Thanks for tagging me @little-desi-historian! ❤️
YES, all of this takes me back to something I wanted to touch a lot more on in my original post when it comes to the historical male image, Percy, Lestat, and Matadors; because it truly does link back to how AMC is playing with dandyism and society's expectations about effeminate men.
Dandyism is a form of resistance culture. As I've said before, Lestat flouts gender norms because HE CAN do whatever he wants & get away with it. His androgyny's on a different level: effeminate or masculine, he's still a vampire, a SUPERnatural creature elevated beyond the bounds of social mores that determine what men & women could or SHOULD act/dress like. MANY people across social media have pointed to Lestat's limp wrists, long blonde "Barbie" hair and ESPECIALLY him dressing in drag in Ep7 as proof that he's the "wife/mother/woman/femme fatale" in Lousta's relationship, and THEN claim its either gender essentialism or homophobic/racist to say Louis is CANONICALLY female-coded one in BOTH the books and show (as AR said so). But no, Lestat in drag was a power move, because he doesn't care what anyone thinks/says/does--he'll just eat them. Mockingly eating the baby in a dress was a deliberate bastardization of motherhood/womanhood. Louis is called every homophobic name in the book by those expecting the black man to just take being insulted, but MARQUIS de Lioncourt DEMANDS being crowned KING of Mardi Gras, Krewe of Raj, & he'll show you exactly what he thinks about your silly homophobic hypocritical human society: You're just "the MEAT," let them eat KING Cake--you're his FOOD. Eff y'all, I'm dressed to KILL you, & laugh doing it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lestat's behavior is not only derived from the time period he was born & raised in (the Rococo era of so-called "effeminate" high class dandies--a la Percy Blakeney, etc). Lestat is the embodiment of PRIVILEGE: a powerful rich white male vampire, who leans into being foreign/French White to excuse anything he does that people find strange/off/unnatural/dangerous--all the red flags. 🚩🚩🚩
And red flags brings me directly back to matadors/toreros.
Tumblr media
@toscrollperchancetomeme
😂 TYSM! Sam Reid dropped so many juicy deets; I couldn't resist! There's so much depth to the Matador outfit, beyond the gendered aspect of bullfighting that I discussed before. Let's go back to what Sam said about Lestat, and delve deeper into matadors:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most iconic apparel worn by toreros ("bullfighters") / matador de toros ("killer of bulls") in Spanish bullfighting is the Traje de Luces, the "Suit of Lights." The colors are usually bright & vivid, as part of the showmanship & pizzazz. Darker palettes are less common, as shiny sequins (the luces/lights) became part of the standard fit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, Lestat's all-black Matador outfit from what Sam called the "villain sequence" in Ep5 seems to be loosely following the style of a different but very closely related outfit, the Traje Campero "Rural/Countryside Suit" aka Traje Corto ("Short Suit").
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(These costumes are typically worn during ceremonial parades and a very specific festival I'll get back to in a moment, cuz it's important.) Unlike the Suit of Light's sequins & silk, the Rural Suit is made of suede, leather, or velvet, in dark muted colors. The pants can be light or dark, striped & patterned, with or without chaps (also found in gentleman's uniforms of military officers and cowboys).
Tumblr media
The trajes originated from "the flamboyant costumes of the 18th-century dandies and showmen involved in bullfighting, which later became exclusive to the bullfighting ritual." (Wikipedia)
The ancestor of both trajes (luces/campero) is traditional 17th-19th century Andalusian clothing (Andalusia being the home of Spanish bullfighting), closely associated with a very particular type of masculine dandyism. (The campero/corto is also the costume worn by Andalusian male flamenco dancers.)
"Before the 17th century the profession of bullfighting did not exist as such, and the fighters did not wear luxurious & shiny trajes de luces, but instead normal clothes of the time according to the social class to which the bullfighter belonged. The first bullfighter trajes de toreros appeared in the 17th century, when professional bullfighters from Navarre & Andalusia wore characteristic garments with their gangs to participate in performances and thus differentiate themselves from other bullfighter bands." (translated/truncated from Spanish website)
In the mid-1700s, Francisco Romero revolutionized professional bullfighting by establishing the first matadors who fought on foot, heroically fighting the bull face to face with swords & the muleta (iconic red flag) in a dance-like performance, dressed in a suede/velvet coleto (jacket), a precursor to the traje campero. Romero (from a carpenter family) wanted to show off & stand out from the nobility, and changed the game entirely, through a form of social resistance-turned-innovation.
"At that time, bullfighting on horseback was more important, which was considered a sport and not a show. Bullfighting on foot was not yet widely recognized." (translated from Spanish website)
Bull-killing on horseback was practiced by Spanish noblemen, attended by lower class assistants on foot. Romero was the first to make on-foot matadors the stars of what was increasingly becoming a dandified show/performance/dance. Matador Joaquin "Costillares" Rodríguez introduced even more showmanship, competing against Francisco Romero's grandson Pedro Romero (famously painted by Goya--bottom right).
Tumblr media
For his matches, Costillares (middle) dressed in flashy silks, threaded in shiny silver braiding; the precursor to modern traje de luces. Like Francisco Romero (left), Costillares wanted to show off & stand out; and revolutionized the male image of the bullfighter through clothes.
In 18th-19th century Andalusian Spain there were 2 types of dandy: the French-imported upperclass petimetre (effeminate dandy), and the indigenous working class majo (masculine/macho dandy).
Tumblr media
Noyes, Dorothy. “La Maja Vestida: Dress as Resistance to Enlightenment in Late-18th-Century Madrid.” The Journal of American Folklore 111, no. 440 (1998): 197–217. https://www.jstor.org/stable/541941
The majo, like many dandies, became the peak of Andalusian fashion, across all social classes; and torero/matador outfits weren't the only ones to take cues from them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
18th-19th century majos "distinguished themselves by their elaborate outfits and sense of style in dress and manners, as well as by their cheeky behavior. The majos outfits were exaggerations of traditional Spanish dress. The style stood in strong contrast to the French styles affected by many of the Spanish elite under the influence of the Enlightenment. Majos were known to pick fights with those they saw as afrancesados ("Frenchified" – fops)." (Wikipedia)
The majos' flamboyant/cheeky/saucy/exaggerated behavior was aggressively masculine; a lower/working class resistance to social mores imposed on them by (foreign) elites, whom they saw as more feminine, and FOUGHT against, to reaffirm their masculinity. These dandies were violent, brazen non-conformists; as beautiful & stylish as they were dangerous. And matadors/toreros knew that the bullfight was the perfect arena to exemplify the spirit of the majos through the dandified performance art/sport of killing bulls--a universal cultural symbol of masculine prowess & strength. Spanish bullfighting used to belong solely to the aristocratic equestrian sphere. Lowly pages/assistants like Francisco Romero (dressed in the precursor to the Rural/Countryside Suit), were the first to buck the system by killing bulls on foot--he likely didn't own a horse. The Romeros were from a carpenter family. Costillares was the son of a butcher. But through bullfighting they gained social status and became icons of masculinity--and dandies.
Lestat--the nouveau riche son of a poor country marquis--insists on being all the beautiful things he is without apology: masculine & effeminate alike. But like I said, it was no coincidence that Carol likened Lestat's Ep5 villain outfit with matadors--he's fighting Louis for dominance in their household, and reaffirming his place at the top of their very gendered social hierarchy, as a warning to BOTH "the housewife" AND "the prodigal daughter" he feels are threatening his authority as their Maker, so he defeats them BOTH.
Tumblr media
Carol Cutshall initially designed Lestat's matador pants as pajamas--loungewear. (Lestat's CASUAL & comfortable in his ability to KILL--matador means "Killer" in Spanish--and remember what I said about Louis & Claudia being put on the same parallel level in Ep5, when Claudia's attacked by "Killer" aka Bruce.) Sam said Carol made several versions of the pants; and yup, they're foreshadowed in Ep5 when Lestat first starts arguing about Louis' depression, then they pop up again in Ep7 during the Murder Plot--two instances @dwreader brilliantly linked Lestat (& Stanley Kowalski) wearing wifebeaters. (Listen, Carol, I just wanna talk.... 😅🔫)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here's my last points about Lestat's matador outfit. First there's the irony of Lestat (who grew up poor in rural France) wearing the something very similar to the matador/torero's Rural Suit, traje campero (aka Short Suit (traje corto)). But what's more interesting is that that type of Short/Rural Suit is usually only worn during special festivals called the Tienta ("trials"), not the regular corrida ("bullfights").
Tumblr media
These Tienta are trials for young and immature bulls to be tested in the ring, to see if they're fit for breeding/fighting. 🤯 FLEDGLINGS. And who's Lestat's young bull? "Built-like-a-bird" Claudia. Who's the immature bull? The "biggest rat eater of them all," the under-developed "botched" vampire Louis. During these trials, veteran matadors can show off their skills; and novice bullfighters are shown the ropes and prove themselves. Like I said: the matador wins again.
Tumblr media
God, even the way Lestat dragged Louis' bloody body out of the courtyard by the jaw/neck resembles the way the defeated bull--bled out & stabbed in the neck--is dragged by the neck out of the ring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And remember what I said about Lestat and FOOD. Cuz what happens to the bulls after the matadors kill them? They're sent to the slaughterhouse to be butchered for FOOD. People EAT the bulls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah, my whole point in this post and my first one is not to sleep on guys like Lestat, Percy--or even other famous dandies like Valmont from Dangerous Liasions/Cruel Intentions (mentioned by both @little-desi-historian and @dwreader)--just because they're effeminate--especially when they're emulating mannerisms from a time period where the model of what made a fashionable gentlemen/good breeding/elite society did NOT match modern expectations about gender. People are getting distracted by Lestat's yaasified manner, not what the show itself is signalling through the relationships he has with others.
This show is deliberately painting Lestat as a villain through Louis' & Claudia's perspectives, as they were the ones who suffered under his Reign of Terror. The symbolism behind the matador-inspired costume used in Ep5 reflected gendered social hierarchies embedded within bullfighting culture (in Spain, women only started being allowed to fight in the 19th-20th centuries). Dressed in clothes resembling that of a matador, Lestat beating & defeating Louis mirrored the defeat of the emasculated bull, and the reification of the victor's masculine prowess at the top of the foodchain.

Hot take but Percy Jackson actually isn't anything like Harry Potter and the reason they're popularly compared is due to the mass mischaracterization and misenterpretation that leads to sanatization of Percy to turn him into a more standard protagonist despite the whole point his character being that he's NOT normal while Harry's is that he IS and that made him into a very bland and lowkey passive aggressive bigot that's an awful example for kids while Percy is the perfect role model.Like let's look them over.Percy:
Was born poor and never becomes rich
Is a child abuse victim with consistent trauma responses and unhealthy coping mechanisms all the way starting at The Lightning Thief
Beat up bullies as a kid,was targeted by them to begin with because he's neurodivergent and his teachers picked on him too
Has nothing but love and respect for his fellow minorities, women especially thanks to being a mama's boy with no positive older male figures in his life except Beckendorf
Is pessimistic, sardonic, anger issued, bad at socializing and gets embarrased to be overly open with his emotions but none of this turns him into a bad person but instead makes him realistic and relatable
And he's also kind, gentle, nurturing to the point of basically adopting younger demigods as his found siblings and pseudo-kids if they don't have positive adult figures in their lives already, encouraging, loyal to a literal fatal fault and has a distinctive and iconic sense of humor that never dosen't land
Didn't like Annabeth or Rachel for shallow reasons and instead for their personalities and only wasn't into Reyna because he was taken at the time and treats all three of them very nicely
Is an instigator who's driving point as our hero is taking down corrupted figures but also does activism for the lesser treated people in his world by helping out every time he gets a chance to,has one of his core trait's being that he's COMPLETELY devoid in power hunger and pretty arguably counts as an anarchist because of this
Relating to the sense of humor thing again, his whole PERSONALITY is distinctive-He's not just some fantasy protagonist,he's PERCY JACKSON.The name alone gives everybody who's read the books flashbacks to all his crazy ass shit(affectionate)and that's how you know you've got a well-written protagonist
And Percy is legitimately transfem-coded,because i've met so many trans women in the Pjo fandom and every single one of them without exception have said that she's a femme trans woman egg. This also applies to black/afrolatino folks and autistics in the fandom like me to a less near universal extent
While Harry:
Grew up middle class and then got riches out the ass when the series started
Is a very poor attempt at positive abuse survivor rep because he uses his mental health as an excuse to a huge dick with no consequences given to him afterward
Had no tormenters other than the Dursleys
A 'dosen't know better and refuses to learn' typa bigot with tons of passive aggressive remarks about girls and ableism and fatphobia thrown in too,not to mention racist moments like hating Dean for dating Ginny
Is the quintessential young male fantasy protagonist and this is exactly his problem because it makes him boring asf and we're dealing with so much fucking damage in the kids fantasy genre thanks to his musty ass
All his crushes were shallow(Only liked Cho for a pretty girljock and only noticed Ginny when she became one too and prioritizes looks and society's idea of 'coolness' on the other girls his age too like damn i wonder why he only ever saw Hermione as a sister, surely it can't be connected /s)
Never does actual justice fighting unless he's required to and don't tell me he shouldn't have needed to because this wasn't real life,it was a magics series so he should've fought evil on purpose like Percy did and so did Katniss Everdeen and the Pevensie Siblings and all the other actual good kids books protags. This genre is supposed to be a power fantasy for kids that they can be heroes too and Harry failed big time at his job just like he did at everything else
Again,he is VERY mediocre as a character but mediocrity sells and now we have a million clones of him instead of real mcs
Is part of exactly zero minorities, neither intentionally or accidentally, and that made him grow up to be a cop.Douchebag ass white straight boy Harry vs Autistic afrolatina transfemme slay Percy. No competition,Percy's punk so she'd kill Harry to earn her blue laces
And before Maraturds and Luke/gods stans get bold, you're literally him irl but worse besties♡

Stares off into the distance:
So.
Apparently my brain is just going to run along with various crossovers. Today, I bring you the thought of a John Wick fusion au (actually five differnet ones) with Batman/DC. (Again: a reminder that all my DC/Batman knowledge is fandom based)
@north-peach hellllppppp
Couple of thoughts for this.
The First: Janet Drake is one of the underworld's best. She's fantastic at manipulation and killing. She could walk herself out of a situation covered in blood, and convince people who saw it all happen that she never touched the body.
Tim grows up at her knee. He learns for the very best. And Janet teaches him everything she can- because despite the job and the crazy hours, and the travel, she loves her son. She wants to give him every opportunity to make it out alive from anything. Unharmed and not in trouble if possible, but alive most of all.
John Wick is a ghost story to the underworld. Tim has always been curious about people who could cause such a stir as his mother or John Wick might. When he meets him, he decides that man is Friend Shaped despite every sign saying Do Not. Despite every horror story saying it's a bad plan. (Much as he will later look at a story in a city of a cryptid said to be a manifestation of a city, a demon, a physical representation of all those who have died unavenged and decide the same)
More than that- John has ZERO idea how to handle Tim. He's a k i d. John's not gonna kill him for just...showing up all the time. It's not like he interferes or causes problems. In fact, he helps sometimes. Provides info, or a direction, a place to crash-
Tim confuses John.
Tim is also the very first to congratulate him, when he manages to get out of the underworld for Helen and mean it. To not even question the 'impossibility' of the Baba Yaga deciding he was done. John didn't bother to ask how Tim knew he'd left and why before the news actually broke out.
Tim watching John get out, go for it and SUCCEED is what gives him the courage to confess to his mother that he wanted to spend some time outside of the underworld, watching the curious case of Batman and Gotham. And Janet loves her son. So she arranges for it to be so.
They both know who Bruce Wayne is. Janet had figured it out before even Tim. She makes him promise that, if he needs her, he will call her, and lets him hunker in Gotham while he does what he wishes. She makes some trips back to Gotham, of course, but not so many that enemies can figure out there's someone important to her there. Janet is THE Femme Fatale. She has plenty of people who would go after her boy. And she's not having that.
Tim doesn't actually PLAN to get involved in vigilante life. At all. He's underworld born and bred. He's a survivor, manipulative, and can be a level of cunning and cold and ambitious that always makes his mother so so proud. He's not a do-right kind of person. He's not someone who does things for people outside of "me and mine" without a reason. Or if it goes against his moral code.
Except Jason Todd becomes one of "Me and Mine". He's a friend. A nosy vigilante who sees that his friend is alone and sets off his instincts as dangerous yes, but also as 'not a civilian' in a conventional sense. He's not a street rat, but he's not...normal either. And Tim? Tim, once he decides this Robin is his Robin, well he can't very well leave him undefended doing this ALONE can he? Though he understands by working with Robin, he cant use the tried and true methods of murder, as it could get pinned to Robin or Batman and he can't have that. If he wants to fly with Jason, he needs to fly by his rules. So a new vigilante is born that runs the streets with Robin. A little more vicious but in a cold and precise manner. Exacting. He doesn't let Jason go after his mother without doing the information gathering, and stops his death by Joker.
For a time, Tim finds himself pulled into the Wayne family, and he...thrives with them. He's happy. He learns under them. Expands his skillset, and still sent out to learn from people around the world. He is NOT fool enough to turn that away- his mother would somehow KNOW wherever she was if he turned down that kind of opportunity and he did not want to imagine the disappointment and response. NO THANK YOU.
When the underworld is kicked like a hornets' nest by John Wick coming back into the fold, Tim is...curious. He's kept an eye on John and Helen, if not stayed in direct and constant contact with them. He hadn't expected John to step foot back into the underworld.
And then his mother sends word to him, calls him back to the Continental, warns that the underworld is getting REALLY kicked up as a result. Tim...needs to go. He cannot imagine NOT answering his mother.
He arranges things on the Gotham end. Says temporary goodbyes and gets to the NY branch asap. Beats his mother there.
Makes it just in time to see John Wick pull a gun on Continental Grounds and shoot a newly crowned seat at the Table and is caught up in the chaos.
His family are going to end UP in the chaos themselves, because they will not cannot leave Tim in it alone. The connections Tim has are MUCH a surprise, he's done very well in hiding exactly what he used to do, and WHY he has a contact and hand in everything, and can ALWAYS get his family what they need. The Second: Tim Drake still grows up at Janet's knee. He learns it all. Thrives in it all. He ends up NOT going down the road of hitman or assassin or any number of things he could have done. Instead Tim Drake chooses to be a Information Broker that claims Gotham eventually, and by means of getting taken in by Bruce, the Wayne Manor and grounds around it become neutral grounds much like the Continental, if you want Tim's services to remain open to you. If you pull the underworld onto the ground...well. Just because Tim goes by Bruce's rules, and just because he PREFERS the route of nonviolence does not in any way mean he would not kill to protect it. To prove a point. To make a statement. To allow one to get away with it is to allow danger to his family and he WILL NOT, no matter that they all are perfectly capable of defending themselves. The Underworld is entirely different than their villains. To not kill the offender is to open themselves to weakness and targets. So Tim WILL.
Gotham is not Wayne Manor. The City is fair game to the underworld. Wayne Manor is NOT.
The Third:
Janet raises her boy at her knee still. Tim chooses the route of Doctor instead. He sets up in Gotham, and decides he likes the foolish vigilantes enough to step in when it's needed and save their lives. He becomes known to the Batfam as a Doc that will not ask questions, but is absolutely one of the most capable people they've seen. If Leslie isn't available, or not close enough, they go to Tim, if Tim doesn't find them, because he certainly seems to know when they need it.
The Batfam does sometimes find him having dealt with Some Things underworld involved so they are WORRIED about their idiot, despite the fact that Tim can and will Wreck everyone that causes problems in his area. He has also shown up stripping off blood covered scrub tops or whatever cause hes coming in hot from another healing thing, and they all wonder and worry and just- it's fine. Everything is fine.
They worry anyway.
Despite the fact that Tim has friends seemingly everywhere, from all walks of life, favors all over, and connections to seemingly everything as a result of his work. (He has absolutely been offered favors as payment, hits, assassinations and all sorts of things. He never turns them away. Janet taught him better. Instead he has markers and logs, books and written promises all stacked away. He remembers them all of course, but better to have written proof somewhere, something official. The Continental holds it for him.
The Fourth:
Gotham HAS a Continental Hotel due to all of its.....everything. Janet Drake runs it. Tim knows EVERYONE and everything, and has absolutely run the counter often. Bruce doesn't know what it is. Ra's absolutely does. Tim is the next to take over the branch and EVERYONE knows it.
He ends up occasionally, when people step on his morals, providing information to the Bat.
Jason managed to find his way inside by accident, and may or may not get himself heavily involved in the underworld even BEFORE the Red Hood thing.
The Fifth:
Same concept as 4 except BRUCE WAYNE runs the Continental and the ripples of everything therein.

Trans fem buggy anon back at it again with the brainrot
Crocodile going Full Mafia Boss Husband is so near and dear to me, but like. That makes Buggy the Mafia Boss Wife.
And I dunno smth about the clichés about that is so wild to me bc I feel like she'd fit that bill so well and yet so very NOT at the same time.
There is One Woman Crocodile Listens To, and it's his wife. He sometimes listens to Mihawk as well, but for different reasons. Mihawk ALSO listens to Buggy for the same reasons as Croc. It's not that Buggy is conventionally powerful, it's a mix of Happy Wife, Happy Life, and Buggy somehow slotting so well into the fold and running the backdrop with both efficiency, flair, and endearing fuck ups.
Buggy absolutely endears herself to many of Croc's business associates, charming them out the ass, and they think this mouthy little clown is a bit of a ditz and doesn't Get It, so they talk more freely around her. None of them catch that little glint in her eye as she listens attentively, making notes to ferry back to Crocodile and Mihawk both. Oh? You have big plans in the future? A loan, you say? Oh well golly, yes, I've been there before, teehee, tell me more, mister~
She has more dirt on the underbelly organizations than most can fathom, all locked up nice and neat in a code written lovingly in her fluffy heart shaped neon blue and green notebook.
She plays the role of eye candy well, and she likens it to playing on stage.
Behind the scenes, she's mouthy, bold, sharp, and useful, learning the tells and systems, realigning her general management with this new information, much to her husbands' surprise. Crocodile absolutely spoils her and Mihawk both rotten, but it's a mutual affair.
Buggy just having these wildly powerful men wrapped around her finger.
((And her fans/underlingsbare just gobbling it up bc THAT'S THEIR CAPTAIN, yeah captain Buggy is a QUEEN and she is SO GOOD AT THIS WOOOOO-))
MEANWHILE
The world government: she's a clown. Wait she was Roger's? Okay. Alright. A threat. We can mitigate this. A warlord - shit. Fuck the warlord system is going down. Oh God. Okay. Uhhh. We'll just drop a bounty. Yeah. That's good - Oh. Oh my God. Holy fuck did she just recruit MIHAWK and CROCODILE?? Okay. Emperor, then. It's fine. This is fine - THEY'RE MARRIED?!?!? WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?
The whole mafia concept with Cross Guild just fits so well. I mean, you've seen Crocodile already, he was literally made for that scenery. Crocodile and Mihawk may handle the money and men, but Buggy as a "trophy wife who looks dumb but actually knows what's going on all the time and keeps pulling the strings" is just amazing. Crocodile listens to two people only and he trusts them with his life. Buggy might seem like only a sexy bimbo clown but she actually could murder somebody violently on the spot and both Crocodile and Mihawk would stare at her with pride and then buy her all the things she wants. She's actually extremely strategic and intelligent and she's pretty much the one who makes all the plans since she knows the most about everybody they need to take advantage of.
And it's not even the dynamic which, I mean, it's pretty obviously a mafia dynamic but-- The whole aesthetic too? These three are just constantly giving "mafia boss x femme fatale wife x mysterious murderous husband". Crocodile sitting at his desk, Mihawk by his side and Buggy sitting on his lap? The image won't leave my head. It's just so, so good for them.
Not to mention that the Marines are all extremely frightened of this trio and Buggy's history and won't even dare to come close to them because they don't even know how the hell this relationship happened. And it's concerning and scary and they might end up dead if they approach them.
But yeah, this whole thing lives in my mind rent-free all the time and this is exactly how I imagine them. Cross Guild is just a mafia and Buggy always gets what she wants because she gets the job done and both Crocodile and Mihawk genuinely love her to death. Like literally. Don't touch her. You'll die.

fascinating can you do janus since you talked about him?
*cracks knuckles* Absolutely!
Janus is deception, deceit in it's finest- a smooth-talking person who keeps everything close to his chest. In canon his outfit hides everything but his face- which are covered in scales, making it easy to overlook everything else when that's distracting enough. BUT! He's also way kinder than people give him credit for and his goals align with wanting to protect and keep them all safe and happy too.
Janus gives me SO many fun vibes, but to me it boils down to "immaculate presentation hiding frustrated only-sort-of-reformed-villain that wants you to treat yourself to extravagant things because you deserve it". He wants to be a good guy but it feels like it's his nature to be a manipulative shit. He is a femme fatale, a bond villain, a sassy aunt who talks shit about everyone, strange caregiver, and aesthetically he is a diva.
Inspiration 1: That video of the guy who is a good guy talking like a villain
His outfit in the series screams villain but he's CONSTANTLY trying to make good reasonable points so this has to be a good place to think about it first.
Inspiration 2: Femme Fatale
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Classy and refined, Femme Fatales use their looks and words and charms to get what they want, often at the cost of other people. Janus ultimately is a femme fatale in that he is trying to get what he wants and he tends to be smooth about it (this breaks sometimes but for the most part).
When thinking about Janus, seductive is a word that works well for him. He leans into that enticing seduction. Don't you want this? Don't you want to be like this or do this? Wouldn't it be so nice to be convinced~? While Roman is an effeminate romantic side, Janus is the one not afraid to wear the dresses and be the diva. Honestly he and Roman would be so good together flaunting dramatic diva takes if they could get past their bullshit.
Inspiration 3: Spy movies and heist movies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Janus dresses in a hat and gloves like he doesn't want to get his hands dirty. Spy movies have such a mysterious and enticing feel to them. To me deception isn't just about lying, it's about convincing people that lies are true for the purpose of achieving something. Obtaining something, changing something, doesn't matter which, spies and Janus go hand in hand in my brain. Likewise, heist movies are all about precision and timing and the perfect culmination of a plan coming together. Ultimately this is what Janus WANTS to emulate. What I think he would WANT to be. Convincing and suave and charming about it. Does he come across this way? Not 100% but it's a good place to look.
Inspiration 4: Lion King
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(bottom image source: FantaTara )
Back again with Lion King, but you can't think about Thomas's sides without thinking about Disney. One Disney Villain comes to mind when I think about Janus, and surprisingly it's not Jafar, it is instead Scar. A lion who didn't get the recognition he craved, a lion whose plotting and scheming got him very far. Mark on his face? Check! Smooth-talking? Check! He is more about wits and words than strength and Janus is just like that.
So we have a person who is suave and cunning, talks a big talk, villain-coded, selfish, scheming and wants to help but uses dirty tactics to do so if he has to, all while wearing a very put together outfit.
Inspiration 5: Decadent parties and backroom poker
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Janus has a vice it is partying in excess and living his best life without a care for the consequences other people experience. Old fashioned cocktail parties, wine and booze, illicit backroom poker games and rigged playing cards, gossiping while he drinks his 16th cocktail and yet hiding himself behind a facade of totally having it together.
Inspiration 6: Chess
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Janus is always playing a game, and it's a game of wits for everyone he is around. Every word he says and everything he does feels like a plotted out game and everyone else is a player.
Inspiration 8: Biblical stuff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can't get rid of the biblical iconography with the snake man, but I chose less to look at the snake as "bad evil horrible sinful" and chose instead to look for images I could use to inspire me the opposite way.... angelic figures tending to or being kind with snakes because ultimately a snake granting knowledge isn't necessarily a bad thing to every belief system, so perhaps that vice-chasing isn't so much evil as selfishness is also not evil. A dichotomy that reflects in his scales- they continue down his entire body on that half. They should always be a prominent feature highlighted by the under eye redness. He is not fully human and that should be shown.
Things that became a must for me:
Keeping him fully clothes most of the time. This also gives into the "snakes are cold" vibes.
Must remain sleek and elegant
If he must show skin, the scales have to be shown off
Adding extra features to his outfit- splashes of yellow that remain refined and potentially softer things thrown in to look less threatening under all the outer presentation layers. Even AUs should do this.
Jewelry or accessories must be sleek and minimalist to be less distracting, but overall can be expensive. Hats are allowed to be big but will always slant and will not be too decorated.
Janus must have expressions of suave mystery, enticing allure, or like he's judging your outfit choice.
Hair is not as fluffy or as wavy- simpler and less distracting and cover his human eye because it's not as important.
Often depict him without his hat when trying to make him more approachable- the hat feels like him hiding more. Likewise do the opposite- often depict him cut off in some way to highlight the snake aesthetic and make him seem more mysterious.
So I ended up with this:

Truly insane the sheer amount of emotion he can convey with his face while looking this slutty. He has a knife attached to his leg which is the single most femme fatale coded thing a character can do, but also, just the look on his eyes can make me feel his heart beating faster and the mix of fear and disgust and sadness and the heavy burden he has carried on his shoulders for most of his life and the feeling that this might be his chance to finally get rid of it, which won't actually bring much relief, and won't make anything better, but it's necessary, 'cause his sole reason to live is just to get rid of this burden and exact his revenge and god someone really should help this man. No wonder charles is about to jump off the ship to go rescue him

a random headcanon that is not supported by the text? a random headcanon that IS supported by the text? also, thoughts on astrid and schools of magic? i think fanon consensus is that she's an illusionist because of how she uses changeable glamors at the dinner (and mercer twitter lore is that glyph chant is reskinned bladesinging, so she has those stats when her glyph chant is up) and illusionist astrid is compelling so why not, but i have seen arguments for why other schools would also be interesting.
weirdly i haven't thought very much about astrid's subclass. i'm instinctively fond of evoker astrid because i love when she does big ugly damage and i like the idea of academy bren and astrid in direct collaboration/competition but. okay let me spitball for a minute. misogyny is obviously a little different in exandria, but from a real-world perspective illusion is a very feminine kind of magic. In a lot of historical contexts it is the worst thing a woman can do, see "art" and and artifice as signs of deceptiveness, moral degeneracy and promiscuity, feminine lack of mental fortitude, "God hath given you one face and you make yourselves another", etc. Illusionism makes you femme fatale coded by default.
So there's something very interesting about illusionist astrid bc i don't actually think we have any reason to believe she relies on weaponized femininity. She's hard and mean and severe and handsome and she goes by "Master". I think Bren was far more charismatic (and prettier), and far more reliant on it--Caleb in-campaign has that 16 CHA, he actively uses essek and lucien's attraction to him to get what he wants, he is a con man when we first meet him, he can really turn on charisma and charm when he wants to. Caleb has to consciously turn it on, but i don't think Bren did, I think he was just a very charming and pretty young man.
So what that would mean for an illusionist astrid is that bren left, and she sort of became a mechanical imitation of him, not naturally suited to that kind of soldiery but she's a good wizard, she's a quick study, she can put her mind to it. In a lot of ways Astrid was forced to be a less-good version of Bren, the second choice, not the son student her father master wanted. And she knows this. Trent says it to her face in 110. It's true right up through the end when she gets the assembly appointment only after it is offered to Caleb.
To answer your supported-by-the-text headcanon question, i think maybe she expected to be an evoker and switched paths, probably at trent's behest, because ultimately her magic and study is not for her personal interest, she doesn't get to be a self-obsessed wizard like wealthy mages do. she's an employee. her magic is a weapon and it is owned by the man who writes her paycheck, it will be developed in whatever way he thinks is most useful for the empire.

I see your "jason is girl coded because he uses guns" and raise you "jason is girl coded because he uses/used poison" which is seen as a more traditionally feminine way of murder. nothing will be better than when that trafficker had jason by the throat only for jason to flirt with him and for jason's poison to kick in immediately after *chef's kiss* jason femme fatal
(also, because I could literally write an essay about jason being girl coded, Jason's status as a fridged character. killed off to serve as man pain for almost 20 years with little focus on who he actually was? yeah.)
Yes fucking absolutely anon. Guns are the modern equalizer but poison has been the feminine weapon of choice for eons because it is sneaky so you aren't vulnerable while using it, it is fatal, you are here for a goal and not just as a symbol, it does not rely on physical strength. I found that choice so interesting while reading lost days too. Because the typical story is of the student surpassing the teacher and beating him in his own craft and Jason? Jason has no need to prove himself as being above Egon. Jason doesn't doubt his ethical superiority to Egon and he does not see the need to prove his worth in Egon's eyes. And that is so typically female again. Because a woman knows she can not prove herself to the man, so she skips that part and is purely pragmatic.
And yes please write essays about this actually and if anyone else wants to do metas about Jason being girl-coded then please feel invited to @ me, because I will love to read them and no we don't have to be friends or mutuals for that, this goes for literally anyone.

Why do so many JGY stans see him as “female-coded”? I get that he’s associated with his mother Meng Shi a lot in the narrative but to me it’s more like he embodies what she could’ve been if she had male privilege.
It's complicated and due to a lot of reasons and, I think, depends on what you mean.
Part of it is generic fandom nonsense that has been around since forever where the smaller/younger guy in any ship is the bottom/girl, and his actual personality gets overwritten to fit into fandom tropes. The narrative makes a big deal out of jgy being smaller and less physically powerful than the other members of his triad, people latch onto this with yaoi goggles, and it gets stupid fast.
Part of it is racism. There's been a trend lately, which i think started with kpop people and has breached containment, of (white, western) tumblr users seeing slim East Asian men with pop star makeup or long hair or purple lighting and deciding they must be feminine, gender non conforming, trans, non binary, ~gender~ or whatever. It's even worse if the guy is shorter and/or has a cute face. Zhu Zanjin has a cute face, his character is small, you see where this is going. And seeing East Asian men as feminine has a long history in anti-asian racism.
Part of it is ignorance/racism. Chinese masculine archetypes are not the same as western ones, and Chinese masculinity doesn't look like western masculinity. The scholar-official is a Chinese masculine archetype (I believe. I may be wrong about this, as I am not Chinese, so please take what Chinese bloggers have to say about this more seriously than what I am saying) and Jin Guangyao seems, to me, to be very much a scholar-official. His hat is extremely masculine/professional (like a necktie) but western audiences just think it's silly or related to his mom. His elegance, delicacy, lack of physical prowess compared to the others around him, read as effeminate to a western audience, but are absolutely masculine in his own context. This happens with nie huaisang a lot too, where because of his flightiness and artyness and specifically his fan, he gets read as effeminate. Fans, however, were a masculine accessory, specifically for the scholar or the artist, which, again, are masculine types. Feels very similar to how bookish Jewish men get read as effeminate by white gentiles, meanwhile The Pinacle of Manhood in Ashkenazi culture has, historically, been the Rabbi or the scholar. But yeah, a lot of it is people not thinking about him in context.
Part of it is that the way he is overlooked, forced to be So Polite to people who are approaching him with violence in order to survive, the people-pleasing, the deference, and, specifically, the way other characters read malicious sexuality into everything he does, when he is doing everything he can to not suggest that and how uncomfortable he is with that, the hypercompetence being taken for granted and overlooked, the working his ass off and getting no credit and then getting chastised when he points that out, the way he's subject to violence by people larger and stronger than him and told "well just don't make them mad," the way he has to be so careful about any hint of sex surrounding his public persona because that is all it will take for people to tear him apart, while not being an experience exclusive to women by any means, is extremely familiar to a lot of women, and so a lot of women and people who caucus with women relate to him in a very particular "oh same hat" kind of way. It's worth noting that none of the other male characters in the story really have this kind of thing going on. It's only him. Some have pieces of this but not the whole thing, so it starts to look specific to something inherent in the character, so.
Part of it is that his character gets a certain shitty treatment from a lot of fandom that you usually only see applied to female characters. Like. People really love to make him a Vamp, a Seductress, a Femme Fatale, a Manipulative Gone Girl Type, a Bitchy Sassy type, and read everything he does in this way. So many """"fix-its""" for him are some variation on "just keep him barefoot pregnant and in the kitchen," but it's "this time he is too busy getting dicked down to scheme," and like... it's weird? This is where you get people talking about the "jin guangyao specific misogyny." because like. He's not a woman, but fandom treats him like a Despised Female Character and it's very weird.
Hope that answers your question.

So far asking for textual queerness in Dracula media since it's not the 1890's or Hays Code era anymore to self-censor as much is a monkey's paw, because so far we've got: 1) "bi-homicidal" Dracula in love-hate with woman Van Helsing 2) queer Lucy who punishes Mina for not loving her back and gets killed by Dracula over this (and for being the promiscuous sapphic trope in two cases)
I'd rather have the
You cut off there, bud. I'm guessing you're saying you'd rather have unhealthy straight than unhealthy queer dynamics displayed. I'd just rather have good media.
Yeah, I don't enjoy the tendency of casting queer people as these evil, corruptive, predatory creatures rather than... ya know. Human beings. I feel like the tendency of making queer people just straight-up awful is probably left over from when we could get no representation whatsoever. In order to publish stories featuring themselves, queer people had to write morally dubious/evil queer characters that always die in the end. That's fair. Until you get straight people writing those fucking stories so they can claim diversity whilst also shitting on anyone not cishet, white, and Christian.
So, "bi-homicidal" Dracula... it's telling that they felt the need to make VH a woman. Not only a woman but just a very strange and homophobic woman. Agatha van Helsing would corner a gay couple and harass them until they told her who was the bottom and who was the top. Everything about the Dracula miniseries was annoying. It's telling that they were so uncomfortable with the bi part of bisexual that they killed Jonathan off in the first episode and replaced him with a woman. AND IT IS VERY TELLING that they gave all the queer characters and the characters of colour the most unnecessarily brutal deaths. HMMM MOFFAT.
It's because of heteronormativity that Dracula had to switch from Jonathan to Agatha. The bisexuality is less representation, and more of a crutch. Dracula can switch off his attraction to men whenever the straight male writers get too uncomfortable with it, but whenever they need it for a horror scene, he can turn it right back on.
Lucy who punishes Mina is just promiscuous Lucy but reclaimed as a "girlboss". It casts sapphic people as predatory, it casts bisexual people as more promiscuous and willing to cheat and homewreck, it's annoying. You can write a story where Lucy is queer (in fact, most do, but they just make that part of the sexual deviancy of the Bloofer Lady), but because of the rule that you're not allowed to depict healthy relationships onscreen because they're "boring", we get this shit. Lucy's just Dracula at that point. She's the replacement Dracula who gets punished by the actual Dracula for stealing his idea.
The issue here is adaptations' refusal to have Lucy be the sweet young woman she is in the book. No adaptation can accept more "submissive" or "girly" girls, they have to be subversive and manly (but not in a butch way, never in a butch way). Women have to be overtly sexual and sarcastic and just basically toxic men but with tits. The only way to be femme in a movie is to be a femme fatale who objectifies herself to? Get back at men? Great plan. But sometimes you don't WANT to be fatale, you just want to be fucking femme and kiss your girlfriend. But since these movies are made with only the male gaze in mind, you can't.
And listen, I know someone's gonna blame me if I keep begging for Holmward and then an adaptation comes out where Jack like... I dunno, kills Lucy so he can have Arthur all to himself, but that's just the cards we're being dealt here. The solution isn't to settle for eating shit, it's to demand something better than the shit on our plates. It's not our fault for asking for representation. We aren't inflicting this upon ourselves. If I asked for a movie about an ace person and Hollywood responded with a movie about a sex-repulsed serial killer who kills people who have sex, THAT ISN'T MY FAULT. THIS ISN'T A MONKEY PAW SITUATION, THIS IS JUST BAD WRITING. I'm not being karmically punished for challenging the laws of nature, mainstream media just sucks in terms of representation.

this is literally all i've been thinking abt like fr
Tumblr media
below the cut r my written notes bc they probably aren't legible but basically. davey spiderman. kath is veeeery harry osborn-coded. jack is cool friend/hot guy mary jane. antics will ensue. and then we have race crutchie and spot ofc:
davey: IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER THAN DAVEY "MOUTH' JACOBS SPIDER MAN. literally there isnt...
he fits the spiderman a little closer to miles than peter in terms of like.... the difference in tragedy in his life and especially how miles handles tragedy compared to peter. and also davey has a better support system of ppl who know off the bat. i think sarah would be cool as the "guy in the chair" role that's so funny to me... their comms banter>
jack: FEMME FATALE DAMSEL IN DISTRESS MJ JACK KELLY. IS such a look.
I'm mean and would give him a symbiote arc tho.
for now he's Spectacular!MJ in terms of vibes...
she's very smooth when she and peter meet and i think jack could embody the "future star of the stage" kind of persona but as an artist not an actor. as for why i'd give him a symbiote moment... mostly bc i don't think it fits davey very well as in idt his anger can be taken advantage of like jack's can and jack's desperation can. jack is not immune to manipulation like davey is LMAO... jack's desperation to protect ppl when he personally is in a bind isss... it is strong.
kath: KATH IS QUITE LITERALLY HARRY OSBORN. LIKE. BFFR. Thinking maybe spidey saves her and it's a scene and pulitzer gets protective in a fucked up way and like. Has her under lock and key afterward.
better yet if davey saves her almost accidentally/preemptively bc that's his best friend katherine but she didn't need saving, and since she was saved, (and pulitzer is a dick,) would totally not let her out of his sight/his company's sight as much as possible.
and tbh i'd probably keep the norman osborn alignment and make pulitzer a scientist while kath goes against this by being a journalist/someone who excels at humanities.
racer: RACE IS BLACK CAT IN MY HEART. could be Jack though.
bc jack is soooo... like he would. but race and stealing things and being snarky and feeling entitled to it is so true...adding some mobster flair to a homme fatale.. yea. ESPECIALLY because-
spot: SPOT IS VERY INSOMNIAC WRAITH. LIKE- VERY.
wraith is a character who is originally a cop.../at least one of the wraiths is initially a cop that works w spiderman and then becomes an occasionally murderous vigilante/punisher-esque character. which is rather extremely spot conlon. also it'd give race and spot rly good banter
now maybe my fav of them all- crutchie: Crutchie as a 20yr old pre-med researcher -> Dr. connors/the lizard moment. Also mentor Crutchie>>
i also think the injection thing would be more of an accident than a like...solution. like i think he's got his prosthetic and he's chill w it and is researching lizard limb regeneration for a final project and there's a the flash-in-the-chem-lab accident. but mainly crutchie being like 19. knew davey & jack & kath while he was in high school with them. very initial eddie brock is spectacular spider-man basically lets be honestt
anyway yeah this has been driving me. up a wall

day 2 of trying to piss off the sonic fandom so i either get blacklisted or blocked by as many people as possible:
the people who turn rouge into “the bestist lesbian big sister to shadow for ever and ever” are not as progressive as they’d like to think they are.
congratulations, you are reducing a female character to the bettering of a more popular male character, focusing exclusively on one dimension of her personality and rejecting the rest to make it wholesome and cute.
doesn’t seem so different from the people who would only focus on her sexuality in the 2000’s, does it?
listen. you can have your lesbian big sister rouge just like people can have their sex symbol rouge. they can also coexist. HOWEVER. do not pretend like this fanon interpretation does any justice to the nuanced layers of her character.
what about her selfishness? her commitment issues? her self preservation disguised as brashness? her lack of moral stability since she always puts herself first? ignoring the total disregard for her femme fatale disposition, the people who reduce her to a sibling dynamic are completely disregarding how canonically horrible at this she would be. her and shadow are coworkers, yes, and it’s evident she cares about him (in whichever way you choose to interpret that) but she is far from responsible for him. even if she wanted to be, episode shadow proves he completely disobeys orders and doesn’t regard her as a support system lol.
in case anyone is questioning why i keep including lesbian in my description, it’s because of the shipping can of worms. self admittedly, my rouge is bisexual, but that’s besides the point. the reason why the whole “lesbian rouge, gay shadow” makes me raise an eyebrow is because it is almost ALWAYS to eliminate any possibility of them having romantic feelings for each other, and additionally, so shadow’s big sister is also in a gay relationship because clearly he is gay and only gay and therefore rouge is a lesbian. since we need her to be in a gay relationship too we’re gonna ship her with wave, who is a lesbian as well because she wears pants and is mean, and that means we have a scapegoat wlw ship for the REAL focus— shadow and his boyfriend.
do you see what i’m insinuating here? do you see the fanon trend (which is not exclusive to sonic) and are you getting the bigger picture here? i’ll elaborate more on this when i dedicate a day to dissecting amy rose as a character but for now, let’s brush past this sexuality business and onto one more teeny tiny point
hey. so. a lot of people consider rouge to be racially coded as black. now, does anyone see a potential problem of having a black coded female character be this strong, independent, tough, maternal/sisterly caretaker for people? no? nothing historically bad about the caricature of older black women being “no nonsense” babysitters for people? or black women being strong and independent who don’t cry or have softer vulnerable sides? hm? any pancake products coming to mind? and before someone says i’m reading too much into this, i’m not calling anyone outwardly racist. i just think that it is unfair to women but especially black women to not only reduce a coded female character to a caretaker for the male main characters, but especially in the ways which people go about this. ANYWAYS
yeah. do whatever you want with rouge, but don’t think i haven’t had my eye on the ways in which she’s mischaracterized almost exclusively for shadow’s own character development. stop using female characters as tools or resources for male characters. i don’t care if it’s through gender or race or sexuality, there is some serious bastardization going on here and i am appalled when people who scoff at sexy rouge go on to do shit like this thinking they’re “saving” her character from everyone else. no. i actually think you’re just as bad as them, fight me i guess
note: i’m not attacking anyone as a person, i’m attacking the general fanon phenomenon. this isn’t about a particular creator or their work, this is about the way rouge is treated by the fandom as a whole. people can make whatever they want, and in the same vein, i can call it fucking stupid. if you’re offended or think i’m an asshole though, even if it’s just for doing this and you’re not involved with fanon rouge, block me. please. i’m actively trying to get rid of people and this helps.
