Note: For this list, I decided not to add a symbol for shows that center queerness, because in a way all of these shows do that and at the same time almost none actually do. Queer characters and their love stories are featured in every show in this list, but most of them do not address any other queer aspects of their lives and only some address the fact that they are queer at all. This is not a critique of South Korean shows, but just an observation of their current media landscape and added as context, in case you are interested in watching.

Why I think the Truck is Cheongang's Fault

With Weak Hero about to get what SEOPASS claims is the final chapter, I just need to detail why I think that the truck is Cheongang's fault.

It starts in chapter 202 when some guy (Yongsu Jang), who owns a transportation company, wants to get a loan from Cheongang. Changhui calls him out on the fact that he ran out of people to loan him money in Yeongdeungpo and that he (Yongsu Jang) wants to disappear to the Philippines with the money.

Changhui tell Yongsu that, if he does him a favour, he'll let it slide, let that man have a new start and everything, if Jang-Il transportation can pull off one job.

So, why show that scene to the reades? Yes, the guy is also the one owning the Arcade where Doyoon and Sieun fight, but why mention that "job" at all? What could be that important that Changhui would let this slide?

Changhui also mentioned before the fight by the Han River, that he plans to take care of the winning side, while they are weakened and if you look at the crowd assembled to fight Eunjang, you may have noticed a few faces familiar from the Cheongang arc. As in, people that are members of Cheongang on the Union side.

Why ware they there? Why would they bother to turn up? In my opnion they would have been there, to report to Changhui the end result of the fight and when it would be time to 'deal with the winner'.

But after the fight nothing happens. Eunjang gets to walk away, the Union disbands, Joo Seongjin gets his ass kicked, no sign of Cheongang turning up...

And then Baekjin gets hits by a truck.

So yes, I think that was a pre planned hit, arranged by Changhui.

The last question I am pondering now is the following:

If Park Humin or Yeon Sieun had won, would the truck have hit them?

(I am still hoping for later released post epilogue chapters/side stories/spin-offs... you can't tell me that Cheongang gets to continue as before when all other 'evil parties' got smacked down and the Union disbanded as well.)

[3] May be a reference to a quote/catch phrase of character Ha Mu-Yeol from the Panic Room (검은방) series, another games series by the same creator. Also what Su-Yeon literally says is "he lies like he eats meals," the implication being that the lies are frequent and regular. :P

[4] Ambiguous whether this is referring to Su-Chang or herself. I think it's Su-Chang but I could be wrong.

[5] Idiomatic, lit. translates to "eat well and live well," meaning just. Doing well; looking out for/taking care of yourself.

Drama Gossip: Jazz for Two

Han Tae Yi lost his will to live after the death of his older brother, who was a genius jazz pianist. To Tae Yi, transfer student Yoon Se Heon is truly an uninvited guest. Se Heon has been playing jazz that reminds Tae Yi of his brother since the first day he transferred to school and gets on Tae Yi’s nerves.

Se Heon also suspects that Tae Yi has a suspicious relationship with his friend Seo Do Yoon. Se Heon, who longs to play jazz freely and escape the eyes of his strict classical music professor father and Tae Yi, who wants to give up everything, was assigned to the same group for joint performance evaluation.

As they practice together, they find themselves developing complex emotions for one another. However, just as their relationship begins to deepen, Song Joo Ha, a senior student who was suspended from school, returns to school, and his presence begins to stir up things between Tae Yi and Se Heon.

Takes the Throne for Glossing Over Everything

Tell me why this show couldn't have done an hour per episode or give Jazz for Two more episodes? Is it due to budgeting? Because boy did this drama fall short thanks to how rushed it feels.

I actually enjoyed this drama. I really did. Unfortunately, I needed more.

For example, we really glossed over Doyoon and Juha's relationship. Juha saved Doyoon from some bullies. Okay, but why? Especially if dude's a bully himself too? Juha started bullying Doyoon. Okay, but why? Was it internalised homophobia? Something he was not aware he had until Doyoon made his move? That whole part where Juha practically called Doyoon disgusting was self-explanatory. However, Juha started feeling lost because Doyoon ignored his existence and he just do a 180 flip? The locker scene touched parts of my heart but Juha rationalising his previous actions was hella weak. And for Doyoon to immediately fall back into Juha's arms? Don't get me wrong, I freaking love the both of them. I just couldn't take how half-assed their story felt.

Unfortunately, the main couple's story felt glossed over at times too. Seheon's relationship with his father? The fact that his father was so strict with him yet when Seheon blew up and let it be known that he liked jazz over classical music, the father though strict, let Seheon do what he wanted. And then his father was never talked about again.

Also, Taeyi and his trauma? Or the final episode, that whole festival subplot.

Jazz for Two could have been a five-star watch if glossing over shit was not a strategy used constantly in the show...

so I saw jazz for two recently... and.... what an absolute mess of a show... good lord...

before I complain I must give credit where credit's due. the chemistry between the main leads is pretty good and it was really fun to see the contradictions in Han Taeyi's character and the balance between him grieving his brother and also trying to understand his feelings for Se Heon. i really loved the way their relationship was growing and they were really cute and enjoyable to watch. that is, until their first kiss.

now this is where things start to go a little off the rails (tw homophobia, sa, harrassment and also. spoilers)–

after this kiss Taeyi gets super confused and conflicted with the whole situation that he avoids Se Heon. fine, totally understandable and completely in line with his character. however when Se Heon shows up to Taeyi's uncle's place, he's so frustrated and angry that his literally attempts to harass Se Heon??? Se Heon looks uncomfortable asf and he asks Taeyi to stop multiple times but Taeyi doesn't even listen to him?

and see I understand that the story is trying to kind of depict homophobia and especially touch upon internalized homophobia but this scene was just. pretty disturbing and overall a really tactless way to do that. the whole ordeal left me with such am unsettling feeling in my stomach... and I just... detested Taeyi for doing what he did and I couldn't root for him or their relationship after this. also like, the way he handled the situation felt so out of character (given that he was protecting Se Heon from being touched and held that same way just a few episodes before)? idk man. the scene not only felt like a deviation from the plot, but it also really weakened Taeyi's character. we never even get to see him deal with his internalized homophobia, theres no proper apology to Se Heon or an explanation as to what actually happened and what was going through his mind at the time. all we get is a flimsy ass sorry with some eye contact and a kiss. and bam. these two get together. infact, Taeyi is so touchy with Se Heon (in a public setting like a school, mind you) while they're dating that... it was almost like he never even had any internal conflict to deal with. even the storyline regarding his grief promptly gets dropped after he gets with Se Heon and all we get is these two in a very surface level relationship

in regards to this idk if the second couple is better or worse... I am not a fan of bully romances but atleast it's established very early on in the story that the Song Juha is an asshole- so his behavior and the way he treats Doyoon feels very much in character and their arc actually kind of makes sense. we get to see the homophobia and self loathing play out, we get to see Doyoon angry at the way he was treated and stand up for himself. We get to see Juha's priorities realign and we get to see him kind of come to terms with how he actually feels. we get to see him apologize. and it's a pretty decent apology too. Not that Doyoon deserves to be in a weird hidden situationship with some guy who used to bully him and beat the shit out of him often, but hey. atleast their dynamic and character arcs feel realistic.

honestly the only reason I watched the whole show is because of Doyoon who has been added to my list of fav blorbos of all time. now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go rewatch my dating sim
