Sword from Westness, Scotland dated between 800 - 1000 on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, Scotland
This sword was buried with someone in Westness in Orkney which during the early medieval period was the Earldom of Orkney, a dependent territary of the Kingdom of Norway. The Viking settlers there intermarried with the local Scottish people forming a Hiberno-Norse identity which can be seen even to this day in the Orcadia language.
In regards to the burials, they were a mix of Scandinavian, Scottish, Christian and Pagan styles. The Scandinavian burials are often in boat shaped graves and had weapons such as this sword alongside the deceased.

can I request some more Irenor? either regular or with fem!Ireland🩷also maybe you could tell us some fun facts about ireland and norway historically?🫢
Sure! ✨
Historically Ireland and Norway has not had much interaction due to being controlled by other countries, but during the Viking Age they had a lot of contact! Funnest fact: Norwegian vikings founded Dublin. Norwegian settlers at this point established several ports and cities in Ireland and would regularly fight with the Irish locals, but the Norwegians mainly kept to the coast as they were more interested in trade and boats. At one point Denmark tried to take the Norwegian settlements but were quickly beaten and they remained under Norway's rule. Over time the vikings integrated into the society and there were many Norwegian men who would end up with Irish women. This contact ended up creating the Hiberno-Norse style, a blend of two cultures, of Celtic and Norse ideas and expressions, something we can see in archaeological material today.

mustelid monday!
I had a couple of requests for ferret pics ( @weirdsociology @stripedroseandsketchpads ), so here goes. I’m not putting them under a cut because everyone deserves to enjoy them :)
Also I stg they are different ferrets, but yeah, working out who’s who does often involve a process of elimination. The first four are siblings, who were referred to as the pirates because they came to the rescue from Penzance. So they have pirate names.
1) Gráinne Mhaol (aka Grace O’Malley aka Not-the-Face Grace), scourge of soft plastics, bullyer of brothers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Somerled, a good Hiberno-Norse pirate name for a lilttle berserkr. He wants to eat you. In a mostly friendly way.
Mostly.
Tumblr media
3) Longjohn. Because ferrets would love to be allowed to go up your long-johns! And you’d almost trust this lad, he’s a sweetheart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4) Hook. When he decides to hook those teeth in BOY do you know about it. But mostly he’s just a big lazy potato. Too beautiful for boiling, mashing, sticking in a stew.
Tumblr media
5) Frobisher. Not a pirate! The only chap we still have from the Arctic exploration gang (we had a Tuunbaq and Lulik (<pualulik, an Inuk word for a baby seal that I probably made meaningless by splitting like that, but we liked the sound and it suited her).
Frobisher is the kind of guy who would get excited about iron pyrite and you’d just have to have a mutiny against him. The most pathetic wet rag of a ferret. But we love him. He thinks everyone’s out to bully him, when really they just want to use him as a comfy pillow, which he’s ok with.
Tumblr media
6) Calico (aka Cally). This boy’s got Fashion - not an albino! But he did come with the pirates, so he gets a pirate name. The rescue mostly palmed albinos off on us because they’re slower to get adopted, while we don’t mind what colour they are. But Cally’s allergic to Outside, so he had to come with us and be an inside ferret. He’s got sqeaky lungs and he loves to cuddle :3

Playing a little bit with the styling here--the Dublin cap is more Hiberno-Norse, the pleated serkr is more Swedish/potentially Slavic, and the longer smokkr/hangerock is perhaps more Finnish, but even if it is something of a cultural mishmash, I think it's a nice outfit.

In my research, I discovered that in 2028 during the construction of a new hotel, the remnants of an 11th-century settlement were found., This settlement was similar to the one found at Wood Quay in the 1970s. Artefacts found at both settlements were moved to the National Museum of Ireland and construction continues. At Wood Quay now Dublin City Council offices stand and on Dean Street, where a centuries-old settlement once stood, now stands another hotel. The first part of my project focuses on combining this Hiberno-Norse community with a modern-day hotel
They both represent the beginning of a Hiberno-Norse community in Ireland. These were some of the first settlements that would later become the Dublin we know today. These settlements were created by migrants. I thought it would be interesting to point out the irony of how proud our city is of its Viking origins in spite of a growing movement of racists and fascists who are terrified of “Military men” entering their country.

"Genetic evidence shows that most DNA lineages found among Icelanders today can be traced to the settlement of Iceland, indicating that there has been relatively little immigration since. This evidence shows that the founder population of Iceland came from Ireland, Scotland, and Scandinavia: studies of mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosomes indicate that 62% of Icelanders' matrilineal ancestry derives from Scotland and Ireland (with most of the rest being from Scandinavia), while 75% of their patrilineal ancestry derives from Scandinavia (with most of the rest being from the Irish and British Isles)."
"Controversial results of recent carbon dating work, published in the journal Skírnir, suggest that Iceland may have been settled as early as the second half of the seventh century. The Íslendingabók of Ari Thorgilsson claims that the Norse settlers encountered Gaelic monks from a Hiberno-Scottish mission when they arrived in Iceland. There is some archaeological evidence for a monastic settlement from Ireland at Kverkarhellir cave, on the Seljaland farm in southern Iceland. Sediment deposits indicate people lived there around 800, and crosses consistent with the Hiberno-Scottish style were carved in the wall of a nearby cave."
yes i copy pasted some paragraphs from wikipedia to tell you all why I like to think Molly is Ari's mother what about it?

Full Name: Lellain Bratriani
Nickname: Loki, Hermes, Funny Man, Lathyros, Joker, Son Goku, Saru, Little Boy Blue
Age: 20
Gender: Transmasc (He/Him)
Orientation: Het
Height: 4’5
Species: Otacaian (Opar-Han)
Nationality: Ulgardian
Occupation: Gunsmith, Gunner
Alliance: The Jade Owls
Alignment: Protagonist
Theme Song: Overload by Life of Dillon
Character Song: Kaidoku Funou by Jinn Instrumental
Voice Claim: Ryuji Sakamoto from Persona 5 (Max Mittelman)
About
Lellain grew up in a large, male dominated family in Ulgard in the Golar Sodality. Although assigned female at birth, he always felt that he was male. As he grew older, he began to have more and more conflicts with his grandfather, the head of his family, over this. These conflicts came to a head when Lellain turned 17, he came to a town meeting wearing pants to humiliate his grandfather after a fight. Enraged, Lellain's grandfather ordered the males of the family to beat Lellain up and shave his head, which they did. He was then subsequently thrown onto the street and disowned by his family. Only one family member, his aunt Naane, who was also disowned by the family for her unconventional nature as a female took him under her wing and together, they left the Golar Sodality for parts unknown. Years after that horrible event, Lellain met Suri and she instantly became a big sister figure towards him. He was attracted to her because she was trans too and he never met anyone like him before. She helped him adequately transition by stealing money to get top surgery for him and giving him special herbal supplements which deepened his voice. Lellain was beyond grateful to Suri for doing this for him and their bond remains strong, even after they did crimes together, got arrested by the Jithran Senate together, staged a jailbreak and stole a prototype prison ship together and...formed The Jade Owls together. Lellain is now the gunsmith of the Falaina, managing and repairing its defenses, especially its guns and cannons!
Personality
Russell often compares Lellain to the Norse God Loki or the Greek God Hermes. Lellain is a rowdy, loud, exuberant, mischievous guy who just has a penchant for teasing and pranks. Despite his cheerful nature, he can let his past get to him and he can have days where he can be serious and grouchy. He can have super low lows and really high highs.
Miscellaneous
Lellain speaks with an accent which, to Human ears, sounds like a mixture Hiberno-English and Scottish English (similar to Jacksepticeye and Scrooge McDuck)
Lellain has the power of Terrakinesis, meaning he the ability to manipulate elements derived from the earth. He can levitate rocks and stones, compress earthly matter, carve stones, create permanent impressions in solid rock, he also has powers over salt, gemstones, crystals, lava, and coals. He also has the ability to create small earthquakes.
Lellain is the Jade Owls' self-proclaimed troublemaker, a position he takes very seriously! He enjoys playing jokes and pranks on his teammates, though he can get out of hand sometimes. He also has a penchant for corny jokes. He’s one of those people who enjoys seeing others smile.
He can get very excitable, frequently expressing his excitement by screaming, dancing, twirling and flailing his arms.
He is an absolute maniac when it comes to explosives as well as guns and cannons, he really enjoys working with them to the point he is obsessed with them.
Lellain has a rather poor impulse control and can get very hyperactive.
Despite the fact that he is in a relationship with Suri, he is a sucker for beautiful ladies, he is a flirtatious player through and through.
If there is one thing Lellain loves more than anything else in the world, its sugar in all forms. Candies, pastries, honey. He has an immense sweet tooth and when he smells something sweet he wants to try it at all cost.
His absolute favorite dish is Root Stew, the signature dish of the Golars. He will guzzle it down no matter what’s in it, and if it’s in a bread bowl, he will munch it down. Traditional Golar Root Stew is made mainly of Vegetable Broth with light spices, root vegetables with greens and a little bit of meat. He likes to challenge Chaat to make different varieties of Root Stew, but he really dislikes it spicy.
Like almost all Golars, Lellain absolutely hates the sight of bare feet, that is a very dirty part of the body for him and the most unattractive part of a person’s body to him is feet.
At 4’5 or 134 Centimeters, Lellain is the second shortest member of the Jade Owls behind Suri. His short size and portly body frame can sometimes make him slow when running.
Owing to his past in the Golar Sodality, Lellain has a deep disrespect for authority figures, knights, police, etc. and he is particularly distrustful and disrespectful to elderly males in positions of authority, because he equates them to his grandfather.
Unlike most Golars, Lellain has a very low alcohol tolerance and can get drunk pretty quickly and when he does he can get pretty silly and stoned.
Russell gave Lellain the nickname Láthyros (Λάθυρος) which translates to Chickpea or Sweetpea in Greek. Russell chose this nickname for Lellain because Lellain can be mischievous, impish, and impulsive and also because his skin is a light periwinkle color like dark sweet peas.

Hiberno norse glass beads
Tumblr media
I want to show-off those beautiful glass beads crafted by hand by Perlenheim (@perlenheim on insta), that are a recreation of the historical hiberno glass beads. I'm in love. The middle bead is an aroma diffuser, a modern approach that still is true to the aesthetic.

Claymore from Scotland dated to the early 16th Century on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh
The sword is in the traditional Gaelic style used in the Hiberno-Norse peoples in the Western Isles of Scotland and Northern Ireland and bears the letters IHS on both sides of the blade. IHS is a common Christogram which often means either  Iesus Humilis Societas (Humble Society of Jesus) or Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, Savior of men). However it could also mean In Hoc Signo (Vinces) which translates to “In this sign (you will win)”
