☁️The heavens told me that clouds have been grey
yes that is from lady gaga's song hold my hand from tgm-
Here lies all of my icemav fics! So guaranteed smooches <3 (None of them link to each other unless they are in a seperate series btw)
Here is the big ol’ masterlist :)
Tumblr media
goose and slider forever judging them in the background
☁️There's a silver lining on every cloud 13k+
Rated Teen, and with copius amounts of fluff :3 A collection of various icemav kisses prompts from a tumblr post full of them
☁️Only One Bed (1076 words)
Rated Gen, emotional hurt/comfort Iceman and Maverick are on a mission of somesorts together, and they get put in a room which has, yep, you guessed it, only one bed. And Maverick has a nightmare.
☁️Sunset on the Field (1086 words)
Rated Gen, first kiss, a sunset, that's it. Maverick invites Iceman to sit on a field near a runway to watch the sunset and maybe stargaze, a thing friends do, right? And they both deny their plainly obvious feelings for the other until neither of them can bear it any longer…
☁️Smoke in the Air (735 words)
Rated Teen, with anxiety, and hurt/comfort They don’t tell Iceman that Maverick is missing in action. Kind of important information when you're in a hospital ward twelve hours after you're shot down.
☁️Warmth (1020 words)
Rated Teen, angst and hurt/comfort Maverick hates sleeping in the same bed as Ice. He also hates himself. Tonight makes it way worse.
☁️Blame (957 words)
Rated Teen, angsty thoughts and its a sickfic, so.. Maverick was sick. Not the little cough and blocked nose sick, but the feverous, restless sick that gives thumping headaches and coughs that give you chest ache.
☁️Missed You (2119 words)
Rated Teen, secret relationship, anxiety, mental and regular hospitals (i'm sorry Mav) An accident. Two injured pilots, a broken wrist on one, a fractured ankle and twisted shoulder on the other. A string of numbers. 225 63 2829
☁️Still by your Side (2006 words)
Rated Teen, angst, post-break up, hurt/comfort, injuries It's been a couple of months since Iceman and Maverick broke up. They're still wingmen, they still fly missions together. But it takes a bad landing from an ejection for them to realise that they still need each other. Inspired by this post , that broke me.
☁️Even Ice Melts (1927 words)
Rated Teen, angsT, grief, stormy night, post-argument, hurt comfort, good god this has it all. “No one will be there to mourn you when you crash and burn,” Ice hisses slowly. Oh how he hated Iceman. “Then let us hope I crash and burn tomorrow,” he says harshly, still somehow maintaining eye-contact with him.
☁️Starved (1825 words)
Rated Teen, hand-holding, emotional hurt comfort, mutual pining sort of at the end... Maverick is touch-starved. He doesn't know it. Nobody else knows it. Nobody else except for Iceman. Of course he had to notice. And despite them being rivals, Ice plucks up the courage to offer Maverick a seat in the next lesson.
☁️Boys Don't Cry (1921 words)
Rated Teen, fluff, emotional hurt/comfort, Ice needs a hug. Iceman Kazansky has been told all his life by everyone older than him that 'boys don't cry', 'boys don't have emotions' and if they do one must keep it all to themselves. He gets it, it's kind of why he'd called Iceman. But if there's one person that'll unexpectedly rewrite that lecture it's his newly rival-turned-wingman. Or, Ice tries to hold all his emotions in for the hundredth time and Maverick helps him understand he doesn't have to hide them anymore.
☁️Cingulomania (2127 words)
Rated Teen, fluff, hurt/comfort, Maverick needs a hug (noun) - a strong desire to hold someone in your arms. "When I go, I hope I go out just as beautifully,” Ice muses out loud. “Oh-” Maverick starts, seemingly involuntarily. “I’d really prefer it if you didn’t go at all..” Or, Iceman has unknowingly forged an emotional connection with his wingman
☁️I'm in Your Arms, I'm in Your Care (4187 words)
Rated Teen, two parts in one, hurt/comfort, both Ice and Mav need hugs Luck wasn't a strong enough word to describe how much love Ice felt for Maverick. There was such a thing as touch, though, and that was heaven for both of them.
☁️The Time Will Come (2633 words)
Rated Gen, SO much fluff, dadt, dadt repeal If there's one thing that had got Ice this far, it was the promise that one day, things would get better. He'd just have to wait. But he had got this far, looking at the smirking face of his partner-in-secret, Maverick Mitchell of all people.

fic: top gun but it's the american revolution and they're on horses, not planes
fire and fleet and candlelight
“A favor,” Stinger smiles, “from the General,”
“Which General?” Mitchell says, head snapping to Nick.
Figures. Mitchell can lead a company of men through the jaws of hell and back without a single casualty but it's Nick, who couldn’t tell his musket’s barrel from its stock, whose name carries any weight.

Okay someone wanted more thoughts on this so here is who I think nominated Mav!
First who are realistically our options? Rooster and Ice are out imo. Ice doesn’t watch queer eye and rooster is too emotionally stunted (tbh he’s a big part of the reason why Mav was nominated). That leaves me with Penny, Amelia, or Phoenix. I think each are good options. Penny does it because in this AU they are close friends and she in her true white women ally moment thinks this would be good for Mav. Amelia (who we seem to forget about a lot!! ) bc she’s a teenager who’s in with the trends and thinks it would be funny and cool to get Mav on QE. And then Phoenix who doesn’t really know Mav but deeply cares about rooster and knows that both of them need something crazy to get them to *really* reconcile (like y’all it took them dying in a plane crash to get to talk in the first place???!!!). Other totally random idea I just had but maybe wolfman or Hollywood. Not slider tho lol.
Watching queer eye and thinking about what would happen if mav (bc let’s be real Ice, while having a terrible work life balance, is put together enough) got nominated. The hanger would be remodeled, he would learn how to cook, attempt to talk about his feelings, get more fits than a white T-shirt and jeans. His hair would not need much tho lol.

post layton mission fic reqs!
Curated for all of you but inspired by conversations with @silentfallingrain :D. I've tagged the authors where i've been able to, i hope that's okay with everyone!!
To Be So Blind by @purplearrowzandleather-blog (hope it's okay to tag you! :) ) - A really sweet fic about ice and slider looking out for mav after top gun and just being there for the guy
caught up in the patterns by @vannral - post top gun with alive goose, pretty heart breaking for a while but the dialogue is honestly my FAV it really lightens the fic whilst simultaneously tugging your heart strings
flat spin, heading out to sea by @saengak - okay so this fic takes place from the beginning of top gun, but if you want a fic that makes some pretty heavy commentary on society and classism, this is it. it was one of the first big fics i started reading in top gun and i waited every monday morning for it like clockwork.
Folded In Grief by Katastrophe (karrington) poor mav, like honestly the bastard suffers in this but not for too long!
don't let the great whites bite by @mavernick no angsty here! i love this fic sm and mav's characterisation and the fly boys and just ahhh they're having fun!! and ice being there for mav!!!!
don't know how long it's gonna take to feel okay by rosexpetals i love love love the progression of the story tellingin this fic it's so ;fihsa;kfh
watch his six by @shearmouth okay so admittedly i haven't read the last chapter yet, but dude yal YALL i love this fic i eat this up i love it ice is so ;fhsa;khuf;uh i love it okay I LOVE IT the characterisation is delicious
and some shameless self plugs haha
At the end of their rope - mav's at a party a year after top gun and runs into osme people who knew cougar
I'm leaving on a jet plane - my first big top gun fic and now two years old so please excuse well...everything LMAO
Fleeting Love - slighty better writing, angst and icemav getting together

God Tier Top Gun Fanfictions. A Masterlist. (1/3)
As of 15th May 2024, these are some of the BEST stories I have read in the fandom. Of course, this is completely subjective and there are many personal factors as to why I crowned them God Tier.
Mainly:
Reading it for the first time: ‘Oh, this is really good, I’m going to be thinking about this for the rest of my life’
When compiling the list: ‘Oh my god, this fic, man, this fic!!’
There are many other fics that match the first criteria, but for it to be on this list, I needed to have these two reactions.
REMINDER! READ THE AUTHORS' TAGS AND WARNINGS!!! They’re there for a reason. PLEASE make sure you understand where the story is going to be before reading!!
Without further ado, I present to you, my roman empires:)
Winner Categories:
1. Best of the Best Authors (1/3)
2. Best of the Best Series (2/3)
3. Best of the Best Fics (3/3)
4. Honorary Mentions (4/3)
Best of the Best Authors
Authors that I trust with my life, whose work are ALL incredibly well written.
COMPACFLT @compacflt
They’re the first person to pop in my head when I was thinking about making this list. No amount of time and words will be enough for me to describe how good their work is. Seriously. It’s on a level I’ve never seen before for fanfiction. The world building, the characterization, the prose, everything. COMPACFLT has a way of understanding these characters, it makes so much sense and fits so well with canon. I’m just at a loss for words. Genuinely the reason I converted to Icemav supremacy.
When We Get Around to Talking About It
Goose has been dead for a week and a half when Iceman loses his first wingman in a dogfight with six Soviet MiGs over the Sea of Okhotsk. Goose has been dead for thirty years when Iceman loses his second wingman to a surface-to-air missile on the tail-end of a mission he's responsible for: he's sent his family on a suicide mission to destroy a uranium enrichment facility in Russia's Far East. This is the story of those thirty years in the middle. (Or: Tom Kazansky rises through the ranks while trying to stay a good man. If he ever was one to begin with.)
This was the first story I’ve read from them. And it’s so… I don’t have words.  It’s told from Ice’s perspective, filling the gaps between TG and TG:M with added Icemav and Hangster. In my mind this is canon:D
Debriefing (& Other Stories)
"We can start here, I guess. If we're talking about us," Pete says. "Nineteen-eighty-six. The first thing I thought, when I saw you in that O-club, was: Iceman is off-limits. Capital O, capital L." Despite himself, despite the fear, Tom laughs a little. "Oh, yeah? Why's that?" "Well, first off, we were competition. And yeah, you were attractive, but then you opened your mouth and I swear. You were just an asshole. Goose is trying to introduce you to me and here I am thinking about how much of an asshole you are. Shut up about Cougar, asshole." "It was supposed to be a friendly competition!" "Yeah, right. So that's what I was thinking: he's attractive, clearly doesn't know how to talk to other men, might be into the proposition if I framed it the right way. But he's an asshole, so this competition is just gonna be friendly." Pete pauses. Then he says, "Ice, you wanna get married?" And that's how they start talking about it. (Or: they finally get around to talking about it. Plus a couple extra stories for good luck.)
Sigh and send COMPACFLT a loving look. This Maverick's POV adds so much to the story without being repetitive. COMPACFLT deliberately tells their story like puzzle pieces, and they complete each other—just like Icemav, if you will.
The Slider oneshot is truly something else. I was so eager for the upload and kept an eye on their account for updates religiously. To flesh out a character that barely has any source material is an incredible skill to have. And the Bradley oneshot… Omg… My favorite characterization of Bradley, period.
Tremors & Aftershocks
They both come back to their senses and stop openly crying again eventually. The stitches fall out of the thirty-year-old wounds and the scars fade back to skin-color. Life stops being so painfully raw after a couple weeks back home. You get used to miracles the way you get used to anything else. One day at a time. [Or: 40 years of extras, from 1982-2022. Some true love, some heartbreak, some miracles.]
To me, this one has a different feeling from the other two. More focused on Ice and Mav’s relationship as opposed to the whole plotline. It’s tender and bittersweet and feels like being hugged for the first time and then told that you wouldn’t get another hug in thirty years time.
What impresses me most is that, if you go to COMPACFLT’s Tumblr account, you’ll see the thought they’ve put for these stories are INSANE. They’re so educated on the military and its history and it adds so much to these characters. I’m not American and all my writing for Top Gun will always stem from google searches and other fics. If you’re a nerd like me and like to read about other’s analysis about topics they know nothing about, I suggest you go to their account and have fun.
COMPACFLT, you have captured my soul with your writing. Thank you for your service and I wish you well in life.
AortaArgent @aortaargent
If you’re looking for an author who can write smut like nothing else, go to their profile. Better yet, click here, and scroll down to the threads they made about girl!Mav and get horny real quick. It’s a shortcut to heaven really. (And yes, I’m still upset that they seem to have left the fandom, but I still hold the stories they’ve left behind close to my heart:)) My favorites:
like a shotgun (needs an outcome)
“Ice gave me a handjob when we did this,” he argues. “Oh, that’s what gets you moving? Seeing who comes first?” With that, Slider takes hold of him, wrapping his hand around and keeping his fist steady. “Go on, baby girl. Fuck it like a good little -” He squeezes Slider’s balls a little harder than he’d imagine is necessarily pleasant. For Slider. It's definitely nice for him. “Fuck,” Kerner chokes out, weakly. Ice sounds like he’s trying not to laugh. “I told you he bites.” In which there are multiple realisations, improbable numbers of pilots hanging out in a shared shower, volleyball games and verbal tennis. Yes, it's compulsory to wear your dogtags in the shower - never know when you could need identification. (Only kidding, it's for added fuckability.)
It’s so hot... but believable at the same time. BDSM is just one of those things where you read about it and can tell if the author has experience or is just extremely well-informed.
Eye to Eye
“Maybe it’s not just us looking to get a piece of you,” Wolf says. He’s right by Maverick’s head, and a shiver rolls down his shoulders in a sweeping tide at the soft click of each word against his ear. “Maybe we offered. You’re so pretty, Mav. It’s not a hard sell.” His hands twitch with the effort of not reaching up to tear off the blindfold and find out if they’re telling the truth or just winding him up. It’s possible. Occupied, blindfolded, he might not have noticed the door opening. More guys could have been in the showers. Two hands circle his ankles, firm over his boots, and hold him steady. Someone else has his left hand, kneading the tendons down the back of it. Anyone and anything is plausible. A continuation. Finally.
HOT DAMN. That’s all.
AortaArgent portrayed Ice and Mav’s relationship as absolute and secure while having fun with Mav’s dynamic with the other guys. All of their works are mind-boggling and simply amazing!
thecarlysutra @icemankazansky
Need I say more? Carly’s one of the most prominent members of the Top Gun fandom. Actually, I trust any member of the Top Gun Old Guard. With Carly, there’s something about their writing that makes me think of discovering an old box of CDs you used to watch relentlessly, dusty and worn, but the nostalgia rushes back and it’s achingly familiar. You can tell they’ve been writing for Top Gun for so long the characters kind of became their own. And when you click on any fic they wrote, you can fall and trust they’ll catch you. My favorites:
and i promise, you're the locksmith
“Is something going on in your neighborhood?” Maverick asked. “Like … a pest problem or something?” “You could say that,” Ice said. “Like … a coyote or something?” “Suitors,” Ice said. Maverick's attempts to woo Iceman are somewhat complicated by the promise Ice has made: Anyone who wants to marry him must catch his cat, which wears the key to his house around its neck on a silver chain. Inspired by the Tumblr legend.
This one’s so cute!!! Ugh, I’m never going to get tired of reading Icemav fall in love over and over again.
Dreams of Impact
Maverick's trip in Darkstar takes him further than he ever imagined possible.
Sigh for the second time and send hearts Carly’s way. Basically, Mav gets transported to another universe and weird things happen. I love fics that dabble with the universe, the what-ifs, the what could’ve been. Do you ever have that moment when you make a decision, look back and wonder how life would be if you chose differently? Click on the link and read 🫵
aelibia @topgunreacts
God. aelibia’s just too good. It’s like banger after banger after banger. If you’re looking for an author whose work is a guaranteed good read, click the link and it’ll show you magic. They have Icemav ranging from tender and soft to angsty, portraying all different sorts of love and a way of writing explicit sex that I’ve never found anywhere else.
I can’t even pick which one’s my favorite because they’re all my favorite. Especially the series they wrote, oh my god. I love them all. However, one that I reread religiously and being giddy over is this:
Wine Dark Sea
Raised by a selkie mother bound to a human man, Ice returns to the human world as a teenager with a singular purpose: to find the source of human strength, and claim it for himself. But after a careless mistake binds him to another human man, Ice is forced to reconsider his most fundamental beliefs: What is the meaning of strength? And what is the cost of freedom?
It’s so silly at times and heartbreaking most of the time. I especially love the later chapters where the evil is defeated and Ice is just being a silly seal while Mav’s being the supportive partner that he is. This fic is the SOLE REASON that my favorite animal is a seal. Thank you for opening my eyes to something that has been so obvious from the start, your majesty aelibia.
I also humbly present these seal drawings because the image of Ice galumphing around a Navy base, complete with wet smacks and people shrieking in horror makes me laugh everyday. That, and the scene where Mav is surrounded by four fat harbor seal pups and reading a story to them. Eleven out of ten.
Tumblr media
This one’s my favorite:}

A couple of thoughts after re-watching TGM
What I think is actually canon
Amelia is Mav’s daughter (Penny hints at that when she’s talking to Mav about her) but Amelia doesn't know
Mav considers himself to be Bradley’s dad (Mav answers when Bradley asks his dad what to do)
Bradley considers both Goose and Mav to be his dad (after Mav says that Bradley saved his life, Bradley says that his dad would've done the same - considering the fact that Mav has already saved Bradley's life you could see that as Bradley seeing Mav as his dad, too)
Bradley has lived with Mav for a considerable period of time (Mav says to Penny he tried his best to be a father for Bradley)
Thoughts concerning TG3 / Predictions
I think they gonna set up Phoenix as Bradley's love interest because they seem very close in the movie (but for me they’re more like besties)
I hope they gonna keep the character's of Warlock and Cyclone (with Cyclone basically hating Mav and Warlock secretly supporting the shit Mav does all the time) and also they need to keep at least Warlock because somebody needs to prevent that Mav is thrown out of the Navy
I hope there still will be references to Ice (I just love him and he needs to be mentioned)
Other thoughts
I actually paid attention to the hangster dynamics for the first time
Jake’s and Bradley’s first hook up is right after dogfight football
Bradley is Ice-coded while Jake is Mav-coded
I ship bobnix now (I think Nat and Bob are very sweet together in the movie - need to find some fluffy fics about them)
The lifelong friendship between Ice and Mav just kills me (solely sticking to the movie here because otherwise icemav is endgame imo), like Ice basically knows everything about Mav (every shit he has done at work, everything around him pulling Bradley's papers, private problems he’s had etc.) and also the other way round (Mav supporting him during his battle with cancer and a whole lot of other things which we don't know because sadly Ice is only a minor character in both movies)
I love that Mav refers to Ice in the whole movie only by his nickname
I had to keep myself very hard from crying during the funeral scene (if I had watched it alone, I probably would’ve cried)

FIRST OFF I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR FICS!! Secondly I was wondering if I could request a little Drabble? Maybe a “Iceman is openly gay with slider, Hollywood and wolf man. But Maverick isn’t as comfortable with his sexuality and thinks he still has to act straight even though he’s got it BAD for ice”
first off thank you so much!!! :DD im glad you like my writing <3 & secondly of COURSE i can write that, i love a bit of closeted angst (i hope i got everything the way you wanted) this got a bit longer than i expected lol, it is crossposted to ao3 (HERE) if anyone prefers that format
standing face to face with "i told you so"
icemav angst (Word Count: 3,488)
Ice was staring again.
Maverick could feel those intense blue eyes burning into the side of his head as he intentionally stared forward, scanning the crowd at the bar as if he were actually looking for someone or something. He’d already gotten caught twice by the man when he had chanced a glance back to see if he was watching or not, and Maverick wasn’t sure his heart could take anymore eyecontact with the other pilot. Goose had kicked him in the shin in time for him to look away before an approaching lady caught him staring at Ice last time. But Goose had since drifted away to join the other pilots and RIOs in conversation, leaving Maverick alone at the bar and painfully aware of Ice’s attention. His pulse was racing, making his cheeks flush slightly as he thought about meeting his gaze again just to see.
“Right, Maverick?”
He almost jumped. He had forgotten completely about the lady at his arm – Sandra…or was it Sarah? He scrambled, but flashed her a smooth, well-practiced grin, and laughed, not knowing at all what she was asking him and hoping it was the right resposne. She seemed pleased with his laugh, giggling to herself as she leaned into his side to distance herself from the tall, frustrated-looking man who had followed her up to Maverick’s spot at the bar. Maverick gave the man a sharp, teeth-baring grin as he draped his arm over Sandra’s shoulders, leaning into her like a confident boyfriend.
“In fact, everyone keeps asking when we’re going to be engaged. This scoundrel just can’t commit, isn’t that right, Maverick?”
“You know what they say about us sailors. Brandy, you’re a fine girl,” Maverick crooned, half-singing with a wink. He placed a chaste kiss on her temple to keep up the act.
She laughed and put her arm around his waist, squeezing him as she looked up through her eyelashes, “What a good wife I would be?”
“But my life, my love, my lady–”
“Is the sea,” they finished in sync, laughing together. The man at her heels finally seemed to take a hint and walked off with an irritated huff, muttering under his breath.
Sandra stayed close up against his side for a while as she watched the man leave. She relaxed as Maverick leaned back against the bar, sighing and shaking her head. Her arm fell from around his waist and he took his arm back. She smiled at him, a sad look in her eyes and exhaustion in her voice as she spoke quietly enough that the music would’ve kept it a secret from anyone else, “Thank you for being a good man, Maverick.”
“Pete,” Maverick said with a smile, holding his hand out like it was a business deal. Her smile softened and she took his hand in a firm grip.
“Sandy,” she said as she shook his hand once, “but you can call me Brandy, sailor.”
Maverick grinned and tilted his head with a shrug, “It was improv.”
“It was good. Really,” she waid with a grin. She pulled a small compact mirror with an ornate carving of a flower on it from her bag and checked her reflection in it. She ran a hand through her hair and sighed again. “Some men can never seem to understand that some ladies just aren’t interested.”
Maverick raised an eyebrow, slightly caught off guard by the change in topic. He was about to respond when his eyes scanned over the crowd absently and caught another pair of eyes watching them. Ice still hadn’t looked away – or if he had, he was looking again. Maverick felt a thrill shoot up his spine as he locked gazes with the man, dangerous and electric, but it was overpowered by the familiar urge to smother it and push it back down deep where no one might see it. Not even him. He cleared his throat and tore his eyes away from Ice, looking back to Sandy.
“Mhm. Can I buy you a drink, Brandy?” Maverick asked waving to the bar behind him and pointedly ignoring the stares he was getting from Ice and the other pilots and RIOs. “Just between friends. I understand when a lady only wants to use me for her protection.”
Sandy laughed and snapped her compact mirror shut. She turned to lean against the bar with her forearms crossed. Maverick caught a flash of a white handkerchief in the left pocket of her jeans as she hummed, scanning over the bar’s options. Sandy eventually smiled and waved the bartender over, “I’ll have a whiskey, neat. Put it on the sailor’s tab.”
“Mitchell,” Maverick said in response to the glance from the bartender. He nodded and turned to make her drink as Sandy turned to face Maverick more. “So, Brandy, what brings you here if not to flirt with all the sailors? Everyone knows that’s the main crowd at this dive.”
“My taste is less…salty, more sweet,” Sandy said with a wink. She nodded to the bartender with a smile as he handed her the drink she requested. “If you know what I mean?”
Maverick had no idea what she meant. He nodded anyway, pretending to understand with a quiet hum. He waved to the bartender and he slid Maverick another glass of the tequila that he’d been sipping on all night. He couldn’t resist glancing tot he side out of the corner of his eye as he waited for the drink to be poured, seeing if the attention from the table across the bar was still on him – it was. Sandy lifted her cup when he picked his up, they clinked them together before tossing them back in sync.
“Put it on my tab this time. Tequila,” Sandy called out to the bartender. She ran a hand through her hair again before sliding a shot to Maverick with a grin. “You up for a challenge, sailor?”
“I can drink in circles around you, Brandy,” he said confidently. His mind was already drifting back to Ice even as they clinked their glasses on the bar before tossing them back in sync.
It wasn’t the first time he’d felt the sharp, nervous edge around the other pilot, but the awareness of that was always muted, vague. He blamed the tequila for how loud it seemed now. Maverick smiled easily at Sandy, feeling easy and in his element even if he could pick up that it was strictly platonic competitive energy between them. He was good with women. He’d dated countless women he genuinely liked; he could talk with them easily, laugh with them, play the part of a flirt without breaking a sweat – it was easy. Comfortable. Ice broke away any part of that comfort with his harsh words and challenging stares. He wasn’t simple or easy to get along with, and it was equal parts thrilling and terrifying.
“You’re not as oblivious as other men, are you?” Sandy asked before their next shot arrived. Her eyes were studying his face intensely, softened by alcohol and maybe a bit of camaraderie that Maverick wasn’t sure why she’d feel with him. Her eyes flitted briefly over to wher eIce was sitting, one eyebrow lifted just slightly out of his neutral resting face as he watched them – watched Maverick. “I mean, you’re clearly aware of your surroundings.”
Maverick shrugged and gave Sandy the grin that had saved him countless times in the past. “Iceman? Yeah, he’s competitive and a good pilot. We’re just…you know, rivals.”
“Oh, is that what they call it now?” she asked, her voice low and teasing as she grabbed two more shots for them from the bartender. For a split second, he felt his heart lurch into his throat and his face felt hot, a definitely blush creeping over his face that he couldn’t blame on the alcohol – an embarrassing reaction to what was likely just a harmless question.
Sandy gave him a sympathetic smile and pushed the shot into his hand, tossing hers back. “Relax, sailor. Just a friendly observation.” She didn’t look away from him though, and her expression softened a little as he took his shot and forced his eyes away from Ice for what felt like the umpteenth time. There was understanding in her eyes, sad and compassionate. “Listen, Pete, I know we don’t…know each other at all. But if you ever need to, you know…talk through it, or whatever, I get it.”
“Get what?” he asked – too quickly. She gave him a look that let him know that she could see straight through him. A slow grin worked across her face as she ordered another round.
“Oh, nothing,” she said lightly, “just some people like their whiskey neat, others like it with a twist.”
Maverick forced himself to laugh at Sandy’s comment, but her words lingered, stirring something he didn’t quite want to confront. He swirled the tequila in his glass, downing it quickly – he was drinking too fast, too much, he should cut himself off, but he lifted his hand to order another round from the bartender. Sandy simply watched him with a calm, knowing smile. After a moment, she leaned in with a conspiratorial grin.
“You know, Pete, I think I’ve had enough of sailors for tonight. I’ve spotted someone who might be more might type, think she’d be interested?” She nodded subtly toward a tall brunette with a sharp undercut and a black leather jacket, looking just a bit out of place in the sea of Naval whites. Maverick raised an eyebrow, watching Sandy adjsut her hair and straighten her jacket. She looked at him and gave him a playful wink and sly grin. “Wish me luck, sailor?”
He grinned back, feeling a strange sense of relief as everything clicked into place. He lifted his new glass to her, “Good luck, Brandy. I doubt you’ll need it.”
Sandy winked again and, with a confident sway to her hips, headed off across the bar with an impressively steady gate for taking so many shots with him so quickly. Maverick once again was alone with his own thoughts at the bar. He exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck as he felt the full force of Ice’s stare on him again. He tossed back the drink and slid his card to the bartender to close his tab. He’d probably regret his game with Brandy in the morning, but he didn’t care in the moment as he gathered himself and headed over to the table where the other pilots and RIOs were laughing and talking.
“Hey, Mitchell!” Slider called, smirking as he looked to where Sandy was now talking  to her new interest. “What happened to your date? You let a catch like that slip away?”
“Oh, come off it, Slider, she was just looking for help to get away from that creep,” Maverick said, shrugging it off. “She wasn’t my type anyway.”
Slider gave him an exaggerated look of utter disbelieve. “Not your type? That was probably the hottest lady in here, man. You’re slipping.”
“Maybe my standards re higher than yours,” he shot back, crossing his arms defensively and rolling his eyes.
“Please,” Hollywood chimed in with a grin and chuckle. He leaned back with his drink and pointed at Maverick. “Just face it, Mav, you just got friend-zoned by one of the hottest girls in this dive. Maybe she could tell you were already in love.”
“Or maybe I don’t chase after anything with a pulse unlike some people,” he snapped, his tone a little sharper than he had intended – the tequila. He glanced away as everyone went silent, feeling uncomfortable and awkward from the tension he’d accidentally caused. It was broken after a few moments by a low chuckle from Ice, which made Maverick glance over at him.
“That’s bold, Maverick. Those ‘some people’ might be at this table, you know,” Ice said, making intense, pointed eye contact that made Maverick’s cheeks burn before sipping his drink casually – vodka and lime. The usual. Always so predictable, going by the rule book even when they were supposed to be relaxing with friends.
“I’m just saying, I’m not into the…what, all the new-age ‘free love’ shit going around lately. Some of us still have standards,” he muttered – the words tasted bitter even as he said them. It was a cheap shot, a low blow, and not even something he believed, but he felt cornered and couldn’t think of an escape besides digging his way out. The air around the table grew still, and Maverick had the feeling his escape had actually been his grave he was digging deeper.
“You’re out of line, Mitchell,” Hollywood said evenly, his usually easygoing tone long gone. “It’s one thing to tease, but you don’t have to be homophobic about it.”
“Mav, I think we should get going. You’ve probably had too much,” Goose said slowly. He’d been laughing a moment ago, Maverick felt guilty over being the reason why his RIO looked so uncomfortable. “C’mon, man–”
“You know, Mitchell,” Ice said, cutting Goose off with a calm and measured tone. His depression was impossible to read, ice-cool as always but his eyes were sharp, as if he were silently daring Maverick to say something else. “I wouldn’t have thought you’d have such a problem with someone like me. There are so many better things for you to hate me over.”
Maverick’s stomach dropped. He could feel his pulse pounding as he stared at Ice. His mouth felt dry, and suddenly, any bravado and defensiveness he might’ve still had disappeared. He glanced around, trying to gauged if the others known all along, trying to read their expressions – but the tequila was making his thoughts feel muddled. Hollywood seemed to take pity on him and sighed, “If you didn’t know, now you do. Ice here is about as interested in women as that lady was in you.”
“I didn’t— I mean, I don’t care if he’s— If you…I—whatever, do whatever you want,” he muttered in a voice that sounded defensive even to himself. He tried to laugh it off but it sounded hollow even to himself. Goose stood up and grabbed Maverick’s arm in a light grip.
“Let’s go take a breather, man. You’re good, just…let’s go take a break,” Goose said quietly, tugging on his arm gently. Ice’s eyes held Maverick rooted in place, steady, waiting. There was something like pity in his gaze, but there was something else too – a challenge. Maverick couldn’t look at him directly, so he looked away like a coward, mumbling something under his breath that he didn’t understand. Ice nodded to himself and stood up.
“You’re good, Goose, I’ll get him home. I was about to get going anyway,” Ice said, brushing Goose’s hand off Maverick’s arm and replacing it with his own.
“You sure?”
“Don’t play pansy with me, I’m the only one here,” Ice said, making the table erupt into laughter – the tension finally breaking.
Maverick felt like he was on fire, heat consuming him and originating from the spot where Ice’s fingers were holding his arm in a firm grip. He didn’t fight it as Ice tugged him gently to guide him through the bar. Maverick glanced around and saw Sandy with the other woman; she gave him a knowing once over before looking at Ice’s hand on his arm and back to his eyes. There was a glint of pride in her eyes as she lifted her glass to him, and then he was outside.
Outside and alone with Ice.
“Mind if I have a smoke while we walk?” Ice asked casually, as if nothing had been said inside.
Maverick shrugged. Ice took that as permission and somehow fished a cigarette out of the pack in his pocket, lit it, and took a puff without ever letting go of Maverick’s arm. He blew the smoke out away from Maverick, which he appreciated – the smell of smoke was making his stomach suddenly realize how much tequila it had consumed in such a short amount of time. He was stumbling and swaying as they walked despite his best efforts, making his leg brush against Ice’s with every other step. Maverick felt like if Ice made eye contact or they touched one more time, his head might explode from the amount of blood making his face burn.
“‘m sorry,” Maverick said when he knew they were alone.
Ice glanced over, taking another slow inhale through his cigarette without saying a word. Maverick almost wondered if he’d even spoken out loud, or if his words had been too slurred for the other pilot to understand. Ice’s hand tensed around his arm and he pulled Maverick to the side, nodding politely to the man he’d almost walked straight into without even realizing. Maverick stumbled from the sudden change in direction, unable to stop his legs as he staggered into Ice’s side. The other pilot reacted faster than Maverick’s drunk brain could track, holding the cigarette in his mouth and catching Maverick with both hands, steadying him until he got his feet back under him.
“You’re a real piece of work, Mitchell,” Ice muttered, waiting for Maverick to start walking before he grabbed the cigarette out of his mouth again and exhaled the smoke. “Dangerous in the air, and dangerous on the ground. Never would’ve pinned you for one of those.”
“Of what?” Maverick asked, wincing at the look that question earned him.
“A homophobe.”
Maverick felt like the air had been punched from his lungs. He didn’t know what to say in response to Ice’s words. He’d said it so simply, so matter-of-factly, as if Ice was completely confident in Maverick being hateful and that he had almost accepted it as a fact just as easily as the sky is blue and Ice is the best pilot in the Navy. Maverick didn’t know how to convince him otherwise, he didn’t know what words could help him.
So he didn’t say anything.
The rest of the walk was in silence. Ice eventually flicked the stub of his cigarette into a random ashtray. They stayed shoulder to shoulder, and the grip Ice had on his arm was the only thing keeping Maverick from falling into the street in front of oncoming traffic. Maverick didn’t really remember most of the walk, but Ice somehow got them both onto the base and into the barracks. He came back into his body sitting on his bed, swaying in place as Ice helped him pull his uniform off. Maverick blinked up at him when Ice stepped back. The silence felt heavy. Maverick needed to break it, or risk breaking the unsteady beginning of a friendship that he’d only recently felt starting between them.
“Ice–” Maverick staggered when he stood up too fast, feeling very underdressed in his boxers compared to Ice’s pristine and perfectly tailored Naval whites, but uncaring as he caught himself with his hands on Ice’s shoulders. Ice caught him again, hands gentle and firm on his upper arms as he helped Maverick find his balance. “Iceman, Ice, I–”
“Don’t say anything, Mitchell. You won’t remember it in the morning, and I need you to remember this conversation,” Ice said; his voice sounded sad. His eyes were sad. Maverick had made the steady, ice-cold Iceman sad.
“Ice,” Maverick repeated, shifting his hands to hold his shoulders more firmly. He licked his lips to moisten them and saw Ice’s eyes dart down to them before the man looked back in his eyes. “Ice.”
Maverick threw all caution to the wind, leaning in and standing up on his toes. A hand pressed over his face before his lips could reach their target. Ice’s expression was tense, eyes still sad but filled with understanding that made Maverick feel like his soul was laid bare between them for Ice to inspect. He shook his head slowly and pushed Maverick back gently, taking his hand away from his face as he helped him sit back down on the bed. Maverick stared at him with confusion and hurt probably written clear as day in his expression, and Ice gave him a sad smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He cupped Maverick’s face and brushed his fingers through his hair before pulling all of his touch away all at once.
“You won’t remember this in the morning, Mitchell,” Ice said softly, he tilted his head as he studied Maverick. “Go to sleep. If you remember anything, I’ll be at breakfast.”
Ice’s words felt like an order that Maverick couldn’t ignore as his eyes grew too heavy to protest. A gentle hand helped ensure he was lying on his bed as he tipped over bonelessly. He heard footsteps and shuffling nearby, but the world faded too fast. The last thing he thought he felt was a hand brushing through his hair as the sheet was pulled over his chest.

response to this ask from @awkwardcoffeebean I started writing the beginning of the fic today and it turned into kind of a long section. other scene from this fic I've written is here
🐴 Hangster Done & Dusted au snippet (which I've since decided to make a 3 part series interconnected with a Bobnix & icemav fic yippee yay):
“You and I are going out tonight. No moping.” Javy said with glee, pulling Jake up off the living room floor.
“I’m not moping.” Jake protested. It was a lie, an untruth they both knew. Jake was moping. He’d uprooted his entire life only to show up at his best friend’s doorstep after sunset, without a text or a call to warn him. Jake didn’t call after he packed up his apartment. He didn’t call when he left Denver or at any point during the eight hour drive to Meadowlark. Worst of all Jake didn’t call Javy when he got hurt either. Guilt churned in Jake’s gut, Javy didn’t need to know about that either. Jake was moping.
“Come on, I don’t care what happened and I’m glad you came. But if you’re not gonna talk I still wanna go drink.” Javy said as he dragged Jake to the bedroom befor he started rooting around to find something for Jake to wear.
The rest of Jake’s  clothes, along with his entire life, were packed up in the flatbed of his pickup sitting in Javy’s driveway. Jake didn’t want to open that up, and Javy didn’t force him, so he accepted the fact Javy would be dressing him with his own closet and tried to smile.
Javy was Jake’s best friend. A seven year old boy who arrived the same day his father came to work at the Seresin ranch and had been by Jake’s side ever since. If Javy wasn’t straight Jake had a feeling they would’ve been down at town hall married at eighteen. Sexuality aside they were soulmates, which is why Jake could come to him like this.
Quickly, Javy produced a white t-shirt bordering on a size to small for Jake and a blue flannel that he always used to steal in high school because it brought out his eyes. Jake stripped and pulled the clean, and not tearstained, shirts over his head and Javy grinned in approval.
“The Hard Deck isn’t gonna know what hit it. You look hot.” He shook Jake’s shoulders and grinned. Then pulled him outside and shoved Jake into the passenger seat of his 2005 Chevy truck.
The Hard Deck was the most important bar in Meadowlark. It had been open since the early 90s, by some buddies who had just come home after serving in the Navy, hence the name. The Hard Deck was a local spot, a dingy dive bar that was always crowded and rowdy. Jake had fond memories going to watch the game with his dad, and later sneaking in on Friday nights as a teenager.
Like the rest of town, Jake hadn't seen the bar in almost six years, visiting once when he came home from college after his Junior year. Every other time he saw family since then they’d visited him in Denver or come to one of his races. Being home under these circumstances was as comforting as it was nerve wracking.
They pulled into the parking lot pleased to see that it was full. Maybe Jake would get away with going unnoticed tonight, small towns loved gossip, but if everyone was plastered and focused on the band maybe he’d go unnoticed. Jake’s palms itched at the thought of his dad finding out he was back in town before he had the chance to tell him himself.
Stepping through the doors was like stepping back in time to when Jake felt sure of himself and thought he understood the world. The Hard Deck hadn’t changed. The smells, stains, and sights were still there.
They found a table and Javy offered to get them drinks. Leaving Jake alone to look around and continue ignoring the texts from Derek that were surely coming in. He tried to focus on the music blasting from the jukebox.
Javy returned with the drinks, setting down two beers and two shots. Jake downed both tequila shots before Javy could finish explaining why he’d gotten them.
A few beers and more shots that he wanted to count later Jake was starting to feel pleasantly buzzed, on the way to plastered. Then the soft baseline at the beginning of Take My Breath Away by Berlin started to filter through the bar and Jake groaned.
“Javy you didn’t tell me he’s here.” He pointed an accusatory finger. “This was a trap set to torture me.” Bradley Bradshaw always loved to play this song to fuck with Jake. It had been an inside joke with his brothers that he never let go of.
Javy snickered and shook his head. “You know this is the only place to drink in town, it wouldn’t have made a difference if I saw him. Besides I would have thought you were over your weird one-sided rivalry with him by now.”
Jake glared at his friend and took another sip of his beer. No point trying to explain his issues while drunk. If Bradshaw wasn’t going to come find him he’d just leave. Jake finished his beer with a few gulps and slammed it back on the table. Then he stood up and made his way to the door. Jake knew Javy would follow.
He almost made out the door. Mere feet away from the parking lot when a male body came out of nowhere and collided with him. He stumbled and looked down to see an arm steadying him, it was the last person he wanted to see right now. Bradley Bradshaw.
“Oh hey easy there partner.” Bradshaw said in an annoyingly smooth voice. “Had a few too many tonight Seresin?” He was still holding Jake steady with a hand on his shoulder and smirking like the jerk he always was. He probably hadn’t changed at all since Jake last saw him. Nothing in Meadowlark ever changed.
Jake let his eyes trace over Bradshaw. Almost as tall as Jake, sporting a golden tan, and wearing his hair longer than Jake remembered, Jake’s mouth went dry. Bradshaw now had a mustache paying homage to Tom Selleck that unfortunately suited him. It made him look his age, now a settled and confident thirty-one year old, rather than the overgrown angry teenager Jake remembered. Bradshaw was wearing an ugly Hawaiian shirt over a band tee that clashed with it. Jake hated how much it worked for him.
Jake forced his brain to come back online and focus. He huffed and brushed Bradshaw’s hand away. “What are you doing here?” He always hated being drunk around smug sober people. Smug sober Bradshaw was making this ten times worse.
“Hello to you too Jacob.” He was smirking. The asshole. “You know Nat didn’t mention you were gonna be back in town. It's good to see you.”
“Fuck off Bradshaw.” Jake snipped. The last thing he needed right now was someone’s pity. Jake had a suspicion that rumors had already been flying around Meadowlark and everyone knew he wasn’t racing anymore. He didn’t want to listen to Bradshaw gloating about his failures.
“Woah someone’s testy tonight.” He was still smirking.
“I had a bad day and now it’s even worse seeing you.”
Bradshaw laughed but Jake’s focus was pulled away when he felt his phone buzz again. Derek was calling. He fumbled to get the phone out of his pocket and cursed. “He won’t leave me alone. Take a hint Derek.” He yelled at the caller ID. Bradshaw momentarily forgotten.
“Who won’t leave you alone?” Bradshaw asked, tone akin to something Jake would almost call protective if he was sober enough to notice.
“No one you need to worry about.” Javy said. Appearing over Jake’s shoulder and taking the phone out of his hand. “I’ll take this before you make any bad decisions too.” Jake grumbled and let his friend take his phone without more complaint. “I’ve got him the rest of the night. I’ll get him home safe.” Javy said to Bradshaw as he held Jake’s hand and walked him to the truck.
Seated shotgun Jake doubled over and ran his hands through his hair. He felt the car start moving and sat back in his seat. “I can’t believe he was there. And sober too, where does he get off laughing at the rest of us who come in to drown our sorrows?”
“I guess I should’ve warned you but I’d thought you knew.” Javy sounded amused as he turned onto main street.
“Knew what?”
“Bradley owns the Hard Deck now Jake. He’s been running it for the past five years.”
Jake groaned. “Of course.”

The Surface Officers’ Spouses’ Club: An IceMav Fic
Summary: Maverick is a captain in his own right, but he’s also an admiral’s spouse. Or, five times someone else calls Maverick “Admiral Kazansky’s husband/spouse,” and the one time Maverick refers to himself as such.
Word Count: 2.6k+
Notes: Back in October / November 2023, I asked which of my Top Gun ideas I should write next, and a solid third of you chose this one! I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
This fic takes place shortly after DADT was repealed in 2010/2011.
Maverick is a captain. At the beginning of the fic, Ice is a two-star admiral / Rear Admiral, Upper Half.
Fanfic!
The first time someone addressed Maverick as “Admiral Kazansky’s husband,” he flushed red, but slipped his hand into Ice’s and squeezed. They had only been married for a month—only even been out as a couple for the two months since DADT was overturned—and it still thrilled Maverick to be able to claim Ice as his own, and to be claimed in return.
They were in love, and they could tell the whole world. The only thing Maverick wanted more was Bradley back in his life.
The second time someone addressed Maverick as “Admiral Kazansky’s husband,” he frowned, and purposefully straightened the collar of his uniform so his silver captain’s eagle caught the light. This was Captain Mitchell’s meeting, and Captain Mitchell had been a captain long before he became an admiral’s husband.
The third time someone addressed Maverick as “Admiral Kazansky’s husband,” she didn’t use the word “husband.” She came up to him in the commissary, a lipstick-red smile across a lightly sun-tanned face, blonde bob just brushing her cheeks, and said, “Hi! You’re Admiral Kazansky’s spouse, right?”
Maverick paused, and lowered his hand from where he’d been reaching for the dinosaur egg oatmeal—Bradley’s favorite, and the only kind Maverick himself could eat now after having it for years.
“That’s me,” he said, though the words came slowly. ‘Navy spouse,’ he thought, implied someone like the woman before him, left behind lamenting their husband’s deployments. Someone like Carole, who had been raising Bradley mostly on her own even before Goose died.
‘Navy spouse’ did not mean someone like Maverick, who went on deployments himself more than Ice did now.
Maverick had never been good at hiding his emotions, so his hesitation must have shown, but the woman didn’t seem deterred. Instead, her smile widened.
“Excellent! I’ve been trying to find you to ask if you’d be interested in joining the Point Loma Surface Officers’ Spouses’ Club? My name is Melissa Royce, I’m Captain Royce’s spouse, and we—”
“I’m sorry,” Maverick interrupted. “I think you have the wrong idea. I am married to Admiral Kazansky, but I’m a captain, too. I wouldn’t…”
Maverick trailed off, hands waving to try and communicate what he wouldn’t be. Belong, in a group of spouses? Know what to do, amongst a group of people who had all given up their own ambitions to support their husbands, while Maverick gave Ice more trouble than he was worth?
Melissa’s smile grew smaller, but she reached out and patted him on the arm. “Honey, I think there’s been a misunderstanding. You wouldn’t be the only officer in the group; lots of us are two-officer pairs, though heaven knows I don’t know how you do it.
“But beyond that…” She arched one eyebrow. “This is a support group, honey. For us, and for the base. How do you think it stays standing when all the sailors are deployed? How do you think it stays standing when you’re all here?”
Maverick stared at her. Somehow, he thought the protest that he was an aviator, not a sailor, would just prove her point. It hadn’t been so long since he was a young lieutenant that he’d forgotten the havoc they could wreck on shore leave.
And if Melissa really meant it, that ‘spouses’ could include ‘officers’… What did Maverick have to lose?
“When’s the next meeting?” he asked.
<line break>
Maverick eased open the door to the community room, situated on the second floor of a building that also housed the base’s library, after school childcare, and a general store. It was a bit of an “everything building,” Melissa had explained, and the Point Loma Surface Officers’ Spouses’ Club—also known as PLSOSC, because apparently even Navy spouses loved their acronyms—booked the community room once a week, every Saturday morning.
Saturday, she had said, because those with kids could rely on spouses or babysitters, and those with jobs had a better chance of making the meeting on the weekend than during the work week. Mornings, she had said, because nothing got ideas flowing like free coffee and a bunch of gossipmongers.
She hadn’t specified what “ideas” they needed to come up with. Hadn’t specified much of anything beyond when and where, and that he “just needed to bring his handsome face; it’s not a potluck!”
So there Maverick was. Empty-handed, handsome face freshly shaved, handsome husband abandoned in bed on a Saturday morning, when normally they’d be taking the chance to sleep in together.
Ice hadn’t been happy about that, his hands reaching out as Maverick left the bed, lips pouting and cheeks puffed out, though he’d perked up a bit when he heard what Maverick’s plans were.
“I’m glad you’re making new friends,” he had said, even as the perpetually cold-blooded admiral curled his hands back into the comforter and tucked it under his own chin.
Maverick… wasn’t as sure that “making new friends” was what he was doing. He also wasn’t sure if it was going to be worth leaving Ice alone like that.
But he’d told Melissa he’d try it, so here he was; Maverick regularly flew upside down, just because he could… He could handle a bunch of Navy spouses.
Although, even just opening the door and immediately being bombarded with loud voices had him second-guessing that ability.
One voice rose above them all.
“Pete!” Melissa called. “Everyone, this is Captain Pete Mitchell, Admiral Kazansky’s spouse. Pete, this is everyone!”
Melissa waved at the crowd, and Maverick shoved his hands into his pockets as he walked forward, taking the room in.
Folding tables had been put away against the walls, but the chairs were all out, accommodating about twenty people sitting in a circle. Several of them had clipboards out, pens poised over paper already half-filled with ink.
“Come in, come in!” Melissa beckoned. “There’s an empty seat right by Bryan.”
A middle-aged man with cool, dark brown skin nodded at Maverick, his longer-than-Navy-regulation black locs swaying with the motion.
The woman on the other side of the empty seat, brown hair sheered short in a buzzcut over pale white skin, snorted under her breath, “Melissa is not subtle.”
“Shut up,” Bryan laugh-whispered. “She’s doing her best.”
“She’s making a point,” the woman replied, and offered her hand to Maverick. “Hi, I’m Lieutenant Emily Brock. Stationed with Submarine Squadron 11. My wife is a THIRD Fleet officer.”
Maverick shook her hand, then shook Bryan’s when he offered, too. “Bryan Matthews, civilian,” Bryan said. “My wife is also with THIRD Fleet.”
“Captain Pete Mitchell,” Maverick said, grinning a bit at the realization Melissa had put him in-between another officer-spouse and a male-spouse. “You can just call me ‘Maverick’ though. And my husband is, uh—”
“Admiral Kazansky,” Bryan and Emily finished. They both laughed, and Emily gave Maverick a friendly nudge with her elbow. “Hope you stick around, if only so I can tease Becca I’ve got an in with her boss.”
The wife, Bryan mouthed, and Maverick nodded back.
“Is Becca here too?” he asked.
Emily shook her head. “Nah, submariner spouses have their own group. So do aviators—your husband will probably get an invite there soon, if he hasn’t already.”
Maverick blinked. He hadn’t even considered if Ice belonged in a group like this. He was Rear Admiral Thomas “The Iceman” Kazansky, rising star of the US Navy, on-track to be COMPACFLT someday. He wasn’t like Maverick, desperately holding onto the captain position with both hands while trying not to be discharged or promoted.
But if Captain Mitchell qualified as a Navy spouse because he married Admiral Kazansky… then wasn’t the reverse also true? That Admiral Kazansky was a Navy spouse because he married Captain Mitchell?
“Huh.” Maverick leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms and tuning back into the conversation and atmosphere around them.
Melissa was certainly a leader amongst them, which made sense; Captain Royce, while lower in rank than Ice, was the CO of Point Loma itself. But none of the spouses were shy about barking ideas to the people with clipboards. Several people had broken off into smaller groups, like Bryan, Emily, and Maverick, while others moved from group to group. Others still congregated at the one table that was set-up with—Maverick sniffed—coffee.
Most people wore comfortable clothes, just jeans and t-shirts, and others wore uniforms. Some people drifted in, and others drifted out. The room was a constant flow of movement and ideas.
“So… what exactly are we supposed to be doing?” he asked, turning back to Bryan and Emily.
“Gossiping,” Emily said.
“Brainstorming,” Bryan said.
Maverick looked between them, eyebrow raised.
“Brainstorming,” Emily said.
“Gossiping,” Bryan said.
<line break>
The answer, Maverick found, was both. PLSOSC focused on building a community out of people who were often in Point Loma for only a few years, or even just a few months, at a time. That meant people were welcome to just chat and catch up, but they could also throw out ideas for trips off-base, donation drives, dinner parties—anything and everything a group of adults could do together.
And it wasn’t just PLSOSC, named the Point Loma Surface club for a reason. Emily had been right: Ice received his own invitation to the Point Loma Aviator Officers’ Spouses’ Club, or PLAOSC, and came back from the first meeting with tears in his eyes from all the funny stories the other spouses had heard second-hand about Mav.
“‘Captain Mitchell’s spouse!’” Ice gasped, voice high in a falsetto. “‘Oh, I must know, did he really moon an admiral in o-eight?’”
“‘Why yes,’” Ice answered himself, voice dropped even deeper than his natural tone, “‘but the admiral in question was his boyfriend, and they were in a locker room, so it was only natural.’”
Maverick almost broke a rib, he laughed so hard at Ice’s retelling.
In joining the two groups, Maverick also knew that he and Ice had had an entire world opened before their eyes. They had known every inch of aircraft carriers in the past, all the docks and offices, runways and classrooms, everywhere a Navy aviator might go.
Now, they also knew what happened behind-the-scenes: The stories that spouses whispered to each other about visiting officers, the stories they told about Point Loma’s own officers, and even the stories they told about Admiral Kazansky and Captain Mitchell. They’d been able to get ahead of more than one potentially bad rumor because Melissa whispered it in Maverick’s ear before anyone else’s, or because someone told Ice what the latest story was.
“Admiral Kazansky’s spouse,” Ice would sing as he opened the door to their home, “just what have you been up to?”
“Only the usual, Captain Mitchell’s spouse,” Maverick would respond, leaning his head backwards over the arm of the couch to look at Ice. “Buzzing towers and mooning admirals.”
“But only one admiral, right?” Ice would whisper, leaning down, and Maverick would whisper back, “Right,” as he returned his husband’s kiss.
No matter where they were stationed, there was an Officers’ Spouses’ Club waiting for them: Gossip, community, and all.
There was even one at TOPGUN.

Rooster had to admit, being back in California and living in his childhood home was a lot less stressful the second time around, now that he had a huge successful mission under his belt, half a dozen new friends, a dozen solidified old friendships, and a renewed relationship with his godfather and uncle.
Leaning back in his chair, the rubber back-straps squeaking, Rooster popped the last of his tater tots in his mouth. It was fall, but being on the California coast meant the morning was both heated by the sun and cooled by the ocean breeze—the perfect combo for a squadron brunch on a diner patio.
The squad did tend to take up the entire patio, leaving no room for anyone else, but the seats were filled, so the owners didn’t mind.
Rooster hummed under his breath and tapped a beat on the table with his fingers, grinning at Phoenix when she raised an eyebrow at him.
“What?” he laughed. “It’s a good morning.”
She shook her head. “You’re so like Mav.” Her eyes slid past him, and Rooster sat up, twisting to see—
Maverick, chair creaking on the back two legs, fingers tapping along the table edge, grinning at Ice and shaking his head. The admiral was probably trying to get Maverick back on all four chair legs again; Rooster wished him luck. Only his mom had ever been able to get Maverick to sit properly, and only then when he had Bradley himself in his lap.
Rooster stood at the thought, a grin already forming.
“Watch this,” he told Phoenix, and strode over to Maverick.
“Hey, Mav,” he said, faux casual, and dropped his butt in Maverick’s lap like he was five years old again.
Being a few decades older than that, of course, his weight pulled Maverick’s chair back down to earth, Maverick squawking under the sudden pressure and Ice barking a laugh, raspy from his recent bad cold, but his humor clear.
Around them, the daggers broke out laughing as well. Maverick groaned, but wrapped his arms around Rooster’s waist.
“You can just ask, Gosling,” Maverick cooed.
Rooster froze, stomach twisting with a bad feeling. The gleeful look on Phoenix’s face—even more than when Rooster had first sat in Maverick’s lap—only made the bad feeling grow.
“Ice, look what—Oh, hey guys! What are you doing here?”
Rooster blinked. A group of people had been walking down the sidewalk, but had come to a stop right in front of the diner. Right in front of Maverick and Ice’s table, actually.
An older Black man with a short, graying afro grinned at them. “You’re the one who recommended this place, Mav,” he said. “Didn’t say the patio would be off limits, though!”
Maverick laughed. “Sorry ‘bout that, Bryan. It’s kind of turned into our Sunday morning hangout spot.” His hand patted Rooster’s knee, and Rooster stood, suddenly realizing that he had been sitting on his godfather’s lap still.
Bryan shook his head. “It’s all fine. We’ll find a spot inside.” His gaze turned to Rooster, brown eyes piercing. “Bradley, right? Nice to meet you. You’ll have to come to one of our family events sometime.”
Rooster swallowed. He’d never introduced himself to Bryan, but he’d known his name—and not just his callsign.
“Ooh, that’s a great idea!” Maverick agreed. “Don’t have any on the calendar right now though, right? We’ll have to talk next Saturday.”
“Are you coming then, Mav?” One of the people behind Bryan leaned forward, eyes lit up. “You’ve missed the last ones!”
“He’s been busy, Cheryl,” another woman hissed, poking the first in the side.
Cheryl pouted, but Maverick just laughed. “I’ll be there,” he promised.
Rooster slid back over to Phoenix as the group walked through the patio and into the diner, each person saying hi to Mav, and some to Ice as well.
“Was I just threatened?” he hissed in her ear.
“Nah,” she replied. He relaxed, and then—“Well, maybe a little. Don’t hurt Mav again, though, and you’ll be alright.” She patted his side, laughing.
Rooster backed away slowly as Halo pulled her into conversation, naturally ending up by Maverick and Ice again.
“What was all that about?” he asked.
“Huh?” Maverick paused mid-sentence to Ice, looking up at Rooster instead. “Oh, that was the TOPGUN Surface Officers’ Spouses’ Club.” He paused, then added, “Which I’m part of. Because I’m this guy’s spouse.” He poked Ice in the arm, and Ice rolled his eyes.
“Yes,” Ice sighed. “‘This guy’s’ spouse.”
Maverick laughed. “Well, everyone else says I’m Admiral Kazansky’s spouse. But I just call him Ice.”
Maverick leaned across the small table, meeting Ice halfway in a chaste kiss, and Rooster turned on the spot, hurrying back to Phoenix.
“I’m going to puke,” he hissed at her, and she grinned at him, eyes crinkled and wicked.
“You’re the one who engaged the lovebirds.”
“My mistake,” Rooster sighed, but smiled when he glanced back to see Maverick and Ice holding hands.
Yeah. Life was pretty great.

What to write weekend? 6-9th Feb 2025
I have four days ahead of me with no social engagements, just household chores, baking, gardening and family time. And WRITING.
Most of you know what to do here, however for the newbies to this blog - so that I spend time actually writing rather than just day-dreaming about writing, you can reply to this post, send me an ask (anon is on), or a DM - choose up to three letters/numbers from the blog's PINNED POST, or I have once again copy/pasted the ones I'm most interested in working on below. I will write 150-200 words per letter/number. I am aiming for 5k/day for the next 4 days.
Tracking is here for those of you that like spreadsheets.
Tumblr media
Am working on the last chapters of Season to Taste, From the Top and Never Knew I was Missing You but you can still ask for them as well.
(Hopefully removed the tags from the people so they don't get notifications!)
1) Sagas of Solitude 18/21 - IceMav with side Hangster AU - angsty Nepo!Baby Bradley Bradshaw who has to keep his relationship with Mav and Ice a secret when he starts at the USNA. Featuring married Ice and Mav (but not to each other). Prologue He Remembers and Lonely Nights are both set in this verse. (Last updated 24th Jan)
2) Season to Taste 41/42 Celebrity Chef Bradley and Naval Aviator Jake Seresin who have a relationship spanning the globe before they realize how tightly bound they are to one another. Heading into this little world. (Last updated 31stJanuary)
A) Upon which our souls touch - 8/? - Hangster Fantasy AU (Last updated 1st January 2025)
B) Never knew I was missing you - 8/9 - Hangster AU with Jake a naval aviator and Bradley and A-list Hollywood star. They meet on a dating app. Famous and cat fishing that isn't cat fishing because online relationships are rife but...? (Tumblr idea) (Last updated 27th January 2025)
C) The Jake hits on Bradley at Ice's funeral AU...
D) IceMav with unknown about children because the US Navy is evil and produced offspring because of genetics being a THING. (Tumblr ramblings)
E) Cyclone/Maverick - Cyclone is struggling to deal with being attracted to the most annoying person he's ever met. Why does he like him so much?
H) From the top 5/6 - an Ice/Mav epistolary fic where Jake and Bradley matchmake them, not realising exactly who it is they've matched together. AU divergent ish. (Last updated 25th January 2025)
K) Caring, Keeping and Collecting Transformers - A Guide - 13/?Transformers cross-over for help me @yeagrave is 110% to blame for me adding this... (related to this post) (Last updated 25th January 2025)
L) Hangster Sports Team AU with Hangster being ex-es (like stood up at the alter type exes) and the trade deadline coming in hot and Bradley being traded in and all hell is about to break loose... Ramblings and more here.
S) White hot - 3/? Jake is a blacksmith and artist and Bradley is a high school history teacher. (This will be a one shot on AO3 but I'll post it as it is written here). (Updated 27th January 2025)
T) A picture is worth 1000 words - 7/? - Hangster post-TGM events, Jake and Bradley becoming friends on Instagram through increasingly competitive thirst traps. (Tumblr post) (Last updated 4th February 2025)
U) Tracing Poetry with your lips - 4/? - Explicit Hangster - Jake vs Bradley kissing competition with no touching (tumblr post from @iprefervillains) (Last updated 24th January 2025)
V) Actual fleshed out "wrong number" AU from @caystar13star
W) The amnesia fic if @the-ace-with-spades doesn't mind me absconding with another of his ideas.
X) Bradley is a guy who lives for fun jobs and Jake the architect who builds him a castle...
TGBB) A mystery fic that won't be revealed until October but you can still make me write it. I just can't share any details. But it'll be complete and over 20k.

Last 10 Fics!
I was tagged by the lovely @indybob to post the title and the first line of the last 10 fics I’ve posted! (I‘m gonna cheat 😄 and leave the more explicit ones out.)
Let‘s see… All fics are locked down to ao3, so you have to log-in to read them. 🤗
At thirty-nine, Jake had long dispensed with the idea of finding someone to share his life with.
🔗 Let him(self) Jake/Bradley
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
There‘s never been a less ideal time for his ex to show his face unannounced than it is now, with Javy and Callie here at his house, oblivious to who the person standing on his porch is.
🔗 I knew you in another life Jake/Bradley
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
"Jake?"
He jumped at Bradley's voice resounding in the quiet locker room, shoulders drawing together on instinct, the quick movement agitating the bruise forming on his side.
🔗 I‘ve been doing better (Than the last cold four Decembers Jake/Bradley
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
“Love, there’s a young man who’s been standing on our front step for about half an hour.”
🔗 Ain't no river wide enough, baby Jake & Mav, background IceMav
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
Bradley sighs when he turns around to find Jake behind the counter about to pour coffee for himself.
🔗 I’m afraid that once your heart is involved, it all comes out in moron Jake/Bradley
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
There’s a pride pin on Phoenix’s dresser that wasn’t there the last time they hooked up.
🔗 Barbie/Ken Jake/Nat
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
Javy was ready to get out of there.
🔗 5 Times Javy and Jake Hid Their Relationship (+ 1 Time They Didn’t) Jake/Javy
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
“Hey sweetheart,” Bradley croons through the line.
🔗 If you need me call me, you don‘t have to worry Jake/Bradley
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
Javy’s been watching his best friend make heart eyes at Rooster – ones he thinks are subtle – for a couple of weeks now.
🔗 Five Times a Dagger Learns About Hangman & Rooster (And One Time Maverick Does) Jake & Javy
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
[ch1.] They’re on their way back from base, Jake driving and Bradley mentally going through potential missteps he had taken throughout the day.
[ch2.] It‘s Bob‘s birthday and he celebrates it at a gay club Jake has never been to, but has definitely stared at the Google Maps location of, one or two times when he had been stationed in San Diego.
[ch3.] Jake scoffs. “I’m not.”
[ch4.] "Hey, kiddo." Jake chuckles even as his heart does a little flip at the nickname falling so easily off Mav‘s lips, even years later.
Additional scenes in the “Won’t somebody” 'verse Jake/Bradley
I‘m tagging anyone who wants to do this. YES, that means YOU, person currently reading this sentence. 😉🫶
