Shoot anon, I deleted your ask trying to edit it.
I was asked why I didn't like HBO's Rome.
So many reasons. Mostly, I think, because despite being more accurate about the setting than many period pieces, it still felt the need to edit historical happenings/people.
It also did things with some of the historical characters I just didn't really like or feel the need for. Read on if you don't care about spoilers...
Cleopatra is a drug addict and not very clever? UGH. Ew. Solely portrayed as seductive and that's it, honestly. Caesarion is not the son of Caesar but a random soldier? The Antony/Cleopatra romance was...barely present? Actium was an afterthought? Barely anything about the battle of Alexandria where Antony almost won? Both weren't really on screen.
Both Octavias are blended into one and also have sex with Octavian. Why? Also why was Atia such a huge character? Why were she and Antony having an affair? Fulvia would have been a great addition to the show. Also where are Antony's children? Absolutely gone. Julia was also missing.
Agrippa and Octavian were not extremely close, there was no real hint of love there brotherly or otherwise, and Agrippa was in love with Octavia?
I mean there is enough drama in history without all of the changes, trust me.
So I think it is because of the potential it had, due to where it was accurate, that I became more frustrated when it wasn't. If that makes sense.
I wouldn't have finished it but it was something my mom wanted to do together to validate my interests, I think. Heh.
It did have some funny moments and some great scenes. I just overall did not care for it. Maybe you might like it, though?

Hello! I'm really interested in ancient rome and would love to watch some shows or films based on it. Not anything educational but more so entertaining so do you have any recs? What are your favorite pieces of media about this time period?
Oh this is my personal playground lol here are some:
For tv:
Rome HBO of course is a must watch
I, Claudius too is one that will come up a lot, but keep in mind that it's an old made for tv production so it's very dated in terms of production (but so influential that it's not as dated as it could've been in terms of writing - save for how sexist it is lol)
Domina SKY is very much I, Claudius: Girlboss Edition, recommend if you love awful women and awful marriages
I adore Spartacus! It's very stylized and not for everyone, but I loooove it. Recommend if you like Black Sails because it has similar themes
Britannia, Romulus and Barbarians are ones that I either haven't got around to watch or fell behind but they are worth it afiak
For movies:
Imperium: Augustus and Imperium: Nero are.... everything to me. Especially the later. Doesn't mean that they are good lol but if you love messy families as much as I do then this is it
Il Primo Re is about Romulus and Remus, it's shot entirely in latin and it's soooo good
Any movie about Cleopatra? I'm partial to the liz taylor version from 1963, but if 4-hour long old hollywood epics aren't your thing then go with the one from 1999
Speaking of old hollywood, Julius Caesar 1953, especially if you're a Shakespeare nerd. If you can get your hands on the national theatre production of Antony and Cleopatra w/ Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo, do it!!! It's my favorite
Hannibal: Rome's Worst Nightmare is a documentary I guess but it's entertaining to ME Alexander Siddig is perfect in it
Gladiator gets soo many points for "not educational but entertaining"
Agora with Rachel Weisz and Oscar Isaac!!

SIX DEGREES (or less) OF KEVIN BACON - the James Lance edition.
Kevin starred in the Fox series THE FOLLOWING alongside James Purefoy. Purefoy was in HBO's ROME with Kevin McKidd. McKidd was in the film THE ACID HOUSE with fellow Scot Michelle Gomez
Gomez starred in THE BOOK GROUP with James Lance.
Looking like a tart.
Gomez also co-produced and had a small role in SUBTERRAIN which was executive produced by her husband Jack Davenport.
More strings that bind us them.
Davenport was one of the stars of COUPLING and who else starred in that? Richard Mylan,
who had the impossible task of replacing Richard Coyle (who would much later go on to work with Michelle Gomez in THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA).
Mylan appeared in the film CITY RATS with James Lance as the guy who actually succeeds in Operation Get Chris (Lance's character) Laid.
Beyond being costars, they are friends. Richard attended Lance and Kate Quilton's wedding
and James was best man at Richard's.
Supporting Richard's theatre program.
And while Richard cheers on James' in TED LASSO
being Welsh and a Wrexham supporter he has another football show he's a fan of.
Richard was a producer of James' short film THE LEAD and James was the lead of Richard's short film THE MAC GUY.
In the short James places a call to his frequent costar Patrick Baladi.
Total aside but S1 hair > S2 hair.

I don't understand why the hell HBO Rome (or as I call it, Game of Romes, since it feels like a re-skin of Game of Thrones ngl) needs to significantly change historical events.
The show takes place during the fall of the Roman republic! AKA one of THE most interesting, densely packed 15-year periods of history to ever take place!!!!
There is shit that happened during that time that is unbelievable except for the fact that we have proof! And if you as a writer want us to be able to believe those moments, you can't just randomly change shit to make it so actually it was your special OCs who brought down the Roman Republic!!!
Special shout out to Roman Cersei AKA 'Octavian's mom but for some reason she is literally just Cersei from Game of Thrones' [edit: I have just been informed this show came out like 10 years before Game of Thrones. So I guess Cersei is actually the new Atia!]

Catch Up Tag
Tagged by the lovely @drippingmoon 🥰
I’m going to make this an open tag - please tag me if you do it though! I want to get to know my newer followers and check in with the older ones 💜
Favorite color: Pink
Currently reading: The Stray Spirit by @ashen-crest - it’s so cute guys 🥺
Last song: This Japanese metal cover of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” lmao
Last series: HBO’s Rome
Last movie: Encanto
Sweet/savory/spicy: Spicy and savory - sweet is okay but not my go-to
Currently working on: Some combination of drafting Arc 2 and editing Arc 1 of the Pathfinder story. I’m really happy with the edits so far though, I think I’ve been pretty successful at taking out all the chaff (and my goodness there’s a lot of chaff... first drafts, you know 🤣) and adding in more meaty goodness

I keep trying to edit the HBO Rome cast list to add James Purefoy's Penis (as Mark Antony's penis) to it bc I think that blesséd piece of enjoyment endowed upon him needs its own acknowledgement but IMDb won't let me and quite fucking frankly I'm tired of my contributions to the world being intercepted
