I have work tomorrow (unfortunately) but I wanted to talk about blue jeans for a hot second and especially Joel because god, I just love this man so much.

This cute little story brings me so much happiness. I love writing this version of Joel. The devoted dad, albeit a little goofy and shy at times. He is so sweet. He is so thoughtful, caring, and I just know this man pays attention to all the little details. He’s a little rough around the edges, much like his post outbreak self but for different reasons. We don’t know much about Joel’s early life or Sarah’s mom, and him having Sarah at a young age and how that affected him.

Joel has his moments of vulnerability that I think are SO important to highlight because I often feel like in todays society, men are still frowned upon for having feelings. For expressing emotion, and letting their vulnerabilities show. Joel has a safe space to express his feelings and I just love seeing him become more and more open with the reader.

I also love being able to incorporate Tommy into this story more because what we see of the two Miller brothers before the outbreak is just a glimpse into their relationship. I imagine these two have gotten into heeps of trouble together. Tommy is certainly a massive flirt, and far more of an extrovert than Joel is, but there’s so much love between them. Tommy loves Joel so much and just wants to see him happy. I still think back to their conversation in chapter 8 and it was one of my favorite parts just to write their dynamic together.

Joel is starting to get more and more comfortable with showing affection. Chapter 9 is a super big turning point for him because he lets his guard down more. Despite the fact that he’s feeling bashful over Tommy and Sarah teasing him over the reader spending the night, he’s feeling so happy inside and he’s not afraid to show it.

I just love the fact that both pre! Outbreak Joel and post! Outbreak Joel have so much love to give. They each do it in their own way. One thing is for certain, they care so deeply for the ones that are closest to them. ♡

but when he's alone... oh god, when he's alone. he dreams of a love that he can drown in. of a love like the ocean, vast and cosmic, something that pulls him in and under and doesn't allow him up for air; invades every single one of his senses. he thinks of it before he falls asleep and it makes him ache. it makes him weep. he knows that he has so much love to give if he just got the opportunity. but he's never had that, he will never have that. he can't have that. so he bails the love out of his body like he's a boat with a hole in it because he knows that if he allows it to stay, the hope will kill him.

"love isn't real," eddie says because it hasn't been. not for him. not really. he's never quite seen it like how he's dreamed about, he's never quite felt it like how he's dreamed about. and he so desperately wants to believe that it isn't real, because if it is real then it means that it just hasn't been real for him.

Saying I love you for Clive has varied through the years. When he was younger, it was easy to say to his father, but most importantly to his brother. There was never a moment Clive didn't remind Joshua how much he loved him. It was a joy to remind him. Through the years as a branded, all love was shut out expect for his brother.

All he could think at the time was how the love of his brother was keeping him strong as he missed him terribly. Once free from the imprisonment of being a solider, Clive was welcomed in as part of the family in the hideaway. As well as meeting with ties from his past, Jill and Joshua, Clive heart slowly started to fill with love. It was hard to express love so openly. With less people around, Clive didn't shy from telling those close to him he loved them dearly.

When it's someone he is in love with, he doesn't shy away from it. He showers them with love everyday and will say it in front of everyone with no hesitation.

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
