Matthías interview on quitting Hatari - translation
Some sad news in Fréttablaðið today. The tl;dr is that Matthías is quitting the band to focus on being a father, but this is not necessarily the end of the band. Translation below the cut.
Matti quitting Hatari - trading in the leather suit for a dad sweater
[Image caption: Matthías holds his daughter Sóley on the photo on the right. He says the high point of his week is to see her dressed in this cute strawberry outfit.]
Musician, playwright and copywriter Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson has decided to leave the band Hatari which he has worked with for the past few years. He aims to concentrate on being a father but says it's impossible to quell his creative spark.
"I basically realized when I became a professional singer that I get no real joy out of singing for people," says Matthías, who recently became a father. He says the fatherhood role has changed how he prioritizes his life.
"When you have a child you start to prioritize and you just have to do what you want to do," he says. Matthías currently works as a copywriter at advertising agency Brandenburg.
"Being a father in a 9-to-5 job is my primary objective right now. Of course, writing is never too far away. I've got a movie script churning away and another theater translation as well," says Matthías, who says it was a surprise that he'd ended up as the frontman of a popular band.
"It wasn't really ever the plan to become a singer. But of course Hatari was a fantastic idea and this doesn't necessarily mean the band is breaking up," says Matthías, who says the members of the band understood his decision and Hatari's fans won't have to despair, as the band will continue.
"It's a rollercoaster that has taken me places I never imagined a person could go."
The performance took on a life of its own
Hatari has for a long time been a name nationally known by both children and adults, especially after the band represented Iceland in Eurovision, which brought them international fame.
The band, which could be classified both as a traditional band and as performance art, quickly became known for its live staging and cool costumes. Matthías says the idea of the band took on a life of its own early on.
"It was performance art that kind of lived its own independent life and went faster than anyone could imagine or control. It just happened and took on a life of its own. It seems to have just been in the right place at the right time."
Diverse influences
The band originated with Matthías and Klemens Hannigan, who also sings in the band.
"It was really Klemens who was the reason we started doing anything to begin with. He sort of ordered me to scream something into the microphone the day we got bored of playing Civilization at his house," says Matthías, but also that he was writing a lot of poetry at the time, much of which made its way into the band's songs as lyrics.
"I was writing a lot of poetry at that time, and I was in a group of young poets that were a great inspiration to me. But also the band Laibach was always behind the ear," says Matthías. That band has been widely influential across a diverse flora of bands in the so-called "industrial" genre; among others, it was a great influence on the band HAM in its time.
Wanted to deceive the audience
Another thing that directed Hatari's creativity was their goal to deceive and defy the expectations of their audience, which was an effort to refuse to let the band be pinned down as one thing and gave them a lot of creative freedom.
"We were always trying, secretly and openly, to defy the audience's expectations. When we'd been stamped as a satellite of the heavy metal scene in Iceland, we went and cut off the long hair," says Matthías. Of course, this was also part of the band's role when it participated in Eurovision.
"The audience's expectations for Eurovision are of course as they are, and we perhaps don't exactly fit like a glove there," he says.
The warm blanket of late capitalism
Matthías has worked a wide variety of jobs over the years, both as a playwright, dramaturge and lyricist, but he also recently applied for a job as the programming director of Rás 1 [Channel 1 of the Icelandic state radio broadcaster].
"It's a radio station I have a great affinity and affection for, and I've previously made a radio series called Allir deyja [Everyone Dies]," says Matthías, who first got involved with radio as a news reporter.
"I've been a host at RÚV, but I first got involved with it through the newsroom when I was a news reporter. But I have strong feelings about the cultural role that the state broadcaster serves," he says.
When asked if it's hard to satisfy his desire to create in a traditional job, he says it is complicated but inspiration can be found in many places.
"The desire to create doesn't go anywhere, and I'm reading stuff in the evening after the girl's asleep and taking Fridays off and finding little chances where I can to work on scripts and translations and other things. The playwright and screenwriter doesn't die so easily," says Matthías, who also finds inspiration in his current job. "There's also creativity in writing advertisements for random companies. It's more fun than you might think, and especially in good company like I have at Brandenburg," he says.
When asked if the frontman of the anti-capitalistic band Hatari has now fallen for good for the ideology of libertarianism and market forces, he says so.
"I'm heading into the warm blanket of late capitalism," says Matthías who looks forward to experiencing its comforts. "All I crave now is safety, stability and disposable income to take vacations. Those are all ideas that were very alien to me less than a year ago. The rhythm of my life has taken kind of a U-turn, and I don't feel like taking weeks to rock and roll abroad fits into that new rhythm. But it was a fascinating experience to do it when I did."

edit: nevermind, iceland really said "we don't want to host the contest next year" 💀

hope its alright if i make more than one suggestion after i suggested the sothe wg one, it'd be a fun one too if nailah meets volug later after hes been hanging with the dawn brigade and she sees that he has gotten fat as hell off daein cuisine.
I absolutely love Volug and I fucking adore how ridiculous he is when you translate his text absjnsjbdns. Also, Volug definitely is someone who'd get fat as and not give a about how big he is which hot
I hope you enjoy it cause I went a little crazy writing about his size since I felt was kind of lacking it recently lol
Warning: This is a fetish story!
“I know the rest of the way there,” Her words leave little room for argument. Not when dealing with the queen of Hatari, the wolf’s words and actions far more blunt than the honeyed words of beorc leaders. She neither bothers to stop or to look back at her former beorc guide as she walks deeper into what should be the complex building that is Daein Keep.
As she walks further into the massive building, the scent that Nailah follows only grows stronger. Her target not bothering to run away, or come towards her as she’d expect from her loyal subordinate, she pays little attention to her trail. The other strange change besides his seeming eagerness to avoid her is the difference in scent. A simple trail that she could follow even with her eye closed, the scent is far more fragrant; the smell carries with it an abundance of other flavors and tastes. The aromatic trail also changes often. However, the main scent of her target is always at the very center of it all. But with the base unceasingly constant, actually following it is a triviality. So she instead focuses her one good eye on her surroundings.
All manner of beorc walk throughout the keep. Each and every one of them with their own task, the individual laguz that passes by them is nothing more than a look of surprise or poorly hidden gasp by a few beorc. Yet, none even bother to stop or harass her. A hurried pace is the most action said few beorc take. “Their queen taught them better manners. Good for Micaiah,” Whispering to herself, her stoic face breaks into a small smile, the queen unable to help but feel proud of Micaiah becoming a capable leader despite her fears.
It doesn’t take long for Nailah to reach her destination, the stop a surprise to herself with her target always on the move.
“Unfortunately it seems you lost your manners, Volug,” The only thing between Nailah and her subordinate now is the door to his room. Any other possible reason for him avoiding her is completely irrelevant when she can simply fight them. Before opening the door, she cracks her knuckles. And her neck. And every other limb she can, her face hardening as she shoves open the unlocked door and nearly tears it off its hinges.
The round, portly face that stares at her with driblets of meat juice drizzling down his mouth quickly changes Nailah’s whole demeanor.
Her subject right in front of her, Nailah gets an eyeful of just how fat Volug has become.
All of Volug’s lean musculature is completely gone. His once well cared for body is blanketed by a soft, pliable mound of lard that would make any stranger unable to accept that the pile of fat eating away could ever be so fit. Volug’s abs are no more; the shown off six pack is replaced by a distended gut, so big and flabby to the point where the mass of flab sags past Volug’s knees when standing. His gut is easily the largest aspect of Volug’s obese self. The tanned mound of flab is too big for him to even reach all around with his wide, flabby arms. Always going shirtless, showing off his gut is nothing new to Volug, the laguz used to stares at glances back when he weighed 500 pounds less than he currently does. Despite having already eaten his second serving of lunch, and currently snacking away on an entree sized platter of food, his stomach still rumbles. His gut is divided into sections now, so much fat framing his stomach that his love handle juts out far enough to be noticeably wider than his upper roll of stomach fat. Volug gut has little definition to it, the mass of flab only wishing to sag and take up the room it needs. His stomach presses against his thighs and sags dangerously close to the floor—Volug only around a hundred extra pounds away from accomplishing the feat—even as Volug sits in his cushiony couch made of velvet; the couch is unfortunately broken with the sturdy furniture not made with such a fat laguz in mind, or anyone with such an obscene weight at all. The legs of the couch still manage to withstand, but the very center of the couch is cracked, the wood split into two right where Volug’s hefty poundage sits and gorges. Volug’s thighs are forced to the side by his gut that spills forward; well, they’re forced as far as they can, his legs lacking much in the way of flexibility and mobility like the rest of his large self. Even Volug’s calves are much larger from his extra weight; the girthy limbs even make his feet seem smaller, the fat squishing down and practically encasing his ankles when Volug waddles around in search of more food. His thighs ooze out on both sides of him.
Volug’s original attire already minimal in terms of fabric, he now needs far more to cover up his girth. The beige gray fabric of his fifth set of pants —all others torn apart as Volug simply grew as his gorging did—is incredibly thin. Daein well known for its more insulated materials, Volug’s clothes are made of thinner bolts of fabric to allow his massive thighs that are too wide for regular doorways some ability to breathe with Volug now being so fat that the country’s chillier climate still oftentimes leaves him warm from having to lug and carry around so much soft, warm lard. His chair crushing thighs are usually ovular from the amount of fat encasing each thick limb, but the two large thighs are pressed down like dough with him sitting. Volug’s ass suffers a similar issue as his legs. Unfortunately, his large rear is cramped against the backrest of the couch. Volug’s ass is now large enough to completely obscure an entire chair, not that any chair meant for a single person can handle his weight. His jutting backside presses against the couch. Every bit of Volug’s hefty ass is covered up by his pants. The red tarp of fabric shredded fabric that he has around his waist only barely comes past his ass with how much space it takes up now. His tail is much less fortunate, Volug’s long wolf tail is wedged in between each curvaceous cheek, the very base of it practically squished by so much lard. With how wide and how much room he occupies, the extra feature on Volug seems miniscule to the rest of him, especially with it barely being visible unless standing behind him. His ass is squished up against almost the entire width of the backrest with his ass and thighs taking up most of the room on the couch. A three seater can only comfortably fit one fat ass laguz on it. There is still a sliver of empty space on both sides of Volug, but the amount of space available is only enough for one person on each side to get stuck between the armrest and Volug’s thighs and then get smothered by the splaying flab of Volug’s gut and breasts. Volug endowed in his chest, it still holds true even as a superchub. His chest manages to hold a surprising amount of shape to them despite the amount of lard crammed into them. Both of his tits are larger than his head, the bottom curve of his two breasts grazing his sagging gut. His breasts still struggle from limited space with the rest of his body. Especially with how absolutely massive Volug’s arms are with so much fat surprisingly piling onto them. His biceps alone are larger than a beorc’s waist; the flabby barrels for arms are even comparable to the thick, sturdy frames of the larger beast laguz. The tattoos that line Volug’s arms are distended from the extra surface area that didn’t used to be there, each curve and straight line slightly bent with having to work with a larger canvas. Much like his legs’ knees, the flab of Volug’s arms sag onto his elbows, the limb far from flexible enough to do anything requiring precision. Even Volug’s forearm is large enough to be wider than even the strongest of laguz’s biceps, his arms well endowed when it comes to his girth. His wrists sink into the plush fat of his forearms. And attached to that are fat, lard filled hands that only focus on satisfying his cravings and hunger. At the very top of Volug’s corpulence is his fat, round face. Volug’s necklace easy to upsize, only extra string needed to widen it enough to fit around his circular tube for a neck. The jewelry makes it down far enough to where it rests in between his chest, the claws making up his necklace nestled in between his tits. Volug’s face is framed by his thick locks of black hair, the deeply colored, silky strands making his jowls for cheeks seem even larger as the tips of his hair brushes against the squirrel-like cheeks. And Volug’s ears rest atop his head; though the sign of his full blooded laguz self seems insignificant compared to how massively fat he’s become.
“Do you need something, Your Majesty? I’m kind of busy,” Speaking in the ancient tongue, Volug only allows himself to momentarily interrupt his gorging to speak. Though a grin smears his face along with the bit of sauces from his binging.
Nailah only continues to stare at the mound of fat in front of her. The scent clearly Volug’s, despite the addition of what she now understands is buffet amounts of food, the figure clearly Volug’s, even if his corpulence is now a far different look, and the voice clearly Volug’s, regardless of the even deeper voice that comes from such a large, hefty laguz, Nailah still digests the new information at the sight in front of her.
It takes a massive belch from Volug to break her train of thoughts; her retainer is rather content with himself—his porcine face still adorned with a grin—as he does his best to look at her despite his own massive breasts in the way along with his table crushing stomach.
“You’re lucky I keep you for your abilities and not your manners,” Nailah smiles at him, her demeanor much less scary than when she expected insubordination. “Still, what’s your excuse for avoiding me for so long?” She stretches her hands, the sharp nails briefly transition between transformed claws as she awaits her answer.
For his part, Volug’s face betrays no fear or worry at Nailah’s tone. His fat face puts on the biggest frown that he can muster—and failing at that with so much flab in the way with his puffed out jowls—and responds. “I haven’t been. Do you think I could escape you if I were trying to run away?” He pats the lowest part of his gut that he can reach, the upper bit of flab that is his throw pillow sized love handle, as if to make his point.
And it does. Nailah stares at the way Volug’s corpulence wobbles from his own actions while still seated, the thought of him even moving with some amount of haste seems ridiculous. But it does give her some ideas that she saves for further thought later on. “Every time I get close to your scent, you move around because you smell my scent. And with how fat you are now, it feels deliberate,” Nailah stands a couple feet away from Volug’s face, which is right in front of his gut, and places her foot on the very bottom folds of flab of his gut.
At the mention of her scent, Volug blushes. Surprisingly bashful, he considers his words for a few moments. “I couldn’t smell your scent. So much food around,”
Nailah whiffs the air and all she gets are the savory scentful of all the eaten meat and still remaining bits of food left. So close to everything now, the earthen, sandy scent that is Volug’s is completely unrecognizable, the distinct trail of her vassal muddled by an array of gourmet food assaulting her senses. The notion of her loyal subject intentionally avoiding her at such an obscene size becomes apparently ridiculous to Nailah. “Fine then. I’ll allow it. Besides, I only came to check up on you before I went to Serenes for Rafiel. Now tell me, how did you get so obese?” She asks the question without any sort of tact. Nailah glances at the littered plates of food, searching for any possible vegetarian dish in Volug’s immense diet.
“Good food,”
Nailah scoffs. “You’ve always been a glutton but you at least balanced how much you ate,”
The answer to Nailah’s question comes right through the door without a single knock or pause. “I brou-” Zihark shuts up as he sees himself interrupting the two. The lithe swordsman carries a tray filled with nothing but large entrees centered around meat for the obese, beef loving laguz.
Volug still greedily devours the last chunks of turkey leg despite the sudden silence. "Hu-hungry… I want…," Volug still struggles to articulate himself in the Tellius language despite spending so long in Daein now. Though the laguz puts the bare minimum of effort into practicing the language when he devotes so much of his time eating whatever he pleases. And the bit that he does learn all centers around food like the rest of his life now, Volug able to name almost all the ingredients and dishes he eats.
Zihark looks at Nailah before doing anything, able to still follow some decorum. "Forgive me, Queen Nailah, I didn't mean for Volug to get so…,"
"Fat," Nailah Finishes for Zihark. She smirks at the beorc's suddenly embarrassed demeanor, so many of the physically frailer species on such eggshells when confronted with more personal desires compared to Nailah and her laguz brethren. "Go feed him already. It's not like he has much ability to do so himself now. And your entire demeanor shows how much you want to,"
"With your permission then,"
"I'll see how much fatter you are next time I visit Daein," Nilah grabs Volug's right breast and inspects it; the meaty tit is larger than her own head as it envelops her hand.
"Goodbye, Your Majesty," Volug watches his queen leave. "Bring Rafiel with you next time," He allows himself a small chuckle before digging back into the pork ribs they Zihark gives him. The poor swordsman is unable to follow the conversation between the two laguz.
Nailah walks out with a simple wave of the back of her hand. Walking out the door, she gives a brief greeting to Nolan and Aran who also carry their own trays of food. "That explains Kisca and all the traveling," Nailah's curiosity sated, she heads over to her next destination, Serenes, to start practicing some ideas that her wonderfully obese subject has given her.
"I'll make sure you and Rafiel are surprised when you see each other next," She muses to herself as she transforms into her wolf form and rushes to go see her far too thin husband.

Maskhara - Bashar Murad
youtube
First non-related to protest Palestinian song on the list! I just like Bashar Murad, he's a funky little dude who satisfies a musical brain itch for me.
He is a Palestinian singer-songwriter from East Jerusalem. He was the first person from the West Bank to study at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and is best known for collaborating with Icelandic techno-punk band Hatari (you might remember them for raising the Palestinian flag at Eurovision in 2019, when the finals were held in Tel Aviv). Quoting a writer at the Guardian:
Israeli organisers had four hours to present their country as they so wished. Palestinians [...] apparently couldn’t even be afforded 30 seconds.
This is not that song, but you can listen to it here. Hooray, a two-fer! The song title is a bit hard to translate, but I think it more or less translates to 'zany'. English lyrics under the cut, and flashing image warning for the video.
Two steps forward, And ten steps back. I see clouds these days, Where’s the light?
The soldier approaches with a machine gun, What a terrible sight! “Going where?” He says: “Take a step back!”
My fate is out of my hands, No one understands my way of life! But in my hand is a glass of whiskey, And it still doesn’t quench me!
Pour another glass, Roll a cigarette, Maybe I’ll forget this mockery. Maybe I’ll forget this mockery, I feel like I keep going backward.
Pour another glass, Roll a cigarette, Maybe I’ll forget this mockery. Maybe I’ll forget this mockery, I feel like I keep going backward.
For two years I’ve been depressed, Down and out! Have I been cursed by the eye? Or am I imagining? Someone explain!
What’s next? What more? Where’s the sweet escape? Where am I going? My brain is tired! My patience is over
Pour another glass, Roll a cigarette, Maybe I’ll forget this mockery. Maybe I’ll forget this mockery, I feel like I keep going backward.
Maybe I'll forget Maybe I'll forget Maybe I'll forget Maybe I'll forget Maybe I'll forget Maybe I'll forget

Five Songs I'm Into Now (International Edition)
Tagged by: @riftdancing thank you lovely! I love a good excuse to discover and share music ✨
I've recently done one of these on my main blog here, so it's been great to highlight more songs that I've been vibing with of late!
This time, I've challenged myself to pick international songs since I listen to a wide variety; some of these have been long-time favourites of mine, while others are more recent. I discover a lot of new songs and genres using Radio Garden. (I highly recommend Transistor FM in Thessaloniki, Greece!)
I've also added a bonus song- my favourite from a band local to my hometown ✨
Tumblr media
1. Frío Frío Live Version - Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 & Romeo Santos
From the Dominican Republic This one is a long-time favourite of mine- I've been listening to Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 since I was ~16ish and this is my favourite song of his. This live rendition with Romeo Santos is just *chefs kiss* and the whole live album is fantastic. It's also funnier if you watch the live recording of this song and realize that the reason the crowd goes so batshit when Romeo comes out is because he pops out of of a hole in the stage, it's so wholesome
2. T'Asteri Mou - Despina Vandi & Foivos
From Greece Something I used to do when I was playing Assassin's Creed: Odyssey was listening to Greek music. Since then I've become addicted to Greek pop songs. This one popped up on the station I'd picked in Radio Garden and I fell in love. I was learning Greek a few years back now, but only remember the basics + some random phrases from Duolingo - did you know 'soup' is considered feminine in Greek??
3. Qefs Milion A - Martin Mkrtchyan
From Armenia This popped up on a random Armenian radio station while I was browsing Radio Garden, and it always makes me want to get up and dance! I have nothing interesting or informative to say here, aside from that this song slaps.
4. Invoke - T.M.Revolution
From Japan My partner and I recently watched all of Gundam SEED (my... fifth? sixth? time watching, his first) and I was reminded just how much I not only love this series but the music. Choosing which opening/ ending theme I'd include in this was a challenge! I studied Japanese from middle school right through to my first (and last) year at university. I still remember a bit, to the point of still being able to hold basic conversations/ ask basic questions.
5. Klefi / Samed (صامد) - Hatari & Bashar Murad
youtube
Icelandic & Palestinian Collaboration **warning for flashing lights in the video!** I discovered Hatari from their appearance in Eurovision in 2019 and the song they performed (Hatrið mun sigra) is a favourite of mine. This one has been on repeat more frequently now, for reasons I'm sure are obvious from the tumbnail. While in Israel for the competition, Hatari joined forces with a Palestinian artist, Bashar Murad, to create this song of resistance; the band also got a harsh response from the audience for displaying the Palestine flag during the competition's grand final. The video filmed for this song is very powerful, which is why I've added this link from YouTube instead of Spotify. I highly recommend watching it and having captions on for translation. Timestamp 2:48 is truly breathtaking. "After all this torture I'm steadfast, I won't bow down." From the rivers to the sea, Palestine will be free 🕊️
Bonus; Yoke - Teenage Joans
From Adelaide, Australia A new home grown favourite that I recently discovered, this song take me back to my emo/punk days. This song has been on repeat- in my headphones, my car and my home stereo. My poor husband and cats are probably sick of hearing it. Did you know Australians normally sing with a different accent, otherwise we sound ridiculous? Examples here: 1/2
Tumblr media
Thanks for coming on this chaotic trip with me!
Tagging: @thefreelanceangel, @ishgard, @zenmai--jikake--no--komoriuta, @ooc-tau, @nozomikei & anyone else who feels like doing this!!

Lita: Red dragon laguz. Left Goldoa because fuck their stance.

Reownha: Black dragon branded like her father, Raithyon. Adores her slightly older adoptive sister Lambda.
Rhoam: Lion laguz of Gallia. Almost as old as Caineghis, but not related to the lion king. Might be termed a knight of Gallia, to translate to Beorc ideas.
Sandalio: Knight of Crimea, fights alongside Lucia, Geoffrey, and Bastian to free Crimea of Daein during the Mad King's War.
Shanz: Isekai sent to Crimea. Meets Greil during the Mad King's War. Turned into a red dragon laguz in the crossing of worlds.
Taunch: White dragon laguz. Leaves Goldoa during the war between the Laguz Alliance and Begnion, seeking to aid the Laguz Alliance after Deghinsea grudgingly allows them passage through Goldoa.
Vair: Red dragon laguz. Was part of the platoon sent to find Princess Almedha, eluded capture by the Daeins by pretending to be a Beorc for years. Was captured shortly before the Crimean army arrived in Daein Keep and was going to be sent to Crimea to be turned into a Feral One, but he was liberated just in time.
Wulf: White dragon laguz. Left Goldoa because he always follows his sister.
Wynne: Knight of Crimea, fights alongside Lucia, Geoffrey, and Bastian to free Crimea of Daein during the Mad King's War.
Zehka: White dragon branded. He has no idea what he is, but he's a prodigy with wind magic.

Why I like Hatrið mun sigra by Hatari
Tumblr media
I’m currently in conflict with a few people in the Eurovision community (mostly on Facebook) due to one reason – I like and enjoy Hatrið mun sigra by Hatari.
youtube
I understand that everyone has different taste in music but if there is a common argument to why people don’t like this song, it’s because of either of the following:
Constant screaming – it will put people off
The message of the song – too much hate + they’re bad rolemodel
Tumblr media
It also have been revealed recently that the scores they’ve received during the national selection were somewhat near to double compared to what others have got.
There is a reason why I like the song – and no, it’s not only because it’s very different, but it’s the meaning behind the lyrics and the way it’s performed, as well as looking at the current political climate in various countries.
Who is Hatari?

Before we go to the nitty gritty, we need to know who the band members are. Hatari consists of 3 band members: Klemens Hannigan, Matthías Tryggvi Haraldson, and Einar Stéfansson. They’ve released 1 EP (Neysluvara) – which contains 4 songs, and one single (Spillingardans)
youtube
According to twitter user @leanderkills, the lead singer- Matthias, was a journalist for RÙV.
I don’t know if the journalism aspect of his career played a role in his songwriting and performance but for me, it makes sense to why the song was written the way it was.
Tumblr media
So I guess one dumb reason why I like Hatari – they’re the Icelandic version of MCR! Except rather than writing songs that help deal with mental health, they write songs that describes our corrupt society.
What is the song about?
Hatrið mun sigra is very open to interpretation. A lot of people who are against Hatari just view the song as “giant screaming fest” that promotes hate and it shouldn’t be performed on the Eurovision stage.
But I’d like to differ – I see this song as a realistic commentary on our society. A song that’s unapologetic and just says it how it is. But also saying that the incoming ‘hate and war’ is a good thing as it will unite us all – in a sense.
One of my favourite lines goes as follows:
Hatrið mun sigra (Hate will prevail) Evrópa hrynja. (Europe will crumble) Vefur lyga. (Caught in its web of lies) Rísið úr öskunni. (Rise from the ashes) Sameinuð sem eitt. (United we shall be)
I’d see this line as way of saying that the world we live in is filled with hate and corruption – HOWEVER… we will arise from the warfare that all this hate as brought and become a newer society – more united than before.
Now compare that to our current society. USA elections where it caused more division (based on my observation), Russia vs Ukraine, Palestine vs Israel…
Even in past events like the World Wars, People Power Revolution in the Philippines, and probably so many other events of rebellion/revolutions…
Our entire society is filled with hate and people uniting to put an end to it, and in doing so – creating a newer society (until the cycle repeats itself).
Hatari expresses this message in a more… extreme way – more in a way of a power balance. The ‘screaming’ represents a dictator/leader who is rallying people to join his cause. The falsetto part that’s done by Klemens represents some weird sense of ‘hope’.
Every translation I’ve found of the chorus pretty much says the same thing –
Allt sem ég sá. (All that I saw) Runnu niður tár. (Tear begin to fall) Allt sem ég gaf. (All that I gave) Eitt sinn gaf. (Once gave) Ég gaf þér allt. (I gave it all for you)
“I gave everything to you” – like they’re doing this for us. Like it’s for our own good or something around those lines. My views on that line is how after seeing the world we live in, they want to do something about it. All this conflict was all for us.
Yes, this song is not as ‘pacifist’ and may have some political undertones in them, BUT AT LEAST IT’S SUBTLE!!! But you know what song ALSO has some political undertones (and it’s very very obvious) – Ukraine 2016.

Past Icelandic Entries
Past entries in Iceland has been a rollercoaster. Some songs made it to the finals like “Coming Home”, “Is it true?”, and “No prejudice”. Some fan faves like “Hear Them Calling” were robbed to be in the final. And there were songs that… we’re not that good (IMO).
youtube
Iceland hasn’t made it to the finals since 2014 and a lot of their songs have either been constant low-key power ballads. They’re good but not enough to make it to the finals.
If Iceland wants to stand out in the contest, they need to take a risk. One of the appeals of Hatari is that they provide the ‘risk’ Iceland needs to qualify to the grand finals. They have sex-appeal, the genre post-industrial/electronic and the message of the song is contrasts to what the majority is being sent.
The reason Hatari became the fan favourite is that, out of all 10 songs that competed in Songvakeppnin – Hatari stood out from the rest. Their music reminded fans of ‘Lordi’ and ‘AWS’ but in a more twisted way.
To me, this song is ‘Occidentali’s Karma’ but darker and sinister.
“But Hatari are bad people/role models”
Please watch this video underneath and tell me again if they’re bad people.
youtube
Tumblr media
One of my Icelandic online friends have told me that Hatari is an “art group” and this whole thing is an “instalment”. They’re giant hypocrites btw! They claim to be ‘anti-capitalist’ yet they do ‘capitalistic things’.
Here’s the thing – there aren’t that many bands and artists out there that talk about the issues of society or the individual. Only a handful like My Chemical Romance and Muse were able to use their talents to appeal towards those who needed it the most or tell their views of the current situation using music.
Most songs that are shown on mainstream radio are either about love, loss, or sex. Yes, it’s a good escape but there are times I’d like to hear something different, something that’s more realistic and appealing to how I view my life. I have friends who enjoy MCR for the same reason as well – that their music reflects our current life.
Hatari does this by composing songs with darker undertones on what society has become and whether you agree to it or not, you have to admit – it does hold some sort of truth.
Hatari is the opposite of a Eurovision entry
Hatrið mun sigra is a song that not only reflects our current society but defies what Eurovision likes to promote. Yes, the idea of Eurovision was to calm the masses after World War 2 and most of the songs are either about Love and Peace (and in some cases, loss), but we can’t keep sugarcoating what our world has become.
One of the common things I’ve heard whilst I was a journalism student was the term “the media feeds the masses” – which means whatever the media gives, we the people just accept it as fact as it’s the ‘journalists’ job to tell us what’s happening in our society’. However, we are all aware of fake news and how it affects elections. According to Vox – there is this thing called the ‘October surprise’ and it’s a way to sway people on how they vote during elections
youtube
Hatari’s intension as a band is to bring to light the dark sides of our current society. That not everything is all ‘rainbows and butterflies’. Yes, it’s not the ‘ideal song’ that we want to hear in a song contest and some may see it as a ‘political entry that should be disqualified’ but it really isn’t. It’s just a reflection on what our world has become.
I love Hatari’s song because it aligns to how I’m seeing the world and the society we live in. I love my dark and edgy music (like MCR, Far Away Stables, and Muse). And the message and music style attracts my demographic – the “Woke” Generation – those who are self aware on the issues and want to fight for change.
Music is subjective. People will have their own taste.
According to the r/eurovision sub reddit, some fans have noticed that it’s a divide between the older and younger demographic in regards to their thoughts of this song. I just think that for once, Iceland is taking a risk and we finally have an entry that’s unique. And the fact that it got double the points in Songvakeppnin and the amount of love it’s been given through YouTube comments, Reddit, and Twitter – I just know that it has a chance it could make it to the finals.
Will Hatrið mun sigra win Eurovision – maybe?
But will it reach Top 10 – I sure damn hope so.
So love or hate the song – in the end… Hate will prevail. Their song holds some truth into what kind of world we live in. You can say it’s a ‘political protests’ but I believe it’s a reflection on the world we live in and that we have the power to change things.
I am glad Iceland is taking a risk and I do hope this song does very well in Tel Aviv. Love or hate the song – in the end, hate will prevail…
Before the hate wins – remember to loveMatthías Tryggvi Haraldson

Dansið eða deyið (Dance or Die) - official lyrics/translation
Since Hatari just released official clean audio for the new "Dansið eða deyið", and the video has Icelandic captions, I can actually just write up the official lyrics and translate them for once!
Official Icelandic lyrics
English translation
MATTHÍAS: Slaves! Servants of robbers! Toothless lapdogs! Parasites! Breadcrumbs! The blind and the pathetic! Consumers and degenerates! Emaciated beggars! Meaningless pawns! Puppets of vultures! Wretches! Unite, rejects, back to back and dance!
KLEMENS: We will all die, can I die with you? Before I die, I will dance with you I will dance with you
MATTHÍAS: Unveil the hand of the dark lord! Dethrone the slave-driver and give him a taste of his own medicine! Put him under the yoke! Unite, rejects, and slave away no more! Back to back and dance!
KLEMENS: We will all die, can I die with you? Before I die, I will dance with you Yeah, I will dance with you
We will all die, I want to die with you No matter what, no matter where I go We will all die, you will die with me Before I go, before I go I will dance with you
MATTHÍAS: Dance or submit to the abuse of the oppressor!
KLEMENS: Before I go, before I go
MATTHÍAS: It's now or never! Dance or die!
KLEMENS: We will all die, can I die with you?
MATTHÍAS: Dance or submit to the abuse of the oppressor!
KLEMENS: Before I die, I will dance with you
MATTHÍAS: It's now or never! Dance or die!
KLEMENS: We will all die, can I die with you?
MATTHÍAS: Dance or submit to the abuse of the oppressor!
KLEMENS: Before I go, before I go I will dance with you
Translation notes
The word I’ve translated as “degenerates”, “klámhundar”, is literally “porn-dogs”, which sounds pretty silly but it’s an established Icelandic word. Maybe “perverts” would’ve been more accurate, but I was trying very hard to maintain the merciless, angry but extremely articulate tone of the original, and degenerates just works better.
Klemens’s “I will…"s are all skal ég, as opposed to mun ég, which would also translate to "I will”. The difference is that mun ég just makes a plain statement that you will do something in the future, while the connotation of “skal ég” is, oddly, either “I resolve to…” (a declaration that you will do this) or “Sure, I will…” (implying that you’re agreeing or offering to do this for someone else). In this context, the connotation of his lines feels more like the latter - I’ll stay and dance with you before I go, rather than Before I go I WILL have a dance with you, but it's ambiguous.

'I really remember how I'd stuck the flags under my underwear and in my socks and I thought everyone had." That turned out not to be the case and Andrean had to send the singers back to their rooms to get their banners ...'

**half committed to inktober before I realised that there was problematic aspects to it this year, but there were lots of things I could do with the prompts. I overthought it a lot. So I'll post a few overthinktobers. Just the good ones.**

I love þræll as much as the next fan, but it's missing the last moan from the KEXPort recording (i think that's where it's from). The Neyslutrans recording feels a bit incomplete without it, almost the same as Spillingardans does with it's phantom "höh"

extras/comments under the cut!
overall, this is a playlist about religious trauma. roiben is a bhaalspawn, there's no two ways about it. his feelings towards it are that he can't fight destiny, and resigns himself to being an assassin in bhaal's name, albeit reluctantly. "this is all i can be," he thinks. "so i'll be the best."
king for a day - ptv
Please, won't you push me for the last time? Let's scream until there's nothing left So sick of playing, I don't want this anymore The thought of you is no fucking fun You want a martyr? I'll be one Because enough's enough, we're done
You told me think about it, well I did Now I don't wanna feel a thing anymore I'm tired of begging for the things that I want I'm over sleeping like a dog on the floor
roiben sees a lot of his relationship with bhaal mirrored in his relationship with astarion, and as such, he'll be a martyr for both of them. two birds, one stone, right? the only way that relationship is gonna end is if one kills the other. but until that happens, roiben is happy to be astarion's blunt little instrument.
knockin' on heaven's door - bob dylan
Mama put my guns in the ground I can't shoot them anymore That cold black cloud is comin' down Feels like I'm knockin' on Heaven's door
what a twisted, cynical version of heaven. heaven for a bhaalist, i imagine, would be dying bloody and screaming.
desolation row - my chemical romance (bob dylan cover)
They're selling postcards of the hanging Well, they're painting the passports brown Yeah, the beauty parlor's filled with sailors The circus is in town
the bob dylan version is more extensive but i just felt this fit the vibe of cynicism and mass destruction that roiben would cause during and after the events of the netherbrain crisis. especially with astarion. gods below.
r*** me - nirvana
i won't post any lyrics for this one, but the overall tone of it is "fine. take everything from me. you'll get it back tenfold."
the killing moon - echo and the bunnymen
Fate Up against your will Through the thick and thin He will wait until You give yourself to him
it's about bhaal. or is it about astarion? who can say for sure? roiben's head hurts.
sacred - depeche mode
Sacred, holy To put it in words, to write it down That is walking on hallowed ground But it's my duty, I'm a missionary
So here is my confession It's an obsession I'm a firm believer And a warm receiver
it's about astarion. or is it about bhaal? who can say for sure? roiben's head still hurts.
crimewave - crystal castles
Eyes lit on sharp threats from dark lips The lights press the soft skin to rough hands Eyes lit on sharp threats from dark lips The lights press the soft skin to rough hands
i have a scene in my head about the way that roiben approaches physical intimacy the same way he approaches murder. enough said.
marduk - heilung
i won't post lyrics here, but the lyrics are just all of the different names for marduk by the babylonians. i also encourage you to look at the marduk -> bel -> baal connections in ancient history. the name "marduk" translates to "lord," or "master."
engin miskunn (no mercy) - hatari
Eldur mun gleypa veröldu þína Haldreipi áttu engu að fagna Enga miskunn!
Fire will consume your entire world No lifeline to hold on to No mercy!
in the end, roiben is really in it alone. bhaal wants to use him as an instrument. so does astarion. so has everyone else in his life. the rage that must go along with that, hoo boy.
after dark - alper6nen
We're swaying; To drum beats In motion; I'm feeling My patience; Controlling The question; I won't speak We're telling; The stories Our laughter; He knows me We're leaving; We're talking You're closer; It's calming
all things considered, astarion is still the first person to show roiben an ounce of care. and under the cover of night, he can open up a little bit. a close second is shadowheart. he's never had friends before this, guys - give him a break :') also don't give mr. kitty money/streams - that's why i used this version.
join me in death - HIM
This world is a cruel place And we're here only to lose So before life tears us apart let Death bless me with you
there are only two things certain to roiben; astarion, and everything dies eventually. he loves him, but he's scared of love, he's never felt it. so it comes out this twisted broken thing as he watches the person he loves become the worst possible version of himself. roiben has to wonder, how did the two of them get here? is everything he touches destined to break?
PRAYER - HYDE
I'm crossing the borderline Without a sound A wilderness No one could ever know The sadness How it brings me down I know I have no choice
Is it wise? Taking a life?
this is specifically about the Urge. the lyrics in general kill me, it sounds so hopeless. and it is.
zetsubou billy (billy in despair) - maximum the hormone
愛 知恵比べ 緊迫 エゴの屈折サディスト 断片邪念の鉄槌 奪れゆく生命
臓器広げ懺悔 ほくそ笑む死神 因果関係なぜ?
Love, a battle of wits, tension, bending of the ego, a sadist Fragments from the hammer of an evil mind, robbing one of life Saturated with criminals, the urgent murder of a sinner Snickering gods of death, why this repercussion?
these two parts, specifically? shit, dude. more about destiny and the fight, the death, the potential repurcussions, the emptiness it leaves in the chosen vessel. you get it.
dead souls - NIN
Someone take these dreams away That point me to another day A duel of personalities That stretch all true realities
That keep calling me They keep calling me Keep on calling me They keep calling me
the urge, and also the meta associated with roiben outside of the events of the game (inside the events of the tri-soul, for example).
tear you apart - she wants revenge
It's only just a crush, it'll go away It's just like all the others it'll go away Or maybe this is danger and he just don't know You pray it all away but it continues to grow
i don't know that i have to explain this one lmfao but it's about astarion.
i don't wanna be me - type o negative
i think this one does what it says on the can!
aerials - system of a down
When you lose small mind, you free your life Aerials, so up high When you free your eyes, eternal prize
this one is the theme song for roiben embracing his urge. it was touch and go in act 2, he didn't get isobel immediately but he got her in the end.
pretty handsome awkward - the used
Your market value Your resurrection (your resurrection) Your shallow concept help yourself I hope you choke and you die I know you meant it Nice fucking disguise (so hollow) Embrace the burn You bleed just like you puke while running a mile
you know that banter line you sometimes get when you click back to Durge? it goes "Wretched thing, pull yourself together." this song reminds me of that, like an inner monologue.
dig up her bones - misfits
I have seen the demon's face I have heard of her death place I fall down on my knees in praise of the Horrible things that took her away
And death climbs up the steps one by one To give you the rose that's been burnt by her son
this gives me a very post-orin battle vibe. i think roiben would ultimately feel guilty about it but carry on dutifully regardless.
kiss the ring - my chemical romance
Move back the walls And keep the faith Don't leave a dry eye left in the back of place Is it hard To stay clean? And if you all keep believing I'll keep believing
another embracing the urge anthem, it just gets harder to push aside from here on out, and roiben's head hurts.
leviathan - leathermouth
i'm not posting lyrics because i think you really need to experience this song itself. think, inner monologue. think, losing your mind. think, bloodthirsty.
smells blood - kensuke ushio
God can't stop me, we are coming You are one of us, remember God can't stop me, we are coming You are one of us, remember
God can't stop me, we are coming You are one of us, remember God can't stop me, we are coming You are one of us, remember
I don't need God Because I'm him I don't need God Because I'm him (ah)
this song is from devilman crybaby and it plays (almost) every time that asuka/satan does something. consider the lore of the fall of lucifer here. :0
the murderer - alesana
The knife slides down to the tip of my tongue. I'm finding pleasure in watching you writhe. I lean in just to lick the sweat off your face. I taste the reverence dripping down my throat.
shuffles notes uhhh, nuff said.
terrible lie - NIN
Hey God, why are you doing this to me? Am I not living up to what I'm supposed to be? Why am I seething with this animosity? Hey God, I think you owe me a great big apology Terrible lie Hey God, I really don't know what you mean Seems like salvation comes only in our dreams I feel my hatred grow all the more extreme Hey God, can this world really be as sad as it seems?
i think this is the song that plays in the distance when roiben is standing in the wreckage of the apocalypse and is maybe, considering the weight of what his hands have done.
gimme danger - the stooges
Now, if you will be my lover I will shiver and sing But if you can be my master I will do anything
this one really has to do with helping astarion ascend, and being his right hand. is he a lover? is he a master with an iron hand? yes!
head like a hole - NIN
God Money I'll do anything for you God Money just tell me what you want me to God Money nail me up against the wall God Money don't want everything he wants it all No you can't take it No no you can't take it (You can't take that away from me) Head like a hole Black as your soul I'd rather die than give you control
regrets? maybe there are some down the line. maybe when roiben gets a little older he'll wish he hadn't caused so much destruction. maybe later if there's any wiggle room he'll resist the urge to kill.
the hills - the weeknd
I only call you when it's half-past five The only time that I'll be by your side I only love it when you touch me, not feel me When I'm fucked up, that's the real me When I'm fucked up, that's the real me, yeah
i definitely see a!a/roiben's relationship changing a lot after the events of the game. getting tired of one another emotionally, still craving that physical connection. roiben especially tiring of the theatrics and the promiscuity (i feel like a!a would be promiscuous as a power grab, but that's just my mind palace). their relationship is something that happens only in the dark of night.
came for the low - ZHU
We can be alone Push it 'til you're gone Tripping with the low I know you wanna go again
speaking of things that happen in the dark of night... their relationship is more of necessity than love after so long. it's a power struggle. very "you're the only motherfucker that can handle me (derogatory)"
hysteria - muse
'Cause I want it now I want it now Give me your heart and your soul And I'm breaking out I'm breaking out Last chance to lose control
i'm really hoping to explore these themes in a fic, so i won't say too much. maybe things eventually end for the both of them. sips drink
