god i seriously am never getting over That Scene in orv. kim dokja has so little compassion for himself that the only thing he can think to do upon being confronted with the most powerless, frightened, vulnerable version of himself is to try and murder it with his own hands. even when everyone is sobbing and begging him to stop, even when everyone has already forgiven him without reservation, even when yoo motherfucking pilgrim of the apocalypse joonghyuk cannot muster any animosity, kdj will not stop trying to convince them this trembling little boy needs to die. it had been well established by that point that kdj is self destructive and self loathing, but he was good at maintaining some emotional distance from his actions. but the moment he steps off that train, recognizes his own drawings, realizes what's happened, that impassive veneer shatters and he becomes desperate and vicious. this man hates himself so much. seriously, can you imagine how it must have felt to be oldest dream? you're an abused, lonely, depressed child. profoundly alone in this world, betrayed by everyone you've ever loved. you are so frightened of everything you can't bear to live in reality. you meet yourself from the future, but even he has no sympathy for you. no, he hates you. he hates you so much he wants to kill you. he would point a broken sword at his own throat if it meant he could erase you. you don't know what you did wrong. you never do. all you can do is cower from the monster and hope he doesn't get you.
like it's so fucked up. orv is so fucked up.

i love seeing out of context posts about long-running stories with deep lore because it's always shit like "MAJOR SPOILER WARNING!! i can't believe that the metallic athenaeum's envoy actually used never-ending dance of the 57th universe on rionne as if she's not LITERALLY the incarnate of august?!?!" it's like buddy boy thank you for the spoiler tag but all of those words are incomprehensible without at least 5 years of foreshadowed knowledge, 7 different fan theories, and 21 wiki entries

yeah pronoun circles are cringe and it feels weird to be clocked but like. Whatever. I’d rather have someone ask for my pronouns, I’m visibly trans and I’m not ashamed of that lol
I mean now that I have more sizable tits I feel a little better about people assuming she/her for me, but there’s a non zero chance I go back to they/them so whatever 🤷‍♀️

Another thing that I appreciate about TFA StarOp is the sheer comedic potential of it all. Yes from the Autobot “you’re dating WHO” side, but also from a Decepticon perspective. Like, you have Air Commander Starscream, who is considered to be one of, if not the most attractive flyer in the entire Armada. He’s like the pinnacle of Seeker aesthetics, huge wings and all that, and you hear that he’s apparently found himself someone. Oh, you think, damn, wonder who the lucky guy is, only for the news to be broken that it’s this random, tiny-ass red and blue spacebridge repair crew Autobot, in other words, just some guy. And there he is, with his arm wrapped around your Air Commander’s waist because that’s how fucking short he is. What the fuck.

I'm doing a very slow reread of orv with some friends, but since I can't talk about my spoilerous rambles with them too much I have decided to make a post here to get my thoughts out. Up to chapter 25, I've been surprised by the amount of little hints we're already getting for larger plot points and the things that are recontextualized now that I'm looking with hindsight rather than experiencing it for the first time, which really speaks to how phenomenally written orv is on a fundamental level. By the time we get to the 3rd scenario, we've had Dokja mention his mother once, when he briefly worries over her safety. Then we get this line:
"I looked around at the people. The first scenario was original sin. Thus, none of the people here were innocent. That made it more disgusting. Those who trampled on someone else to survive, who couldn’t even bear responsibility for their own life."
Of course it's firstly talking about the lack of morality in this world, when faced with the truth that between the major and minor groups of Gumho station, one fact makes them equal: they are all murderers. The use of the phrase "the original sin" caught my eye because when looking at Dokja's life, murder is his original sin- the murder of his father. That is what sparks the events leading up to this point. It is the true original sin of this world. However, that being followed by "That made it more disgusting...who couldn't even bear responsibility for their own life," is rather hypocritical in that regard. We have no way of knowing exactly how much of that night Dokja remembers at this point of the story, so there are 2 ways to interpret this in regards to his father's murder. 1) Dokja does not remember that he murdered his father, but remembers that his mother had taken responsibility for her crime and served her sentence. In regards to here the people of the minor are far inferior because they cannot adapt the way Sookyung did to their crime. 2) Dokja does remember that he murdered his father, and this disgust is equally leveled at himself, because he knows his mother is innocent but that she took responsibility from Dokja. Thus Dokja of back then is just like these people, unable to take responsibility for his crime.
Then, later on, we see the text, and Dokja specifically, focus on this particular pairing in the minor group.
"The people started to move. All in all, they were people who had already killed. “M-Mother!” “Dayoung, come here! Do this! Just like what you did on the subway with Mother!” Children and mothers."
Then in Chapter 25 we have:
"I honestly admired that the mother and child survived the bloody fight. If she had that much strength, they might be able to survive without going with us."
The English translation doesn't exactly lend itself to identifying the gender of the child, and I am miserably monolingual so I'm not sure if the original text specifies Dayoung's gender, but for thematic reasons I'm choosing to imagine them as a mother/son paring. In that regard, Dokja choosing to notice them out of everyone else, when he's an extremely apathetic person in these early chapters who doesn't care much for those not directly related to him or the story/his survival is very notable. I can't help but think he sees himself in that, as both the son of a murderer and a murderer himself. It's also notable that when complimenting the pair, he only focuses on the mother's strength. Which like. The subconscious projection is so real. To Dokja the child didn't do anything it seems, it's only because of the mother's strength that they will be able to live on. I'm sure I will be back to add more info on this as I trudge through the novel because Dokja and Sookyung's relationship makes me mentally ill all the time but for now I shall simply lay down and ponder(tm)

"I get panicky. But I make- I make promises and I will. also lie."
Unfortunately in this scenario i know and understand exactly what Amanda is talking about. Yk sometimes in social situations you just. Panic and say shit. Say you're a chef. Invite strangers to your house. And then what are you gonna do? Not follow through? ASKFJSHFB
Anyway match made in heaven for her AND her husband to be like this. Probably not great if they want to avoid these scenarios, but kind of sweet that they're similar in this way.

Hmm, now that I've actually read a different translation of Yoo Mia side story I feel way better about my own. In some places they matched almost perfectly, in some places the other person made a mistake, in some places I made a mistake they didn't, in some places the original was unclear and we both made the same editorial choices and in some places we made different ones, where I still have no idea who is right... at least now I know what's what, and that my back alley Yoo Mia side story version was actually real (I had been quietly worried it was fanfiction someone tricked me into thinking was official. But no. Now I've gotten multiple seperate sources confirming it's the real deal.)
I was afraid of accidentally inserting my own bias into the Yoo Mia side story with my fumbling attempts at editing, so I left a lot of unclear parts as they are, even if it looked bad. But, now I had the golden opportunity to double check those parts that I was unsure about, which I'm super grateful for, obviously! I see the other translator struggled in some of the same places I did.
Like, at the very beginning when Yoo Joonghyuk gets into Kang Woohyun's car and they talk. The other translators version is like this.
Tumblr media
And here is what google translate gave me when I was making my version the first time.
Tumblr media
I thought it was an obvious translation error because wtf why does he say the words twice? So this is how I edited it.
Tumblr media
But now I'm thinking maybe it was in the original too, only meant to show Kang Woohyun was repeating the words while emphasizing the sylables. So if I was editing it now, I would do it something like this.
"I still eat well."
"Just lettuce and chicken breast, right? What diet is that? You have to eat rice. Rice! And beef too."
...That's as natural sounding as I could make it, anyway.
I won't do a total side-by-side comparison of every scene, since Yoo Mia side story is more than 12k words long and I'm not that crazy. There's a lot more little things like this. I'll just point out the most important one. (I know I'm the only person who cares this much but let me nerd out for a minute okay?)
I MISSED A PAGE! My back-alley version of the original just...didn't have it, even if everything before and after was the same. Here it is.
Tumblr media
This is a totally new part that I've never seen before, but it's so real!!!
I FUCKING KNEW YOO MIA HAD A SPEECH IMPEDIMENT!!! I was actually writing a meta/theory post on it just now, it's in my drafts and everything (might still publish it if anyone's interested) since it was implied in the main story too but I don't know if a lot of people noticed. But because for some reason my Yoo Mia side story was missing the one single paragraph it was confirmed in, it was just a theory of mine. Now confirmed. Holy shit. I feel like fucking Matpat.
I don't know if anyone would be interested in me re-editing Yoo Mia side story with the missing page + fixing the errors I made the first time? I'll make a poll.
(Psssssst. If a real translator who actually knows Korean wants to give me their Yoo Mia side story version I would be eternally grateful and like. give u a free art commission or something 👀😊)

I was show only and now I’m starting book 4 and again I gotta say. Mat in the first two books is really just kind of there, like he gets cursed by dagger and he flirts with rand but he is just kind of along for the ride and THEN book 3 starts and I’m like yeah okay he’s cool and fun so I don’t understand the fandom getting mad! Recency bias indeed…
TRUTH!!! mat is basically an npc in the first couple books, and the fandom was in wide agreement that he needed an upgrade and stronger characterization early on in the show, but then got mad when it happened. (which feels like a common pattern. "the eye of the world sequence is incomprehensible in the book and the show needs to change it" but then got mad when it did. "TGH and TDR have basically the same plot structure, so the show should combine them into a single story" but then got mad when it did.)
i suspect that when a lot of these so-called mat fans say "mat sucks in the early books and the show should improve him" they actually mean "mat is whiny and useless in the early books and the show should make him a Dashing Rogue right off the bat", so then when the show improved mat in the sense of giving him added emotional complexity and angst and baggage, this subset of fans got mad because they wanted mat to be Cool, not vulnerable! but the TRUE mat girlies are delighted to see him be a sad wet kitten for a little while <3
but i feel like i saw more complaints about mat's characterization in s1 than in s2, bc i remember there were tons of "donal's mat feels way more like book mat than barney's mat" takes (which i don't agree with personally, i think they're both pretty equal in that regard, but this seemed to be the predominant take in reader spaces while s2 was airing, although, interestingly, i also saw some show-onlys complain that donal's mat felt like too much of a doofus and they preferred the edgier take with barney's mat. tho a lot of that's due to mat being edgier while dagger-cursed and doofier while normal, of course!)

because men can go to war to kill people in the name of protecting US oil interests overseas freedom and that's not considered abandoning his child and spouse, right? that's heroic and noble, that's what men do, to "provide for his family" that doesn't count as running away. totally different than a 25 yr old woman single-mothering her child with little to no support from her husband, her in-laws, and away from her own family, decides she's had enough, because caretakers fatigue doesn't matter right? because she got pregnant and married at 19 and that's the life she signed up for right?
why is it that we're so quick to forgive eddie who only became a full time father when christopher was already 5... but shannon earns the #ableist label?
and before anyone gets up in arms about it: no, i don't forgive her. i don't forgive any parent for abandoning their children under any circumstances. and i'm not denying the ableist label either, i personally don't see either of them that way, but i wont invalidate other disabled people's views on this matter (ETA: there are other examples of ableism i would use but i didnt wanna add them here bc im talking about the abandonment of it all)
i am simply treating her the same way as i treat eddie when it comes to their parenting of christopher. makes you think huh.
