i know im not alone on this but i also know this statement is like waving a stick at a hornets nest. my overall memories and nostalgia related to hetalia are generally not bad and i think it may have saved a depression-riddled middle school aged me from being lured towards way darker and more mentally damaging content or online groups

Welcome one and all, to the most ambitious tournament probably so far (that is to say, I chose way too many characters but in my defense I had found a blank template for a smash bros character roster thing and wanted to fill the whole thing up, even if I had to turn to the dark side to do so for one or two picks): The 2023 Himboff!

Round 1 Part 1 will begin on Friday, hopefully giving everyone enough time to prepare themselves for battle (I describe this as if it's a war and not a tumblr pollnament-).

Hello how are you,

You said you follow a lot of series. What other series are you into? What series of manga do you have? And which series are you willing to experiment with?

This one took me a while lol, but I have been collecting my series for over 20 years now so I guess that's understandable.

For the shipping game: DenEst and SweEst <33

We're off to an amazing start

SweEst

SweEst is one of my favorite ships in the entire fandom. For one, there is lots of historical backing to it - Sweden was once the empire that ruled over Livonia (some of modern day Latvia and all of modern day Estonia) and compared to the other powers that controlled the area, Sweden was pretty relaxed when it came to governing. Sweden was, generally, quite kind to Estonians, advocated for opportunities to have the population educated, and even allowed them to keep their folk beliefs instead of forcing them to convert to Christianity. In the grand scheme of things, a lot of Estonians don't consider Sweden's rule colonization, and it's a generally agreed upon fact that the Swedish Era in Estonia was the good era. Later, Swedes also supported Estonia's bid for independence and around 1000 (I believe) volunteers ditched their country to go fight Russians in Estonia in the 1910s. They remain good friends to this day, diplomatically, too.

In terms of hetalia, I view their relationship as one that's VERY slow to form. Initially, Sweden was uninterested in befriending Estonia, only communicating the fact he was the better option in comparison to the Teutons, Russia, and Denmark. He wanted Eduard to understand that so that he could govern him without hiccups. If Estonia knew he was the best choice, then maybe he wouldn't be as violently resistant to him as he was to everyone else.

I imagine things started to change about 2/3 of the way through the swedish era, when Sweden began to pursue a genuine friendship with Eduard. That was unheard-of (in my hcs) by that point, as Sweden's only real mission was to subdue those his crown told him to, and Estonia would have been one of them. He placed value and worth on nations based on their power, and, of course, being controlled by someone his entire life, Eduard had very little of it. But what he lacked in strength, he made up for in sheer tenacity and power of will, which eventually swooned Sweden, which Sweden wasn't expecting at all. The fact that someone had been able to "seduce" (seduce used lightly here, Eduard was being an asshole and Bernhard just went "omg so dreamy" bc he's AN IDIOT) him and not the other way around really caught him off guard.

He didn't pursue anything, of course. He was too busy, and Eduard was practically a feral cat. Sure, he'd come home to eat, but get too close and he'd run; touch him, and you'll probably contract rabies from the bite. Not only that, but very soon after Ber decided he wanted to kiss this man and stare longingly into his eyes... He lost him. To Russia. And immediately was barred from seeing him. I imagine Russia wouldn't have wanted Sweden, whose rule was very obviously preferred to his by Estonians, to speak to him, lest he inspire a rebellion. The only way they maintained contact was bc Finland decided he cared more about Eduard and his mental health than he did about his hate for Sweden, and he helped smuggle in letters that Sweden wrote. He knew it kept Estonia and Latvia's spirits up.

They probably wouldn't have gotten together until the modern day, if at all. It's honestly equally likely to me that ber is just too afraid to lose Eduard's friendship and keep quiet about his feelings as it is that he took a chance and started a relationship with him.

Either way, Eduard is just COMPLETELY caught off guard. "Me?? ME?? Why!" He doesn't get it. Ber is far more conventionally attractive than Eduard is, plus is tall, with the strong silent schtick that makes people lose it, AND he's a sweet and attentive father who loves and gets along with kids. He's got all these interesting hobbies and interests, and has amazing life stories to tell. Eduard really wouldn't think he's worthy of attention from someone like ber, and that ber is WAY out of his league. It would confuse him, but he obviously wouldn't be opposed to the idea of a relationship with him. He likes ber! He's been friends with the guy since the 16-ish00s. He knows him well. He's seen just how much he's grown as a person. He knows him, his motivations, his interests, and he knows enough to know that he would probably do well in a relationship with him. He's very analytical about the whole thing, because he doesn't want to leap into something just for it to go badly and ruin one of his closest friendships.

I think the relationship would go pretty slowly because of this. For Eduard it's a matter of experimentation and for Ber, it's a matter of keeping Eduard comfortable. He does not wanna step on his toes.

I have a confession to make. I've never offered this ship more than 2 of my brain cells until now. Mostly bc, hot take, I'm not super into Denmark. He's fine! He's silly and cute in an annoying big brother kind of way

But this ship almost veers toward "you can see what A likes about B, but not so much what B likes about A."

In my mind, Denmark is immature. Well meaning, yes, but immature. The way I tend to characterize Eduard, is as a very mature person. He had to grow up way too fast because he was constantly being picked on, targeted, and fought over by nations two, three, four times his size. Denmark being one of them, albeit much further back than Sweden and other nations. It was Denmark that Estonia led an uprising against, with the full intention to just kill anyone they caught (St. George's Night Uprising). Denmark wasn't kind to Eduard when he owned his territory and subjugated him. BUT Denmark was stupid and young at this point, fresh out of the Viking era, where violence was how problems were solved. It could easily be said that Denmark learned a lot from his time ruling over Livonia, and it is most definitely true that he chilled out a LOT as time went on.

Denmark can be an idiot. He's impulsive. He's a little absent-minded, and can be over-excitable. But one thing he is not, is malicious. In fact, he's likely the most outwardly kind and affectionate out of the Nordics, excluding Finland. He is soft-hearted and kind, and he cares very much about the people around him.

Some of the ideas a friend (@hetaestoniahq) has shared with me revolve around Eduard in the 90s. If you're unaware, Estonia struggled a lot in the 90s. Being released from a horrific dictatorship that repeatedly tried to demolish your people's spirit in the WORST ways will do that to.

According to his hcs, Denmark was one of the nations who regularly kept contact with, checked on, and spent time with Eduard after he was granted independence. This stems from the fact that Denmark was one of the 1st countries to re-establish diplomatic ties with Estonia, if not the first. Denmark also sent volunteers to aid Estonia in their war of independence, like Sweden and Finland did.

He tried to make sure that Eduard was staying healthy, building healthy habits, and taking care of himself. Obviously this would have been a struggle, but Denmark would have done his absolute best, because Estonia was a friend of his, and he never lets his friends down, if ever he can help it.

And honestly, it would have just gone from there. It's a very soft and wholesome ship, I totally understand why all 5 people who ship this like it as much as they do.

From playing your HetaOni, I was able to tell how incredibly charming and personal it is. Even with it's imperfections, it helped secured its identity as a love letter project and that everything does not have to be super polished or professional, but rather personal and community-made, just like the fandom. To me, your work is absolutely monumental to the community and its history, and you help gave closure to what the original game could never complete. Once more, thank you so, so much.

Does anyone have the most random headcanons or au's for characters they like, even with little to no reason to have them? I never know if they come to me in a dream, if I get bored too easily and start imagining things, or am combining fandoms without realizing it (sometimes I imagine my fav characters as musicians because I'm a musician and am biased haha)

Here are a few of my random hc/au's for some characters (I'll try my best to supply any logic I might have, but again, these are mostly unrelated to their fandoms)

•Link (LoZ: Twilight Princess) is a bookworm and loves to read in his treehouse when relaxing (he just seems like an introvert who would like reading)

•Spongebob (Spongebob Squarepants) can actually cook other foods pretty well; he took culinary courses in college (Patrick went to community college, so maybe Spongebob did too; some episodes portray Spongebob as only being able to make krabby patties, but he cooks other things at home multiple times)

•Nico di Angelo (Percy Jackson series) grew up around classical music and playing piano and/or violin and is rediscovering his love of music in Camp Half-Blood, maybe even composing a little (his father loves music (the myth of Orpheus), so maybe he encouraged music in his children; classical music is for everyone, but is often common among the upper class; I've seen people headcanon Maria di Angelo as being an opera singer)

•Link (LoZ: Skyward Sword) had a crush on Pipit when he was younger (Link being the protagonist means we as players can sort of decide parts of his personality; Link gives me bi/pan vibes; Pipit is attractive, kind, and brave, so who wouldn't like him)

•Yuki Sōma (Fruits Basket) plays guitar (electric and acoustic) and enjoys rock music. He also starts to dress very casually in grunge/punk clothes (I imagine that he starts to get into his preferred hobbies more with the help of his friends; he rebels against his family's strict and traditional values and also against his perfect and "princely" features and reputation at school)

•Spain/Antonio Fernandez Carriedo (Hetalia) is a scientist/really into science, and is very good at it/intelligent (could be any kind, but I often imagine him as a physicist, no particular reason; science and logic are often put first in many Spanish-speaking countries; the main reason for Spain being a scientist in my head is because I always see him portrayed as a himbo, dense, dumbass, etc. mainly in FanFiction and I feel bad, and I'm a bit annoyed at the flanderization of Hetalia characters; other "stupid" nations are sometimes portrayed as secretly smart (N. Italy, America, Prussia), but I never see it for Spain)

•England/Arthur Kirkland (Hetalia) plays saxophone (literally no reason at all, I can't explain why; I once imagined America constantly asking England to play Tequila or Careless Whisper and thought it was funny)

What an interesting three-of-a-kind. Let's look at it closer:

The first photo: a russian artist with an interesting nickname. If you transcribe it on russian Cyrillic and then go back to English, it turns out to be "moscow police." Let me remind you that moscow police is not only participating in killing, raping and torturing Ukrainians, Belaruthians, Qazaqs, Crimean Tatars, and other people who are not "Great Arian Russian", but are also the same people who kill and torture average russians, whom Americans care so much for, as well. Just like in the teract in Krokus City Hall. The moscow police is the organisation that works directly for putin and kremlin. It's like being a German artist during WW2 and having a nickname Schutzstaffel. Although I doubt people in hetalia even know what this word means because they are not interested in studying history, after all.

The more I am here, the more I believe such a kind of artist is just paid by russia to draw this bullshit. And people who share this - yeah, it's about 50-100 of them, but they are all the same faces, every time. Seems like there's an organised community that brings confusion to other people and spreads disgraceful and dangerous ideas about my long-suffering people and land. That's a thing I wish Tumblr staff paid closer attention to. I would not be surprised if the artists who promote russia here actually work for KGB (officially FSB, but it's just the renamed CSS).

And these are the remains of a missile. In russian Cyrillic, it is written "for Krokus City Hall". A teract there was organised by.... moscow police! And some ISIS and Hamas representatives, whom moscow police carefully helped to leave the crime scene.

Second art - also russian artist (who could have thought!). They call Belarus (and, apparently, Ukraine... or maybe even all former soviet union states) "Russia's family". Belarus is holding a book "1000 and 1 reason to love the brother". Laughing out loud. Belarus never was russia's sibling, and moreover, it never loved russia. Belarus hates russia more than Lithuanians and Ukrainians hate it altogether. They just can't say it outloud. Yet.

You know? Such kind of art makes Belaruthians feel unsafe. That's why there are so many russians drawing our land and claiming we are their siblings who love them. Belaruthians just avoid anything that makes them feel unsafe. Too many Belaruthians were killed already. Belaruthians and their families are being persecuted all over the world for speaking Belaruthian language, for wearing white-red-white stuff, for making art in Belaruthian language. We feel in danger - and this website, especially this fandom with the tag of our own fucking country, doesn't help us feel safer.

Russians murdered about 60%, if not more, of all the people of Belarus, including Litvaks, especially Litvaks, just during the soviet union. Nowadays, russia doesn't want Belarus to exist either - thus, the russian artists like the fairytale about Belarus loving and wanting to unite with russia.

One day, prorussian propaganda will be condemned the same way we condemn nazis. One day, this becomes true.

Third art - the artist is... no, not russian. Chinese! What a poor dude, I feel nothing but pity, really. "Ivan is terrified" - good! :D Finally, some nice fucking art. /sarcasm. This dude is doing a great job in presenting their country as a country of uneducated idiots. The tendency is concerning.

I wish all the prorussian artists in hetalia "to taste their own medicine". To have nightmares for years. To be scared for your loved ones every single day. To lose hair, weight, and teeth. To not feel safe ANYWHERE. To see your close ones falling into depression and be able to do nothing about it. To lose your home. Your pets. Your plants. Your plans. Your friends. Especially I want this for Hidekaz Himaruya.

Henlo! You rebloged my post about France in fanfiction and I wanted to reply to it because I found what you said interesting, but because you used just tags would be goofy to reblog it again so I am sending an ask!

I agree about the cannon not helping, the thing is France got better in the cannon, he is more interesting now. I am not very into Prussia so I don't remember if he got better in later parts. But this thing about him being the worst in PruCan fanfic isn't something I noticed in Brazilian Fanfics or maybe I just don't remember lol

I wrote my post at 1 AM and now I stopped to think about what annoys me about how simple and awful Francis' characterization is and I noticed that it simply doesn't have a reason. When I was writing my fic, I wanted to make him bad in a European kind of way, he is France, France really did a lot of shit, he is kind of goofy and useless now? Yes, but that wasn't the case in the Early Modern era.

I also never saw no one exploring his sexuality. Why is Francis overly sexual? Why is he so dramatic? Why is he always trying to get in someone's pants? Real people have reasons to act overly sexual, they aren't just born this way, but WHY I NEVER SEE NO ONE ASKING THOSE QUESTIONS??

Hiii! First, I adore your blog. Thank you for introducing me to the world of TurkFra. My eyes have been opened and my mind widened.

I almost think the fandom needed to go through the "dark times" or "dark age" of character interpretation to get where we are now. I know there was for sure a shift happing when I dipped out of the fandom in 2016ish. And when I started occasionally reading fanfics again during lockdown I was blown away with the shifts regarding the characterization of nearly all the characters.

Totally agree with you 100% about interpreting a character like France in a way where he is bad shit person, because of the actual actions of France. Imo its really important to include things like that into every nations characterizing when engaging in more "real life inspired" characterization. Almost have to wonder if the rise in popularity of historical hetalia has had anything to do with this change. While it was sorta a thing in the early years of the fandom, it didn't really seem to have much of a collective following and community. And now it seems that characters of empires/colonists like France/England/America/Russia etc. have shifted away from being written to have very goofy and comically negative traits more in-line with the 2008-2012ish canon to having their negative traits rooted more in the real-life negative habits or traits of the real world nations. I'd also wonder if the average age in the fandom has gone up which has helped characters simply be better developed.

The "bad touch trio" was super common back in the day. It was France/Prussia/Spain. Pretty much the entire characterization for them all ended up being sex addicts who went around well, SA or SH other nations. That mixed with the very silly "everything is based on basic national stereotypes" vibe of early canon I think just made i so a character like France ("nation of love"/the idea that the French are much more sexually liberated then the English or Americans) was very one-sided even when other charters were getting a little bit better of treatment. I also always felt like France was never as popular in the American/English fandom as American and England. So he (and often Canada) would sorta just thrown into things without much development character-wise.

Hello, we're the Kazan World! We're an adaptive neurogenic system with a varying member count. Welcome to our blog! Our vision when starting this is to have a place to infodump about our system lore, and trust me, it goes deep.

To start, though, here's a simple introduction to who we are! We joined the plural community in November 29, 2020, though we've been a system for much longer. We'll go more in depth about our system origins at a later post. We're bodily 19, born in Brazil, transmasc, and collectively autistic with a special interest in geography.

We only include non-dormant members into our numbers count, though it typically varies somewhere between 15-50 active members. At the time of writing this post, our count is 18. We're introject-heavy and have members from various sources, mainly from anime. However, there are two groups you'll see most often: the host's family and our Hetalia introjects.

Host's family

(also sometimes known as Kazan Family)

Niko - (they/them): We call them the host, but our definition isn't the typical one. They're a personification of our collective identity/singletsona, and also serve as a leadership figure in our system. The rest of the family sorta branched out from that initial identity (though we don't consider ourselves median), and now are the younger siblings of the host.

Nile - (she/they): Niko's twin and a former persecutor. She formed in mid 2019 at a time when our body had depression, and regularly acted out against the system since then. They took some time in isolation and only formally rejoined our system at the start of this year.

Angel - (fluid pronouns): Caretaker and former protector. It followed a similar story as the above, though in different ways. Angel and Nile used to see each other as enemies, but now they've become much closer.

Migi - (she/they): Originated as a concept of right brain. She emerged in February 2020 along with Hidari, and has always been one of the most regularly active headmates. They used to be an emotion holder.

Hidari - (any pronouns): Emerged in February 2020 along with Migi, as the equivalent concept of left brain. She finds pleasure in performing tasks, following orders and helping the system with organization.

Mica - (they/them): Memorygenic, the youngest of the family, and a big fan of Undertale.

Isav - (he/him): Memorygenic and a former host. He helped kickstart our special interest back in April 2021, and became the host for a sidesystem that eventually overtook the main system. Also very homosexual.

I was playing World Tour and for some reason I never really put too much thought into my Avatar's voice, and who the ENG VA was.

And it got me thinking about the other Avatar's voices that made an appearance, and who they were. Surprisingly, I have heard the Eng VAs in different medias before.

This past year, I -

Suddenly rejoined the fandom on a whim after almost 10 years, and I couldn't be more delighted with the results of that random burst of nostalgic inspiration.

Made some lovely online friends whom I care for dearly

Rekindled an old hobby! Since February, I've written probably around 1 million words of Hetalia fanfiction. Like literally.

Was diagnosed with an incredibly rare neurological disorder, which is not fun to cope with, but tested negative for most common genetic blood cancers!

Improved my relationship with my husband. He's more helpful and respectful now.

Discovered new music and aesthetics

Got a reliable job that I can stand and bought a sick pair of Doc Martens

Got a haircut that made me feel like a whole new person and repierced my tongue. Feeling like my punky self again and not trying to force an image to fit in with others.

Completed a quarter of a century on Earth.

Unfortunately didn't move of my MIL's, but also didn't crash any cars or lose any pregnancies, or organs for that matter! So that's an improvement. The only way to go is up!

my biggest goal if I were to start it:

i love tumblr a lot, but it does lack in community building. and twitter/x has entered a highly uncertain future.

So scotpru (for me) started because of a gereng rp I did with a friend ages ago that had both Gilbert and Alasdair as characters.

Keep in mind I'm not much on the historical side of hetalia so I can't speak on reasons to ship them re: concrete historical potential trading or connections the people may have had.

BUT, that being said, when it comes to nationverse, Gilbert and Alasdair both are somewhat older nations who have seen and experienced a lot of the world. They have quite a rough (and often annoying) exterior to their younger brothers, but at the same time have a genuine and warmhearted love for certain cultural aspects that they cultivate and put pride in. Both share a love of handcrafted pieces, whether they're old engraved weapons or woodworked furniture or illuminated manuscripts, they put value in creating something yourself and putting in the time and effort to learn that skill.

In my eyes, they connect via old tales of the world and the other nations when they were younger, as well as clashing in the kitchen in a positive, poking fun kind of way. Scotland cooks more often, Prussia bakes more often (which Scotland doesn't complain about at all, who would when they're getting served sweets?)- though Scotland's cooking style is much messier and "intuition" based versus Prussia's meticulous recipe notes and measuring and cleaning practices. And oh, they love to work on projects together that can utilize both their strengths- it's kind of one of their love languages in a way.

Also, Scotland's voice matches Prussia's flute perfectly, and both of them adore hearing the other play. It's soothing. They love the outdoors and often go camping or out on daytrips into the countryside where no one else will hear them play together, like a personal little show they put on for their ears only.

Beyond concrete interests that are similar, Alasdair and Gil also seek out each other in the sense that, because they have these sorts of connections with each other, they can find comfort in each other. They know how the other grew up, they've seen them grow and change over the years. They don't have to put on the strong unaffected persona with each other when they're alone. Gilbert appreciates that Alasdair doesn't treat him any different after being dissolved- doesn't look at him with barely-held back pity and annoyance. And Scotland knows that despite being the eldest and supposedly having all his shit together, when he feels like everything is falling apart he can come to Gilbert, who will put aside his usually abrasive front to welcome Alasdair with open arms. They learn to open up emotionally and trust each other. Neither are the best with words, though Alasdair is worse imo, and so they're able to pick up on each other's nonverbal cues and signs of affection that others might not note. And I do just like Gilbert's explosive energy next to Alasdair's slightly more laid-back vibes.

I feel like it's one of those relationships where neither actually said "I love you" for a very long time, it was just mutually understood that they shared a bond with each other that they didn't feel with anyone else.

Humanverse and other aus have similar notes to them- in my mind they often meet at say, a bar or pub, or even perhaps at daycare while dropping of their siblings depending on the au, and begin connections through some mix of love of history, music, baking and cooking, crafting, and/or just the fact that both can often feel like outsiders in their current community, and said relations bloom from there.

I had an odd chance to kind of revisit the forum and my old Hetalia contents. And... I kind of like it. I like the community and friends I had back then. We drifted apart but at least a few still connected to me on fb. (One became my student that was really weird, but she graduated now.)

I also like myself back then. Even if there was a lot of cringe. I behave much more rashly, but with good intent and initiated things. I started conversations and all. And yeah I got a really good portion of the fandom, I guess. Everyone who talked to me on tumblr were very nice and mature. Even when I get things wrong or we disagree on a headcanon. Even on DA, people would comment and give information and help with my understanding of things. So I had such a good time being in the Hetalia fandom. It wasn't drama free, but it was good.

I like that how I write my thoughts about the things I draw. I write up my research all the time. while now, not only I barely draw anything. It takes forever for me to finish anything. And I don't even write about it. I wonder what happened. But maybe I will try to share more and draw and post things more.
