Part THREE of my A Court of Silver Flames reread commentary that absolutely no one asked for.
--Is there a ship name for Mor/Emerie? Even though it's based entirely on Emerie saying she forgot how beautiful Mor is and blushing? Because I ship it.
-- Gwyn having them written into Merril's book about the Valkyries. So SWEET!! "Our stories are worth telling." Damn straight.
-- Nesta facing her fear with the fire. That's my girl.
-- the House showed her its heart!!!
-- kinda fuckin rude of Rhys to give the dagger Nesta Made to Eris. Even if she doesn't want it, it should be Nesta's to give away.
-- I need Nesta, Aelin, and Bryce to form a dance troupe.
-- Eris tells Nesta that what happened between him and Mor after she was savaged didn't go down the way Mor says. He's implied this a few times. I need to know!!! What happened!? Her gift is truth, why would she lie about that?

The Inner Court, your sisters, your possible son would be devastated by one death and you bargained to make it a DOUBLE funeral for them. How nice. If Nyx loses a dad, oh no, guess what, he's an ORPHAN. Also, Rhys is waaaaay older than Feyre and would die before her naturally, so this bargin drastically shortens Feyre's lifespan. 'Oh, she doesn't want to live without him.' That's fucking life, isn't it? The people we love the most die on us, and our world falls apart, and then guess what? We keep fucking going.

-- And thus, my beloved Nesta gets nerfed. WHY must the female protagonist sacrifice her power in order to save the day? Why can't she stay overpowered like Rhys? Like Feyre? It's clear in HOFAS that Nesta still has some power but come on! WHY, SJM, FUCKING WHY!!!!!! Her power is Death, couldn't she use that to tell death to back the fuck off of her sister? Save Feyre USING her power instead of SACRIFYING IT. Ugh. It makes me so mad.
-- you SHOULD bow, Rhys. And you should treat Nesta with the utmost respect, love, and gratitude for the rest of time. But as we see in HOFAS that's not the case, IS IT? This book (and HOFAS) kind of ruins him.
-- Nyx was a goddess. Weird thing to name a boy.
-- Cassian, I am going to need you to say "I love you" back in one of the future ACOTAR books. Do you hear me, SJM, he needs to SAY IT.
-- I'm glad Nesta got the House. And finally a painting of her.
-- I am so glad that Nesta got the peace and love and friends that she deserves. But it does make me wonder why the relationships seemed so off in their cameos during HOFAS. Rhys is being a domineering prick to Nesta, so much so that Ember (beloved) feels the need to step in and defend her and mother her. And Cassian, who clearly loves her and has challenged Rhys before when he was being a dick, just stood there and let it happen. What was that??

A Court of Silver Flames (Spoiler version)

Disclaimer: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR A COURT OF SILVER FLAMES READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!! You have been warned don’t hate me if you get spoiled and that goes for the rest of the ACOTAR books too!! There is also some spoilers for the Throne of Glass series mentioned!

So I wanted to do two versions of my review so that people could avoid spoilers and so that I could also gush about parts of this book that made me feel SO many things!! There is also a lot to talk about in this book so it might be a bit long sorry in advance! To be honest it’s more of a discussion than a review!
First of all, I loved this book. I did not expect to because I didn’t particularly like Nestas character, I felt like she was kind of mean to everyone for no reason and was just plain rude. However, after reading this book I can definitely say I like her a lot more now but maybe not as much as I was hoping. This was mostly because even though I loved all of the new found friendships and found family stuff that was going on with Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie but I couldn’t help but feel like she could have directed that towards Feyre and Elain (and even Amren) instead. Nesta kept complaining that Amren and Elain had chosen Feyre over her but then didn’t really do much to try and make up for all the stuff she’d said and done to her sisters. However this was probably because Nesta was saying that it felt good to become friends with these girls because they knew nothing about her and so would not judge her for the things she had done in the past so I can accept that, but it did annoy me a little. I’ll come back to that thought later because I want to go through some of the notes I made while reading.
The first thing I noted was that I loved the dynamic between Cassian and Nesta. I loved how in the beginning of the book, Cassian was genuinely so nervous to go and get Nesta from her home and take her to Feyre. Like this big bad ass general was shaking just to go to her house and I loved that. I loved the sheer power that Nesta held even before they discovered that her power was death itself. I also loved all of the pining and sexual tension that was between these two I mean they were both horny as anything for each other and I did not expect SO MANY sexy scenes between then but I am not complaining about that. I am however complaining about the fact that this book practically confirmed that the original threesome scene was going to be between Nesta, Cassian and Azriel (we were truly robbed) as Nesta had some dirty thoughts about being in between the two males.
The next thing that I noted was after Nesta had begun working in the library. I was trying to keep a keen eye out for any links to Throne of Glass and Crescent City as sjm had confirmed that they were all interlinked in some way. When Nesta was helping Gwyn with the books for Merrill, Gwyn said that Merrill was once researching the theories of different worlds and dimensions I originally had thought that this was a nod to the tog and cc worlds but after Nesta found the harp and discovered that it had 26 strings for the 26 dimensions theorised by Merrill’s research I wasn’t so sure but it was interesting to think about. Also, linking to this point, I wondered if the falling red star that was pointed out toward the end of the book was a nod to the part in Kingdom of Ash when Aelin is going through all of the worlds and sees Rhysand and Feyre on a hill. I could have been clutching at straws here but Feyre was definitely pregnant in that scene so it could have been. Lastly on the point of all the books being linked, I wondered if the symbols that were found in the prison and in the archway later on in the book were Wyrdmarks from the tog universe. It would make sense as they formed a barrier that only Nesta could pass through as she was cauldron made and we think Aelin has something to do with the cauldron and no one knew what they symbols meant?
The next thing I wanted to talk about was Nesta’s newfound friends Gwyn and Emerie. I love these girls they are so strong and badass and I loved the idea of Nesta wanting to train up some more of the females from the library to defend themselves. I also reveled in the idea of them training to become Valkyries and cutting the ribbon, going through all the courses and then the blood rite together. There was certainly enough female empowerment in this book to keep me satisfied. I also had to have a wonder if Gwyn is to become Azriel’s new love interest and if Emerie is to become Morrigan’s? I could definitely see something between these couples and I’m excited to see where it goes.
Coming back to the amount of power that Nesta holds, I loved how the plot would often come back to the part where Nesta was made a high fae in the cauldron and pointed at Hybern as a final warning to him. When she points at anyone during this book they all seem to shy away from her as if they all remeber the power she held in a single finger and I thought this was a really cool thing. I also enjoyed seeing Nesta become more and more powerful physically and mentally through all of her training. Even though parts of it could have been seen as slightly repetitive with the training and the 10,000 stairs, it still held my attention throughout and I was rooting for Nesta to become stronger and make it down the stairs! (Also she stabbed an Illyrian warrior in the balls during the blood rite and I thoroughly enjoyed that)
The last point about Nesta and Cassian I wanted to touch on was them finally discovering that they were mates (FINALLY!!). I mean everyone kind of guessed it already but it was definitely nice to have it confirmed. The book teased it at multiple points in the story but like sjm does it wasn’t confirmed until right near the end of the book and Nesta got thrown into the blood rite straight after which had me biting my nails for their relationship! I would have liked the story to further explore Cassian being under the control of Briallyn and the whole scene where she shows up and Nesta kills her felt extremely rushed. I would have preferred the book to either have cut out some other scenes to make doom for more development there or made the book longer.
Finally, relating to to other characters I was definitely not expecting Feyre to be pregnant in this book. I mean I was maybe expecting the extra Feysand chapter at the end to reveal that she was pregnant but I certainly wasn’t expecting her to be pregnant AND give birth to her son in this book. The whole pregnancy story gave me so much anxiety with how she might have died and then Nesta revealing this to her and Rhysand going apeshit over it. But of course, this is a sjm book and Nesta saves Feyre right at the last moment from not only her dying, but rhysand and the baby by giving back her powers to the cauldron (although I’m sure some of them remain). Although it was predictable and I knew that they would never really die, I still found myself sobbing at the thought that they could have. Also can we talk for a second about how cute of a name Nyx is for Feysand’s son I mean come on I’m so happy for them! My very last point I wanted to make was that Azriel was not in this book nearly enough for my liking. I was so so sure that this book was going to set up Azriel for a book of his own but now I’m not so sure, he was hardly in it and I missed him a great deal.
Overall, I think this was the quickest I’ve ever read a 750 page book. I could not put it down I absolutely loved it and despite some disappointments, it has definitely made me re discover my love for ACOTAR which I am probably going to start re reading immediately. I’m so excited to see where sjm goes with the rest of the series and I felt like this was a fitting end for Nesta and Cassian.

“O-okay” you say and the voice replies
“I am your ancestor, only I suffered a different curse than your other ancestors. I was a vampire, one of the first vampires to turn, to walk the earth as the undead. It might sound crazy but there is only one way for you to survive such a poisoning to your system and you don't have much time left” your confused
“What is it? What is this other option?” you ask and the voice says
“You need to become a vampire. A vampire wolf hybrid. There has only been one such creature before but it is the only way to return to your mates, one of whom will suffer greatly if you do not make it out of this alive”. You think through your options, there really wasn't much leading you to wanting to die, especially now that you knew that one of your mates wouldn't make it through this if you didn't survive the poisoning.
“Alright, I'll do it. Make me a vampire wolf hybrid” you agree, wanting to be with your mates. You see a glimpse of a face smiling before it disappears and the voice says
“Gladly, now Y/N look after your mates and cherish every single moment with them”. As soon as those words are spoken darkness takes over.
Tanya's POV
It had been three days, three days since the fight between the wolfs and Y/N, three days since Y/N had been poisoned by silver. You were furious, upset and hurting because your mate truly did not deserve any of this, none of you did. Poor Kachiri and Zafrina weren't doing much better than you, the three of you had truly bonded through this, fearing that you had lost your mate for good. Only Senna didn't believe it, she couldn't bring herself to give up hope, though each time you had been by her side she looked more and more pale, less like the woman you had come to know over the last couple of weeks. As each day passed, each day without Y/N by her side, Senna got more sick, her own ability to survive was being drained from her and it honestly scared you. You didn't want to loose Senna too if you were going to loose Y/N because of the damn fight. You, Zafrina and Kachiri had tried to get Senna to come for a walk with you but she refused to leave his side, so instead the three of you had remained by her side so that you could be there for the people you loved the most. You were about to get up, to go for a walk when you began to hear a whimper coming from the body lying on the bed, you look up, before looking around at the other three, all three of whom were just as shocked as you at hearing the noise, and then you looked over and saw the flutter of movement before he's sitting upright on the bed and Y/N is once again with you. His once brown eyes now a dark shade of red and you all jump to your feet, rushing to his side and wrapping him in a tight hug.
“What? How?”
“How are you here?”
“What the hell happened?” you, Zafrina and Kachiri ask Y/N. He looks up and meets all of your gazes before he says
“I had a choice to make, a choice to make it back to the four of you or die and have the world loose one of you also. I couldn't let that be the choice I made so I chose to come back, as a vampire wolf hybrid” Y/N says and you gasp
“Wait! Your a vampire now?” you ask
“Yeah, it was the only way I could come back to my four loves” he admits and you nod
“Well, I'm glad you chose that option” Senna says as she places a kiss on Y/N's lips, he's a little taken aback by the gesture but he quickly returns it and you smile. As you look at Senna you notice something and gasp. The others all turn to you and raise an eyebrow
“What is it Tanya?” they ask and you point to Senna
“She's looking like her normal self, she doesn't look quite so sickly anymore” you explain and Zafrina and Kachiri look at Senna before nodding, agreeing with you before you notice the frown on Y/N's face
“I'm guessing from what you said and how sickly Senna was when you were unconscious that Senna was going to the one to loose her life, she is the closest one to you out of the four of us after all” you summarize and they all think about it before nodding their heads
“It sounds about right” Y/N says and you nod. You place a kiss on his forehead
“Well I'm glad your okay, it will be nice to have you with us for a lot longer mate” you say and he looks up at you and smiles.
“Sounds like a promise, Tanya” he says and you can't help but chuckle as you walk out of the room to tell the others that he's okay.

These goddamn chapters are so long I want to d ie
The Queen of the Fae was exactly as Aelin remembered. Swirling dark robes, a beautiful pale face beneath onyx hair, red lips set in a faint smile
Of course Maeve is also drop dead gorgeous. Somebody gotta put a cap on the amount of beauty in SJM’s novels, it’s becoming too much.
With [Maeve’s] attention elsewhere, Lorcan took up a place at Aelin’s side—as if they were somehow allies in this, would fight back-to-back. Aelin didn’t bother to say anything to him.
I mean, Lorcan being on your side gives you a much better chance of rescuing Elide, but sure Alien, be like that.
That ripple of Lorcan’s power the day Ansel’s fleet had closed in … [Aelin]’d known it was a summoning. The same way she’d summoned the Valg to Skull’s Bay. She’d refused to immediately explain Ansel’s presence, wanting to enjoy the surprise of it, and he had summoned Maeve’s armada to take on what he’d believed to be an enemy fleet. To save Elide.
This seems kinda weird to me? Elide has stated to Lorcan numerous times that she’s on Alien’s side, so wouldn’t Maeve consider her a threat and an enemy? Why would Lorcan summon her to save Elide, then? But whatever, the less time we dwell on shitty writing, the quicker we get this shitshow over with.
Elide was trembling; every bone, every pore was trembling
Every pore??? Lmfao is SJM just giving up at this point?? She can’t shoehorn in sexual references when her protag is confronting the villain so she wants to just get it over with.
Lorcan betrays them and Alien is shocked, but like... why are y’all surprised Lorcan was literally only with you guys for Elide, he has no reason to like anyone else in Alien’s group of jackasses.
Flame danced at Aelin’s fingertips. No. Her magic had been emptied, still hovered near burnout.
Maeve kick her ass please I am begging you, wipe the fucking floor with her
Maeve returned Aelin’s smile. “(...)Of course, the fools didn’t realize that when you had drained yourself on their armies, I’d be waiting. You were already exhausted after putting out the fires I had my armada ignite to tire you on Eyllwe’s coast. It was a convenience that Lorcan gave your precise location and saved me the energy of tracking you down myself.” A trap. An enormous, wicked trap. To drain Aelin’s power over days— weeks.
Alien’s tiny mind is fucking blown by this but no fucking shit!!! You’re a dumbass who thinks wasting her magic on shooting fireworks out of her ass is a good idea, of course someone would notice and take advantage of you!! Does Alien even have a goddamn brain???
“The armada was a precaution. Just in case the ilken didn’t arrive for you to wholly drain yourself … I figured a few hundred ships would make for good kindling until I was ready.” To sacrifice [Maeve’s] own fleet—or part of it—to gain one prize … This was madness. The queen was utterly insane.
I mean. Maeve is an evil bloodthirsty monster, but she’s way smarter than any of these dumbasses. Honestly, I’m starting to root for her. She figured out her enemy’s weakness and used it against them, which is more brain power than Alien is capable of.
Flame slammed outward, red and golden—just as a wall of darkness lashed for Aelin. The impact shook the world. Even Manon was thrown on her ass.
Love how SJM tries to make this showdown all ~epic and uhmayzing~ but then throws in Manon falling flat on her ass. The rivalry between Maeve and Alien is barely developed so I’m hardly excited for Maeve to kick Alien’s ass. Makes me wish I could be reading Death Note instead, now there’s a good power play between rival characters.
Lorcan grabs Elide while Maeve and Alien duke it out and he tries to get her to run.

Going to the mat? Wtf??? Yes I know it’s an expression of struggling/fighting until defeated or victorious, but this completely threw me out of the story when I read it. This is a (supposedly) medieval setting, and this saying just seems out of place in this setting.
A whip of black sliced into Aelin. She went down. And Elide thought the impact of Aelin Galathynius’s knees hitting the sand might have been the most horrible sound she’d ever heard.
Elide was literally enslaved in a tower and abused by her uncle but seeing some stupid queen she barely knows getting the shit kicked out of her is the worst thing she’s ever witnessed. Okay, SJM, okay. Elide deserves so much better than to be reduced to a fangirl to splooge over Alien.
Aelin crawled backward, blood sliding from her right nostril. Dripping on her white shirt.
*clenches fist* fragmentsssssss. A comma or the word and would’ve sufficed better there.
Aelin tried to rise. Tried, but her legs had given out. The Queen of Terrasen panted, fire flickering like dying embers around her.
I’ll admit, I rather like the symbolism of the embers dying out around her, highlighting how she’s utterly failed and gotten her ass whooped. Very nice.
Fenrys and Gav roll up to the party while Maeve continues to beat Alien. I know it’s cruel to say, but I’m rather enjoying Alien getting her arrogant ass whooped after unfairly winning literally every confrontation with no effort in this novel.
But Maeve let the darkness around Aelin part. She was curled on her side, bleeding from both nostrils now, more blood dribbling from her panting mouth.
Considering she’s getting whipped and stabbed by black magic, I think she should be bleeding from actual wounds than having just a nosebleed lmao. Maeve starts grilling Gav.
“Did I or did I not tell you to execute Lorcan on sight?” “There were … circumstances that prevented it from happening. We tried.” “Yet you failed. Am I not supposed to discipline my blood-bonded who fail me?” Gavriel lowered his head. “Of course—we will accept it. And I will also take on the punishment you intended for Aelin Galathynius.”
NOOOOO I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD SJM IF YOU KILL OFF GAV FOR ALIEN TO LIVE I WILL FUCKING FIGHT YOU
So Maeve kicks Gav out of her court and dishonors him, but he lives, thank god. If Gav ends up dying in this series I’m gonna have to have a long angry chat with SJM. Gav basically disappears for the rest of the scene even though he’s right there? Whatever spares him from the agony of this shitty book I guess.
Elide splooges about what a badass assassin Alien was and how she’ll wait for the right moment to strike, before Maeve removes all of Alien’s weapons for that exact reason. My sides hurt from the fucking cackling I did at that. Can’t believe I am about to stan Maeve, but she’s a ruthless, badass, calculating villain who is capable of thinking about things other than sex. Nothing but respect for my evil queen.
“What a powerhouse you two would be—[Aelin] and Prince Rowan. And any offspring of that union …” A vicious smirk. “You and Rowan could rule this continent if you wished. But your children … your children would be powerful enough to rule an empire that could sweep the world.”
Ungh, c’mon Maeve, I know you’re just fucking with Alien, but don’t make me read that garbage. Can’t wait until there’s a sequel series to Thr0ne of glass about Alien’s goblin kids being even more uber powered special snowflakes than their mother. C’mon, you know SJM would.
“It was so easy to tug on the right psychic thread that day Rowan saw Lyria at the market. To shove him down that other path, to trick those instincts. A slight altering of fate.” (...) Maeve said, “So your mate was given to another. And I let him fall in love, let him get her [pregnant]. And then I broke him. No one ever asked how those enemy forces came to pass by his mountain home.”
Great, so Lyria was nothing but a plot point to get Ratlin together now? Fuck off SJM, stop reducing your other characters as nothing but plot points for your precious OTP. Lyria deserved so much better than this.
“[Rowan] took the blood oath without question. And I knew that whenever you were born, whenever you’d come of age … I’d ensure that your paths crossed, and you’d take one look at each other and I’d have you by the throat. Anything I asked for, you’d give to me. Even the keys. For your mate, you could do no less. You almost did that day in Doranelle.”
Lmfao I love how one of the main selling points fans use for this series were “it depicts love accurately, Alien has more than one love interest!1″ and SJM fucking killed any chance of using that as a positive of the series hahahahaha I am actually fucking dying. Chaol, Dorito, and Sam didn’t mean shit because her one true love was Rowboat all long. Couldn’t have written a shittier plot twist if I tried, SJM, hats off to you. That deserves a slow clap.
Maeve ignored [Elide pleading]. “Well? When did you know [Rowan was her mate]?” “At Temis’s temple,” Aelin admitted, glancing to Manon. “The moment the arrow went through his shoulder. Months ago.”
Nothing turns me on more than my abusive boyfriend almost dying by an arrow to the shoulder. I know, I know, the mating bond in AC0TAR is different than the ones in T0G, but still.
Maeve shrugged. “If it’s any consolation, Aelin, you would have had a thousand years with Prince Rowan. Longer.”
Go tf off, Maeve!!!! I’d read an entire book of Maeve just ripping Alien a new one tbh
Turns out Alien is due to Settle in five years or so. What a relief, SJM’s precious Mary Sue won’t ever have to grow, god forbid, old and ugly! Phew, really dodged a bullet there!
Maeve calls out Cairn, the asshole dude Lorcan brought up many chapters prior.
A handsome, brown-haired warrior walked toward them from the cluster of escorts. Handsome, if it weren’t for the sadistic cruelty singing in his blue eyes.
So is he handsome or not, SJM? These two sentences are so contradictory. Maeve gives Alien a choice whether to come willingly or to refuse and let Elide be dragged along. Alien is a selfish shitlord, but she cares about Elide despite barely knowing her, so we all know which she’ll probably choose.
Next chapter, finally, holy shit that one was so long I had to skim most of it.
Aelin’s body hurt. Everything hurt. Her blood, her breath, her bones. There was no magic left. Nothing left to save her.
It’s funny how this is framed as we’re supposed to feel bad for poor Alien but I’m laughing my ass off. Act like a little shit, get hit, Alien.
Aelin simply nodded at the Fae Queen. Her acceptance and surrender.
Surprise, surprise. I’ll at least give Alien a little credit for considering the safety of somebody else besides herself or Rowboat’s Fae peen. Man, the bar is set pretty low, eh?
And because she had won, Maeve even loosened her power’s grip on Aelin’s bones. Allowed Aelin to turn to Elide and say, “Go with Manon. She will take care of you.” Elide began crying, shoving away from Lorcan. “I’ll go with you, I’ll come with you—”
Wtf Elide, no, you’re smarter than this!!!! Alien is sacrificing herself so you can be free, you run and get Alien’s comrades and then you have a chance to free Alien afterwards!! Goddamnit SJM you’re making me repulsed by Elide because all she is now is a tool to fawn over Alien dhfkhfksdh I'm so goddamn mad
Aelin’s soul splintered as she saw the iron box the escorts now carried between them. An ancient, iron coffin. Big enough for one person. Crafted for her.
Oof, so there’s the coffin bit I’ve been hearing about. Can’t really say I’m sorry for Alien. Yeah I know that’s mean, but she’s a massive unlikable selfish asshole who gets everything handed to her without her doing any work, so forgive me for not feeling bad when she finally gets a good deserved kick in the bottom.
“And tell Rowan,” Aelin said, fighting her own sob, “that I’m sorry I lied. But tell him it was all borrowed time anyway. Even before today, I knew it was all just borrowed time, but I still wish we’d had more of it.”
Again, good concept, just wasted on an absolute shit tier ship. Someone write an AU of this but with a good ship, yeah? And, y’know, rewrite most of the plot so it makes sense.
Maeve lowered the mask and drawled to Aelin, “Rumor claims you will bow to no one, Heir of Fire.” That serpentine smile. “Well, now you will bow to me.” She pointed to the sand. Aelin obeyed.
I shouldn’t be enjoying this as much as I am, but ahhh feels so good to read Alien get taken down a peg or two after being so irritatingly arrogant! Feels good, feels organic.
“Take off your shirt.” Aelin tugged her shirt out of her pants and slung it over her head, tossing it in the sand beside her. Then she removed the flexible cloth around her breasts.
So.... a bra, essentially? Is she wearing a bra? Or was SJM unsure of whether or not medieval women wore bras and was like “Ehhhh I’ll describe it as just a cloth, that way nobody can point fingers at me for shitty world building!”
Aelin didn’t fight as [the Fae warriors] each gripped her by an arm and hauled her up. Spread her arms wide. The sea air kissed her breasts, her navel.
Man, given how there’s only a few chapters left, this may be the last unnecessary focus on a female character’s breasts we get in this novel. And it’s right before our main character endures a harsh whipping. Oh SJM, you never disappoint.
Cairn halted. [Aelin] felt him studying the tattoo on her back. Rowan’s loving words, written there in the Old Language. Cairn snorted. Then she felt him revel in how he’d destroy that tattoo.
Evidently, SJM never learned what nuanced characters are. Cairn whips Alien some until Maeve orders them to chuck Alien into the iron coffin. Manon peaces out with Elide, and I hope SJM lets them run away with Abraxos to a better novel.
Time—[Aelin] was grateful Elena had given her that stolen time. Grateful she had met them all, that she had seen some small part of the world, had heard such lovely music, had danced and laughed and known true friendship. Grateful that she had found Rowan. She was grateful.
Another good example of good concept that’s wasted on a shitty character. This should be breaking my heart, but it’s about Alien and I fucking hate Alien more than almost any other fictional character. So alas, I’m left just feeling hallow and tired.
So Aelin Galathynius dried her tears. And did not fight when Maeve strapped that beautiful iron mask over her face.
Seems odd Alien would describe what is essentially an object meant to torture her as beautiful, but alright. We’re almost done folks, buckle up for the final leg of this shitstorm of a journey.

I meant for this whole review to go in one post, but damn, I had a lot of complaints, way more than I thought once I started writing them down. Some are nitpicky; most are related to characters and writing choices. For the fans of this series, I did enjoy this series for what it is, but I’ll never defend it as great literature. It’s Sharknado levels of fun, and I live for stupid shit like that. For the haters, enjoy. Oh, and spoilers ahead.
Now, on to the cons, and hoo boy, are there a lot of them. First, I was shocked to see this was labeled book 7 and not 6. I had no interest in reading Tower of Dawn, as it was marketed as a side story novella. Kingdom of Ash expects you to have read it and spends little to no time explaining who all these new characters are. It’s not confusing, just annoying for those of us not invested in Chaol’s story enough to read the novella. If you like Chaol, more power to you. I just didn’t care enough about what was a sure outcome to waste my time reading a novella about him and only him. Nesryn goes with him as well, but she was barely a character in the fifth (fourth? I don’t know anymore) book, more a cool background piece than a real person. That’s not nearly enough for me to pick up an entire book.
Maas brings in four new “personalities” from Tower of Dawn that really just take up space and fawn over Aelin, just like everyone else. Hasar is just a crabbier version of Aelin; Sartaq loves Nesryn and that’s it; Yrene is Chaol’s wife who’s a healer and that’s it; and Borte likes arguing with her fiance. They might be more interesting in ToD, but here, they just read like cardboard cutouts. They’re unnecessary and boring.
And speaking of unnecessary, there are WAY too many POV characters in these books. What started with a handful of mostly essential characters has now become a library’s worth of them. Even Lysandra’s ward, Evangeline, gets a couple POV bits to herself. Why? They added nothing to the story aside from remind us that she was there and still alive. More POVs should only ever be added to further the story or themes. I kid you not, Elide and Lorchan are together for 90% of the last two books, and for some reason, they both have POV chapters. Elide was already established and should’ve been the only one necessary, but you know, Lorchan’s hot so we should hear him angst too. And that is all he does, by the way, angsts over Elide. Hell, by the end, I was a little surprised Abraxos didn’t have his own POV chapter.
Maas also adds nonsensical things in to ramp up the drama. The worst offender is the character Darrow. He and TWO other old men boss Aedion around throughout this entire book, because... reasons, I guess. They don’t recognize Aelin as queen, fine. But they’re three old dudes against Aedion, who literally commands their entire army and the fire-bringer all the people in their whole country rally to. If anyone can give me a logical reason why Aedion didn’t just ignore every order they attempted to give him, I’m all ears. Instead, he tiptoes around them constantly and outright steals his own army from under their noses to do what he wants anyway. Why? They all know damn well Aelin is the rightful queen and they wouldn’t even have an army without her and Aedion. She could crush them under her thumb, and they all know that too. Hell, Aedion’s treason would even be forgiven in moments when she took her throne back from... no one. Darrow isn’t even trying to be king of Terrasen. He just doesn’t like the idea of this bratty teenager being his queen, and who can blame him? Yeah, I know she wants her country to be different, but she can’t change anything from the sidelines when the old rules are the only things keeping those men in power over her. There is no good reason for Aedion to obey any of their orders. They can do nothing to stop him, and they all know it. They are literally only there so Aedion has someone besides Lysandra to be pissed off at.
Speaking of Aedion being pissed off at Lysandra. For the haters out there, yes, he has every right to be mad at her. She may not have been the one to come up with this insanity, sure, but she knew Aelin suspected it might be necessary. Telling the one person who foams at the mouth anytime someone gets within spitting distance of his cousin that maybe something terrible could happen to her, making this plan necessary, should be at the top of your to-do list. She knew damn well what she was doing and how he would react the entire time Aelin was teaching her to play pretend. He should be angry with her for not telling him what was going through Aelin’s head, not for following the orders of their queen. Yes, him throwing he naked out in the snow was a major dick move, and I’m glad that she didn’t let him forget it. What I don’t condone is his reaction to seeing Aelin again. He just hugs her like nothing ever happened. He’s an asshole to Lysandra for months, but he just forgives Aelin for everything as soon as he sees her. I’m sorry but no. I would’ve forgiven the entire conflict between him and Lysandra being tedious if he had just punched her in the face before he hugged her. God knows she deserves it for all the shit she’s pulled over the course of six books.
So, I hate Aelin Galathynius. Like straight up hate her. She went from being a brat in the first few books to being the worst case of Mary Sueitis I have ever seen outside of self-insert fanfiction. First, she’s a secret princess, a “twist” anyone with a brain could see coming. She’s also somehow the best at everything she does, even though she shows no evidence of any of it. How does the country’s best assassin get caught? On top of that, how does anyone even know who the country’s best assassin is? Shouldn’t hiding your identity be rule number one in the assassin handbook? This shit-licker could’ve been any happy-ass teenager with a knife pretending to be this famous assassin when they caught her. How would they know? Answer, they shouldn’t have any idea (that would’ve also made for a much more interesting story). So, not only is she the best at everything she tries for reasons, she’s also the only one in the whole damn world with fire magic, the only thing that can hurt the demons for a majority of the series. And she doesn’t just have regular old everyday fire magic. No, she has fire to rival fifteen suns going supernova at the same time. She’s also the prettiest and smartest and nicest and snarkiest and funniest girl in the world. She outsmarts someone thousands of years old who could’ve snapped her neck or dropped her in to a literal Hell with a flick of her wrist. But no, Princess Mary Sue wants her new boytoy free, so the villainess has to get tricked into letting him go. Now, let’s not forget she’s also the Chosen One who deus ex machinas her way out of sacrificing herself because no one can do anything without her there to save the day. Seriously, no one ever wins anything unless she’s there. It happens more than once in this book. Her boytoy and company show up to rescue her from aforementioned villainess just as she’s breaking herself out, and they can’t get her chains off until she somehow shows them how to unlock them. She then proceeds to get them out of the country through her magic of summoning deus ex machinas whenever she needs one, and they arrive just in time to rescue Chaol and Nesryn from certain doom. She stops a cascading river with fire because science, and when all hope is lost back home, she shows up on a magical white deer with the Rohir- oops, I mean her army. She also somehow holds off two of the most powerful creatures in the world with her assassin skills and barely any magic, because... villains have to lose, I guess. You know what Aelin loses by the end of the book? Her humanity, which she suddenly cares about ten pages before it’s gone. Aedion lost his father and at least half an army at his command. Manon lost the only people she really cared about in the whole world, and she could do nothing but watch them sacrifice themselves. And Aelin lost her humanity when she’s already been living as a fae since book 3. Oh God, how will she ever survive such a loss? She is actually the worst.
These books, this one in particular, are clearly written with a younger audience in mind (much younger than me at least, and I’m 30), and I strongly believe the target audience is girls. There is so much description of how beautiful the men in this series are that it almost borders on obscene. I do appreciate having a clear picture of what characters look like, but I do not need to know about all the rippling muscles and long fingers that all the men in this series seem to have. Even bookworm Dorian is described as being oh-so-sexy even though he doesn’t appear to have ever handled a weapon in his life. There is a lot of pandering to the female audience, especially with the sex scenes. In a YA novel, these are pretty inappropriate. She started with sex scenes being a fade-to-black kind of event, and now, almost every single one is described in disgusting detail. I like romance as much as the next girl, but if I wanted soft-core porn, I’d read romance novels. To top that shift off, she still insists on using “rutting” as a substitute for “fucking,” and I think that’s what bothers me the most about the whole change here. They are completely interchangeable in every context, to the point where I just read “rutting” as “fucking” every single time. This isn’t Brandon Sanderson’s silly but story-appropriate swearing. It’s just lazy writing. And detailed descriptions of sex are okay, but swearing? Someone call Takamata. We need to start the Inquisition. (History of the World reference for anyone confused.)
This story ends exactly as you should expect it to, with a happily ever after. None of the main characters die, and those with names go out as sacrifices, which is honestly consistent with the rest of the deaths in this series. The deaths we do get are mostly to make the main characters feel bad for no real reason. Aedion even flat-out states that Gavriel could’ve stayed inside the walls, and there is no argument, author or characters, as to why he had to go outside. At least the Thirteen’s sacrifice makes more sense. It was still pretty dumb to have them go out at all, but I don’t know if I could come up with a better way to destroy those witch towers. What they did was noble and understandable in context, though there were probably any number of ways it could’ve been avoided. I’ve seen Desolation of Smaug. Just drop a dragon/whale/elephant-Lysandra on top of the tower before they even get it fixed up to move again.
One last complaint that I have regarding the ending is largely the villains. There are three of them, and all three kind of go out like bitches. Erawan, the dickhead pulling the strings since book 1, gets tricked and healed to death. There are a lot of millennia-old creatures getting tricked into doing stupid things in these books. Manon’s grandmother (who never gets a name by the way) gets blown up by Asterin. Honestly, hers was probably the most satisfying end of the three because Asterin got the vengeance she deserved for her hunter and child. Maeve somehow became the biggest threat halfway through the series, and she meets her end in the most extravagant fashion, impaled by Fenrys and then decapitated by Aelin and burned to ash. What irritates me most about Maeve is she could’ve been great. If anyone has read the manga, Magi, you know what I’m talking about. Maeve is discount Gyokuen with half the threat and less than a quarter the sense. Where Gyokuen is highly capable, both as a fighter and a politician, Maeve is kind of a pushover who gets tricked by our “heroes” numerous times. She’s shown preparing for all sorts of unlikely eventualities, but she somehow can’t handle the plucky teenagers. Give me a break. From the moment you meet her, you know Gyokuen is going to be one of those bad guys that will require some clever thinking to defeat. I felt like Maeve could just be snuck up on and murdered by anyone who knew her schedule. Her last ditch effort against Aelin was clever, but other than that, she barely puts up a fight despite all the fear and hype she gets from almost every character in the book.
Now, like I said above, I did enjoy these books. I don’t feel like my time was wasted or that I was manipulated by them at all. I had fun with them the same way that I have fun with SyFy channel original movies. The characters and story had so much more potential than what this amounted to, but I don’t hate this series at all. Yes, the subplot with the gods was idiotic and unnecessary, but the valg were interesting as an enemy type. Yes, the romance shoved down my throat could be awful at times, but some of the relationships were genuinely sweet. Chaol and Dorian are the best bros, and I love Lysandra taking it upon herself to protect this little girl when she could’ve looked the other way. Manon’s relationship with Asterin was great as well. Do I wish it was better? Absolutely. Should it be boycotted by everyone? Of course not. Despite their problems, these books are fun, fluffy, popcorn movie fun, and sometimes, that’s just fine.

A/N: I’m skipping the play by play of the Lake Monster Chapter, I’m stuck on it and honestly I want to finish this POV. Instead this is a little self reflection after the days events and washing dishes.

He sat at his work table warring against the day's events. Ever since he found her drunk on a rooftop, his life had been turned upside down.
He did not know how to reconcile the foreign feeling growing in his gut, one he had not experienced for two hundred three years and twenty-seven days, the desire, no the need to protect. To prove to himself, to relieve the shame he felt as a male. To mitigate his failure.
And he had almost failed again. It took all his concentration to keep the lake frozen, to reforge the escape path. It would have been his failure if. . . He shook his head of those thoughts.
He winced as the shirt cuff brushed against his wrist, it was a pain he deserved. His shame was written from his face to his wrist. He did not know if it was ironic or foretelling that she had burned the last line of his declaration to the world. That he would need to tattoo the lines again because he had failed her, left an unfamiliar ache in his gut.
Gods be damned. This girl.
No one else. Because I am sick of it. Worth more dead.
No one else.
There was more to her reaction. Because I am sick of it. She would have been eight when her parents were assassinated in their bed. The rumors had always been that the entire royal family was slaughtered in their beds. Those that survived the initial slaughter were killed in the following days. Terrasen had held out for a few weeks, but eventually their army fell. The rumors said the princess died in the river during her attempt to escape, but in the taverns and lonely roads her people still whispered to the winds that their Queen would return. Aelin of the Wildfire.
Because I didn’t want you to die to save me.
He would never forget her proclamation that Aelin Galathynius was dead. When he looked into her eyes he believed her proclamation. How many had died to ensure their queen lived? What sacrifice was made? Of whom? What made her cringe every time she heard her name? How the rutty hell did she make it to Adarlan, to an assassins guild?
Reminding me again and again how rutting worthless and awful and cowardly I am.
Ten years, for ten years he flowed from form to form. His body survived. For ten years she survived, but maybe like him just her body. Maybe like him, she could never bring herself to end it. But unlike him, because if she ended it, their sacrifice would have been in vain.
I have no one left. No one.
And there it was, they were two souls, lost to an abyss of darkness, alone. So damn alone. But unlike him, an eight year old girl did not deserve the fate handed to her.
He did not hate her, he hated that she forced him to feel. He hated to see her dead eyes every day. He hated that the world turned against a little girl that dreamed to become a healer and instead she became a killer. He hated that no matter how hard he tried, her blood sang to him. He hated that she was likely his carranam and together they could change the world.
She has no hope left in her heart.
Hope. They needed hope.
Maybe, just maybe they could find a way out of the darkness together.

SO I decided to record my full reaction to Tower of Dawn. It may jump around a lot and views change considerably but I had fun with it. And I hope y’all would bear with me and my weird ass thoughts.

Feyre Archeron: "I was not a pet, not a doll, not an animal. I was a survivor, and I was strong. I would not be weak, or helpless again I would not, could not be broken. Tamed."

Katy Swartz: "Words were the most powerful tool. Simple and so often underestimated. They could heal. They could destroy. And I needed to use my words now."

Vasilisa: "All my life, I have been told ‘go’ and ‘come.’ I am told how I will live, and I am told how I must die. I must be a man’s servant and a mare for his pleasure, or I must hide myself behind walls and surrender my flesh to a cold, silent god. I would walk into the jaws of hell itself, if it were a path of my own choosing. I would rather die tomorrow in the forest than live a hundred years of the life appointed me."
