in Istanbul has been turned back into a mosque.

Hagia Sophia, built 1500 years ago as the largest Christian Orthodox Cathedral during the Byzantine Empire, was converted to a mosque during the Ottoman conquest in 1453. Hagia Sophia was then converted into a museum in 1934, by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, who decreed that it should be a museum. It is a UNESCO world heritage site as well.

Turkish officials say Christian emblems, including mosaics of the Virgin Mary which adorn its soaring golden dome, will not be removed, which is a good move, as Hagia Sophia is one of the jewels of the Byzantine era that need to be preserved in its original state.

Hagia Sophia, or the Big Apple from different corners and different shades. Controversy and debate isn't new to this magnificent building. Today at the heart lies a debate on secular ethos and cultural history. But let's go back to 1453, when Sultan Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire, laid siege on the city for 55 days, and brought an end to the dwindling Byzantine empire led by Constantine II. The story of this siege is a case-study in medieval war-craft and diplomacy which I will recommend you all to give a reading to. But what's more important is the Sultan's desire to own the Big Apple. After winning Constantinople, Sultan changed it's name to Istanbul, and Hagia Sophia to a mosque. Sultan did not erase any of the Christian signs in the buildings. Back again when Turkey gained independence in 1950s, the then President (benevelont autocrat as I say) Atatyrk converted the cultural and historical symbol Hagia Sophia to a museum. Justinianus tarafından, 532-537 seneleri arasında İstanbul tarihi yarımadasında bulunan eski şehir merkezine inşa ettirilen ve bazilika planlı bir patrik katedrali olan Ayasofya 1453 senesinde İstanbul'un Osmanlılar tarafından alınmasından sonra Fatih Sultan Mehmet tarafından camiye dönüştürülmüştür. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti kurulduktan sonra Mustafa Kemal Atatürk'ün önerisi ve Bakanlar Kurulu’nun 24 Kasım 1934 tarih ve 7/1589 sayılı kararıyla müzeye çevrilen Ayasofya, geçirdiği bütün tarihi, dini ve kültürel süreçler göz önünde bulundurulduğu zaman dünya için kutsal emanet kapsamına girmektedir. Bu mekan aynı zamanda UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi içinde yer almaktadır. (UNESCO'nun Ayasofya'nın ibadete açılması hakkındaki karara yönelik yaptığı açıklamayı hikaye kısmında görebilirsiniz.) Cumhurbaşkanı Recep Tayyip Erdoğan'ın gerçekleştirdiği ulusa sesleniş sonrası Ayasofya’nın hazırlıklar tamamlanarak 24 Temmuz 2020 tarihinde ibadete açılması kararlaştırılmıştır.
