Hi!!!! Welcome. I finally decided to write a story after being on Tumblr for over a decade now. I am so excited to bring this to everyone who loves Formula 1 and Toto Wolff. This is an introduction to the reader and the reader is you!! so imagine them as anyone or even yourself!! However the reader is Christian Horners Daughter so there will be an age gap. What to expect in this chapter is going to introduce the reader, their first initial chemistry, and first conversation. Please enjoy and leave comments and suggestions!!!

The roar of engines filled the air, mingling with the scent of burning rubber and high-octane fuel. The paddock was a buzz with activity, engineers, mechanics, and team principals darting about, each focused on the upcoming race weekend. You had grown up in this world, as the daughter of Christian Horner, Red Bull's Racing Team's principal it was always a world of fierce competition, relentless pressure, and unmatched exhilaration.

As the daughter of a team principal, you were no stranger to the paddock. You had spent countless hours here, always observing, learning, and eventually earning your place in your father's company as a young and talented engineer for Red Bull. However, no matter how familiar you were with the sights and sounds, the thrill of race weekends never dulled.

Tonight, the atmosphere was different. There was a mix of tension and anticipation in the air. The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden hue over the circuit. Most of the team had already wrapped up their duties for the day, but you remained, engrossed on the data on your screen. The numbers and graphs were your world, and you were determined to ensure everything was perfect for tomorrow's qualifying session.

"Burning the midnight oil, are we?" A deep, familiar voice broke your concentration.

You looked up, startled, to see Toto Wolff, the imposing and charismatic team principal of Mercedes AMG Petronas, standing only a few feet away. He was in his early fifties, definitely more than twenty years your senior, but his presence was commanding, and his smile was warm.

"Mr, Wolff", you greeted, trying to hide your surprise. "Just going over some last-minitue data. What brings you here?" "Please call me Toto", he said with a charming smile . "I couldn't help but notice you've been working hard. It's not often I see someone from the Red Bull Team working so late in our part of the paddock". You couldn't help but smile back. "Well, I like to make sure everything's perfect. Besides, I enjoy the quiet".

Toto nodded, his eyes studying you with a mixture of curiosity and respect. "It's admirable. I've heard a lot about you, you know Christan speaks very highly of you." "Does he?" you asked, raising an eyebrow. "id imagine he docent have many kind words for anyone associated with Mercedes." He chuckled, a warm, rich sound that somehow put you at ease. "True, but family is different. And talent is talent, regardless of which team it's for."

You felt a blush creeping up your cheeks. "Thank you. That means a lot coming from you." There was a brief silence, filled with unspoken words and mutual understanding. It was then you realized that Toto Wolff, despite being your father's rival, was someone you deeply respected. And perhaps, there was more to him than just the fierce competitor you had always seen.

"Would you like to join me for a coffee?" he asked suddenly, breaking the science. "It's rare to find someone so dedicated, and I'd love to hear more about your work." You hesitated for a moment, aware of the implications. But then you'd thought, why not? This was an opportunity to learn from one of the best other than your father who's in the business. "Id like that," you replied, packing up your things.

As you waled towards the hospitality area, Toto shared stories about his early days in racing, making you laugh and think. You found yourself opening up about your own apparitions and challenges, and he listened intently, offering advice and encouragement. The more you talked, the more you realized just how much you had in common. You both shared a deep passion for racing, a relentless drive for perfection, and a desire to prove yourselves. There was an undeniable connection between you, one that went beyond the usual boundaries of team rivalry.

As the evening wore on, the conversation turned more personal. You found yourself sharing stories about your childhood, your relationship with your father, and your dreams for the future. Toto, in turn, spoke about his own journey, his struggles, and his triumphs. There was a vulnerability in his words that touched you deeply. The hours flew by, and before you knew it, it was late. There was a moment of hesitation, and then, almost on impulse, making sure nobody left that was in the paddock was looking or was able to see, you leaned in and kissed him. It was a brief, tentative kiss, but it held all the emotions you had been hiding. When you pulled away, Toto looked at you with a mix of surprise and affection. "I wasn't expecting that," he said softly, "but I'm glad it happened." You smiled, feeling a sense of peace, "me too."

From that moment on, your relationship with Toto blossomed. It wasn't always easy, balancing the rivalry between your teams with your growing feelings for each other, but you had made it work. You had found strength in each other, and together, you faced every challenge that came your way. In a world where competition was fierce and alliances were rare, you had found love and partnership in the most unexpected person and place. And as the engines roared and the races continued, you knew that no matter what, you and toto would always have each other .

CHAPTER 1: The First Test - TBA

Okay, so, yes and no. Yes, low quality gas can cause issues (most notably and immediate is lower MPG). But, there’s really no reason to go to specific brands of gas station. My guess is your mechanic is telling you to go out of your way to get Top Tier graded gas, which will actually improve the longevity of your car, but it’s definitely an “in the long run” thing, not an immediate. I know Shell does Top Tier because my father being the car geek he is will ONLY put Top Tier in his car (which to be fair is a Porsche Cayenne (but it’s an ‘08 he got with 150k miles on it so y’know. It’s really not that fancy)) & he only goes to this one specific Shell station in town. Other stations do Top Tier—I know if you’re in the Midwest most Meijer gas stations & Get Go stations have Top Tier. The symbol you’re looking for is like this one:

It’s likely on their pumps somewhere, but you can actually Google Top Tier gas and go to their website and it’ll give you a list of stations that have this certification.

The certification basically means that the gas station in question subjected the gas it sells to a bunch of testing and this company is like yup, that gas is good gas. It usually means it has certain additives like detergents in it, which can help with the longevity of your engine by breaking up engine deposits & preventing future ones, and protect your valves n shit. If you want to get into the nitty gritty of it I’d recommend going to their website and looking into it, but it’s not that important. The point is that like, yeah, if you can go out of your way to put top tier gas in your car you probably should, but I know I don’t and like. It’s fine. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

THAT SAID, you know how the gas pumps have the three buttons, usually something along the lines of unleaded, plus/mid-grade, and premium? Unless your car specifically calls for premium fuel, which it will probably say so on your gas cap or inside of the little door that covers it (and unless you’re driving a luxury vehicle or a higher-end model, it probably doesn’t), you don’t need mid-grade or premium fuel.

The rest of this post is an explanation on why and it isn’t vital information, it’s just interesting to me, and I also let it get away from me so it’s kinda long & also you get a lesson on how engines work. Sorry not sorry.

The only thing that sets apart regular unleaded from mid-grade and premium is its octane level—the number you see on the little buttons you press to choose the grade. Usually the numbers are 87, 89-90, and 91-94 (though generally it’s 93.) (Sometimes you’ll see other wack numbers for specialty fuels, like 88, or higher octane levels ranging from 96-120. The 88 is usually ethanol-free which as far as I’m aware is only a necessity if your car was manufactured before a certain year or, again, if your manufacturer specifically calls for it. The high octane fuels in the 96-120 range are racing fuels, and if you need that fuel you know more about cars than I do, so… yeah. All that’s to say you can pretty safely ignore those.)

Here’s an explanation on what those numbers mean: basically, it’s a measurement of how much pressure the gas needs to be under before it will spontaneously combust. The lower the octane rating, the lower the pressure necessary. Because cars run on combustion engines (unless you drive an EV of course), you do want it to combust, but you run into trouble if the gas starts to ignite before it should.

You know how you have spark plugs in your engine? Those, indeed, spark, and the spark ignites the gas in the cylinder, which sends the piston back up the cylinder, turning the crankshaft, which ultimately turns a bunch of shit and makes your car go. Here’s a gif!

Since they’ve so kindly numbered each step, let’s go through it:

The piston slurps some gas (the blue fluid in the gif) into the cylinder through the valve.

The piston compresses the gas. At the piston’s highest position, the spark plug sparks, igniting the gas.

The ignition is basically a small explosion, and that pushes the piston back down, leaving burnt fuel (ultimately, exhaust; the brown stuff in the gif) in the cylinder.

The piston comes back up, pushing the exhaust out of the cylinder, before starting all over again.

Now, what does that have to do with octane rating? Remember, octane rating is a measurement of how much pressure it takes to SPONTANEOUSLY combust the gas. You don’t want it to spontaneously combust; you want the spark plug to do that. What ends up happening is the cylinder pushes the gas enough that it spontaneously combusts before the piston hits its highest point & the spark plug sparks, which ultimately causes what’s called “engine knock.” It’s a very recognizable pinging sound caused by unnecessary stress being put on the piston; it’s being pushed down while it’s still on the upstroke. As you can imagine, this is bad for your engine, and terrible for your fuel economy. This is why if your vehicle does recommend you use premium fuel, you should. If your manufacturer is calling for it, your engine can generate enough pressure to spontaneously combust regular unleaded gas.

That said, most standard engines don’t generate enough pressure for it to cause regular unleaded gas to spontaneously combust, which is why you don’t need to spend the extra money if your car doesn’t explicitly call for it.

I swear these two were specifically written to hit everything that appeals to my id, and I love every phase of their relationship. I love how horribly their relationship starts off (hello consent issues and power imbalances and unresolved trauma), and how somehow they're able to overcome that and fall in love despite everything. I love the political pseudo-marriage dynamic they have going on after the first mating flight. I love how they start off so guarded and stubbornly independent and the slow journey to letting each other in. I love the period of time where F'lar is so obviously pining and in denial and keeps doing all the wrong things because he refuses to acknowledge or demonstrate that he has emotions (and Mnementh continual laughing his ass off in the background). I love the way their plots collide with each other early on, and how they become such an unstoppable team once they learn to work together. I love the way they're so good at getting under each other's skin and the "I hate you" *snog* dynamic they have going on by the end of Dragonflight, and how a little bit of continually testing each other and not letting the other have the upper hand easily always remains in their relationship dynamic. I love that F'lar is forever a lovesick fool and Lessa doesn't have a romantic bone in her body. I love how they're not overly demonstrative but little gestures say so much. I love their tenderness and devotion and obvious mutual admiration for each other's competence. I would love to see more of them at literally any point in canon, or a canon divergence AU explorating other ways they could have met and gotten together. I also fully believe that once they're comfortable in their relationship, these two would be super kinky, and would be very into D/s smut. Like so many fans, I think this movie had far more sexual tension than is fair for a movie where the female lead is 16. I am very interested in fic where the Labyrinth and its king retain a hold on Sarah's life after her adventure, and she returns on her own terms when she's older. Bonus points for masked balls, dark fairytale elements, and all manner of fae stuff.

Maybe before cats and dogs started their bitter rivalry, there was Snake vs Mongoose. I’m not talking about Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, I mean two of the best known drag racers ever to lay it all on the starting line: Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwen. Back before corporate sponsorship made some racers professionals, drag racers were innovators and possibly daredevils who no doubt, did it for love and a heaping dose of quarter mile glory. Why else would Snake and Mongoose travel the country for “grudge matches” that paid not much more than gas and beer money? It wasn’t until McEwen convinced Mattel (the first non-automotive drag racing sponsor) that “Wildlife Racing” and this “bitter” rivalry (actually between friends) would sell scores of Hot Wheels that drag racing became both lucrative and a common household discussion.

But that’s just part of the story!  Head down to the Peterson Automotive Museum for their NHRA: Sixty Years of Thunder where Don “The Snake” Prudhomme will be joined by Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, Roland Leong (Hawaiian funny car fame), “TV” Tommy Ivo (Actor and racer of some nasty multi-engined hot rods), Carroll Shelby (needs no intro!) and Ed Pink (engine builder for Snake and just about every winning racer back then). Match Race Madness Panel Discussion

The day will begin with the 2 p.m. panel discussion, Match Race Madness, featuring drag racing’s greatest rivalry: Snake vs. Mongoose. Prudhomme will be joined by arch-rival Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen to tell the tales of their days of traveling the United States from race track to race track, their much-publicized grudge matches, the business partnership they formed called, “Wildlife Racing,” and their pioneering work in non-automotive sponsorship with Mattel’s Hot Wheels.

An Evening with Don “The Snake” Prudhomme

At 5:30 p.m., An Evening with Don “The Snake” Prudhomme will begin. A cocktail hour with Prudhomme, McEwen, and honored guests Roland Leong, Tommy Ivo, Carroll Shelby, Ed Pink and many others will be followed by a fabulous dinner buffet. Special guest Dave McClelland, the Voice of the NHRA and longtime friend of Don Prudhomme, will be the Master of Ceremonies. The evening will continue with a short film featuring The Snake’s history and several other drag racing icons will share their stories of the legend. A live auction of amazing racing memorabilia will follow with proceeds going to the Petersen’s educational programs. Guests will also be able to preview the items that will be in the Bonham’s and Butterfield’s Motorcycles and Memorabilia auction on Saturday, Nov. 13.

NHRA: Sixty Years of Thunder

If that’s not enough, guests will also be the first to see Petersen Automotive Museum’s newest exhibit, NHRA: Sixty Years of Thunder. This exciting new exhibit will cover the history of the National Hot Rod Association, from its early creation as a way to get street racing off of the public highways and on to sanctioned drag strips, through six decades of nitro, tire smoke and thunder. Guests will have an experience rich with historic photography, exciting videos, interactive displays and of course, race cars with the combined power output of 50,000 horses! This exhibit opens at the gala and runs through May 29, 2011.

Honoree: Don “The Snake” Prudhomme

In the early days of his drag racing career, Don Prudhomme worked as a crew member for drag racing icon “T.V.” Tommy Ivo. In 1962, Prudhomme achieved his first Top Fuel win at the Smoker’s March Meet in Bakersfield, California. From 1962 through 1964, Don teamed up with Tom Greer and legendary engine builder Keith Black, and built the famous Greer, Black & Prudhomme Top Fueler (on display in NHRA: 60 Years of Thunder) which won nearly every west coast event. Prudhomme went on to drive Roland Leong’s “Hawaiian” Top Fuel dragster, and won his first NHRA race, the 1965 Winternationals in Pomona, California. He then switched to Funny Cars in the 1970s and won four straight NHRA Funny Car World Championships between 1975 and 1978 and had seven NHRA U.S. Nationals wins. He was the first Funny Car driver to go 5 seconds in the quarter mile and the first to top 250 mph.

Don Prudhomme’s quick reaction times earned him the nickname, “The Snake.” He teamed up with his friend and rival, Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen to form the team “Wildlife Racing,” and they were hired by track owners to race each other in grudge matches around the country. But the real money came when they were sponsored by Mattel’s “Hot Wheels,” the first non-automotive sponsor in NHRA history.

The Snake last raced on his “Final Strike Tour” in 1994, but stayed active in other areas of the sport. Until his retirement earlier this year, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme was a car owner running a Top Fuel Dragster Team and two Funny Car teams. Prudhomme has 49 career wins as a driver, and 59 career wins as an owner.

National Hot Rod Association

Nestled in the quiet community of Glendora, Calif., just minutes east of downtown Los Angeles, is the world’s largest and loudest auto racing organization, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). Since it was founded by Wally Parks in 1951, NHRA has been dedicated to safety while providing millions of racing fans with The Extreme Motorsport: the fastest and most spectacular form of entertainment on wheels. With 80,000 members and more than 35,000 licensed competitors, NHRA is a thriving leader in the world of motorsports. Parks initially started NHRA as a means of getting hot rodders off the streets and on to legal drag strips. The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity. The Museum is located at 6060 Wilshire Boulevard (at Fairfax) in Los Angeles. Nesta Archeron discovered Formula 1 when she was 9 years old. She woke before the sun one Sunday morning, quietly excited to have the television all to herself and watch whatever cartoons she wanted. But she couldn’t remember what channel they were on, instead flipping through the programs. She had almost given up when she stumbled across a race.

The moment she had seen the brightly colored open-wheeled cars flash across the screen, she paused. For whatever reason, the high pitched wasp-like scream of the twelve cylinder engines and the astonishing speed that the drivers were travelling enthralled young Nesta. She didn’t look away once for the rest of the race, or even for the post-race interviews and wrap up that most adults skipped. Something about it had her adrenaline pumping.

Nesta traded her dolls for matchbox cars, and when she grew older, picked up racing magazines instead of teen ones. Ever since that day, Formula 1 consumed her. No matter how the other kids or her two younger sisters teased her for it, her love for the sport never tarnished. 

She spent years getting up at 2 am to watch live races that were being held halfway around the world. Instead of going to her senior prom, Nesta stayed home and layed out her predictions for the season’s drivers and constructors championships. She didn’t know how to do anything half-ass. She poured her whole heart into the sport and devoted her life to it.

Nesta spent her 24th birthday working. It wasn’t like she could request the day off, not that it mattered. The racetrack at Monaco was exactly where she would have been anyway, working or not.

A press pass got her through the first security checkpoint. The team tents loomed ahead as she waited for personnel to cross the unstriped asphalt, inching her car carefully through the throngs of people. She rolled her window down, soaking in the sound of air tools and snippets of conversations. 

Street tracks like Monaco were her favorite. They required drivers to push themselves with plenty of technical corners and dramatic incidents. There was less room for error, as the tracks themselves were not as wide. Drivers had to know their limits and follow the racing line closely.

Race tracks were Nesta’s comfort zone. She knew each track on the calendar like the back of her hand. Every turn was permanently etched in her mind like words on a tombstone. Race weekends followed a set schedule, something that she could appreciate. Friday: practice laps. Saturday: more practice, followed by qualifying, where each driver got the chance to set the fastest lap and secure a spot in the starting line up for the main event on Sunday.

Before she had graduated college, Nesta had managed to fully entrench herself in the world of Formula 1. Securing an internship at ESPN her sophomore year, she had made herself indispensable to the crusty old man that had been the senior track side reporter for decades. She studied everything he did and the questions he asked each driver, noting what changes she would have made. Somehow, he came to admire her spirit and taught her the tricks of the trade.

When he retired the year after Nesta graduated, he went to the board of directors and personally recommended her to fill his spot. She waited two agonizing days for their decision. 

Using whatever means necessary, Nesta had clawed her way to the top and cemented her reputation as the most cutthroat reporter in the industry. Her goal had been for everyone in motorsport to know her name, and in only two years, she had done so. Better yet, she had caught the eye of one of the fastest drivers on the grid.

Her phone rang just as she pulled into the press parking area. She answered, not bothering to check the caller ID. “Hello?”

Tomas’ velvety voice thundered through the speakers of her Civic. “Hey baby. You here yet?”

“Just pulled in,” She replied, touching up her makeup in the rearview. 

“Right on time for a quickie. Meet me at my trailer in five.”

Tomas had already hung up before she had the chance to protest. Both their reputations hinged on their relationship staying secret. If the press caught wind that she was fucking a driver, her credibility would go out the window, and Tomas would be the laughing stock of the grid. So sneaking into his trailer wasn’t exactly the type of discreet she was aiming for.

Tomas Mandray had been racing for Red Bull for two years when she had scored her first exclusive interview with him. He had just been awarded pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, and Nesta had sweet talked her way into the paddock. It had taken minutes for his charming blue eyes to enchant her. He had won that race, and taken her to bed straight after. 

The sex was great, but that’s all it ever was. Their relationship was purely based on the physical; nothing emotional on either end. They had agreed on that from the start. Just sex.

Unfortunately for Nesta, somewhere along the way it had become something more.

Sighing, she put on her oversized sunglasses and hid her tawny hair under a gauzy scarf. The fashion wouldn’t stand out at all amongst the celebrities that frequented the Monaco Grand Prix. Going over the top here was expected; Monaco was known for its money. Due to the lack of income tax, Monaco was a haven for white collar delinquents and royalty alike. Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s were commonplace, and women wore rings that could set a jewel thief up for life. 

No one bothered her as she strode towards the pit checkpoint, flashing her press badge to get by. She fell into her usual cadence, exuding an air of importance and invincibility. Seemingly without realizing, people moved out of her way when they saw her coming. The navy, red, and yellow of the Redbull tent came into view, and Nesta inserted herself into the crowd of mechanics and VIPs to get past security. Press wasn’t allowed in the area until after the race.

Nesta broke away once inside, heading down a back corridor. She knew the layout by heart, having walked the path many times. The door at the end of the hall led outside to Tomas’ private trailer. She didn’t bother to knock before entering. Tomas would already be waiting for her.

He set down his phone as she entered. “Finally,” He said with a savage grin. “We only have a few minutes.”

Tomas left as soon as he finished, donning his jumpsuit without so much as a kiss goodbye. Utterly used to the behavior, Nesta straightened her clothes and again touched up her makeup before heading back out.

She was scheduled to conduct a pre-race interview with Cassian Valle in the Mercedes tent in twenty minutes. Redbull and Mercedes were at opposite ends of the pit, giving her plenty of time to think.

Truthfully, Nesta was dreading the interaction. Cassian was an arrogant ass. She couldn’t stand interviewing him; all he did was skirt around questions and try to flirt, which made it incredibly difficult to get any headline-worthy tidbits from him.

Azriel Sainz, Cassian’s teammate at Mercedes, was much more amiable. He was mostly forgettable and quiet, but always gave her something to work with and was sometimes downright pleasant to talk to. She could understand why the public loved him, but not why they were so enamored with Cassian. Sure, he was a three time world champion, and that earned him plenty of fans, but he was just so… dreadful.

She made it to the Mercedes pit just minutes before the scheduled time, immediately spotting her tense cameraman, Jacob. Slim built, he was average looking, nothing special. He was sweet though, if not a bit of a pushover.

“Where the hell have you been?” He hissed, chocolate brown eyes wide. “Valle is waiting.”

Nesta rolled her eyes, handing Jacob her sunglasses and the scarf. “I’m here now, aren’t I? Not my fault if he was early.” Nesta accepted her microphone and rolled her shoulders. “Let’s get this over with then.”

“Happy birthday by the way,” Jacob added. Yes, there was the pushover side shining through. 

Nesta threw a grin at him over her shoulder. “Thanks.”

Cassian’s back was to her as she approached, his white Mercedes jumpsuit half on, the arms of it cinched around his waist. The crisp gray shirt he wore left little to the imagination, hugging his sculpted form. Good; at least that would capture the attention of any women that might be watching. As would the deep brown curl that fell in his face when he turned to her.

“If it isn’t my very favorite reporter,” He crooned, a grin plastered on his face. “Took you long enough to get here. I also hear it’s your birthday.” Nesta glared at Jacob. He shrank under her steely look, an apology stumbling from his lips.

“I would give you a birthday kiss, but I think you’d knock me out if I offered.”

Nesta pointedly ignored him, “Let’s just get on with it,” She said, motioning to Jacob to start recording. Once he signaled he was ready, Nesta breathed deep, the sweet scent of high octane fuel assaulting her senses. It steadied her, and she slipped into her professional mask before turning to the camera.

“As we all know, the Monaco Grand Prix offers drivers a unique set of challenges. The two-mile street course has 19 technical corners with little room for error. It is in Monaco that we get to see who has what it takes to be a Formula 1 champion.” She turned to Cassian, gave him a professional smile and continued.

“Last year, you had a puncture at turn seven when you ran over some debris. Coupled with the fumble the pit crew had with not having your tires ready when you came into the pit, you finished a disappointing 12th place, winning you no points in the driver’s championship. Do you expect that this year will be better, or will you stick to your usual aggressive driving style?”

Cassian laughed, running a hand through his unbound curls. “Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be changing anything. You can expect to see me on the podium, sweetheart. Most likely in first.”

Nesta grit her teeth. She couldn’t air that, and he knew it. “How about you answer the question without trying to piss me off?”

“It’s too easy,” Cassian said, that devilish grin returning. Nesta cut him a glare that simmered with violence. “Alright fine,” He relented, putting his hands up. “Go again.”

She repeated her question, and this time he answered, “I don’t really see any need to change my driving style, what happened last year was a fluke. I went wide on the turn and didn’t notice Vanserra's front wing until the last second and wasn’t able to change course.” Nesta nodded, encouraging him to go on. “I don't see myself making any mistakes like that this year. You can expect to see me on the podium, most likely in first.”

“Thank you for that Cassian. Good luck on the track today.”

“Thank you,” He said, waving at the camera. He paused before adding, “Though I won’t need luck.”

Nesta rolled her eyes and signaled for Jacob to cut the recording. At least that last bit could be edited out. “You are absolutely insufferable, you know that?”

Cassian shrugged, undoing the arms of his fire suit and slipping into them. “I do my best.” He winked at her before zipping up his suit, opening his mouth to say something else when the Mercedes team principal, Rhysand, barked at him to get his ass in gear. He gave Nesta a wordless salute before jogging off.

“I don’t know how you do it,” Jacob said, packing up his camera. “That guy has balls.”

“He’s a Formula 1 driver,” Nesta said simply, putting her sunglasses back on. “Of course he does.”

Nesta watched the 78 lap race from the press box, silently cheering Tomas on. Each time the pack of cars passed, the windows rattled, doing little to muffle the engine noise. She chatted with the others as necessary, keeping one eye on the tarmac below. Tomas had started from pole position, and held onto first place until the final 10 laps. He had attempted to lap an AlphaTauri driver when the driver had failed to yield, violating FIA regulations. The two had bumped tires in what was ruled a racing incident, but Nesta knew better. Tomas had lost his cool and nudged the other driver on purpose, nearly sending him into the wall. 

It was a bad call on Tomas’ part, as the comfortable four second lead he had held over second place shattered. Nesta swore under her breath as Cassian overtook Tomas, her heart dropping when the other Mercedes driver, Azriel, did the same. Tomas would not be happy about that. 

When the checkered flag waved, Cassian was first, Azriel second, and Tomas third.  The winners parked before the podium, anger radiating from Tomas as he tore his helmet off. Tamlin, the Redbull team principal, said something to Tomas that had his cheeks burning red. 

Nesta grabbed Jacob and headed for the press room. They had a half hour tops before the post-race interviews started, and Nesta had to make sure she was front row. Though it didn’t matter where she sat; she always made sure her questions were answered.

It was more so for Tomas. She wanted him to see her, to see the understanding on her face and know she supported him even when he didn't win.

They were first to the press room, and Nesta had ample time to prepare questions. She couldn’t question Tomas, or she risked uncapping his rage. Instead, she jotted down a question she knew would shift the focus from Tomas to the Mercedes drivers.

Reporters began filing in, vying for the perfect spot and debating the race results with one another. Nesta remained in her seat, determined to maintain her composure as her stomach churned. Tomas finally entered, jaw set as he took his place on the stage. Nesta tried to subtly catch his eye, but he pointedly avoided looking at her. 

Cassian and Azriel entered, laughing and congratulating each other. Nesta noted the slight change in Tomas’ posture, the only hint of the blood boiling beneath his skin. Cameras flashed, reporters shouted, but still Nesta remained seated. Cassian, at least, sought her out in the crowd, and flashed her an ‘I-told-you-so’ grin when he found her. Once the clamor had died down, Nesta stood. The room quieted further, the others having learned not to talk over her if they valued their jobs. Nesta had a knack for digging up dirt on anyone she pleased.

Her eyes were still locked on Cassian as the moderator indicated she could ask her question. 

“Azriel,” She started, turning to the dark haired man, “You were lucky you were able to take second in this race, after the incident in turn twelve on lap 27 when you sustained heavy damage to your front wing, thanks to the actions of your teammate. Does it ever get under your skin that Valle’s overly-aggressive driving threatens your own position in the championship?”

The room was silent. Tomas hid his grin behind a well-manicured hand. Cassian’s eyes narrowed, a muscle in his jaw fluttering. Good; she had hit a nerve. Azriel shrugged, crossing his arms. 

“It was a racing incident. Could have happened to anyone. I don’t think the blame lays entirely with Cassian; I could have given him more room on the corner.”

And that was that. Nesta didn’t ask any more questions, but she could feel Cassian glaring at her throughout. At the end of the interview, all three drivers thanked everyone before leaving.

As Nesta made her way back to her car, she texted Tomas.

You okay?

Her heart pounded as she waited for the reply. Her phone buzzed minutes later.

I’ll be home late. Party at the Redbull house.

Oh. Okay. See you later then.

“Happy birthday to me,” She muttered, stuffing the phone in her pocket.

Nesta wasn’t sure why his reply stung, but it cut deep. She had hoped that he would want to see her instead of going to another party and spend time with her on her birthday. Instead, he would probably stick his tongue down another woman’s throat like usual. She couldn’t really blame him. Their relationship had to remain secret and to do so, Tomas had to maintain his playboy aura. It wasn’t really cheating if she had agreed to it.

But if that were true, why did it hurt so fucking bad when he did?

Some of her tension eased when she finally spied her car in the lot. The Blue Bullet, she had nicknamed it, due to the strikingly bright paint. It was the first purchase she had made upon being promoted, and it had since become her pride and joy. She had chosen it because it set lap records left and right when it had hit the market a few years back, and she had craved speed her whole life. On city streets, this car was the closest she could get to experiencing Formula 1 without completely breaking the bank.

“How about you don’t ask stupid fucking questions next time your prettyboy loses?”

Nesta’s breath hitched. Your prettyboy. The accusation was clear. Her hand slipped from the door handle, turning towards the voice. If he knew… If he knew about her and Tomas, they were done for. She willed her voice into solid steel.

“Cassian. I would advise you to choose your next words wisely.”

He placed a hand on her Civic, getting in her face. “Racing means you have racing incidents. I don’t expect you to understand, seeing as you’ve never been behind the wheel of a real race car.” He sneered at her car, the insult striking home.

Fear faded, replaced by a rising wave of scarlett rage. Nesta’s gaze stuck to where his hand lay on the bright blue paint, utterly vexed by the infringement. She bared her teeth at him, rising to the challenge in Cassian’s flaming hazel eyes. 

“Get. Off.”

Cassian started at the command in her tone and obeyed. He opened his mouth, but she cut him off. “Understanding the nuances of Formula 1 is my job description. I asked about that incident because I knew it would piss you off. Looks like I was right huh?” Her temper was getting the better of her. “And by the way, would it kill you to give me a decent quote once in a while, instead of always trying to get in my pants?”

“I do not-”

“Oh go fuck yourself,” Nesta scoffed, yanking the door open. 

The corners of his mouth twitched upward as she slammed the car door. “I was already planning on it.”

Those parting words haunted her drive home, even as she took the long way in hopes of blowing off steam. She shifted through the gears, throwing the Civic around corners much faster than was probably safe. Nesta didn’t care; her head was a mess. At least he hadn’t mentioned anything more about Tomas. Maybe Cassian had just thought she had a crush, based on the way she had been looking at him during the conference. Gods, she couldn’t get Cassian out of her head. 

His grin followed her up the stairs to her apartment, where she snapped the curtains shut. She couldn’t bear to look out over the track any longer today. 

Those words echoed in her head as she brushed her teeth and crawled into bed alone. Swam through her thoughts of Tomas, as she struggled to keep her eyes open when the clock showed 1 am. As she finally gave in, they were her last thought.

It was always the same routine, every damn time.

Time once again had become a hallucinatory concept, the bouncer shoving him through the doors to leave the LED-lighted dance floor behind them. Even for him did it become a routine: Suna came in alone, sat down in the second last bar chair to get high on two and a quarter of a blunt, only to be set outside when the club would close. Those fox-like eyes with a small pupil he came in with, turned into droopy eyes wherein the iris almost drowned completely by the large pupil by the time he left.

“It’s always the same thing, buddy,” the bouncer commented for the first time. “Where are you going after these nights?” He had pushed him out of the closing bar, two hands on his back as Suna slumped lazily in front of him.

Walking out of the black doors, the first thing he noticed was the sweet drops of rain falling onto the concrete tiles. He huffed out a breath, rolling his eyes back into their sockets before he finally brushed the hands of the bouncer off of him.

“Does it fucking matter?” His response came out as a mere mumble, voice shaky and tone not even hitting an octane. “Once I’m out of the club, I’m not your concern anymore. Why bother?”

Suna stuffed his hands into his pockets after throwing the hood of his sweater over his head. Finally, the drops came soft and heavy falling from a sky of nothing more than pure darkness. They all came together and yet as lonely pioneers. They soaked into the polyester hoodie that tried its hardest best to keep the human body it was wrapped around, warm. However, the combination of the soaked clothing and the soft breeze that ran through his hair and rushed past his body made the job seem impossible.

He continued his path, feet leading the way as if they memorised the night just as well as his brain.

For a second, he stopped in his tracks. In his head, he was debating whether or not to do as he was used to doing. But you know what they say about people, once they are used to something, they can’t bear to be without it.

His eyes were focused on the smile you had curled into your lips. His heart never let him change your profile picture on his phone. Neither did he get rid of the beating heart behind your name.

You looked so happy without him.

The longing to be by your side brawled in between his ribcage. No matter how much time passed by, Suna would never get over you. Every morning he woke up mumbling, “I love you.” Every morning he found his bed empty and cold. He missed your figure draped all over his, even though he would complain about it every time he got the chance to do so. He missed the smell that he would wake up to.

No woman he had brought home had been the object of his desire. He had tried to get over you, a stranger a night in his bed. And still, he never wanted them to stay, hated it when he would have to wake up and find them still beside him in bed.

His mind was foggy, the smoked-up weed reaching its high. He shuffled over the wet concrete to the location he had been to many times before.

And there he stood, in front of your house, once again.

The house was welcoming from the open door to the wide hallway. He remembered the walls of the hall covered in photographs of your friends, family, cat and him. You had hung up the picture of you two in the middle. He remembered the afternoon of when that photo was taken crystal clear, even when he was high.

You had forced him to get out of bed.

“It’s five in the afternoon, Rin! If we go out now, we might be able to see the sunset.” The smile on your face when you stood in the tall grass, eyes focused on the blood-like sun, made it all worth it.

He fished his phone out of his pocket, dialling your number without a second thought.

The phone rang once, twice, thrice. Every second passing by felt like a step closer to an open cliff. Finally, he heard the sound he had been longing for.

However, the sentence that was spoken did not fuel his desire.

“Why’d you only call me when you’re high, Suna?” Your tone was flat, no spark of life let alone excitement to see his ID-caller on your phone. You sounded tired, whether it was because of him or your life, he couldn’t tell.

“I miss you.” The words were out before he could think about them. He felt pathetic, lifeless. Always had he told himself he wouldn’t need anyone in life, would be independent and never sulk over somebody.

But look at him now: broken, high and fucked up.

“It’s always the same damn thing, Suna.” The way his last name rolled so easily off your tongue reminded him of how you two really aren’t together anymore. What happened to his nicknames? Fuck, what happened to calling him by his first name? “You get high, walk to my house and dial my number. It gets tiring.”

His mouth opened to explain himself, maybe even to beg you to listen to him. He knew it was pathetic, he knew he should just get over you.

Just like you got over him.

Before he could even get a letter out, he heard the familiar sound that plays after someone has hung up. Something finally snapped inside of him and before he knew it, he was storming to your front door, banging abruptly against the wood, scream after scream blared out of his lungs.

“Open the door, Y/n!” He screeched out. “Open the goddamn door!”

It felt like hours when he saw red and blue lights appearing in the right corner of his eyes. Two police cars raced towards his soaked body, the lights blurred out by the falling raindrops.

“Why’d I only call you when I’m high, Y/n? Because it’s the only time I don’t care about wearing my heart on my sleeve.”

Particularly during New York Fashion Week (NYFW), which is an often energy fueled and relentlessly tiring showreel of parties, fashion, liquor and of course, outfits, and where a staycation in the home city is much mandated. Amidst it all, finding a place to let your hair down is essential. Which is why the neon pink sign of the Moxy Times Square was most inviting for a stay in this glittery season. While I would often refrain from the Times Square area, this one provided a neat geography and cozy quiet in the southern part. Perfect.

Designed by Yabu Pushelberg, the minimalist but extremely stylish decor featured comfy beds with quirky decor, a vintage theme with walls, art and even cleverly digitized rotary phones, and walk in showers with mirrors aplenty. The technology element was leveraged from automated elevators to screen casting to really anything across the plethora of amenities for co-working, play and mischievous fun. I obviously matched the retro phone to my Tom Ford pants for parties and beyond.

There were also neat nods to progressive politics like the ‘anybody’ bathroom signage, as well as a play on words throughout the property, like ‘Walk All Over Me’ entry mats!

While I did not have much time to explore amenities, one event at the rooftop was captured by the BFA with yours truly in vintage Paul Smith.

Salmon Bowls with Avocado and Carrot “Rice”

If you’re looking for an easy, paleo, keto meal, give these Salmon Bowls with Avocado, Carrot “Rice” sauteed rainbow chard and wasabi sauce a whirl! Filled with protein, healthy fats, and nutrients, these bowls are so flavorful and easy to make any night of the week.

Clean, nutrient-dense bowls have been my jam for many, many moons. Those of you who are familiar with my cookbook, Paleo Power Bowls, know I’m all about getting as many nutrients in one bowl as possible while keeping a good balance between protein, fat, and carbohydrate.

These days, I tend to keep my meals centered around quality protein and fat. I source my carbohydrate from vegetables (primarily carrots and spaghetti squash!) or sprouted brown rice or white rice. In essence, I first prioritize protein and healthy monounsaturated fat like the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and avocados and backfill with quality carbohydrate.

The body runs on amino acids and requires good fats for healthy hormone and brain function as well as absorption. For this reason, the protein + omega 3 formula is a great focal point for ensuring you’re giving your body what it needs for high octane fuel without added inflammation.

Salmon bowls with California Avocados, carrot rice, and wasabi sauce are a perfect example of how I tailor all of my meals. I always go for California Avocados! I’ve noticed they have such a creamy and almost meatiness to them with that vibrant green color.

The combination of crispy salmon with California Avocado, sautéed greens and carrot rice makes for such a winning meal. While the bowls require multiple components, each component is so easy to assemble and you’re left with a meal that comes together quickly, hits all the macro targets, and goes down real nice!

So let’s jump in!

How to Make Salmon Bowls with Avocado and Carrot “Rice:”

Start by preparing the wasabi sauce. Simply add all ingredients for the sauce to a blender and blend until smooth. Refrigerate the sauce until you’re ready to use it.

Carrot rice. Have you had it? The concept is the same as cauliflower rice. Simply pulse carrots in a food processor until rice-sized pieces form. Transfer to a large sauté pan with some cooking oil (I use avocado oil) and sauté until the carrot rice has softened and begins turning golden-brown.

While the carrot rice is cooking, you can broil the salmon. Place the salmon fillets in a casserole dish and sprinkle with sea salt and any spices your heart desires (my go-to is paprika, but onion powder and garlic powder are lovely as well!). Broil for 10 to 15 minutes (depending on salmon thickness).

Once the carrot rice has finished cooking, you can transfer it to big bowls for serving and use the same skillet to sauté the greens. Add the chopped greens, a small amount of oil, and sea salt to the skillet and cook over medium until the greens have wilted. If you love garlic and onions, feel free to toss some in for flavor!

Once all the bowl components are ready, form your bowls… with a hearty portion of California Avocados, of course!!

Drizzle the wasabi sauce over everything and garnish with sesame seeds and chives.

Peel and chop carrots and transfer to a food processor. pulse carrots until rice-sized pieces form. Transfer to a large saute pan with some cooking oil (I use avocado oil) and saute until the carrot rice has softened and begins turning golden-brown.

While the carrot rice is cooking, you can broil the salmon. Place oven on the high broil setting. Place the salmon fillets in a casserole dish and sprinkle with paprika, ginger, and sea salt. Broil for 10 to 15 minutes (depending on salmon thickness) on the second-from-the-top rack.

Add the chopped greens, a small amount of oil, and sea salt to the skillet and cook over medium until the greens have wilted. If you love garlic and onions, feel free to toss some in for flavor!

Divide the carrot rice, sauteed greens, salmon, and avocado between 2 or 3 bowls. Drizzle with wasabi sauce, sprinkle with chives and sesame seeds, and enjoy!
