As summer comes to a close in this new country, I am reflecting on what I am grateful for and what I would like to do differently when this season comes around again. I will sleep less and spend more time exploring the sea. I will spend less time as a recluse. I will put myself out into the world and foster connection. I hope to be able to play the harp for an audience by then. I will study and practice this art through the fall and winter. I will work harder at learning this beautiful language during that time as well. Cheers to a rich life where I find wealth in the whimsy of it all ✨

Alfred Stevens (Belgian, 1823 - 1906) • Portrait of Catherine Vivier-Stevens (the artist's wife) • 1869 • Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Gallery card at Harvard Museum:
Stevens was best known for his finely detailed representations of the domestic life of haute-bourgeois French women. In particular, he excelled at the depiction of rich fabrics and interiors. The harpist here is Stevens’s wife, Marie, who has just finished playing, a congratulatory bouquet in hand. The pensive musician is echoed by the bronze statue of a lute player behind her. The statue is one of many versions of a popular sculpture by Paul Dubois, A Florentine Singer from the Fifteenth Century, 1865, which was available in several sizes. The French aesthete and poet Robert de Montesquiou dedicated his poem Une Musicienne (A Musician) to both Stevens and this painting. The poem’s first stanza can be roughly translated as: "Admirable painting by Stevens: a woman, Both strong, and pensive, seated, holding her breath To hear in her heart, the quivering and clamoring beat of the suspended melody, about to end."

The disparity between like environmental aesthetics for treatment of different disease is wild. Cancer floors are like “welcome to our Swiss hotel, we have a family lounge, we have grand piano in the foyer, harpists come once a week, and our nurses are so beautiful, so elegant, so full of life” and a renal/diabetes floor is like a shag carpeted bathroom staffed only by a nurse who graduated twenty seconds ago and a battle axe named Debbie who hasn’t changed her hair or her nursing practices since the Reagan administration

I’ve been working lately. It’s been leaving me in a lot of agony due to physical disabilities and unable to have the energy to come up with content.
It’s why I’m so spotty on my blogs.
But it has been a bonus in dealing with financial stress but also actually allowing me to plan my wedding. So, I’ll be sharing some updates I’m happy about with that.
It is Lord of the Rings themed by the way! We’re trying to be less costume focused. (Not that I think there’s anything wrong with that, just my personal aesthetic!) So, aside from some cloaks for some pictures, most of the outfits are going to seem pretty normal!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s an example centre piece. The wood will be stained (meaning it’ll be glossy and darker). And it’s hard to see but there are fairy lights inside. Each centre piece will have a different necklace on top representing locations in middle earth (like a hobbit door, or a ring replica, etc).
I’m also going to be using the centre pieces to double for what the bridesmaids carry down the aisle, except they will have candles inside. (Probably led but I’m not sure?)
Our venue is booked! I’m so excited about that. Our photographer is also booked.
And I’m also using a sword replica instead of a traditional bouquet. (It’s an anduril replica for those that know the films.) there will be flowers around the sword.
We will also have a harpist playing lotr music for the ceremony. She’s been booked and is amazing!
I’m currently working on the ceremony script, with lots of references lol.
Thanks to the ideas of some followers when I looked for “you may kiss the bride” alternatives, we are going to be tying a literal knot instead.
So far, lots of other ideas and I’m excited! I’ll tag all my wedding stuff as “wedding stuff” since I’m sure I’ll post a lot more as it gets closer lol.

Mikaela Davis & Circles Around the Sun — After Sunrise (Kill Rock Stars/Jealous Butcher)
Tumblr media
The Grateful Dead cast a long shadow over this free-jamming, fusion-funk collaboration, which sprinkles sparkly harp dust over 1970s synth boogie. Harpist Mikaela Davis is likely best known for her work with Bob Weir. She has also played with Bon Iver and the Punch Brothers and made this lovely alt-country solo album. For its part, Circles Around the Sun came into being when guitarist Neal Casal needed an instrumental band to play incidental music for the Dead-celebrating Fare Thee Well concerts in 2015. Casal died in 2019; John Lee Shannon now plays guitar, while Justin Kreutzmann (son of the Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann) is on drums.
Given those extensive links, you might expect After Sunrise to lean into a hippie folk good time groove, but while the vibes are sunny, the sounds tap into Tangerine Dream-ish synth prog. “Gloaming Way” starts in pristine, pretty harp figures, a sun-dappled, folk-rooted reverie. However, it’s only about a minute before the aesthetic shifts, a 1970s boogie arising from syncopated guitar and harp, laid atop big blasts of synth. It’s a percolating mix, expertly played but resembling sitcom sound-trackery. “Moonbow” likewise dusts blurting funk with trebly harp star dust, an uneasy meld of porno-thrust and dream sequence. If you like Stanley Clarke’s gleaming, futuristic funk or Emerson Lake & Palmer’s technologically enabled arena rock, you might enjoy this. It’s a little too clean and muzaak-y for me.
The set closes with a long, live performance of “Language,” the title track from Circles Around the Sun’s fourth full-length, which gives you a sense for this band’s loose, vibe-y conjunction of disco groove and intergalactic riot. Davis’ harp careens over pop-locked syncopation, leaving cascading trails of silver on surreal washes of tone. It sure doesn’t sound like the Grateful Dead, more like an instrumental Earth Wind and Fire or “The Hustle” on a lot of acid. Not my bag, but maybe yours.

"Reader, we all know the wonders of new-book smell, but there is something about this one that smelt different to me. As I opened the covers, I became aware that I was having an aesthetic experience. Now, I’m no naïf, to go weak at the knees at mere aesthesis. The occult publishing market is well known for producing absolutely beautiful books, after all. But as I began this little book, I felt I was holding something special in this hardback. As I read and came across the reference to it as a psalter, I stopped dead.
Once, long ago, you see, I was a choirboy. Then, I held a lovely but functional psalter, and sang the Psalms. In doing so, I was taking part in a tradition which had existed for thousands of years, raising my voice to call out the words mythically attributed to David. Harpist, giant-slayer, adulterer, King and servant to his God. While modern scholarship disputes this frame, instead attributing the texts to various authors between the fifth and ninth centuries BCE, the fact remains that the Psalms are the words to the instrumental music which lifts the heart and mind, the awareness of divinity, if you like. They are poems designed to evoke and recount those things described; to call and bring them forth as recitations, but also as manifestations brought forth every time they are performed. There have been plenty of books, writings, and practices discussed in many other places about the magical uses of the Psalms – all easily discoverable by a few minutes’ focused internet search – so we shall not dive into that with both feet here. "
Hey, so the review I wrote a while back has emerged from Paralibrum's shiny new website. It's a lovely little book from Al Cummins and the tireless folks at Hadean Press. Join me as I dive into the watery nourishing depths of geomancy and Enochian poetry!
