He is terrifying and let me tell you why. He is described as a monster in a person suit, despite being entirely human and psychologists can't agree on a diagnosis for him, meaning you can't blame mental illness. It's just. Who. He. Is.

He was the youngest person in his time to be admitted to medical school. He can draw from memory with astounding precision. He taught himself how to read without help. He made money from selling his art work but had to come after hours so buyers didn't know they were buying from a kid!!! That's how good he was!!! He can tell the perfume/cologne you've worn in the past. He can smell cancer.

He can do all of that while still being human, just the same as we're all human. Except he is predator and the rest of his species are prey. It's like a wolf among sheep except the wolf if also a sheep.

The man is terrifying.

here's the thing. yes hannibal is gleeful and yes will is brooding, BUT:

hannibal is a meticulous planner, a polyglot, a genius, nigh unstoppable in a fight but always opting for prep time whenever possible, the wealthy owner of a gothic-style ancestral estate; he sees himself as a manifestation of justice, is represented visually by a leathery-black animal/human creature, had a childhood defined by a family loss, maintains a secret basement, and has a flouncy, cheerful, socialite public persona

will is a nobody from nowhere - "always the new boy at school," no family, no close friends, no past where he would be remembered; he is also a genius, but his most dangerous trait as a killer is that he is chaotic, disorganized, vicious, artistic but impulsive, ruining his own carefully-laid plans on a whim; he has successfully seduced an employee of a mental hospital into killing in his name, and he is a jealous little bitch, ruled by his emotions first and foremost

my favourite thing about hannibal as a character is that he operates on fey rules. here is a creature who wants to eat you. open his mouth and you will find lacefine rows of needle-sharp teeth. he’s a ghoulish, antler-clad thing that wears human skin and dances to our tunes.

and i think you know on some level, facing him, that he wants to eat you, so aware of his appetite. but, if you follow his rules, his hospitality; if you are polite and interesting and if you say all the right things… you’re suddenly a precious thing to him. and his love is terrible, but if you have it he will do everything but eat you.

he’ll lather you in blood, he’ll drop his soul-stealing morsels into your mouth. he might even grant you a wish.

Will Graham is one of the scariest characters that has ever been introduced to television and I feel like we as a fandom don’t talk about it enough.

So yesterday I made a post talking about how Hannibal isn’t actually sadistic so that got me thinking: if I had to choose between Will wanting to kill me and Hannibal wanting to kill me what would be the better option?

And surprisingly, I actually think I’d choose Hannibal. Here’s why:

First of all, Hannibal’s plan to kill is something that can take months to years. Take Alana for example, Hannibal delayed his promise to kill her for years and potentially indefinitely. He was willing to temporarily delay her death when she offered to free him from Mason Verger and she actually even ended up alive and (mostly) well by the end of s3.

Besides I don’t think Hannibal would actively seek you out to kill you. Again take Alana as an example. Sure you wouldn’t want to cross paths with him but you could run away to a different country or at least to a different state and with a bit of luck never see him again. You should be more or less fine unless you offended him in some extraordinary way like Abel Gideon did when he claimed to be the Chesapeake Ripper.

Now on the other hand having Will want to kill you would be… yikes. If Will wanted to kill you, you would be dead and very quickly. He wouldn’t create an elaborate revenge plan. He wouldn’t delay by years until it was safe to go after you. He would kill you as soon as humanly possible. Just remember how when he got out of the BSHCI the first thing he did was go after Hannibal. Admittedly he didn’t kill Hannibal but that was for a completely different reason - you can’t hope to get the same kind of amnesty. Point is if Will wants to kill you he will take the first opportunity he gets to do so.

Next point: Bedelia said in the show a high level of cruelty requires a high degree of empathy.

Hannibal does not have a high degree of empathy. If Hannibal does end up finding you and killing you, you can at least sort of hope it would be quick and all things considered not too painful. Plus you’re probably going to end up as a pretty tableaux so that’s a nice bonus. But guess who does have a high degree of empathy: Will. Post-fall Will once he fully leaned into his dark side and took off his person suit would be much much much more sadistic than Hannibal. Even before he fully accepted that darkness inside him he was already quite cruel (Just remember all the ways he fantasised about killing/killed) and I can’t imagine by how many times that cruelty would be multiplied post fall.

Here’s just some examples:

1. Feeding Hannibal to pigs alive.

2. Have a stag pull at a rope around Hannibal’s neck to choke him to death slowly:

3. Drop a shotgun (which would offer a quick and relatively painless death) and instead proceed to beat the shit out of Randall Tier (while imagining Hannibal) and then snap his neck.

4. Set Chilton up to be attacked by a famously ruthless and cruel murderer who he knows could and would make Chilton suffer.

So in short if Will wanted to kill you it would be soon and it would be painful.

So at least for me I’d definitely prefer Hannibal’s delayed long winded planned out artistic poetic revenge over whatever the fuck Will has going on. That man is scarier than Hannibal.
