I...I'm not sure I can explain why this hit me so hard but.
Yuri Gagarin was the first human to Orbit the Earth in 1961. In 1967, the Soyuz 1 crashed on reentry, killing cosmonaut Vladamir Komarov, when the parachute lines tangled. Gagarin had been the back up pilot, and was banned from future space flight after since the USSR didn't want their national hero to also die in a fiery crash.
Less than a year later, he died in a plane crash. (A test flight for a new fighter jet.)
A year after that, the Apollo 11 astronauts set foot on the moon.
They brought with them a little satchel to leave as a memorial. In it were medals to honor Gagarin and Koramov, along with patches for Apollo 1 and the three astronauts who died on that mission.
And something about that just...

Man Enters Space - April 12th, 1996.
"Sixty three years ago today, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alexseyevich Gagarin became the first human in space. On April 12th, 1961, his remotely controlled Vostok 1 spacecraft lofted him to an altitude of 200 miles, and carried him once around planet Earth. Strictly a passenger, his onboard controls were locked out by a secret combination - in case of an emergency he carried the combination in a sealed envelope. After reentry, Gagarin ejected from the Vostok at an altitude of 20,000 feet and parachuted to Earth. How was the first view from space? He reportedly commented, "The sky is very dark; the Earth is bluish. Everything is seen very clearly". Coupled with other spacefaring accomplishments, this flight seemed to confirm Soviet technological superiority - the first US astronaut would not be launched until almost a month later and then on a comparatively short suborbital flight. Born on March 9th, 1934, Gagarin was an air force jet pilot before being chosen for the first group of cosmonauts in 1960. As a result of his historic flight, he became an international hero and legend. Killed when his MIG jet crashed during a training flight on March 27th, 1968, Gagarin was given a hero's funeral, his ashes interred in the Kremlin Wall."

When you made ‘The Cosmonaut’, and I know you used to hear this all the time, but it genuinely helped save me. It gave me peace with my ideation, and ultimately was a part of the skipping stones in the pathway to cracking my egg. Then when you made your coming out video, I bawled in my Ann Arbor apartment, post transition and pre hrt.
I still haven’t seen The Prince, because I’m poor and American and a premium subscription on top of all the other premium subscriptions I have to juggle around isn’t in my immediate future. But I just wanted to say I’m so proud of you, and you’re one of my big heroes. Thank you for everything you do.
Oh wow, thank you so much! That means a lot to me! I'm so glad the show helped you - fly safe!

Please give us som Vlad headcanons!!! :)
Oh boy, you're gonna wish you'd never asked 😆 Long post ahead
🎧 Vlad is a huge fan of 80s synth-pop and new wave. Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, a-ha, and New Order, to name just a few.
🎵 On a similar (quarter) note, music from the late 70s and early 80s is still difficult for him to listen to because it reminds him of the years he was pining for Maddie, the accident, and being hospitalized. Mid-80s music and beyond, when he began to take his life back and build his wealth and power, is his "good old days" music.
🎹 Another music headcanon: In Familiar, I hinted at Vlad being a pianist. I think he'd look pretty hot playing a saxophone, maybe even a trumpet. And Martin Mull is a pretty good guitarist and singer, so Vlad also having those talents would be really cool. But I like to believe that Vlad plays the geekiest, dorkiest, nerdiest, most Slav-coded instrument of all: the accordion. Just imagine him torturing Danny and Sam and Tucker with polka music and ballads about cheese while on a camping trip. Maybe Wulf howling in agony from somewhere in the woods.
🧀 Yeah, he’s basically the negaverse equivalent of Weird Al.
👂 Vlad got his ear pierced in the mid-90s.
🔥 Despite being a fire specter ("having a fire core", to use the phandom terms), Vlad loves the cold. Winter is his favorite season, Christmas his favorite holiday. A bit of a spoiler for either chapter 13 or 14 of Familiar: Vlad is a superb ice skater.
💔 Besides his mother, Maddie was the only woman Vlad ever loved.
🐄 Vlad grew up the son of a poor Wisconsin dairy farmer. His mother was a first-generation Romanian* immigrant. He was the first member of his family to go to college, and on a full scholarship. He has no siblings. (*I may adapt Vlad’s nationality depending upon the story/art/situation, but generally I like to HC him as Romanian, which you can see on his backpack here in this AU.)
👊 Vlad was a victim of bullying in his teen years. Because of his first name and his ethnicity—not to mention his appearance and disposition: skinny, gangly, "ugly", shy, nerdy, poor—Halloween was always a miserable time for him: getting pelted with plastic vampire fangs in the hallways at school; cruel nicknames like "Count Vladislob" or "Vladis-louse"; racist remarks about his Romani mother; "Bleh bleh! I vant to suck your bluud!" It was awful.
✌️ Because he spent so many years being made to feel ashamed of his unusual name, when he became rich and successful after obtaining his ghost powers, he put his name and initial everywhere. V for Vlad.
🏈 Vlad got his love of Green Bay from his father. Apart from a shared surname, it was one of the only two (2) things he and his dad had in common.
🔧 Working on farm machinery like tractors and hay balers was the other. Vlad and his dad would often fix the farm equipment themselves rather than hire a mechanic—mostly out of necessity. Vlad is still pretty good with a monkey wrench, though in college his focus shifted from engineering to physics after meeting Jack and Maddie.
🚀 Vlad grew up in the sixties. Space race, the moon landing, the Cold War. Every kid his age had space fever. Vlad was no exception. His bedroom walls were a collage of stars, rockets, shuttles, astronauts, and cosmonauts. Yuri Gagarin was his hero. He wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up. (Just like Danny.)
🩸 I mentioned this on another post, but I'll add it here, too: Vlad's obsession with gaining more power stems from the trauma and weakness he experienced when he was hospitalized. He made a vow to never be that helpless again.
🪦 Both of Vlad's parents were dead by the time he got out of the hospital. He was estranged from the rest of the Masters family and therefore had no one to turn to.
👶 Because of this, Vlad became obsessed with having a family of his own. Ironically, the accident sterilized him. He will never be able have biological children.
🍪 Some of Vlad’s happiest memories are baking with his mother. He had (and still does have) quite a sweet tooth—and a penchant for cooking.

On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to venture into outer space on a spacecraft.
Tumblr media
That was in fact his only space flight, as he was back-up crew for a later space flight which ended in disaster, and he was banned from participating in any further missions, lest he experience tragedy and Russia lose a hero cosmonaut.
April 12 is now the international observance of International Day of Human Space Flight, also known as Yuri's Day or, in Russia, Cosmonaut Day.
Barbie has herself been an astronaut many times. In fact, it's a top 10 career for her, depending on how you calculate the careers.
Tumblr media
It's really no wonder - space flight has captured the imagination of the human race since well before Yuri Gagarin's initial flight, and continues to this day, more than 60 years later.
Tumblr media
This year, 65 years after Barbie debuted, and 63 years since Yuri Gagarin's first space flight, another astronaut Barbie has hit shelves, and I hazard a guess that it will not be the last.
So onward and upward to Barbie, to her enterprising little sister Chelsea, and to Yuri Gagarin and all astronauts and cosmonauts that followed him.

On 30 June, 1971, the Soviet Union were preparing to welcome the Soyuz 11 team, consisting of Georgi Dobrovolski, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev, back to earth. The cosmonaut heroes had just succeeded in a record breaking space mission - they had spent 22 days in orbit but also occupied the world’s first space station, Salyut 1. Nobody could have anticipated the horror that they found inside - the entire crew were dead with blood coming from their noses and ears. The capsule had de-pressurized during preparations for re-entry causing the crew to asphyxiate. The crew are the only humans to have died outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

Because you seem to know a lot about the Soviet space program: is there an actual reason they gave Ivan Ivanovich a realistic face? Like he was a crash test dummy they literally didn't need to do that
I have no idea, really, but if I had to guess, I guess they would had the cast of the mannequin for other uses with those features already, because why not? It's also possible it was some bored technicians, I remember they wrote "CCCP" on Gagarin's helmet at the last minute so that he wouldn't be confused with an pilot from another country when he landed, and it became standard for Soviet cosmonauts afterwards
For those who don't know who I'm talking about, I am of course talking about Ivan Ivanovich, cosmonaut, first dummy in space, home to guinea pigs and rats, and Hero of the Soviet Union:

For All Mankind, 4
OMG if my gifs did not make you watch this show already then idk dude you are missing out so much
4. …why you should choose to check out the world of this story and choose three gifs that should underline my point.
So, in short, this is the series which shows you alternative reality after the first person on the moon becomes the soviet cosmonaut. Which leads to events in the world go a little differently, here and there you will see information about changes and that's fun to catch btw and see what is different compared to real history, such as John Lenon did not die, it's not important to the plot but it's kinda fun to see what changed in the world in 'for all mankind'. So this change is the beginning of the entire new timeline of the world we live in, where everything is mostly the same but different in some ways. The countries continue fight over everything, and this one shows their fight over the space. Which leads NASA to include women in their program back in 70s, and first season shows us the decade of training and going to the moon. The show is so well made, the visuals are great, but the best part of the show for me are characters. You might hate some of them due to them being the typical people of the decade they live in, but they grow and change. So this is the story of NASA and the people who work there, and we follow them through decades and see how they go to the moon, discover ice there and then the race to the mars begins. Every season shows different decade with the same characters. If you love sci fi and dramas and good characters - that show is for you.
You will have fun moments with big boys being idiots, you will have amazing female characters, you will have characters so dedicated to what they do and their dreams they go through hell and back to do it, there will be moments they have to make tough decisions, choose who lives, you will have heroes who won't live anyone behind, you will have corporations included in the race and what comes with it, politics, being lgbtq+ back in that time, if i say some more i will spoiler you, but you will enjoy it.
there are some dramatic moments that are so good, the cast just gives everything they have to make it work and it is absolutely perfect. joel kinnaman and shantel vansanten just grew so much in my eyes with their work in this show, the moment in 2.03 is like *chef's kiss*, you will know when you watch the show :P
The cast is fantastic, they all play so well, I could go miles about how great they are, but you just have to see it yourself.
Btw, there's amazing video of Jessie Gender which is fun and it is about how 'for all mankind' could be the prequel of star trek, yep, you heard me right :D It's actually really great and has a point, obviously it is not the same universe and the shows are not connected, but it's still fun to watch. And if you love star trek I would suggest to watch their videos in general, they are great.
gifs... ah well, we don't have many gifs done for this show, so I will just use mine which i did so far, this show is about working together for a better future, like, whatever gene roddenberry said back then, if we accept each other and our differences only then we deserve to go out in space. And this series shows us that the progress could be here earlier if we actually were not held by stereotypes and prejudice
1.
Tumblr media
People are what makes this show great, while there are flaws in this show (well, every show has them) I try to look at the bright side, even if you do not like the character in the show you will admit they are well written and the cast did amazing work to make the character work.
2.
Tumblr media
3.
Tumblr media
SPAAAAAACE, you will see the moon, the mars, the fight on the moon, shuttles, rockets, sCIENCE, god watch this show it is so worth it!

173 Influential SCPs
I went to SCPper, found the most upvoted articles by users who've made at least one SCP, and sorted by time. These aren't necessarily the 173 best articles on the site, but I think they're likely to be the most influential. Longtime fans have probably read most or all of these but maybe this could be a starting point for newcomers.
I think sorting by time is important because the Foundation's been around almost 17 years. Writers come and go, trends come and go, new writers are influenced by what came before, and later articles are often longer and more complex than earlier ones. Just sorting by most upvoted bounces you around time; on the main wiki you read mostly series 1 articles then get dunked into SCP-5000. I hope this is a more natural progression, and that by the end people have more context for what's going on.
Using upvotes from writers only is important because the more writers like an article, the more likely later SCPs are to be influenced by it, so those articles are more likely to be important for understanding the wiki as a whole.
I might do an alternate version of this list that replaces the extremely long articles with shorter SCPs.
If you have trouble understanding one of the articles (some of the later ones get LONG), look it up on r/SCPDeclassified. If you would prefer audio narration/explanations, The Exploring Series and TheVolgun are both excellent. And of course, make sure to look in the sidebar on the wiki for guides, lists and explanations.
