“okay, promise you won’t get mad at me?” mingi holds out a pinky to your blindfolded figure, and you’re left in confusion when you feel his pinky finger grazing your hand. you furrow your eyebrows. “why would i get mad at you, love?”

“just promise!” he urges you, and you hold your hands up in the air before letting out an ‘okay!’ and hooking your pinky with his, promising that you wouldn’t get mad over whatever he had planned.

“you’re not crossing your fingers or anything, right-”

“mingi get on with it!” you push him, growing impatient as you both stood outside your apartment door, ready to go in and just ring in your birthday while you're in bed, peacefully cuddled up in your sheets and sleeping.

mingi holds you back from entering your home last minute as he whispers in your ear. “just to let you know that although i am your boyfriend, this was all wooyoung’s idea-”

“YOU TOOK AN IDEA FROM WOOYOUNG?!?!” you exclaim, now dreading what state your apartment is in. you step backwards as you stumble a little, the black blindfold still restricting you from seeing anything around you, making mingi hold you tightly in his arms as he grows nervous.

“listen, we wanted it to be a surprise…” mingi trails off, then clears his throat. “let’s just go in, yeah? and then you’ll see the surprise!” he smiles brightly, trying to keep any evidence of stress or nervousness evident on his face.

you both soon walk into your shared apartment, and you take off your blindfold to be met with about an army’s worth of mingi cutouts all facing you, staring you down as you stare back at them with shock. you couldn’t even count up to 20 before losing track, and you feel all the colourful words come up into your mouth. turning towards him, mingi grins sheepishly at you before bolting out the door, whipping open the door to the staircase as you chase after him.

“SONG MINGI!” you scream, running up the stairs and following him into a random open apartment as he screams bloody murder, throwing his arms up in the air as he waves them around.

before you can register where you even were at the moment, the lights flash on and screams erupt all around you as cameras are pointing towards you.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY Y/N!!!!”

you pull your phone to check the time, and shining right back at your face were the numbers 00:00, indicating that it indeed was your birthday.

you start to thank everyone as they wished you happy birthday, some people giving you pats on the back while others were screaming in your face and lightly giving you birthday beats. as you talk to everyone, you can’t help but look for a particularly tall, silver-haired man who might be lurking amongst the crowd, hiding himself from your wrath, when you spot him in the hallways towards the bedroom.

mingi doesn’t even notice you marching over to him before he yelps out as he’s dragged into a bedroom.

“did you plan this?” you ask him, crossing your arms as you look up at him.

“YOU SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME!” he shrieks, holding his chest as he breaths heavily. you slap his arms as he flinches, putting his arms down. “well?”

“...yes.” he hangs his head down.

you fake a scowl before giving in and going in for a hug, taking mingi by surprise as he slowly hugs back.

“thank you.” you whisper to him, pinching his side playfully.

“AH- oh uh, you're welcome, baby.” he breathily laughs, flinching as he wraps his arms around you in a warm embrace, rubbing your shoulders in endearment.

you both stay silent before you interrupt the silence.

“now where’s wooyoung?”

Happy Birdday To Me!

For my birthday today, I took the day off work and spent over two hours birdwatching at a hotspot I had not been to before, though it's not that far away. Long report below!

(I hate driving on the freeway, particularly the one I would've had to take to get to Arrowhead Marsh. But I figured out that I could get there on public transit instead.)

Various rare bird sightings have occurred there in the past week, so I was hoping to see something new. In the end, I only saw one of the rarities, but I did see 7 birds I'd never seen before!

My dad joined me after about 45 minutes, but even before that, there were a number of Very Serious Birders with serious equipment. None of them had seen (today) the Nelson's sparrow or tufted duck that have been there the past few days (though according to the rare bird alerts, a few people had seen the sparrow in the morning), but they did help me with some IDs and point a few birds out and let me look through their spotting scopes!

Seven new species:

Common yellowthroat. This is probably the one I was most excited about, even though it isn't very unusual--but I had never seen it! and it's yellow!

Sora. Also very exciting with its pretty plumage and yellow beak! It was shy, but I got a good look at it a few times when it foraged at the edge of some reeds.

White-winged scoter. This was the only rare one that I saw, and it was pointed out by some of the Very Serious Birders, who let me look at it through their scope and regretted that they had not pointed it out to me while it was preening and showing its white wing patches. I could see a tiny white line on the wing, and the bill was very scoter-y, but it would look to a casual viewer like a pretty solid dark brown duck.

Blue-winged teals. Very beautiful bird. There were 3 of them--two males and a female--paddling around, and I could see a small light blue spot on the folded wing of one of the males. It's a large blue patch in flight, but not always visible when they're swimming.

Cinnamon teals. Another beautiful bird! We saw a pair.

Horned grebe. The horned and eared grebes are similar-looking and hard to distinguish, but in this case, I saw both (and was told both were there), so I managed to pick out the differences. (I had seen an eared grebe on the Elkhorn Slough boat tour, identified by someone else.)

Glaucous-winged gull. I would never have even tried to identify this one, but was told what it was.

I also "collected" a whole trifecta of teals, because someone also pointed out a green-winged teal (I'd seen one before). I was happy to see a pied-billed grebe (definitely the cutest of the grebes we get around here). On the walk from the bus stop I saw what I believe was a red-shouldered hawk perched on a utility pole. It had the orange barred front, but the back looked less black-and-white than brown-and-white. There were lots of scaups in the water, but I couldn't tell if they were greater or lesser; we also saw what was probably a greater yellowlegs, but of course could have been lesser. I saw some coots, common goldeneyes, black-necked stilts, snowy egrets, a great blue heron, loads of willets and marbled godwits, and a couple of black turnstones, but I'm sure there were lots of other ducks and shorebirds I didn't manage to identify.

All in all, it felt like a very successful birthday birding expedition, and it made me want to go back.

Because apparently I am my feeling things hours, what h/c can you give me about the Reggie is the one that survives AU?

-When Reggie gets back into music, he picks up the banjo first, since it's the only instrument he never really played with the guys.

-Rose and Victoria have a lot of fun trying to slowly help Reggie into tolerating spice.

-At one point Hazel threatened Rose that if she didn't make Reggie a Molina soon, she was going to adopt him as her little brother and he'd be a Morgan.

-Yes Ray and Reggie both took Rose's last name.

-Reggie did stick with Peters for his artist's name though, both to honour who he'd been with the boys, and because he didn't want to like, appropriate anything. He didn’t want some label to try and score diversity points with his last name when he is The Whitest White Boy.

-They know Julie and Carlos are biologically Ray's because Reggie just... couldn't continue his bloodline when the guys would never be able to. He made a lot of excuses like shitty genetics and 'Ray's way hotter and you'd make pretty kids together', but eventually he probably took them to his therapist and said that while he loved the idea of being dad, he just really could not handle being a biological one.

-Julie was adamant about wanting to learn the fiddle so she could play country with her dad and Reggie sat through like a year full of torture of Small Child Learning Violin with a smile on his face because THAT'S HIS BABY.

-Reggie is Dad, Ray is Papi. Except when Julie was just learning to make sounds and Reggie insisted that 'ababababa' was his name because that's the first babble she mastered.

-Julie and Carlos both have their own teeny tiny cowboy hat and boots from when they were babies. Also teeny tiny plaid shirts.

-Every year on Luke's birthday Reggie visits Emily and Mitch Patterson. He gave them the song the first year. They didn't ask him to play it until like five or six years later, and of course they were all crying at the end of that.

-He does the same for Bobby's Lola, but he visits her more often. He tried visiting the Mercers a few times but was just met with cold politeness and like, obligation and after like two years he gave up. Instead he visits Alex' favourite queer-friendly bookstore and buys a few books he thinks Alex would have liked and donates them to shelters or stuffs them in Little Free Libraries.

-Reggie's birthdays are very hard on him, but Rose and Ray try to remind him he's special and loved and they're happy he's here. It gets a little easier when the kids are born because like, what kind of monster do you think he is, depriving his children of an excuse for cake? If Carlos made him a paper crown he is gonna wear a paper crown. He will cry still a little, but it’s because they made him a homemade banner that says Hapy Birdday Daddy!
