" i feel uncomfortable around tall people, what if they try to lick my head? " ( salem @ azzy )
AS IF SALEM HAS JUST said the first and only thing to break the hunter’s brain, azzy stares at them in silence, head tilted every so slightly to the left and eyes mere brown slits. squeezing them shut, he lifts his hand and rubs his nose. “ ok. ok. last thing I expected to hear today. actually - no. ” he drops his hand and steeples his fingers, tipping his head to look at the sky. “ that would imply I still expected it. I just… genuinely did not expect any word that came out of your mouth. ” azzy himself isn’t fairly tall. he’s average height, he would say. and salem isn’t exactly out of place around him. so it’s not like they need to worry about azzy licking their head… right?
“ has this happened to you before? ” azzy finally blurts out. “ like… was that a past experience or something? ”

I wasn't kidding when I said Dal always cries whenever he gets mad.
It isn't something he can control very well, if at all; whether he's throwing someone's cruel words back at them, repeating whatever happened to himself in private, assessing a situation from a distance, or on the brink of succumbing to his rage, tears will fall without fail. If he's lucky, his hair can hide it, or he can blame it on dust/pollen in the air.
But we all know how bad of a liar he is. =_="

John Seed is a comfort character for some people. Folks like to ship him with their deputies or craft redemption arcs for him.
There's nothing wrong with that, obviously.
But I just can't wrap my head around it.
There's nothing comforting about the way John Seed treated Joey Hudson. I don't understand why the ordeal she went through doesn't seem to matter to fans of his.
She was bait for the rookie deputy and nothing more, because she wasn't going to give in and join the cult.
He terrorized Joey and the rest of Fall's End, stooping to the lowest, most inhumane levels to get his way. Some even theorize that he hurt the "sinners" in his care just because he wanted to, for malicious, sadistic reasons that didn't have anything to do with the cult. At worst, some people go as far as to speculate that he raped Joey.
It's easy to see why someone might come to that conclusion. The way he acts is deplorable and he makes everything feel extremely personal, sometimes in ways that can be interpreted as sexually charged. He'll do anything in order to get his way because "no" is antithetical to him. He regularly flies off the handle, so much so that Joseph is threatening to cast him out. All the touching and getting right up in the player's face is so uncomfortable and obsessive (which is the point, but I digress).
So why does he get to be redeemed and venerated by fans? Don't his actions warrant consequences?
Are people willing to let him off the hook because he's attractive? Because he had a horrible, abusive childhood? Obviously he's got a lot more lore than most of the cast. Is that something people are interested in exploring for him over other characters?
I'm not trying to come after anyone personally. There's nothing wrong with liking villains and Jacob, Faith, and Joseph have also done terrible things to innocent people.
Which is like, fine. It's a video game.
And I know that John, like Joey, is a victim of Ubisoft's choppy, inconsistent writing and storytelling. Things got changed and swapped and cut during development that got us to where we are, with the story we have. Flaws and all, not like it was ever going to be perfect.
But in my opinion, I feel like the adoration for John does a huge disservice to Joey. People make thirsty edits of him while she's literally tied up behind him. It's tasteless and makes the optics of her situation look even creepier.
Her pain has largely been ignored for as long as the game has existed. I can't for the life of me figure out why.

This is a random thought but I always assumed Mr D chose to look middleaged to look more like Zeus (as an insult). Like. Let me attempt to explain:
When I read the books, Zeus in my head looked like that one piece of official art— yk the one with the beard. So I assumed Dionysus chose to look middleaged similarly to Zeus but like— more bummified. Especially because Apollo is still not sure why he chose that form in TOA (Granted, that could be Apollo’s overall vanity talking)
Like I assumed it was like when a parent reprimands their kid and they do a mock impression of them to be sassy.
Do I have a good reason as to why Dionysus would choose to do that if Zeus never sees him? No. Do I think there’s something funny about the idea of Dionysus being banished then showing up at the solstice looking like his dad if he got real scruffy? Yeah sure why not lol

i need all future comics writers of frank (and anyone on DDBA) to stop trying to write him as a guy who had a normal childhood and was always just kinda Like That. or that he was simply destined to become the punisher, but that’s kind of a separate topic.
people who go into the military at 18 rarely have normal childhoods, they are often raised in abusive environments that are normalized. the urge to go into the military typically does not come from people who aren’t used to some form of abuse, because why would you willingly want to go into that? unless you are susceptible to indoctrination toward having faith in a system from a young age and aren’t able to discern the red flags? the military system preys on poor young men in particular by scouting them and offering all these bells and whistles (free college, healthcare, community) and feelings of importance, but then just forgets about them afterward.
side note: it’s actually such a disservice to many veterans to forget about how the military is an abusive system. it literally strips you of everything with no help in reintegrating back into society (other than by members of the same community). i get TPS1 tried to do something with this but dropped the ball. it feels like many writers just use his marine background as some sort of fun fact that only comes into play with certain things, but it very much shapes who you are and changes your identity. it’s a very cult-like system.
many people who want to serve are related to others who have prior. many people (especially men) who want to serve at that age have an underlying need that they think can be met. many people are brainwashed by military propaganda and believe it is the right thing to do. especially when it comes to religion, there’s this idea of men using their bodies to protect the innocent that goes back hundreds of years, and this idea of serving god, which we see young francis try to do in two ways. (side note: why do they keep removing his religious background? i liked the nod to it in the nmcu but it seems modern comics writers (looking at you jason aaron) just forget this?) besides, the functions of religion for people are very similar to the functions of the military as far as members go, namely community and a sense of greater purpose.
to me, as a reader/watcher, threads of probable abuse history are present in frank’s character, and i wish we had a writer brave enough to write about it. why else would he care so much about innocents and victims? why else would he become suicidal and guilt stricken when he hurts an innocent? it makes you think: was there no one who protected him or someone else he knew?
and this may not mean anything but idk i think he’s so much more tragic and juicy if you look at him like someone who is not the perfect victim (and maybe doesn’t even recognize their abuse) but someone who instead of healing and becoming soft, becomes angry and violent afterward. trauma, especially repeated trauma, does not effect people all the same way and i really wish they would just be bold enough to work with that. i get trying to piss off the alt right but completely changing the character to fit the same stereotype of a ‘psychopath’ (which is an outdated term) as they do in horror movies about killer children is just poor writing. again, talking about punisher 2022, but this was kinda in nmcu too. and sure yeah they’ve retired his character (but not the punisher….? ok) in the comics, but for when he inevitably does come back, yeah.

INCREDIBLY random thought: since azul's mom is the owner of THE most popular restaurant in the entire coral sea (actually insane I keep forgetting this canon lore fact) does she have the twisted wonderland version of a wikipedia page? does azul have a wiki page?? does everyone in mer society know who azul is because of his status as the assumed heir to this super popular restaurant everyone eats at
It's probably more word of mouth under the sea since technology like phones and computers can't exist or function, and I'm not sure how well-known her restaurant is with humans, faeries, and beastfolk on the surface. But I like to imagine that she's somewhat of a celebrity underwater. You mention her name or the surname Ashengrotto and everyone immediately knows what you're talking about. It's one of those things where if you don't know it or have never eaten there, everyone will react like: "What do you mean you've never visited?! Do you live in a sea trench? How could you not know about it?! The food is delicious!"
Azul might not be as well-known as his mother because he's made sure no photos of him exist in the sea, which means no one can place a face to the name. Merfolk only know that Mrs. Ashengrotto has a son, who is rather elusive and is currently studying at the famed NRC. I think taking on the form of a human has allowed Azul to bury most of his insecurities, so when he has to go home for holidays and transform back to his original form his insecurities resurface. So I like to think he doesn't visit as much for that reason, but he'll mask it under a convenient excuse like I can't leave when the lounge needs its manager or there's a lot that must be done on campus; I'll return home for the next break. Of course that doesn't mean there are no existing photos of Azul. He may have destroyed the ones from his elementary days, but his mother still has an entire album filled with photos of Azul's life, ranging from when he was just a tiny fry to now.
If you start dating Azul, he makes it his mission to never take you to the family restaurant for a date because he knows his mother and the staff would not leave the both of you alone. You'll be given a lover's special for dessert, much to Azul's embarrassment.
But the way that that can easily be used as a means for gaslighting you... Everyone will tell you how lucky you are to be dating the heir to the family restaurant. You'll be fed so well! Isn't that the best life you could ever ask for: a well-off lover who will be a great chef and manager like his mother, who can provide you with the most delicious meals? If you were thinking of breaking up with Azul, you're reconsidering after hearing countless mers tell you just how "lucky" you are and how you would be “ruining a perfectly good opportunity at a comfortable life.”
