Idk if I’m completely out to lunch here, but let’s do a bit of a thought experiment.

Here we see the place Emily is wandering as new, untouched. The word LMM chooses is virgin, which I think is interesting as she clearly knows how to use it a couple chapters back to mean unmarried or more explicitly, never having had sexual relations. Up to this point, Emily has maybe sort of had a crush on Teddy but won’t admit it, but it’s still very child like. She’s adamant she won’t have a beau or get married.

Then we get this:

And directly after this we get the introduction of Dean. Now granted, I do not remember much about Dean, but what I do remember is that he’s 36, he’s interested In Emily (who is like 12??) Is possessive of her, they have some sort of relationship, and eventually asks her to marry him. We also see in this chapter a seeming awakening in Emily in regards to deans physical attractiveness (though she says she doesn’t find him handsome, she sure does focus on his particular features a lot).

So maybe I’m way off here, but her falling off the cliff seemed like a metaphor for her leaving childhood and her “virgin” state of mind and falling (literally) into young adulthood, heralded (or pushed) by Dean. Who in my opinion keeps trying to grow her up faster than she should. “Emily made a frantic attempt to scramble back but the harder she tried, the faster went the landslide, carrying her with it.”. And meanwhile, all Emily really wanted was to follow her dreams to be a writer “She must get it—she had never seen farewell-summers of so dark and rich a purple. She stepped out to reach them—” And it’s Dean she reaches out to, to help her achieve that dream, but all he really does is pull her down. “The treacherous mossy soil gave way beneath her feet”
