Constantly gets lectures from Brennen every time he says they have the smartest dog

Only got one after Michael-Vincent kept begging

It curls up in her lap while she paints or draws

Has the hedgehog with Angela obviously

He lets sit on his shoulder when relaxing

Built it a fucking MASSIVE enclosure in their house

This lil thing has so much to play with it’s insane

After a year or two of owning the hedgehog, he convinces Angela to get a tortoise

He bought a beta fish one day bc he thought a pet would make him less lonely but he was scared of all the other species at the pet store

He named it Archimedes

Originally just had it in a glass bowl

Bought it a proper tank after Hodgins explained how bad that is

Hodgins also went with him to pick out things it could hide in

Honestly I’m not really sure

Maybe a hamster when she was young

But never got another pet after it died bc she was so sad

He has two ferrets and and a set of Guinea pigs

Talks to them for hours telling them all the facts that pop into his head

Carries the ferrets around his body (neck, shoulders, arms, etc)

Talks about them like they are his human children

I do not remember writing this but third headcanon from the discord archives (it’s more like a premise for a fic that I will never write than it is a headcanon but it does amuse me greatly so I’m counting it?)

Basically it’s a Jamie/Colin idea where Colin accidentally buys an empty shell at the pet store but he thought he adopted a hermit crab that was very very shy, and Jamie has to keep moving the shell around the enclosure so that Colin will believe it’s alive until Jamie can find an actual hermit crab for him and make the switch. He doesn’t want to break Colin’s heart by telling him it’s an empty shell.

Except Colin realizes one day that it’s empty and thinks it must have escaped, but doesn’t want to upset Jamie, who has been so dutifully checking on the hermit crab, so he also starts moving the shell to different spots to try and pull off the same trick so Jamie isn’t heartbroken over their ‘lost’ pet.

So they are both trying to save the feelings of the other by co-parenting an empty shell. Which is how they somehow end up with 2 hermit crabs after they both try to secretly make the switch.

Colin thinks: “oh our hermit crab wasn’t missing after all, he came back!”

And Jamie thinks: “oh, I guess our hermit crab really WAS just shy and hiding”

Neither addresses that they now have 2 hermit crabs in the tank so they both pretend to think that there have been 2 hermit crabs this entire time.

Basically they are gaslighting themselves and each other via hermit crab

The truth does not come out until several years later, when Colin tells their friends the story about how “and sweet Jamie never realized I tried to replace our pet with another hermit crab.”

Which leads to Jamie shooting out of his seat to yell in realization, “WAIT YOU REPLACED THE CRAB? I REPLACED THE CRAB! Are you saying we both knowingly took care of an empty shell for 2 weeks just to try and sneak a new crab into the enclosure to replace it behind each others backs?”

“I was trying to save your feelings!”

“I was trying to save YOUR feelings!”

Poor Roy just has to sit there and process this information in silence because fucks sake.

I can imagine Percy doing his little escapade to Brainstorm’s enclosure and Drift is just cheering him on to get that Octo pregnant

Maybe Percy also goes to congratulate Ratchet on his 2nd litter of pups with Drift while Ratchet congratulates him with the 2nd clutch with Brainstorm.

Unfortunately Stormy can’t really get out of his enclosure right now with his big belly and all, but when he doesn’t he’s an absolute menace. Favorite activity is visiting Nautica and scaring the hell out of staff.

mhmmm Lost Light research facility… all the mers within were probably rescued after suffering an injury in the wild that they would have otherwise not survived and they're now living it up in luxurious tanks with plenty of food and a lot of initiative to dick around. I like the possibilities. Brainstorm sneaking out of his enclosure and appearing behind unsuspecting staff, scaring the living shit out of them because Holy fuck there is a creature of the ocean in the break room. Swerve being one of the first mers to learn cybertronian solely so that he can talk at to anyone who comes near… Cyclonus being a big broody sea monster and Tailgate a little coral reef fish somehow finding different ways to break into his tank… hermit crab Minimus inhabiting the shell of long dead Ultra Magnus but Magnus and Megatron were the same species so he's accidentally put in with Megs as a kind of “correction program” and neither of them are too stoked about it… Rodimus pressing up against the glass and doing his little tricks because he actually enjoys the attention, pissed off when Thunderclash is added to his tank and steals the visitors' sparks.... And the babies, all the babies, the facility was probably more focused on recovery and possible release back into the wild, not reproduction, so the babies are a big problem, even more so because of the mixing of merformers species, which makes it difficult to get approval to release them in the ocean ecosystem. If, of course, a bonded couple is even willing to let go of their young in the first place, that is…

Wholesome RED Spy Headcanon

So Spy has that cute little crab boi, and that got me thinking..

What if he has a whole collection of pet crabs at his house [in the east coast of America somewhere. Like a summer vacation house type deal.] And they’re fine when he’s gone at work, since he knows an engineer who could build an epic automatic feeder. He takes care of them.

Buries the poisonous ones after they pass. Knows what a crab acts like when it’s old and near death, so he can cook those when it’s time. [Y’all have to remember this is the 1960s-70s and people didn’t humanize animals like they do now]. But in any case there’s a variety to the types that he keeps; and when he does cook one of them, you best believe it lived a good life and was kept healthy.

That being said… Hermit crab tourist traps.

The ones that keep the lil crabs in deplorable conditions and use toxic paints to make them bright and appealing to kids? To seek them to tourists who haven’t studied up on crab care?

I like to imagine that when he comes across these operations, something “mysteriously” goes wrong for them, like all their hermit crabs escaping, police getting involved, their building floods. Stuff like that. And one or two little crabs end up getting new, healthy shells and enclosures at his house.

As for the other types he keeps:

At least one Vampire Crab.

An Atlantic Ghost Crab.

A Red Ghost Crab

A Christmas Island Crab.

A Blue Crab.

A Snow Crab.

Rock Crab.

And a Stone Crab.

There could be more than one at a time for any of these, which is how I explain this:

And honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got under the dock and started chastising the crab like it’s a cat. Like, he’s probably had many over the years, and dealt with crabs escaping and finding backstabbing knives.

I 100% believe they have an L shaped couch that you can put all the square footrests in the middle to create a giant couch bed to watch movies together. I also think they would definitely have a pet, they all share custody of him.

What kind of pet?

Maybe like a giant lizard. Who's also fat because Aurelia keeps giving him too many treats. Aurelia is the treat giver, Adrian is the regular food giver, Iris trims his claws, Quinn talks to him??, Athena gives him baths and cas has to keep his enclosure clean. But then he gets really sad when he realizes Aurelia is gone

Had a bit of a scare with Kraken last night

He was laying slightly out of his shell and not moving, at first I thought he died but saw a little bit of movement. I ended up going to sleep after a few hours of checking on him on and off

I left him alone until today when I saw he moved locations and is seemingly doing fine

I think he molted maybe? It's incredibly dangerous for hermit crabs to molt when right after they are adopted, they don't have the nutrients and a lot of the time it is from stress.

I'm glad he is safe though right now. He still hasn't eaten much though

crabitat critiques? !!!

i was recently acquired four ~1 inch shelled hermit crabs. I work at a pet store, and it was someone coming in at close with them and saying they had nowhere else to go.

This 29 gallon was my cornsnake's baby bioactive enclosure (no isopods!). The coconut fiber is all new, but I left the drainage layer of hydroballs in there. There's a beatup pothos in there and 6 inches of dirt on the higher side (once I have sand it'll be 6" all around). Heat mat and screen lid.

I'm going to get a hygrometer and glass lid, play sand, sphagnum moss, a hamster saucer, and more appropriate shells (i have 7 in there, but many are too small or large, as they were just what I had onhand)

Any other suggestions? They're all purple pinchers and two are in painted shells. I will be going overbudget for the little guys already tho so a bigger tank won't happen for a while.

I've considered asking my responsible pet knowledgable friends if they'd like to adopt a pair of them so its less crowded in my 29gal, but is splitting them into groups of 2 advisable?

I know we all love the idea that Draxum collected turtle babies Raph, Mikey, and Donnie from around the globe than just bought Leo at a pet store…

But!

I propose an even funnier twist on the idea from my own real life experience:

Draxum goes into a pet store and surveys the options. There is not an animal in sight he finds worth mutating, let alone turtles to turn into his prime warriors. So he leaves the store but gets stopped in the parking lot by some random guy standing by a minivan. “You want a pet turtle?” he asks and of course Barry says yes. “My pet turtle had babies and I can’t keep them all. Plus it’s technically not legal to have ‘em as pets or at least sell them anyway. So he’s free to a good home.” No wonder there wasn’t one inside the store, he had picked the wrong spot in the human realm to shop. The guy holds up a small circular to-go tupperware with holes in the lid. Through the clear plastic, Draxum can see a small red-eared slider sitting in a centimetre of water.

“He’s perfect”

My family legitimately got our pet red-eared slider from some dude in the pet store parking lot after leaving the store with my little sister (5ish) upset she wasn’t getting a pet she liked (we had just picked up new hermit crabs for moi). We named him Cannonball and had him for 10ish years before he escaped his summer enclosure in our pond for the last time never to be seen again. He was quite the escape artist, so I have hopes that someone found him in the neighbourhood and took him to our local Public Gardens ❤️

I have a BA degree in medical/scientific illustration and for my senior thesis I had researched, illustrated, and designed a website focused on providing accurate information on proper pet care for hermit crabs 🐚

My mind went to this ^ for my first fact because (in following the same line of "my unending love of small pets that also unfortunately have too much misinformation spread around about their care") I'm in the process of getting ready to get a hamster! Currently I'm working on gathering supplies and putting together a large enclosure to adopt my very first hamster from a local ethical breeder 🐹 New lil baby should be joining our family hopefully sometime in May or June 🥰

Before then though, my partner and I are also currently in the process of planning out our first trip to Japan which will be in about a month and a half from now! I've never traveled internationally except to visit family in Taiwan and China so I'm both very excited and very nervous lol 😬🤗

do you like crabs

When I was 10 there was a kiosk at the mall selling hermit crabs and their shells were painted with fun designs and I just thought they were SO cute and had always wanted pets. I spent months and months saving up enough allowance and birthday money to buy the like $20 cage and starter supplies with two crabs.

Taking them home I was SOOOOOO proud and excited to be a new pet parent and to have something for myself and to have two cute new babies! One of them had Nemo on the shell and one had a smiley face.

I took them out of their cage when I put them in my room and held them, my cute little babies and HAPPY (the smiley one) PINCHED ME SO HARD AND WOULDNT LET GO OMG WTF IS HIS PROBLEM

So from then on I was afraid to interact with them but I still felt responsible for them and liked feeding them and cleaning their cage and picking out new shells for them to grow into etc etc. like they had soooo many choices

Early on I woke up and found Nemo dead. That was super sad and a bit traumatizing to me tbh but I threw him away and got another one

The next one died too and then another, but Happy was always fine. I started to figure out right away that he was killing them to take their shells or something, cuz the psycho was getting WAY too big for his and wouldn’t move

Also I was getting super scared of him. I was starting to leave the dead ones in the cage for longer and longer because I didn’t want to put my hand near him in case he Got Me

Wild that I kept the thing right by the head of my bed

One night I heard a lot of shuffling going on and turned on the light to see Happy OUT OF HIS SHELL (DONT google what hermit crabs look like out of their shell, it traumatized me forever tbh) STABBING AND GOUGING AND KILLING THE OTHER CRAB

I was. TERRIFIED. Didn’t deal with that body for days and days until my mom caught on when the smell started to bother her. I told her everything and how this wasn’t even fun anymore and I was just really scared and wanted this thing gone

We went back to the mall and returned Happy. I remember they asked if I wanted to replace him and I said no, I was done with this whole thing. Anyway they put him right back in the big enclosure with the hundreds of other ones

Next time I went back to the mall the whole kiosk was gone

So I guess you could say my feelings about crabs are a bit complicated
