Hidden Chapter of Tryst - the morning after the tryst

That morning Edwina and Kate had sat with Lady Danbury and their mother at breakfast.

"Edwina, are you not excited? Today you will become Viscountess Bridgerton!" Mary said, daintily spearing a wedge of potato with her fork.

Edwina shook her head, looking over at Kate, who encouraged her with a nod. "Mother, I must tell you, last night I realized that Lord Bridgerton and I do not have a true love match."

Mary set down her fork with controlled gentility. "What do you --"

"And... and I do not intend to go through with the wedding," Edwina added hurriedly, her tears resurfacing.

Mary smiled falteringly. "Oh, my dear, it is not unusual to have cold feet..."

"It is not cold feet, Mother," Edwina insisted. "He does not love me, and I cannot imagine myself living under --"

"How can you be so sure?" Lady Danbury's eyes were mere slits.

"I... I snuck to Bridgerton House and overheard the brothers talking in the billiard room."

Mary and Lady Danbury shared shocked expressions. "Overheard? You mean spied upon!" Lady Danbury exclaimed. "Tell us what happened."

"From their banter it was clear that Lord Bridgerton was not enthused about our marriage bed."

Lady Danbury tutted. "Gentlemen's talk, Edwina, that is all that --"

"And I tried to kiss him!" Edwina said, her eyes large at the confession.

"What?!" Lady Danbury said, her cutlery clattering to her dish. "What the devil were you thinking? That is not behavior becoming of a future Viscountess! I would not be surprised if he called off the wedding!"

Edwina and Kate shared a look. "I told him I did not want to proceed with it," Edwina confessed, her voice small.

Lady Danbury's eyes burned, her mouth pursed into a tight ball. "It is rare to find a match as desirable as this, and to also expect it to fulfill all your fantasies for romance? It is simply not reasonable. I can only hope he made excuse for you based on your immaturity."

Edwina stayed still, her hand at her mouth.

"Well? Did he?" Lady Danbury insisted.

"He said he would request the Queen cancel the wedding this morning," Edwina blurted out.

"Pardon?!" Lady Danbury said, her eyebrows rising impossibly. "He agreed to calling off the wedding?"

"He respected my choice," Edwina said.

Then we must try to intercept him," Lady Danbury said, her mind running swiftly through the consequences to determine the best route. "Heaven knows what damage he might incur." Her gaze landed on her footman who had just appeared at the doorway.

"My Lady, a carriage from the palace has arrived. The Queen requires Edwina's presence."

Lady Danbury got up and headed to the door in a blur. "Gather yourselves. We must go post-haste," she said behind her shoulder.

It was not quick enough. Lord Bridgerton had already made his attempt, and the Queen had already taken full control of the careening situation. Lady Danbury's attempts to mitigate the damage were quickly dispatched, leaving her to merely observe broodingly as the Queen made her calculated moves. After she dismissed them, keeping Anthony in her clutches, the four of them stood silently in the waiting room. Lady Danbury's brow was lined with dark foreboding.

"What do you think she means to do?" Edwina asked nervously.

Lady Danbury's mouth bent downward in an unoptimistic frown. "She will try to keep her reputation unscathed. Her solution may not be as favorable to ours."

Edwina paced nervously.

"Let us sit down," Mary encouraged. "We do not know for sure what she intends to do until she tells us, so we should try to keep a hopeful outlook."

Edwina and Lady Danbury begrudgingly agreed.

Kate remained standing, as if she did not feel she could remain still for long.

Brimsley reentered the waiting room and headed towards the door.

"Mr. Brimsley, I should like to get some fresh air, if it is not too much trouble," Kate said.

"Of course, my Lady, I will show you to the gardens." They left together then, the door clicking closed quietly.

"What if... what if she forces me to proceed with it?" Edwina asked.

"Then you shall," Lady Danbury intoned, brooking no argument.

Edwina buried her face in her hands. The minutes passed as they waited.

They turned as they heard the waiting room door open and stood up in shock as a peacock strutted in.

"What the devil," Lady Danbury whispered under her breath.

They watched in disbelief as Brimsley scattered grain on the rug and clucked his tongue for the peacock to follow him.

When the door to the Queen's audience room clicked shut, Edwina and Mary both looked to Lady Danbury for an explanation.

"I have no idea," Lady Danbury supplied.

It is time to see if the heroes really would attack a friendly Dark.

Behold: my artwork for chapter 9 of LuckyLectio's fic A Dark Among the Lights on AO3. I know I say this every time, but I wholeheartedly recommend reading it.

This chapter grabbed me by the heart between the symbolism and execution, and I'm really really looking forward to where it goes from here ^-^

I do think its really important to remember that SY was suppose to be the villain character but its only because of his kindness and newly gained life that he didn’t end as one. In the very beginning of the story we learn that Peerless Cucumber Bro often left comments on how SJ didn’t get his dues and needed to be punished more, and only after he transmigrated did he acknowledge how awful of a death SJ had. He also made point to explain that he only read the book for LBH, which he noted to enjoy his decisive actions and deft ability to kill. Markedly, he liked his brutality and personality over the erotica that the majority of PIDW fans enjoyed. Peerless Cucumber Bro is someone who loves action and the ability to cut right to the chase, something that he does not do and most likely has difficulty with in his world.

Speaking of, it is something to note that Peerless Cucumber bro is rich. He had head chefs, he could pay for a 6k+ chapter book of erotica in 20 days, he noted that he could not understand SJs envy and ambition for power since he lives well, and he even noted to himself that his family was well off. He is incredibly wealthy, and it shows. Which is important to note because he, not once, showed any guilt or remorse on dying and leaving his family behind. Yes, he sometimes refers to people as being similar to his family but he never showed any pain for losing that life like he did when he lost LBH. This is important because I genuinely think SY was depressed and self destructive to himself, which goes against popular HC that he was chronically/terminally ill (I do like this HC and like how its portrayed in fanfiction). It would explain how he ended up dying all alone by himself, and how blase he was to his own life and death.

SQQ is a self destructive force who ended up dying three times, and didn’t feel anything about death itself. He was worried about others and the effect it had on them, but for himself it was up and on again like it never happened. He does not care for his health, had self isolated as SY to the point he died alone, and has a horrible self esteem to the point that he continuously agrees when other people put him down and often calls himself the villain. Even though we have seen the evidence of someone who is always being thrust into new situations and awful plots, he calls himself lazy and easy going. He hides his thoughts and feelings behind his fan and has a remarkably thin face. At the very base of his actions and his thoughts, he is self destructive, powerful, and smart. This is the set up for a villain.

However, when shown the actual people in front of him and forced to act as SJ did towards LBH and his disciples, he flinches from it. He notes that it happening in front of him was different. His entire self soothing comedy monologue went quiet when he had to enforce the Endless Abyss scene, and grieved for the childish innocence he killed from one of his favourite people. SY was set up to be the villain and obviously thinks of himself as one, but can not act as one. If he had the choice LBH would have been his sticky sweet white lotus disciple for as long as LBH wished to be.

His kindness, as seen in the book, is what turned him from being “the scumbag villain” to the protagonist we see in the novels. Which, yes, he is a protagonist! He even has the protag halo that LBH has and its very funny in the meta way for SQQ not to realize this, but thats for another post. But he loves his disciples, he loves his peak lord siblings, he loves his Binghe, he loves his new life, and he is kind. That is what kept him from being the villain he sees himself as, his kindness and love for others. Whether that be romantic, platonic, or familial, he loves the people he has met and he treats them kindly. That is why it is important to remember that he was set up as the villain by everything in the story we do not see, but what we do see is him continuously changing the story to fit a new genre that lets as many people as he can save live. Sorry sorry, I just think about SY being set up as a villain so much. It changes a lot of views I have on the series when I remember the duality of SYs story and character development.

Okay, I'll continue talking! So as we all know, RC9GN frequently involves characters being turned into rampaging monsters through no real fault of their own. And then there's Evil Julian, who was a whole thing. What I'm saying is, the Ninja cast are not strangers to the idea of people being forced into evil the way Chase was... but I don't think Chase goes around telling people about his tragic backstory unless he's trying to make a point. So, like, do any of them know Chase is technically under the influence of a mind-altering substance? That he didn't want to be like this, he just didn't want his best friend to leave him behind? Under what circumstances might the First Ninja find out? Under what circumstances might Randy find out?

Of course, what happened to Chase is definitely not the same thing as what happens to people under the Sorcerer's influence. For one, it's a lot more permanent. It's pretty clear in Xiaolin Showdown that Chase is too far gone and can't be cured at this point, if he ever could have been. The only way to stop him from ending a haughty, self-centered dragon would be to stop him from drinking the soup to begin with. And he's still himself on some level. As you said, he still has honor, he can still care, he's still capable of independent rational thought. It seems less like possession and more like very targeted (evil) brain damage. At the same time, this does mean it's technically possible for Chase to turn his back on what he's become. He may never be who he was again, but he can still change, as Omi believes he can. Though jury's out if he believes he can change. Anyway, there's a lot of drama to be wrung out of this, especially if the First Ninja realizes he probably would have liked the man Chase used to be.

Also, I'm just saying, the First Ninja denying that he chained up his evil husband to stop Chase from hurting people while he searches for a cure to the curse that makes Chase evil would be very funny.

OKAY OW HANG ON LISTEN The idea of First deciding to chain up Chase not just because he is an evil menace, but also in order to find a cure for his transformation, hit me so unexpectedly hard in the feels, like FR DUDE???? OW???

(Even if it is a bit of funny mental image AND the wording 'targeted evil brain damage' made me snort so hard, oh my god im so sorry.)

There is an argument/theory about how technically Chase doesn't need to constantly drink the Soup (based on how in alternative future, captured by Jack, Chase didn't drink it in captivity, and as soon as he was released he was kinda bordering on 'feral' lizard mode - Soup helps him keep in control AND keep ahold of his human form, rather that he is absolutely dependant on it), but he does it because he is, well, basically addicted to it.

SO it would be more of First chaining his Evil Brain Damaged Addict of (totally not a) Husband in order for to find a most likely nonexisting cure to his cursed (????) transformation. The ANGST POTENTIAL of it.

And your first points are so interesting and absolutely valid! Chase's situation can be compared to Stank-ification, but you know what would make an even more interesting comparison? The Sorcerer himself.

I think we often forget that technically, Sorcerer situation is him being separated from his humanity and twisted into an immortal monster by Chaos Pearls, because he - as the Peddler - made one decision, one mistake, after being seduced by power greater than him. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

Of course there are a few key differences here:

Sorcerer is literally separated with his human self (soul perhaps??) that is trapped in Land of Shadows, while Chase's humanity seems to have been surpressed and/or muted by his Draconic Self. (or perhaps stolen with his soul by Hannibal, which is a popular theory about how exactly Roy Bean/Soup turned Chase.)

Chase's change is permanent. While Sorcerer situation is possible to fix - it literally happens in the finale.

BUT!!! no one actually knew it was possible to fix before. At least no one gave any indication that it was a known fact about Sorcerer's humanity still existing somewhere in Chaos Realm/Land of Shadows.

I'm pretty sure First/Norisu Clan believed that the Sorcerer was a human changed and twisted into an immortal by chaos. Impossible to kill and impossible to return to normal - that's why he was imprisoned. To keep him contained.

I mean, couldn't First Ninja, after capturing The Sorcerer, try to get his human self from the Land of Shadows himself, if he knew? After all he had access to a Chaos Ball! But he didn't know there was anything to be recovered, that the Sorcerer could be actually unmade just by reuniting him with his human half.

(At least thats my personal HC, but im pretty sure the canon show just retconned/fumbled a bit the whole Sorcerer resolution lol.)

SO just imagine. First learns about Chase's past. And he is freaking aghast. Here is another twisted by evil, but while he and his brothers failed to save those changed that they first encountered (the 'killed first stanked monsters' theory tie in!), they managed to save those that came after. And if First could, he would have tried to save The Sorcerer, no matter how much he hates him. But... Chase is different. There is still something of humanity left in him. Perhaps he can save Chase.

And from Chase's pov? He sees how Ninja saved Stanked people, and he doesn't even consider those situations as similar to his. Sure, people are turned into monsters, but he was turned into a monster by his own choice, there is nothing to save him from. (Isn't there?)

But he watches as First releases those people from the clutches of chaos, watches as he tries so hard to save them... And maybe it makes him yearn, that someone tried just a little bit harder to save the 'him' before he made that choice.

And if First cages Chase and says: "I want to help you. To Cure you." It will certainly enrage Chase - because who does this man think he is, tryin to contain and cure THE Heylin Prince of Darkness, like he is some halpless trapped commoner??? He came to be long before this man's Clan existed and he will be there long after this man will become dust.

But also... maybe deep deep deep inside, Chase is... confused? and pleased? - that someone like Fist Ninja grew to care enough for him to try and save him, even if there is nothing to be saved.

So they would be at this standstill, where First is trying to help a cause that isnt quite possible to fix, and Chase is... well, being Chase.

But, yeah, certainly another amazing thought process from you Anon <3, I've been trying to answer this ask for so long, because every time i start to write i get overcome with emotions about those scenarios like...damn. It's funny, but also the possible drama of all of this... hnnnfgggg
