The print quality is beautiful and it includes WAY more than the 300 pieces of art they promised! I'm very very happy to own it and so grateful the exhibition made Shueisha get off their lazy butt to put this together.

As expected, the selection of art focuses largely on title pages. It includes almost all Narumi and Aira title pages, which is lovely, but there are a LOT of Ranze title pages missing, which I have to ascribe to the original manuscripts having been lost (like Ikeno has told her fans in private multiple times).

16 of the missing Ranze title pages were reprinted in the 1987 furoku "Memorial scene collection", so my theory is they were all lost in the process of printing this furoku, and the ch. 4 title page might have been lost when it was reprinted for the "Anime special issue" magazine. This would also explain why the Italian edition uses different cover art than the Japanese tankobon edition for volumes 2 and 9! I've been wondering about that for a while. If this is true, a ton of beautiful, wonderful art has been lost. :(

Other titles pages which were not included: Ranze ch. 1 (included in the Tokimeki manga-michi tankobon), ch. 21, ch. 22, and side story Christmas no okurimono (included in the Romantic Album fanbook); Narumi side story Ginga romance no yoru ch. 1; Aira ch. 20, Aira side story Poteto no Merry Christmas. Ribon covers which were not included: Aira cover of Ribon bikkuri zokan early spring 1993.

Of these I'm missing Ranze ch. 22 and Ginga romance no yoru ch. 1 in my collection, so I'll make it a priority to pick up the relevant magazines in the near future.

Other than that, there are six pages reprinting a more or less random selection of furoku art, a smattering of black and white manuscript pages, and three pages (one for each arc) reprinting preview illustrations, magazine spine illustrations, novelty phone card illustrations, and other rare and beautiful art, which might be some of my favorite pages of the whole book <3 I absolutely adore Ikeno's preview illustrations, so much cuteness and beauty crammed into such small spaces! These pages are a must see and must own for fans. The interview with Maki Yoko and Mochida Aki is fine, not particularly insightful but you can tell they're both genuine fans of Tokimeki and of Ikeno's art.

One glaring omission from this book (aside from the Ranze title pages) is the numerous rough sketches that were displayed at the Tokyo venue of the exhibition -- only five of them are reprinted here. Just more reason for people to go to the venues though, because holy molly those were absolutely amazing!!! I really hope they'll be displayed at the Kyoto venue too, so I can take pictures of every single one of them.

But all in all, this is a wonderful book. If you visit the exhibition, or if/when it goes on sale online, you should definitely pick it up -- it's a masterpiece of 80s and 90s shojo art!

Jameson walked towards the library, aware that Hannah was apparently in there. Dinner was almost ready, and since everybody’s families had decided to come to Hawthorne House over the weekend, we planned on eating meals together, especially dinner. Heading inside the library, he walked towards the desk that Hannah was always sketching at, and knocked on the desk to get her attention. She looked up, a bit startled, before realizing it was just him.

“Jeez Dad, you scared me.” She says, huffing. Jameson laughs before glancing down to the sketchbook in her hands. His smile grows as he goes to reach for the paper. “I was gonna call you down for dinner, but what’s this?” He asks, but before he can pick up the sketchbook, Hannah quickly yanks it away. “Nothing. I messed up anyway, so I’m just gonna throw it away.” She said, hiding the sketchbook from him. Jameson frowns. “Well, can I at least see it? I’m sure it’s amazing Han, I’ve seen your art and I know how good it is.” He says. She groans, and still doesn’t budge. Stubborn, Jameson thinks affectionately, Just like her mother. “Please Hannah?” He asks, his tone serious yet gentle. She gives him a look for exactly 4 seconds before sighing and giving in. “Fine. But just a quick look!” She demands, giving the sketchbook to him. Jameson takes it from her and sees the drawing, to which his jaw immediately drops.

It’s a photo—sorry,—sketch of Calla, Graysons daughter. She’s grinning into the imaginary camera and her eyes are sparkling. At first sight, it looks like Hannah had just printed out a photo of her, but the sketch marks say otherwise. Jameson struggled to see where she had “messed up”, and spent a couple more seconds obscurely analyzing the page for anything, to which he found nothing. There were some unfinished parts, like her hair and some of the shading on her face, but the drawing was absolutely remarkable in every way. He gaped at the drawing for about 20 seconds before Hannah yanked her sketchbook from his hands.

“I said a quick look!” She said, looking slightly embarrassed from Jamesons reaction to the drawing. “Hannah, please tell me you’re keeping that and framing it. It’s absolutely beautiful! How are you this talented?” He said staring at the drawing in her hands again. She looked down awkwardly. “Thanks Dad. It was supposed to be a gift for Callas birthday since it was soon, but no matter what I keep messing up, and it has to be perfect if I’m going to give it to her.” She says. The look on Jamesons face was utter and complete confusion. “This is perfect. Calla would love this! And I don’t even see where you ‘messed up’.” Jameson said, using air quotes on the last two words. Hannah sighs and points to the teeth on the drawing. “How? I messed up the teeth so many times that no matter how much I keep erasing, it just looks dark and weird. Also, the nose is smudged. How do you not see this?” She asks, looking at him as if he were the weird one. “First of all, the teeth don’t look weird at all. Second, even if you took a magnifying glass to that nose you would not see a single smudge. I’m serious Hannah, this is amazing. You have to give it to her.” He says, with no sign of budging. She sighs and stares at her work of art herself, biting her bottom lip in thought. There was a look on her face that said she’d seemed to consider giving the drawing to Calla, before it fades and she rips the drawing out of her sketchbook. She crumples it in her hands before throwing it in the trash, and Jameson gasps. “I’ll try again after dinner, I promise. Now let’s go.” She says, getting up out of her chair and walking away before Jameson could protest. Glancing at the trash bin, he fishes the drawing out of it and flattens it out on the desk.

“There,” He mutters, unable to stop staring at the piece of art. “Good as new.” He takes it with him to his room, which wasn’t too far from the library, and walked in. Opening the first drawer, he takes out the folder he had kept with all of Hannah’s “unwanted”, as she called it, art, and put the sketch inside. It hurt him to see Hannah be so hard on herself and beat herself up for tiny “mistakes” that only she notices. Jameson wished that she could see just how beautiful the art she made was, and how talented she is. Hopefully one day she will. But for now, Jameson thought, Instead of a frame, the folder will have to do.

You bring up a great point regarding Bowser, and I honestly think that both avenues could potentially work depending on how the scene occurs. I've discussed a few times before how genuinely attentive and affectionate my Bowser is with Junior despite how absolutely vile and devious he is towards everyone else, and what I like about that special exception is that it creates its very own dilemma within a pre-existing conflict. As much as Bowser hates Mario and wants him to suffer, he also loves his son and cares about his feelings. Regardless of what the outcome would be, emotional duality is a fantastic narrative element that suits Bowser quite well imo, and there's a lot that can be done with it. All I can say is I hope I'll find the time and motivation to draw the concept I have in mind one day. 🙇‍♀️

I'm dropping by to say that I am so in love with your xie lian and hua cheng designs! I'm fairly certain I originally followed you for your yuri on ice art, but I've fallen a bit back into mxtx's world recently and I've been obsessed with seeing one version of hualian that doesn't necessarily adhere to the book's standard of beauty. I've been showing your art to my partner and been unable to prevent myself from talking to her about the designs and why I like them. they're just so cool. I think once upon a time, mxtx said that xl and hc work so well together because they are both eccentric in one way to the extreme, and to me somehow that is especially conveyed in your versions of them. anyway! thank you for your art! *: ･ﾟ

yuri on ice is my absolute biggest comfort show so i am alwaysss happy to take fan art requests 🫶 but i can't get enough of hualian either haha!!! i'm so grateful you like their designs because i have so much fun drawing them! 🥺🥺

i have complete respect for the source material and at the same time don't find it very interesting to draw all of tgcf's characters with the same body types and skin tones 😅 i feel like the donghua has a similar issue where the protagonists are largely drawn pale and thin. personally i think it's a missed opportunity to tell a visual story with character design; although xie lian is canonically pale and dainty, i wanted to see what kind of visual cues give off certain traits! for example, i draw xl with eyebags for what i think are obvious reasons LOL.

A talented writer, one of my fav authors to read, period. When Ida starts writing, magic happens. Can also draw the cutest Stede and Ed as horses? 🤯 One of the most badass people on this side; at the same time one of the loveliest <3

@saltpepperbeard - Jodi Jodi <3 Reading her tags is like reading a good book. You never know what genre you'll get; if you'll end up laughing or crying; but you know either way it's gonna be so gooooood. (Also has the best freakouts about my Taika gifs, the highlight of my day ✌). I don't know her well (we should interact more Jodi ❤), but seems like such a delightful and fun person <3. Also makes insane gifs. Can hit you with the sweetest set that makes you smile, or will hit you with an agsty one making you cry, and her thematic/parallel sets are incredible and perfect.

@smoothedsmoothie - Morgan is such a friendly sweet soul. Very pleasant to talk to. And such an insanely talented artist? My jaw is still on the floor from how beautiful their art is.

@blakbonnet - Bonus mention; because we don't really interact much, but how I can not mention Meow? A LEGEND. The fandom wouldn't be the same without her. Ken calls me his "sweet, divine, beautiful girl" (while counting the adjectives on his fingers, for emphasis) but he says "sweet girl" for short. I got the idea because Margot Robbie said in a very early Barbie press interview "Ryan improvised a line during the 'sublime' scene where he instead shouted... what did he say? 'My sweet girl'!" and I thought to myself "ohhh that's so perfect!!!" I always love implementing nicknames with my main F/Os and making them special. I love "baby" "sweetheart" "darling" etc etc but I REALLY have such a soft spot for nicknames that F/Os would call me and nobody else, something that's personal to them, and vice versa. I thought it was perfect. I like the idea of Barbie calling me that too ;u; sounds so lovely in her voice.

But later when the behind the scenes footage was released in iMax theaters, the phrase he shouted was actually "my divine girl", not sweet girl like Margot had said. But I had gotten SO ATTACHED to being Ken's Sweet Girl™ for two months, I didn't want to change it, couldn't even consider it. I decided to just add to it... "sweet, divine" girl, but he'd still just say sweet girl most of the time for short. Problem solved. BUT THEN I had a dream shortly after, where he was teary-eyed, holding me, sobbing "my beautiful girl, my beautiful girl". And I woke up immediately fueled with the power of ten thousand suns saying "okay so I'm Ken's sweet, divine, beautiful girl. got it. got it. cool, coolcoolcool, so cool." We'll see if a fourth adjective comes into play someday 😂😂

YOU'RE SOOO RIGHT!!!! HE ABSOLUTELY DESERVES BOYFRIEND OF THE YEAR AWARD 🥺🥺🥺🥺 he and Barbie are solely responsible for all of the joy I have felt in the last few months when I have needed them both the most!!!
