man oh man i have so many thoughts about how insistently (and i think kind of blindly/uncritically) my university pushes us to frame absolutely every type of learning experience we offer to students in the language of "career readiness" and "career-connected learning" and "professional development." i totally get that we have a large first-gen student population who are making a big investment of time & money in a college degree and who want to be sure that doing so will grant them access to greater socioeconomic mobility. and i DO think it is important for us to think about like, ok, long-term, what comes after these experiences or after this four years in college, and what can we be doing to set students up for success as they transition out of college and into the rest of their lives. but like. idk man. i find it really bleak sometimes. just this relentless messaging that the only thing that matters in your adult life is how competitive you are on the job market. and i also think it pushes us to just like, kind of warp or distort the things we are offering students to make them fit under that rubric, or that particular framework for valuing things? like if we want to convince a student to study abroad we can't be like, living abroad is one of the most amazing things you can do. it's so fun/scary/exhilarating/awesome and it will expand your horizons in ways you can't even anticipate and it will expose you to different ways of seeing the world and you will get to interact with people whose perspectives have been shaped by totally different cultures & contexts and it will help you become more independent and more confident in your ability to handle unfamiliar situations and it will give you stories you will remember all your life and you will build strong friendships with the people you meet and you will take cool pictures or buy little knickknacks that remind you of those experiences in your daily life forever and it will motivate you to travel more and when/if you have kids of your own you will probably make it a priority to travel with them if you can or to encourage them to study abroad when they're older because you know how amazing that experience is and you want them to have access to those kinds of life-changing opportunities. like instead of saying any of that we have to say oh this will develop your skills in time management and project management and professional communication with your supervisors and it will give you something impressive to talk about on your resume or in job interviews and blah blah blah. or even if you use a more capacious definition of career readiness that focuses more on habits of mind (like, in the workplace you will sometimes have to navigate complex situations where expectations are not fully clear! you will also likely have this experience living abroad!), it's still just like... idk man... i find it so reductive lol like yeah sure but "get a skill that applies to your job as a project manager or an IT professional or whatever" just feels so much... Less... than the more humanistic appeal to like, this will enrich your life in so many ways, and you will, through these experiences, just become an all-around more emotionally mature, confident, and interesting human being who has engaged in an experience that challenged you and helped you grow. but then i am all in on the humanities and humanism in general so maybe i am biased here and someone who wants to be a software engineer or whatever would be wholly unmoved by that kind of appeal. idk. anyway. it looks like our team is going to be subsumed into our career center in the next year or two so like. what can you really do except to inwardly say "wow i kinda hate this"
#i ALSO have feelings about how like#i went to a fancy expensive college with a whole lot of rich kids#and nobody ever once talked to me about career readiness lol. like i don't even know if i was aware we had a career center of any kind#i got to spend four years really thinking about like#what problems fascinated me and what writers did i love & hate and what ideas did i want to explore in writing#and now i work at a demographically very different institution#and even though we are not a vocational school so much of what we push at them is like#so vocational or so like#oh we all know you're not here to think about big ideas. you're here to get Credentials that document your Professional Skills#so you can enter the Workforce#i mean the faculty i don't think are like that. but SO much of the student success/extracurricular programming stuff is like#really focused on that#and maybe it was like... my college was like y'all are gonna be fine you've got money and access to this alumni network#and access to our brand#you can do whatever you want and you're going to be golden in life#whereas here's like ok you are going to have to work a lot harder to make your way in this world#so idk. i can understand it!!! i just also find it yucky. like the idea that#for some kids college gets to be about Finding Yourself and Having Big Ideas#and for some kids college is like a professional certification program to help you get an entry-level professional position#so that you can have health insurance. maybe for the first time

How To Get a Psychiatric Service Dog Letter?
Step 1:
Consult with a Mental Health Professional To obtain a psychiatric service dog letter, the first step is to consult with a qualified mental health professional. This could be a psychiatrist, psychologist, or licensed therapist who has experience in assessing and treating psychiatric conditions. Schedule an appointment with the professional to discuss your mental health needs and determine if a psychiatric service dog would be beneficial for your condition.
Step 2:
Evaluate Your Eligibility and Need During the appointment, the mental health professional will assess your condition and determine if you meet the criteria for a psychiatric service dog. They will evaluate the severity of your mental health condition, the impact it has on your daily life, and whether a service dog would be an appropriate part of your treatment plan. This evaluation is important as it helps ensure that you truly need a psychiatric service dog and that it can effectively assist you.
Step 3:
Obtain a Psychiatric Service Dog Letter If the mental health professional determines that you meet the necessary criteria and would benefit from a psychiatric service dog, they can provide you with a psychiatric service dog letter. This letter serves as official documentation stating that you have a mental health condition and require the assistance of a service dog. The letter should be written on the professional's official letterhead and include their contact information, license number, and a clear statement explaining your need for a psychiatric service dog. With this letter in hand, you can proceed with the necessary steps to acquire and train a psychiatric service dog.

In the Willamette Valley of Oregon, the long study of a butterfly once thought extinct has led to a chain reaction of conservation in a long-cultivated region.
The conservation work, along with helping other species, has been so successful that the Fender’s blue butterfly is slated to be downlisted from Endangered to Threatened on the Endangered Species List—only the second time an insect has made such a recovery.
[Note: "the second time" is as of the article publication in November 2022.]
To live out its nectar-drinking existence in the upland prairie ecosystem in northwest Oregon, Fender’s blue relies on the help of other species, including humans, but also ants, and a particular species of lupine.
After Fender’s blue was rediscovered in the 1980s, 50 years after being declared extinct, scientists realized that the net had to be cast wide to ensure its continued survival; work which is now restoring these upland ecosystems to their pre-colonial state, welcoming indigenous knowledge back onto the land, and spreading the Kincaid lupine around the Willamette Valley.
First collected in 1929 [more like "first formally documented by Western scientists"], Fender’s blue disappeared for decades. By the time it was rediscovered only 3,400 or so were estimated to exist, while much of the Willamette Valley that was its home had been turned over to farming on the lowland prairie, and grazing on the slopes and buttes.

Pictured: Female and male Fender’s blue butterflies.
Now its numbers have quadrupled, largely due to a recovery plan enacted by the Fish and Wildlife Service that targeted the revival at scale of Kincaid’s lupine, a perennial flower of equal rarity. Grown en-masse by inmates of correctional facility programs that teach green-thumb skills for when they rejoin society, these finicky flowers have also exploded in numbers.
[Note: Okay, I looked it up, and this is NOT a new kind of shitty greenwashing prison labor. This is in partnership with the Sustainability in Prisons Project, which honestly sounds like pretty good/genuine organization/program to me. These programs specifically offer incarcerated people college credits and professional training/certifications, and many of the courses are written and/or taught by incarcerated individuals, in addition to the substantial mental health benefits (see x, x, x) associated with contact with nature.]
The lupines needed the kind of upland prairie that’s now hard to find in the valley where they once flourished because of the native Kalapuya people’s regular cultural burning of the meadows.
While it sounds counterintuitive to burn a meadow to increase numbers of flowers and butterflies, grasses and forbs [a.k.a. herbs] become too dense in the absence of such disturbances, while their fine soil building eventually creates ideal terrain for woody shrubs, trees, and thus the end of the grassland altogether.
Fender’s blue caterpillars produce a little bit of nectar, which nearby ants eat. This has led over evolutionary time to a co-dependent relationship, where the ants actively protect the caterpillars. High grasses and woody shrubs however prevent the ants from finding the caterpillars, who are then preyed on by other insects.
Now the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are being welcomed back onto these prairie landscapes to apply their [traditional burning practices], after the FWS discovered that actively managing the grasslands by removing invasive species and keeping the grass short allowed the lupines to flourish.
By restoring the lupines with sweat and fire, the butterflies have returned. There are now more than 10,000 found on the buttes of the Willamette Valley."

U.S.-based friends! For no particular reason, I'm compiling a list of resources that might be helpful to people in the coming four-ish years or so.
Medical Resources
Medical Information Removed By The Trump Administration
Jessica Valenti's Substack - a collection of the pages removed from the CDC's website. Includes documents on contraception and reproductive rights, sexual health, and intimate partner violence.
HRT
Trans Harm Reduction - website for HRT information, such as source testing, information on safe injection practices and disposal, and resources for sourcing injection suppplies. They also share links to healthcare resources.
DIY HRT: Everything I Can Legally Tell You by Lily Alexandre - information on self-medicating without a prescription. If this is unavailable, PLEASE let me know.
Reproductive
Plan C - an online database of telehealth providers, community networks, and websites that provide abortion pills by mail
Legit.Clinic - an easy way to check if a clinic is actually a crisis pregnancy center; uses Reproaction's database listed below
Crisis Pregnancy Centers
These are anti-choice organizations, usually run by or in connection to churches, who use misleading tactics and fearmongering to scare people out of seeking abortions. They often advertise things like "abortion counseling" (which is really just talking people out of abortion), and abortion pill "reversal." Their main purpose is to either scare you out of seeking an abortion, or to stall you long enough that the process to get an abortion is more difficult.
Reproaction's Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Center Database - an online database of anti-abortion "crisis pregnancy centers" that rely on misleading information to talk pregnant people out of getting an abortion
Expose Fake Clinics - an online resource for leaving reviews of crisis pregnancy centers and their misleading claims
Name and Gender Changes
Federal
SSA Sex Designation Change Questionnaire (archived) - as of Jan 26th 2025, this page has been taken down on the official Social Security website. That does NOT mean you cannot change your gender marker, it is just being purposefully obscured. One thing to note; even before the current administration, there was no option for an unspecified gender designation, so X will not be an option unfortunately.
Social Security Card Replacement - this is the form you will need to fill out in order to change your name or gender designation.
State
A4TE's ID Documents Center - state-specific information on how to change your name and gender marker on ID documents like birth certificates, driver's licenses, etc. Also has information on passports, but that is unfortunately outdated as of January 26 2025. (thanks, @wannabeast13!)
Miscellaneous
r/DataHoarder - a subreddit dedicated to archiving digital information. They've been heavily focused on documenting information that has been removed due to the Trump administration.
This is by no means an exhaustive list. I'm compiling resources as I find them. If you have anything you think should be added, send me a message!
Lastly,
It's Okay To Take A Step Back
Don't let the continuous onslaught of bad news send you into a doom spiral! Take a deep breath. Get some water. Log off, get together with friends, join or start local communities. The world isn't all bad, even if it feels like it is. The most important thing right now is that we stay together and not let the bad overwhelm us into apathy.

UK Supreme Court Ruling - 16 Points of Clarification and Reassurance
Welcome to day 2 comrades, we survived the night and now we're going to pick up arms and fight back; what are the most effective arms you ask, seductively in my ear? KNOWLEDGE! That's right, let's look at this ruling that's so full of holes it'd make an orgy a logistical nightmare.
My job deals with legal documents and legislation so I have attempted to translate some of the ruling and clarify it for everyone, to expel the rumours and present the facts as written in all their bigoted glory. Facts are in black while my comments and opinions are in red italics.
A special thank you to Transactual and QueerAF for their resources and articles (linked at the bottom).
Also included are some of Timothy Snyder's "20 Lessons on Tyranny". Because it's fucking relevant.
The Supreme Court chose not to hear from any trans people, choosing to listen to only hate groups. This suggests anti-trans biases from the beginning. The only pro-trans source allowed was Amnesty International who affirmed that the Scottish Court's interpretation is correct, Amnesty's mention is in passing however the court notes that it is "particularly grateful" to the TERF lawyer for his input, "particularly grateful" is just a phrase but it potentially hints at further bias.
The crux of the judges "logic" seems to be that the basis of being a woman is being born that way and the basis for being trans is possessing a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC). My brain literally cannot process the stupidity of this. Obviously inter-sex people are not mentioned. What about people who no longer match the definition of biological woman (i.e. cancer survivors who have had organs removed or due to health conditions) what are they protected by? If a woman has had her cervix removed for health reasons makes a sexual harassment complaint against her line manager, can it be dismissed because she, legally, isn't a woman? There are hundreds of unanswered questions and examples the court just vomitted into public with no intention of solving.
An element that the judges came to repeatedly was that if trans people were not recognised by their sex at birth then the Equality Act would be "inconsistent". For example the EA refers to 'pregnant women' but because trans women cannot get pregnant and some trans men can, by referring to women', Parliament was clearly intended 'woman' to mean 'biological female' because only 'biological females' can become pregnant. And that's it. That's fucking it. The judges decided it would be easier if women were all grouped under one category with no variation, that clarity around pregnancy was too difficult and it was best to rely on a single word written 15 years ago when inclusive language was very uncommon, let alone in halls of power.
The ruling makes zero (0) mention of Inter-Sex people. Once again Inter-Sex people have been left entirely out of the discussion and are bound by their birth certificates.
The ruling refers to "biological" and "certified" sex but doesn't define either, only suggesting that "biological" is what's on your birth certificate and that "certified" is people with a GRC. I'm not a midwife but I'm reasonably sure that babies don't come out holding a birth certificate, in fact in the UK it can take 2 weeks to get a certificate in which time decisions can be made for inter-sex babies that are not represented on the birth certificate. Additionally the court only recognises two binary sexes which is provably false. Gender is a spectrum according to every biologist who ever lived. Now that "biological" and "certified" sex are different, trans people cannot make claims based on "biological" sex, for example trans people now can't make a claim for equal pay or sexual harassment. Transgender people can now legally be forced out of the work environment and are at a higher risk of harm from others because their "certified" sex doesn't match their "biological" sex.
Single Sex Spaces have always been protected by the Equality Act. Let me say that one more time: SINGLE SEX SPACES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PROTECTED BY THE EQUALITY ACT. The law already allowed keeping transgender people out of 'single sex spaces' (which is another bullshit term we could spend an hour taking apart) which raised the question why was this case even brought forward? More and more the ruling just seems to be ideologically based with little regard for solving or clarifying anything.
Single Sex Spaces are also never defined, does a space have to be declared a 'woman only space' under the Equality Act or is it a space where one may expect to find a large number of women? It is in the ambiguity here that a lot of people will be targeted, told to get out or they're calling the police because this is a 'single sex space' even though the law never once tells us what that is.
The Gender Recognition Act (2004) is now in question because the ruling states that "trans women are men and trans men are women, with or without legal gender recognition." Theoretically the GRA now has no effect which logically follows that GRC's are in-valid. This leads nicely onto the next point:
Transgender people in public bathrooms; the ruling never once mentions toilets, bathrooms, restrooms or anything similar presumably because these are covered under 'single sex spaces'. Seeing as, in the courts view, transgender people no longer match their sex they are, theoretically, no longer allowed in public bathrooms of their sex, so transgender women should return to the mens and transgender men should return to the womens. This suggestion is unclear because, as with a lot of other things in this dogshit ruling, it is never defined or clarified. This is an excellent opportunity for solidarity if Trans Men gather or take selfies in women's bathrooms with your magnificent beards, glorious muscles and wonderful masc energy, that is, apparently, right where they want you. I have seen several claims that there is a specific ruling that forbids transgender men from entering women's public restrooms however I can find no trace of it in the text, if someone knows where it is please let me know.
The ruling has created a lot more legal questions and answered none of those it set out to. Lawyers and Lawmakers will spend the next few months and years arguing over what this means and how to interpret it, further more will the decisions of lawyers and lawmakers hold up in court when challenged? We may spend the next decade finding out. That also leads onto:
Do Not Obey In Advance (20 Lessons on Tyranny) There are a lot of unanswered questions from this ruling and, on a real life level, very little has changed at 1000 16/04 when the court read out its decision. So make sure you do not change your behaviour, hide away or surrender in advance; carry on as your beautiful glorious self and if someone challenges you tell them to sue your perfect arse because this is not a settled issue in the courts so why should you settle in advance? Fuck them. If the want us back in the closet they'll have to shove us in with a fucking bulldozer. Furthermore media organisations will take the bigoted side they always do and boil it down to the simplest point to the extent of being wrong - 'trans women banned from women's toilet's', 'trans women aren't allowed in public without identifying themselves', 'trans women never existed and were actually several queers in trench coats'. You get the idea. Dismiss these misleading headlines. Correct anyone who brings it up to you or you feel comfortable talking to. Remind them that these is no clarity and people are working very hard, every day to restore our rights. Once again, Do Not Obey In Advance.
Defend Institutions (20 Lessons on Tyranny) A fine time to remember that human rights organisiations, law projects and LGBT groups will be fighting this to the bitter end and they will need your support; please do your part for our freedom by donating to any charities or organisation you feel comfortable with, the following are just a suggestion and is not exhaustive: Stonewall - lobbying, activism. Mermaids - youth Equality Network - consultation. Transactual - adults, healthcare and legal, accurate trans news. QueerAF - news
At one point, the judgment explicitly refers to a trans woman as ‘a man who identifies as a woman’. Yeah, no, the judges were never biased at all, they totally had an open mind the whole time.
5 judges with a combined age of 338, 3 men, 2 women, know what a lesbian is better than you do. According to the ruling a lesbian "must be a [AFAB] female who is sexually oriented towards (or attracted to) [AFAB] females." Apparently the concept of sexual orientation would be "rendered meaningless" if we included trans women in relationships and that would "wrongly affect the composition of lesbians as a group." WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? THE COMPOSITION OF LESBIAN GROUPS? What do those words, in that order, even mean? And just appreciate, for a moment, that the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom doesn't believe that transgender should be allowed to enter certain types of relationships, wasn't that a hallmark of South Africa's despicable Apartheid that only certain types of people were allowed in certain relationships?
The Scottish Government is allowed to appeal this ruling however it is unclear if they will do so, they have had a change in leader since the case began and their new leader is significantly less pro-trans than the former; on top of that the Scottish Government are losing on several fronts and may want to drop this if they feel it isn't a vote winner. Because fuck standing up for human rights yeah? All that matters is winning an undemocratic popularity contest, that's where the money is. Not human decency or morality.
What about the European Court of Human Rights? We don't know how they will react to this however they have previously stated that failing to recognise a trans woman as legally a woman violated her Article 8 rights (respect for private and family life) (Goodwin vs UK). Oh look. Europe may be our salvation. Again. If only there was some kind of union we could join to protect us in the future.
According to the court's data there are about 48,000 trans man and 48,000 trans women in England and Wales (96,000), 19,990 trans people in Scotland (115, 990 UK total). Only 8,464 of those have a GRC. Which means...drum roll please... Trans people are 0.17% of the UK population and this law primarily targets 7.3% of THAT population, or 0.012% of the UK population!
Relevant Quotes -
Transactual Statement - “This ruling has no real purpose beyond ideological objection to the existence of trans people. There is no evidence of harms arising from the system of rights and protections which have been in place since 2010, only increasing hostility and hypothetical fears being leveraged to enable anti-trans discrimination."
Queeraf - By rooting misogyny in women’s ‘shared biology’, rather than our shared oppression under patriarchy, the Supreme Court relies on incredibly conservative ideas about gender as a naturalised phenomenon. In reality, trans women experience misogynistic discrimination as much as, if not more than, many other women.
@ayeforscotland - this will never be a doomerism blog.
@theinimitablefuckstormkilligan - If there's one thing I know about my fellow UK folks, it's that we're all tough as nails. So, if you're from the UK and you're trans: I believe in you. You are a powerful warrior. Your soul is a conduit for the light of love and life. You're gonna do just fine.
@on-a-lucky-tide - This isn't the end. We will fight on. We will not comply. We do not bow to fascism. We survived Section 28. We will survive this.
@isabela-merceds - trans women have existed long before those stuffy bigots sitting in a court room have. trans women will continue to exist long after they're dead and rotting in the earth.
Admiral Hackett - "Stand fast. Stand strong. Stand together."

We Become We

pairing: husband!lee minho x reader genre/warnings: friends to lovers, marriage of convenience, fluff, poor attempts at me trying to be funny, mc's gender is not specified word count: 1.02k note: i am not dead yay. i tried my best since i haven't had time to write for almost a month so please take this as a peace offering ♡
Marriage. It’s an interesting concept, isn’t it?
You’ve always thought so, at least. Two people agreeing to sign a legal document and tethering their lives to each other for whatever reason, be it love, societal expectations, familial pressure, financial security, etc.
Yours happens to be a man named Lee Minho. The same man you’ve been friends with for as long as you can remember. The same man who asked you to marry him for a reason you didn’t get to learn until he was already down on one knee.
(“I’m sorry, you want me to WHAT?” “Marry me. Please, I need health insurance.”
“Okay, yes, sure, whatever; now please get off the floor. People are staring.”)
Lee Minho, who, after dragging you to the courthouse and legally becoming your husband, finally elaborated on how his job would pay him more and cover both of your health insurances if he was married. So really, in his words, he was “doing you a huge favor” by marrying you.
And, in all honesty, he really was. No, you didn’t have a ring to show off your new husband’s weird skill at finding loopholes in company policy, and you’re like thirty-five percent sure the two of you are committing some kind of marriage fraud, but does it really matter when you can finally start using the hot water in your dingy apartment without worrying if you’ll have enough money to fund your crippling caffeine addiction? The government will have to drag you kicking and screaming before you resort back to mankind’s cruelest form of torture: cold showers.
Not to mention that marriage didn’t even change your relationship with Minho. And why would it? You’re still you, and he’s still him. He gets on your nerves just the same, maybe even a little bit more after he decided to frame your marriage certificate in his living room and send a photo to all your mutual friends. You’ll never forgive Minho for laughing at your helplessly panicked state when the group chat wouldn’t stop exploding with messages and incessant calls.
You’re still his best friend that resides in his apartment four out of seven days of the week while he inhabits yours for the other three. Maybe that’s why, two weeks after your “wedding,” when it was time to renew your lease, Minho suggested with a simple shrug of his shoulders that you move in with him since “you’re here all the time anyway.”
You’ve really got to learn how to say no to him because now you wake up next to your best friend/roommate/husband in his one bedroom, one bathroom apartment at the crack of dawn with a light pressure on your chest and fur in your face when his cats decide you need to wake up right now to feed them.
Not to say you don’t like the new arrangement! No, that would be the furthest from the truth.
Sure, you didn’t appreciate your skin care routine being interrupted by the unexpectedly high-pitched scream Minho let out when he saw you in a face mask for the first time, and what kind of person still has their phone’s brightness turned up all the way before bed? But who else would willingly tolerate your deliriousness before your morning coffee or indulge in your pleas to cook your favorite food three days in a row?
Living with Minho has only made the purely platonic feelings you harbor for him grow stronger.
That’s what the fluttering in your chest means every time you see him, right? The reason for the smile that grows on your face when you hear the distinct jingling of keys at the front door?
Yeah, that must be why heat spread across your cheeks when he handed you his phone to text one of his friends back, because since when did the heart emoji make an appearance next to your pinned contact name?
You just care about each other, that’s all. It’s normal to want to make sure he arrived at work safely and ask how his day is going during your lunch breaks. It’s normal to start receiving back hugs before bed—a comforting weight as Minho’s chin rests on your shoulder while you apply the rest of the products to your face.
It’s natural to have doubts about the nature of your relationship during an evening walk, acutely aware of his fingers lightly brushing against yours as you silently study his features illuminated by the soft glow of the scattered streetlights. What if he meets someone else and falls in love with them and wants a divorce and– oh.
Has he always looked at you like that? With his gaze softening as it locks with yours? With the corners of lips lifting into the gentlest smile you’ve ever seen? With all the stars shining above you finding a second home in his eyes? A look so loving that it takes your breath away and you can’t tell if you’re about to laugh or cry in relief.
And when you return home to get ready for bed, the familiar feeling of hands wrapping around your waist and a careful pressure resting by the crook of your neck quells the remnants of your worries.
It’s you and Minho. Minho and you, just as it always has been. Just as it’s always meant to be.
The distance between your bodies on the bed becomes nonexistent when you curl yourself into his side, laying your head on his shoulder and intertwining your legs with his as he immediately, unhesitantly, adjusts his arm, his fingertips finding purchase on exposed skin and roaming across the span of your back. A kiss to the top of your head is the last thing you feel before the gentle lull of breathing and the rise and fall of his chest begin to soothe you to sleep.
…
Ah, marriage—what an interesting concept. Two people agreeing to sign a legal document and tethering their lives to each other for whatever reason, be it love, societal expectations, familial pressure, financial security, etc.
You love your husband, and you’re beginning to think he loves you too.
