Why Kuina’s Death Still Unsettles Us?

TW: mention of suicide, references teen/child suicide.

[I read a post about "falling down the stairs" might actually imply death by suicide. Kuina's death always bothered me a bit, and when Shimotsuki Koushiro said to Zoro, humans are fragile, did he really mean our bodies or our hearts? I still wonder. A few months back I had written a fic, a retelling of the events which led to Kuina's fall from the stairs, and I had done a lot of thinking while writing the fic. So all those ideas and thoughts I had then, have been rearranged and put here today.]

I remember watching the Kuina episode like 19 years back. So for an 11-year-old me, that was it. I was sad that she was gone too soon.

But over the years as I grew up, read the manga and then kept rereading it over and over. I did feel her death was surprisingly given the off-stage treatment that was given to Lady Macbeth! Only an announcement was made of her death, and her face is covered in a piece of cloth! That was too sudden, unlike so many other deaths that followed in the story.

I did brainstorm this over the years, it really felt odd, she was a physically strong 12-year-old girl and as far as I know swordswoman/man have to be good at balancing and footwork, because the art of the sword is about full body movement so her falling down is really really really iffy.

And if we look at the Dojo architecture, there were no visible storeys to the building, I am sure she didn’t fall off a library step-stool or carpenter’s ladder. Then I found this Tumblr post, by Heeheemugee which said, falling down the stairs is a euphemism for suicide. Which makes sense! Like it totally connects in my head.

Though, sadly, I didn’t find any source to confirm this, as everyone on the internet told me it's untrue. But, you see, “falling down the stairs” is a euphemism which has been used for domestic violence victims, like in my mother tongue, when it's hard to explain to a child what happened to someone who died, we say the person has gone somewhere far, so may be falling down the stairs is more of an undocumented euphemism or an old reference Odachii picked from somewhere— he is known for this!

Another thing we should remember Kuina was onset of puberty, the stress of future, her father’s general view of female body being weaker, and changing bodily features might have plagued her more than we think— since after 1000 chapters we know Zoro’s teacher is likely from Wano, I think internalized and cultural misogyny was at play too.

Teenage and puberty is a vulnerable time, one misstep can lead to drastic actions, so Kuina taking her own life is not farfetched. Because we have young children who are so stressed or vulnerable or suffering that they think ending it is better than enduring it.

What has bothered me the most, is the offstage treatment of her death. I mean—we have seen most of the “characters whose death impacted the main characters' life decisions” die on stage in backstories so far, or we got a proper explanation of why someone is dead. We know Banchina died after an illness, Bellemere was killed by Arlong, Hililuk was poisoned and blew himself up. Only Kuina’s death we didn’t see, and it immediately happened just after both Zoro and Kuina had a heartfelt conversation about becoming the best swordsman/woman in the world!

I guess Oda chose “fell down the stairs” as the series was like 15 chapters till then. Or it maybe as simple as Odachii wanted to wrap Zoro’s backstory fast with typical “dead girl-friend of the grumpy emotionally suppressed lone wolf” to establish Zoro’s narrative as the one who carries the will of others!

Otherwise, we know Eiichiro Oda doesn’t shy away from depicting gruesome, terrifying or horrible deaths which parallels real life issues, he sneaked in a little panel of a grandmother praying and a mother holding a knife with an infant in her arms in Wano arc, because they were starving for days!

Hence, I think Kuina’s death doesn’t seem like an accident and feel like something sadder and heavier than we were led to believe.

The straw hats recently made it to this island while exploring the grand line. As per usual sanji was making his rounds to buy more food for their long journey.

While walking around the island in search of different food stands he comes across a single apple tree. I'm sure the owner won't mind if I take a few! He thinks to himself, walking towards the tree.

He starts to pick a few apples putting them in his basket when he hears a sigh coming from the other side of the tree. He looks around to see a gorgeous lady trying to grab a apple that was just a little to high for her to reach.

He stares for a moment taking in the gorgeous sight in front of him before shaking his head and helping the lady. "Here! Let me!" he says grabbing the apple and reaching his hand out to give it to her. "Oh! Thank you!" you say happily excepting the apple from his hand.

You take a closer look at him since he doesn't look familiar. He feels his cheeks starting to get warm as you scan him. "You're not from here are you?" you finally ask. "No- No I'm not. Im here picking up food for my crew!" he says anxiously.

You give him a warm welcoming smile. "I see! I hope you enjoy your stay! This tree isn't owned by anyone so you're free to take as many as you would like! Need help?" you ask putting down your basket.

Sanji feels his heart race seeing your beautiful smile. As if your face could get any prettier. That smile proved him to be wrong. It most certainly can.

"Sure! I would appreciate that..." he says scratching his neck. (You're making bro nervous 😟) you nod and start picking apples and putting them in his basket. While doing so you both finally exchange names.

"So Sanji..." you say making his spine shiver hearing his name roll of your tongue. Something he wish he could hear 1,000 more times.

"Are you the chef?" you ask. "Yeah I am. Why?" he asks. "Well I'm guessing you're a pirate then right? Taking these apples like this on sea. They will go bad very quickly. I can show you how to make them into apple sauce and then how to can them. They will last way longer. Plus it's delicious!" you explain.

Sanji thinks for a moment. She's right. These apples won't last long. And I get to see her longer.... "Ok! Sure!" he says excited to learn.

You smile and grab your basket. "Great! I'll show you the way to my house and we can start!" you say grabbing his hand to show him the way.

Sanji nearly jumps out of his skin feeling you grab him like that. You're hand is so soft and small against his. (I got big hands😞) He never wanted you to let go. He wants to stay like this forever.

As y'all walk down the street y'all talking more about canning sorta going over how it will happen. You see sanjis forehead sweating in result of the sun beating down on y'all. You suddenly stop catching sanji off guard as he turns around to see why you place your hat on his head.

"You need it more then I do!" you say before continuing down the path. Sanjis cheeks go red at your sudden act. How sweet he thinks. Y'all arrive at your house and you start to show him how it works.

Once y'all are finished he tastes the apple sauce. To his surprise it was amazing. "Holy crap! This is amazing y/n!" he nearly yells. You laugh at his reaction. "Oh stop it's just a simple apple sauce nothing crazy. But now that you know how to make it. It should help your crews food last longer!" you respond.

You put the apple sauce into jars so they are easier to store. As you turn around to hand him the case of jars you notice he has apple sauce on his upper lip. You put the jars down while laughing and quickly wet a rag.

Sanji turns his head. Confused at what you're doing. "What is it?" he asks. You continue laughing while making your way back towards him with the wet rag. "You have some apple sauce on your face. Here." you say before grabbing his face with one hand and wiping it with the other.

Sanji starts to have a overload while you do this. Blushing like crazy until his nose starts bleeding. "Oh no. Are you ok???" you ask scared as the blood starts pooling out of his nose he take the rag from your hand and nods embarrassed. "Y-yeah! This happens sometimes haha!" he yells trying to play it off.

You quickly grab a first aid kit. "At least let me patch your nose." you say taking out some supplies. You try to walk over to him but he quickly jumps back. "No no. Don't come any closer y/n." he says panicking.

Y/n gives him a confused look. "But why I just want to help? Did I do something?" you ask.

"No! Well yes.... But no! It's just.... You're making me flustered y/n and it makes my nose bleed.... Sorry" he admits. You continue to look at him confused. Flustered? But why....

"How do I make you flustered? I haven't done anything..." you ask. Sanji sighs at your cluelessness.

You slowly make you way over to him. Putting two pieces of tissue in his nose and wrapping under it so it stays. You tell him your done and he opens his eyes. Before you can say anything he leans in and kisses you.

He suddenly puts you down getting serious. "Theirs one more thing I have to know y/n before you come with me..." he says looking at the ground. "Will you be my girlfriend?" he asks smiling at you.

You throw your arms around him and place a kiss on his cheek. "Of course I will!" you nearly yell.

The crew tried giving him a bunch of blankets putting him next to fire but he would always complain about the cold unless y/n was there with him.

I feel like he would also just come into your room randomly when he's bored and just lay on you. Full starfish. Covering you completely cause he can't read a room and understand you're busy. So you might be doing something while on your bed and then the door will just open and without a word being said bros laying down. Just chillin.

Zoro

Now we all know zoro loves his naps and will do that crap anywhere. And you just can't stand to see that man rest his head on some hard ass wood floor. It's Makes you cringe. Like that shit gotta be uncomfortable... So one day he was laying next to you and you got tired of seeing that crap. And you don't say anything you just sigh and lift his head up and move your thigh/leg under him. He opens his eyes for a second surprised but he soon goes back sleep. Not saying anything, but is grateful for the pillow.

And from then on y'all never spoke about it. It was just something y'all did. Everytime he would want to take a nap and you were sitting down he would just walk over and lay his head on you. No words exchanged. But he did enjoy it. And he would never admit it but he took really good naps when laying on you. And everytime he would try to sleep on the floor he would struggle to fall asleep cause he was used to you.

And yes he could easily just grab a pillow. But nah... He chooses you.

And this might be stretching but if he ever has a night mare or can't sleep he would come to your room. Opening the door. Looking stressed out or sweating and that's all you needed to know. Even though he usually sleeps for a long time whenever he would sleep in your bed at night he would never be there in the morning. He would always wake up before you. Not because he didn't like you or something but because he wants to respect your space as much as possible. And also I don't think he would want the crew to find out cause they might want to talk about it. But he knows with you, that your want push it and he just enjoys having someone there.

Though one night when he seemed stressed and came in there you said "wanna talk about it? I'll listen."

After being silent for a bit he responds "This is enough. Thank you... Y/n"

And you just hum In response. Zoro might be a man of few words but you knew he needed rest and you understood him and understood he might not want to talk about it but still wants to be comforted.

I might go as far and say you're the only person on the crew that has seen zoro cry cause one night he came into your room with tears running down his face. His eyes wide. Yet his face expressionless. Coming to you cause you're the only person that knew about his nightmares. Immediately understanding he had a really bad nightmare. Saying "I'm sorry dear..." getting up from your bed and giving him a hug which he surprisingly excepted hugging you tightly back and shuttering a bit before you pat his back.

Zoro not really being a fan of physical affection like hugs but in that moment and with you he needed it and was ok with it...

"Come. Rest now" you say before sitting down on your bed again. Him not saying anything only the sound of sniffles before it goes quiet meaning he fell asleep.

Shit I'm going to hell for that one. THAT WAS SAD. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO WHOLESOME. It just kept coming. My fingers just kept going y'all. I just had to keep adding on huh.

Nami

I just know Nami loves you. You're her best friend. If y'all share a room like her and robin do she definitely shares a bed with you and will ask you to cuddle all the time if not every single night.

I also think we would just do it when he's tired. Like he just got done fixing something with the ship and sees you. Giving you a nod before walking over and giving you a tired hug.

Or y'all will just be standing somewhere beside each other and he will throw his arm around you. Swaying a bit.

Sanji

Now it's not like it's a secret everyone on the crew likes your hugs so it's a known thing for them that you will always hug them. And sanji took that crap to his advantage.

Nami and robin never let him hug them cause of his weird ways but he knows you won't turn him down. So everytime you return back to the ship or even just walking into the kitchen for breakfast he can't help but stop whatever he's doing and running towards you with open arms. "Y/n my loveeee! Good morning!" "Y/n! My angel you're back!"

A few times even knocking you back cause he was so excited.

He would never touch you in a weird way though. And the first time he hugged you he asked to and you said he didn't have to ask that it didn't bother you. So he won't ever take that for granted. He might be a perv but he's still a gentleman.

When you return back to the boat after shopping he would always be the first to greet you. Not even waiting for you to get on the ship. He just jumps onto the ground and runs towards you. (Slowing down right before y'all hug so he doesn't hurt you) Offering to carry whatever you’re carrying then talking excitedly about what he had made for her or what he planned to make.

Chopper

Chopper is a lot like luffy. He's very grabby. Except he can't stretch so instead he will either raise his arms up to be picked up or will just climb up you like a mountain.

Sitting on your shoulders as you work. Sometimes sitting in your lap taking a nap as you work.

Chopper would also ask if he can sleep with you sometimes. He didn't really have a excuse. He just liked it. He would try his best to make one up though!

Especially during the winter. It would just be you chopper and luffy sometimes at night cause they are both cold and apparently you ar the only think that helps.

Robin

I don't think robin is big on physical contact but she still finds a sense of comfort being around. Even if it just the two of you reading beside each other, yalls shoulders touching, you resting your head on her leg as she reads to you or maybe the other way around. She enjoyed the small things.

And though they might not be a big deal or very obvious she still likes them and looks forward to yalls reading time.

Franky

Now I just know Franky likes to cuddle. Can't tell me different. Physical contact and spending time together is his love language

He loves when you ask him about something he's working on in his shop cause he will happily sit down in his rolling chair and let you sit on his lap and he explains everything.

Also Franky just really likes carrying people. He likes being helpful. So he will always offer to carry you. And if you say yes he would carry you in one arm/hand or let you sit on his shoulder.

I think he would just want to hug you like a teddy bear. Franky is a older man so if you joined the crew in your teens or as a early adult I bet he would start calling you bear, little bear, T bear. I think he would have a few silly pet name he called the crew at times.

Also he is mostly metal so I know he gets cold easily.

Brook

Brook would feel really awkward about hugging you are first I think. Not only cause you're a pretty girl but because well.... Their's not much for you to hug

Jinbei

Ren quickly stands up from her chair at hearing that. "If your not gonna buy anything then you can't stay buddy! This is a bar not a hotel!" she explains, walking towards the man while pointing at the door. The man scoffs and pushes past her. Ignoring her protests.

He makes his way over to shanks table slamming his hands down to get his attention. "So you're shanks huh? You don't look threatening at all! How the hell is your bounty so high?" he chuckles.

When suddenly you barge in out of breath nearly falling over at the sudden stop. "I'm so sorry I'm late ren- HOLY SHIT!"

You gather yourself, standing up straight to look around st the mess he made. "Who the hell do you think you are messing up my bar like this?!" you scream walking over towards the man.

He wasn't the biggest and certainly not the smartest.

You charge at the man, lifting up your fist and swinging. Nailing him right in the head. The man falls on his knee grabbing his head. "Don't you ignore me you bastard! I work to hard for this bar for it to be made a fool of by some damn pirate. If you wanna be a pirate so bad then maybe you at least have a bounty. Why don't I turn your ass in and fix up my bar huh?" you exclaim, pushing his head into the ground with one hand and holding his hands behind his back with the other.

You flip the tables and chairs back over. Only a few being damaged. Fixing shanks table you see that the chair he was using is broke. "Damn! Sorry about that I'll get you a new chair." you say picking it up. Shanks shakes his head. "That's alright I can sit at the bar. You don't need any more work then you're already doing anyways!" he smiles.

"No it's alright I don't mind!" you say quickly walking away to grab him a new chair before he can protest. He sighs, still feeling bad about the mess he somewhat caused. You put down two chairs in front of him. "Their we are! I only seen one by the table so I brought another in case someone else was sitting here with ya!" you explain.

Luffys waits not so patiently as sanji cooks lunch #3. Clenching his teeth and licking his lips. So desperately hungry. Y/n watches from their chair as he glares at the pan his soon to be lunch is in. They can't help but giggle seeing him so riled up.

Sanji finally serves Luffy his lunch but with in seconds the large meal is gone. "More please!" he says rubbing his belly. Sanji sighs and picks up the plates. "You're appetite is getting harder and harder to keep up with Luffy!" he chuckles.

Y/n stands up from their chair to help pick up the remaining plates. They watch as sanji clenches his teeth and rubs his head. "Are you alright Sanji? You look a little pale!" they say giving him a concerned look.

He sighs and puts the plates on the counter. "I'm not sure....My heads pounding!" he groans, closing his eyes and rubbing his forehead once again. "Why don't you go see chopper? Luffy can wait for lunch #4!" y/n says putting the rest of the plates down.

They start to push him towards the kitchen door. "Alright alright. I'll be back in 30 at the most!" he grumbles walking out of the kitchen.

Within a few seconds Luffy starts to groan. "I'm hungryyyyyyy. How much longer till 30 minutes is overrrrr??"

Y/n shakes their head and chuckles. "Well seeing as he just walked out the door id say it's gonna be a while!" They make their way towards the kitchen. Thinking about washing the dishes to help sanji. "Meatttt. I need meat!..." Luffy groans slamming his face on the table.

Y/n sighs. "Give me a moment and I'll see what I can fix up for you alright?" she smiles, putting the plates in the sink. Luffy perks up immediately. "Really! Alright!"

Y/n thinks about what to make. It needs to be something quick and easy yet filling... They ponder for a moment before coming to a idea. Beignets!

They quickly get out the ingredients to make their dough before getting out a large pot and filling it with oil. While the oil heats up they start to make their dough.

After frying the dough they fill the inside with chocolate sauce and sprinkle powdered sugar over the top. They look proudly at their beautiful dish.

"Ok Luffy close your eyes!" they say excitedly. Luffy obeys and shuts his eyes. Holding his fork and knife in his hand with a huge smile on his face. Y/n places the plate in front of him. "Ok open!"

Luffy opens his eyes and looks down. His mouth drops open, eyes going wide. "You made this y/n!?" he says smiling. They nod and watch as he picks up one taking a big bite.

Luffy feels like his body is melting. He has never ate something so delishes in his life. As he eats his food he keeps trying to talk with his mouth full. Y/n laughs as they watch him get powdered sugar all over his face.

The door suddenly opens to reveal sanji. "Sanji! How's your head?" y/n asks relieved to see he's ok. "Chopper gave me some medicine and said it was allergies! I'm feeling way better- wait. Did you make beignets? I never knew you cooked!" he says surprised.

"Yeah I did! Luffy was hungry so I decided to make something while you were gone! I'll clean up the kitchen though don't worry!" they say putting another plate of food down for Luffy.

"No that's alright! They smell wonderful! You'll have to teach me the recipe sometime!" he exclaims reaching for one off luffys plate.

Luffy quickly moves the plate. "Y/n made them for me so they are mine!" he mumbles. His mouth still full of food. Sanji grumbles "With the amount I cook for you, you could at least let me have one you jerk!"

Sanji continues to try and grab the plate but no matter where he went Luffy stretches his arms away until he eats the last one. Y/n laughs. "I'll make some more later so you and the crew can try some! But right now we need to sweep the floor cause y'all got powdered sugar every where slinging the plate around!" they laugh looking at the two men now covered in sugar.

What Zoro looks for in a partner head cannons!

Zoro is a very laid back, go with the flow type person. He doesn't like loudness. Enjoys his quiet/nap time. So he would probably like a partner that is the same way!

I'm not just talking about someone that is very quiet and introverted but someone that is sorta ya know "chill". Not always jump off the walls. Knows how to use their inside voice. Someone that is layed back.

Now for personality. Like being bold or shy. I think he would like both!

I think he would like a bold person that's sorta cocky like him. Someone that is confident and speaks their mind. He would find confidence very attractive! He likes it if you know your worth. Cause dating someone sorta seemed boring to him. But having someone just as cocky as him would have it to where y'all can compete in random stuff. Always having silly little arguments. Sorta like him and sanji. Just minus the wanting to kill each other. He wants someone that can keep him on his feet.

But at the same time I think he would like someone that is shy. He finds it cute. Not like "small uwu bean" shy 💀😭. Like someone that gets flustered easy or stutters sometimes. It gets on his nerves hearing people constantly complain about stuff that can be fixed easily. It's ok sometimes but constantly is a big no no.

I don't think looks matter to Geno's. Hear me out. I think he would like someone that's satisfyingly pleasing to look at. But that doesn't attractive. It could be something special about you. A gleem in your eyes, freckles, a crooked nose, a cool hair style, or just your overall aura.

Or being chubby :). I think Geno's would find a chubby/curvy partner elegant and pleasing to look at. He likes how soft and plush they look. Especially if you have chubby cheeks. I think he would find thoses adorable.

When it comes to what I think Geno's would look for in a partner I think more about personality then looks.

Cause he has a really good sense most of the time whether a person is bad or good.

Geno's starts walking beside you. "Um. May I ask why you're following me?" you ask confused. Geno's stays looking forward. "Its unsafe for a lady to walk home by herself at a hour like this. I'm heading this way anyways." he says making a excuse to see you longer.

"I see. Well thank you." you hum.

After you and genos arrive at your house he takes his leave. Not saying much. After that you and him started running into each other more often. Talking more each time. Soon be coming friends.

Geno's love language would be quality time or acts of service. He likes have your presence near him. Even if y'all are talking. Or when you do small acts of kindness for him.

Your presence is something he craves so much. How it's warm and welcoming. He can't get enough of it. After a long day of Patroling nothing is more relaxing then coming home to be around you. Cause right when he opens the door to come in this comforting aura just swallows him whole.
